A Status Yellow High Temperature warning has been issued by Met Éireann for the whole country which could see temperatures potentially reach 30 degrees Celsius over the weekend. While the county is enjoying the much needed sunshine, many groups are advising caution including limiting their time outside to avoid serious sunburn, the risk of water related incidents, and to keep an eye on the vulnerable in the community, while the National Parks and Wildlife Service is appealing to the public about the risks of fires and the use of BBQs in Killarney National Park.

"Members of the public intending to visit National Parks and Nature Reserves are reminded to adhere to regulations regarding the lighting of fires," the NPWS "Itsaid.is an offence under the Wildlife Act 1976 to light of any fire which causes or is likely to cause the burning of any vegetation within one mile (1.6km) of a woodland or nature reserve, and those doing so may face prosecution. The use of BBQs or open fires is strictly prohibited."

With temperatures set to soar up to 29 degrees in the coming days, sun seekers sizzling in the heat are being urged to be cautious to avoid heat stress, dehydration and severe sunburn.

Overnight water restrictions could continue over the weekend due to the country's heatwave. On Wednesday night, Irish Water imposed a water restriction in the Breanlee, Mid-Kerry, and Milltown Water Supply Schemes, between 11pm and 7am. Barleymount, Knockavota, Milltown and Aghadoe, along with some surrounding areas, were affected also. Killorglin town centre which is in the throes of Puck Fair, was not affected, although some outlying areas might be.

Public asked to conserve water

The NPWS also appealed to the public to be conscious of Emergency Service access in local beauty spots. "Vehicles must not be parked at site entrances or impede emergency vehicle access and may be towed away if causing an Conservationobstruction."Rangers and other NPWS staff will be monitoring and patrolling the network of sites over the coming days and remain in close liaison with the Gardaí and the Fire Service. Aerial surveillance involving NPWS staff will be monitoring from helicopters at some of the National Parks. SAFETY APPEAL Kerry County Council also issued a safety "Whenappeal. outside, please use an appropriate sunscreen, and drink plenty of water to keep hydrated. For those planning to head to the beach with your family over the weekend, please follow the swim safely advice, swim only in areas that are covered by lifeguards, never go out of your depth, never swim alone and never let children swim alone." As temperatures spike, older people and those with underlying health conditions can be particularly vulnerable at this time, ALONE, the organisation which supports older people to age at home, advised. “We are reminding older people to take care and exercise caution in the heat," Seán Moynihan, CEO of ALONE, said. "Heat exhaustion and heat stroke can be very harmful to over 65s. It is important to stay cool, drink plenty of water and to wear sunscreen and a hat. We are used to extreme weather in winter but extreme summer weather can cause serious problems also.”

Organisers of Puck Fair removed King Puck from his platform yesterday (Thursday) to protect the wild mountain goat - as temperatures hit 29 degrees. As part of the fair’s tradition, a wild mountain goat presides over Killorglin town from his tall platform over the course of the three days. Organisers employ a dedicated vet to look after the goat and a team of experienced goat handlers are also on duty for the duration of the festival. There is also a temperature monitoring device on the platform. The vet and handlers decided it was safer for the goat to be removed from the platform for the rest of the day. Spokesperson Marcella O’Connor told the Killarney Advertiser that the goat was moved into the shade to keep him “Thecool. handlers were monitoring him in case it got too hot. The decision was made to take him down, and the vet says he is happy.” A decision will be made today (Friday) on the goat’s return to the platform for the final day of the fair.

Safety warnings issued as temperatures expected to soar

According to Met Eireann's warning yesterday (Thursday) which kicks in from today (Friday) until Sunday, conditions are set to be very warm or hot today and tomorrow (Saturday) with maximum temperatures generally of 27 to 29 degrees and locally higher. They said it will also be warm overnight with minimum temperatures generally around 15 degrees.

“Irish Water understands the inconvenience of these restrictions on the people in Breanlee, Barleymount, Knockavota, Milltown, and Aghadoe areas, but it is necessary to maintain reservoir levels and ensure a sufficient water supply to homes and businesses during normal working hours,” Oliver Harney of Irish Water said. “We would ask the public to continue to conserve water over the coming days. It can sometimes be difficult to know where to start, but even small changes can make a significant difference – and we can all play our part. By reducing the water used, for example turning off the hose and avoiding power washing, we can all help ensure there is enough water for everyone as we go through the rest of the summer.”

The restrictions on these schemes are required to give the reservoirs time to replenish and are necessary during this off-peak time as there is a possibility that there could be insufficient water supply to homes and businesses during daytime hours without some measures being put in Irishplace.Water and Kerry County Council are closely monitoring water levels in a number of areas in the county and taking remedial measures to maintain normal supplies, however, the public is still being asked to assist by taking some simple steps to reduce their water use.

Killarney Valley AC will be putting on a show to mark the official opening of their state-of-the-art facilities - and you’re invited.

COVID has delayed the milestone event until now but when the progressive club finally get to cut the ribbon at their new grounds alongside St Brendan’s College, some of the club’s top athletes will be there to showcase their talents. The opening, which will take place on Saturday, August 27 at 3.30pm, offers locals a fantastic opportunity to see international athletes like high jumper Jordan Lee and sprinter Sarah Leahy up close. “We are delighted to invite all to attend and celebrate at the long-awaited official opening of the Killarney Valley AC Arena,” club chairperson Jerry Griffin said. “40 years ago, moves were made to draw attention to the desire for such a facility to be built. Honorary Club President of Killarney Valley AC Eileen Switzer was to the fore. Then, 10 years ago, a voluntary community group was formed. Many hurdles and obstacles had to be crossed but the volunteers continue to do so in Griffinstyle.” and Cathal O’Brien spearheaded the initial efforts and the co-operation of St Brendan’s College principal Seán Coffey was key. “Site maps and drawing proposals were provided by the community group and were brought to then Bishop Bill Murphy’s attention for consideration,” Griffin

Gneeveguilla road closed after culvert collapses

OFFICIAL OPENING: The official opening of the Killarney Valley Athletics Arena will take place on Saturday, August 27.

“Toexplained.thegreat credit of Bishop Murphy and current Bishop Ray Browne on behalf of the diocese, the land was provided. “The projected cost in 2013 was €275,000 but the final price came in at €500,000. It costs close on €30,000 per annum to keep the facility sustainable and this requires planning and the goodwill from the volunteers.”

