Why Does Matter Matter?
What do trees, air, and water have in common? They all have matter. That means they take up space. You might be wondering why these things look so different if they all have matter. Everything found on Earth can be grouped into one of three states of matter: solid, liquid, or gas. In order to figure out which state of matter an object fits in, we have to examine its properties. The properties we look at are shape, mass, and volume. Mass is the amount of matter an object has, and volume is the amount of space the matter takes up. 14
Solids are easy to recognize. They have definite shape, mass, and volume. Trees are solids. They are made up of tiny particles called atoms. These atoms are packed closely together, and they hold the solid in a definite shape that does not change. If you look around your house, you will see lots of solids. Televisions, beds, tables, chairs, and even the food you eat. Liquids do not have definite shape, but they do have definite mass and volume. Liquids are similar to solids because their atoms are close together, but what makes a liquid different is that those atoms can move around. Liquids can change shape by flowing. If you've ever spilled a glass of milk, then you know it spreads out across the floor. It does this because the milk is taking the shape of the floor. Since liquids do not have a definite shape of their own, they will take the shape of their containers. This is why the same amount of milk can look different in a tall glass, a wide mug, or spread out on your kitchen floor. July 2021 2021 November
Gases do not have definite shape or volume. Like liquids, gasses will take the shape of their containers. If a gas is not in a container, it will spread out indefinitely. This is because the atoms in a gas are spaced farther apart than in a solid or a liquid. And being spread out like this allows them to move around freely. Think about the air you breathe everyday. That air is spread across the empty space around the earth. You've probably also noticed that you usually cannot see the air. This is another property of gases. Even though we cannot see them, you come in contact with them everyday. There's air in the tires of your family car and your bicycle. There are many different types of gas in the earth's atmosphere, such as oxygen, carbon dioxide, nitrogen, water vapor, and helium. When trying to remember the three states of matter, think about water. If it freezes into a solid, it becomes ice. Its atoms are packed together keeping its shape. Of course, we know water can also be a liquid. It flows in rivers or it can be poured from a glass. When water evaporates it becomes water vapor, a type of gas in the air. Try a little experiment of your own by placing an ice cube in a covered glass or container. You will be able to observe the ice first in its solid form and then watch as it melts into a liquid to become water. Eventually the water will turn to water vapor and your glass or container will be filled with this gas.

Banana Benefits and Facts
Bananas are the most popular fruit in the world - we eat more bananas than apples and oranges put together! They are actually a human invention from 5000 BC. They were originally full of seeds but because people are picky eaters, banana hybrids were created, making them seedfree. There are still tiny seeds in bananas but they serve no function in banana reproduction. 24
November 2021
The stringy things you see when you peel a banana are called ‘phloem’ (pronounced FLOM). Bananas are mentioned in literature as far back as the 6th century BC. If you peel a banana from the bottom up, you won’t get any phloem! The scientific name for a banana is ‘musa sapientum’ which means ‘fruit of the wise men’. Contrary to popular belief, it’s almost impossible to get fat on bananas. They give you energy not fat!
Bananas contain 15% of your daily recommended Vitamin C. This helps your body heal so they are good to eat when you are feeling under the weather.
Bananas are also easy to digest. Pureed banana is an ideal solid food for babies. 25
The word banana comes from the Arab word ‘banan’ which means ‘finger’.
An individual banana is called a finger and a bunch of bananas is called a hand. It is said that the natural substances in bananas have a calming effect on the brain and can act as a gentle sedative. The Vitamin B6 also regulates blood glucose levels and can have a positive effect on your mood. www.kidzine.net
India is the biggest banana producer in the world, followed by Brazil. They thrive in tropical climates like the Caribbean.
Herbaceous means there is no woody stem and all the plant matter above the ground dies at the end of a yearly cycle.
The banana flower is also edible. It’s a large pinkish blossom and is used extensively in Asia as a vegetable. It can be eaten raw in salads, or added to soups or curries. The flavour is similar to that of an artichoke.
Banana ‘trees’ are the world’s tallest herbaceous plant. They can reach up to 20 feet high with leaves up to 9 feet long!
Each stem of a banana plant develops 7 to 14 hands of bananas.
It’s incredibly difficult to extract juice from bananas. Have you ever tried squeezing one? Any banana juice you may find will be blended banana and not squeezed banana!
26
Bananas are extremely versatile and can be used in everything from yogurts, milkshakes and ice-cream to salads, curries and kebabs!
The popular Cavendish banana is also at risk. It would only take one aggressive bug or disease to wipe out the entire banana population!
The type of banana you see in the supermarket is called a Cavendish banana. The original, preferred variety was the Gros Michel banana but this became extinct by 1960 thanks to Panama disease. November 2021
Here are some of the bananas you might find at the supermarket: Cavendish These are long (20-25cm) and thin (4-5cm) and their skin is yellow and are the most commonly sold banana. Lady Finger These are sweet bananas - you’ll like them. They have bright yellow skin and creamy coloured flesh. They are shorter than Cavendish bananas (about 15cm) and a little fatter! Gold Finger These are a new variety. They are larger than Lady Finger bananas with rounded ends and a distinctive, tangy taste. They are great in fruit salads because they don’t go brown when we’re cut. Red or Red Daccas These are also new kids on the block and people say they have attitude because they are red. They are similar to the yellow-skinned bananas except that the skin is red and have a very sweet red/pink flesh. They are a great dessert-type banana. Plantains These are sold green and used as a vegetable and are usually much longer and fatter than the desserttype bananas such as Cavendish, Lady Finger, Gold Finger and Red Dacca. They have a thick green skin and starchy flesh and are generally used in Asian cooking.

