End of an era as Grady calls time on political career
Long-serving Killarney councillor Donal Grady will call time on his political career in the summer.
| By Sean MoriartyHe made his announcement to step down at Monday’s full meeting of Kerry County Council.
Mr Grady was first elected to Killarney Town Council in 1999. He followed in the footsteps of his father John who was first elected in 1967. His brother Sean was the second member of the family to get elected. Both brothers served together for some time but with the abolition of Town Councils in June 2014 the family decided that Donal would go alone and that Sean would retire.
He subsequently won that seat and the following 2019 local election ensured there has been at least one member of the family elected in the county since 1967.
Donal said he has had many highlights in his 24 years in politics from securing houses for those in need of a roof over their head to more simple but equally important projects.
“I would love to see the skatepark fin-
ished before I go,” he told the Killarney Advertiser.
Grady pushed for this project from day one. Construction has been slightly delayed due to the recent spell of rainy
Calls to remove Protected Structure status at St Finan’s
| By Sean MoriartyLocal councillor Brendan Cronin is calling for the removal of the ‘Protected Structure’ designation at the former St Finan's Hospital.
The historic building has been lying idle since it closed in September 2012. The hospital and adjoining lands are up for sale by the Health Service Executive (HSE) since then.
So far no realistic offer has been made on the site despite suggestions that it could be used for social housing, a catering college and a hotel.
Each year the building, which was built in the 1850s, falls into further disrepair. Cronin believes its protected status is deterring potential buyers.
At Monday’s full meeting of Kerry County Council Cronin asked the Council executive to reconsider the designation.
“This is a strategically important site and the protected structure designation is a major impediment to any development or use of the building and adjacent lands, the building has been left empty and idle since closing in 2012 and taking on the burden of well over €100 million renovations has proven to be financially toxic,” he told the meeting.
“Ultimately, as time moves on it will become a derelict eyesore like similar buildings in other counties and cities. A change needs to be made in the current designation to lift the obstacles blocking the potential of this important site."
Kerry County Council management did not support the idea.
weather but it remains on target for a summer opening.
Donal’s son Martin, a key figure in his backroom team in recent years will be co-opted onto Kerry County Council at ei-
ther the June or July full meeting of Kerry County Council.
POLITICAL CAREER
Grady was born in Killarney and spent his childhood between Killarney and Kilcummin. He was schooled at both the Monastery in Killarney and Clashnagrane National School, Kilcummin before attending the now-defunct Technical College on New Street.
After college, he spent a few years working with Liebherr before switching to Killarney Urban District Council. That led to a job with Kerry Fire Service and he was eventually promoted to Station Officer in Killarney until his retirement in 2005.
“The fire service was my great love and although the work was hard and often heart-breaking, I found it very rewarding. I am very proud of the fact that my family are still involved in the fire service today,” he said previously.
His first foray into politics came in 1999, he retained his seat in 2004 and topped the poll in 2009.
“I followed in the footsteps of my late father John and my brother Sean; politics has always been in my blood,” he said. He served one term as Mayor of Killarney between 2010 and 2011.
Donal has served on many projects in the Killarney region including the Killarney Looking Good Committee, the Killarney Drugs Liaison Committee and the Killarney Twinning Group.
“I have always been completely independent of the party political system and, as such, have always been free to express ideas and support or oppose proposals based solely on my own conscience and my own opinions,” he said.

“A declaration has been issued in relation to the St Finan’s building and it is considered that the elements specified to be retained are not overly restrictive and do not impinge on the ability of this structure to be retained and renovated
for a variety of uses. Kerry County Council offers a comprehensive pre-planning service and looks forward to meeting and engaging with the owners or prospective owners of the building with regard to its renovation,” said a Council official.

Now that’s what we call dedication!
With over 41 years volunteering as a research biologist Áine Ní Shúilleabháin is the longest serving volunteer in Killarney National Park.
Áine is dedicated to the recording of valuable scientific data on waterfowl and water quality in Killarney National Park. Her research has been an invaluable source of material with recordings dating back to 1982. Her contribution, observing ecosystems, and reports on her findings will be recognised for generations to come.
Áine’s ‘wingman’ is boatman and co-counter, John Michael Lyne, who operates from Muckross Boathouse. John’s knowledge of the lakes and interest in wildlife is remarkable. Generations of John Michael’s family have been involved with Muckross and Killarney
National Park. The day on the lakes, John Michael, Áine and bird expert and National Parks and Wildlife Conservation Ranger, Sam Bayley, observed, nesting Herons, ringed Mute Swans, Golden Eye pair, an Egret, Cormorants, Irish Red Deer Hinds by the shoreline, and a White Tailed Eagle in the distance.
"It’s a wonderful privilege to be working in Killarney National Park, the Rangers are so open and welcoming," Áine said.
"I first came to the Park in 1974, working with Dan Kelleher and the late Paudie O’Leary, and then on contract from 1976-1984. My supervisor suggested that I link my work as a fresh water biolo-
gist looking at the lake water quality with my great interest in wildlife ecology and management, that’s how I started doing the waterfowl counts.”
The project was spearheaded by prof John Bracken, Zoology Department UCD.
When Áine was appointed Senior Fisheries Environmental Officer in Donegal and Cavan (1982-2008), she still found time to travel to Killarney and carry out her bird counts.
“Being involved in waterfowl counts and waterfowl research in the Killarney National Park, alongside the great staff, so committed and knowledgeable from Dan Kelleher to the current management and staff, Éamonn Meskell, Danny O’Keeffe, and the great team of Conservation Rangers, and Sam Bayley being
the bird expert, is such a privilege for me.”
After retiring, Áine returned to Kerry and Glenflesk became her home place. She immersed herself helping Glenflesk GAA Club, with her strong Kerry roots she served as Club PRO and now as Health Club Officer. She was appointed to the role of Kerry County Board Children’s Officer, a role she is very proud to hold. As she says she is in a unique position volunteering.
"It’s unique having a long series of data going from 1982 to 2023, that’s because of the commitment from past and present staff and for me to continue to work as a volunteer is a wonderful privilege. It’s great to be out in nature, in such a beautiful place, so many different ecosystems and great wildlife.”
Strong Kerry representation for World Championships
Four East Kerry athletes will represent Ireland in the upcoming World Multisport Championships in Ibiza next month.
Declan O’Donoghue, Alan Cronin, Diarmuid O’Sullivan and Michael Kennedy have successfully qualified as members of the Irish Triathlon Team and the Irish Aquabike Team and will represent both county and country on May 7 next. Through what has been a gruelling 18 month preparation period for the men, it is with great pride that they represent their country.
In addition to this fantastic privilege of being part of an Irish team, Declan has
been selected as the Irish captain of the 25 strong athlete team. He, along with Diarmuid, will contend in the Triathlon race that is composed of a 3km swim, 120km cycle and 30km run. Alan and Michael are part of the Aquabike team who will contend in a 3km swim and 120km cycle.
Declan, who is the founder of Triumph Coaching Killarney, has also been instrumental in the coaching of athletes from all over Ireland who have been successful in qualifying for the Irish team - six of the current Irish team have been coached by Declan.

