While in the second grade, Christian Bucks suggested that a Buddy Bench in the playground area could help students to make new friends at school. After his story appeared on TV stations and in several newspapers, it went “viral” and now thousands of schools all across America and around the world have Buddy Benches in theirr school playgrounds. Summer vacation is quickly coming to an end and another exciting school year is about to begin! Are you getting ready?

Expires 9/15/16

Look over the school supplies you had last year and see what you may need to replace this year. It’s a good idea to make a list. Sometimes, your new teacher will send you a list of things you will need before the school year begins. Remember, everything doesn’t always have to be brand new. Calculators, crayons, scissors, pencils, pens, and more can be used from year to year. Have a great August! Debi

The Great Lakes And Glaciers Around a billion years ago, a fracture in the earth running from what is now Oklahoma to Lake Superior generated volcanic activity. It almost split North America. Over 20 million years, lava from the fracture flowed in this area. It created mountains covering the regions now known as northern Wisconsin and Minnesota and the Laurentian Mountains were formed in Eastern Canada. Occasional volcanic activity continued while these mountains eroded. Molten magma below the highlands of what is now Lake Superior spewed out to its sides causing the highlands to sink and form a huge rock basin that would one day hold Lake Superior. With time, the fracture stabilized and the rock tilted north to south. This region went from fire to ice with the arrival of the glaciers. In fact, if you were to go back in time and visit Michigan 14,000 years ago, you would have found the Great Lakes area covered in

Cliffs of Door County in Wisconsin a sheet of ice, called a glacier. These sheets averaged over one mile thick. At rates of only a little over a half foot per day, the glacier slowly made its way across the Great Lakes basin. It carved out deep valleys and moved large amounts of soil. As the glacier melted and moved towards Canada, it left behind a series of large holes that filled with meltwater from the glacier. These formed the basic shape of the Great Lakes. It wasn’t until around 6,000 years ago that the lakes took their final shape we see today. When the glaciers melted and began receding, their leading edges left behind high ridges and rock formations. Some of these can be seen today in the Cliffs of Door County in Wisconsin and the “flowerpots” on Bruce Peninsula in Ontario.

Try This!

Create a rippling rainbow! What you will need: paper plate crepe paper glue scissors

1. Cut out the shape of your fish from the paper plate. 2. rip strips of different colored crepe paper 3. start at the tail and glue strips along one edge and place on the plate. 4. layer them in different colors and move towards the head. 5. after the glue dries, trim the edges to the shape of your fish.

Rippling Rainbows Rainbowfish are a group of super colorful fish from Australia and islands near it. They are freshwater fish that live in rivers, lakes and swamps. Rainbowfish are omnivorous (they eat plants and animals like us), and eat shrimp, crayfish, insects and algae. They like to live in school and explore their home together.

Rainbowfish get their name from the amazing range of colors that all the different types can be. But their scientific name actually comes from the fact that many of them have black bands along their sides. Their are 71 species of rainbowfish that have been found in the wild. But, there are probably many that have never even been seen in the wild! Some of the fish are named after their markings like spotted and barred, while some are named for their home, like Lake Wanam and the Tami River.

A Rainbow for a Rainy Day

They lay eggs in big mats that stick to seaweed. The eggs hatch just a couple weeks later and the babies swim off in the deeper rainy season rivers.

Rainbowfish make great pets! They are cool school fish that add color to any freshwater fish tank.

they change color too! Depending on their mood, they may be darker or almost even white! Now that is a cool rainbow.

There are many types of rainbows, so be sure to pick your favorite. As they get bigger, they will become more beautiful.

They like it best to be in groups of 3 - 6 and will patrol your tank with their Rainbow fish aren’t just cool colors... flashes of color.

