Editor's View Words: Eve Kelliher

Kerry Thanks Colm Cooper For Making Dreams Come True AS THE applause rings out and he takes his rightful place in the pantheon of sport’s all-time greats, Colm Cooper has a truly enviable trophy haul to represent his extraordinary career – nine Munster championships wins, four All-Ireland medals, four National Leagues and eight All-Star awards. There was sadness among many as the Kerry legend announced his retirement from intercounty football after glittering seasons in the sun, played out in glorious Technicolor over the past 17 years. In an emotional statement, he said: “It is very rare for people to achieve their ultimate dreams in life – I just have.”

But Colm in turn made dreams come true for sports fans of every code as he worked his magic as one of the best footballers of all time. In all he played 85 Championship games for Kerry, scoring 23-283 in the process and along the way he won every honour available to him. Exuding class on and off the pitch, he has endeared himself to the GAA community and beyond. The team at Killarney Advertiser sends Colm Cooper every good wish in the future. See our tribute feature on pages 2831.

Well Done To Munster Champions 2017 WHAT a superb achievement by the Glenflesk Community Games Boys under-13 Futsal team of Callum Cronin, Luke Crowley, Gearoid Healy, Eoghan Kelly, Evan Lucey, Dara O’Connell, Ignatius O’Leary and Captain Ben Switzer who won the Munster finals in Limerick. They got the better of Beara from Cork in the preliminary round and Newport from Tipperary in the semi-final to qualify for the final against Caherdavin from Limerick. The final was a tight high quality game but the boys showed their trademark skill and determination to emerge winners on a 6-3 scoreline. The team paid tribute to mentors Donal Kelly and James Furlong and to the parents and supporters who travelled to Limerick today to support the team. The boys now compete in the Community Games National Finals on May 6 in Dublin.

Online Internet Fraud - Part 2

Welcome this edition of TechTalk. Every few weeks, we will present a facet of technology. If you have any items you’d like to read about, feel free to email: chris@teachtech. support with suggestions. This week is Part 2 of 2 looking at Online Internet Fraud. Following on from last week - we’re finishing this article with how to avoid these scams and schemes. Most scams are looking for your personal details to impersonate you. These details take the form of a Username and Password as well as (often) a PIN number. Phone Never give this personal information to anyone who phones you - regardless of who they say they are or how nice they are. These people are looking to gain your trust to get your details. You can always ask to ring them back on a main line - ask for their extension number. Email Email scams have become extremely common. It is extremely easy to replicate an email to look like it is real. No organisation will contact you via email to ask for your details to confirm who you are. [Pro Tip] - hovering your mouse over any link in an email (or website) will reveal what the link actually is. Website When surfing the internet - beware - of everything. Too often an innocuous search for something will lead you to sites that are not to be trusted. Even trustworthy sites can have ads which

are malicious. One website I use almost daily (www.speedtest.net) which is an industry standard and very trustworthy has an advert for “MacKeeper” on it which is a known malignant app. Some tips to follow: 1 If you didn’t ask to be contacted it’s highly unlikely the Institution will contact you. 2 Larger international companies such as Microsoft or Apple will never contact you - They do not monitor your computer in any way and have no authority or remit to “fix” the software on your machine. 3 If you find a piece of software which is “Free” and seems too good to be true it probably is! Always do your research before just “clicking”. Ask someone in the industry; Google other people’s experiences of the software. read the reviews. I will be exhibiting at the Kerry EXPO in the INEC this coming Sunday, April 9. Feel free to pop in and have a chat!

‘Girl Guides Have Kept Me Young!’ SHE has been a positive force in the community for over half a century as Maura Fitzgerald mentored innumerable protégées in her role as a leader with the Irish Girl Guides (IGG). And on Saturday Maura, a leader with Torc/St Mary’s Guides, received her 50-year service pin from IGG President Maureen Dillon at the organisation’s annual council meeting held in Airfield Estate, Dublin. Maura was Lieutenant with the 2nd Kerry Company and Captain of 2nd Killarney Company for many years. She was also a Brownie leader with Kilcummin and Killarney Packs in the 1980s and 1990s (Brownies is the IGG section for 7-10 year olds). Maura held the role of District Commissioner for Killarney and International Commis-

sioner for IGG; in the latter role she represented IGG at both European and World Guiding conferences. She has also been involved with Senior Branch – the section of IGG for 14-30 year olds – both with young leaders in Killarney and, more recently, with Sika Rangers. Maura currently serves as an IGG Trainer. Presenting the award, Maureen said: “Maura is one of the extraordinary women volunteers who has given exemplary service to our organisation over this time - as a member, a leader, an informal educator and a trainer of other adult leaders.” Maura said she felt privileged to receive the award and wondered where the years had gone. “Time flies when you’re enjoying yourself,” she said. “Since I joined as a Girl Guide at 12

years I have got enormous enjoyment, satisfaction, confidence and friendships from my involvement in Girl Guiding,” she said. “My role as a leader has given me many very interesting opportunities. I think of all the leaders whom I have worked with and especially those

who have passed away. Those people and Guiding have made me the person I am today.” She added: “Seeing girls of all different ages and denominations develop in different ways in a non-competitive and supportive way gave me much joy. Those girls kept me young!”

Pressure On Hospital Bed Capacity

DUE to a very high volume of presentations at the emergency department and subsequent admissions, there is a significant pressure on bed capacity throughout UHK, resulting in prolonged wait times in the emergency department at present. Hospital management has now activated the escalation policy to manage the situation over the coming days, and has taken the step of writing to local GPs informing them of this. “Every effort is being made to ensure that each patient receives appropriate care, in the shortest time frame possible,” stated UHK.

Kevin’s Legacy Lives On

TALENTED broadcaster and popular Glenflesk man Kevin Casey was remembered at an event held in his honour last Saturday. The award-winning journalist passed away on January 3 after a short battle with cancer. Having started his career at Radio Kerry, Kevin worked as Sports Editor at WLR in Waterford City. Last Saturday night the Radio Kerry Kevin Casey Journalism Award was presented in his memory to Kenmare native Cailie Murphy. Kevin was no stranger to awards and was honoured on numerous occasions at the GAA’s McNamee Awards. Last October he won a prestigious Gold PPI National Radio Award in the Sports Story category for an interview he recorded

with hurler Maurice Shanahan on his struggle with depression. Kevin, 40, lived in Dunmore East with his wife Marguerite and their three young sons, Paul, Mark and James. Kevin’s family and friends organised the fundraiser in his memory, with music from Millstreet band The Kelts. Glenflesk Community Joins Forces In Battle Against Burglars

Attendees at the public meeting in Glenflesk on Wednesday night. Pics: Konrad Paprocki

IN THE wake of a spate of burglaries, the community of Glenflesk has joined forces to safeguard properties in the area. Over 100 people turned out in force at a public meeting on Wednesday night focusing on crime prevention and highlighting the Community Alert imitative. Superintendent Flor Murphy of Killarney Gardaí addressed the gathering, at St Agatha’s Community Hall, along with Sergeant Jim Foley and local liaison

officer Garda Finbarr O’Donovan. “Organised by Glenflesk Community Alert, the focus of the meeting was on how the gardaí and community can work together to make our homes and community safer,” said spokesman Rory D’Arcy. “The importance of the Community Text Service was underlined with registration available on the night.” In February, six houses along a stretch of road off the N22 were burgled in less than three hours.

Seven rare GAA medals, some over 100 years old, including a gold 1913 All-Ireland football medal, a silver medal from the 1908 Munster final and a 1913 Croke Cup medal, were among the items stolen from one house. Anyone living in Glenflesk interested in being included in the Text Alert Service can register for €10 in O’Brien’s Shop, Glenflesk, or O’Donoghue’s Shop, Barradubh.

Killarney To Host Town’s Biggest-Ever Soccer Game THE stage is set for the biggest-ever game in the history of soccer in Killarney when local kingpins Killarney Celtic take on the might of Dublin’s Sheriff Youth Club FC in the semi-final of the FAI Junior Cup semi-final this Saturday. With the quarter-final victory over Limerick side Janesboro FC attracting over 2,000 supporters to Celtic Park, this crunch encounter is expected to see a bumper crowd turning out to see the local boys in green battle it out with the current cup holders and the top junior side in the country. The big game will kick off at 5pm at Kilbrean Park, home of Mastergeeha FC. Celtic manager Brian Spillane said: “Sheriff are the best junior club the game has ever seen and they will expect to beat us. We are the underdogs, nobody expects us to win but we’ll give it everything and there will be no blame game afterwards if we lose.” Sheriff’s manager, Alan Reilly, declared:

“I’m not trying to play down the favourites’ tag but it’s a semi-final and anything can happen.” He said: “If we do what we are capable of I’d be quite confident but this is the Junior Cup and Celtic are on a good run so we’ll have our work cut out for us.” Celtic will be running shuttle-buses from the Killarney Outlet Centre bus park every quarter of an hour from 3.30pm to 4.30pm. Killarney Celtic Chairman Paul Sherry remarked: “We are putting crowd control plans in place as we are expecting a huge attendance given that we have gone further than any other Kerry side in this competition.” A number of car parking spaces will be available at the ground on a first come first served basis, and weather depending, car-parking facilities will also be available close by. Killarney Celtic have produced a special souvenir programme for the big match, which is now on sale.

