While in the second grade, Christian Bucks suggested that a Buddy Bench in the playground area could help students to make new friends at school. After his story appeared on TV stations and in several newspapers, it went “viral” and now thousands of schools all across America and around the world have Buddy Benches in theirr school playgrounds. Look over the school supplies you had last year and see what you may need to replace this year. It’s a good idea to make a list. Sometimes, your new teacher will send you a list of things you will need before the school year begins. Remember, everything doesn’t always have to be brand new. Calculators, crayons, scissors, pencils, pens, and more can be used from year to year. Have a great August!

Turtle Trivia: Did you know? ► Turtles have been living on earth for a very long time. For millions of years they shared the planet with dinosaurs. They survived and the dinosaurs did not. ► Turtles can be found living all over the world. There are over 300 different kinds of turtles that live in the oceans, wetlands, forests, grasslands, and deserts. ► Turtles don’t need to change their shells as they grow. The turtle’s shell grows with them like our bones do when we grow. ► Turtles are reptiles. ► Turtles can live to be very old. A common painted turtle can be live to be up to 25 years old. Some land turtles have lived well over 100 years. ► Turtles are cold-blooded, which means they soak up heat from their environment. Turtles often warm themselves by sun bathing. ► The Leatherback is the largest sea turtle and can grow to over 6 feet long and weighs over 2,000 pounds. ► Stories about turtles can be found in many cultures around the world. Turtles in the stories usually symbolize peace, patience, and long life.

The Green Sea Turtle lives in the tropical seas of the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans.

Did you know that turtles have been painted, drawn, and sculpted for thousands of years? Here is a fun step by step turtle for you to draw and color. Take your time and have fun. Contributed by Rebecca Nechuta, KidzArt of Okemos

Let’s Make A Green Sea Turtle!

1. Draw an oval shape, making one end come to a point.

2. Inside the oval shape, make a smaller oval.

3. To create a shell pattern, begin at the top - drawing 2 angled lines and connect them with a straight line as shown.

4. Draw 2 “v” shapes and connect with a straight line as the red arrow shows.

5. Continue this pattern down the entire center of the shell.

6. To finish the pattern, draw straight lines from each point to the outer shell as shown.

7. At the top of the oval, draw the head as shown. The front flippers are near the head. Draw a “V” shape. Add a short line to create the top part of the flipper, then enclose it making a triangular shape. Do this on both sides of the head.

Kids’ World News • 616-233-9190 • www.kidsworldnews.org

8. Draw the tail and two back flippers as shown.

9. Add some detailing, such as irregular spots on the flippers, tail and head. Time to fill in with color. Use markers, colored pencil or watercolor. Use several shades of greens and browns. Have fun!

First Day Of School Coming Right Up! The first day of school is exciting. Some kids feel nervous or a little scared on the first day because of all the new things. New teachers, new friends and maybe even a new school. Most teachers start off the school year by introducing themselves and talking about all the stuff you’ll be doing this year. They may also talk about classroom rules you need to know. Some ask that students introduce themselves to the class and tell something about themselves. You may already know most of the kids in your class but, the first day is also a great time to make a new friend if there is someone new in your classroom. Make the first move and say hello. Making someone new feel comfortable in their new environment is a wonderful thing to do. A great idea for starting the new year is to make some resolutions to study smarter this year. When you do well in school, you feel better about yourself on the whole. The following are some ideas to help. 1. Pay attention in class. Make sure you are sitting in a good seat that lets you pay attention. Can you see the chalkboard? If you can’t tell your parents or teacher. 2. Take good notes in class. Write down facts that your teacher mentions in class or writes on the board. Review these notes later as they will help you with quizzes or papers you need to write. 3. Plan ahead. Don’t wait until Thursday night to study for Friday’s test! It makes it hard to do your best. Write down on a calendar your test and assignment due dates. Then every day plan how much time to spend on each subject. 4. Break it up if there’s a lot to study. Study some each day. That’s where practice comes in. The more days you spend reviewing

McDONALD

something, the more likely it will stick in your brain. Also study your homework for about 45 minutes, take a break for some water or snack and begin again if you have a lot to do. Fight the temptation to turn on the TV and stop doing what you need to. 5. Ask for help if you don’t understand the material. Teachers are more than willing to clear up the confusion or if you’re home, ask mom or dad. 6. Get some sleep. Your brain needs time to digest all the information you’ve studied. With a good night’s sleep, you will do better on the test your going to take!