Cllr Brendan Cronin is calling on Kerry County Council and Irish Water to offer free parking at the Rock Road car park for the duration of works in the O’Kellys Villas estate. Irish Water are due to commence essential water mains replacement in the next week or two – they have been working in surrounding streets since mid-July. Residential parking is already difficult in O’Kellys Villas and surrounding the estate as a result of narrow streets. With the arrival of plant machinery in the area in the next few days parking will be even more difficult for residents. Cllr Cronin has sought assurances from the local authority and the utility company that residents will be accommodated during the works. “It would be a sign of goodwill towards the residents and it would also allow Irish Water the chance to get the work done unhindered,” Cllr Cronin told the Killarney Advertiser. “It is all about cooperation.”

DIVERSIONS Diversions will be as follows and will be clearly signposted. Traffic travelling from Scartaglin towards Gneeveguilla via Knockrower, continue on the R577 at Knockrower West Cross until Knocknaboul Cross, turn right onto the L-2032 towards Tooreencahill Cross, turn right onto the L-3013 at Tooreencahill Cross towards Gullane Cross and onto the L-3009. For over a decade these shows have captivated audiences in Galway and Mayo and this marks the first time they have travelled outside the western province. Well known promoter, Tom Kelly from Ballina, who was manager of Brendan Grace for 27 years, and who also promotes the concerts of Johnny McEvoy, Mike Denver, Isla Grant, Dan McCabe and others, noticed the market for these country shows in recent years. “The response of audiences to the Michael Commins Shows in the Salthill and Clayton Hotels in Galway and also in Claremorris and Westport has been phenomenal and I realised right away that these shows would have huge appeal outside the province," Tom Kelly said. “Where better a place to start outside of Connacht than in the famous Gleneagle INEC, the heart of Irish tourism and a huge venue for Country Music down through the years. Big differences in fuel prices nationally SEAN MORIARTY car

THE KILLARNEY ADVERTISER SAYS Someone somewhere is having a laugh at our expense. In last week’s column I highlighted the greed of the big oil companies after they posted record profits, and questioned the Government’s record haul of tax funds in the first six months of the Yetyear.despite these figures, there seems to be no reduction at the pumps. To make matters worse, there is a huge difference in fuel costs from one end of the country to the next. Now I am no petrol station operator, and I don’t fully know everything it takes to run a profitable business in this However, sector. I do know that wholesale fuel comes from the one source before being sold to the various petrol companies in Ireland and then sold again to the station operators, let they be big chains or independent traders. So, I find it very hard to comprehend that there is a vast difference in the cost of fuel from one end of the country to the Yesterdaynext. afternoon (Thursday), watchdog website pumps.ie tells us that the cheapest fuel in the country is available at the Emo Station in Rathcormac, County Cork. Petrol there costs 175.9 cents per litre. The cheapest, according to the website, in the Killarney area, is 195.9 cents per litre of petrol. That is a vast difference between two petrol stations that are little over 100 kilometres apart. Pumps.ie rely on members of the public to update prices but both examples cited were last updated on Wednesday of this week - meaning they are as upto-date as Regardless, possible.thisisa huge difference so questions need to be asked. You really don’t want to know the most expensive petrol station in the locality – the best advice is shop around as it seems the greed I wrote about last week is not just an international issue.

The growing club needs new winter training facilities for its men’s, ladies and juvenile teams. “We found that our current pitch was getting badly cut up in the winter and autumn and felt this new all-weather was the way to go,” club chairman, Neil Doherty, told the Killarney Advertiser. “We started selling this week at Puck and so far the response has been very Ticketgood.”will remain on sale until next year with a draw date set for around Easter time.

On Friday last, An Taoiseach, Micheál Martin was in Tarbert where a number of eagles were released into the wild as part of a project to re-establish a population of this iconic species in Ireland. This was followed by a further release on Tuesday in Killarney National Park by the Minister of State for Heritage, Malcolm Noonan, TD, accompanied by the Norwegian Ambassador, Mari Skåre. Also in attendance were a group of visiting Norwegians who were responsible for the collection of the eagle nestlings in Norway earlier this year. These white-tailed Eagle chicks arrived in Kerry Airport last month as part of a longterm wildlife reintroduction project. The four eagle chicks brought to Killarney National Park have been held in special aviaries in a remote part of the Park where they have been carefully looked after by National Parks and Wildlife Service staff. “It has been wonderful to watch the release of the magnificent White Tail Eagles collected in Norway. The friendship between the people of Norway and the people of Ireland runs deep. The eagles we see fly free and strong in their natural habitat here today are spreading their wings as a result of the voluntary work of so many,” said Ambassador Skåre. “Biodiversity is essential for all life on Earth. Yet we are seeing an extremely rapid loss of species world-wide. Through joint efforts we can halt this Asdecline.”inprevious years, the young eagles were collected under licence in Norway by the Norwegian Institute for Nature Research (NINA) and co-workers. All the birds were fitted with satellite tags in Ireland to enable their progress to be followed and their integration into the existing Irish breeding population monOneitored.of the first pairs of White-tailed Eagles to breed in Ireland was in Killarney National Park in 2013 and the pair have remained in the Park since, once again fledging a chick this year. Their nest is in a tree on an inaccessible cliff, but visitors may be lucky and catch a glimpse of the eagles soaring over the mountains or catching fish in one of the Park’s many Aslakes.they mature, these chicks will join and strengthen the small Irish breeding population that has become established since the reintroduction programme began in 2007. So far, 47 young eagles from Norway have been released over the last two years.

Kerry's stunning scenery provided a beautiful backdrop for ITV series 'The Car Years' which was viewed by over one million British people this week. Images of the county and the Wild Atlantic Way were beamed into their homes in the new season of the popular TV series when episodes one and two aired on ITV4 on Tuesday evening. The eight-part series was filmed entirely along the Wild Atlantic Way and was supported by Tourism Ireland. Over the eight episodes – which focus on eight classic motoring years – the show’s presenters, Vicki Butler-Henderson and Alex Riley, each select a car that they believe is worthy of being crowned the best classic car of that particular year.