Our Money’s On The Peaky Bankers Of St Brendan’s Words: Eve Kelliher

Monika, Rafal and Michael of Brian James.

NOT only are they top of the class on the football and soccer pitches what with their Hogan Cup and FAI Schools Minor Boys National Cup victories, but the Sem boys are also proving to be experts in opening championship level banks. A group of St Brendan’s College students, known as The Peaky Bankers, have powered through to the AIB Build A Bank National Finals. This is the first time that St Brendan’s College has qualified for this prestigious award. The Peaky Bankers, whose name is a nod to the popular TV series, is made up of six transition year students, Oran O’Donoghue, Donal Lucey, Harry and James Knoblauch, Cathal Swords and Michael Buckley. Killarney Advertiser caught up with members of the hardworking team as they created a working bank within the school. “Our mission is based on three core principals, these are mental health, brotherhood and faith,” stated the students. The enterprising group created a cam-

paign together known as #brotherhood which raised awareness around mental health and in particular suicide. “We open our bank every Tuesday in the school cafeteria and run competitions and games each week that always creates awareness around mental health and brotherhood,” stated the team. “We have had guest speakers such as James O’Donoghue and Tom Lucey to speak about the importance of a hobby, a good bunch of friends and a good support network.” When a member of the bank lodges money or opens a new account they receive a ‘We Back Our Boys’ welcome pack which includes a number of goodies including an introduction booklet with helpful contact numbers and social media links. The AIB Build A Bank National Final takes place in Dublin at the end of this month. The boys have their hearts set on claiming the €5,000 cash prize for their school. They hope to put the money towards research and events for the school to create more awareness of mental health issues amongst the students.

Tractor Revs Up For A New Lease Of Life

Mags Moriarty who with her husband Mike donated the tractor, is pictured at the unveiling with Killarney Classic & Vintage Club members.

07.04.17 AN OLD tractor that had been falling apart at the seams has been given a dramatic new lease of life in aid of some very deserving charities. A battered 1968 Massey Ferguson MF135 had been parked up and abandoned until it was acquired by Michael and Mags Moriarty of Moriarty’s Centra and Central Car Sales, Farranfore, and donated to the Killarney Valley Classic and Vintage Club. Volunteers spent several weeks over the long months of winter restoring the 49-year-old tractor bit by bit with the support of the Killarney Men’s Shed – where the work took place – and the Kerry Mental Health Association. The end result – a beautifully restored dream machine – was unveiled to the public at a press reception in the Killarney Men’s Shed on Saturday evening. The carefully restored vehicle – now valued at several thousand euro – will be raffled in the coming months and the proceeds will be divided between the four chosen charities to benefit from this year’s South Kerry Ploughing Championships and Harvest Show. The charities that will gain are Down Syndrome Kerry, the Irish Pilgrimage Trust, Kerry-Cork Health Link Bus and the Kerry branch of the Irish Kidney Association. The winning ticket which will be drawn at the prizegiving ceremony after the annual South Kerry Ploughing Championships and Harvest Show on Fleming’s Farm in Fossa on September 3. Killarney Valley Classic and Vintage Club chairman Tom Leslie, has thanked everybody involved, particularly project managers Bernard O’Sullivan and Thomas Wharton, for their wonderful work and the commitment they have shown. “This project would not be possible without the generosity of the sponsors who got involved and the club members who have given up their free time each week to work on the tractor,” said Tom. Tickets for the tractor raffle are available to purchase from the four charities and at various outlets over the summer months and also from all committee members of the club.

Awards

Festival Committee Honours Noel

THE work done behind the scenes of any event is always crucial but often these heroes go unsung. This week the St Patrick’s Festival Killarney committee has presented an award to the person who had made an invaluable contribution to the staging of the event. The chairperson of the committee, Anne Marie Kennelly, said: “There are many people deserving of this award, but the vote was unanimous when Noel O’Leary and his team was suggested. “Under the direction of Breda Mulryan and Kieran O’Halloran, Noel and his team do tremendous work. From bollards to lights once action is agreed you can rest easy as it will be done.” Tom Tobin of Killarney Medals and Trophies sponsored the award, which was presented to Noel O’Leary by Dermot Healy, safety officer, St Patrick’s Festival Killarney. “We wish to thank everyone at Kerry County Council for all their help and support,” said Anne Marie.

Lynn and Beaufort native Ivan’s paths first crossed in the bride’s home city of Aberdeen when Ivan was working there and they got engaged in December 2015 in Killarney. The bride, the daughter of Christine and Alan Ross, and the groom, the son of Bridie Moriarty and the late Jerry Moriarty, exchanged vows recently in King’s College Chapel, Old Aberdeen. The couple celebrated with their guests at a reception in Ardoe House Hotel. Lynn’s friends Angela Skene and Sonia Carimando together with a cousin, Nicola Tole, were bridesmaids, while Ivan’s brother Adrian and Wayne Moriarty lent their support as groomsmen along with Lynn’s brother Greig Ross. The couple’s baby daughter Caoimhe took centre stage as flower girl along with Lynn’s nieces Abigail Ross and Katie Ross and Ivan’s nieces Aine Moriarty and Lucy Phelan. “Our celebration was a big traditional wedding with lots of family and friends,” said Lynn. The newlyweds, who now live in Singapore, honeymooned in Ireland. IT WAS the smash-hit production of the year in 2016 and the good news is Patrick – The 1916 Story of Captain Patrick O’Connor will be back in the INEC on Thursday, May 11. The drama based on the moving story of Patrick O’Connor is written and directed by journalist and author Aidan O’Connor, Rathmore, and depicts the final weeks of Patrick’s life before he joined the GPO Garrison on Easter Monday, 1916. The show ran in Rathmore Community Centre this time last year and such was the demand for tickets that an extra two nights were added to the original two-night run. It was later presented to a packed-out INEC for two performances. “A year on

people were still asking about it and talking about it,” Aidan told Killarney Advertiser. “It is a timeless love story.” The talented cast of 90 actors, singers, musicians and stage crew are getting together again for the upcoming production with schools from across Ireland swift to book their seats for the matinee show at 11am and there has also been huge demand already for the evening show, at 8pm. ‘It Is Very Rare For People To Achieve Their Ultimate Dreams In Life – I Just Have’ Announcing his retirement from the Kerry senior football team, Colm Cooper says representing Kerry for the past 17 years has been a source of pride IT HAS been an amazing journey and one that I never wanted to end, however, I feel that this is the right time for me step away from intercounty football. Representing the Kingdom for the past 17 years has given me a tremendous amount of pride and satisfaction. To my Kerry teammates that I have soldiered with throughout the years, thank you for your guidance, patience and friendship. I feel extremely lucky to have experienced so many wonderful highlights with you all. To get the opportunity to play with, and against, some of the greatest players in the history of the GAA has given me memories that I will always treasure. During my career I have been very fortunate to work with some outstanding Kerry managers. They gave me the confidence to develop my game which allowed me to perform at the highest level. I would like to thank the Kerry Coun-

ty Board, backroom staff and medical teams for their constant help and support throughout my career. A huge thank you to the loyal Kerry fans at home and abroad for their continuous support. I now become a supporter and wish the team all the best in their quest for honours in 2017. I would like to thank my club Dr Crokes for nurturing my talents and giving me the belief that there was no limit to what I could achieve, also to get the opportunity to captain Kerry teams is something I’m extremely privileged to have done. I’m looking forward to continuing my Dr Crokes career. Finally to my family, without you none of my successes would have been possible. Through the ups and downs, you were the people that believed in me and kept me going. For this I am forever grateful. It is very rare for people to achieve their ultimate dreams in life – I just have.

