He joined them in a few scenes and gave a lot of independent feedback on both days." He added that Michael is very personable and that "what you see is what you get, he was very down to earth". Teens shocked as Hollywood A-Lister turns up to class
The Kenya Education Project, established by retired Killarney schoolteacher and Fossa resident Eddie Sheehy, in 2003, is again providing crucial, life-enhancing support to the people of the slum village of Embulbul, 25kms south of Nairobi, and the students of the Edmund Rice Catholic Education Centre. Life is still very difficult for the people of Embulbul however, and that highlights the importance of the Kenya Education Project’s feeding programme with children receiving food packages to enable them to have one nourishing meal a day when, otherwise, they would have to go Thewithout.programme is run by the parish and it helps to provide food for the children of the village from Monday to Friday with up to 80 school pupils receiving meat, vegetables and rice. “The facility where the meals are prepared and cooked has been fitted with an upgraded kitchen with modern wood-burning stoves and two people have been employed to prepare the meals each day and maintain and clean the kitchen. Their pay amounts to €200 per month,” Eddie explained. “Other significant ongoing overheads include the outlay on vegetables, rice, meat, maize flour and firewood and that requires a spend of €600 per month. This has resulted in our overall monthly costs rising from €650 to €800 per month,” he Additionally, added.theKenya Education Project continues to support the school fees that need to be paid for students attending the local school as well as providing washing points and water stations and organising extra-curricular activities, including sports, for the children to enjoy. To help meet the escalating costs involved, the registered charity always welcomes financial support from the public which can make such a difference to the children and make their lives a little more tolerable and any donations from the people of Kerry are always particularly Anybodywelcome. seeking more information on the work of the Kenya Education Project or those willing to get involved or contribute can contact founder Eddie Sheehy on 085 7497271.

Three Liebherr Ship to Shore container cranes (STS) - which are amongst some of the largest in the world - have left Killarney ahead of their American destination.

Sadness at death of much loved Killarney man
The town was saddened to learn of the death of Brendan Joy who passed away peacefully on Tuesday at his home in the loving care of his family. Brendan (88), from Muckross and formerly of Plunkett Street, who worked in the International Hotel and as a Jarvey, was laid to rest yesterday (Thursday) in Aghadoe Cemetery following Requiem Mass in St Mary's Cathedral. Brendan was predeceased by his beloved wife Mairéad and baby daughter Maura, his brothers John, Jerry, Pat, Willie and sister Nancy. He'll be sadly missed by his daughter Breda, sons Liam, Michael, Brendan, Martin, Pat and Andrew, daughters-in-law Margaret, Eileen, Norma and Helena, his grandchildren Brendan, Mairéad, Charlie, Claire, James, Kevin, Orla, Maurice and Maura, sister Mary Sie (London), brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, relatives, neighbours and many great friends.
Organisers of the Killarney London Reunion are appealing for old photographs related to towns’ people who have connections to the British capital. The Killarney London Reunion will celebrate its 50th anniversary this year and for the first time ever the event will take place in Traditionally,Killarney.the reunion took place in either Wembley or Cricklewood but this year’s event will take place on October 8 in the Dromhall Hotel and will form one of the main events in the recently launched ‘An Turas Mór – Homecoming Kerry’ fesOrganiserstival.
LARGE SHIPMENT: Three Liebherr Ship To Shore container cranes which are amongst some of the largest in the world are on their way to America.
One particularly interesting feature about this project is that the cranes will ship partially assembled, with the upper structure (boom, beam and A-frame) sitting on the lower structure for the voyage. This is to keep the overall height of the shipped cranes low enough to pass under Bayonne Bridge which connects NY and NJ. When they arrive Stateside, they will anchor off Sandy Hook, where final preparations for passing under the bridge will be made. The vessel will wait for an exceptionally low tide, before passing under Bayonne Bridge in what is sure to be a spectacular sight. Once the cranes pass under the bridge, they will arrive at Maher terminals where they will be rolled off the ship and assembled in their final configuration before entering service.
The STS are currently being assembled and shipped from Cork Dockyard in Cobh and set to arrive at the port of New York and New Jersey within the next two Atweeks.thetime of writing, one of the cranes - with a span of 30.48m, a back reach of 22.9m, an outreach of 69.5m and a lift height over rail of 53.34 - has been successfully loaded on to the specialist heavy lift vessel, BigLift Baffin. Over the next few days, the remaining two cranes will be loaded in preparation for their upcoming voyage which will take place early next week. Sailing time to the USA is approximately 10 days. The cranes, for Liebherr customer Maher Terminals LLC, were designed and built at Liebherr Container Cranes in Killarney. Once manufactured, the main crane components were transported to the Port of Fenit where they were shipped to Cobh for assembly. "Liebherr secured the contract for these cranes in 2021 and since then our expert teams of engineers and designers have been working hard with our customers and partners to bring this project to fruition," Trevor O'Donoghue from Liebherr told the Killarney Advertiser. "This is the third shipment of Liebherr STS container cranes to have shipped from Cobh. Previously we have shipped three STS cranes to Puerto Rico and a further two to the Port of Hull in the UK, but these are the largest STS to ship from Cobh. These advanced STS container cranes are amongst the largest in the world and will be handling the world’s largest container vessels with up to 24 container rows stacked across the deck."

The booklet will be offered for sale - for a small fee to cover costs - during the reunion,” said organiser and local councillor, Donal Grady, who is a founding member of the Killarney London Reunion.