Turtle Trivia: Did you know? ► Turtles have been living on earth for a very long time. For millions of years they shared the planet with dinosaurs. They survived and the dinosaurs did not. ► Turtles can be found living all over the world. There are over 300 different kinds of turtles that live in the oceans, wetlands, forests, grasslands, and deserts. ► Turtles don’t need to change their shells as they grow. The turtle’s shell grows with them like our bones do when we grow. ► Turtles are reptiles. ► Turtles can live to be very old. A common painted turtle can be live to be up to 25 years old. Some land turtles have lived well over 100 years. ► Turtles are cold-blooded, which means they soak up heat from their environment. Turtles often warm themselves by sun bathing. ► The Leatherback is the largest sea turtle and can grow to over 6 feet long and weighs over 2,000 pounds. ► Stories about turtles can be found in many cultures around the world. Turtles in the stories usually symbolize peace, patience, and long life.

The Green Sea Turtle lives in the tropical seas of the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans.

Did you know that turtles have been painted, drawn, and sculpted for thousands of years? Here is a fun step by step turtle for you to draw and color. Take your time and have fun. Contributed by Rebecca Nechuta, KidzArt of Okemos

Let’s Make A Green Sea Turtle!

1. Draw an oval shape, making one end come to a point.

2. Inside the oval shape, make a smaller oval.

3. To create a shell pattern, begin at the top - drawing 2 angled lines and connect them with a straight line as shown.

Since 1960

4. Draw 2 “v” shapes and connect with a straight line as the red arrow shows.

5. Continue this pattern down the entire center of the shell.

6. To finish the pattern, draw straight lines from each point to the outer shell as shown.

7. At the top of the oval, draw the head as shown. The front flippers are near the head. Draw a “V” shape. Add a short line to create the top part of the flipper, then enclose it making a triangular shape. Do this on both sides of the head.

8. Draw the tail and two back flippers as shown.

9. Add some detailing, such as irregular spots on the flippers, tail and head. Time to fill in with color. Use markers, colored pencil or watercolor. Use several shades of greens and browns. Have fun!

Seniors Pay a Special Visit to District Youth Over 20 Eastern seniors clad in their caps and gowns paid a visit to Pattengill and Fairview ahead of their graduation ceremony. At Pattengill they spoke to 6th grade classes – giving advice and answering questions the students had. Some of them even had a chance to visit with their former teachers while at the school. When they stopped at Fairveiw, they enjoyed a clap-out as they walked through the halls. The seniors enjoyed themselves and the younger students were incredibly excited to see them. What a great way to bring their journey at the Lansing School District full-circle!

Ready, Set, RUN! Gier Park recently hosted its annual Fun Run. Each of the school’s K through 3 classes had a chance to run around the large grounds of the school. There was a health fair in the gym - Ingham County Health Department and Capital Area District Libraries were there to support summer reading! Gier Park’s community partners also made an appearance, including Playmakers, Gone to the Dogs Grooming, Georgio’s Pizza, Verizon Wireless Dewitt, Golden Harvest Restaurant, Tanger Outlet Mall, Preuss’ Pets, Max and Erma’s, Quality Plumbing and more! The Lansing Police Department – another of Gier Park’s community partners – was on hand and representing their GREAT program (which enables the nation’s youth to better resist criminality and anti-social lifestyles associated with gang involvement) ZLWK ERWK RI¿FHUV DQG YROXQWHHUV DOLNH

Celebrating Differences Students at North Elementary participated in a school-wide project with a focus on celebrating differences amongst the student body’s very diverse population. Project Unify sponsored several events leading up to a week long campaign and assembly. The Leaders Encouraging Acceptance & Diversity (LEAD) 5th and 6th grade leadership group – led by their Project Unify Coordinator – helped implement several activities over the course of the project. LEAD members read “All the Colors of the Earth” by Sheila Hamanaka to each class and then the students participated in a school-wide art project – based on the book – where they painted rainbow colored self-portraits. The portraits were framed and used to create a video produced by a Lansing Community College media student. During “Celebrating Our Differences” week, LEAD members provided daily morning announcements on diversity and accepting our differences. Students attended the “Diversity is Cool” assembly at the end of the week. Staff and students viewed the “All the Colors of the Earth” video and were treated to a special ventriloquist performance.