Publicity and broadcasts like this are a key element of Tourism Ireland’s programme of activity, to encourage travellers in Britain, and elsewhere around the world, to put Ireland on their holiday wish-list, she added.

Viewers saw the classic cars being put through their paces on some of the most picturesque driving routes along the Wild Atlantic Way – including the Ring of Kerry and the Conor Pass while Vicki and Alex visit the Kilgarvan Motor Museum. “Tourism Ireland was delighted to support the production of the latest series of 'The Car Years'," Julie Wakley, Tourism Ireland’s Head of Great Britain, said. "It’s a great way to shine a spotlight on the Wild Atlantic Way – highlighting our picturesque driving routes and spectacular scenery. It will help ensure that Ireland stays front-of-mind with prospective visitors and remind viewers across Britain that the Wild Atlantic Way is a great choice for a driving holiday.”

Construction work on the proposed upgrade to the road from Killorglin's Laune Bridge to the FEXCO Hub on the Killarney road could commence in 2024 - with a completion date of 2025 subject to the necessary approvals. This follows a recent Notice of Motion by Fianna Fáil Councillor, Michael Cahill. “I am delighted that this road upgrade is progressing, if a little slower than we initially expected. This is a large complex project which requires topographical and other investigative surveys, land acquisition, approvals from both An Bórd Pleanála and Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) before a tendering process can begin,” Councillor Cahill “Isaid.have battled for many years on behalf of the residents who live along this extremely dangerous stretch of roadway and it is gratifying that there is at last, light at the end of the tunnel. The Killarney road residents deserve a new road, footpath and cycleway.”

Ukrainian team take part in 10km Killarney Run

Sereda from Chernihiv says that she participated in marathons and races as a volunteer in Ukraine, helping with organisation including distribution of food and water. She ran for herself, mostly in the park. Yaryna decided to take part in the race in Killarney because she realised that she had wanted to do it for a long time, but had always put it off for later. With the beginning of the war, she realised that life is short and you have to use all the opportunities here and now. "My impressions from the race are incredible, I am proud of myself and everyone who took part. This is an opportunity to challenge yourself," says Yaryna. Alex Ashkolunenko took the initiative and created branded T-Shirts for the mini team. Alex completed the race distance with his girlfriend Julia Kolesnyk. "We are both from Odessa. He has been in Ireland for four months." They had never run such distances before, but Ireland is exciting, you want to run here! Initially, the idea was simply to participate. Then they decided to assemble a small Ukrainian team. "A cool atmosphere awaited us at the race, it was very nice to be a part of this grand event," says Alex. Other Ukrainians joined the support group of our runners. Ukrainian flags and joyful shouts in their native language at the finish line added strength and emotions to the runners.

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS

3. Find a workout routine you enjoy: If you dread your workouts, it’s going to be very difficult to stay motivated. However, if you find an exercise routine that you enjoy, you’ll be more likely to stick with it. There are so many different types of workouts out there, so take some time to experiment and find one that fits your needs and interests. I feel a key facet many of us in the health and fitness industry miss regularly is making sure people are always engaged and challenged, so it remains fun to work out!

If your goal is too lofty, you may find yourself getting discouraged when you don’t see results as quickly as you’d like. If you have enough PRSI contributions, you will get a weekly payment of €250 per week. Some employers will top-up this payment, but they don’t have to. Can my employer refuse my application for Parent’s Leave? Your employer can only refuse Parent’s Leave if you are not entitled to it. However, your employer can postpone your Parent’s Leave for up to 12 weeks, for the following reasons: • Seasonal variations in the volume of work

4. Reward yourself: This one sounds a little weird, but for some, it can really work. One way to stay motivated is to reward yourself after setting a goal and reaching it. Whether it’s your favourite snack or a new piece of workout gear, treating yourself to something special can help keep you on track.

• The nature of your duties • The number of other employees also taking Parent’s Leave If you need further information about any of the issues raised here or you have other questions, you can call a member of the local Citizens Information Service in Kerry on 0818 07 7860. 5. Get enough sleep: This is the one thing we all hear that's drilled into our brains - but for good reason! It’s important to get enough sleep when you’re trying to stay fit and healthy. When you’re well-rested, you’ll have more energy for your workouts and you’ll be less likely to skip them. So make sure to get plenty of rest each night! Following these tips can help you stay motivated to workout, even when it feels like a struggle. Just remember to be patient, set realistic goals, and find an exercise routine that you enjoy. With a little effort, you can reach your fitness goals in no time!

The 22nd Tour de Munster charity cycle came to a thrilling end on Sunday as cyclists tackled St Patrick’s Hill in Cork City, driven on by the cheers of supporters. First to conquer the uphill battle were two sporting legends, long term supporter of the Tour and cycling great Sean Kelly along with world-renowned rower Gary O’Donovan, completing his first Tour de OverMunster.100 amateur cyclists completed this year’s Tour, which saw them clock up over 600km across four days visiting some of Munster's most iconic towns and villages in their bid to raise vital funds for the Munster branches of Down Syndrome Ireland. For the 13th year, Down Syndrome Ireland joined the Tour as its main beneficiary. Over the previous 21 years, Tour de Munster has raised a staggering €3.9 million for its charity partners, with over €3.5 million alone for Down Syndrome Ireland’s Munster branches. These funds allow Down Syndrome Ireland to provide vital supports and services to members of its Munster branches. Setting out from Cork’s historic English Market, the Tour made its way to Waterford, Tipperary, Limerick, Clare and Kerry. Throughout the Tour, cyclists had the opportunity to meet many members of Down Syndrome Ireland’s Munster branches who benefit so greatly by the funds Founderraised.ofTour de Munster, Paul Sheridan, congratulated and thanked all those who participated in this year’s Tour. “It has been an incredible journey and I am extremely grateful to all those who have participated in the 22nd edition of the Tour," he said. “We have received an enormous amount of support and such a warm welcome over the last four days across the many towns, cities and villages that we have visited. She has been one of the best female tennis players in the world for two decades but this week it was time for Serena Williams to call a halt on her long career. This week, as the 23-time grand-slam champion won her first singles match for more than a year Williams revealed in Vogue Magazine that she has decided to call time on her career. "I’ve been reluctant to admit that I have to move on from playing tennis," the 40-year-old said. "It’s like a taboo topic. It comes up, and I start to cry. I think the only person I’ve really gone there with is my therapist. I have never liked the word retirement, it doesn’t feel like a modern word to me. I’ve been thinking of this as a transition, but I want to be sensitive about how I use that word, which means something very specific and important to a community of people. Maybe the best word to describe what I’m up to is evolution. I’m here to tell you that I’m evolving away from tennis, toward other things that are important to me. A few years ago I quietly started Serena Ventures, a venture capital firm. Soon after that, I started a family. I want to grow that family." Many tributes were paid to the outstanding sportswoman since the news was Billierevealed.JeanKing, the former women’s world No 1, the winner of 12 grand slam singles titles, including six at Wimbledon said that “when Serena steps away from tennis, she will leave as the sport’s greatest Formerplayer”.men’s world No 1, John McEnroe, said that Serena "should do whatever she wants". "She’s an icon. Her place in American society has gone to a place where she deserves it after everything she’s accomplished, everything she’s done. I don’t know the answer whether she wants to play again, I don’t think she needs to play again. She’s in that level where Michael Jordan, LeBron James and Tom Brady are. She’s like one of the all-time greatest athletes in the history of any sport – male or female. It seems to be a great place in her life. She’s added a lot."