HEADACHES
Headaches in children are common and usually aren't serious. You may have pain at one or both sides of your head, or at the back of your head and down into your neck, or across your forehead, or a feeling like a tight band squeezing around your head.
What causes headaches 32
Headaches can be caused by: lcertain medications (headaches are a potential side effect of some) ltoo little sleep or sudden changes in sleep patterns lfever, like when you have a cold or are 'sickening' for some illness lbeing in the sun too long and not drinking enough water when it is hot linfections around the head, like in
the ears, nose, and throat lhead injuries from a bump or accident lsitting watching a computer too long lmigraine leye problems lstress (playing online games can stress people out. Your muscles get tense, especially in your neck and shoulders). lnoise - it doesn't have to be loud rock music - it could be a noisy classroom or household, or a noisy factory nearby. lsmelling strong odors such as perfume, smoke, fumes, or a new car or carpet November 2021
In some cases, headaches are caused by certain infections, such as: ear infections viral infections, like the flu or common cold strep throat sinus infections Lyme disease

Head injuries
Getting a bump on the head can give you a headache. If someone is hit hard enough to be unconscious, even for a few seconds, then that person has been concussed. Always tell an adult if you bump your head.

Vision problems
Not being able to see well can cause headaches. If you can't see the blackboard well, if writing looks blurred, if you can see things close up but not further away, then your eyes have to work really hard and this can give you a headache. Some people get a headache in bright light or sunlight.

Stress
If you are feeling really worried about something, you can sometimes get a headache. If you are so worried that you are not sleeping well, then it is a good idea to have a talk with one of your trusted adults and see if you can fix the problem.

What you can do
If you have a headache, it's a good idea to find somewhere quiet to rest if you can. l
Drinking cool water, putting a cool wet cloth on your head and closing your eyes works well for some headaches, including those caused by migraine, fever, sickness, or too much sun, stress or worry. l
Do some relaxation exercises to help your muscles relax. An easy one is to start with your toes then work your way up the body, tensing and relaxing all your muscles in turn. At the same time, make your breathing slow and deep so that you are thinking about that rather than the pain or worry. l

The Mysterious Mathematician. Ask anyone taking geometry and usually the first thing they learn about is something called the Pythagorean Theorem. It is a theorem in geometry which states that in a right triangle the area of the square on the hypotenuse (side opposite right angle) is equal to the sum of the areas of the squares of the two sides, or perhaps simpler as a2+b2=c2. What is really amazing is how this theorem bears his name when most works written about him didn't exist until years after his death. Quite mysterious! Of the fragments of information about Pythagoras, we know he was well travelled and studied multiple fields. He learned geometry form the Egyptians, arithmetic form the Phoenicians, and astronomy from the Chaldeans. Pythagoras was quite taken by shapes and also by music. According to legend, Pythagoras was walking by some blacksmiths one day and heard the sounds of their hammers and thought how beautiful the sounds were. He deduced that these sounds must be caused by some scientific law that should be easy to represent mathematically. His followers were called the Pythagoreans and were quite mysterious as well. The Pythagoreans were split into two groups; mathematikoi (teachers) and akousmatikoi (listeners). In their school the first concept of paying for education was created. Up until this point in history, education had largely been free. When your parents have to make a tuition payment for your school, tell them they can thank Pythagoras! November 2021