Well-known and much loved photographer Marie Carroll-O’Sullivan chats to locals about their news, views and accomplishments in her monthly column ‘Marie Meets’.
It was a department store historically home to the finest handcrafted goods, renowned all over Ireland for its quality selection, and that's just exactly how Marie (Ryan) Healy and Mary (O’Driscoll) Harmon remember it. “Ladies, what is your first impression of the all new Hilliards,” I asked. “A big change from my memories of Hilliards Marie, but isn’t it a beautiful piece of history restored so tastefully,” Mary Mariereplied.added that she thinks Dick Hilliard, Richard's father, "would be so proud". "If only they could see the amazing turn around,” she said. “Wasn’t it known as the Brown Thomas of Killarney ladies - or so I’m told,” Pat Sheahan Jnr said as he busied himself prepping the bar for another day. “That it was and more,” the women agreed, and from there on in I hardly asked a question! The stories and conversation just flowed and my shorthand was put to the test. Marie Healy, at just 14-years-old, applied for a position at Hilliards whilst attending the Vocational School. “My brother Kieran and father Mickey Ryan both worked for Hilliards so I said I’d see where the interview would take me. In April 1962, I began working at the haberdashery with long standing members of staff, Rita Cronin (RIP) and Ann O’Shea. I was soon upgraded to handbags and wool and years later upstairs to ladies underwear. In 1968 I left to be married. In those days Marie, one could not work after marriage. Things changed in the '80s and as Hilliards prepared for their famous August sale I was asked back to help out and there I stayed until they closed their doors in 1994 when I moved further afield to Avoca where I spent the next 18 years." At the age of 16 Mary Harmon began working at Hilliards. “I replaced Ann O’Shea in haberdashery, working closely with Rita Cronin. The haberdashery was located at the front door, the concierge of Hilliards so to speak. I later moved across the road to work with Jim Cronin and Ina Breen in the Waterford Crystal and silverware section. Like a magpie, I was a huge fan of all things shiny. We would make weekly deposits from our pay cheques to purchase, slowly working our way through various suites of crystal, Lismore, Tramore etc., and when we were done we’d anticipate our next suite carefully. In 1977 I was married and left Hilliards where I also left the some of the best memories of my life.” The ladies recalled the Club Card system at MaryHilliards.explained that was "not a bit like today's" where customers get a certain amount of points for their shopping which results in money-off vouchers for future purchases. Much like Mary’s deposits on her array of Waterford Crystal, customers would physically visit the accounts office weekly and pay forward for Christmas - a savings scheme which the Hilliards made no "Whatprofit. you put in you got out at Christmas, a very special time at Hilliards. Timmy O’Donoghue was our acting Santa and many of the staff, including myself, played elves. Ah the craic was mighty Marie. Anyone who worked at Hilliards became long serving members of staff,” Marie explained.

I wanted to take the girl's photo with the staff image in the background and had a sneaky look at the impressive cocktail menu on offer. I noticed many of the cocktails were named after the staff we had just mentioned such as ‘Ina in China’, ‘Rita in Hosiery’ and we all laughed as I noted ‘Mary’s Corset’ which immediately raised the question as to the where about of my name's sake "Marie’s Cocktail". At this point, Pat Jnr popped his head up from the bar saying “Oh sure Marie’s ‘The Silhouette’ - didn’t you say you worked in the ladies lingerie Marie?" We all laughed and I could see that Marie was pleasantly pleased with the reOnsponse.studying the staff image which hangs on the wall by the bar, Marie Healy could name every person. Mary Harmon excused herself saying “I was ‘as láithair’ (absent) that day”. “Most of the staff have passed away now,” Marie said, as she pointed herself out third from the right, front row standing. “But I know one thing, they would be truly proud of the history seeped in the premises today. I know I am. It’s Enterbeautiful.”Caroline Clarke, complete with “I'dclipboard.sayyou sold me my First Holy Communion dress and my first bra Marie!" Marie laughed, later remarking on how wonderful it was that Hilliards and Reidys were back side by side where they “Ladiesbelong.we’re short staffed, is there any chance ye would consider returning to Hilliards part-time?" Pat asked. Click! My job here was done, complete with the look I was going for for this pair of Thank‘tonics’!you Marie Healy and Mary Harmon, and also Pat for allowing us our chat for the Killarney Advertiser, outside of opening hours. The pleasure was all mine. I had an afternoon with two ladies which I can only described as ‘a tonic’ as we took a trip down memory lane at the newly revamped Hilliards on Main Street.
Ma rie Meets
BEST MEMORIES I asked both of them what their best memory was whilst working at Hilliards. “Going out the door home,” Mary exclaimed with laughter. “Not at all Marie, we didn’t have a lot of money but by God we had so much fun." “I’m going to say it was the day we conquered the Germans, what do you think Mary?” Marie asked. See what I mean, these girls kept me intrigued throughout. “Ah that was a great night” Mary replied. “We were taking part in ‘Tops of the Town’ at the Town Hall. Locals would be queueing overnight for tickets to this prestigious event. Rehearsals kept us busy through the most of Lent. We were a determined bunch. The Germans I am referring to were Liebherr Marie. Money was no object and their musical performance came complete with waterfall props. Lucky for us the event took place on St Patrick’s Day and our own performance was Irish themed. We won and we were on cloud nine with the cash prize and our celebratory gathering at the Muckross Hotel which was owned at the time by Anne Colgan.”

Going Dutch for the Puck Goat E: M:sean@killarneyadvertiser.ie0876771019•T:0646632215 SAY?
This year’s theme is biodiversity and sustainability. Tomorrow (Saturday) the Life in the Bogs - Family Funday in Cronin's Yard, Beaufort, runs from 10.30amActivities2.30pm.
There is no such thing as bad publicity. It is a phrase often used by press officers and PR specialists. The people of Killorglin have a lot to thank Joe Duffy for. The veteran RTÉ broadcaster spent most of last week giving out about the welfare of the Puck Theygoat. may not have all agreed with the sentiments of the conversations but there is no denying that details of the 400-year-old festival was broadcast into thousands of homes that previously knew little or anything about why a goat is king of a town for three days each AuAndgust.this free publicity surely contributed to the large crowds that attended last week’s festival. So, if there is no such thing as bad publicity can you imagine the results if there was good publicity surrounding an event or product. That is why I am taking my hat off to Fáilte Ireland. Have you seen the huge amount of Dutch registered cars touring county all summer? They are very distinctive as both front and rear registration plates are black writing on an orange background as opposed to the EU norm of black writing on a white plate. I meet dozens of such cars every day and have met coach loads of Dutch tourists checking into Killarney and Tralee hoIttels.got me thinking. How is this the case? Last Christmas Fáilte Ireland ran a direct marketing campaign in Amsterdam and ThousandsRotterdam. of commuters in both cities saw eye-catching ads for Ireland on trams operating there. It was all part of Tourism Ireland’s latest promotion in the Netherlands, which highlighted Ireland and, in particular, the ease of access for Dutch holidaymakers to the Wild Atlantic Way. In addition to the ‘wrapped’ trams, the promotion also included digital billboard ads in metro stations in Amsterdam, which were viewed an estimated two million times between early December and early January. The colourful ‘Ierland’ trams and billboard ads were seen by many potential Dutch holidaymakers – inspiring them to put the Wild Atlantic Way on their holiday wish-list for this year. So matter what you do, what club or organisation you represent, tell the world what you are doing. It may not always be plain sailing, as Puck Fair organisers found out last week, but the rewards far out-weigh the negatives.