Artist and food activist Lisa Fingleton plans the unusual action as she will eat only food grown in Ireland for the entire Thatmonth.means no sugar, lemons, olive oil, or coffee with the challenge designed to highlight issues with Irish food security. In the seven years since Lisa founded the 30-Day Local Food Challenge, food supply chains have been hit by a succession of market shocks highlighting Lisa’s concerns with increasing urgency. From seed shortages caused by Brexit to the global market shock of COVID-19 to potential shortages caused by the ongoing war in Ukraine, to the recent conversation about the need to reduce the Irish National Herd in line with carbon emissions targets, Lisa says there has never been a more important time to talk about Irish food security. “This year in particular in Europe we are seeing the impact of war on food and the global reliance on Ukraine as an important wheat producer,” said the former Kerry County Council Artist in Residence who lives in Ballybunion. "This has shown us more than ever just how fragile our food systems are. We need to focus on building sustainable and resilient food systems on the island of Ireland. This year we are encouraging people to do one local meal a day so they can make it really simple and have Irish porridge for breakfast or really elaborate with a meal grown in your own garden."

The O’Riada’s Bar and Restaurant-based event raised money for the nearby Glanageenty Walkways and followed a new for 2022 route via Ballymac, Raemore, Knocknagoshel, Brosna, and Mount Eagle before the finish line in the Mart Yard in GerardCastleisland.Healy from Knockysheehan, Headford, Killarney had the oldest cars on the run. He has owned his 1948 Jaguar Mark 4 saloon for the last seven years. “This car was manufactured in Coventry after World War Two,” he said. “And it was then shipped to Ireland in kit form to avoid high import duty on complete cars. It was reassembled in Dublin and painted emerald green. This is a Sligo car, the first owner was a Miss Teresa Ferry, it was very unusual for a lady to own a car in those days." The car was then sold to a vicar and then a soldier before, somehow, ending up in The Netherlands. There it underwent a full restoration in 1999. Gerard bought the car from a restorer called Roberto Verboon. “I was proud to bring the car back to Ireland,” he added. Thanks to generous support from local businesses and sponsors including O’Riada’s and BG Motors over €500 worth of spot prizes were handed out on the day. Listry’s Tony and Kay Darmody were prize winners after judges were impressed with their Hillman Minx ConvertGeorgeible. Public invited to have their say on Local Property Tax rate Édaein enjoyed a relaxing trip ahead of Rose Festival appearance

Kerry County Council has commenced a period of public consultation on the Local Adjustment Factor for the Local Property Tax rate for 2023. The Finance (Local Property Tax) Act, 2012, makes specific provision that elected members of a local authority may pass a formal resolution to vary the basic rate of the Local Property Tax for their administrative area by a percentage known as the Local Adjustment Factor. At the meeting set by Kerry County Council to consider this matter, the members may set a Local Adjustment Factor within the range of plus or minus 15% of the basic rate, or may decide not to adjust the basic rate. The play follows the efforts of Dicky Mick Dicky O'Connor to make matches for the lonely and lovelorn. Using his inimitable way with words and his one sense of “devilment” and wit, Keane delves into the longings, hungers, fears and foibles of this collection of lonely country people and creates a marvellously colourful world, taking us back to a simpler time, when phones were few and far between and the only web was one left behind by spiders. Norma Sheahan loved by audiences from her roles in The Clinic, Bridget and Eamon and Moone Boy, is the only other actress apart from Vanessa Redgrave to have sold out the Gaiety Theatre in a one woman show (not once, but twice) in her role as Willy Russell’s Shirley Valentine which has just completed an enormously successful national tour. The production is directed by Michael Scott. Tickets from €27.90 are on sale now from www.inec.ie and www.ticketmaster.ie.

They say history doesn’t repeat itself, but it often rhymes - at this point however, even the rhyming has stopped. The pandemic policy changes have left us with skewed data figures, manipulated comp stats and a remarkably unfamiliar backdrop resulting in immeasurable uncertainty amongst investors across the Duringglobe. times like this, it is best to break complex problems down to their simplest forms and concentrate solely on the most crucial variables. And the most crucial variables in this case are inflation and Fed policy. An infinite number of potential outcomes are possible over the coming months, but all will be derived based on the aggressiveness of future Fed adjustments and the persistence of inflation. THERE WILL ALWAYS BE RISK There is no perfect scenario here. The inflation we are experiencing is the by-product of an overheating economy. The cumulative net worth of US Households is now almost $150 Trillion, $80 Trillion more than it was 10 years ago. The US labour market currently boasts two jobs for every one person looking for work, and corporate earnings jumped 35% in 2021, the largest increase since Simply1950. put, there is more money in the system than ever before. The supply side issues have been well documented, but if inflation is to be quelled, then the demand side of the equation needs to be solved.

This is where the Fed’s tightening cycle comes in. The Fed cannot improve supply issues, but they can negatively impact demand by dampening the labour market and decreasing the amount of capital in the systems through higher interest rates. This tighter monetary policy is expected to bring inflation under control, but as the Fed increases the speed of rate hikes, the odds of economic contraction also Inincrease.short, the goldilocks scenario of a gradual decline in inflation while maintaining labour market strength, household wealth and corporate profits, remains a pipe dream. To strip inflation out of the system, a period of economic contraction is a necessary evil.