07.04.17 Colm Cooper leaves a treasure trove of memories behind him, says Kerry GAA PRO John O’Leary

‘Colm exuded class in everything he did on the field of play’

Pic: Eamonn Keogh

Tributes To A Legend “Colm Cooper is to Gaelic football what Séamus Heaney is to poetry, really. A deity of his craft. Ptah of the code. Gooch is a true genius” Peter McNamara “Put Gooch in a phone box with a pack of wolves and he’d still have the poise to hit ’em with a dummy solo and stroll out unscathed. The greatest” Mike Quirke “It looks like the main man is leaving the scene. What a player. An absolute wizard and the coolest and classiest of them all” Steven McDonnell “His awareness and decision making is on a different level. His ability to slow everything down for a second, his skills and of course that bit of magic he possesses with a feint or a dummy is what makes him so unique” Eamonn Fitzmaurice, Kerry Senior Football Manager “Colm, probably the most gifted footballer of his generation, never forgot where he came from and has always made himself available whenever needed by the club” Denis Coleman, chairman, Dr Crokes

COLM COOPER, one of the greatest Kerry players ever to grace the game of Gaelic football, has decided to call time on his illustrious intercounty career. The Dr Crokes player, who will turn 34 in June, does so just two weeks after winning the one medal that had eluded him for many years – an All Ireland Club Championship medal. Cooper first came to the attention of the Kerry GAA public when winning a Senior County Championship medal in 2000 at the tender age of 17 in the company of his brothers Danny and Vince when Dr Crokes defeated An Ghaeltacht. A year and a half later he made his senior debut for Kerry in the Allianz League Division 2 Final against Laois in the Gaelic Grounds and duly helped himself to 1-2 in the Number 15 jersey. Later that year he made his championship debut against Limerick and although he and his Kerry teammates had to give best to Armagh in the All Ireland Final of that year, he was recognised by the All Star selectors in his very first year at senior level. He went

on to play in nine All-Ireland finals, winning four, and was unlucky to be still recovering from a serious injury when Kerry defeated Donegal in the 2014 final. In all he played 85 championship games for Kerry, scoring 23-283 in the process and along the way he won every honour available to him including Texaco Footballer of the Year in 2004 and eight All Stars. Cooper, an exemplary sportsman, endeared himself not only to the Kerry faithful but also to the wider GAA community where he was the perfect role model for our youth. He exuded class in everything he did on the field of play and we were once again reminded of that on St Patrick’s Day when he scored the all important goal as Dr Crokes triumphed in the club championship final – 25 years after their first title when a youthful Colm Cooper was the team mascot. Colm Cooper leaves a treasure trove of memories behind him for us all to savour and on behalf of Kerry supporters everywhere and indeed on behalf of the extended GAA community, today we say thanks for those memories, Colm.

“It was a privilege for me to work with Colm Cooper. He was the most intelligent player I have ever seen. I remember saying one time that Cooper had forgotten more about football than the rest of us will ever know” Jack O’Connor, former Kerry manager “Colm not only inspired his fellow teammates on the field of play, but generations of people, young and old – all over Ireland and beyond” Tim Murphy, chairman, Kerry County Committee “He was the ultimate purveyor of skill. He was almost a computer-animated footballer. He would deliver a ball like a butler on a silver platter. The other thing was the deftness of touch, so that he would deliver the ball to his colleague’s advantage. He could bounce it in front of him, he could put it in his chest. It was a thing of beauty” Joe Brolly, RTÉ

“Colm thrilled all generations of sports fans with his brilliance and inspired a whole new generation of sports men and women with his standards” Deputy Brendan Griffin “Colm has brought so much joy to so many people, an outstanding ambassador for the game and always the complete gentleman” Councillor Michael Cahill Pic: Don MacMonagle

NEWS A Hero To Everyone, From Taoisigh To The Tiniest Of Tots

07.04.17

COLM COOPER’S star quality both on and off the pitch was what endeared him to a nation. The touching tributes that flowed in from the four-time All-Ireland winner’s fellow sporting greats and fans alike as soon as he announced his retirement from his intercounty career on Tuesday only go some way towards reflecting his charisma. As well as his footballing wizardry, Colm’s people skills are second to none, whether he is greeting heads of state or the tiniest of tots. At events, despite his unassuming nature, Colm always makes the time to stop and chat with everyone from the long-time GAA stalwarts to the very youngest pupils in a junior infant classroom. In recent years, the Kerry hero would provide his services as a coach for the

day to the school of the child who won an annual competition organised by Daly’s SuperValu. It was a dream prize and the kids knew it. Seeing Colm in action at Anabla National School and a year later at Lissivigeen, I noticed how he gave his full attention to the task in hand. He took his young acolytes’ questions seriously and visibly boosted their confidence. It was clear that ensuring they got the very most from the experience was what mattered to him. The pupils knew it, and loved him for it. Afterwards, Colm demonstrated that legendary team spirit as he arranged the classes into expertly placed groupings for the photographers. Former Kerry manager Jack O’Connor this week described Colm Cooper as “totally without ego and a complete team player”. I couldn’t agree more.

The Greatest Of All Time Adam Moynihan charts Colm Cooper’s career from his debut for Kerry in 2002

KILLARNEY’S Colm Cooper, considered by many to be the greatest Gaelic footballer of all time, has announced his retirement from the Kerry senior football team. The 33-year-old released a statement on Tuesday morning confirming his decision, saying it was the “right time to step away from inter county football.” There were fears that Gooch was going to call it a day once his club Dr Crokes were finished with their All-Ireland Club Championship campaign and that’s exactly how it panned out. That Club Championship was the one trophy missing from Cooper’s long list of honours and the experienced forward was pivotal in their victory over Slaughtneil in the final last month, his classy goal helping the Crokes to their first All-Ireland since 1992. While his teammates celebrated in the dressing

Right Time To Step Away From Intercounty Football

room, Gooch returned to the Croke Park pitch alone and walked up to the Hill. It’s clear, now, that he was saying goodbye. Since making his debut for Kerry in 2002, the Ardshanavooley native has lit up the inter county scene. He immediately captured the imagination of the GAA world with his incredible technique and ability to outsmart and outplay even the most formidable defenders in the country. He won his first All-Ireland in 2004 and led Kerry to further successes in 2006, 2007 and 2009. A serious knee injury in 2014 was a major setback but he recovered in time to be part of the set-up when Kerry beat Donegal in the final later that year. In total, Gooch played 85 championship games (third all-time) and picked up eight All-Star awards. He bows out as Kerry’s all-time leading championship scorer.

Colm Has Given Us All Countless Hours Of Enjoyment Kerry Senior Football Manager Eamonn Fitzmaurice pays tribute to a star player ON BEHALF of the players and management I would like to congratulate Colm Cooper on his retirement from intercounty football. He has been an incredible servant to the green and gold since his debut 15 years ago in a Division 2 League final in 2002 where he scored a goal with his first touch of the ball which set the tone for what was to follow. His list of honours outlines what an illustrious career he has had. I was lucky enough to have both played with and managed him. As a player when on the ball in matches I looked for him and in training I tended to steer clear of him. I thoroughly enjoyed working with him as manager. When I first took over Kerry one of the main things I wanted to do for the 2013 season was to release Colm from the confines of the inside line and allow him to express himself from cen-

tre forward. It was a fresh challenge for him and he set about learning the intricacies of his new position with gusto. His awareness and decision making is on a different level. His ability to slow everything down for a second, his skills and of course that bit of magic he possesses with a feint or a dummy is what makes him so unique. His iron will to win and his leadership abilities shone through also. While recovering from a serious injury during the summer of 2014 he helped to drive the squad towards the All Ireland which depicted what a team player he was. He was one of the few players that managed to transcend county loyalties and was a player that people from all over the country loved to watch. He has given us all countless hours of enjoyment. I wish him all the best for the future on and off the field.

NEWS Sporting World Pays Homage On Twitter “A few defenders will sleep better tonight now that the great one has retired. Congrats on a great career” Shane Lowry “Best wishes Gooch. The best ever. Judy Murray Among Colm’s Many Fans

SHE is mum to the world’s number-one tennis player and both of her sons are grand-slam champions. So it comes as no surprise that Judy Murray would know a sporting great when she saw one. During last year’s national league final, she watched in Croke Park as Dublin won their fourth title in a row. But what impressed the Scottish onlooker was Colm Cooper. Among the swell of good wishes on social media this week, Judy’s tweet hit headlines: “Dear Colm Cooper. You were my man of the match. Wizard.”

Commuters Count Cost Of Failure To Resolve Bus Dispute

Comment

Words: Eve Kelliher

TWO weeks in, the Bus Éireann strikes are still in the headlines nationally. It’s a pity the dispute couldn’t have been averted or solved swiftly as the industrial action has had a huge ripple effect. A fortnight ago I arrived at Killarney Railway Station only to find that the industrial action had had a knock-on effect on rail services also that day, with some trains cancelled. Fourteen days on and the reality is that missed medical and other appointments have become routine as a result of the strikes – even if many of those travelling are sympathetic to the strikers’ cause. I was in the fortunate position that I could reschedule my arrangements but for many people, the failure to resolve this long-running dispute has resulted in loss of earnings or worse. A Killarney commuter, who arrived at the railway station last week only to discover her train wasn’t

running, said: “I have no issue with scheduled strikes but this nonsense boils my blood. I have missed out on a day’s pay and let people down.” She added: “I checked the website the previous night and it said all trains were running. I could have made alternative arrangements as could have my fellow passengers.” That same day an elderly man stood on the Killarney platform clutching his ticket for the no-show service. As a result he missed a hospital appointment in the Mater he had waited months for. Locals and visitors alike are being obliged to make expensive alternative arrangements and the timing isn’t great for the tourism industry in Kerry as we move towards the summer season. As the commuter noted: “Who will compensate me for lost earnings, the old man for further degeneration of his eyes as he waits for surgery, for a tourist’s very expensive taxi to the airport?”