Margaret Knight A Lady with Bags of Ideas! Margaret Knight was born in Maine, USA in 1938 and was raised by her widowed mother. As a child, she was known as “Mattie”. Unlike most little girls, she never played with dolls. Instead, she would make toys for her brothers.
48
In 1849, Margaret went to work in a cotton mill. There was a device at the mill called a “shuttle” which carried thread back and forth across a textile loom. One day, the thread broke and the shuttle flew off, striking a young boy and killing him. Margaret was very upset and set about designing a safety mechanism making it impossible for the shuttle to leave the loom. The device was successful and before long, every new machine was fitted with one. This undoubtedly saved many lives but because Margaret was so young, she never thought about patenting the device. As a result, she was never credited for her invention. She would not make the same mistake twice. Later in life, she invented a machine that could make flat-bottomed paper bags. She started by building a miniature wooden prototype in her home. However, to be able to cope with mass production, the machine needed to be made of metal. She asked a man named Charles Annan to help her build a full size metal machine. Unfortunately, he then claimed the design as his own! Charles Annan argued that no woman would be clever enough to design such a machine and that the invention was November 2021
obviously his. However, during the court case, Margaret took her wooden prototype to court and explained in detail how every gear and lever worked. This was enough to convince the court that it was in fact Margaret who had designed the machine, and not Charles Annan. Knight's machine automatically folded and glued the bottom of paper bags. She won the case in 1871 and was awarded with the patent. She was the second woman in history to hold a US patent. Over 100 years later, he design is still being used to make flat-bottomed paper bags!
In total, Margaret Knight was credited with around 90 inventions and received 26 patents. These included a rotary engine, a shoe cutting machine and a waterproof skirt protector. When she died, Margaret was described as a "female Edison” after the famous inventor who invented the electric light bulb. 1.What was Margaret Knight's nick-name? 2.Where did she work in 1849? 3.What was the name of the man who tried to steal her invention? 4.How was Margaret described after she died? 5.How many patents did she receive in total? 6.Name another of her inventions. 7.Was Margaret the first woman in history to hold a US patent? 8.What did she take to court to help win her case? 9.What was the item called that inspired her to invent a safety device? 10.In what year did she receive her first patent? www.kidzine.net

The official symbol of Madrid is the bear. It stands on its hind legs eating berries from the madro'o tree. It symbolizes the city's growth and represents the possession and ownership of the wood necessary for the construction of buildings. It is known as 'El Oso y El Madrono' which means 'the bear and the strawberry tree'.
The well known 'Flamenco' dance originated in Madrid. However, Flamenco is more than just a dance; it is combination of guitar playing and singing as well as dancing. The Spanish National flag is called "la Rojigualda". It is a horizontal tri-colour of red, yellow and red, with the Spanish coat of arms offcentered in the double-width yellow band, towards the hoist. Legend says that the colours of the Spanish flag are based on the bullfight arena - the red representing the blood and the yellow the sand of the arena. www.kidzine.net

The Sea Anemone The sea anemone is closely related to the coral and the jellyfish. It looks a lot like a flower called the anemone, which is how it got its name. The animal's body has a plant-like appearance. It comes in a variety of colors, including red, blue, pink, and green. The sea anemone is an invertebrate, which means it has no skeleton. This sea animal attaches itself to rocks, the sea floor, coral, or other firm objects.
68
The sea anemone is a predatory animal that stings its prey with its tentacles. This paralyzes the victim, and the sea anemone then pushes the animal into the mouth. The sea anemone eats small fish, worms, mussels, and zooplankton. Very few animals eat the sea anemone. The great sea slug is one of its predators. The sea anemone can grow up to 10 inches wide. It has a long, hollow tube. It likes to live in dark places and in warm waters. The sea anemone has an interesting relationship with other sea animals. The hermit crab places the sea anemone on top of its shell to use it as camouflage. The clown fish lives amongst the sea anemone for protection. The clown fish is not affected by the sea anemone's stinging tentacles. For most fish, though, avoiding the sea anemone is the best option.
