Kilcummin road works on target
Works on the Kilcummin Sewerage Scheme remain on track despite “unforeseen complications" associated with deep excavations and ground conditions.
| By Sean MoriartyUisce Éireann has confirmed to the Killarney Advertiser that the project will be completed by early 2024 as planned. A spokesperson said the “short-term inconvenience will be overshadowed by the long-term benefits that the new pipeline will deliver” and, “when complete will accommodate future population growth, improve water quality in the River Deenagh and Lough Leane, and protect the environment and recreational waters”.
The road-closure at Coolcorcoran was lifted earlier this week and will be replaced by a manual stop-and-go system to complete that portion of the works.
“In March, we communicated that a three-week extension to the original road closure on Coolcorcoran Road was required, due to unforeseen complications associated with deep excavations and ground conditions,” an Uisce Éireann
spokesperson told the Killarney Advertiser.
“Works on this section progressed slower than originally planned and for this unplanned inconvenience we apologise. To expediate delivery, additional resources were deployed on site to ensure the overall delivery timeframe remained on track. This section was delayed after the contractor was forced to excavate deeper than originally planned – up to six metres in some sections - to allow for a gravity flow in the system.
“A gravity sewer network will run along the majority of the Kilcummin Road. For the sewage to successfully flow by gravity, without the need to consistently pump wastewater forward, the pipe needs to be installed at a gradient along its length. To achieve this, the pipe must be laid at specific depths along the entire pipeline route,” added the spokesperson.
“Due to the undulating land in this area,
FOR ALL THE LATEST UP TO DATE
the detailed design required circa 25% of the full pipeline on the road to be constructed at depths greater than two metres with certain sections requiring six metre depths.”
CONNECTIONS
Some local councillors called for connections to be made to households who wish to join the scheme now or at a later date to be included in this construction phase.
“The scope of the Kilcummin Sewerage Scheme includes installation of a sewer network and construction of a pumping station. This does not include the provision of connection points or new wastewater connections to properties in the area along the route of the wastewater
network. Uisce Éireann, as a utility regulated by the Commission for the Regulation of Utilities, is unable to offer free connections as per the approved Connections Charging Policy. Regarding making connection applications, as has been communicated since the commencement of project delivery, anyone who has paid for a connection will be connected to the scheme at the standard rate as part of the delivery of the pipeline project, regardless of the depth of the pipe.” Additionally, an excavation has resulted in making a nearby wall unstable but Uisce Éireann have taken steps to safeguard the general public in this section of the works.
Rathmore mourns passing of David Saunders
The death of Rathmore man David Saunders on Monday was felt across the locality and further afield.
His life story is one of bravery and adversity, one he faced with dignity and courage.
After surviving cancer twice in childhood, he sadly succumbed to his third bout earlier this week.
David lost a leg to the disease in childhood but he never allowed it get him down.
David (40), was born in Bealnadeega, an idyllic location between Rathmore and Barraduff. He attended Meentogues National School and later Pobal Scoil Sliabh Luachra in Rathmore.
“The school community is deeply saddened by the passing of past pupil David Saunders who was the special guest and inspirational speaker at our School Awards in 2016,” school principal Denis Kerins said.
Despite his disability, David climbed The Paps, cycled the byroads and upon leaving school he qualified as a teacher. He also became a prolific member of the Irish Amputee Football Team.
In November 2014 he was a key member of the Irish team that participated in the
Amputee Soccer World Cup in Mexico.
“Everyone in Amputee Football will be devastated to hear the sad news that one of our warriors has sadly passed away. David Saunders was a truly inspirational player, and a gentleman to anyone who was graced to meet him,” said
an Irish Amputee Football Association statement.
David also played for Cork City FC. He was married to Anne-Marie who is from Castleisland and they have two children, Jack (4) and Aoibhín (2).
A proud Kerry man, he set up home in Carrigaline in Cork where he was a much loved teacher in Douglas Rochestown Educate Together National School. He lived cancer free for 26 years and in that time became a motivational speaker. However, the illness returned and a GoFundMe page raised €171,752 to support him and his family. “This time around my prognosis is a lot bleaker," he said less than a month ago.
David passed away peacefully in the presence of his loving family. He is survived by his wife Anne-Marie and children, parents John and Anne, his three siblings Emer, Michelle and Sinead, and extended family and friends.
Requiem Mass will take place today (Friday) at St Joseph’s Church Rathmore followed by private cremation afterwards.