If you missed the premiere of '1000km of Chaos', then fear not, you have two more opportunities to see the film.
The story of Arctic Ultra marathon runner, Killarney man Kevin Leahy, and what it takes to prepare for and complete two 500km non-stop foot races in the Arctic, will once again be shown in Killarney Cinema, on April 28 and May 5.
Temperatures dip as low as -45°C with Kevin travelling on foot, dragging everything required behind him on a sled, day and night, through sleep deprivation, hunger, exhaustion and the constant imminent threat of frostbite and hypothermia. The races pose a very real threat to his health, his safety and sometimes his sanity. There is no prize money, no gold medal or worldwide acclaim.
Starting with record breaking runs across mountaintops in Kerry, followed up with a sub 24hr completion of The Kerry Way Ultra Marathon and culminating in 2 x 500km Arctic Ultra Races; The Montane Yukon Arctic Ultra and The Montane Lapland Arctic Ultra, both races just three weeks apart. Filmed over two years by Adrian Mc-
Carthy, against the challenging restrictions of the pandemic, this test of body, mind and spirit takes place in some of the most beautiful, remote and harsh conditions in Ireland, The Yukon and Swedish Lapland. Providing a deep insight into what it takes for an amateur Irish Ultra Runner to train, prepare for and complete the toughest challenge anyone could imagine.
"We were blown away by the support we received locally and are delighted to be able to show the film exclusively in Killarney again," Kevin told the Killarney Advertiser.
Adrian added that it has been an "amazing few years" filming everything Kevin has managed to achieve both in Kerry and the Arctic.
"It was a story I felt needed to be told, and was lucky that it all came together so well despite all the challenges."

Jamesie Casey set for fight of his life
| By Sean MoriartyA young Killarney boxer is on the brink of the biggest fight of his prodigious career.
Jamesie Casey (14) from Hazlewood Drive will fight for the All Ireland ‘Boys 4’ title in the National Stadium in Dublin on Friday night.
He will face Martin Sweeney of the Galway-based Olympic Boxing Club in the title decider.
Casey won his quarter final and semi – both by unanimous decision – last weekend. He beat Ulster champion Liam Ward in Sunday’s semi.
Casey has previously won the ‘Boys 3’ and ‘Boys Cadet’ title but faces one of his toughest rivals ever this weekend.
Sweeney’s club mates include sister Aoife and World Boxing Champion Lisa O'Rourke and Olympic hopeful Gabriel Dossen.
“I am feeling very good, I am very sharp and very fit,” he told the Killarney Advertiser.
His Connacht champion rival has not fought in the National Stadium before –something Casey hopes to capitalise on.
“I am used to the stadium and the atmosphere after last weekend, I got rid of the ring rust.”
Casey is not the only boxer competing in the National Stadium this weekend.
Leah Sheehan is boxing in the ‘Girls 4’ 66kg class final while Newbridge-based Killarney fighter Alana O’Brien will contest the ‘Girls 4’ 49kg final on Friday too.

A total of 42 young Killarney Celtic players enjoyed the experience of a lifetime during a trip to Italy last week.
They participated in a friendship tournament in Verrés, a beautiful Aosta Valley village, located to the north-west of Turin in Italy and also enjoyed the culture and friendship.
Flying from Dublin to Milan Malpensa before completing the journey to Verrés by bus, they were accompanied by 21 adult club members and coaches with two Celtic teams competing – with successful outcomes – against the locals in Under 13 and Under 14 blitz-style tournaments. As well as daily training sessions, they also had an exciting coaching clinic and a questions and answers session with legendary Italian soccer star Moreno Torricelli, who won three Italian titles, the UEFA Cup and the Champions League with Juventus and was man-of-thematch in the 1996 Champions League final. He also played for Fiorentina and was part of the Italy squad for Euro '96 and the 1998 World Cup.
The Killarney contingent also took in a Serie A clash between José Mourinho’s AS Roma and Torino in the Olimpico di Torino which the visitors won 1-0. As the Alpine province of Verrés is very close to the Italy-France border, and many of the travelling party are studying French in secondary school in Killarney, a full hour of French lessons was organised on each of the five days.
One of the most entertaining events of the visit was a seven-a-side clash between the visiting Killarney Celtic coaches and parents and a local team, starring the Mayor of Verrés, and despite romping into a 3-0 lead, the Celtic representatives were eventually hauled back and the game ended 3-3.
GREAT EXPERIENCE
The visiting party from Killarney also en-
joyed sightseeing tours to ski resorts and cable car rides in the Alps and, to mark their visit, they were afforded the full VIP treatment when the town square was closed off and a street party and open air disco were held in their honour with souvenir medals presented to the Celtic players by the mayor.
The travelling party was accommodated, free of charge, in campus-style chalets and the visit was supported by a generous €700 donation to Celtic by Kerry County Council under the Community Support Fund.
The club also organised a number of fundraising initiatives – including a quiz night, a cake sale, collecting acorns in the National Park and stewarding for an adventure race – to help offset some of the flight costs and expenses.
The main organiser of the trip was Killarney architect Davide Mosca who is a native of Verrés, and he was joined by Celtic vice chairman Paul Sherry and long-time club official Mikey Lyne in an advance party which travelled out to ensure everything was ready for the Celtic visitors when they arrived.
“It was a very positive experience and all the Celtic party enjoyed themselves thoroughly. We were treated like royalty,” Paul Sherry explained.
“We hope to arrange an Erasmus-style educational exchange between the two locations and it certainly helped to create great new friendships and bonds for the kids which will stand to them going forward,” he said.
Celtic officials intend to reciprocate the visit by hosting children from Verrés in Killarney next year and, hopefully, start an annual trip experience for different age groups for boys and girls in the coming years.

Glenflesk are Munster Scór na nÓg champions
Glenflesk Ballad Group came out on top in the Munster Scór na nÓg finals held on Saturday.
| By Michelle CreanThe County Cork venue of the Eire Og GAA Pavilion, Ovens was the setting for the event with the hall packed to capacity.
The large audience were treated to a fantastic evening's entertainment from the club representatives of the six participating counties which this year marked the 50th Anniversary of Scór na nÓg.
Kerry were involved in all eight disciplines and their huge band of supporters had plenty to cheer about as the day panned out. The day's activities got underway with the first part of the Trath na gCeist. Kerry were represented by Tralee Parnells and after a very competitive and close discipline in stage one the Kerry boys came in first place; then three clubs; Kerry, Cork and Tipperary out of the five teams went forward to the stage events and having already qualified for the national finals it was a matter of who would be Munster champions; but Cork turned the tables on Tralee Parnells to claim the title by a single point.
Spa, Killarney renowned for their dancing skills at Rince Seit have once again entered the winners enclosure and after last year's success, they will be striving to make it two in a row of national titles. On this occasion it just proved a bridge too far as Piarsaigh na Dromoda were represented in both; Rince Foirne agus Nuachleas with 'The Yanks' and certainly didn’t leave their county down, nor did
Norin Ní Eili from Glenflesk in Anhranaoicht with 'Sweet Inniscara' and in Aithriseoireacht Gobnait Ní Chroinion reciting 'Mary Ann McGee'.
"It was a great honour for Coiste Scór in the county to have so much success and also so many involved at this stage of the competition and all the participants can feel proud of their performances, they did both their respective clubs and county proud on the day, and on behalf of Coiste Scór Ciarrai we wish all the very best in their quest for national glory on May 6 at the INEC Killarney at 3pm."

