How Water Changes The Earth’s Surface Almost 3/4’s of the Earth’s surface is covered by water! Water exists on Earth as ice - a solid, as a liquid and as an invisible gas called water vapor. Water has the ability to change forms over and over again. Every living thing - plants, animals and people depend on water to live. Liquid water evaporates from our oceans, lakes and streams. As the water vapor rises (or evaporates) into the air, it cools. Water vapor then condenses back into liquid water when it falls back to the Earth. We call that precipitation. Some of the precipitation soaks into the soil. It becomes part of the groundwater. It may stay in the ground for hundreds of years. Some precipitation runs off and flows back into rivers, lakes, and oceans. As the water flows across the Earth’s surface, it makes channels or canyons. and the water moves the soil along with it. It deposits soil in new places and wears down the rocks. Water in rivers, lakes and oceans will change into water vapor again, continuing the cycle. The same holds true as the snow melts on mountaintops. Water changes from a solid state of snow and ice becoming a liquid state as it flows down the mountain. Over time, this moving water wears down or weathers the rock. Weathering is the term geologists use to describe the breaking down of rocks into smaller pieces. Rocks weather until they become a small grain of sand. The stream of water carrying the smaller rocks and grains of sand joins with others and form small rivers. As more streams and rivers empty into it, a small river becomes a larger one. The river bed grows deeper and wider. The current slows down and soil and sand are deposited. Rivers keep flowing until they reach the ocean. A large area of soil and rock deposited by a river at the mouth of a river is called a delta. As the water flows over the Earth’s surface, it shapes the land. Over millions of years, canyons are formed. The Grand Canyon is 10 to 15 miles wide and it is almost a mile deep! High up in the mountains where it is very cold, the snow never

melts. Glaciers are formed. Glaciers are large bodies of ice and compacted snow. They are found in high mountains and at the poles. As the glacier grows larger and heavier, the weight of ice pressing down causes the bottom of the glacier to melt a little. This causes the glacier to slide Melting Glaciers in the Swiss Alps downhill and as they slide, they pick up rocks and boulders. Again it works like sandpaper and carves out mountain valleys. At the ocean shore, the pounding of waves breaks down rock. It grinds them into sand. All these kinds of weathering are called mechanical weathering. Mechanical weathering is weathering that breaks rocks apart without changing their chemical makeup. In the winter months, precipitation falls onto rocks. It may be rain or snow. The sun causes it to melt and it seeps into the cracks of the rock. At night when it gets colder, the water freezes. When it freezes, it expands. It forces the rock to crack and break apart. This process of water freezing and thawing to break apart rock is called ice or frost wedging.

GYMNASTICS

“A Great Beginning” What kid doesn’t love to run, jump, bounce, hop, climb, swing or FLIP? Gymnastics is one sport that makes exercising FUN! Whether it is tumbling on mats, balancing on a beam, swinging on a bar, bouncing on a trampoline or climbing high on a rope, gymnastics has something for all kids who love to exercise. Gymnastics as a sport is one of the most popular of all Olympic sports. During the Olympics many people watch gymnastics. Boys gymnastics has 6 different events (High Bar, Vault, Floor Exercise, Pommel Horse, Parallel Bars, and Rings). Girls use 4 different events (Floor, Balance Beam, Vault and Uneven Parallel Bars). Gymnastics is a fun sport to watch BUT it is even more enjoyable to DO! What makes gymnastics even more special is that it can prepare you for whatever sport you may enjoy most. Gymnastics helps develop strength and flexibility which are needed in all sports. It teaches us how to run fast and jump high which are great for baseball, football, soccer and more.

Since 1960

It teaches us how to use our eyes, hands and feet which are great tools in tennis, volleyball, and hockey. Gymnastics is a great beginning for all sports. GYMNASTICS SAFETY It is important to remember that gymnastics should only be done when supervised by a coach or teacher. Proper matting is needed to make sure everyone stays safe. Coaches can help teach the tricks while making sure nobody gets hurt. With a good coach, lots of matting and proper instruction, GYMNASTICS is a blast!