JUMPING BACK IN Before declaring an all-clear for stocks, investors need to believe we are at the peak of policy tightening and inflationary Certainly, pressure. we are seeing signs of improvement from an inflationary standpoint. For example, wheat prices are now lower than at the beginning of the war in Ukraine - another showcase of the unpredictability of markets. With that said, one crucial paradox remains. Investors want interest rates to fall so stocks can rise, but any fall in interest rates is unlikely if stocks rally, somewhat capping the recent upside. MAKE A PLAN As always, I encourage a long-term focus. Investors will be better served focusing on the bull market opportunity on the other side rather than overemphasising what may be left in the bear market. Those looking to take advantage of any potential upside need to get their house in order. You need to take the time to develop a clear picture of what your allocation will look like, create a watchlist of preferred names and know your entry Scramblingpoints. together a plan after the fact is a sure-fire way to ensure you miss the very opportunity you were trying to capture. Advice for charging your electric vehicle at home

on the type of EV you have, this will determine what type of EV home charger you will need. Prices for chargers can vary depending on whether or not your car is a plug-in hybrid or a fully electric vehicle. There are two types of chargers – level 1 and level 2. Level 2 provides faster charging, but it often requires a different power outlet that you may not have in your home. Decide which one you would prefer – either a plug solution or a charger installed by your electrician. Given there are a number of companies in Ireland that provide home charger installation, you should choose one that is registered with Safe Electric Ireland. These Registered Electrical Contractors (REC) will be able to advise you on the best charger for your car and home. There is a vast array of EV home chargers on the market, so do your research before buying one. FUNDRAISER: Tureencahill Active Retirement Group raised €400 for Kerry Friends of Motor Neurone Association during their recent annual flag day.

Berkhamsted Football Club has announced that a new six-year sponsorship deal has been agreed with Glencar Construction, one which includes re-naming the club’s stadium from Broadwater to The Glencar Community Stadium. Glencar Construction was founded by Eddie McGillycuddy and his McLaren Group colleague Chris Gleave in 2016. It has enjoyed unprecedented growth and last March the Financial Times ranked the construction company as the fourth fastest-growing firm in Europe. Despite its success the company has always supported local community projects both at home and abroad. “Glencar is committed to investing in the communities in which we are present and helping the future generation. Our ethos is firmly aligned to that of the club and developing opportunities for young people throughout the community,” said a company statement. “We see our role over the next few years, as well as being supporters, as an active and supportive partner working in close co-operation with the club and making some much needed investment across multiple Berkhamstedareas.”Football Club finished second in the Southern League Division One Central championship last season.

Fat dissolving injections target stubborn areas At 5.30pm, €20

London-based Kerry firm supports English soccer team

Pictured is chairperson Breda Murphy and Treasurer Nora Hickey presenting a cheque to Nora Murphy Secretary of Kerry Friends of Motor Neurone with members of Tureencahill Active Retired Group.

The English soccer championship got underway last weekend and Kerry fans may have a new team to support.

It may sound too good to be true but fat dissolving injections are as effective as the name suggests. They are administered by our in-house Dr. Micheal Flynn who has been attending our salon for the past 10 years. It is the double chin and neck area that is treated and is suitable for both men and women. If you haven't heard of fat dissolving, it is a very popular and relatively new treatment that is used to target stubborn pockets of fat on the jaw line and chin area. The injection dissolves and eliminates fat cells in a safe and effective way, making it perfect for dealing with stubborn fat that simply won't budge with exercise. The main ingredient is a fat dissolving substance sodium deoxycholate, which is found naturally in the body. This is injected into the treatment area which over time will destroy the fat cells. These are then removed from the body by its own lymphatic system, a complex network that rids the body of unwanted toxins and waste. It is important to understand that fat dissolving injections are not a weight loss treatment. The injections should only be used on people who are a healthy size or carrying a little extra weight. It's most effective on the pockets of fat stored under the jawline, known as the double chin, a migration of fat cells from the cheeks to the jaw line. The injections work at a slow pace. It can take serval weeks for full results, but once it's gone, it's gone. The results are permanent, once you don't gain a massive amount of weight. The next clinic is Monday August 22. To book an appointment or more information, call Jill on 064 6632966.

Our sincere thanks to Fr. Niall Howard for his guidance and prayers and for leading the beautiful personal funeral mass for our father. Your visits to Dad during his final months were a great comfort and joy to him during his time of grief following our Mam’s death and after a marriage of over 60 Manyyears.thanks to the sacristan, Tadhg, and to our singer Máire and organist Anita, for their very moving musical additions to the mass. To our dear friends, neighbours, relatives and colleagues who graciously lined St. Mary’s Cathedral driveway and the streets of Killarney to pay their respects and to those who joined the mass on-line. We were deeply touched and it meant so much to us at this time. Many thanks to those who sent mass cards, texts, letters, messages and refreshments. A special thanks to Kennelly’s Pharmacy, and to Dr Gary Stack and Norma of Park Medical Practice for their unwavering care of our Dad. To his carer Sandra and to Consultants and staff at CUH, Bons Secours Tralee and UHK Palliative Care Unit who always went out of their way to treat Dad in such a kind and friendly manner.

On Brian’s first anniversary we, his family, wish to express our sincere thanks and appreciation for the sympathy and support shown to us on our heart-breaking loss. We wish to thank especially the ambulance crews and the Doctors and Nurses at University Hospital Kerry, who cared for our father in such a compassionate manner.