“People make sure that they prepare their cars for the NCT test, which becomes very important particularly as the vehicles get older, but how many take the same care of their health?" Chairman
of Dr Crokes GAA, Matt O’Neill, said. Over five Tuesdays on April 18 and 25, and May 2 and 9, there’ll also be activity sessions for senior adults both men and women at 11am in Dr Crokes Clubhouse, Lewis Rd.
“As people age limbs get stiffer, but age-appropriate gentle exercises do wonders for increased mobility. The highly qualified instructor will also provide adapted exercises which will be done while sitting in a chair to be replicated at home at later stages.”
Then there’ll be a friendly chat over tea/ coffee and the social spinoff.
“The social aspect of all sessions in the very comfortable warm Dr Crokes Clubhouse now powered by the new eco-friendly solar energy, is central to these health promoting ventures. All sessions will end with the friendly cuppa and the ideal opportunity for a confidential personal chat with those presenters on their journeys of hope and recovery.”

Commemoration of deaths of three civilians in Milltown during the Civil War
A commemoration is to be held in Milltown next month to remember three local civilians who died during the Civil War.
The deaths of Jeremiah Hanifin, Jeremiah McKenna and Mary McKenna in separate incidents during 1922 represented almost one quarter of all the civilian casualties in County Kerry during the Civil War. Organised by local historian and author, Owen O’Shea, and with the support of the Milltown Community and Chamber Alliance, a memorial plaque will be unveiled at the Square in Milltown on Sunday, May 7 at 12 noon.
"In all wars, the toll on civilians is often forgotten and overlooked. During the Civil War, a total of 14 civilians lost their lives in Kerry. It is important that they are remembered and not forgotten as we approach the centenary of the end of the Civil War," said Owen.
Father of 10, Jeremiah Hanifin was talk-
ing to a neighbour outside his home near Farran Cross, Milltown in September 1922 when a Free State army patrol passed by. Shots were fired indiscriminately and Hanifin was mortally wounded. Two months later at Kilderry near the village, mother and son Mary and Jeremiah McKenna died when they were fired upon following an ambush of a Free State army cycling patrol. All three were innocent bystanders with no apparent connections to the conflict.
"Thankfully, my home town of Milltown was spared much of the viciousness and brutality of the Civil War which impacted communities in many other parts of Kerry. There were, for example, no known fatalities among natives of Milltown in the ranks of the Free State army or the
Arts Act Grants and Artist Bursaries Awarded
The Kerry County Council Arts Office received great interest in their annual funding call out for 2023.

The independent adjudication panel were very impressed with the standard of the applications, awarding 28 Arts Act Grants to the value of €35,000 and 25 Artist Bursaries to the value of €22,000. Recipients of the Arts Act Grant include; Ballybunion Arts Festival, Tralee Art Group, Spraoi Chiarraí, K-FEST, Dingle Lit and the Spike Players. The schools which were awarded funding are Gaelscoil Lios Tuathail, Clogher National School and St. Brigid’s Secondary School. The Arts Act Grants and Artist Bursaries are funded by Kerry County Council.

"Sadly however, three innocent civilians became victims of the dreadful war, which claimed the lives of a total of 14 civilians and over 150 combatants in Kerry. It is important that we remember and commemorate those who died during this dark period in our history, be they combatant or civilian."
The commemoration ceremony will feature a short address by Owen on the Civil War in Milltown and the unveiling of a stone plaque to the memory of the three people who died, by local councillor and Cathaoirleach of the Castleisland-Corca Dhuibhne Municipal District, Cllr Michael O’Shea.

INSPIRED BY DANNY CASEYOne dead as New York car park collapses
At least one person has been killed in a multi-storey car park collapse in New York City this week.
All five of the buildings’ floors collapsed without warning on Tuesday afternoon on Ann Street near Nassau Street at around 4pm.
The New York Fire Department were able to rescue five of the six workers they believe were trapped inside the building at the time, but a sixth person reportedly died.
The FDNY Chief said that the rescue operation was “very dangerous” and that “the building was continuing to collapse” as firefighters conducted searches via drone and robotic dog. While the building’s interior almost entirely collapsed in on itself, the exterior remained largely undamaged. Officials have asked for New Yorkers to avoid the area, and an investigation into why the building collapsed is underway, according to the city’s mayor.

