The Smell of Spring

Girl and Tall Flowers submitted by: Khazenah C., Age 11, Della Lamb Elementary Charter School, Kansas City, Missouri

Submitted by: Ryu D., Age 12, Fox Lane Middle School, Bedford, New York

The smell of Spring is stuck in my head, Like a sword in a rock. So full of life, sweet like honey. As I watch the bees busy at the flowers, Like commuters rushing into office buildings. The little droplets of water Like feathers floating freely down from a bird in flight. The feel of grass between my toes, As the breeze flows through my hair. The Spring passes me by in a race to the finish line... I lose! And Spring leaves victoriously Until the next race.

CARTOONGIRL 7. 1.

6.

1. The basic program I use to draw digitally is “Paint Tool SAI”. I also use Photoshop to edit images. I first sketched out the art I had in mind, and put the sketch in the sketch layer. 2. I lowered the opacity of the sketch layer and added a new layer named Line Art. This is where I drew a neater picture to color more efficiently on. 3. When I’m done with the Line Art layer, I put the opacity of the sketch layer to zero because I don’t use it anymore. 4. To avoid missing spots because of the white background, I fill a color on the layer called Background. That helps me identify if I missed a spot.

5.

Start here!

KidzEra is excited to feature Cartoongirl and her drawing Clear Blue. This is a great tutorial for anyone looking to start drawing digitally or to improve their skills!

2.

3.

4.

5. Then I start the extremely long coloring process. I start with the skin, then do the eyes, hair, inner clothing, then other items. I take time coloring the base colors of the specific part. It’s important to keep the coloring layers all separate. 6. After I color the base color of a certain part, I add another layer and clipping mask it. This helps me only color shades and wrinkles in the right place. 7. This is the finished colored piece. You can add a background to the art. In this piece, I used a texture I downloaded. Try out these techniques and upload your drawings to KidzEra.com!

King Simon Submitted by: Sofia A., Age 11, Hawaii Academy of Arts & Science, Pahoa, Hawaii

Once there was a land where there was no technology. This land was called Paperclip, and it was ruled by a king named Simon. This king was poor and sloppy and he was never orderly. Soon King Simon couldn’t feed or help his people anymore. He was going bankrupt. One day, after fighting to stay out of debt, an old green man came to his house and rang the doorbell. King Simon answered the door and gasped at how green he was. “Wow, you are really green. Are you an alien? Are you going to suck out my brains? Wait--can you read my mind? Quick! What am I thinking?” The green man blinked. “That’s so not why I’m here, King Simon. And you were thinking, How good would I look if I grew out my hair?” The King’s eyes widened. “How do you know my name? Wait. Everyone knows my name. I’m the King.” The old green man handed King Simon a cup of Top Ramen. “Now, if you plant this Top Ramen in your backyard, it will grow. If you use that Top Ramen that you grew and cook it, it will turn into gold and you and your people will never be hungry again. But there’s a catch: after you cook it, you have to set it down on your table for three hours and no one can look at it. If anything or anyone looks at it, it will rot.” At first, King Simon didn’t believe him, but he thought about it and remembered that you can always trust an alien. King Simon planted the Top Ramen and in time, it grew. After harvest, he cooked it and let it steep. Then he told his guards and everyone else not to look at it. After three hours, everyone looked at it and gasped at how much gold there was. After a few months of getting back on track, King Simon was so rich that he could buy the sun and sell it. He and his people were happy in the land of Paperclip, but not for long. One day, when everyone was trying not to look at the Top Ramen, a dragonfly went into the room and looked at the Top Ramen. One of the guards saw him and yelled, “Dragonfly! Get him!” Everyone tried to get him but the dragonfly was too fast, and it was too late anyway--the Top Ramen was already looked at. This same thing happened over and over again for years, and King Simon was once again poor and really needed a shave. Then the dragonfly got really sick and was about to die right there in front of King Simon. King Simon was so happy, he accidentally smooshed the dragonfly right there! Everyone came in and started partying!

The Secret Door Submitted by: Thomas H., Grade 5, Canadian Academy, Kobe, Japan

I was standing right in front of the place where I had briefly spotted a door the night before. Suddenly, a door started appearing out of thin air just as the clock chimed 12:00 a.m. Once the door looked solid, I carefully gripped the door handle and turned the knob. The moment I turned the handle, two things happened at the same time: I felt a rush of warm, humid air hit my face and I heard the ear-shattering roar of what I thought was some kind of dinosaur. I took a peek at what had made the noise. My heart skipped a beat as I realized I was looking into a whole new world. I was inside a vast canyon with sharp rock formations sticking out of the high ridges that reached the top of the canyon. The ground was covered with brick-red sand and brown, dusty rocks that made the place feel as if no life could survive there. Then I saw what the noise had come from: a huge and muscular dinosaur was fighting an even larger, fire-breathing dragon! I stepped on the rocky surface and started walking toward the fiercely battling creatures. After walking for about 20 seconds, I realized it was a mistake to walk this far. The dinosaur had overpowered the dragon, which was now lying on the ground, exhausted and mortally wounded. The dinosaur, on the other hand, only had minor injuries and burn marks. And it had just realized I was there. The dinosaur started charging at me. I did the only thing I could do: RUN. I ran as fast as I possibly could at the door that had brought me here, which was unfortunately starting to fade away. I could hear the massive feet stomping closer and closer with each step. The door was fading faster now and I didn’t think I was going to make it. Just as the door looked transparent, I put out a sudden burst of speed. I leapt at the place where I hoped the door still existed and landed hard on what wasn’t sandy rock, but smooth carpet. I looked back in the place where the door once stood. There was now nothing there but wall. The clock now read 12:01 a.m. 21

inkslinger A Close Getaway Story submitted by: John C.