East Kerry to face Dingle, Rahillys and old friends Spa in Kerry SFC By MoynihanAdam

The draw for the 2022 Kerry Senior Football Championship took place in Tralee on Monday night and more than a few eyebrows were raised when all four Group 2 slots had been filled. Beaten 2021 finalists Kerins O’Rahillys took the seeded spot in the pool and they were joined first by relative newcomers Spa, then by 2018 runners-up Dingle, and then by the odds-on favourites East Kerry. The group’s deathly pallor can be attributed to more than just the obvious calibre of the teams involved. East Kerry and Dingle have bad blood dating back to that tetchy 2018 semi-final when both Cliffords were sent off, and a Dingle selector received a ban for striking Dara Moynihan (who will be hoping to line out for Spa against Dingle – he missed last weekend’s Club Championship match between the same teams, a match which Spa Meanwhile, won). East Kerry’s fixture against Spa is sure to feel a little unnatural for most of those involved as over a dozen players from the latter featured for the former when they won the championships of 2019 and 2020. Elsewhere, Dr Crokes have been drawn in a potentially tricky Group 1 alongside St Kieran’s, Kenmare Shamrocks and Shannon Rangers; holders Austin Stacks are in Group 3 with West Kerry, Mid Kerry and Na Gaeil; and St Brendan’s will take on South Kerry, Feale Rangers and Templenoe in Group 4. This year’s round robin format marks a major departure from previous iterations of the competition. All 16 teams are now guaranteed at least three matches, whereas in recent years that figure was just two. Of course, for many decades the Kerry SFC was straight knockout, meaning divisional sides sometimes played only one game per year. In that regard it has been predicted that the new structure will benefit the district teams more than most, although club teams will surely be glad of the extra championship matches too. The top two teams from each of the four groups will advance to the quarter-final stage with each group winner playing a second placed team from another group. The first round of fixtures is scheduled for September 10/11 with all Round 1 games being staged at neutral venues.

Last week I ran a poll on Twitter asking my followers for their picks in Groups 1 and 2 of the Senior Club Championship. The results were fairly clear-cut. Dingle (50.9%) and, to a lesser extent, Kenmare (25.6%) were fancied in Group 1. Austin Stacks (44.4%) and Dr Crokes (35.5%) were the top vote-getters in Group 2. Before a ball was kicked I felt as though it was hard to argue with those Whatpercentages.doweknow? All four of the teams mentioned lost their opening fixtures last weekend and they’re now facing door-die matches in Round 2. Defeat this time around would signal the end of their Club Championship aspirations for 2022, and maybe even worse. The dreaded relegation playoff awaits those teams who finish bottom of their four-team pools once all three round robin fixtures have been completed. Dr Crokes know all about that threat having stared down the barrel of the gun in 2021. Any talk of relegation this time around is premature but defeat to Rahillys does leave them in a sticky enough spot. Beating Templenoe in Round 2 is now essential – especially with old foes Stacks waiting for them in Round 3. It must be said that the team Crokes fielded against Rahillys was somewhat unproven (although certainly talented). They had 10 players aged 25 and under, which is quite a difference in age profile compared to previous seasons. Templenoe will be on a high following their sensational seven-point win over Stacks in Derreen and home advantage against Crokes will naturally benefit them greatly. It’s a tough one to call. Rahillys will guarantee their place in the semi-finals if they can avenge last year’s county final defeat at the hands of Stacks. On paper they appear to have as strong a team – if not stronger – than their Tralee rivals, who were without Kieran Donaghy, Brendan O’Sullivan and Dylan Casey from last year’s county final winning team. Spa are in great shape in Group 1 following their superb five-point win against Dingle. They can secure a spot in the last four with victory over Kenmare in Spa on Meanwhile,Saturday. at intermediate level, the Killarney Legion will be looking to hammer home their advantage in Group 2 when they travel to Dromid on Sunday. In Group 1, Gneeveguilla and Beaufort are also looking solid after opening round wins. They take on Currow and Ballydonoghue respectively in Round 2. Kilcummin lead the way in Group 3 and a testing away tie against An Ghaeltacht awaits on Sunday. One of the weekend’s most tantalising fixtures features two great East Kerry rivals as Rathmore and Glenflesk go head-to-head in Glenflesk on Sunday afternoon. Rathmore are currently on top after beating Mary’s by 10 points; Glenflesk shared the spoils with Milltown/ Castlemaine in their Round 1 game.

Kerry’s biggest fantasy football league is back Busy month for Deerpark Flesk Valley RC to host coastal regatta

ROWING: Members of Flesk Valley Rowing Club and Kerry Coastal Rowing at the launch of the Flesk Valley County Championship Regatta.

Deerpark Pitch & Putt Club is set for two busy weekends at the end of the month as it plays host to the National U16 Strokeplay Championship on Saturday, August 20 followed by the staging of their annual and popular Ricky Kelly Memorial competition from August 26-28.

This year will mark the 30th anniversary of the naming of the Ricky Kelly event after the former club PRO; he was one of the main founders when it was an inter-pub tournament back in 1991, prior to his sad passing. The Tatler Jack Bar are sponsors once more for this event like they have been for well over half of the tournament’s history. The format is a threeball scramble. Play this year is in 18 hole cards with a cost of €30 per card with a total fee of €50 if a team wishes to play a second card. In order to be considered for the main prize, teams must contain at least one non-registered member of Pitch & Putt TimesIreland.ofplay on Friday are 2-6pm (last card), Saturday 10am-5pm (last card) and Sunday 10am-4pm (last card). Presentation of prizes as well as evening entertainment returns this year on Sunday, August 28 as the club will announce further details of same nearer the time. The club throws open a big invitation to club members past and present to take part, especially as the club is getting ready to celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2023. Those without Pitch & Putt Handicaps will be allocated handicaps by the organising committee for the event. All those with queries are asked to contact the club in advance.

Listening to referees explain their decisions in real time will clear a lot of things up for commentators, analysts and the media. We will no longer have to speculate about what they did or did not see, or what specific rule is being cited, or why. Viewers, especially those who might be casual followers of the sport, will appreciate it too and become more educated; I know that’s how I feel when I watch rugby, for example. It just leads to greater transparency and understanding across the board. Well done to TG4 and Kerry GAA for being the pioneers. I’m sure others will follow their lead - as soon as the GAA allow them to do so. I was disappointed to learn on Wednesday that the GAA are preventing TG4 from using their live referee mic in this Sunday’s Wexford hurling final.

World Rally Championship Paul Nagle and Craig Breen are looking forward to the Belgian round of the World Rally Championship next weekYpresend.