Hutch found not guilty
Gerard ‘The Monk’ Hutch has been found not guilty of the murder of David Byrne in a Dublin city centre hotel seven years ago.
Following a 52-day trial which concluded on Monday afternoon, Gerard Hutch was found not guilty of the murder which happened in February 2016. The
case, specifically, was for his presence at the shooting as an active shooter, not for his participation in planning of the event. This comes after several issues were brought up with the evidence provided by the prosecution during the trial.
Former Sinn Féin councillor Jonathan
video of the harrowing ordeal, explained that the garage is usually "super quiet" with "nothing happening over there except cars being parked".
"I heard this incredible noise around 4 o'clock this afternoon and I was wondering what that was so I went to the window and I just saw the top floor of this garage...just beginning to cave in and cars just falling into this pit," Guerra told News 4 New York. "I was just in shock. I heard people on the street just screaming and yelling for other people to get out."
AI-generated image wins world photography award
A German photographer who won a prestigious Sony world photography award has refused to take his prize.
Eldagsen's black and white Artificial Intelligence (AI) image was a portrait of two women from different generations. Boris Eldagsen says it was a “historic moment” entering it into the competition and that he wanted to provoke debate about how the industry is changing. "We, the photo world, need an open discussion,” said Eldagsen. “A discussion about what we want to consider photography and what not. Is the umbrella of photography large enough to invite AI images to enter – or would this be a mistake? With my refusal of the award I hope to speed up this debate. How many of you knew or suspected that it was AI generated? Something about this doesn’t feel right, does it? AI images and photography should not compete with each other in an award like this. They are different entities. AI is not photography. Therefore I will not accept the award.”
Dowdall made two major allegations toward Mr Hutch. The first is that a day before the attack that killed Byrne, Dowdall and his father had given Hutch a key card for a room in the Regency Hotel, where the attack took place. The second allegation stated that Mr Hutch and Dowdall met in a park in Whitehall a few days after the attack, where Hutch apparently admitted to having been present at the Regency and having shot Mr Byrne with another man.
A spokesperson for the World Photography Organisation said that they are "looking forward to engaging in a more in-depth discussion on this topic and welcomed Boris’ wish for dialogue by preparing questions for a dedicated Q&A with him for our website".
“As he has now decided to decline his award we have suspended our activities with him and in keeping with his wishes have removed him from the competition."
Eldagsen suggested donating the prize to a photo festival hosted in Odesa, Ukraine.
Hospital overcrowding is "out of control" in Cork City
The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation has called for a bespoke plan to tackle overcrowding in Cork City as records were broken this week.
On Tuesday, Cork University Hospital had 92 admitted while and Mercy University Hospital had 40 - a total of 132 patients without a bed across both sites. 613 patients were being treated on a trolley or chair nationwide during the same time period.
Ride Dingle a success once again in West Kerry
Over 2,500 cyclists descended on Dingle last Saturday for Ride Dingle’s annual 55km and 120km cycles.
Popular with cyclists from all over the country for its stunning route along the Dingle Peninsula, Ride Dingle cyclists are treated to uninterrupted views of iconic Irish landmarks such as Skellig Michael, the Blasket Islands, Conor Pass, Slea Head and the historical fishing port of Dingle. Despite the rain and winds blowing in from the Atlantic, cyclists took shelter at the food stops en-route, as well as enjoying refreshments and a warm-up at the finish in Paul Geaney’s Bar.
Ride Dingle partners with Dingle Peninsula Tourism to promote cycle tourism, working with local suppliers, producers and accommodation providers in the overall promotion of the event. Ride Dingle is also proud to make a significant annual contribution to local charities, which last year totalled €30,000.
This year’s event saw the return of the former Mayor of West Springfield Ed Sullivan, who enjoyed completing the cycle with friends and family, in recognition of Dingle’s long-standing ties with Springfield, Massachusetts and the relocation of residents to the area from Dingle and the Blasket Islands.
For the second year running, it was possible to complete the event on an electric bike, making Ride Dingle accessible to a wide audience of varying abilities and fitness levels, and those who otherwise may not have had the opportunity to
complete the event alongside friends and family.
“We are delighted to return to West Kerry for Ride Dingle this year," event organiser
Oliver Kirwan from Elite Event Management said.
"As always, we’ve worked hard with Dingle Cycling Club to manage the smooth delivery of this event, whilst ensuring it continues to create opportunities locally and contribute to local charities. The event provides an excellent opportunity to swell visitor numbers in Dingle and show off the best the Wild Atlantic Way has to offer. We are fortunate to be able to reach a wider audience through our connection with Dingle Peninsula Tourism, including through the participation of the Mayor of West Springfield, American Sister City to the Dingle Peninsula. A huge thank you to our volunteers and marshals who did an outstanding job as usual.”
Ride Dingle would like to thank Cono Sur Bicicleta Wines for sponsoring Ride Dingle this year. They are proud to be a B-Corp certified company who prioritise eco-friendly practices in their wine production, and believe that doing things
‘The Sustainable Way’ is key to creating a better future for all. They are excited to recognise those who share their passion for sustainability through their sponsorship of Ride Dingle.
Organisers Elite Event Management and Dingle Cycling Club are looking forward to staging Ride Dingle again next year with a provisional date of Saturday, April 6 2024.
“Overcrowding in both major hospitals in Cork has become out of hand, with records being broken in both Cork University Hospital and the Mercy," INMO Assistant Director of Industrial Relations for the Southern Region, Colm Porter, said. "It is clear now that this warrants a national response from the Health Service Executive. The situation in Cork University Hospital is continuing to deteriorate week on week. Our members are under significant pressure across all wards. The bed deficit that currently exists in CUH is impacting the ability of our members to carry out the safe care they have been trained to provide to patients. Immediate engagement is required to ensure that discharge facilities are available in the community and that all capacity that can be used from the private sector is being deployed.”
INMO Industrial Relations Officer, Liam
Conway added that the conditions in the Mercy University Hospital over the last two weeks "have proved to be intolerable for nurses".
"There are real concerns for nurse safety when it comes to fire safety and infection control due to the levels of overcrowding. Our members are calling it for what it is inside the Mercy – dangerous. Patients are being cared for near exit doors and in areas blocking fire safety equipment, this is not acceptable. As well as a national response from the HSE, the hospital and the South/Southwest Hospital Group is required on de-escalation protocols and the cancellation of all non-urgent elective care. “
“Outstanding Irish diplomat” attacked in his home in Sudan
Tánaiste Micheál Martin has expressed his concerns following an attack on an Irish ambassador in his home in Sudan.
The attack in Khartoum on EU ambassador to Sudan Aidan O’Hara has caused concern from several figures in both the wider European Parliament and Irish Government. This comes as conflict between paramilitary groups and the country’s military for control of the nation continues to wreck the capital.
Both Josep Borrell, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, and Tánaiste Micheál Martin have expressed concern about the incident, saying that it “constitutes a gross violation of the Vienna Convention” and that “Security of diplomatic premises and staff is a primary responsibility of Sudanese authorities and an obligation under international law”. The Department of Foreign Affairs
has said it has been in contact with Mr O’Hara following the incident, and has stated that he was “OK” after the incident and was not seriously hurt. 58-year-old Mr O’Hara had previously acted as the EU ambassador to Dijibouti and Ireland’s ambassador to Ethiopia, before being appointed as the EU ambassador to Sudan last year.

'Rough Diamonds' is an 8-part crime drama that follows the struggles and strife of the Wolfsons, a prominent ultra-Orthodox Jewish family within Antwerp’s world-famous diamond industry. When their youngest son takes his own life, his long-estranged brother Noah – who turned his back on his religion and made a new home
within the criminal fraternity of London – returns to Antwerp and finds out that the family business is on the brink of collapse and under the heel of the local mob. While Noah desperately attempts to save the Wolfsons’ business and protect the family's legacy and honour, he and his siblings must first settle their own internal battles.
Homecoming
Author: Kate MortonJess is a journalist in search of a story. After 20 years of living and working in London, she’s been laid off from her job and is struggling to make ends meet, until a phone call brings her to Sydney, where her grandmother, Nora, has been raced to hospital after a bad fall.
Upon arriving, she’s alarmed to find her once decisive grandmother frail and confused, and learns from her housekeeper that she’d seemed distracted in the weeks before, and had fallen from the stairs to the attic, a part of her home Jess had been forbidden from entering as a child.
Upon investigating her grandmother’s home, Jess finds a true crime book about a long buried tragedy surrounding a shocking murder from 1959, one which she finds her family has a shocking connection to. With the crime unsolved to this day, a cold case might just be what Jess needs to take her journalist’s mind off

Metallica ‘72 Seasons’
American rock band Metallica returned with their 11th studio album this week. The 77 minute album was written over the course of the COVID pandemic by James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich. It was named for the 72 seasons that make up the first 18 years of a person's life, the years that form their images of who they are.
Produced by Greg Fidelman, the band plays with purpose and meaning throughout each of the 12 songs featured in the album’s run.
Metallica, currently comprised of James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett and Robert Trujillo, have been teasing the album since November last year, releasing songs from the album and playing others through duets on TikTok.
The songs featured in the album, such as the titular ’72 Seasons’ and ‘Screaming Suicide’, have been described by some as "genuinely moving" and "tormented and bleak".
everything that’s happened… Spanning generations, 'Homecoming' explores the damaging nature of tightly-held secrets, how we protect those lies and just what we’d do for the people we love.