Hoteliers in Killarney have outlined, for the first time, the challenges they face, as a result of soaring costs in all sectors.
Hoteliers predict difficult winter as costs continue to rise
3. Investment in Tourism Marketing and Development: Continued investment and support for tourism marketing both domestically and overseas.
1. Recruitment, Training and Development: Additional funding for hospitality recruitment and career awareness, and targeted resources for training and skills development.
HARD WINTER AHEAD: Bernadette Randles, the chair of the Kerry branch of the Irish Hotel Federation, says that hoteliers are in for a long hard winter as costs rise.
ELECTRICITY The ESB bill at the Dromhall Hotel has increased by €6,000 per month. In June 2021 the hotel paid €4,820.52 but in June this year they paid €11,369.69. In July 2021 the cost of electricity at the Muckross Road venue cost €5,597.09 but that had jumped to €11,892.21 by July this year. “This is for, more or less, the same units,” explained Ms Randles.
FUTURE
GAS In the same period gas prices increased substantially too. In June 2021 she paid €3,452.80 but 12 months later her bill was €4,801.45. It was much the same story in July, in 2021 the hotel paid €3,191.11 and a year later it cost “This€4,467.85.wasmore or less for the same usage of litres in 2021 and 2022,” she added. FOOD The cost of wholesale food into restaurants and hotels has also risen dramatiAcally.simple barometer is the cost of a loaf of bread. A sliced-pan cost €0.97 a year ago – today it is €1.35. Cooking oil has increased from €22 for a 20 litre drum to €38 in the same time period while a 25kg sack of plain flour was €16 a year ago but now costs €21. Meats like a striploin of beef went from €12.50 per Kg to €14.50 per Kg; a chicken fillet went from €0.98 cent per fillet to €1.35 which shows prices have risen “Alldramatically.thesesuppliers are facing the same increase in costs so hence they too have to increase their costs. It affects us all,” she added.
BUDGET The Irish Hotel Federation is calling for a number of key measures from Government as part of Budget 2023. They include:
2. Tourism 9% VAT: Retention of the 9% VAT rate for tourism businesses to support cost competitiveness in line with European competitors. The majority of Europeans have a low VAT rate on accommodation. Increasing the VAT to 13.5% would leave us with the second highest rate in the EU.

4. Cost of Doing Business: Improve cost competitiveness within the economy and avoid any cost increasing measures affecting tourism businesses.
“The outlook for our business will be different from October onwards and into 2023 as we deal with a number of pressing challenges including heightened uncertainty around inflation, escalating business costs, increasing risk of a global downturn and damage to consumer sentiment,” said Bernadette Randles, the chair of the Kerry branch of the Irish Hotel Federation. She revealed some of rising costs her family’s business has experienced in the last “Justyear.toput
“While our industry is currently seeing a welcome recovery in tourism, this is being boosted significantly by a number of one-off short-term factors including high levels of pent-up demand, a temporary increase in consumer spending post COVID and displaced business from 2020 and 2021,” she said. “A key challenge facing our business and the industry as a whole is the escalating cost of doing business which is having a detrimental impact across all areas of our operations.”
5. Sustainability: Targeted funding for a national hotel retrofitting scheme to reduce carbon footprint throughout the sector in line with the Government’s climate action goals.

We look after our facial skin twice a day so why wouldn't we look after the rest of our body. Body scrubbing can really pamper your skin, making it feel softer, smoother and healthier. Some of the main benefits of body scrubbing would be to look and feel healthier. The skin will feel better and so rejuvenated after a good scrub. You'll feel lighter in yourself and so much fresher. The fragrances from the body scrub also give your mood a lift. If you have any body bumps on the back of the arms, back, or thighs, scrubbing regularly will help remove them and prevent more from appearing. As it's the summer now, our bodies will be more on show. It's usually easiest to do a body scrub in the shower or bath. I would always turn the water away in the shower or stand up in the bath. Apply your chosen scrub in circular motion; spend a bit of time doing this on all the parts of the body you can reach, before removing fully. Doing a homemade scrub can be so beneficial and easy to do. One of my favourite homemade scrubs is half a cup of coffee, half a cup of sugar, two tablespoons or olive oil and a Vitamin E capsule. It smells amazing, feels great and leaves the skin silky smooth. If coffee isn't for you, try a half cup of coconut oil and half a cup of sugar. Mix them together to make a thick paste and apply to your body in circular motion to help exfoliate the dead cells away. The oil leaves the skin silky soft and if you have any extra scrub left over it will keep for a few days in air tight jar. If you have any beauty questions please call Jill on 064 6632966.

That's the tough part about the summer holidays, letting go of all the relaxed boundaries, schedules, and routines. There's no rhyme or reason to why anything does or doesn't get done. You fly by the seat of your pants day to day because your schedule just doesn't exist, and you're at the liberty of the kids. But, this time of year - the new school year - sure brings a lot of comfort with it. The kids will go back to school and you've finally got that time to yourself again. You go back to eating meals at regular times and intervals. You'll fall back into a set sleep schedule - and most of all, you can put your fitness routine back into place. It sure sounds like a delight, doesn't it? Now is the time to start gently easing into those routines so that when September rolls round you’re only a step or two away! HERE'S SOME TIPS TO GET BACK INTO ROUTINE QUICKLY: Map out what helped you be successful before. Do things like laying your workout clothes out the night before, packing your lunch the day before, and getting yourself taken care of before the kids - the night before. Meal prep for the week. You don't need 15 fancy, individual packed containers (although this helps!), but batch cooking the staples will help ease yourself back into the necessity of things. Keep things super simple - cook one to two proteins to have on hand, cut up veggies so they're easy to grab, and have some starchy carbs of some sort ready to grab too. The easier you make this for yourself, the quicker you can get back to a balanced and sustainable diet. Block off your workout times. The kids are not going to be crazy busy with activities just yet, so don't leave your fitness to "when you can fit it in". Just like their activities are prioritised, you need to prioritise your own and still look after yourself. You spent all summer being at liberty to their flexible summer schedule, that hour is for yourself now during the week. Book it in for the month, ahead of Thesetime! tips aren't anything complicated, but that's the point. Stick to the basics. Repeat the basics over and over again and your success will follow. If you need help mapping it out and finding the easy spots to win, send us an email at hello@activate.ie or pop into the Facebook group (Fitness, Nutrition & Health in Killarney) we have set up to help the people of Killarney and further afield to help with their health and fitness. We’re more than happy to help where we can!

