The potato is a starchy vegetable and the world’s fourth largest food crop after maize, wheat and rice.

The word potato comes from the Spanish word ‘patata’.

China is the top potato producing country, followed by India.

24

It is a staple food in many parts of the world and an important part of the world’s diet.

August 2021

Potatoes are relatively easy to grow although do not store particularly well after purchase.

Potatoes are full of carbohydrates but also contain a variety of vitamins and minerals.

They are particularly popular for chips/ French fries but frying makes them unhealthy. On the other hand, one 8 ounce baked or boiled potato has only 100 calories.

There are thousands of different potato varieties. The most popular include Russet, Desiree and Fingerling.

They are a root crop, which means the vegetable grows under the soil. The green tops of a potato plant are poisonous and toxic.

There are many different ways to cook and serve potatoes. They can be boiled, baked, mashed, roasted or fried.

www.kidzine.net

25

The slang term for a potato is ‘spud’.

Potatoes are also used to make crisps – one of the most common snack foods in the world. The largest potato ever grown weighed over 8 pounds.

26

The average American eats about 124 pounds of potatoes every year. Germans eat twice as much!

In October 1995, the potato became the first vegetable to be grown in space!

A potato is actually 80% water and 20% solids.

Potatoes were the main crop in Ireland for many years. Adverse weather conditions resulted in the ‘Great Potato Famine’ in the 1840s and 1850s. Almost a million people died from starvation during this time.

It is Inca tradition to place raw slices of potato on broken bones to help healing.

Mask Wearing Though kids may love wearing masks at Halloween, wearing a mask all throughout the day may not feel like fun. To get your child used to mask wearing and mask care habits, model mask wearing and care, let them practice at home and praise your child when they get it right.

Mask Recommendations: Masks should include multiple layers of fabric and allow the child to breathe freely. 30

Each child should have their own set of cloth masks. We recommend that your child wears a freshly-washed mask to school each day, and carries at last one or two clean back-up masks. Kids will probably need several masks a day. Once a mask is wet or dirty it's no longer considered effective. To store masks, each child should carry two clean bags or containers that allow for air flow: one for their clean back up masks, and one for their used masks. Be sure to label the bags or containers so they know which is which.

August 2021

Masks should completely cover the child's nose and mouth and extend down to the chin. Masks should be washed and dried thoroughly before they're used again Choose masks that can be washed and dried without losing their shape. Masks should be permanently labeled with your child's name to avoid mask mix ups. Kids may be more open to wearing masks they choose themselves. Make sure the mask fits well. For kids who find masks with ear loops uncomfortable, provide them with masks that can be secured with ties. If your child wears glasses, a mask may cause the glasses to fog. Using small pieces of gentle surgical tape across the top of the mask can help to prevent this. A mask doesn't work if it's not worn properly. Explain to your child why it's important to wear a mask and show your child the right way to wear one. Remind kids to never touch other children's or adults' masks. Encourage them not to touch the front of their own masks, but if they do, to wash or sanitize their hands right away. www.kidzine.net

Hi Kids! Hope you enjoyed my lesson last month and took lots of photos. This month I will teach you the next lesson which is about the background of your photos. 2. Check your Backgrounds A very simple concept that can enhance an image is to check out the background of a shot to check for clutter or distraction.

36

Remember always to scan the background (and the foreground) of an image quickly and to change your frame if there's too many distractions - otherwise your shots will end up like mine used to with all kinds of objects growing out of the heads of those I was photographing. So, try to use clear backgrounds for your photos. I hope you will try this simple concept and take some good photos.

A male goat is called a ‘Billy’ or a ‘Buck’. A female is called a ‘Nanny’ or a ‘Doe’.

August 2021

Goats were one of the first animals to be tamed by humans. They can recognise their name and come when called.

They were first herded around 9,000 years ago. They prefer to stay in herds as they get lonely and depressed if kept alone.

In addition to being called a herd, the collective name for a group of goats can also be a trip or tribe.

Goats have very sensitive lips. They use them to search for clean and tasty food, often rejecting hay that is dirty.

39

Originally mountain animals, they are very good at climbing. They can also jump very high – up to 12 feet in a single jump!

Goats have four stomachs! The food they consume moves into the rumen, to the reticulum, then to the omasum and finally, to the abamasum.

There are over 300 distinct breeds of goat.

Their pupils are rectangular. This gives them excellent vision around them without having to move. They also have very good night vision.