Killarney to host Opel enthusiasts’ road run
Kerry-based Opel and Vauxhall enthusiasts will meet in Killarney next month ahead of their annual road run.
The Opel/Vauxhall Run Kerry and the additional Manta Fest 2023 will start from the Killarney Heights Hotel on May 14 at 9am.
Once all drivers are signed on they will head off on a tour of famous South Kerry rally roads.
The event was originally supposed to run on May 7 but there is a potential clash
with a Munster final in Killarney so it was decided to move it out one week.
The route includes Moll’s Gap, Ballaghbeama Gap and Caragh Lake.
Last year the event attracted nearly 80 cars but with the addition of the Manta Fest that figures is likely to be exceeded this year.
“We are hoping to have the most amount of Opel Mantas in the one place,” said local Opel enthusiast Paul Horan. Donations will be made on the day to a yet to be nominated charity.
“I have lost a best friend" Paul Nagle and Killarney pay tribute to Craig Breen
Tributes have been paid in Killarney to World Rally Championship star Craig Breen who died tragically in a testing accident in Croatia last Thursday.
| By Sean MoriartyThe Waterford man was a hugely popular figure in Kerry and that is reflected in the glowing tributes that have been paid to the 33-year-old.
Breen had several connections to the county and as a result, he was a frequent visitor to the area.
His father Ray has strong family connections to the Strand Road area of Tralee. His best results as a WRC driver came with Killarney man Paul Nagle by his side. The pair did over 50 rallies together all over the world, and highlights include winning the Irish Tarmac Rally Championship in 2019 and finishing third overall in the world-famous Monte Carlo Rally last season.
Breen had nine World Rally Championship podiums to his name and the Aghadoe man was beside him for six of those. They won rallies all over Europe including the 2019 Ypres Rally in Belgium which is considered the biggest rally in that country, and several Italian rally championship events, one of the highlights was their victory in the fabled Rallye Sanremo.
Breen’s last official engagement in Ireland was last Tuesday when he attended a promotional day for young junior drivers in County Galway, two days before the ill-fated test in Croatia.
“The world has lost a hero. Ireland has
lost a champion and I have lost a best friend. Craig was more than a rally driver to [my wife] Cathy and I, he was family,” said Paul.
“The motorsport world is in mourning because Craig touched so many lives and homes. From grassroots rallying on Tuesday to World Rally Championship testing on Thursday just shows the character you were. He was a clubman at heart. Our journey was amazing, filled with fun, laughter, tears, and the craic. Thank you for the memories, they will last a lifetime. I am going to miss you.”
Breen and Nagle won the 2019 Rally of the Lakes.
Dermot Healy was the Clerk of the Course on that occasion.
“He was a huge supporter of our events, he loved the craic and the stages down here,” said Dermot. “A big factor was his navigator Paul Nagle and he helped Paul realise his dream of winning the Rally of the Lakes and the Killarney Historic Rally. He was always an absolute gentleman to deal with, I cannot speak highly enough about the guy.”
Nagle was not his only Kerry co-driver. His Aghadoe neighbour Mikie Galvin contested the Wexford Rally with Craig in 2021.
“I was absolutely devastated about the news,” said Galvin.
“I was always thankful for that [Wexford] opportunity. From there we became quite friendly and kept in contact quite a bit and I was always looking forward to doing something again with him, but sadly that won't happen now.”
Breen possessed an encyclopaedic knowledge of the sport and the characters involved in it.
It was something that Galvin witnessed first-hand in Wexford.
“One of the most striking things about Craig was, I couldn't believe that day in Wexford how he knew everything about everybody and their rally and what they were doing. He was genuinely interested in everybody. I just couldn't get over how he knew everything about everyone. He
was really connected with everybody. He must have been talking to hundreds of people every single day because he knew about people “
Craig’s most recent visit to Kerry was in February for the Killarney Forestry Rally where he launched and funded a Junior Rally Championship support project for young Irish drivers.
He was also in Kerry for the Kingdom of Kerry Rally Championship prizegiving night over the Christmas period last year. Breen was laid to rest in his native Slieverue, County Waterford on Tuesday. He is survived by his father Ray, mother Jackie and sister Kellie, extended family, and a large circle of friends inside and outside the motorsport world.

MTU announce new Veterinary Nursing course
MTU has this week announced a new course available at the Kerry Campus from September.
The Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Veterinary Nursing is a three-year Level 7 programme. This is an exciting development for the School of STEM, building on the success of programmes in Veterinary Bioscience, Wildlife Biology, Animal Bioscience, Agricultural Science, Pharmacy Technician and Pharmaceutical Science. Commenting on the new programme, Dr Gerard Corkery, Head of Department, Biological and Pharmaceutical Sciences said, the BSc in Veterinary Nursing at the Kerry Campus will prepare students to become competent and accountable veterinary nurses. This programme has a strong educational basis, integrated with professional skills to equip graduates for a career in the field of Veterinary Nursing. Students will gain a strong foundation in the principles of veterinary nursing through a blend of traditional learning methods coupled with the use of immersive technology. Opportunities to apply scientific principles in practicals and workshops are embedded throughout the on-campus delivery and in veterinary
practice work placement during the second and third year of the programme. All relevant practical competencies will be covered in relation to dogs, cats, horses, farm animals and exotic species.
“We are delighted to announce this new programme to add to our suite of STEM programmes in Kerry," Dr Eilish Broderick, Head of School of STEM, said.
"The delivery of this programme will be based on the development of four pillars of student development; Core Science and Clinical Knowledge, Veterinary Nursing knowledge, Practical Veterinary Nursing Skills Development and Professionalism of a Veterinary Nurse. This course, as with all our courses, has been developed in close collaboration and consultation with industry and practicing vets in the region. Graduates of this programme will help to meet the growing demand veterinary nurses across the county and beyond."
The course is now available through CAO. ie under the code MT784. Late applications are open until 5pm on May 1 and the Change of Mind deadline is 5pm on July 1. For more information on the course visit www.mtu.ie/courses/mt784/.

Apprenticeships
What is an apprenticeship?
An apprenticeship is how people are trained in a craft trade or profession. You can get training in a traditional craft apprenticeship such as plumbing or carpentry or new apprenticeships such as accounting technician.
An apprenticeship programme provides on-the-job training with an employer along with off-the-job training in an education centre. You can start an apprenticeship from age 16 to 18 years depending on the apprenticeship programme.
An apprenticeship can last two to four years, during which time you will spend some time in off-the-job training. When you complete an apprenticeship programme, you will get a recognised qualification at Level 5 or above on the NFQ framework.
Types of apprenticeships
The main craft trades and professions are set by SOLAS, employers and unions.
A craft apprenticeship will generally last for four years, during which time you will spend three different periods in offthe-job training. Craft apprenticeships include carpentry, plumbing, motor mechanics and electrical apprenticeships. Apprenticeships introduced from 2016 on lead to an award between Levels 5-10 on the National Framework of Qualifications. Each apprenticeship programme is between two and four years. Funding supports for apprenticeships
The Traveller Apprenticeship Incentivisation Programme pilot project offers bursaries for members of the Traveller community to access apprenticeships. Certain employers who provide apprenticeships can get an apprenticeship employers grant of €2,000 per year for each registered apprentice. Employers can also avail of a gender-based bursary.
Apprenticeship fees
Generally, an apprentice does not pay fees. However, apprentices pay a pro-rata registration fee (student contribution) if their off-the-job training takes place within a college such as an Institute of Technology or Technological University. The registration fee is generally based on the amount of time the apprentice spends in the college. Apprentices are not eligible for the student grant.
Apprenticeship wages and allowances
Rates of apprenticeship wages and allowances can vary depending on the type of apprenticeship and the industry you have chosen:
• Apprenticeships developed before 2016
While you are training on the job, your
employer will pay you a recommended apprenticeship wage. The ETB pay a weekly allowance equivalent to that wage while you are training off the job.
• Apprenticeships developed in 2016 and after
Your employer will pay you for the duration of the apprenticeship. The rate of pay is agreed between you and your employer.
• Annual leave
Your statutory holiday entitlements continue to accrue during the off-thejob phases, but must be taken during the on-the-job phases at times agreed with your employer.
• Apprentices who have children
Working Family Payment (WFP) is a weekly tax-free payment for employees with children. If you are an apprentice and you have at least one child you may qualify for WFP, if you meet the conditions for WFP. Contact your local CIC for more details.
Other allowances
You should check with your employer or local ETB if you are entitled to any allowances such as a Tool Allowance.
How to qualify for an apprenticeship
You must be at least 16 years of age and have a minimum of grade D in five subjects in the Junior Cycle or equivalent exam. However, higher educational qualifications and other requirements may be required by employers. If you don’t have these qualifications, you may still register as an apprentice with an employer if you:
Complete an approved preparatory training course followed by an assessment interview.
Are over 18 years of age and have at least three years of relevant work experience, in which case you will also be asked to do an assessment interview. You will be asked to pass a colour-vision test for some apprenticeships.
How to apply for an apprenticeship
You can find apprenticeship jobs for craft and new apprenticeships on apprenticeship.ie. Apply directly to the employer before the closing date. If you are interested in a craft apprenticeship, you can also contact the Apprenticeship Section of your local ETB for details about applying.
For anyone needing information, advice or have an advocacy issue, you can call a member of the local Citizens Information team on 0818 07 7860. The offices are staffed from Monday to Friday from 10am to 4pm. Alternatively you can email on tralee@citinfo.ie or log on to www. citizensinformation.ie for further information.