Bríd and James exchanged vows on June 4 in Clonkeen Church but it was a bumpy road to the aisle to say the least. Bríd, daughter of Catherine and the late Michael Barry, and James, son of Dave and Mary Hurley were married by Fr Niall TheHoward.couple, James, a warehouse super visor in DPD in Farranfore, and Bríd, a stay-at-home mom, are together almost 11 years after meeting for the first time at Bríd's brother Donogh's wedding. "There was a fault in town at around 10.40am and it was due to come back on at 12.45pm. Those who travelled from afar were James' cousin Helena and her partner Todd with their son Jaxon who the family met for the very first time. The talent within the branch was clearly evident with a packed trophies table. Indeed some of the successes over the last number of months were replayed in a relaxed, jovial atmosphere that meant that all attending had a great night's en"Wetertainment.haddemonstrations of winning sets across all age groups and then we moved onto the musicians who pulled out all the stops to entertain the large crowd, packed into the clubhouse," Derek O'Leary, Kilcummin CCÉ PRO, told the Killarney Advertiser. John Moriarty, who has recently retired from his role of Supervisor with Kilcummin Rural Development was acknowledged with a presentation to reflect the outstanding work that he has done to enhance and grow Kilcummin Comhaltas over his 25 years in his role, he added. "Much thanks and praise was also offered to Mary, Adrian and Conor Moriarty, all involved in the progression of dancing and music within the Kilcummin branch. The music and entertainment continued with Helen Kerins and Denis Crowley late into the night. We're looking forward to next year already!"

The Dip will happen at dawn on September 3, and only those taking part will find out the location a few days beforehand. It is fun, exciting, empowering, daunting, exhilarating, peaceful and mindful according to participants of previous events. Everyone is on their own journey and participating for their own reasons. This year’s chosen charities are delighted to be part of this fun event and are urging women to sign up. Breda Dyland from the Kerry Cancer Support Group said that they are very thankful to be chosen by Wild Water Adventures as a beneficiary for this year's Dip. "We are really looking forward to what will be a unique and personal event. I want to thank Michaela, John and their volunteers for their hard work in organising the event and I hope that the ladies of Kerry and beyond come along and join us on the 3rd,” she said.

PRESENTATION: John Moriarty pictured receiving a presentation from the Kilcummin Comhaltas Committee, acknowledging his commitment and hard work over the years for Kilcummin CCÉ branch and his retirement in his role as Supervisor with Kilcummin Rural Development. Last year was its inaugural event - and it proved so empowering that organisers are inviting women to once again strip off for the second annual Dip in the Nip. It takes place next month, and due to the nature of the event - the location is a closely guarded secret. Organisers John and Michaela Edwards of Wild Water Adventures have said that it is set to be another great day and will once again raise substantial funds for cancer services in Kerry. “As a local swimming business, we at Wild Water Adventures deal with a lot of female swimmers, and we wanted to give something back to the community," John "Weexplained.havea unique skill set and we have used that to run several charity events over the years. We came up with the idea of running a Dip in the Nip last year and we asked Recovery Haven if they would like to be our chosen charity." Such was the success of the event with 170 participants, John and Michaela are now hoping that it will be even bigger and better this year. “Following the success of last year’s event, we have asked Kerry Cancer Support Group to come on board as a beneficiary this year as well. We are hoping to build on that success and Dip in the Nip Kerry is now set to be an annual event. The feedback we received from last year's event was that women found it empowering and emotional, with ladies of all ages and walks of life taking part. We have an all-female support crew of guards, lifeguards, and marshals.”
Location of second annual Dip in the Nip a closely guarded secret!
GETTING INVOLVED Recovery Haven too is delighted to once again be part of a hugely successful “Havingevent. seen the success of last year’s event and the pure emotion and sense of solidarity experienced by all the women who took part, we are thrilled and honoured to once again be involved in such a wonderful event. We would encourage all women to give it a go, because it is something very special and something they will not regret. As the phrase goes: ‘Feel the fear and do it anyway,” said Marisa Reidy. Dip in the Nip is open to all women aged 18 and over – including those who have experienced cancer themselves, those who are supporting a friend or family member on their cancer journey or those who want to remember and honour a loved one who they lost to the Registration, disease. priced at €40 (+ booking fee), is now open through Eventbrite and everyone who signs up will receive a custom swimming cap, a medal to mark their participation and will be automatically entered into a draw for some great prizes. Hiding in a neighbour's giant teddy bear was the wrong move for one Manchester thief who received nine months in jail last week. The teen from the Spotland area was wanted for stealing a car in May and when police went in for the arrest he ran and hid in the child's life-sized toy. "When we went to arrest him, our officers noticed a large bear breathing in the address before finding Dobson hidden inside!" GMP Rochdale said on their Facebook page. "He's now stuffed behind bars after being sentenced last week for theft of a motor vehicle, driving while disqualified, and making off from a petrol station without payment. Hopefully he has a bearable time inside...." The Greater Manchester Police posted on their page online: "Our neighbourhood task force and divisional tasking team in #Rochdale could bearely believe what they stumbled across in search for a wanted man last month... The Grampian marks Cronin’s second BRC victory of the season, having also won the Jim Clark Rally on the series’ pre vious visit to Scotland in May. With Pryce also taking two wins so far, Cronin recognised the importance of Saturday’s result, ahead of the next two rounds taking place on Pryce’s home ter “It’sritory:great to get the win, as I said at the start of the rally, we really did need it, especially when we’re going into Wales next, it’ll be tough to beat Osian in Wales. We had a good start and we were able to manage it from there. It’s our first win on gravel in a while, so that was really good. The bitter divisions over the Treaty led to the outbreak of the Civil War which began on June 28 1922 when the Provisional Government launched an assault on the Four Courts in Dublin which had been occupied by anti-Treaty republicans for several weeks. Among those fighting in Dublin when the war began were the Scarteen brothers. Kenmare was among the large towns in Kerry which came under the control of the Free State Army during August 1922. The O’Connor-Scarteens led a large landing of over 200 troops by boat at Kenmare on August 11 and seized control of the town. Many local men enlisted under their command. A few days later, Tom commanded a seaborne army detachment which captured Cahersiveen and Waterville. Anti-Treaty forces in south Kerry launched an audacious attempt to recapture Kenmare on September 9 1922. As the republican assault on Kenmare began, at about 7am a group of Anti-Treatyites burst into the bakery owned by the O’Connor-Scarteen family at 5 Main Street. Tom and John were asleep in their beds upstairs. The sentries keeping an eye out for Anti-Treatyites had earlier been sent home. It was a premeditated attack: it was later claimed that the local IRA had ‘cast lots’ to decide who would carry out the killTomings. was just 20 and his brother, 25. The shooting of the Scarteen brothers took place within weeks of the deaths of Michael Collins. The incident resonated beyond Kenmare and beyond the confines of the Civil War.
Deputy Michael Healy Rae TD
Next month marks 100 years since the deaths of National Army Officers Tom and John O’Connor-Scarteen and a special commemoration is being planned.
Deputy Michael Healy Rae TD has called on the Minister for Housing Darragh O’Brien to open a process to review procedures and guidelines into the decision-making process of An Bord Pleanála. This follows Minister O’Brien's action of referring a report on certain decisions at An Bord Pleanála to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Gardaí and the Standards in Public Office Commission (Sipo) on the advice of the Attorney GenAneral.Bord Pleanála was founded in 1977 to play the part of an independent review service for planning decisions made by local “Manyauthorities.ofthesedecisions had far reaching consequences for families and businesses, they are rightfully now concerned about the validity of the decision taken by the Bord and if wrongs were made then it is important that the Minister ensures the recommence is made to those affected or a host of legal actions may follow,” Deputy Michael Healy Rae said.
Scarteen were among those who listened to Michael Collins speaking at a Pro-Treaty meeting in Killarney in April 1922 and they were motivated to join the new army of the Free State. They, along with other local lads, enlisted in the army on their return to Kenmare. As experienced combatants during the War of Independence, they rose through the ranks, Tom to the rank of Brigadier General and John to the rank of Captain.
Commemoration to mark 100 year anniversary
The Kerry TD added that in light of the recent referral of the findings into the report from An Bord Pleanála to the DPP, there is a growing concern amongst the public in Kerry and beyond that individual cases which were adjudicated on by An Bord Pleanála and refused should now be reviewed to see were correct procedures and guidelines adhered to during the decision-making process.
The public are invited to a gathering in Old Kenmare Cemetery to remember Tom and John O’Connor-Scarteen on Sunday September 4 at 1.30pm where they'll be an oration by Minister Peter Burke TD. The brothers grew up on a farm at Scarteen, Blackwater, between Sneem and Templenoe. They adopted the name ‘Scarteen’ after the townland. Their parents Michael and Deborah owned and operated a bakery and grocery shop at 5 Main Street, Kenmare. Tom and John were both active members of the Irish Republican Army and fought in many engagements against the Crown Forces during the War of Independence between 1919 and 1921. Tom played a prominent role in the Headford Junction Ambush, Killarney in 1921, one of the major incidents of the Anglo-Irish War. The Treaty which followed the end of the war and which was signed in December 1921 divided Ireland. The terms of the agreement split the Irish Republican Army, Sinn Féin and the wider community. It also divided Dáil Éireann but a majority of members, 64, voted in favour, with 57 against. Three Kerry TDs voted for the Treaty and three voted against. Michael Collins became the leader of the Pro-Treaty faction and Éamon de Valera became head of the Tomanti-Treatyites.andJohnO’Connor
TD says An Bord Pleanála decisions "need to be reviewed"