The Transport Minister Shane Ross has consistently rejected calls for him to personally intervene in the dispute. The strike began in protest at plans by management to introduce new cost-saving efficiency measures and work practice changes without agreement. Talks continued at the Workplace Relations Commission on Thursday in a bid to bring the dispute to an end. Unions have insisted they would not be removing pickets during the new round of negotiations. Siptu has said it has members in Munster who have been dismissed and that others had had their pay cut by €250-€300 per week. • How has the Bus Éireann strike affected you and what are your thoughts on it? Trump Set To Meet His Chinese Counterpart After Twitter Rants WHO can forget US President Donald Trump’s tweet that China made up the concept of global warming “in order to make US manufacturing non-competitive”? The US President has taken issue with China many times, both before and after he took office in November. Interesting times lie ahead as he and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping, who have disagreed on numerous matters, are set to come face to face for the first time at Trump’s luxury resort in Florida this week. Most people find it awkward when they come face to face for the first time with someone they have lambasted but somehow I don’t think it will faze Mr Trump. Even before North Korea’s ballistic missile launch on Wednesday, Pyongyang’s nuclear weapons programme was always going to dominate the Trump-

Xi summit. The North is economically reliant on its ally Beijing, and Washington has long pushed China to use its leverage to punish the state. Last month Trump lashed out at China on Twitter for doing “little to help” rein in Pyongyang and he has since warned the US is prepared to go it alone in bringing the North to heel. During the presidential campaign, Trump repeatedly bashed China for its “unfair” trade policies and accused it of artificially depressing its currency to give its exports an unfair advantage. In a tweet last week, he highlighted China’s massive trade imbalance with the US — over $310 billion (about €290 billion) last year — as a serious problem that could make his upcoming talks with Xi “difficult”. Trump infuriated China by taking a protocol-breaking phone call from Taiwan President Tsai Ing-

wen and suggesting he might break from the US’s long-standing One China Policy, which nominally acknowledges the Asian giant’s claims over Taiwan without recognising them.

Ever Felt Like Upping Sticks And Travelling The Globe? Eve Kelliher talks to a Killarney man whose video series is putting the world in the frame YOU’RE never too young to travel the globe – that’s the idea that has propelled Killarney man Sean Clifford, his French wife Valerie and their daughter on a series of world travels. In 2014, Sean, Valerie and Enya, then four, set off to explore to Argentina on what proved to be a hugely successful trip. “It was like a little adventure for Enya, cruising through the jungles and mountains,” said Sean. Afterwards, the family decided to share the experience with Enya’s friends and classmates through the creation of short video clips. The response they received from children and teachers was “extremely enthusiastic”, according to multimedia developer Sean, who is from Woodlawn Drive originally. The family spent the next two years producing a professional online travel series documenting their adventures around the world, as they unravel cultures in their own unique and fun manner. In April 2015 this blossomed into “The Kid Trotter” series (all of which can be viewed for free on www. thekidtrotter.com and social media). After the success of the pilot series online, the Cliffords devoted their time from 2016 to travel the world and produce this series in 10 countries (Malaysia, Cambodia, India, Nepal, New Zealand, New

Caledonia, Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia). Now Sean has been handpicked to represent and promote Malta, European Capital of Culture 2018, in an innovative cultural video series. “We produce this series in both English and French and it has already (despite only having published two countries to date) broken the half million views after being featured in press across 10 different countries,” said Sean. The Cliffords are passionate about sharing what they describe as their “real, human experiences far from attraction parks”. “Together we have hunted fish and coconut crabs with tribes in the South Pacific, trained in a Cambodian circus, gone to school in a rural Vietnam school, taught English in Nepal, and picked tea leaves in the highest tea plantation in the world in southern India,” said Sean. The family both self-produce and self-finance The Kid Trotter video travel series especially for children and families called The Kid Trotter. The Cliffords will jet off with a filming crew to the Mediterranean in partnership with the Malta tourism Authority to film a series of videos that will unravel the unique Maltese culture. These videos will showcase the island for its 2018 European capital of Culture celebrations.

Tributes Paid To Nicola Collins THE priest speaking at the funeral of Nicola Collins said her family and friends had been robbed of their chance to say goodbye to her. A murder investigation is ongoing after the Tralee woman was found dead in Farranree, Cork, on March 27. The family and friends of the 38-year-old mother of three are still in a state of shock, Fr Padraig Walsh told the congregation at her funeral Mass in St Brendan’s Church. Nicola is mourned by her parents Kay and Michael, sister Carly, children Nick, Adam and Michael, her former husband Elaije, relatives and friends.

Molls Gap Update WORK on Molls Gap is expected to be substantially completed and open to traffic by April 28. The estimated cost of the repairs works to the retaining wall on the N71 near Molls Gap is €720,000; this includes design costs, construction, site supervision and traffic management. Minor works are expected to continue on Molls Gap until May 12. Works have been extensive but the rate of progress has been positive and it is hoped the route may even open a little earlier than the proposed date.

Ironic Timing Of Waste Disposal Charge Increase I FIND it ironic that Kerry County Council should raise its waste disposal charges and introduce charges for recycling, the same week as the Kerry County Clean-Up which it supports. Every couple of months they issue a statement of how tough they are going to get with litterbugs. More litter wardens, CCTV cameras, and

their daftest idea yet, drones! Here are the statistics for 2016....634 reported cases of littering, which led to 17 prosecutions and 9 convictions, yes, 9, and only a tiny fraction of those have paid their fines! So now they decide to place the costs of recycling on decent civic-minded citizens who already dispose of their waste in a responsible manner....you

now have to purchase, from the council, plastic bags, into which you dispose of the plastic you already have to dispose of! Yes, take a moment to get your head around that! Brendan O’Shea, Listry, Faha, Killarney

New Gelish Dip Three-Week Manicure Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio is delighted to be the first in Munster to showcase a new long-lasting nail system, says Jill Duggan DIP your way to gorgeous nails with no fuss and no mess, as seen on television show Xposé. Dip is available in variety colours that match Gelish. It offers up to 21 days’ wear and is faster and easier to apply than traditional acrylic manicure systems. Gelish Dip is much stronger, more flexible and much more durable, so if you’re after a fab finish, give this a try. Your actual colour comes in the form of a pigmented powder. Your nails will be prepped (filed and slightly buffed) — and then a base coat is applied.

You then dip your nails into the coloured powder (hence the name Gelish Dip) before an activator and topcoat are applied. The whole process takes less than 45 minutes. While it’s meant to last two weeks, some have reported that it still looks good four weeks on with not a chip in sight. Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio is thrilled to be the first in Munster to introduce this new nail technique. We look forward to giving you more glamour and longer-lasting manicures than ever. ‘Please Carry An Organ Donor Card’ WITH Organ Donor Awareness Week concluding this weekend, Killarney man Denis Breen is highlighting the importance of carrying an Organ Donor Card. Denis, from Hazelwood Drive, noted how the cards play a vital role in saving lives and how the Irish Kidney Association-produced cards are widely available. Organ donation has resulted in

over 6000 transplant operations in Ireland alone. Sadly, Denis’s father, Denis Breen Senior, passed away this year and his family organised a walk in his memory last Saturday. “We raised €313 which we will present to the dialysis unit in University Hospital Kerry. My late dad felt comfortable in the unit and the staff were very caring,” said Denis Junior.

“My dad was on dialysis three days a week for four hours at a time and had been on a waiting list for a transplant for two years.” Denis, who thanked all who took part in the fundraising walk, added: “Donor cards are widely available in doctor’s surgeries and pharmacies so please think about carrying one as it can save a life.”

own locality,” said project coordinator Miranda Cournane. “We know from research studies that young people in particular have a need to engage with music. As well as the numerous cognitive benefits that arise from the learning of a musical instrument, children and young people also benefit socially and emotionally from participating in music-making.”