2ND ANNIVERSARY HICKEY
In loving memory of A beloved Husband and Father Johnny Hickey
Late of Riverside drive, Killarney
Who passed away on 24th April 2021.
“Remembering Johnny”
Today’s the anniversary of the day that we lost you. The moment you left us our hearts split in two.
One side filled with memories the other side died with you.
I lay awake at night when the world is fast asleep and walk down memory lane with tears upon my cheek.
Remembering you is easy we do it everyday but missing you is a heartache that never goes away.
No one knows the heartache
That lies behind our smiles
No one knows how many times
We have broken down and cried.
We hold you tightly within our hearts And pray that god will give us strength
To get us through this struggle with the heartache that came when we lost you.
Daddy, we love you and miss you
Sending you lots of hugs and kisses. Love you always and forever.
Your heart broken wife Jennifer and your beautiful children Alyson, Laura & Conor xxx
Anniversary Mass is on Saturday 22nd April at 6.15pm In St. Mary’s Cathedral, Killarney.

Who died on 24th April 2021.
In life we loved you dearly
In death we do the same
It broke our hearts to lose you

For part of us went with you
The day God called you home.
You left us wonderful memories
Your love is still our guide
And though we cannot see you
You are always at our side.
Our family chain is broken and nothing seems the same But as God calls us one by one The chain will link again.
Loved Always and forever in our hearts.xxx

2ND ANNIVERSARY HICKEY In loving memory of A dear son
Johnny Hickey
Late of Riverside Drive, Killarney
Who died on 24th April 2021.
There is pain beyond imagining That’s burning in our hearts
For suddenly our whole world Has been cruelly ripped apart.
And when we look for reasons
And ask the question why?
It makes no sense at all
That one so special had to die.
The only source of comfort
Are our memories and our love
And they will shine forever
Like the brightest star above.
If tears were a stairway to heaven And loneliness a lane
I’d wait at the gate to meet you Son
And bring you home again.
Always loved and sadly missed by your Mom and Dad.

SPORT
TIPP TOP SHAPE O’Brien, Ó Beaglaoich and Breen ready for action
When the 2023 season started in earnest with that rough defeat to Cork in the McGrath Cup back in January, we had a fair idea that it would take some time before we’d see a full-strength Kerry side in action. Thankfully, it appears as though that day has finally arrived.
Notwithstanding the significant injuries sustained by Darragh Roche (thumb) and Stefan Okunbor (hamstring) in early March, things have been steadily moving in the right direction for Jack O’Connor in terms of player availability. As the league progressed, Seánie O’Shea, Graham O’Sullivan, Gavin White, Paul Geaney and Diarmuid O’Connor returned to the fold. (The latter appears to be in serious physical shape; he has clearly spent some time in the weights room in recent months.)
Now, three more potential starters are back in the mix. Stephen O’Brien, the veteran half forward who played a key role in the All-Ireland final win over Galway, has recovered from a knee injury.
Brian Ó Beaglaoich, a vital cog in last year’s machine, has overcome a calf problem. And Mike Breen, the talented, made-for-intercounty defender who has been dogged by hamstring issues, is also good to go.
This will be music to the ears of Kerry fans who had to endure a rocky Division 1 campaign that offered little by way of encouragement. The reigning champions failed to win consecutive matches (P7 W3 L4) and they were closer to relegation than a league final when all was said and done.
The start of the championship provides a clean slate and O’Connor and his coaching team of Diarmuid Murphy, Mike Quirke and Paddy Tally will be hoping that their mid-season training camp in Portugal will have them firing on all cylinders when the ball is thrown in on Saturday.
The return of Ó Beaglaoich, O’Brien and
Breen makes for a difficult team selection ahead of the visit of Tipperary. You would suspect that O’Connor would like to get some kilometres into their legs and the Munster Championship should offer a relatively low-risk opportunity to do that. The problem is: who does he take out?
In defence, Jason Foley, Tom O’Sullivan, Tadhg Morley and Gavin White are certified starters. Graham O’Sullivan didn’t start Kerry’s last match (Dylan Casey, who is not available this weekend, took his place) so he might have a battle on his hands to get that No. 2 jersey. Ó Beaglaoich is capable of playing there or at
5. Paul Murphy held down that particular spot during the league but with ‘Begley’ and Breen back in contention, he has plenty of competition to contend with. As for O’Brien, he will be aiming to slip back into his left half forward berth. Luckily for him, Kerry have not nailed down a half forward line in his absence.
Seánie O’Shea, Paudie Clifford and David Clifford are the only guarantees up top with the likes of Tony Brosnan, Dara Moynihan, Adrian Spillane, Ruairí Murphy, Micheál Burns, Donal O’Sullivan, Killian Spillane, Geaney and O’Brien vying for the other three positions.
In goal, Shane Ryan is expected to get the nod, despite playing No. 2 to Shane Murphy in the last match against Galway.
Saturday’s opponents Tipperary had to fight all the way against Waterford in the previous round. Goals by Steven O’Brien, Stephen Quirke and Paudie Feehan proved crucial as they ran out 3-9 to 1-11 winners at Semple Stadium.