WEEKEND
Road closures for this weekend's Rally of the Lakes
There will be several road closures in the Killarney area to facilitate this weekend's running of the Rally of the Lakes.
The 42nd rally will bring a much needed early season boost to the locality. With close to 200 competitors, from as far afield as Australia set to take part in the event, the town will busy all weekend.
The Lewis Road car park is already closed to the public since last night (Thursday) to allow overnight parking for the 200 rally cars taking part in the event. This car park will remain out of bounds until late on Sunday evening.
The ceremonial start takes place on Main Street tonight (Friday). As a result
there will be traffic disruptions in the town centre from 6pm until 9pm. The ceremonial start is a family friendly event and presents an ideal opportunity to meet the star drivers ahead of their two days of competition.
The ramp celebration is being organised by Mike Moriarty. He has arranged extra entertainment including music and dancing to set the tone for tonight's event.
“People can expect plenty of surprises and some of our local drivers will be celebrated too,” he said.
The rally itself takes place tomorrow (Saturday) and Sunday.
The Molls’ Gap road will close from 7am to 11.15am tomorrow morning. However, the rally moves into the Beara Peninsula and the Castletownbear area for the remainder of the day and the rally will not affect local traffic.
Black Valley mobile phone service "not fit for purpose"
| By Sean MoriartyPoor mobile phone coverage in the Black Valley area is putting lives at risk and hindering mountain rescue operations a Kerry County Council meeting has been told.
Killarney Municipal District councillor John O’Donoghue wants the Council to write to the Minister for Environment, Climate and Communications Eamon Ryan to seek an upgrade to phone services in the area.
“This is particularly important in the Black Valley due to the incidence of people requiring the emergency services to rescue them on the nearby mountains,” he said at the meeting.
“The Black Valley was one of the last, if not the last place, on mainland Ireland to be electrified in 1976. That brought light to contradict its name, as well as a phone service, but unfortunately only a partial
one. To think that in an area of such majestic natural beauty is without a proper phone service in unthinkable, when one considers an average of two fatalities per year unfortunately have been reported on the nearby MacGillycuddy’s Reeks each year since 2000,” he said.
“To have locals telling tales of having to drive further out of the Valley to make urgent phone calls is simply unacceptable in this day and age. Our emergency services do a wonderful and often thankless job in such areas, and I believe that situations such as this are creating unnecessary obstacles in their path," he added.
“I am aware that there are other areas in the county in a similar situation, and I would like us, as a Council, to contact the Minister and ask him to intervene immediately, even if it means subsidising a company to run a phone service into such areas, as the current service is not fit for purpose.”
Sunday’s action includes repeats of Moll’s Gap and visits to Ballaghbeama. Moll’s Gap will close from 6.30am until 1.15pm while Ballaghbeama will be out of bounds from 7.30 to 2pm.
The Sunday pitstop for the rally is at the Liebherr Container Crane Factory in Fossa so approach roads to and from the village will be busy all day and motorists are advised to plan their journeys accordingly.
The afternoon action switches to East
Kerry with Rathmore, Barraduff and Gneeveguilla all set to be much busier than usual.
The Gortnagane road will close from 12.15pm to 6.05pm while the Knockrower East area will be closed from 12.45pm to 6.45pm.
Full details of the route and additional information are available in the official programme which is on sale in a host of outlets locally.
Fourth arrest in Rath murder case
A fourth person has been charged with the murder of Killarney man Thomas Dooley at Rath Cemetery in Tralee.
Gardai are continuing their investigation into the October 5 incident.
On Wednesday of this week Gardai arrested a male juvenile in his late teens. He was charged and appeared before Tralee District Court the same day.
“Investigations are ongoing,” said a Garda statement.
This brings the total arrested to four
people.
They are Thomas Dooley from Cork City who's the cousin of the dead man, a 20-year-old man, also named Thomas Dooley and also of Cork City and the dead man's brother 35-year-old Patrick Dooley of Arbutus Grove, Killarney. The fourth person cannot be named due to his age.
They have all been charged with the murder of Thomas Dooley and assaulting his wife Siobhán Dooley. A book of evidence is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Boxers target international fights after Irish success
| By Sean MoriartyKillarney boxer Jamesie Casey is targeting a place on the Irish team and international competitions after winning the All-Ireland ‘Boys 4’ title.
The 14-year-old from Hazlewood Drive eliminated rival Martin Sweeney of the Galway-based Olympic Boxing Club 60 seconds into the opening round in the National Stadium in Dublin on Friday night. His next major competition is the Irish Cadet Championships at the same venue in July but already the prodigious boxer is eyeing bigger competitions in Europe.