The funerals which followed saw the town come to a standstill. The Scarteens were among approximately 175 people who died in the Civil War in Kerry which claimed the lives of almost 90 Pro-Treaty National Army soldiers, over 70 Anti-Treaty IRA, and 15 Politically, civilians. the death of the Scarteens would remain to the fore in the history and politics of the county for over a century, with two of their brothers, a nephew and a grand-nephew all serving in either local or national politics as representatives of Fine Gael. One hundred years later the O’Connor Scarteens are still heavily involved in politics in Kerry: Tom and John’s brother, Timothy, served on Kerry County Council alongside another brother, Pat, who also served in Dáil Eireann and Seanad Eireann. Pat along with his son, Michael, and grandson, Patrick, have 74 years unbroken service on Kerry County Council. Cllr Patrick Connor-Scarteen was Mayor of Kerry/Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council in 2020-2021 and was elected Cathaoirleach of the Kenmare Municipal District in June 2022.

Unfortunately, there is no one-size-fits-all answer. It depends on your own personal situation, your income and your lifestyle. With that said, there are general benchmarks that can be used when assessing your savings levels.
And I get it; uncertainty around money can be one of the leading causes of stress.

Recent studies from the Investment and Wealth Institute have shown that only one in seven retirees are withdrawing principal from their retirement within a given year. The remaining retirees live off of their investments or even less. According to a study by United Income, 'The average retired adult who dies in their 60s leaves behind $296k in net wealth, $313k in their 70s, $315k in their 80s, and $238k in their 90s'. In short, retiree wealth tends to go up, not down, with age. This suggests that more people should be asking, "Am I saving too much?" rather than "Am I saving enough?"

Start saving 6% at age 25 and ramp up savings by one percent each year until reaching an appropriate level, typically around 15%, including any employer conSavingstributions.of between 1 and 1.5 times your current gross wage at age 35 is a solid target to aim for. Most people looking to retire around the age of 65 should aim for assets totalling between seven and 13-and-a-half times their pre-retirement gross income. These general numbers won't apply to everyone, and a more robust financial plan is essential, but this should help to get the ball rolling. A more in-depth financial plan should incorporate future project earnings, inheritance, the progressive compounding of your investments over time and the reduction in your spending rate over time as you move away from your most capital-intensive years. It is essential that you take the time to figure out what you are truly saving for. Clarity around your exact requirement will ensure you strike the balance between spending in the present and saving smartly for the future. But is there a downside here? Does our preoccupation with savings inhibit other areas of our lives and at what point does saving money have diminishing rates of utility? The allure of early retirement cannot be denied; paying your mortgage off a few years early is compelling, but continuously foregoing what you want now in the name of saving for 'the future' may not be as necessary as we think. Despite the anxiety and focus around saving, the evidence suggests that many individuals seem to be saving too much.