Recipe

Of The Week

EASY GRANOLA Healthy breakfast options are trending at the moment and The Lake Hotel head chef Noel Enright shares his recipe for a delicious wholesome morning treat

2 tbsp vegetable oil 125ml maple syrup 2tbsp honey 1tsp vanilla extract 300g porridge flakes 50g sunflower seeds tbsp sesame seeds 50g pumpkin seeds 100g flaked almonds 100g dried fruit (we recommend cranberries but sultanas, raisins or even chopped apricots will do) 50g coconut flakes

METHOD

Mix oil, maple syrup, honey and vanilla extract in a bowl. Mix through the dry ingredients except the dried fruit and coconut. Line two flat trays with parchment paper and spread mix out evenly. Life Through The Lens Of The Gospels MATTHEW 26:14-27:66: The account of the Passion is a vivid story with a variety of characters and much action. To enter into the passage we can read the story slowly and see if we can identify with different characters in the story. Also any one scene within the story can provide us with much food for reflection and prayer. Keep in mind that one of the aims in reflecting on the passage is to discover the good news the story has for us. Here are just a few general pointers for prayer: The identity of Jesus is revealed as the Messiah and the Son of God, not with a display of human power, but as one who was prepared to suffer unto death to show us how our God loves us. How does the Passion story speak to you as a revelation of how God loves you? Jesus gives us an example of patient endurance and faithfulness in suffering. Suffering is something we all encounter. It is not something that anyone likes but sometimes we cope with it better than others. What have you found helps you to cope better with suffering? As you read through the narrative of the Passion where do you find yourself resonating with a character in the action? Is there any message there for you that is life-giving? John Byrne OSA, Veritas

Musings LOOK at Judas and watch him – fearfully betraying Jesus. Look at Jesus as his heart goes out to the weakness of his disciples. In all sorts of weakness in our lives, the love of God is triumphant. Let him be the strength in your weakness and sinfulness. Is Judas motivated by anger and disappointment? Had he a different vision of the messianic kingdom than Jesus? Did he resent that Jesus saw through him when he protested at the waste of Mary’s costly ointment at the feast? One thing is clear: he refused to accept Jesus as he was. Like us, he didn’t see that it is we, not God, who must change. Sacred Space for Lent 2017 – Messenger Publications

The Deep End THIS WEEKEND we read Matthew’s account of the death of Jesus; yes it is the long Gospel but we should not miss out on the journey that spending time with this account offers. As you read perhaps you might notice the various characters and their roles, their words and actions. A good question to ask as we enter into this text is ‘Where do I stand?’ Are you looking on as a bystander, are you in the group of disciples or some other character: Pilate? Pilate’s wife? Perhaps it is a more difficult journey as you relate to Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane, a Jesus who is “grieved” because of many things: isolation, the disappointment he must feel because of the abandonment of his friends, betrayal, loneliness, mocking, torture? This is not an easy journey. We know the story does not end here, but for this week we enter into the reality of betrayal, trial, suffering and death. We might remember today those who stand for justice, those who are counter-cultural, those who stand against oppressive systems even though the path is often dangerous and lonely. We might recall times we felt betrayed, abandoned or times we were in despair. Try to return to this text during the week, perhaps reading a small section each day as we continue to ask ourselves: ‘Where do I stand?’ Jane Mellet, Veritas

Grace Notes Hidden Stars

and I am always blown away at how quickly a talented group like that can accompany you, with no practice, just a 5 second discussion about the key in which the song will be sung.

Every time we buy a ticket to an event like a concert we buy it with a certain expectation attached, says Killarney singer and singing teacher Grace Foley

WE EXPECT performers to have a certain level of talent. Perhaps we are already a big fan of the act so we know we are in for a treat. I absolutely love when I find what I call “hidden treasures”. These treasures are not always found on a big stage or a packed venue. These hidden stars are often found playing in pubs and hotels across the country. Perhaps they also play to bigger audiences but to see them in action in smaller venues is so exciting. On a recent night out I was treated to a very high level of musical entertainment at the Grand Killarney. Downstairs a group of traditional musicians played tunes with such ease and skill that it looked like they were born playing those instruments! I was lucky enough to sing a few songs with them

I then went upstairs to the Liquid Lounge where the incredibly talented Jack Patrick Healy is the resident entertainer. He takes the punters on a musical journey through so many genres and with such ease that I sometimes want to tell everyone to stop talking so we can sit and hear every note! This man really knows how to put on a show and he creates a cabaret-like atmosphere that I have never experienced anywhere before. When I think about some of my most memorable experiences of hearing extremely talented musicians, they often took place away from the stage. •

Prices Rise 4% In Kerry HOUSE prices rose by an average of 4.3% during the first three months of 2017, the largest three-month increase in two years, according to the latest House Price Report released by Daft. ie. This means that the national average list price during the first three months of the year was €230,000, 9.4% higher than a year previously and over €65,000 higher than its lowest point. The annual rate of inflation in Dublin was 8.7% in the year to March, up from just 1% at the same time last year. Inflation has also increased in the other cities and in Leinster outside of Dublin. In

both Galway and Limerick, the average price is 16.3% higher than a year previously. In Cork city, prices are 10.7% higher than the same period in 2016, while in Waterford, the increase was 13.9%. In Kerry, prices in the first three months of 2017 were 4% higher than a year previously, compared to a rise of 6% seen a year ago. The average house price is now €171,000, 21% above its lowest point. The decline in the total number of properties for sale nationwide continues, with just 20,500 homes on the market in March, down from almost 24,000 a year ago. This figure is at its lowest since October 2006 and is down two-thirds (67.4%) from the Oc-

Garden Magic Sowing The Seeds Of Summer Debby Looney shares her tips on how gardeners can make the most of the weeks ahead

AS I wander around Killarney at this time of year, I always hope for a few weeks of calm weather, no storms, gales, or even breezes. Because this is the time the cherry blossoms are out, and aren’t they absolutely wonderful?! Unfortunately, I live on a hill, and the chance of a calm day is slim. So I have had to give up the dream of a large, blossoming pink or white beauty, and have had to settle for some more, well, subtle, cherry blossoms and alternatives. Flowering apricots, such as Prunus mume “Omoi-no-mama’ “grows very well for me, and it is covered in single flowers for a month even when it is windy. The nice feature of this plant is that the flowers are different shades of pink and white on the same plant. Closely related to it is Prunus incisa “kojono-mai”, (“flight of the butterflies”…) a medium sized shrub with zig-zag stems, it too is an excellent choice. Both of these are also good trees for those who are bonsai enthusiasts! Alternatives to flowering cherries are Amelanchier varieties. They are vigorous small trees, with beautiful autumn foliage and are covered in white blossoms throughout March and April. Exochorda “The Bride’” is another beautiful alternative, with arching branches heavy with the whitest of flowers. A suggestion for underplanting – Epimedium. Epimediums are unassuming plants which you may not even notice in a garden centre, but they will charm you once you do! They are a low groundcover plant, ideal for woodland gardens. Their foliage is bright green, turning a bright red in the autumn. Small clusters of flowers appear in early spring, in some cases before the foliage. They come in many colours, but the pale bright yellow of Epimedium sulphureum is the easiest to find. Their common name is Bishop’s Hat. Now is the time for sowing most vegetable seeds, and I find modular sowing is the best way to avoid a lot of extra work. • Got a gardening question? Contact Debby Looney on barnhillgarden@gmail.com

tober 2008 peak of almost 63,000. Ronan Lyons, economist at Trinity College Dublin and author of the Daft.ie Report, said: “The combined effect of the tweaks to Central Bank mortgage rules and the new help-to-buy scheme has been to significantly stimulate first-time buyer demand. This is seen in renewed house price growth, particularly in and around the major cities. While there may have been a political motive to these measures, it is important now that the chronic lack of construction activity becomes the main focus for policymakers.”

Meeke & Nagle: Rally Corsica MEEKE and Nagle travel to the French island of Corsica this weekend for round four of the WRC. With confidence high from their “epic” win in Mexico they will be hoping for a good result this weekend. However the difficulty encountered on the mostly asphalt Monte Carlo will be in the back of their minds. The new spec Citroen WRC didn’t appear to be at home on that surface and the Corsican surface is similar albeit better weather. This is also the backyard of the title favourite, Sebastian Ogier, who is at home on this surface. The character of this first all-asphalt round of the season remains unchanged. Relentlessly twisty mountain roads wind around craggy rock faces, often with big drops on the other side, earning it the nickname “Rally of 10,000 Corners”. The asphalt is often abrasive and tough on tyres with constant

Cars And Coffee THE first Sunday of every month the Irish Festival of Speed (IFS) hosts a “cars and coffee” morning at the Eastway Plaza, Limerick. Last Sunday featured Supercar Sunday with some of the most iconic supercars on the planet, a Bugatti Veyron, a Ferrari Enzo, a Ford GT and a Ferrari F40 in attendance. There was an eye-popping range of Ferraris and Porsches along with all major marques represented form Lotus to Aston Martin and BMW to MG.

scrabbling for traction on damaged roads. The northeastern town of Bastia is the base and the rally features stopovers in all the Mediterranean island’s principal towns. Island capital Ajaccio hosts Thursday evening’s start ceremony. Friday’s leg, drivers face more than 120km with just a tyre change in Porticcio after the opening loop until the respite of evening service. Saturday’s second leg is the longest at almost 132km and comprises two identical loops of two stages in the north, split by service at Bastia Airport. The final day is the shortest at 64.20km but drivers wake up to the marathon 53.78km test from Antisanti to Poggio di Nazza, before the live TV Power Stage and the finish in Porto-Vecchio marina. Craig Breen is also contesting this weekend for the Citroen WRC team start one position behind Meeke in eight.