Dr Crokes selected for new national GAA partnership
Dr Crokes is one of four GAA clubs nationally to be selected for a new project to help older people.
| By Michelle CreanThe GAA and ALONE, the national charity that helps older people to age at home, are rolling out the pilot programme in four rural and four urban clubs nationwide.
The Kerry event was launched in Dr Crokes Clubhouse on Monday evening where members of the public got an opportunity to chat and discuss issues with three members of ALONE including Stefan the technician, who demonstrated the many uses of Alexa particularly for those aged 60+.
“Dr Crokes are delighted and proud to support the ALONE project in the Killarney area," Matt O’Neill, Chairman of Dr Crokes, told the Killarney Advertiser. "It is a perfect fit for a community-based organisation like the GAA. Dr Crokes’ Healthy Club initiative has looked to provide healthy and inclusive projects both for members and the broader Killarney and environs’ community, including breast cancer, prostate cancer, gambling addiction and our regular Tuesday ‘Gentle Fitness' programme for the 60 plus age group. We are excited with the
GAA opportunity to broaden our scope to include the ALONE project, which is a superb initiative that assists our more senior neighbours and friends to live an independent life in their own homes."
ALONE CEO, Seán Moynihan added that they are "delighted to be partnering with Dr Crokes GAA Killarney" to expand their network of supports into Killarney and Kerry.
"We know the pivotal role that GAA clubs play in their local community not just from a sporting point of view but from a cultural, social and economic perspective as well. Ireland’s over-65 population is going to hit one million in the next 10 years and it is vital that community organisations like Dr Crokes GAA are at the centre of how we support this increasing population. Our aim is to support the older person to age at home as independently and comfortably as possible.”
ALONE has an arrangement with a company which provides a range of supporting aids for older people and these can be purchased at discounted prices though the organisation.
“He has won county, provincial and All-Ireland, he cannot go any further in this country,” his father James told the Killarney Advertiser.
“In his next fight in the Cadets, he will be fighting against the age group above him.”
Fellow local boxers Leah Sheehan and Alana O’Brien won the ‘Girls 4’ 66kg class final and the ‘Girls 4’ 49kg final on Friday too.
It was O’Brien’s fourth Irish title in a row. She won Friday night’s fight on an unanimous 5-0 decision.
She has never lost a fight in Ireland and next up for the Kildare-based Killarney boxer is The Hull Box Cup in England.

Kevin ready to release debut album
| By Michelle CreanA Killarney musician is ready to release his debut album next week. Kevin Donnelly, one half of the Irish/ French duo 'The Village Vandals' wrote, produced, recorded and performs on the eleven track album 'Vandalism' set to be released on May 3.
"I myself being a Killarney native, naturally the album reflects many aspects of Killarney life," Kevin told the Killarney Advertiser.
"The Village Vandals - 'Vandalism' title is a commentary on the feeling of not fitting in to the world you live in and the music embodies that sentiment. We hope to achieve bringing something brand new to plate an unrecognisable taste to the pallet, to some a fresh new flavour, to others a bad taste left in their mouth but then again isn't that the very essence of a 'Vandal' and it is the very
message we are trying to push. Hate it or love it, it's new and unphased by normality or the standard.
"Killarney has been a major catalyst in making me who I am today and there are many themes throughout the album that convey exactly what it's like growing up in the town of Killarney be it good or be it bad. I feel like there are so many sides to life in Killarney that have not yet been portrayed or displayed and this album paints a picture for the people who might not know what life for a young person is like growing up in Killarney or for those who do and can relate to the coming of age stories within the songs." The album, he said, will also be pressed into physical form such as CDs and Vinyl. "All possible because of the help of our very kind fans we were able to raise the money in a pre-order style fundraiser with our Kickstarter we did earlier this year."
and Kaitlin Cronin will be dancing the sixhand reel in the Rince Foirne," secretary with the Rathmore LGFA, Carina O'Mahony said.
"We would like to thank Eilish Coakley for making the skirts for the dancers and we are grateful to Aine Murphy School of Dancing for teaching the girls the dances and to Siobhan McAuliffe for giving of her time to practice with the girls." There will be medals for both winners and runners up; also the Siobhain Cotter Memorial Shield which was introduced in 2008 by the Coiste Scór Chairraí will be on display and presented to the overall club at the end of the competition.