James Earl Carter, Jr. 39th President of United States, 1977-1981 Jimmy Carter was born in Plains, Georgia on October 1, 1924. The mainstays of his upbringing were peanut farming, politics and devotion to the Baptist faith. In 1946, after graduating from the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, he married Rosalynn Smith. They have three sons, John, James, Donnel and a daughter, Amy. After seven years as a naval officer, Carter returned to Plains. In 1962, he entered state politics and eight years later was elected Governor of Georgia. He emphasized ecology, efficiency in government and the removal of racial barriers. In December 1974, he began a two year campaign for the presidency. He worked hard and ended up winning against President Gerald R. Ford. President Carter had a number of achievements in domestic affairs: • He dealt with the energy shortage by establishing a national energy policy and by decontrolling domestic petroleum prices to stimulate production. • He prompted government efficiency through civil service reform and proceeded with deregulation of the trucking and airline industries. • He sought to improve the environment. • His expansion of the national park system included protection of 103 million acres of Alaskan lands. • To increase human and social services, he created the Department of Education, bolstered the Social Security system, and appointed record numbers of women, blacks, and Hispanics to Government jobs. • Under his presidency the US officially recognized the people’s republic of China in 1979. In foreign affairs, his championing of human rights was coldly received by the Soviet Union and other nations. In the Middle East, with the Camp David agreement of 1978,

President Carter and his wife volunteer one week a year for Habitat for Humanity, a nonprofit organization that helps needy people in the United States and in other countries renovate and build homes for themselves.

Kids’ World News • 616-233-9190 • www.kidsworldnews.org

he helped bring amity between Egypt and Isreal. He obtained ratification of the Panama Canal treaties. He also completed negotiation of the SALT II nuclear limitation treaty with the Soviet Union which got suspended with the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. It was during President Carter’s time in office that the seizure of the U.S. embassy staff by Iran happened. Continuing the difficult negotiations over the hostages, Iran finally released the 52 Americans the same day Carter left office. Interesting Facts: • President Carter was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 . It came as a response to his work in promoting human rights, trying to resolve conflicts peacefully and providing health care and food to the world's poor. • President Carter collects bottles and arrowheads. • He reads 3 to 4 books per week and has taken a speed reading course. • To keep in shape, President Carter rides a bicycle, jogs and plays tennis. • His favorite spectator sport is baseball.

Create a rippling rainbow! What you will need: paper plate crepe paper glue scissors

1. Cut out the shape of your fish from the paper plate. 2. rip strips of different colored crepe paper 3. start at the tail and glue strips along one edge and place on the plate. 4. layer them in different colors and move towards the head. 5. after the glue dries, trim the edges to the shape of your fish.

Rippling Rainbows Rainbowfish are a group of super colorful fish from Australia and islands near it. They are freshwater fish that live in rivers, lakes and swamps. Rainbowfish are omnivorous (they eat plants and animals like us), and eat shrimp, crayfish, insects and algae. They like to live in school and explore their home together.

Rainbowfish get their name from the amazing range of colors that all the different types can be. But their scientific name actually comes from the fact that many of them have black bands along their sides. Their are 71 species of rainbowfish that have been found in the wild. But, there are probably many that have never even been seen in the wild! Some of the fish are named after their markings like spotted and barred, while some are named for their home, like Lake Wanam and the Tami River.

A Rainbow for a Rainy Day

They lay eggs in big mats that stick to seaweed. The eggs hatch just a couple weeks later and the babies swim off in the deeper rainy season rivers.

Rainbowfish make great pets! They are cool school fish that add color to any freshwater fish tank.

they change color too! Depending on their mood, they may be darker or almost even white! Now that is a cool rainbow.

There are many types of rainbows, so be sure to pick your favorite. As they get bigger, they will become more beautiful.

They like it best to be in groups of 3 - 6 and will patrol your tank with their Rainbow fish aren’t just cool colors... flashes of color.

The Great Lakes And Glaciers Around a billion years ago, a fracture in the earth running from what is now Oklahoma to Lake Superior generated volcanic activity. It almost split North America. Over 20 million years, lava from the fracture flowed in this area. It created mountains covering the regions now known as northern Wisconsin and Minnesota and the Laurentian Mountains were formed in Eastern Canada. Occasional volcanic activity continued while these mountains eroded. Molten magma below the highlands of what is now Lake Superior spewed out to its sides causing the highlands to sink and form a huge rock basin that would one day hold Lake Superior. With time, the fracture stabilized and the rock tilted north to south. This region went from fire to ice with the arrival of the glaciers. In fact, if you were to go back in time and visit Michigan 14,000 years ago, you would have found the Great Lakes area covered in

Cliffs of Door County in Wisconsin a sheet of ice, called a glacier. These sheets averaged over one mile thick. At rates of only a little over a half foot per day, the glacier slowly made its way across the Great Lakes basin. It carved out deep valleys and moved large amounts of soil. As the glacier melted and moved towards Canada, it left behind a series of large holes that filled with meltwater from the glacier. These formed the basic shape of the Great Lakes. It wasn’t until around 6,000 years ago that the lakes took their final shape we see today. When the glaciers melted and began receding, their leading edges left behind high ridges and rock formations. Some of these can be seen today in the Cliffs of Door County in Wisconsin and the “flowerpots” on Bruce Peninsula in Ontario.

