What Is A Harpsichord? The harpsichord is a musical instrument that looks like a piano but it sounds much different. Like the piano, it is played by means of a keyboard. It produces it’s sound by plucking a string (rather than striking, as in a piano) when a key is pressed. The harpsichord was used in Renaissance and Baroque music. The first music written for the solo harpsichord was published around the 16th century. Some of the famous composers that wrote music for the harpsichord were William Byrd, Domenico Scarlatti, J.S. Bach, Joseph Haydn, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. During the late 18th century, it gradually disappeared from the music scene with the rise of the piano, but in the 20th century, it came back. It’s being used in historical performance of older music, in new compositions and in popular culture.
Johann Sebastian Bach Johann Sebastian Bach was and is a famous composer. He was born in Eisenach, Germany. He was born March 21, 1685. His father was a town musician. In fact, over 300 years of his ancestors all worked as professional musicians. As a child, Bach's father taught him to play violin and harpsichord. His parents had died by the time Johann was ten, so his older brother raised him. His brother, Johann Christoph was the organist at St. Michael’s Church, Ohrdruf in Germany and it is assumed he taught Bach much about the organ. He also learned about organ building where he fixed the church organ often. Johann held three major jobs in his life. He first worked for a duke, then a prince and finally became the director of music at the St. Thomas Church and School in Leipzig, Germany. His job kept him very busy. He became the cantor, organist and music composer and remained there for the rest of his life. In his spare time, Bach conducted a group of musicians and performed at a local coffee house. He was thought of as just an ordinary musician until about 100 years after his death. At this time, Felix Mendelssohn, another composer conducted a performance of Bach’s St. Matthew Passion. Bach composed in many established musical forms, including, for example, the cantata and fugue, and developed them into complex pieces. He composed over 1,100 works in almost every musical genre (except opera). Bach was married twice and had over 20 children, including four who became famous musicians in their own right, including Carl Philipp Emanuel, Wilhelm Friedemann, Johann Christoph Friedrich, and Johann Christian. Bach is now known as one of the great geniuses of music.

The State of Israel • Israel is located in the Middle East and is about the size of New Jersey. In the east, Israel is bordered by Jordan, Syria, and the Palestinian Authority. Egypt borders Israel to the south, and Lebanon borders to the north. • Israel borders two seas, the Mediterranean Sea and the Dead Sea. The water in the Dead Sea is so salty that no plants can live there and the water is warm all year a round. The mud in the sea is good for your skin! • The government is a Parliamentary Democracy. Israel is the only fully democratic country in the Middle East. Unlike in America, no one party has control of the government. Instead, all the political parties get seats depending on how many votes they get. This way, they have to all work together. • The official languages in Israel are Hebrew and Arabic. • Famous inventions like voicemail service were invented in Israel. • The currency of Israel is new shekal. • The population is estimated to be about 7,171,600 people! • Major industries include military equipment, cut diamonds, jewelry, integrated circuits, printing machinery, and telecommunications equipment. • The capital of Israel is Jerusalem. Jerusalem is considered a holy city by Jews, Christians, and Muslims. • Israeli climate varies between snowy mountains and hot deserts. • Israel has the highest number of scientists, techRooftop view of Jerusalem. nicians, and engineers per
capita in the world with 140 scientists, technicians, and engineers per 10,000 employees. • In the last 60 years, Israel has planted over 200 million trees to bring back the woodlands that were destroyed.
Salt formations at the Dead Sea
• The city of Jericho is one of the oldest human settlements in the world! It is said to have been founded in 9500 BC. • Israel was founded in 1948, and is the only country in which the majority of its people are Jewish. • All students in Israel have to serve in the military after high school. Men have to serve for three years and women have to
serve for two years. • Israel is home to a type of community called a Kibbutz. A Kibbutz is a shared community where families live together and help maintain the Kibbutz. A child would attend school just like in America, but afterwards would go to a children’s house and participate in activities with other children there. Then they would return home to their families. • Israel is the only country in the world who entered the 21st century with more trees in its territory than it had in the 20th century. • Israel’s bank notes have Braille markings on them so that the blind can identify them easily.