The Violin! One of the best known instruments in the orchestra is the violin. It is played with a bow and is the highest pitched instrument in the violin family. The violin consists of several parts - the front, the ribs, the neck, the fingerboard, the pegbox, the scroll, the bridge, the tailpiece and the f- holes. The violin has four strings which are fastened to the tailpiece, rest over the fingerboard and run to the pegbox. At the pegbox, the strings are attached to tuning pegs and by turning these pegs, the violin can be tuned to the correct pitch. By the musician changing finger positions on the strings, different notes are made. The bow is drawn across the strings with make the tone. The violin can be traced back to Italy in the early 1500’s. Evolving from two other stringed instruments, the fiddle and the lira da braccio which were both stringed instruments. The known developer of the violin was Andres Amati. In the 17th and 18th centuries, the craft of violin making began. Artists such as Antonio Stradivari, Giuseppe Guarneri and Jacob Stainer made them in their workshops. At this time, the violins had a shorter neck, the bridge was fatter, a shorter fingerboard and the strings were made of gut. At first, the violin wasn’t very popular and considered low status socially. But by the 1800’s, well known composers, like Claudio Monteverdi used the violin in operas. The violin began to gain some stature in the Baroque period as more known composers began using the violin in their works. One of these composers was Johann Sebastian Bach. By the mid-18th century, the violin was a vital part in instrumental music. During this time, violins emerged as the leading section in the orchestra. However, it wasn’t until the 19th century that violin virtuosos emerged. People such as Giovanni Viotti, Isaac Stern, Mischa Elman and Nathan Milstein became world famous for their skill.

So You Want to be in the Band? By Dennis Marvin President Holt High School Band Boosters “So You Want to be in the Band?, presented by the Holt High School Band Boosters, features a high school band member each month describing why they became interested in music, when they did, and the impact it’s had on their life. The Band Boosters hopes this article will encourage kids to think about music, learning an instrument, and joining the band in middle school and for the rest of their years in Holt Public Schools. By: Dennis Marvin, President, Holt Band Boosters JAMES DUNCAN James Duncan (JD) is a Sophomore at Holt High School. The following questions were posed by the Holt Band Boosters (HBB): HBB: play?

What instrument do you

JD: I play the trombone in the marching, symphonic, and jazz bands. HBB: Why did you decide to play the trombone and when? JD: My friends and I started looking into the different types of instruments in 5th grade at Washington Woods, but I originally started out playing the Ă€XWH LQ WK JUDGH :KLOH , ZDV about the only one who could “make a sound on it,â€? I decided to switch to playing trombone about a month later. I thought the trombone looked “coolâ€? and I liked how the slide moves. HBB: When did you join the band?

JD: Being a musician and having an ability to play an instrument is an “awesome experience.â€? All the friends I have made and the many memories I have are priceless. Memories like going to Cincinnati on the band trip two years ago was the experience of a lifetime. Playing at King’s Island or going to the zoo and aquarium were experiences I probably would not have done had I not been in the band. I am also on the cross-country team and run track. Like band, that builds character, too, but I have to admit if I had to make a choice, I ZRXOG GHÂżQLWHO\ FKRRVH EDQG over running because playing music is my passion. That is why I not only play in the marching and symphonic bands, but also play in the jazz band, which is really, an extracurricular activity including early morning practices. HBB: Do you plan to stay involved in music or band after High School? JD: Maybe not as a career, but I have a lot of interest in becoming a member of the Spartan Marching Band and Jazz Band. I am also thinking about learning how to play other instruments like the guitar, piano, and maybe even the saxophone.

For my career, I plan to study engineering, but maybe have music as a “fallback.â€? HBB: Why do you think younger kids should think about joining the band? Also, once you start, don’t be afraid to switch to another instrument if you don’t like the one you started with. Being in the band is an experience that may only come around once and one you don’t want to miss. You might hear stories from your parents about being in the band 20 years ago might have been for “nerds,â€? but that’s not the case today. HOLT PUBLIC SCHOOLS Podcast in Dimondale by John Hayhoe It is getting to be a custom that when Dr. Hornak hosts his coffee hour in Dimondale, he has the Dimondale Village President, Ralph Reznick join him for his weekly podcast. Since the community coffee hour was held at MorningLory’s Café in Dimondale, previous Village President Mike Chappell was invited to be on the podcast. Mike had previously owned the restaurant for 49 years under the name, Mike’s Village Restaurant. President Reznick started the podcast by saying MorningLory’s Café came in second, in the Lansing area, as the best diner in the area! Ralph also discussed the annual spaghetti dinner to help the local food pantry, which will be March 9th from 4pm-7pm. This summer the Village hopes to make improvements to the Danford Island Park located on the Grand River. Dr. Hornak urged the Holt/Dimondale communities to get involved in adding input for the new Strategic Plan. Finally, Dr. Hornak will host his next coffee hour March 14th in Holt, but no location has been decided yet since Tim Hortons has closed. Pictured are Dimondale Village President Ralph Reznick, past Village President Mike Chappell, Delhi Township Supervisor John Hayhoe, and Holt Schools Superintendent Dr. David Hornak.