With tearful eyes we watched you And saw you slip away Although we loved you dearly We knew you could not stay. It broke our hearts to lose you But you did not go alone For part of us went with you They day God called you home. Loved and remembered by your loving wife Miriam, sons Duncan and Colin, Sandra, Davidson family, Cobh and Evans family, Killorglin. “Always in our thoughts, Forever in our hearts.” Anniversary Mass will be held on Sunday 21st of August at 10.00am in Fossa Church.

FIERCE RIVALS: Michael Potts of Dr Crokes solos through ahead of Dylan Casey of Austin Stacks during a dramatic Kerry SFC tie in 2020. Photo: Brendan Moran/Sportsfile. By FitzgeraldEamonn 2.30pm
The prospect of relegation will once again be staring Dr Crokes in the face if they lose to three-in-a-row champions Austin Stacks on Sunday. Crokes have home venue and they will certainly need that advantage following two defeats at the hands of Templenoe and Kerins O’Rahillys in Rounds 1 and 2. They were beaten by four points by Rahillys and lost out narrowly by a single point at a balmy Templenoe on Saturday last (1-6 to 0-10). Both sides kicked some dreadful wides and the county players were largely anonymous - obviously still drained after their All-Ireland win/celeThebrations.only two Kerry players who really shone were Gavin Crowley and Micheál Burns. The outstanding footballer on the field was Templenoe’s Pat Clifford, who is not long back from England. Crokes have now suffered four defeats in a row. Along with Stacks, the Killarney club are the most successful club team in Kerry. Crokes won seven Kerry SFC titles between 2010 and 2018. Now they are rebuilding a new team with a cohort of young players to be blooded. However, that does not provide the total reason for their losses. They were close to a full team versus Templenoe, except for key player Gavin White who is out with a knee injury which could keep him out of football for the rest of the season if he needs surgery. Micheál Burns and debutants Neil O’Shea and Cian McMahon kept Crokes in the game the last day. Fionn Fitzgerald also showed that he hasn’t lost the defensive skills he has honed in Croke Park and elsewhere. He confined Killian Spillane, Templenoe’s most dangerous player, to just one point from play. Burns did very well also. The Rock also had a dreadful start to this year’s championship as they were hammered by Templenoe and just about got out of dodge on Sunday last against Strand Road. This match at Connolly Park was a repeat of the 2021 Kerry SFC final. After their mishaps of losing their two top players at the start of last year’s county final, Rahillys put in a big effort to win the bragging rights. David Moran was unlucky to be injured last year but he made amends for it this time around. As expected, Jack Savage scored from frees. Mush O’Brien scored their goal and Tommy Walsh popped up for three points, which included two marks. Stacks battled on, however, and some of their younger players did well. The Stacks natives told me that Star Donaghy will not be playing this year “because he is nearly Gearóid40”.Fitzgerald’s goal got the Rock going and it was nip and tuck to the end with Stacks eventually winning by a single Nowpoint.Stacks are back in the mix for a semi-final berth, although they could still face the drop if their trip to Killarney is unsuccessful. Group leaders Templenoe (4 points) face Rahillys (2 points) at the same time in Strand Road. Stacks (2 points) will secure a top two finish if they win and Rahillys lose. If Rahillys and Stacks both win, the top three teams will be separated by points difference. If Stacks lose on Sunday and Rahillys win, Stacks will finish joint bottom with Crokes, at which point their head-tohead record against Crokes will sentence them to the relegation playoff. However, if Stacks lose and Rahillys also lose, they and Crokes will be joint bottom and the fourth placed team will be decided by points difference. One thing is certain: a further loss for Crokes will put them into a relegation battle, as happened last year. They won that game against Legion. Brian McMahon will be looking for a big step-up in performance from the Crokes in this all black and amber clash at Lewis Road.