I Want To Be A Chef! A chef does more than just cook and bake! Although that is a top requirement that you must LOVE to do! A chef oversees the daily operation of the kitchen in a restaurant and must be highly skilled but creative while being able to work efficiently under a great deal of pressure. The chef is responsible for designing menus, developing original recipes, keeping their kitchen stocked with ingredients and able to account for what it costs to manage their operation. A chef also must show leadership ability and manage a full kitchen staff and motivate them to work efficiently. The position of chef
Harrison
in most restaurants requires a completed four-year university degree in the culinary arts, training that’s completed at a technical school, culinary arts schools or community college. While in school, prospective chefs take courses in nutrition, food storage, portion control, inventory and purchasing. A chef must also learn to handle and maintain kitchen equipment, proper knife technique and banquet service. Even though formal programs are the first source of training, much of a chef’s education comes from on-the-job training and apprenticeships. Chefs who have vast professional experience and formal training are eligible for certification by the American Culinary Federation. It’s not mandatory that a chef becomes certified however, it could lead to a higher salary and more opportunity.

Watch Out For Poison Plants This Summer! Poison Ivy, Poison Oak and Poison Sumac all contain the same rash causing substance called urushiol (yoo-roo-sheeol). It is an odorless, colorless oil. The leaves of these plants release urushiol when they are bumped, torn or brushed up against. Once released, it can easily get on a person’s skin where it can cause big trouble. You can also get it by not touching a plant at all! Urushiol can be transferred from one person to another by touching or you an get it by petting a dog that’s been roaming in the woods and has come in contact with a poison plant. Urush-
iol can also travel airborne if someone burns the plants to clear the brush. Urushiol is an allergen because it causes an allergic reaction. Not everyone gets this reaction but over 50% will. The symptoms will appear within hours or days after coming in contact with the plant. The skin will become red and swollen, blisters will appear and it becomes itchy. Check with your doctor if you develop any type of rash or fever. You may have to go in for an office visit. The doctor will look at your rash and could prescribe cool showers and calamine lotion. In severe cases, a liquid or pill medications called an antihistamine may be needed to decrease itching and redness. Or a steroid may be prescribed. The best approach to not having this problem, is to avoid getting the problem. Learn to identify poison ivy, oak and sumac. Avoid areas where you know contain poison plants. Wear long sleeves and pants if you’re in an area that may contain these plants. If you come in contact with urushiol oil, try to wash it off your skin right away. Be sure to use soap. Don’t try to clean up in the bathtub - that will spread the oil. A shower is better.

Just over 60 students from Olivet, grades Kindergarten thru 8th grade, participated in the Math-a-Thon fundraiser this year. REED INSURANCE AGENCY “Voted Favorite Insurance Company For 14 Years
THANK YOU! Olivet’s FPE wants to THANK the volunteers who came in once a week, all school year, to read and practice math with some of our Kindergarten, First, and Second grade students. Our students were always excited and grateful for the volunteers who came in to work with them. These volunteers helped our students to successfully reach higher levels in their reading and their math skills. To show our appreciation, we had a small little gathering at the end of the year to celebrate our students’ growth and our gratefulness to our volunteers for all of their time and hard work. We look forward to our volunteers coming back again next year. THANK YOU!

Exercising This Summer Is Easier Than You Think! Yeah! It’s summertime! We find it easy to sit around and watch TV, play video games or be on the computer. Those are fun things to do - but - it’s also important to choose to be active! Children and adults NEED to exercise! Why do kids need exercise? • Exercise makes you feel strong and healthy. • Your brain releases endorphins as you exercise. Endorphins are chemicals that make you feel good. • It helps you to relax and calms down stress. • Exercise helps you to have more energy. • Your muscles, bones, heart and lungs get stronger. • You sleep better at night. • Exercise helps you manage your weight. A great way to exercise and you don’t even realize you’re doing it - is to go to the playground! Here’s an example: When you are on the swings, you use your arms to hold on and your legs to pump! On the slide - you go up the ladder
using your hands, arms and legs - PLUS you get a bonus when you slide down! AND you definitely need strength to use the monkey bars! The playground is a good place when you learn motor skills - coordination, strength and agility. You will also become more self assured and confident as you play with your friends and make new ones. Here are more exercise ideas! • Walk your dog or give your dog a bath. • Throw the frisbee or ball back and forth with a friend. • Fly kites on a windy day. • Go on a nature hike with your parents or a responsible adult. • Ride your bike - go skating - play soccer - play baseball - play basketball. • Help your parents in the yard - pull weeds, rake and plant flowers. • Play hopscotch - jump rope - play tag - use a hula hoop! • Go swimming but make sure you have a responsible adult with you! • Learn to dance this summer! There are so many exercise options you can have. It’s important to get up off the couch - go outside and have some fun! Make sure you wear sunscreen and take plenty of water with you to stay hydrated. That way you can have a safe and fun summer!
