The idea for this T-design popped in my head in the middle of a band rehearsal. I was thinking about how it would be awesome to have a monkey in our school marching band and, voila! The design was born. A cool T-shirt is one that is expressive and shows off its own personality. I want to tell KidzEra readers that no matter how rocky the road seems, or how high the stars are, they have to keep reaching for their dreams because they’re the only ones who can.

Bermuda Triangle map courtesy of wikipedia.org
It’s just an innocent patch of ocean....or IS IT?!
A few people were killed and some were injured from the impact. It was very loud and disturbing; all of Miami could probably hear it. I would be so scared! The clues show evidence that the crash could have been caused by lightning, but that’s not confirmed. Then the wreckage went to the sea, and some of it was found months later. There were very few remains.
Incident in 1991 One of the biggest mysterious disappearances in the Bermuda Triangle was in 1991, also involving an airplane. It was a Halloween night, with the sea looking clear as can be. The sky was clear as well. Up in an airplane at 25,300 feet was pilot John Verdi. He was flying a cougar jet. The way this story is going, nothing good will happen. Since 25,300 feet was not very safe, he requested an altitude gain. In a crackled voice, he said, “Requesting to gain altitude, over.” The patrol agreed and he cruised to an altitude of about 29,000 feet in the air. John was now flying in the middle of the triangle, unaware of what was about to happen. He was being tracked from the station until—poof. A mysterious flash took the black color of the sky, on the radar. The dot that was the plane faded away—nothing was on the radar! The patrol sent a mayday call, but the airplane did not answer any calls. The airplane had vanished, adding to the mystery of the Bermuda Triangle. Does one of the theories explain this? What do you think happened? The Bermuda Triangle is one of the scariest mysteries ever. Experts agree that someday they will solve the problem and take away the guessing. Hopefully they do it before there is another victim to the triangle!

KidzEra is proud to feature the artist Yxrulz! Yxrulz has won T-Design and been highly ranked in Top Artist. We interviewed her about her creative process and she made a step-by-step illustration sequence of her piece Butterfly-Peace, Love and Hope to share with KidzEra artists and readers.

4.
I began drawing the basic idea that I had in mind on my little notepad.
2.
Next, I transferred what I drew on the notepad to a blank sheet of paper.
I used colored pencils to fill in the outline. I color hard because I love bold colors that invigorate and give a cheery atmosphere.
5.
3.
Then I added the Peace, Love, Hope at the bottom. I also added frills on the side of the butterfly and inner shapes on the wings.
Last, I outlined the butterfly using a marker because I wanted it to stand out. Then I erased some unnecessary marks—done!!

History
WORLD WAR T
BATTLES ON THE EASTERN FRON
The Battle of Moscow World War II started in 1939, when Nazi Germany attacked Poland. But the main war on the eastern front began in 1941. Hitler thought that taking over Moscow would be relatively easy because shortly after the invasion of Russia started, the Germans took over two pretty big cities, Kiev and Minsk. After taking over those cities, the Germans went for Moscow. Most of the Russian army was protecting Moscow, not only because it was the heart of the Russia, but also because if they lost Moscow, it would mean the Germans would win and would take over Europe. The Russian army marched across Moscow to show that they were ready to defend the city. The six main roads to Moscow were full of grenades underground. The Russian army dug trenches, so that when the German tanks drove past the trench, a Russian soldier could jump out and throw a bomb at the German tank. The Germans attacked, but the Russian army was ready with a huge counterattack, and the Germans had to retreat. It was Germany’s first loss in World War II. The Battle of St. Petersburg After the battle for Moscow, the Russians were ready to free St. Petersburg. The German army circled the city. The
Russian army managed to break through the circle, but the Germans trapped them in there and bombed them until they gave up. The Russian army sent their full strength to free St. Petersburg. A week or two later they completely broke the German circle, and made them retreat. St. Petersburg was surrounded for 885 days by German forces and a great number of people died. The Battle of Stalingrad In the spring of 1943, the Germans tried to surround Stalingrad just like St. Petersburg, but this time they failed. On the very first day of the battle, the Germans bombed the city. Forty-thousand people died that day. In every building there was a big battle, even on every floor. That caused a big hamburger, because the Russians would have the top and bottom floor, with the Germans trapped in between. The German army was struggling. In 38 days, the Germans had taken over Paris, but in Russia, they only moved from one side of the street to the other—in 38 days! Then the Russians brought in their rocket launchers, known as Katyushas. The main forces of the German army were surrounded, and the Russians bombed them until they retreated.

which was the military defeat of Nazi Germany.
In the summer of 1943, the battle outside a town called Kursk occurred. It was the biggest aerial battle in history. The Russians suffered huge losses, but they didn’t give up. The Germans were furious—they even used their air force, but still the Russians didn’t give up. The Russian air force, along with the Katyushas, made the Germans retreat 24 miles to a city called Kharkov.
The Russian army was very important in bringing about the end of World War II. Every year, on May 9th, the modern Russian army walks across Moscow in honor of the soldiers who fought in World War II. Article submitted by: Artur A., Age 10, Denver Jewish Day School, Denver, Colorado
Final Eastern Battles Next, the Russians wanted to free Kiev and Minsk. The Russians gathered a really mighty army, including those who protected Moscow, St. Petersburg and Stalingrad, and Kiev and Minsk were freed after only a few days of fighting. The War Ends in Mainland Europe The Russians decided that they needed to take Poland back from German control. It was a two-day march to Poland and the battles fought in and around the Polish territory caused many people on all sides to die. The Russians then went into Germany and met the American troops, who had also stormed into Germany. The Russian forces captured the German parliament building in Berlin, called the Reichstag,

I used DeviantArt Muro and started with a sketch of one of the main characters in the story.
4.
I outlined the whole figure in black, including the blindfold.
2.
5.
Second, I used a different color to draw the blindfold, so that it would be easier to outline later.
Next, I did an underlayer of color in a lighter shade of red.
3.
6.
Then I added the Japanese word akumu, which means nightmare, to the side of the drawing.
I added detail to the hair, blindfold and skin. Last, I did the background.

