Mellow Mushrooms Mushroom corals are very unique creatures. Most of these animals are smaller than a CD, and some are as small as a quarter. They come in many colors: orange, purple, blue, pink, red, green and all the combinations in between. Mushrooms also can be bumpy, smooth, striped or frilly.

Try This!

Related to anemones, most mushrooms have symbiotic algae that live inside them and provide them some food. They will also collect tiny bits of food in the mucus that covers their bodies and will eat that for dinner. Unlike anemones, they do not have long tentacles, but some have tentacles that they will use to keep other corals from getting too close.

Make sure jar is washed and clean. Note: any jar will do if you desire a larger snow globe. Attach figurine to inside of jar lid using florist clay. If you are using a small object, it's a good idea to build up the clay so the object will appear taller. Attach any optional items with the clay (greenery, berries, etc.). Use your imagination, but make sure it is waterproof and won't dissolve. Fill jar with water to within 1/2 inch of top. Use cold water as warm water tends to cloud. Sprinkle 1 tablespoon of glitter, or snow into water. Insert figurine in water, screw on lid. Let stand overnight, lid side up. Use glue/sealer to ensure that it is waterproof and attach decorative ribbon over lid. You may also paint the lid rather than use ribbon. Use your imagination, the possibilities are endless! Hints: Make sure the objects are secure in the clay, you could even glue them for added security. Before gluing or sealing the lid, make sure you have sufficient amount of glitter. Depending on the size of the jar, you may need more or less.

Several students read poems and their personal notes of gratitude to the veterans. Under the direction of music teacher, Mr. Alex Ellul, each grade level stood and sang a military medley of songs. Mrs. Suzanne Cloudman created a special music video, displaying pictures and memories the veterans shared with the school. The Webberville STARS created cards and patriotic art-

My Throat Hurts! If someone in your family or at school has strep throat, there is a good chance you may get it too. Strep throat is spread when healthy people come into contact with people who have it. When a person with strep throat sneezes or blows his or her nose and you are close by, or if you share the same forks, spoons, or straws, the bacteria can spread to you. If you get strep throat, you will start to feel sick within 5 days after you’ve been exposed to it. What will you do? Tell your parents! Go to the doctor! Your doctor will look into your mouth to see if your throat is red and your tonsils are swollen and covered with white or yellow spots. He or she will also look for small red spots on the roof of your mouth. Most of the time, strep will give you a sore throat, headache, stomach ache, and fever. To prove that what you have is strep throat, your doctor may do one or two tests. First, the doctor can do a rapid strep test to check for strep bacteria. He or she will rub a cotton swab over the back of your throat. With this test, the doctor may be able to find out in less than 1 hour if you have strep throat. If the first test doesn't prove anything, then your doctor may do a longer test called a throat culture. A swab from your throat will then be rubbed on a special dish and the dish will be left to sit for two nights. Sometimes this test will make you gag - but it doesn’t hurt. If you have strep throat, streptococci bacteria will usually grow in the dish within the next 1 to 2 days. If you end up having strep throat, your doctor will give you an antibiotic which is a medicine that kills bacteria. Usually the antibiotic used for strep throat is a form of penicillin. You will take penicillin as a pill, a liquid, or a shot. To make sure the bacteria go away completely and don't spread to other parts of your body, you must finish all of the medicine and that will usually only take a week to 10 days. Your mom or dad may give you acetaminophen to get rid of aches, pains, and fever. You'll want to have soothing drinks, like tea and warm chicken soup. It's best to avoid spicy and acidic foods, like orange juice, because they could irritate your tender throat. Your doctor will tell you to stay home from school until you have been taking the antibiotic for at least 24 to 48 hours. This way, you won't spread the bacteria to others. It’s hard to prevent a sore throat. But you can take these steps to try to prevent it: • Make sure the person with strep throat covers his or her mouth when sneezing and coughing. • Don't handle used tissues or other germy items. • Wash your hands regularly, especially before cooking and eating. • Wash dishes and silverware in hot, soapy water. • Keep sores and cuts clean because strep can get in there and cause problems, too. Strep throat is no fun, but after feeling sick for 2 or 3 days, most kids start feeling better.

6W 0DU\œV 3LQFNQH\ (OHPHQWDU\ 1HZV Students Have Lovingly i l Created 8,000 Rosaries Students at St. Mary Catholic School in Pinckney are marking the 15th year of student rosary making. A Holy Rosary is a string of knots and beads used to count component prayers of the Holy Rosary, an important tool used to help meditate on the life of Jesus in the Catholic faith. The tradition began in 2003 when former Teacher’s Aid Sarah Salvatore was asked by a few students to teach them how to make a rosary. That simple request has turned into a yearly tradition and service project, involving the fourth grade class. Over the years, St. Mary fourth graders have created more than 8,000 rosaries, enough to supply three to every person residing in Pinckney. Wack, St. M Mary alumW k parentt off ttwo St l ni. “It’s a lot of fun teaching the kids rosary-making, said Wack. “After a few weeks of practice, they become quite good at it. The students are very excited to make the rosaries and be a part of sharing this special gift of prayer with so many people. Each year I am amazed at the many different color combinations they come up with. “And if each year’s class can beat the record for most rosaries made, that’s great, but their focus is on doing their best to make them with quality vs. quantity. There is usually an end-of-year treat to celebrate their achievement. Rosaries made by St. Mary students are donated to missionaries, hospitals, funeral homes, local migrant farms, and home-bound Catholics through St. Mary Parish’s Rosary Altar Society.

Ice Skating Is A Fun Activity! Did you know that humans have been skating for thousands of years? The first skates were made from animal bones and attached to the feet with leather straps. People used skates as a way of crossing frozen lakes and rivers in the winter. In the 1850’s, figure skating began. Skaters started trying various spins and jumps on the ice. The first World Figure Skating Championships for men were held in 1896 in Russia. The first World Figure Skating Championships for women were held in Switzerland in 1906. Ice skating is a popular sport and thanks to indoor rinks, it can be enjoyed year round. As a competitive sport, skating includes figure skating, pair skating, speed skating, ice dancing, and ice hockey. So, one of the interesting concepts of skating is that it can be done alone, in pairs or on teams. Ice skating can be enjoyed at the ice rink or on a safe, frozen and approved body of water. Always check with your parent to make sure where you skate is safe. Another great part about skating is that it’s enjoyed by all age groups. Ice skating is an exciting, relatively inexpensive activity that provides a great source of exercise and entertainment for the entire family. Learning to ice skate is actually quite easy and a lot of fun. It however, does require determination and a lot of practice. Some benefits of skating include gaining muscle strength, endurance, balance, coordination and flexibility. Children must be mature enough to listen to his or her instructor and follow directions when learning to skate. rectly and how to get back up! Whether you are interested in skating for recreation or pursuing competitive skating - school is the first step. Each level is designed by professionals to meet a child’s age, ability and goals. Once this is completed, advanced skaters can move on to figure skating, ice dancing, ice hockey, synchronized or speed skating. Whether you skate indoors or outdoors, it is important that you dress for warmth by layering your clothing. Indoor arenas are kept between 50 and 60 degrees, so jackets are recommended. If you are outside skating, you need to dress for the temperature. Your clothing should be close fitting and comfortable. Waterproof snow suits are great for young children. Another suggestion is waterproof mittens, gloves and hat to keep ears warm. Make sure you wear a pair of warm, seamless socks. Helmets are recommended for children 6 and under and all beginning skaters. Skates can be rented from most indoor ice rinks but, if you purchase skates, make sure they are professionally fit. Remember, you will need to have your ice COLOR skates sharpened after every ME! four to six hours of ice time