The draw for the round robin series will take place on Tuesday, May 2 - before the provincial finals are played.
The Kerry team won’t be looking beyond tomorrow’s Munster semi-final in Killarney but supporters are already dreaming of another big day out at the home of football.
Each team will have one home game in the new All-Ireland group stage and The Kingdom are guaranteed a spot in this round robin series after securing a fifthplace finish in Division 1.
If they win Munster, they will advance as a top seed and this could tee up a tantalising home match against an All-Ireland contender at the Fitzgerald Stadium.
MUNSTER
Victory against Tipperary tomorrow would set up a Munster final against Clare or Limerick on Sunday, May 7 with the decider expected to take place in Limerick regardless of the opposition. Kerry have an alternating home and away arrangement with Limerick that includes Munster finals. Last year Kerry hosted the Treaty in Killarney.
Kerry and Clare also have an alternating home and away arrangement but this
excludes Munster finals. The last two Munster finals between Kerry and Clare (1992 and 1997) took place at the Gaelic Grounds.
The Munster Championship itself remains unchanged in 2023 but the revamped Sam Maguire/Tailteann Cup structure means that things are a little more complicated thereafter. This year, for the first time ever, league standings will play a role in the championship.
The new format will see 16 counties competing for the Sam Maguire Cup while the remaining teams will take part in the Tailteann Cup.
The eight provincial finalists will advance to the All-Ireland round robin series (four groups of four) where they will be joined by last year’s Tailteann Cup winners Westmeath and the next seven highest ranked teams in this year’s National League.
This means that even if Kerry are defeated by Tipperary, they are still guaranteed a spot in the last 16 thanks to their fifthplace finish in Division 1. In this event, they can be drawn in any of the four
If Kerry reach the Munster final and lose, they will qualify for the round robin series as a provincial runner-up (second seed). They can be drawn in any group not containing the Munster champions.
If Kerry win Munster, they will advance to the round robin series as first seed. They will be joined in a group of four by a runner-up from another province and two other teams who will qualify via their league placing (or Westmeath).
INTERESTING
If they are a top seed, Kerry’s first match will be at home to the third seed on May 20/21. Recent results have made things very interesting here. League champions Mayo and 2021 All-Ireland champions Tyrone are now third seeds after getting dumped out of Connacht and Ulster by Roscommon and Monaghan respectively.
As Roscommon and Galway, who finished second and third in Division 1, face each other in the Connacht semi-final, the loser of this game will be classified as a third seed.
The final third seed will go to the next highest ranked team who fails to reach their provincial final. So, assuming that Kerry get to the Munster final, this will be Monaghan if they lose to Derry in the Ulster semi-final. If Monaghan win and Dublin fail to reach the Leinster final, Dublin will be a third seed. If Monaghan win and Dublin also get to the final of Leinster, the final third seed will be Derry. If Kerry are a first seed, their second match will be away to the fourth seed on June 3/4, and their third match will be against the group’s provincial runner-up at a neutral venue on June 17/18.
The top team in each group advances to the All-Ireland quarter-finals. Second and third in each group advance to the preliminary quarter-finals on June 24/25 with the second place teams getting home advantage. The fourth-place team in each group is eliminated.
The All-Ireland quarter-finals will be staged on July 1/2. The All-Ireland semi-finals will be staged on July 15/16. If the provincial champions qualify for the semi-finals then Munster will play Connacht and Leinster will play Ulster.
The All-Ireland final is fixed for Sunday, July 30.

All four Kerry teams who were in action this past week won their respective finals but pride of place goes to the Kerry ladies team.
| By Eamonn FitzgeraldDeclan Quill and Darragh Long’s side delivered the goods against Galway at Croke Park, winning the Lidl Division 1 league title after a double scores win (511 to 1-10). Local girl Kayleigh Cronin won Laoch na hImeartha, the heroine of the game. It is yet another distinction for the Dr Crokes and Kerry full back, who is already a reigning All-Star from 2022. Síofra O’Shea is a well-known sports star
in Killarney where we have seen her star with the St Paul’s basketball team. She was an Irish international from U15 right through to U18, but she put her basketball on hold to lead Kerry football’s march to the top. It was a marvellous achievement to come straight up from Division 2 and win Division 1. Special mention must go to Tralee men Long and Quill. Arch rivals in Tralee club football, they set that aside and have worked tirelessly for the past three years
to propel this team to All-Ireland standard. They are now celebrating the county’s first Division 1 title since 1991. Cronin, the star, was well supported by the ever-reliable stalwart Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh, top scorer Niamh Ní Chonchúir (2-1), Hannah O’Donoghue (1-3), Aishling O’Connell, Cáit Lynch, Niamh Carmody, Anna Galvin and captain O’Shea. The All-Star contingent had no problems with jetlag so soon after their transatlantic journey. How did they do it? Louise Galvin, who is used to doing a lot of travelling and playing from her Irish Rugby 7s days, gave the girls a lot of advice in terms of how to avoid jetlag: drink lots of water, take lots of protein, wear compression socks, walk around, and sleep as much as you can at the right times.
Mighty, mighty women. So far so good. Celebrations early this week and then the preparation for the other big one – the All-Ireland Championship – begins. They have a tough start against Waterford and strong opposition to face in Meath, Dublin, Galway and Cork.
For the record Kerry lined out as follows: Mary Ellen Bolger; Eilís Lynch, Kayleigh
Cronin, Ciara Murphy; Aishling O’Connell, Emma Costello, Cáit Lynch; Lorraine Scanlon (0-1), Mary O’Connell; Niamh Carmody (0-2), Niamh Ní Chonchúir (21), Anna Galvin (0-2); Hannah O’Donoghue (1-3), Síofra O’Shea (1-0), Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh (1-2, 0-2f). Subs: Amy Harrington for O’Connell, Louise Galvin for Costello, Aoife Dillane for Murphy, Fiadhna Tangney for O’Donoghue.
CAMOGIE GLORY
There was just one point in it at the finish in the Camogie League Division 2A final as Kerry defeated Meath on a scoreline of 1-12 to 0-14. The goal was decisive and it was scored by their best player Patrice Diggin, who bagged 1-5.
It’s not too often that Kerry camogie enthusiasts have their day in the sun at Croke Park. It all came right on Sunday last. Unlucky for Meath but unbridled joy for the Kerry ladies who had to stick with the tempo well into the seven minutes of injury time. There was little in it throughout as the side were level on no fewer than seven occasions.
Jacki Horgan (0-8) and Amy Minogue impressed for the girls in navy and green.

Elsewhere, the U16A ladies footballers defeated Cork in the Munster final, while the U16B team beat Tipperary in their provincial decider.
JOE McDONAGH CUP
The Joe McDonagh Cup has eluded the Kerry hurlers so far and it will not be
any bit easier this year in a highly competitive series where any of the teams can win or lose on a particular day.
Kerry were hoping for a home win at Tralee on Sunday last but had to settle for a draw with a gritty Carlow side. It ended all square on 21 points each. Kerry were five points in arrears after 45 minutes and had to depend on a last-minute point from Michael Leane to draw the game. Once again it was the steadiness and accuracy of Shane Conway that kept then in contention. He scored 11 points, four of these from play.
U20 FOOTBALL
Kerry were lucky to get away with a win in Tralee on Monday evening as they got the fright of their lives from a gallant Clare side who took them to extra time. They were very fortunate to survive and qualify to meet Cork in the Munster final in Cork on Monday, April 24.
Kerry were under the cosh throughout and after 80 minutes they escaped 1-20 to 4-9. They were exposed in defence, conceding four goals, and at midfield
where Brian McNamara lorded the exchanges for the Banner men. The underdogs really put the heart crossways on Kerry with a late goal and the final whistle brought relief to Kerry. Will Shine, the Legion full forward, was superb, scoring 10 points (five frees).
Rob Monahan also did well, but he was sent off late in the game for a straight red. Paud O’Leary was the pick of the defence.
This Kerry squad has been mediocre in all the preliminary games, and it will be a big test of new manager Tomás Ó Sé to ignite the passion which he displayed as a player to lift the morale for Monday next. Kerry have had a poor record at the U20/21 grade. Monday next will tell a lot.
KERRY: K Mackessy (Finuge); J Nagle (Austin Stacks), A Moynihan (Rathmore), C O’Donoghue (St Mary's); K O Sullivan (Glenflesk), A Heinrich (Austin Stacks), P O'Leary (Gneeveguilla); C Burke (Milltown/Castlemaine), C O’Connell (Castlegregory); R Monahan (Ardfert), T O’Donnell (Castlegregory), K Evans (Keel); A O Shea (Listry), W Shine (Killarney Legion), C McMahon (Dr Crokes). Subs: C Lynch (Glenflesk) for O’Connell; J Clifford (St Michael’s Foilmore) for O’Donnell; L Crowley (Glenflesk) for O’Shea; D O’Callaghan (Kilcummin) for O’Sullivan; J Kissane (Austin Stacks) for McMahon; A Segal (Ballyduff) for O’Leary; R Stack (Beale) for Burke; C Foley (Kilcummin) for Evans.
DEFENCE OF SAM
Time to bid farewell to Sam and the pertinent question is will he return again on July 28?
Let’s start from that date, the day of the All-Ireland final at Croke Park. It is still difficult to comprehend no Munster final at Fitzgerald Stadium or Páirc Uí Chaoimh in the baking July sun. It is as it is.
The days of Kerry just having four games to win the All-Ireland are no more. By my
reckoning Kerry will have eight games before they can recapture Sam. The provincial championships will continue and then the division will come for the Sam Maguire and the Tailteann Cup. How will it work out?
Teams will compete in their respective provincial championships as normal. Winners at each stage will progress and face victors from the other side of the draw, and the existing silverware will be up for grabs.
While defeat in previous years meant entry into the back door system of the qualifiers, the incorporation of league standings means losing in provincial action in 2023 may result in a team automatically dropping down to the second tier Tailteann Cup competition.
However, for the country's stronger sides who have already secured a high finish in the league, a loss in their province will not knock them out for Sam.
Kerry will beat Tipperary tomorrow in the Fitzgerald Stadium. Anything else is unthinkable. Throw in is at 4pm. There will be no Cork v Kerry traditional Munster final day as we knew it for decades. The likelihood is a Clare v Kerry Munster final, probably in Limerick.
Elsewhere, Dublin will win in Leinster. Colm O’Rourke has had little success with Meath so the opposition to Dublin may come from Louth.
Connacht will become much like Ulster. I still fancy Galway despite great claims by Roscommon, and do not forget Sligo where Pat Spillane Jr is excelling. Incidentally, a fine player with Sligo many years ago was a son of Legion’s Pádraig O’Meara from High Street (Moss Keane’s sidekick).
Ulster? Stick a pin in it. Tyrone were startled to lose to Monaghan by a last-minute goal last Sunday. The Red Hand won’t take that lying down. Armagh, Derry and Monaghan will fight it out. Maybe down to two at the end: Derry and Armagh.