HERO: Kerry and Fossa star David Clifford is chased from the field by eager fans following Fossa's victory over Castlegregory. Photo: LiveScore Ciarraí. What he did in the All-Ireland with a Man-of-the-Match performance, he is now producing for his home club, Fossa. Clifford kicked 1-9 as Fossa defeated Castlegregory by 2-15 to 0-10 in the Junior Premier Championship. This is the standard of junior grade football in Kerry. The heroes of the All-Ireland final are now performing for their own clubs and for their own supporters. Not a whisper of any of the Kerry heroes presenting another Shane Walsh rí-rá. Last weekend, Kerry keeper Shane Ryan scored 1-4 outfield for Rathmore, and Seánie O’Shea deprived Spa of a win and earned Kenmare a draw. They are fortunate that they are allowed play football fairly in Kerry and not to be marked by hatchet men, who then boast that they have quietened a Kerry star. None of the Kerry players are of the touch-me-not type and there will be days when some unknown will keep them scoreless. Kerry supporters would not condone dangerous and unfair play even if the perpetrator is from their own club. The same is not true in some other counties where the county man is tarItgeted.cost supporters an entrance fee of €100 to see Kerry play just one final at Croke Park. If you were unfortunate enough to have had a seat on the Upper Cusack Stand you had the helicopter view and may have only been able to identify some Kerry players by their receding hairlines. This weekend you can see them at close range and discover who has tattoos on those valuable legs. It will cost you a tenner. Be generous and throw in a fiver for the local club lotto. You are still saving One€85. of the great by-products of the intercounty GAA scene in 2022 is that the senior hurling and football All-Irelands were completed in July with victories going to Limerick and Kerry respectively. That leaves the second half of the year to run off the club competitions. Kerry were very quick off the mark, especially in the hurling series. With just a handful of hurling teams they were able to complete the competition very Therequickly.is a very big number of football clubs and the county board decided to run off the Club Championship before any of the County Championship games were played. Club teams were afforded three matches in their groups so there has been a plethora of games in all grades, senior, intermediate and junior. There is always extra interest in the games when Kerry are crowned champions. With Kerry tipped to retain the title next year, the winner of the Senior Club Championship may well provide the captain for Kerry, depending on the outcome of the County Championship. Go to Fossa at 7pm tomorrow (Saturday) for their final group game against Listry and sample junior football in Kerry. Most likely you will see another exhibition of scoring by David Clifford. Will Listry succeed where everyone else has failed? SPA DRAW Spa conceded a late goal at home to Kenmare as they drew in their Group 1 Round 2 game. That point may turn out to be very valuable but they should have won, especially when Kenmare were reduced to 14 men. All-Ireland winner Stephen O’Brien was sent off for a second yellow card infringement. Not for the first time, Seánie O'Shea kept the scoreboard ticking over for the Shamrocks. He score nine points, five of these from frees. Top scorers for Spa were Evan Cronin (0-5) and David Spillane (0-4). Spa now face a tough assignment away to senior debutants Na Gaeil at Killeen (Saturday 7pm). Their hopes of asserting themselves at senior county level have been boosted by the return of midfielder Liam Kearney. A brilliant All-Ireland winning minor, he suffered repeated injuries curtailing his intercounty ambitions. He has played well and his duel with Diarmuid O’Connor will be key to victory in this game. The latter outplayed Seánie O’Shea in the Kenmare game and soloed through to score 1-7. INTERMEDIATE Legion have made a great start in their Intermediate grade, winning both of their games. Ryan O'Grady was the big scorer away to Dromid Pearses last weekend with a personal tally of 2-3 for a stroll in the Iveragh sunshine. Legion won 2-18 to 0-7. They will certainly win their remaining game at Derreen on Sunday at 2.30pm versus lowly John Mitchels. Kilcummin had a great 1-11 to 0-11 win over Desmonds in Round 1, but the long journey to famed Gallarus in Round 2 proved too much as they were edged out by An Ghaeltacht. Which was the last senior team to win at Gallarus? Kilcummin should get back on track at home tomorrow to Glenbeigh/Glencar at 7pm and qualify with four points. Kerry goalkeeper Shane Ryan was the real difference in the local derby between Rathmore and Glenflesk. He shot a great goal and added four points, a splendid return for any forward. Glenflesk will rue their best chance of a goal when Darragh Roche slipped fellow county man Paul Murphy, but he blasted it over the bar. Goal lost and initiative went to Rathmore who advance to the Glenfleskquarter-finals.must beat St Mary’s in their final game to have any chance of going through. That will be a tough assignment against the Cahersiveen team. Isn’t it just heaven on earth to be able to stroll down to your local GAA club at the heart of the community and see close up the silken skills of David Clifford, the man I expect to be named Footballer of the year 2022? Brilliant Clifford continues to delight fans at club level
| By MoynihanAdam Hi Jason. How are you keeping? All good, Adam. Thanks for speaking to me. No bother. You’d have a reputation as being a bit of an all-rounder when it comes to sport. Remind us of the teams you have represented. Football with Dr Crokes, soccer with Killarney Athletic and Killarney Celtic, and golf with Killarney Golf and Fishing Club. How is the golf going at the moment? Pretty good, but I’m not practicing nearly as much as I was last summer so it’s a bit up and down. What’s your favourite and least favourite hole in Killeen? The 10th on Killeen is my favourite hole and my least favourite is the 1st. I always make a mess of it. Who’s your favourite local golfer to go for a round with? Patrick Buckley and Anthony O’Carroll are my regular playing partners. And lately Ken ‘Snakes’ Clifford, who is always good craic but his golf game leaves a lot to be desired. What’s the best piece of golf advice you’ve ever received? Drive for show, putt for dough! What’s your happiest sporting memory as an adult? Winning the All-Ireland Junior Cup with my Killarney Golf and Fishing Club teammates last year, with my brother-in-law Donal Considine as manager. And your best memory from your underage days? When our team won the All-Ireland Junior Cup when I was 17. We were managed by my dad, James ‘The Wedge’. Biggest sporting regret? No regrets. Who has been the best manager/ coach you have played for? I would say Mikey O’Donoghue when I was underage with the Crokes, and Ed O’Neill when we were in the Sem. Who’s the most talented player you’ve ever played with? Rory O’Sullivan at golf. He was an unbelievable talent underage. He doesn’t play as much anymore but he can still light it up when he does. In soccer, I’d say Eoin O’Connell. He was top class. And Mickey Joe Grady was a brilliant footballer. Toughest opponent? Mark Bowe (when he doesn’t have the shanks). Who are your favourite athletes of all time? Tiger Woods, Alan Shearer and the Gooch. Any hobbies outside of sport? Hiking and running. Best restaurant in Killarney? Tough choice but Colm makes the nicest pizzas in Charlie Foleys - when he actually does a day’s work. Favourite spot for a pint? Charlie Foleys and The Speakeasy. What’s the last show you binge watched? Better Call Saul. Great show. Which actor would play you in movie about your life? Michael Fassbender! But I don’t think he’ll be clearing his schedule for the role anytime soon! What would you sing at karaoke? Maggie May. And last question… Which of your Killarney Golf Club friends would you least like to get stuck in an elevator with? Tadhg ‘Tiger’ O’Keeffe. He can be pretty loud! I hadn’t noticed… Sound for that, Jason. All the best. No bother at all. 56 19.08.2022

