Plainwell Schools Bigs & Littles Partner in Schools Plainwell Community Schools has a long history with mentoring it’s been partnering with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Kalamazoo since 1999. The Plainwell Bigs in Schools program began with adults mentoring students only in the middle school but has since grown to include high school students mentoring elementary students. There are currently 40 matches between high school Bigs & elementary Littles. During their junior and senior years of high school, Bigs volunteer to spend about an hour each week with their Little. A few students who had mentors when they were middle school students now choose to be a Bigs to elementary boys and girls as a way of paying it forward. I Want To Play The Harmonica! The harmonica (or mouth organ) is a hand-held rectangular musical instrument. As the musician inhales and exhales into evenly spaced air channels, the metal reeds within produce musical notes. The length and thickness of the reed determines the note that is heard. The first patent was issued to Christian Friedrich Buschmann of Germany. Several decades later, a young German clockmaker named Matthias Hohner learned to make a harmonica and consequently changed his profession. Starting his new company in a kitchen in 1857, he turned out 650 in his first year with the help of family and one paid worker. He marketed his harmonica well with his name engraved on everyone and introduced his instrument to North America. The harmonica’s portability and affordability made it a favorite of the Western Cowboy. African-American blue musicians also found the harmonica an affordable alternative. Sonny Terry, James Cotton, Charles Musselwhite and William Clarke are just a few of the blue legends who used the harmonica. The harmonica then entered the mainstream. Numerous rock and roll musicians picked up the harmonica. Folk singer Bob Dylan popularized the placing of the harmonica on a neck frame to free his hands for playing the guitar, etc.
Today, five major types of harmonicas are produced: diatonic, diatonic tremolo-tuned, diatonic octavetuned, chromatic, and orchestral accompaniment. The singlereed diatonic harmonic is the most popular and can be heard in rock, country, blues, and folk music. It features 10 holes with 20 reeds, 10 for blow notes and 10 for draw notes.

A Physicist uses the scientific method to test hypotheses (guess or belief) and develop scientific laws. A couple of famous physicists include Isaac Newton and Albert Einstein. Physicists observe natural wonders and use mathematics to develop theories which help explain why they occur. • Physicists are usually good problem solvers with strong attention to detail and a desire to answer big questions. • Some physicists study theory while others apply it to the development of products such as medical equipment and electronic devices. • Important subjects related to physics include chemistry, algebra, calculus, statistics and computer science. • Courses that can be taken as part of a physics degree include thermodynamics, astrophysics, electricity and magnetism, particle physics, nuclear physics, kinematics, quantum physics and more.

Memorial Day is May 25th! Memorial Day is a U.S. holiday that honors and remembers those who died while serving in the military. The roots of the Memorial Day observance goes back to 1865 and the end of the Civil War. It was known as Decoration Day until 1882 and then it was changed to Memorial Day. The holiday was traditionally held on the 30th of May. In 1971, Congress declared it a national holiday and changed it to the last Monday in May. It is customary to fly the U.S. flag at half staff on this day. It also marks the unofficial start to the summer season. Write about what you can do to honor this day? _________________________________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Paramount Schools Middle School Students Celebrate Earth Day by Picking Up Trash
Seventh-grade students at Paramount Charter Academy spent a part of Earth Day outside today cleaning up trash near their school. Teachers added a lesson into the clean-up day by asking students to graph the types and amount of trash they found. The students will work to determine the types of trash most commonly found, determine the areas with the most trash, and make inferences as to why specific areas have more or less trash.