Eabhla Murphy, Danielle Buckley, Roisin McAuliffe, Grace O'Sullivan, Laura Cronin and Kaitlin Cronin will be dancing the six-hand reel in the Rince Foirne. Cathal Cronin is a member of the quiz team. Aoibhinn Creedon will be taking part in the recitation. Annual anglers event raises €15k for charities
Sunday's annual anglers event was a huge success as it raised €15,000 for two Kerry charities.
Organised by Lough Lein Anglers’ Association, one of the longest established fishing clubs in Ireland, the 35th annual fly fishing competition known as 'The Charity' attracted anglers from all over. Stephen Hanley (Macroom) and John O'Connell (Mallow) were presented 'Top Boat' and winners by Timo O'Sullivan, organiser of the event.
The charity day was spearheaded by Timo, and to date the anglers have raised in excess of €275,000 for deserving charities in Kerry and Cork. The main sponsor of the event is Lee Strand Co-op, Tralee.
Down Syndrome Kerry and Kerry Branch of The Irish Kidney Association will be the deserving beneficiaries.

New England Irish Harp Orchestra’s Killarney concert
The New England Irish Harp Orchestra will play in concert at St Mary’s Church on May 6.
This is the second time the orchestra will play at the venue. In 2014 it attracted one of the biggest audiences ever at the town centre church.
Based near Boston in the United States, the orchestra has been performing for over 19 years under the direction of Regina Delaney.
Delaney trained in Ireland and is no stranger to these shores, having very
strong connections with ‘The Gathering Festival’ in Killarney in 2013 and others.
“The Orchestra performs throughout New England traditional and contemporary Irish and American music. Working with many Irish harps, fiddles, and bodhráns, the orchestra weaves tunes and songs for a magical performance and a celebration of the Irish Harp,” said local organiser Tim O’Shea.
Next Saturday’s concert takes place at 8pm and will be followed by another performance at the St John’s Church of Ireland in Tralee on Sunday.

From beautiful fabric for custom made to stunning ready-made designs, to the functionality of blackout curtains; understanding how window furnishings can transform your space is a real art. Are you looking to revamp your living space? One of the best ways to instantly transform your home is to change your
curtains. If you’ve had curtains that have been hanging for a decade, now is the time to replace your window treatment. Often neglected, window treatment is just as important as any other element of your decor. We look at how a change in curtains can completely revitalise a room.
Curtains do much more than simply block out light; they can transform the style, mood and function of any interior space.
CURTAINS The magic of
THEY CAN MAKE A ROOM LOOK BIGGER
Making a room feel more spacious without actually adding any extra square meterage can sound a little like magician’s hogwash. But it’s actually quite easy to do: simply extend the curtains beyond the window frame on the wall. This works particularly well if you have large windows (but will work with any size window) as the illusion of large windows gives the impression of a large room.
the roof of a room? Not literally, of course. But while most people tend to put them just above the window, highhung drapes can actually bring the eye upward. Making them floor length elongates your window helping with the illusion of height.
THEY CAN KEEP OUT THE COLD
of colour to an otherwise neutral room. A subtle print can go a long way toward bringing interest to a monochromatic space. If you don’t want to commit to painting your neutral walls, colourful curtains may be just the ticket for adding warmth and interest.
THEY CAN CHANGE THE MOOD OF A ROOM

CAN CHANGE THE MOOD OF A ROOM
The style of curtains, and indeed any decor, directly impact on the mood and ambience of a room. Rich and ornate fabrics will contribute to a sense of formality within a room, while thin or neutral curtains will add to a more casual feeling.
HANGING CURTAINS CAN MAKE A ROOM LOOK TALLER
Did you know that curtains can raise
Not all curtain fabrics are suitable for preventing cold air from entering your interior spaces. For example, lightweight materials, such as linen, lace and sheer cotton, are loosely woven and allow chilly air to penetrate your rooms. Choose thick curtains in heavyweight, tightly woven textiles -- velvet, tapestry, tweed, denim, suede -- to provide a dense barrier against cloud, heavy or blackout linings also add to this helping reduce heating bills by keeping all the heat from escaping through windows.
THEY CAN INTRODUCE COLOUR INTO THE MIX
Curtains are an ideal way to add a pop
Last but not least, curtains are one of the simplest ways to completely change the ambience of a room. Depending on the look you are going for, curtains can dictate how informal or formal your room looks. Rich fabrics, swags, and lace can add a level of regality to a room, whilst thin and neutral fabrics lend a much more casual look. Once you have decided on the mood and ambience you are going for, you will be able to pick your curtains accordingly.