They are closely related to sheep although most goats have a beard and straight horns (even females). Unlike sheep, goats do not need shearing.

Each kid has a unique call (bleat) and scent. The mother will recognise her kid by its call and scent (not by sight).

www.kidzine.net

The gestation period of a goat is five months. On average, goats give birth to 2.2 kids (babies) each year. They are able to breed at any time of the year. Goat kids learn to stand within minutes of being born.

40

1. What three words are used to describe a group of goats? 2. What is a female goat called? 3. What is the fleshy thing on their neck called? 4. Goats have poor eyesight – true or false? 5. What is the term for the call of a goat? 6. How many stomachs does a goat have? 7. What can goats often be heard doing? 8. What is the main predator of the domestic goat? 9. In addition to edible items, what are goats used for? 10. Do goats need to be sheared? July 2021 August 2021

The domestic dog is actually the main predator of domestic goats in many countries.

Goat meat is the most consumed meat per capita worldwide!

The average lifespan of a goat is between 15 and 18 years.

Some goat kids are born with fleshy, dangly things on their neck. These are called wattles (or bells or skin tags).

Each kid has a unique call (bleat) and scent. The mother will recognise her kid by its call and scent (not by sight).

They are also widely used for milk, cheese, mohair and cashmere.

Wolves and cougars are the two main predators of mountain goats but Grizzly bears have also been known to attack them.

They are known to burp and can frequently be heard doing so!

Golden eagles sometimes knock baby mountain goats from mountain ledges and then eat the injured/dead animals.

A male goat is called a ‘Billy’ or a ‘Buck’. A female is called a ‘Nanny’ or a ‘Doe’.

John Baird Inventor of the Television John Baird was born on August 13th 1888 in Helensburgh, Dunbarton, Scotland. He took a course in electrical engineering at the Glasgow and West of Scotland Technical College (now called Strathclyde University) and studied towards his Bachelor of Science Degree in electrical engineering from the University of Glasgow; although his studies were disrupted by the outbreak of World War 1.

42

During the 1920s John Baird, together with an American named Clarence W. Hansell, patented the idea of using arrays of transparent rods to transmit images for television. Baird's 30 line images were the first demonstrations of television by reflected light rather than back-lit silhouettes. He based his technology initially on a scanning disk idea and then later, on developments in electronics.

He created the first televised pictures of objects in motion in 1924 and the first televised human face in 1925. A year later, in 1926, he televised the first moving object image at the Royal Institution in London.

His 1928 transatlantic transmission of the image of a human face was a broadcasting milestone. August 2021

Baird also demonstrated colour television, stereoscopic television and television by infra-red light, all before 1930.

He successfully lobbied for broadcast time with the British Broadcasting Company (BBC) who began broadcasting television on the Baird 30-line system in 1929.

In 1936, the BBC adopted television service using the electronic television technology of MarconiEMI (the world's first regular high resolution service - 405 lines per picture). It was that technology that eventually took over from Baird's innovative system.

John Baird died on June 14th 1946 in Bexhill-onSea, Sussex, England but the television pioneer will always be remembered for his invention of the mechanical television system. www.kidzine.net

ENERGY IS ALL AROUND US Humans have always depended on energy for many things. From basic survival, such as cooking food, to the luxuries of television and video games, energy is an important part of our daily lives. Before electricity, humans had to rely on the other sources of energy found in nature to complete tasks.

ACTIVITY Look at the pictures below and label what form of energy is being used.

DIFFERENT FORMS OF ENERGY Energy comes in different forms, and each can be changed into another form.

HERE ARE SIX DIFFERENT FORMS OF ENERGY

THERMAL

CHEMICAL

ENERGY

ENERGY

is the energy stored within bonds between molecules. There are many sources for this energy, such as natural gas, gasoline and coal.

(or heat energy) is the energy of moving molecules. The energy that comes from a fire is thermal energy.

MECHANICAL ENERGY

is the energy stored in objects by tension. When the tension is released, motion occurs. A spring that is pressed down has mechanical energy.

63

RADIANT

ELECTRICAL

NUCLEAR

(or light energy) is related to the movement of light. The Sun provides radiant energy to warm our planet.

is energy that comes from tiny charged particles called electrons. In nature, lightning is one form of electrical energy.

is the energy created when the nuclei of atoms are split or fused. This type of energy is produced in nuclear power plants.