Antrim crew lead from start to finish in their Ford Fiesta World Rally Car. Beaufort man, Falvey joins John Crone (1989), Paul Nagle (2004) and Fionn Foley (2012) on the list of Kerry winning co-drivers while McGarrity became a twotime winner of the event, adding to his 2010 success. They were fasted on stage one, Knight’s Mountain and, thereafter, were never really troubled by the chasing pack. Kenny McKinstry, another former winner, did challenge the event winners through the latter stages but he lost too much time in the morning when the suspension on his Subaru Impreza was not performing as he wanted it. Kevin Barrett, now based in Maynooth, County Kildare, but a driver with strong Kerry connections was third in another Impreza. He and his co-driver Sean Mullally were the top Kerry Motor Club crew after a huge battle with husband and wife team Sean and Katrina Liston. The BMW crew put in the drive of the rally, running as high as third for much of the event until Barrett reeled them in but it was still their best performance to date. Limerick’s Ed Synan finished fifth overall. Tim Enright finished sixth in his Ford Escort Mk2. Just three seconds separated him and fellow club members Tom Relihan and Maurice McElligott in a Ford Escort Mk1. Charlie and Johnny Hickey were the top Killarney and District Motor Club crew in another Escort, they finished ninth and second in Class 14, one place ahead of Tommy Mason and Timmy Murphy in another Escort. PJ O’Dowd and John Young won the historic rally in their Talbot Sunbeam. Kenmare’s Shane McCarthy and Trisha Greavy won the Junior Rally. A special thanks to all the KDMC Marshals who attended and helped run the event.

Poetic Justice:

Mafia’s Ferrari Becomes Cop Car

A FERRARI 458 Spider confiscated from the mafia has been converted by the police force in Milan, Italy, and is now a working patrol car. The 458 Spider was seized back in September 2015 from an unnamed local organised crime syndicate and sat unused until the courts, using powerful anti-mafia legislation, assigned the droptop Ferrari to the constabulary. Now, according to police commander Antonio Barbato, the 458 will become an educational tool for young people and will visit local communities to send the message that, in the end, crime doesn’t pay. In recent history confiscating cars from the mafia has been a powerful PR tool for the Italian police force. Italian newspaper Lastampa.it claims this latest 458 Spider is one of an incredible 30 confiscated Ferraris and, in total, 172 vehicles have been seized. So far, out of that number, 163 cars have been re-assigned to the police and fire services.

Though your smile is gone forever, And your hand we cannot touch, We still have so many memories Of the Mom we loved so much.

What we would give if we could say We will go and see our Grandad today The laughs and stories that you told us Are memories fond and true.

Your memory is our keepsake, With which we’ll never part. We hold you close within our hearts, And there you shall remain. To walk with us throughout our lives Until we meet again.

We miss you from your fireside chair Your loving smile and gentle air Your vacant place no one can fill We miss you Grandad and always will.

St Brendan’s Retain Hogan Cup In Emphatic Fashion It’s back-to-back All-Irelands for the Sem as Killarney youngsters shine in Croke Park once again, writes Adam Moynihan Hogan Cup Final St Brendan’s College 0-18 St Peter’s College, Wexford 0-10 FOR the fourth time in the school’s history, St Brendan’s College are AllIreland senior football champions. Garry McGrath’s side made light work of St Peter’s of Wexford in Saturday’s final in Croke Park, eventually seeing off the Leinster champions with eight points to spare. It was young men against boys really as the Killarney lads dominated proceedings from more or less start to finish. St Peter’s had a good spell alright midway through the second half and managed to cut the deficit to four but the result was never in doubt. In the end, the emphatic scoreline didn’t flatter the Sem one bit. This Sem outfit had earned a reputation for being slow starters but there was nothing sluggish about their play in the opening stages of this one. Billy Courtney opened the scoring with a well-taken free and they raced into a 4-0 lead thanks to points from Ciarán Flynn and Donnachadh O’Sullivan (two). Mark O’Shea kicked a superb point off his left to make it 5-1 before Dara Moynihan extended the lead to five with another sweetly struck effort. Wing back Jack Griffin, who was superb throughout, got in on the act with a point in the 20th minute and when Billy Courtney kicked his second score, this time from a 45, the Sem led 8-2. David Shaw swung over two typically classy scores towards the end of the half to open up a ten points to three lead and you felt as though it would take a minor miracle for the Wexford school to turn things around in the second period. In fairness to the underdogs, there was a six or seven-minute burst where they rattled off four unanswered points to bring it back to 14-10, full forward Barry O’Connor coming to the fore and kicking some inspirational scores. Fortunately the Sem had too much about them to get overly unsettled by this run and another Courtney free along with a fisted effort from substitute Micheál Devlin and the score of the game from Shaw all but sealed the win with seven minutes still to play. Fittingly it was the captain Dara Moynihan who topped it all off with an

audacious score from the right hand corner in stoppage time. There were some great scenes at the final whistle as supporters and players celebrated the historic victory, and I think I speak for everyone when I say the biggest relief of the day came when Dara didn’t fall to his death from the podium. Well done to the players and the management team of Garry McGrath, Hugh Rudden and Arthur Fitzgerald on a fantastic achievement. St Brendan’s scorers: Donnachadh O’Sullivan (0-4), Billy Courtney (0-4f), David Shaw (0-4), Dara Moynihan (0-2), Ciarán Flynn (0-1), Mark O’Shea (0-1) and Micheál Devlin (0-1). Team: Robert Osborne; Lorcán McMonagle, Chris O’Donoghue, Seán O’Leary; Jack Griffin, Michael Potts, Niall Donohue; Billy Courtney, Cian Gammell; Dara Moynihan, Donnachadh O’Sullivan, Barry Keane; David Shaw, Mark O’Shea, Ciarán Flynn. Subs: M Devlin for Flynn (44), M Harnett for Keane (54), E Cosgrave for Griffin (61), N McCarthy for O’Shea (62) and D Brosnan for McMonagle (63).

Hogan Cup Win Demonstrates Strength Of Underage Football St Brendan’s College retained their All-Ireland football title with plenty to spare at Croke Park on Saturday when they defeated St Peter’s College, Wexford, by 18 points to 10, says Eamonn Fitzgerald

KERRY colleges have won the last four Hogan Cups when one considers Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne’s wins in 2014 and again in 2015. Kerry also won the last three All Ireland MFCs. That demonstrates the strength of underage football in Kerry. There were no goals recorded in last Saturday’s win. However St Peter’s David Gouldson had the ball in the net within two minutes, but the green flag was not raised as he was adjudged to have over carried the ball. St Brendan’s have been very slow to start in this campaign but on the big day

It is a splendid achievement to win back-to-back Hogan Cups

they asserted control from the start and were well deserving of their 10 points to 3 lead at half time. Both sides had goal opportunities in the second half but both goalkeepers kept clean sheets. St Peter’s did rally at the start of the second half with Barry O’Connor and Cathal Devereux most prominent as they set about cutting the deficit. However, St Brendan’s were up for the challenge with too many big guns and they won with eight points to spare. It is a splendid achievement to win back-to-back Hogan Cups. Congratulations to the St Brendan’s team as well as manager Garry McGrath and his backroom team. Killarney Celtic bid for final spot Killarney Celtic will play Sheriff YC in the FAI Junior Cup semi-final at Kilbrean Park, Mastergeeha, tomorrow. Kick-off is timed for 5pm. This is a very talented Dublin side having claimed three FAI Cups in the past five years. However, Killarney Celtic are on a great run, their best season ever in this competition and they are through to the semi-final on merit taking some great scalps on the way. Martin O ‘Neill, the Ireland manager has high hopes and high praise indeed for the Celtic heroes. “I think that Killarney Celtic have done absolutely fantastic in getting to the semi-final of the FAI Junior Cup.” Admission is €10 for adults and €5 for OAP’s and students. There will be shuttle buses to ferry fans to the Mastergeeha grounds, so why not go along. Killarney Celtic will give you good value and they can make it to the final with your encouragement. Kerry v Dublin Surprise, surprise it is going to be a Kerry v Dublin clash at Croke Park on Sunday next in the Division 1 final of the Allianz NFL. Kerry defeated Tyrone at the Fitzgerald Stadium in an entertaining game on Sunday last bringing its total to 8 points in the league. When other results fell the correct way for Kerry the Kingdom had the superior scoring average, thus qualifying for the final. Kerry Under 21 victory Kerry have been waiting for nine years to win the Munster Under 21 football crown and they really turned on the style inflicting a very heavy defeat on Cork in Páirc Uí Rinn. The heavy rain made conditions very difficult but it did not hinder Kerry who won 2-16 to 0-6. Of that six points for Cork they scored five points from frees and just a sin-