Republic Of Estonia • Estonia is an Eastern European country which borders the Baltic Sea and Gulf of Finland, between Latvia and Russia. It is about the size of New Hampshire and Massachusetts combined. • The capital city is Tallinn. It is one of the best-preserved mediaeval cities. It is also the city of the first Christmas tree in the world. In 1441, the tree was put up in the town square. • The government is a Parliamentary Democracy. Estonia re-gained its independence on August 20, 1991 from the U.S.S.R. • Natural resources: Oil shale, phosphorite, limestone, blue clay. • Estonia enjoys a mild climate because of marine influences. Mainly a lowland, the republic has numerous lakes, frequently of glacial origin. Peipus (Lake Chudskoye), the largest lake, is important for both shipping and fishing. It is also Europe’s fourth largest freshwater lake. Along Estonia's Baltic coast are more than 800 islands, of which Saaremaa is the most notable. • The climate is temperate with warm summers and severe winters. Temperatures range from 70 degrees F in the summer, to a winter average of 18 degrees F. They have four seasons of equal length. Being on the Baltic Sea, Estonia is subjected to sea breezes and humidity. • The highest peak in Estonia is Suur Munamagi. It is the highest point in the entire Baltic region at 1043 feet above sea level. • The Republic's rivers include the Narva, Pärnu, Ema, and Kasari. • Estonia is the world's second largest producer of oil shale. The majority of its workforce is involved in industry, which also includes mining, shipbuilding, information technology, and the manufacture of wood products, electronic and telecommunications equipment, textiles and clothing, and machinery. • Its efficient agricultural sector employs some 11% of the labor force and produces meat (largely pork), dairy products, potatoes, flax, and sugar beets. Fishing is also important.

A scene from Tallinn, the capital.

• Throughout history, many other nations that ruled the region – Danes, Germans, Swedes, Poles and Russians – have influenced Estonian cuisine. Among the traditional dishes are marinated eel, blood sausage and sauerkraut stew with pork. • Famous Estonians include the writer Jaan Kross whose work has been translated into at least 20 languages, the author of the national epic (Kalevipoeg) Friedrich Reinhold Kreutzwald, and the writer, filmmaker, diplomat and politician Lennart Meri. He became the first President of Estonia after the restoration of independence. • In the Bronze Age a meteorite fell in Kaali on the island of Saaremaa. The Kaali catastrophe was the last known case of a large meteorite to fall on a populated area. Estonia has the highest number of meteorite craters per land area in the world.

Baird’s Tapir The Baird's tapir is named for the American naturalist Spencer Fullerton Baird, who traveled to Mexico in 1843 and observed the animals. The Baird’s tapir is native to Central America and northern South America. It’s even the national animal of Belize! Baird's tapirs average up to 6.6 feet in length, not including a little tail that’s 2.8 to 5.1 inches long. They average about 3.9 feet in height. Adults can weigh can range from 330 to 880 pounds. In captivity, adults can live to be approximately 30 years old. Baird’s tapirs are a dark brown color with cream colored markings on its face, with dark

spots on its cheeks, behind and below its eyes. They have four toes on each front foot and three on each back foot. Baird's tapirs may be active at all hours, but they are primarily nocturnal. They search for leaves and fallen fruit to eat. Feeding groups are not uncommon, but they usually are solitary animals. They make their home close to water. On hot days, the Baird’s tapir enjoys swimming or wading! They are very good swimmers and can remain submerged for several minutes to escape their predators. Young Baird’s tapirs learn to swim at just three weeks. They communicate through whistles and shrill squeaks. The Baird’s taper has an extremely well-developed sense of smell and can sample the air in all directions without turning their head. Their vision isn’t very clear, but they have very keen hearing. The Baird’s tapir is an endangered species, due to hunting and deforestation. While the hunting of Baird’s tapirs is illegal in Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, Costa Rica, and Panama, the law is often unenforced. The law also doesn’t account for deforestation, a large problem in Cental and South American countries.