Winter is amazing! There are so many fun things to do. Where I live, winter is really fun. First, I wake up to see if it is snowing outside. My mom makes me cookies shaped like snowflakes. They are so delicious!
When we get home, we start a snowball fight. We make forts and battle each other. After we are tired of playing, our mom makes hot chocolate with marshmallows. We go outside again to build snow figures. I decorate my snowman with buttons, a carrot, tree branches and grapes for the eyes. At the end of the day, we go back inside when it is dark outside. Our mom cooks us a hot dinner and we start watching a movie. All of us fall asleep in the middle of the movie, dreaming of having another fun snowy day.
Snowmen - A History Story submitted by: Christopher S., Age 11, Our Lady of Grace School, Fairview, New Jersey
Snowmen are very popular snow sculptures. A snowman consists of three snowballs. They are stacked from bottom, largest to smallest. A traditional snowman has two arms made of twigs. They also have eyes, a mouth made of coal, a hat, a scarf and a carrot nose.
Snowman art submitted by: Serena D., Age 9, Ardmore Elementary School, Bellevue, Washington
Then, I put on a lot of clothes so I can stay warm and not get sick. I go outside with my brothers and we go to the park that has lots of hills. Each of us has a snowboard so we can enjoy the snow more. My mom watches us freestyling in the air with our snowboards and she tells us which tricks were the best. If we fall, she encourages us to try harder.
recorded, but many people believe it was created in Eau Claire, Wisconsin on January 7th, 1809. They believe it was created by Mr. Vernon N. Paul. He told his 9-year-old daughter it was to scare away the Boxing Day Elves. His neighbors saw it and his daughter explained how easy it was to sculpt. The idea spread and became very popular.
It was composed in the 1950s. The purpose of it was to make a seasonal hit like “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer”. Since then, many bands and musicians have covered the song, including the Jackson 5 and Alvin and the Chipmunks.

“Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!” Ava’s mom sang her way into the living room. Oh, please let it snow tonight. It will be my first time seeing snow around the holidays, make that ever! Please, please let it snow, Ava begged inside her head, knowing very well that it wasn’t going to snow in Florida. Her mom placed a tray of cookies down on the table. Gingerbread cookies were Ava’s favorites and her mom made them at least 10 times during the holidays. They were delicious, soft and chewy, with little gumdrops. Ava absolutely loved them. “Thanks, Mom!” Ava said between mouthfuls. Her mom snatched a cookie with a grin and started singing back into the kitchen. Ava finished her last cookie and reached for her favorite snow globe. It was a world of snow: snowmen, snowflakes and snow forts. Everything Ava wanted at home was in there. Ava cranked the gold knob. Music began playing. She shook the glass up and down until snow started to fall. Ava dozed off to sleep...
Pushing off of the fire truck-red sled, Ava stood up and took her lavendercolored wool gloves off and shook the snow off. When all the snow was clear, Ava put them back on her almost frozen fingers.

I’m really cold, let’s go inside!” Ava shouted to her friends. Lindsey responded, “Yeah, I’m freezing! How about some hot chocolate when we get inside?”
The other girls nodded their red cheeks, agreeing with both of the suggestions. They went inside to warm up. Leaving a snow trail from the front door, the five girls stomped through the house to the kitchen. They took off their “One, two, three, and push!” Ava went outdoor gear: snow pants, coats, gloves, flying on the sled. She zoomed down hats and scarves. The two forts they used for a snowball fight were still standing, covered in even more snow. Snowflakes drizzled down from the sky, landing on her rosy cheeks. Nearing the bottom of the hill, Ava stuck out her tongue, hoping for a little white flake to melt on it.
Ava was tired from a long day outside and she needed her beauty sleep. Yawning, Ava plopped down on the couch. Slowly, her eyelids fell. She took deep breaths. Concentrating on nothing but her breathing, Ava drifted off into dreamland. She let out a quiet snore. She was definitely asleep.

Note from the artist: This is a fun activity that you can do with your family, friends or even in school. It is fun for everyone! I almost forgot one very important thing: have fun and spend time with your family. Also, be sure to use a clean work area and protect surfaces with a table cloth!!
»»1 or 2 pinecones, any size »»Any color paint you want »»Decorations: glitter glue, colored puffballs, sequins, beads, pipecleaners, thread »»Tablecloth »»String (any color) and an ornament hook »»Optional: chocolate squares
1. Pick your pinecone, paint and paintbrush. Start painting it whatever color you want (we used green, so it would look like a tree). Let it dry.
2. While the paint dried, we tied sequins on thread to make ‘lights’.
3. After the paint has dried, string your ‘lights’ around the pinecone. Careful! Sometimes they get really tangled!