gle point from play. The standard of fielding and passing by the Kerry men was excellent despite the very slippery conditions. They were in control in all departments and Jack O’Connor was afforded the luxury of emptying his bench. Goalkeeper Shane Murphy had little to do and he was very lucky when Cork hit the uprights on two occasions, when goals seemed inevitable. All six Kerry backs did well as did the midfielders. Sean O’Shea, last year’s minor captain excelled and Michael O’Sullivan, the towering full forward also caught the eye. He is very mobile for a big man. Sets one thinking of the early days of Bomber Liston. Kerry: S Ryan (Rathmore); TL O’Sullivan (Dingle), J Foley (Ballydonoghue), B Sugrue (Renard); B Ó Beaglaoich (An Ghaeltacht), T O’Sullivan (Dingle), G White (Dr Crokes); A Barry (Na Gaeil), B Ó Seanacháin (Ballydonoghue); B Barrett (Ardfert), S O’Shea (Kenmare), M Flaherty (Dingle); K Spillane (Templenoe), M O’Sullivan (St Michael’s Foilmore), C Bambury (Dingle). Subs: J Morgan (Austin Stacks) for Sugrue (16 mins, injured); C Geaney (Dingle) for Bambury (HT); M Burns (Dr Crokes) for Barret (45); B O’Sullivan (Dingle) for Flaherty (46); C Coffey (Kerins O’Rahillys) for O’Sullivan (50, black card); J Kiely (Dr Crokes) for M O’Sullivan (52) Scorers for Kerry: S O’Shea (0-6, 0-3 frees, 0-1 ’45); K Spillane (0-5, 0-2 frees); C Geaney (1-2, 0-1 free); M O’Sullivan (1-1); T O’Sullivan, C Bambury (0-1 each)

Teammates

07.04.17

Ahead of Saturday’s FAI Junior Cup semi-final against Sheriff YC, Killarney Celtic left back Brendan Falvey tells Adam Moynihan all about his teammates

The Celtic team that defeated Janesboro in the quarterfinal. Thanks for talking to us, Brendan. No bother. Who gets the most nutmegs in training and games? Probably Wayne Sparling. He just gets the ball and takes fellas on so he obviously has a better chance of getting nutmegs than other fellas. He doesn’t pass like! Who’s the biggest moaner? In a good way I’ll say Smiley (John McDonagh) because he’s just moaning to get better things out of people. He’s very demanding of his teammates which is grand. He’s not a moaner in the “pain in the ****” way. Who spends the most time in the gym? I have to go Wayne again. I think he goes to the gym around nine times a week. Honestly. Chicken and rice, that’s his diet, and he goes to gym every day. I don’t think the rest of us do much but he makes up for it. Who’s the quickest? Cathal O’Shea, I suppose. Stephen McCarthy is fairly pacey too but Cathal is naturally fast and quick off the mark. I’ll give Cathal that nod. I have to give him something! And the slowest? Is that in terms of running or is it the slowest upstairs? [laughs] We’ll stick with running for now! I’ll say myself. I’m just back from injury so that’s my excuse. Do you listen to music in the dressing room? Who’s the DJ? A bit, yeah. Smiley and David Hayes look after it. A lot of rap. I don’t really like but it’s grand. It doesn’t bother me but the boys like it so whatever floats their boat. Who’s the most professional player? Peter McCarthy. He has an Ireland junior cap and he just has that little bit of professionalism about him.

Rugby News ...

Words: Liam Murphy

THIS weekend promised to be an action-packed weekend of rugby both locally and provincially and this turned out to be the case for sure. First up Munster took on Toulouse at Thomond Park in the second quarter final of the European Cup. Rassie’s men were very conscious of the threat

Brendan Falvey. Pics: Konrad Paprocki

He brings it to training and games and everything he does really. Who has the worst dress sense? Stephen McCarthy. He wears these bomber jackets and stuff and they don’t really go. But look, he’s young. He’ll learn in time. Who’s the toughest? Chris O’Leary. He’s fairly strong and he’s aggressive, a good hardy player. He’s also disciplined which is a good thing. To be hard and disciplined is difficult and he brings that to his game. Who’s the best athlete? I’m gonna go with Gary Keane because he glides around the field. He’ll give you 120 minutes if you need it. Most intelligent? Helmer (Stephen Hayes). He’ll be delighted I said that. I think he got some degree in Tralee IT last year or the year before. Who’s the teacher’s pet? Peter McCarthy. He’d be trying to take trainings and stuff like that. Who’s the best at Tinder? Block! He likes the old Tinder Tuesdays there in the Grand. Who’s the joker? Smiley. He’s always up for a laugh. Even if things aren’t going well he’ll brighten fellas’ moods. Who’s the players’ favourite player? I’ll say Roy Kelliher. He played every second game with Brian Kelly earlier on in the year but since Brian has gone back with Kerry, Roy has been immense for us. It’s good to get confidence from the keeper out and he always keeps us on our toes. Who’s the best singer? Even though he’s not part of the team, Frankie Roberts! [laughs] He’s always good for a chant. He might get going now the next day. Thanks Brendan. Best of luck. Thanks!

that Toulouse could pose, especially given the history between the two clubs in this competition and the fact that the French side brought their big guns to Limerick. Tickets were scarcer than hen’s teeth in the run up to the match and Fortress Thomond was out in force as the sun shone and everyone lucky enough to be there witnessed a cracking match. It was a quintessential Munster performance with tries by man of the match John Ryan, CJ Stander, Darren Sweetnam and Andrew Conway

Players’ Player: Goalkeeper Roy Kelliher.

Teacher’s Pet: Veteran striker Peter McCarthy.

to see the home side win 41-16 in the end. The talking point of the day with undoubtedly the ‘forward pass’ that went ignored when Toulouse scored their solitary try of the day. In the end it mattered little as the men now march on Dublin and towards a semi-final showdown against Saracens. Better get looking for those tickets now! Closer to home, our seniors took on Killorglin in the most important match of the year. At stake – a coveted promotion to Munster Junior LeagueDivision 2! A

game to match the Munster game for intensity and even more drama, the visitors were the better side on the day and won by the narrowest of margins – one point. Huge credit must go to our captain fantastic Ger Moynihan who took on the coach’s mantle this season and the hard work has really paid off. Next weekend the lads take on Fethard in the postponed Martin O’Sullivan Cup final in Ballincollig. It would be truly fantastic to add silverware to the hard fought promotion. Best of luck, lads!

Fossa Community Games

The Munster finals for the Community games took place in UL last Sunday with Fossa sending two teams to represent Kerry on the day. U13: Our U13 Boys Basketball team of Cian, Darragh, Darren, Rocco, Sean, Shea and Tom performed brilliantly on the day to win Gold and become Munster Champions in the process. In the semi final the boys beat Cork comfortably to set up a final against Limerick. The final wasn’t quite so easy on the boys or the nerves of their coach and supporters. The boys lead by 9 points going into the final quarter but Limerick made a great comeback and the lads dug deep to hold on for a 3 point win 30-27. Amanda O Brien has done a great job with the boys and Fossa are very proud of their achievements. U14: The U14 girls Spikeball team were the other team representing Fossa on Sunday and they did extremely well narrowly missing out on a place in the final. The girls showed all the fight and spirit that made them Kerry champions in a closely fought semi final but unfortunately they were beaten by 2 points after extra time against Limerick. Well done girls you did Fossa proud. The team were as follows Ellen, Tara, Holly (captain), Chelsea, Sophie and Ella. Thanks to David Kennedy and Liz Kennelly for looking after team on the day.

Killarney Athletic

Results - Denny Premier A Killarney Athletic 2-3 Dingle Bay Rovers. A setback at home today against Dingle for our senior A team. On Wednesday night we snook a draw with a last minute equaliser and today it was Dingle that scored in the last minutes to claim all 3 pts in a competitive affair. We never got going today and did well to pull 2 goals back through a Paudie Clifford penalty and Stam. Time for us to regroup for league run in over next few weeks. 300 Club: It is still not too late to sign up for the 300 club draw with the club offering the reduced rate of €100 for the remaining 10 draws of the year. Forms can be got from any committee member and we would ask all members to.