Rally Belgium is a happy hunting ground for the Kerry/Waterford crew. Last year, while driving for the Hyundai World Rally team, they finished second behind then teammate and local hero Thierry Neuville. Back in 2019, before the legendary event was promoted to world championship status, they won the rally against strong local and European opposition. Last weekend the Ford M-Sport crew crashed out of fifth position in Rally Finland but were able to re-join under SuperRally rules. They left there holding sixth place in the World Rally Championship’s “We’vestandings.hadadecent enough end to the weekend, but obviously I’m disappointed with the overall result. Our pace has been good, we’d have liked to have stayed in contention for the podium a bit longer, but that’s the way it is unfortunately. We’re looking forward to Ypres now, it’s a completely different rally as we’re back on tarmac again, so let’s see how it goes,” said Breen.

The odd swear word from some disillusioned participant is bound to sneak through every now and then but you’d hear the same - and plenty more - at any match you attend from Cahersiveen to County Antrim.

PASS THE MIC: TG4 sound engineer Oisín O'Driscoll puts a microphone on referee John O'Halloran before the Kerry Senior Hurling Championship final at Austin Stack Park.

Implementing the referee mic on a wider scale is a no-brainer as far as I’m concerned. It doesn’t appear to take a huge amount of effort or expense for the broadcaster to set it up and, more importantly, it offers a wonderful insight into the unknown.

Our sports editor ADAM MOYNIHAN shares his thoughts on the week's burning issues

Ctrl + A. Delete. TG4’s GAA coverage is superb and they raised the bar once again when they mic’d up referee John O’Halloran for the Kerry hurling final between Causeway and Ballyduff. Pinning a microphone on the referee is standard practice in televised rugby games and judging by the positive response to Gaelic games’ first foray into this territory, I was expecting it to become the norm. It still might, but the GAA told The 42 that they were not aware beforehand of the ref mic being trialled in Stack Park on Sunday. “They believe such a development will require more discussion and education if it is to be implemented on a more regular basis in live TV coverage and could possibly need a policy change,” Fintan O’Toole reported. My guess is that Croke Park are fretting over the possibility of some expletive-laden tirade bringing shame upon the Association. And not necessarily from the mouth of a player. A friend of mine (a Wexford man, funnily enough) recalls an incident when a teammate was unceremoniously taken out of it by an opponent. “Ah ref, for f***’s sake!” the victim “Icomplained.gaveyou the f***ing free,” the referee replied. “What do you want me to do, slap him in the face with a wet Thefish?!”GAA are probably concerned that a referee swearing like that would leave them red-faced. In reality the clip would be a viral sensation and the general public would probably call for the official in question to run for Áras an Uachtárain. (He’d get my ****ing vote.)

British Rally Championship Whoever wins the driver’s category in this year’s British Rally Championship is anyone’s guess but is seems certain that a Killarney man will win the co-driver’s Killarneysection.

co-drivers Noel O’Sullivan and Mikie Galvin resume their battle for British Championship honours at Sunday’s Grampian Rally in Scotland – the fourth round of the series. Muckross man O’Sullivan is alongside Welsh driver Osian Pryce, and is the top seed for the event, while Galvin, from Aghadoe and his driver Keith Cronin slot in at number two. Both crews are driving Volkswagen Polo RC2 cars. Galvin holds an 11-point lead over O’Sullivan in the championship standings after three rounds but dropped scores will come into effect after this weekend. After the Scottish round, three rallies remain, one in Yorkshire and two in Wales.

x Was it 50, 60, 70, or even more yards or metres? It matters little; it will live on in the folklore of Kerry football. In years to come people will recall the moment when Seánie O’Shea became a man with the greatest kick of all time to quieten the Hill, to down the Dubs and send Kerry to the 2022 All-Ireland football final. Two weeks late the hunger pains of that dreadful famine since 2014 would be asThesuaged.Sam Maguire has now come home 37 times since Kerry won their first senior football All-Ireland in 1903 - and that was such an epic that the final was not played until 1905. No fewer than eight Killarney men started and two more were subs. Ten Celtic Crosses was a mighty haul for Beauty’s Home. We are back where we should be most years. Some see that as Kerry arrogance, and understandably so to those from counties who rarely win the All-Ireland.

ODYSSEY What of the train to Heuston and the odyssey to Croker? Irish Rail often gets bad press but I laud them for banning all alcohol on its trains. It was so energising to behold the huge number of Kerry teenagers in such high spirits and not fuelled by uisce beatha, or even worse. They were on an adventure trip and loving it as the train left Killarney the Sunday of the All-Ireland. The final itself is more than a game of 75 minutes or so. It is an experience and it ramps up the week of the match. You do not have just the three official Kerry selectors; everyone is a selector in Kerry, particularly so for the big games. Everyone is trying to figure out the starting 15. Should there be changes? Will there be changes? You may well get two different answers. ‘Will Geaney hold his place after a poor semi-final?’ one passenger wondered on the train journey to Dublin. ‘What about Dara Moynihan?’ asked a worried Spa supporter. Don’t burst the balloon. Dara suffered an ankle injury on Tuesday night’s training and unfortunately five days is too short a time for rehabilitation. ‘I heard he’s flying in training,’ someone else chimed in. Sure you can’t go to the training and see for yourself anymore. God be with the good old days of Mick O’Dwyer who welcomed everyone to watch the training. That was fine until the Lord Lucan lookalike from Tyrone balanced himself delicately on the tree at the St Finan's side of The long journey to support the county’s footballers on All-Ireland final day never gets old, writes Eamonn Fitzgerald

12.08.202258

Old habits die hard and outside is the place to be, thronged with Kerry supporters wearing the green and gold. It was so heartening to see all those smiling Kerry folk of all ages, some going to their first All-Ireland. For many it was their umpteenth time. It’s been a long wait since 2014. Hunger is great sauce and the Kerry supporters were savouring the occasion.

Aren’t we fortunate that David Clifford is so loyal to Fossa? He is mature beyond his 23 years. It took Cork a long time to lift Kildare star Larry Tompkins from Eadestown to Castlehaven and Shay Fahy from Sarsfields to Nemo Rangers. The pair spearheaded their All-Ireland successes of 1989 and 1990. They were beaten by Meath in the 1987 and 1988 finals.

One did come across a few Dublin supporters on O’Connell Bridge, but Seánie took the wind out of their sails two weeks prior, thanks be to God. Some things do change from the good old days, when lovers met their dates under the clock at Clery’s. It was also a good place to rendezvous with match-going friends or to pick up a ticket. The building still stands but you cannot buy merchandise there It’sanymore.ashort skip up to the Gresham Hotel.