LOI FIRST DIVISION
Kerry FC v Galway United Tonight
at 7.45pm
Mounthawk Park
A formidable task awaits league newcomers Kerry FC on Friday night as they welcome top-of-thetable Galway United to Tralee.
Galway have been on a rampage since
STRIKER: Killarney man Ryan Kelliher in action for Kerry against Waterford last weekend. Photo: Adam
the start of the season, winning all nine of their games while scoring 29 goals and conceding just three in the process. Their biggest victory so far came against Kerry in the reverse fixture when John Caulfield’s side racked up a record-breaking nine goals, with the men from the Kingdom only managing one in reply.
Kerry will need to keep a close eye on Ed McCarthy; the former Treaty player bagged a first-half hat-trick in that 9-1 drubbing.
Cronin set for televised title fight
Kerry boxer Kevin Cronin is fighting for the Irish light heavyweight title in Galway tonight and the good news for local boxing fans is that the bout will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
The Milltown native came mightily close to toppling the champ, Jamie Morrissey,
when they met in Belfast in February and he will be hoping to set the record straight in tonight’s rematch. Cronin v Morrissey: Part 2 forms part of an exciting-looking card at Leisure Land that also features local welterweight Kieran Molloy versus Columbian opponent Fernando Mosquera.
Billy Dennehy’s charges are still looking for that elusive first win but they can take heart from last weekend’s narrow 1-0 defeat to second place Waterford. The visitors showed resilience at the Waterford Regional Sports Centre as their hosts created a string of first-half chances, but they were eventually undone by a Ronan Coughlan goal in the 70th minute.
This result means that the Tralee-based club drew one and lost eight of their first round of fixtures. They will be hoping for
a better return from the second round, which gets underway tonight against Galway. Despite the scoreline in the previous encounter, the match is expected to be a sell-out or very close to one.
Kerry’s average attendance in the first round was 1,194 - the fifth highest average in the division after Waterford (2,238), Galway (2,064), Finn Harps (1,575) and Cobh Ramblers (1,394). The official capacity at Mounthawk Park is 1,200.

Killarney Athletic
RESULT: Henneberry Sports Reserve Cup - Tralee Dynamos 1-1 Killarney Athletic AET. Dynamos won 4-3 on penalties. On a Friday lovely evening in Mounthawk Park Tralee our senior Bs we’re up against a strong Tralee Dynamos B team who currently sit top of division 1b. In the absence of a brick wall of a goalie, Conor O’Riordan, Cillian Hickey was in between the stick but had relatively little to do beside a few routine catches in the first half thanks to solid defending from James Suter, Frank Cronin, Conor Healy and David Naughton. There was an even share of possession through the first half with neither side able to find an opening which brought us to half time at 0-0. The action really kicked in during the second half when Dynamos scored from a cross to the back post. Things continued to go against us when our left back James Suter received a straight red for a challenge that should have barely warranted a yellow. Nevertheless, the blues fought back when Frank Cronin bundled the ball in from a corner later in the half and a cup upset seemed possible. With only a few minutes to go the comeback was completed, when Darren O’Doherty rounded the goalkeeper and from a tight angle found the bottom right corner in the side netting. However due to a gaping hole in the side netting the referee somehow believed the ball to have gone wide and awarded a goal kick, meaning the score remained 1-1 at full time. Extra time came and went with monstrous efforts from all the blues especially the midfield of Cillian O’Regan, Eoghan Lawlor, Darren O’Doherty who slipped into the vacant left back position. Elsewhere on the night Conor Collins, Aaron O’Sullivan and his brother Dylan who came from the bench, Gavin Moriarty, Armand Gashi, Jesus Villarrubia and Oisin O’Sullivan all played vital roles in a great battle. Despite a Cillian Hickey save in the penalty shootout it wasn’t to be our night as the Dynamos keeper made two good saves but great respect to all the boys who stood up to be counted to take a penalty.

LADIES FOOTBALL UPDATE: The U14 girls were back in action in Co League Div 4. Ballymacelligot were the visitors on a sunny Sunday afternoon in Direen. The hosts played with the aid of a stiff breeze in the first half and established an early lead that they would hold until the half-time break. The visitors battled gamely throughout the second period, but as the saying goes, "goals wins games," and the home side extended the gap and eventually took the spoils on the day. Well done to all the girls playing today in the spring sunshine. They are at home again next Sunday where they will face Na Gaeil. Thanks to Ballymac for a sporting game. The U16s entertain Beaufort on Thursday in the next instalment of the County League. Throw in is at 6.30pm. U13 BOYS: The U13s made the trip to Glenbeigh on Monday night to play Glenbeigh-Glencar-Cromane in Division 4 of the county league. In very windy conditions GGC started the game very brightly with an early goal. They continued to take advantage of the conditions and raced into a 2-1 lead. The second half saw an improvement from the Fossa boys where they notched up a further 6 points, 4 from the boot of the hard-working Luke Rennie, and one a piece from Eoin Bennet and Ross O’Gorman. Unfortunately, GGC added another 2-5 in that second half to leave the final score 5-9 to 0-8. It was the first defeat in the league for the boys against a very good GGC team. In a backs to the wall display, Oisin Cryan put in a man of the match performance in full back for the Fossa boys while Marc Sheehan was also outstanding on the night. Donncha Vaughan, Ross O’Gorman and Kevin Breen were constantly running and making themselves available. It was a tough day for the boys but they fought bravely throughout.