MEK FC

Match Report MEK 5 Killarney Athletic 3 A gutsy performance from our U13 team. An early Eddie Moroney goal gave us a good start against a strong Athletic team who created several good chances before equalizing later in the half to leave it 1-1 at half time. A strong start to the half by Athletic saw them take a 3-1 lead. From there on MEK took control and started to create and take some good goals. 2 good goals from Charlie Keating and further goals by Marc O’Sullivan Rouse and Eddie Moroney left MEK deserving winners on a 5-3 scoreline. Many thanks to Martin Muldoon and all at Killarney Athletic for a good tough but sporting game. We look forward to welcoming them to Fossa shortly. Also many thanks to referee Jonathan Leniston who did a great job. Matthew O’Connor had a great game in goal and was well protected by defenders Tadhg O’Sullivan, Conor Crowley, Darragh O Brien, Cian Fleming Con Lenihan and Stephen O Brien. Midfield really came into the game in the second half with strong performances from Marc O’Sullivan Rouse Leo Healy Mason Courtney and Sam Buckley. The dynamic duo of Eddie Moroney and Charlie Keating played really well and

Killarney Celtic

FAI Junior Cup Semi-Final! Killarney Celtic will play Sherriff FC of Dublin in Mastergeeha on Saturday, April 8th, at 5.00pm. This is an absolutely huge game for the club, the biggest in a lifetime, and support will be crucial. We had a fantastic quarter-final triumph over Janesboro, and the amount of people who got behind the club that made a real difference and made it a brilliant occasion – we are asking people to get behind us again. A big thank you to our neighbours Mastergeeha – occasional rivals on the field but great friends everywhere else – for facilitating the game. Special thanks to Konrad Paprocki for his brilliant photography, John O’Mahony and Eamon Mulvihill for their hard work in preparing the match programme, Ramona Keogh for her facebook ‘Seat On The Bus’ campaign which has not only help publicize and promote the game but brought our large diaspora together with one Celtic voice, and all the huge army of volunteers and supporters who have gotten behind the club for this great occasion. FAI Senior Cup - Killarney Celtic’s exploits in the FAI Junior Cup have given us entry to the Senior Cup, and we will play Boyle Celtic at home in Celtic Park on the weekend of April 30th. Results - Denny Premier A: Tralee Dynamos 2 Killarney Celtic 5. Dynamos were able to take a point off us on our own ground but weren’t able to hold out against an on-fire Celtic this time out, with Wayne Sparling (2), Pa McGrath, Chris O’Leary, and an unlucky own goal giving us a comfortable win. Hopefully a good omen for Saturday’s Junior Cup semi-final! Fixtures FAI JUNIOR CUP SEMI-FINAL: KILLARNEY CELTIC V SHERRIFF FC, MASTERGEEHA, SATURDAY, 5.00PM U16 Kerry Cup: Killarney Celtic away to Listowel Celtic B, Saturday, 11.45am U11: Killarney Celtic at home to Mastergeeha, TBC.

Killarney RFC

U 14‘s: Two weeks after winning the west muster league the Killarney u14 stepped back onto the field in the West Munster cup semi final v tralee u14. The first half saw Killarney assert their dominance with tries from Tomas Clifford and Odeniz Koyun. Both tries were converted - the first by Donnacha Grealy and the second by Peter Walsh. The second half was a tough affair with Tralee continuing to test the Killarney defence. Tralee scored a try midway in the second half and Killarney from then on ensured that the door was firmly shut. The semi final win ensures that this team get the reward of contesting a cup final. The continued positive support of parents is always welcome and necessary. The next game will be our last game of the season - let’s make it a season to remember for ever. U 16’s: Killarney U16s played Listowel in the final of the U16 KCL Shield, in Tralee on Sunday, for their last game of the season, This was to be the fifth meeting between the two sides with Killarney winning three of the previous four matches, this season. As has been the case all year Killarney started the game with too little aggression and could only repel Listowels pack for so long before conceding to go down 7-0 after 12 minutes. Killarney finally attacked out wide in the second half and from a number of penalties eventually got the score (Captain Richard Wallace) they needed in the corner to trail by 14 points to 5, with 20 minutes to go, a bit of belief came into Killarney game and again a fantastic line break saw center Michael Casey score under the posts to leave the score poised at 14-12 to Listowel with about 12 minutes remaining, Listowel had the greater reserve on the bench and closed out the game with two minutes to go, winning the match by 19 points to 12. This group of Killarney players are definitely heading in the right direction, and have improved at each game, best of luck to the boys moving up to U18 ‘s next season and hopefully the players who will be U16 ‘ s again can build on this fantastic season. Many thanks to all those parents who contributed in so many ways and we look forward to next season to improve further. A huge thanks to Tom Campbell for his unstinting hard work right across the season. Seniors: Our Seniors were in action against Killorglin in the biggest game of the year for the lads with promotion to Division 2 the prize at stake. Having recently beaten Killorglin on the last regular league game of the year to cost them promotion, a tough encounter was always on the cards. Ger Moynihan’s charges took nothing for granted as they made the short trip to Ballymalis in Listry and the match was played in near perfect conditions. The action was to and fro for the first half with Killorglin receiving a sin bin in and the scores read 3 points each at half time. In a game of two halves as the saying goes, the second half lived

07.04.17 up to all expectations as Ger Moynihan crossed the whitewash for the visitors try with around ten minutesgone in the half. Paudie Sheahan added to his earlier penalty to make the scores 3 - 10 on the 50 minute mark. Killorglin scored an unconverted try within a few minutes to stay in touch and Paudie added two more penalties and Killorglin earned another yellow card for foul play. However with a few minutes to go, the home side scored a breakaway try and converted it to leave the scores at 15 points to 16. And this is how it ended with the visitors winning the second promotion spot after a hard fought campaign. Well done to all the lads with the likes of Ger Moynihan, Paul O’Sullivan, Paudie Sheahan standing out on what was an epic team performance. Next Sunday the lads will take on Fethard in Rathcooney (Old Christian’s Pitch), Glanmire in the Martin O’Sullivan Cup Final. Best of luck to the lads, lets bring this elusive trophy home to Aghadoe!!

Under 16 The Amber team made the short trip out to Fossa for their first competitive game of the year. The Crokes men played some fabulous football in spells but unfortunately finished on the wrong side of a 2-4 to 4-10 scoreline. The Black teams opening game was called off and will be re-scheduled for a later date. Under 14 Girls Round 1 League took place on Saturday April 1st in Fossa Pitch at 5pm Dr Crokes were on the back foot early on, 3 points in arrears but got going and were ahead at half time by 2-1 to 0-5 with a goal and a point by Jade Potts and a point by Sarah Macmahon followed by a another goal by Kate O Donoghue. This was a tough physical battle and several key Crokes players picked up knocks but recovered to soldier on in the 2nd half. Dr Crokes welcomed new players who had made the jump from under 12 and by and large the whole panel of 21 played well especially those who came on as Substitutes namely Niamh O Donoghue, Ava Mcarthy, Aideen Mullen, Amber O Sullivan and Emma Fleming. East Kerry Junior League Rd2 Dr Crokes v Gneeveguilla 18/04/17 at 6.45 Gneeveguilla hosted Listry on Sunday in a back game of the East Kerry Super league. Listry got off to the better start kicking 3 unanswered points inside the first 10 minutes. Gneeveguilla eventually opened the scoring trough Corneilus Buckley and further scores from DJ O Connor and Padraig O Sullivan brought Gneeveguilla back in the game. Listry had keeper S Ahern to thank for a fine one on one save against Padraig O Sullivan just before half time to leave them leading 0-06 to 0-04 at the interval. The second half was played a quicker pace as Gneeveguilla found scores easier to come by. Quick ball by Jamie Brosnan and Darren Brosnan allowed Fergus Mcaullife and DJ pick off scores. Listry stayed in front with excellent free taking from Buckley and in the end both teams settled for a draw Gneeveguilla , 0-11 Listry 0-11.

Killarney Legion

SUPERLEAGUE Killarney Legion 3-11 Currow 1-8 Another steady performance by the seniors saw them get the better of a competitive Currow side in Derreen. Despite an early Tom Moriarty goal the visitors struck by for a goal of their own and matched the home side for most of the first half. However the Legion defence once again showed strongly and with David Gleeson not putting a ball astray from kickouts the last 10 minutes of the first half saw a steady stream of points from the Legion forwards to leave the halftime score Legion 1-8 Currow 1-2. Just as in the game against Kenmare the week before the Legion had to face into a strong wind but apart from a short spell they steadily improved and were rewarded with another Tom Moriarty goal & with Jack O Neill excelling at midfield the supply of good ball led to Colm Ó Cuiv cleverly flicking to the

They will play Glenflesk in Fossa in the last round on the 18th April at 6.30pm. Under 16 East Kerry League In our first competitive game of the season we played Dr Crokes in the East Kerry league and it certainly was a game of two halves. At half time we found ourselves trailing, 2-04 to 2 points. It was a combination of a bad start, a lot of turnovers and some poor decision making in front of goal. The half time team talk was very frank and a couple of positional switches were made at the start of the 2nd half. An early goal put a different complexion on the game. Eoin Talbot started to dominate around the middle, ably assisted by Killian Buckley. A brace of goals by Emmett O’Shea followed and within 15 minutes of the restart we found ourselves up a few points and never looked back. Confidence oozed through the team at this stage and we finished the second half without conceding a score, largely down to some fine defending from Ruairi Doyle, Colm Talbot and Richard Wallace. Final score Fossa 4-09, Dr Crokes B 2-04. Next up we are away to Spa on Monday April 3rd. Ladies Football: Hard luck to our Fossa players, Anna Clifford and Maud Kelly who were on the Kerry U-16 team which were very unlucky to lose to Tipperary by 1 point on Saturday. They are two fantastic players who have a huge future ahead of them and no doubt will have much better days ahead.