SHERRIF STREET Back to our odyssey. Thoughts of the past would flood our minds if we take the familiar route along Parnell Street, but today we take the alternative route via Gardiner Street, Mountjoy Square and Sherrifer (Sheriff Street) where Luke Kelly, my favourite singer, was born at No. 1. The house is now demolished. Then there’s the home of Kellie Harrington, who never forgot where she came from, even when she won her Olympic gold medal. Salt of the earth in dear old Dublin town. No silver spoon in that lady’s mouth. The clock is ticking and the crowds are milling around Gills’ Corner. On to Jones’ Road and into Croke Park. The Field of Dreams, the Artane Band, Micheál Ó Hehir, Micheál Ó Muircheartaigh, Joe Brolly, Pat Spillane on his last session of punditry, Amhrán na bhFiann and the game is on with Gavin White wearing the number 7 geansaí. Meanwhile, in Tiernaboul, a local man doesn’t go to any pub for the action. ‘I’d much rather watch it on the wireless’, he says, as he tunes into Radio Kerry. Tim and Ambrose are creating word pictures. He will decode the Gospel according to that duo. The build-up is important, and so is the build down after it. They will be home tomorrow, so our friend will head from Tiernaboul to the Fitzgerald Stadium to see his heroes. Eight points from a 23-year-old in an All-Ireland final is mighty going. Where did David’s grandmothers and grandfathers come from? DNA is crucial. The Dubs are gone. Kerry stand tops in the roll of honour with 38 titles. Wouldn’t doubt you, Jack. Sam at home in the Kingdom will shorten the winter. Normal service has resumed. Kerry football means so much to Kerry people, but what is it? Garry McMahon gives his take on it: ‘You cannot box or bottle it, nor grasp it in your hand, But pride of race and love of place inspire a love of land. Time honoured is our birthright, we’ll never break the mould, It’s deep within the soul of us, who wear the green and gold.’

the Fitzgerald Stadium and filmed Kerry’s secret ploys. Kerry training sessions have been behind closed doors ever since ‘Didthen. you hear anything about Gavin White?’ another worried supporter asked. ‘You should have the inside story. I heard from a very reliable source that he was helicoptered to Ray Moran and Colm Fuller in Santry the Monday after the semi-final to operate on his knee.’ Kill that rumour. No helicopter. No Santry. Will he start? A definite ‘yes’, because he has the heart of a lion. Those gut-andlung-bursting runs from wing back will probably be curtailed. I expect Jack to set the tactics for Gavin; to midfield and no further. Stay at home and mind the house. I certainly did not convince the poor Morelady.mature Kerry supporters showed their caution when some younger passenger said, ‘sure we’ll beat Galway by 10 Don’tpoints’.mind that ráiméis. Galway are a good football county. Obviously he was not born by the mid-sixties when Galway won three-in-a-row and Kerry suffered more than once.

MICHAEL COLLINS When I think of the Gresham, I think of Michael Collins, the Clonakilty man who carried the torch for Irish freedom from Pearse’s 1916 Rising, just down the street in the GPO on the opposite side. Collins masterminded the fight for Irish freedom during the War of Independence. He was the master of disguise and intelligence, defying the best efforts of the Crown forces to capture him. He wrote to his lover Kitty Kiernan most nights (WhatsApp, how are you?) and used the headed notepaper of the Gresham Hotel. I don’t think he stayed there that often; it was a ruse to trick his pursuers.

He was the Irish Pimpernel, much like Monsignor Hugh O’Flaherty from Mangerton View, the Pimpernel of the VatiWhatcan. many readers may not know is that Michael Collins was a very good footballer in London. Cork could have done with him over their lean years. They didn’t win an All-Ireland between 1922 and 1945, when they beat Cavan. Collins could have been the precursor to Kieran ‘Star’ InDonaghy.10days time, Béal na Bláth will be packed as people gather on the valley and hillside to recall August 22, 1922. It is almost 100 years ago since Collins was shot dead. He was just 31 years old, in his prime with so much to offer the emerging Ireland and the fortunes of Cork football. When he was interned in Frongach after 1916 he became a great friend of Dick Fitzgerald, who had won his five All-Irelands prior to that. Dickeen from College Street organised football games and athletics during their spells inside. Collins came second in the 100 yards race and starred in the football. Dick must have been tempted to get Collins to transfer to Kerry, but such transfers were a no-no at that time. It would most likely have caused the same furore as the one that runs on and on for Shane Walsh. His club transfer from his home club Kilkerrin/Clonberne in Galway to Dublin’s Kilmacud Crokes is still news.

THE LIFFEY Irish Rail was on time in Heuston and the Luas came within minutes, packed with passengers who could not care less about the big match. Standing room only as the Luas weaved its way down the Quays, all windows open to keep Covid at bay. Take it away there Bagatelle: ‘I remember that summer in Dublin, and the Liffey as it stank like hell.’ It was the same damn smell. Unmistakable and it has not changed since my first visit to the Big Smoke well over a half-century ago. (Aren’t we so fortunate to be able to go on the Bog Walk in Kilcummin? Clean, invigorating, and one of the best viewpoints for the magic of Killarney.) Then there is the Adam and Eve Franciscan Church, where our ancestors went to a very early morning mass on All-Ireland final day, praying for a good result. Some had left from the Black Shop in Castlecove on Saturday evening to make the midnight ghost train from Killarney to Croke Park. Apart from the journey by road the only way to go for supporters from the 1920s up to the last Ghost Train, probably in 1960, was the iron horse though the night. Down beat Kerry in 1960, the first time ever that a northern team won the Sam Maguire. Far too often since then the cross border teams have been the nemeses of Kerry. Dare I mention them? For starters think of Tyrone and Armagh.

Following a fine display of dancing both the Senior Half Set and U15 Ladies set were crowned All Ireland champions with the Ladies U12 Set, U18 Half Set and the O.35 Mixed Set coming home with silver medals. A big thank you to all the dancers for their dedication and commitment over the past year. Thanks to the parents and Kilcummin Comhaltas branch for all their support, also the Recreational Hall committee and Rural Development for providing the venues for our training.