Drip. Drip. It was a rainy day in Groton Long Point, Connecticut. It was a miserable day in July and my cousins and I were bored out of our minds. An average day in Groton Long Point was swimming, biking and playing football. This, however, was not an average day. So we sat on the front porch for about an hour doing nothing but staring into space. Then, my cousin Tim suggested we do something. “How about dares?” my cousin Jack asked. We all nodded and thought since we have nothing better to do we might as well. How much trouble could we get in?

Tropical Island submitted by: Aasheen M., Age 10, The International School of Penang, Penang, Malaysia Sea Creatures submitted by: Ana V., Age 12, Palms Middle School, Los Angeles, California Shark submitted by: Nikolas D., Age 12, Lincoln School, Cicero, Illinois

Since there were a lot of cousins on my dad‘s side, we always used the rule that whoever is the youngest must do whatever the older kids want them to. Forgetting I was the youngest, I agreed to the plan. So of course the two of them looked at me to go first. I chose my cousin Tim to pick a dare for me since I knew Jack would dare something that could probably either really hurt me or get me into major trouble. All Tim dared me to do was jump five steps. I easily did it and, with little satisfaction, I sat back down on the steps. We went through about three rounds of this until we realized that this was not fun at all. Then it was Jack’s turn to give me his dare. I could tell that he wanted to add some excitement to this game, so he started looking around. “Let’s go to the beach,” he said. When we got there we saw the waves crashing and noticed the kayak being pulled and pushed by the water. Jack quickly put a smile on and looked at me. Oh, come on, of course it has to be me. He looked at me and happily told me the dare. He wanted me to take the kayak to the nearby island. I looked at him in shock. “Ok,” I exclaimed. “But only if you come with me.” I saw my cousin Tim happily sitting on the stairs, relieved he was not a part of this. Without hesitation, Jack started walking to the beach. As we dragged the kayak out from behind the pier I could hear a voice inside me saying, “Is this a good idea??” I didn’t have time to answer that voice because we quickly hopped in the kayak. We balanced ourselves and began paddling out to sea. You could tell there had been a tropical storm because there were bright blue jellyfish and big fish swimming. Just then I got a little scared, and wished it had been Tim and Jack that had gotten into this situation. I was in the front of the kayak so of course I was the one that had to deal with all the water, jellyfish, and fish coming into the boat. As I squirmed from almost getting a jellyfish in my pants, I read a sign: “ Beware of jellyfish, you are now entering the ocean.” It was weird, because I had never seen that sign before. That’s because I never did anything like this before!! I stared at it for a couple of minutes, when all of a sudden I heard Jack yell, “Look out! What are you doing?” I looked in front and almost started choking. There was a huge sharklike creature gnawing at the side of my oar. I took Jack’s oar and started belting it on the head until it let go of my oar. Breathing heavily, I looked back at Jack and for the first time, I actually saw him scared. 24

Share youR STORIEs!

We kept going even though we were scared to death. I had never seen anything like this in my life. I wondered what kind of a storm had hit that made all these strange sea animals appear. We continued rowing and things seemed to calm down. Actually, things were too calm. Usually there were sailboats, cruise ships, ferries and other kayakers out at sea. But now there were no boaters as far as the eye could see. I could tell that today was going to be a different kind of day. I was hoping everything was back to normal and we could turn around and get back to land, but I knew things weren’t because there was an eerie calm in the air. All of the sudden thousands of jellyfish swarmed our kayak. I was worried and looked back at Jack. He yelled, “Just paddle as fast as you can!” I quickly picked my oar off from my lap and started paddling. There were so many jellyfish that it was nearly impossible to paddle. The only thing we were doing was making things worse. As we paddled, jellyfish stingers flung up into the kayak. I could feel the itchiness from the jellyfish stings and all the paddling was just making me tired. Just when I felt like giving up, the strangest thing happened: the jellyfish separated into two groups on either side of the kayak, creating a path for us to go through. We started to paddle, but then was interrupted with a loud BOOM from under our boat. I looked around and saw nothing. But then a huge fin came from underneath the kayak and started circling us. I thought it was just some fish that was curious about us, but of course I thought wrong. The huge beast lifted up from underwater showing us its huge teeth and big body. “SHARK!” I yelled as we tried to paddle away. The beast came at us like a torpedo. It went under, around, everything you can imagine before actually making contact with us once again. It gave us such a big hit that the kayak sailed through the water about the length of a football field before coming to a complete stop. I turned around to make sure Jack was all right. I could tell that he was in lots of pain, but he kept trying to paddle. As we saw the creature coming from behind, we realized that the island was only 300 yards away. We knew we could not beat the shark in a race, but what we did know is that we could use the shark to help us get to the island. We lined up with the shark and paddled forward. It came up from the water and hit right in the middle of the boat sending us flying into the air. As we lifted off we looked around in amazement, seeing all of the other dream-like figures in the water. About a mile down to the right, I could see lots of oversized dolphins playing in the water. Another mile down to the left I could see huge froglike creatures hopping on the water. We were in the air so long I almost forgot what was happening until CRASH—we smacked into the sand. We were so glad that we were finally on land. Then we saw what was on the land waiting for us. Jack and I fainted. “Wake up. Wake up!!” I heard as I slowly was awakened by two figures jumping on me. “What were you guys dreaming about?” I heard my little cousin Carrie ask. As we began to tell her, Jack, Tim and I both looked at each other in disbelief. “So we all had the same dream?” I asked. “That’s weird,” we all said, half amazed and half joking. “Dare, anyone?” 25