SMALL TALK WITH ADAM MEETS KILLARNEY’S TOP SPORTS STARS & PERSONALITIES
FLASHBACK: Jason Arthur celebrates his birdie putt on the 18th green to win the 2002 Bulmers Junior Cup at Galway Golf Club. Photo: Ray McManus/Sportsfile.
This week Adam Moynihan caught up with talented Killarney golfer Jason Arthur to chat about his game, his fondest sporting memories and his playing partners –good and bad!
These figures, which were published a week ago by the Alan Turing Institute in the UK, are probably outrageous to the uninitiated. But for those of us who frequent the dark and dispiriting world of Football Twitter, the numbers actually seem a little low. Football Twitter - a massively popular section of Twitter where accounts post exclusively about football - can be rough. There are plus points, obviously. It’s a great place to get the latest breaking news. You come across amazing highlights from all over the world. There are some very funny people on Football Twitter, banging out memes to beat the band; hardly a day goes by that I don’t get a laugh out of something football related that I found there. Then there’s the bad side. As the above stats illustrate, criticism is rife. So much of the content seems to be centred around apportioning blame and ridiculing players, managers, fans and journalists. The 30% of Premier League footballers who aren’t getting abuse must be really keeping their heads down because when I scroll through Twitter I get the impression that everyone is getting it in the neck all of the time. Demeaning clips of on-field errors go viral every day. Manchester United academy graduate Scott McTominay has an account called ‘Stop That, Scotty!’ dedicated to him, but not in a good way. The account posts parody montages of the midfielder’s mistakes in a given game. A recent video of his errors during the 4-0 defeat to Brentford got over 3,000 retweets and 12,000 likes. Players – even all-time greats like Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo - are dismissed as bottlers, frauds, and pen-merchants. Everything that happens on the pitch is someone’s fault and nothing is off the table. I don’t know how some Premier League footballers use social media at all. It’s bound to damage their mental health one way or another. Where does all this vitriol come from? I think the way Twitter (and really all social media) works is a key factor. In the past, before Twitter, supporters of Chelsea, for example, would predominantly mingle with fellow Chelsea supporters. Interactions with rival fans would be minimal, as would exposure to those rival fans’ opinions. I remember frequenting an Aston Villa forum when I was younger, before Twitter blew up, and it was a community of Villa fans chatting about Villa things from a Villa perspective. Occasionally a supporter from another club would make themselves known but interactions with this person behind enemy lines tended to be polite – maybe even overly so. Of course, before the internet, these interactions between fans of the same team would take place in a bar or on a bus while travelling to a game. No one really knew what the other crowd were thinking, and no one really cared. Twitter is a different world. Fans can see what fans of other clubs are saying about them, they can see their biased opinions. In a sport as tribal as football, conflict is inevitable. If you post a video mocking Virgil van Dijk, how are Liverpool fans going to react? It’s only natural to be defensive in this situation, which leads to a response, which leads to more animosity. It’s a vicious cycle. And we haven’t even talked about racist abuse being directed at black and mixed race footballers, which has been a very serious ongoing issue for far too long. Racism has always been a part of society, obviously, but Twitter gives racists easy access to their victims. The anonymity factor is huge here. Many accounts on Football Twitter are anonymous with profile pictures of footballers or crests or some other soccer-related image, so even if action is taken against the account, there are no real life conseWouldquences.people be more considerate if they had to provide personal information before setting up an account? Probably, although it’s also fair to question whether or not a company like Twitter can be trusted with that personal inforItmation.doesseem as though Twitter could be doing more to weed out harmful tweets and harmful accounts. You also wonder if they could promote and reward positive tweets, thereby encouraging users to eschew the abusive comments. When it comes down to it the majority of users are looking for positive feedback in the form of likes and retweets. If critical and abusive tweets are successful, which they are, then why would they stop? For now, perhaps the best option for members of the Football Twitter community who are hoping to avoid negativity is to scroll less. Don’t tap into the replies if you know you’re not going to like what you see. And don’t support those users who base their personas around Socialnegativity.media was invented so we could connect. Every time we like a tweet that puts another person down, all we’re doing is widening the divide between us. 70% of Premier League footballers are abused on Twitter. One in 14 receive abuse every single day.

Four doubles in a row for unstoppable Celts McCarthy goal seals cup final as Celtic go marching on
58 19.08.2022
Killarney Celtic continued their remarkable run in Kerry District League competitions on Wednesday night as they defeated a spirited Camp side in the final of the Greyhound Bar KO Cup. Brian Spillane’s outfit were overwhelming favorites for this end-of-season clash having powered mercilessly through the Premier A division en route to yet another league title, but their opponents held firm for longer than expected. Fittingly, it was top scorer Stephen McCarthy who eventually broke the deadlock in the 64th minute. Celtic held that lead to run out 1-0 winners and capture another piece of silverware. Incredibly, the victory marks their fourth league and cup double on the bounce. Massive credit is due to this bunch of Celtic players who have propelled the club to an unprecedented period of success over the past five years or so (one season was curtailed due to the pandemic). Their domination is surely unparalleled in any era of Kerry soccer; to win the league several years in a row is one thing but to continuously win the cup as well is testament to their consistency and their professional Long-servingapproach.veterans John McDonagh and Gary Keane, both of whom are now in the over 35 category, are perhaps deserving of special praise for their contributions over the years. Whether or not they return for another season remains to be seen but whenever they do retire their rivals will be glad to see the back of them, that’s for sure. Of course, Celtic’s seemingly never-ending reign of terror poses serious questions about the current state of senior soccer in Kerry – one team dominating in this fashion is surely not a sign of a healthy league – but those questions can be tackled another day. For now, the club from Derreen can bask in the glow of another major trophy. Four doubles in a row. We’re well into August now so the 2022/23 season is just around the corner. Can anyone stop them from making it five?

Kilcummin GAA CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP: An Ghaeltacht 1-13 Kilcummin 1-11. Following our victory over the Desmonds on the previous week we travelled to Gallerus on Sunday to face the Gaeltacht who are always a very formidable team on their own ground. So, it transpired as they secured the points to leave the group very much in the balance with four teams on two points prior to this week's final group games. For our part our players battled hard and stayed in touch with the home team until the last ten minutes when the opposition scored three consecutive points to see out the game. The first half had seen us match the opposition score for score early on with both teams at 3 points with fifteen minutes gone. Kilcummin certainly had the better of the second quarter when a Cian Foley goal helped us to reach half time leading by 3 points. Five minutes into the second half the sides were level and both teams exchanged points until those final few minutes that saw Gaeltacht get over the line. We now play Glenbeigh/Glencar on this Saturday at 7pm in Kilcummin to decide who qualifies for the quarter-finals. Team: Brendan Kealy (0-1f), Kevin McSweeney, Dara O’Callaghan, Chris O’Leary, Eoghan O’Donovan, Philip O’Leary, Dan Moynihan, Kevin Gorman (0-1), Gary O’Leary, Kelvin Teahan, Mark O’Shea (0-3), Cian Foley (1-0), Danny Cronin (0-2), Paul O’Shea (0-1), Noel Duggan (0-3). Subs used: Kieran Murphy, Sean Brosnan. Listry GAA LOTTO: Numbers drawn 22, 23, 25, 27. €100 Tadhg Ahern, Faha. €50 x 2 Patricia Flynn, Rockfield. Noreen Nolan, Listry. €25 x 2 Albert Ahern, Skibberen. Tim Fitzgerald. Next Sunday’s Jackpot O'DONOGHUE€5,550.
SQUADS: Listry was well represented. David McCarthy played wing back on the U14 team. Eanna Murphy was centre forward on the U15 team. James Clifford is also a member of this squad. 60