Riding Your Bike Safely Riding your bike is a great way to get some exercise! From first learning to ride a tricycle to the celebrated arrival of the two wheeled bike, it is something that can also be viewed as an achievement. Riding a bike develops coordination, balance, works the muscle groups as well a keen form of transportation. It is very important when riding your bike you observe some safety rules and precautions to keep your self safe. The following are some general rules to follow. 1. Protect your head and wear a helmet. Wear one that fits snugly and sits flat on the head. Extra padding comes with children’s helmets to ensure a proper fit. Bicycle helmets reduce head injuries as most serious injuries are to the head. 2. Assure bicycle readiness. Make sure your bicycle is adjusted properly. Before using your bicycle, check to make sure all parts are secure and working well. The handlebars should be firmly in place and turn easily. Your wheels must be straight and secure. Install a carrier to the back of your bike if you need to carry things with you. 3. Always check your brakes before riding. Control your speed by using your brakes. If your bicycle has hand brakes, apply the rear brake slightly before the front brake. Always keep your brakes adjusted. Ride slowly in wet weather and apply your brakes earlier because it takes more distance to stop in wet weather. 4. See and be seen. Wear clothes that make you more visible. Always wear neon, florescent or other bright colors when riding a bicycle. 5. Avoid biking at night. It is more dangerous to ride at night than during the day. Most bikes are equipped for daylight use and need to be adapted for night use. 6. Stay alert. Always look for obstacles in your path. Watch out for potholes, cracks, expansion joints, railroad tracks, wet leaves, drainage grates or anything that can make you fall.

7. Go with the flow. The safe way is the RIGHT way. Ride on the right side in a straight path. Always go single file in the same direction as other vehicles. Be aware of your surroundings and stay off busy streets. 8. Check for traffic. Always be aware of what is around you before entering any street or intersection. Walk your bike when crossing a street watching for left or right turning traffic. 9. Learn the rules of the road. Obey the traffic laws. Bicycles must obey the same rules as motorists. Learn and follow all the traffic signs, laws and rules. Signal your moves. Be courteous to pedestrians. Never wear headphones while riding a bike. Take advantage of bike lanes and off road paths. 10. When stopping always lock your bike. 11. Do not do stunt tricks, ride double or hitch rides. It is important to make good decisions when riding a bike.

Dalmatians Are Natives of Croatia The Dalmatian dog is a breed whose roots are often said to trace back to Dalmatia, a region of Croatia where the first illustrations of the dog have been found. The role of ancient dalmatians was as a “dog of war” guarding the borders in Dalmatia. To this day, Dalmatians retain a high guarding instinct. The Dalmatian is noted for its unique black- or brown - spotted coat and was mainly used as a carriage dog in its early days in Europe. Today, this dog remains a well loved family pet and many dog enthusiasts enter their pets into competitions of the many kennel clubs. Dalmatians are a mid-sized, muscular dog with lots of endurance and stamina. They weigh full grown 35 to 70 pounds. The males are slightly larger than the females. They stand up to 24 inches high. Their ears are thin and taper towards the tip and set high close to the head. Dalmatians eye color varies.from brown, amber or blue. Some dogs have one blue eye and one brown eye or other combinations. When Dalmatians are born, their coats are plain and white. Spots appear within a week after their birth. One month later, they usually have most of their spots, although they continue to develop some at a much slower rate throughout their life. These dogs have a strong hunting instinct. In sports, Dalmatians are used as bird dogs, trail hounds, retrievers or in packs for boar or stag hunting. But they are best known for their role as firefighting escorts and firehouse mascots. They

are good watchdogs and it is believed that they may have been useful to fire brigades as guard dogs to protect a firehouse and its equipment. When fire engines were drawn by fast and powerful horses, the horses were a tempting target for thieves, so Dalmatians guarded them. In recent times, the Dalmatian is also associated in the United States with Budweiser Beer and the Busch Garden theme parks. Their team of Clydesdale horses is always accompanied by a Dalmatian carriage dog. Historically, Dalmatians were used by brewers to guard the wagon while the drivers were making deliveries. In 1956, English author Dodie Smith wrote The One Hundred and One Dalmatians, which, in 1961, was adapted as the Disney film One Hundred and One Dalmatians. In 1996, the film was remade as 101 Dalmatians and the following year developed into a Disney TV series titled 101 Dalmatians: The Series.