Curtains are one of the easiest ways to transform any space in your home.
PAINT LIKE A PRO: How to Paint uPVC Windows & Doors
| By Tony Griffin Manager, Pat McDonnell PaintsPainting your windows can be a relatively cost-effective way of freshening up your home! Check out our guide below to learn how to give PVC, uPVC or Aluclad Windows & Doors a new look!
STEP
1: PREPARATION
As with all painting projects, preparation is key. Lack of preparation is the most common reason why painting projects don’t succeed.
Start by removing dirt and dust with a dry cloth – paint will not adhere properly on unclean surfaces. This is even more important when working with a smooth surface that you will not be sanding before priming.
Fully clean and degrease the surface that you wish to paint. Fluxaf Pro Clean is a concentrated cleaner and can be diluted for this purpose. Don’t forget those hard-to-reach corners to avoid peeling further down the line. Wipe the dust off with a new clean, damp cloth and allow dry completely. Before you begin painting, cover the ground with dust sheets. Tape both sides of the door/window frame. For straight lines and zero residue, we recommend Deltec Gold 36mm Masking
Tape
STEP 2: PRIME
A brush will give you better application on window frames. Van Dam Brushes have a pointed head, making them ideal
for reaching tight corners. However, any good-quality brush should do the trick. Try not to overload the brush with paint as this can lead to unwanted drips. Keep a damp cloth on-hand to wipe drips away.
Apply one coat of primer to ensure the paint better adheres to your windows. We like Ralston Aqua All-Primer because it offers great adhesion and can be tinted to your preferred colour. The finish is great, but don’t be tempted to skip the topcoat as this is what gives your windows their durability and UV protection. Remember to always stir paint for a minute or so before use.
A common error is to apply a topcoat or second coat before the previous coat has had a chance to fully dry. Primers in particular become ‘touch-dry’ quite quickly, but this does not mean they are ready to be overcoated. Always read the manufacturer’s instructions with respect to drying times.
Tip: We always recommend a very light sand between coats with a fine grade sandpaper. Removal of all dust before applying the next coat is critical.
TOOLS FOR THE JOB
• Deltec Gold 36mm Masking Tape
• Microfibre cloth
• Fluxaf Pro Clean
• Fine Grade Sandpaper (320)
• Ralston Aqua All-Primer tinted to the colour of your choice
STEP 2: PAINT
Follow up with two coats of a Ralston Aqua topcoat. Depending on how much shine you want for your PVC / uPVC, you can choose between a range of finishes including Matt, Semi-Matt (i.e. eggshell), Satin or Gloss.
• Ralston Aqua Semi-Mat / Satin / High Gloss tinted to the colour of your choice
• Van Dam Brush
• Dust Sheets
Tip: Open the windows for a couple of hours each day so the paint on the PVC / uPVC windows can dry and cure properly. It can take several days for the paint to cure, so be gentle in the meantime.

Weather Conditions: As we know, Irish weather can be somewhat temperamental, even during the summer months, so make sure to consider this when purchasing your garden furniture. Remember that the furniture you
buy will have to withstand exposure to the elements as well as general wear and tear, so take your time and choose wisely.
Versatile Furniture: Choose furniture that can be easily moved and repositioned. This allows you to make changes to your garden furniture when the seasons change or when you want to switch up the look.
Size of your space: You can have great
fun getting inventive and putting your own personal stamp on your outdoor space, but keep in mind that the size of the space available to you will determine the type of outdoor furniture you purchase.
Showcase your style: Don’t be afraid to tap into your creativity and style when it comes to choosing the perfect outdoor garden furniture to suit your needs. Similar to your indoor furniture, good quality outdoor furniture pieces will last for many years, so it is a good idea to choose something that you love and something that reflects your unique taste.

When it comes to furnishing your living room, the sofa is likely to be the centrepiece of the space. A comfortable and stylish sofa can be the perfect addition to any home, but with so many options available, it can be overwhelming to choose the right one. Here are some tips and considerations to help you choose the perfect sofa for your living room.
1. SIZE AND SPACE
The first consideration when choosing a sofa is the size and space of your living room. You'll want to measure the dimensions of the room and determine how much space you have available for the sofa. Consider the placement of other furniture pieces, as well as any doorways or windows that may affect the size and placement of the sofa. You'll also want to consider the number of people who will be using the sofa regularly, as well as any pets or children in the household.
2. STYLE AND DESIGN
The style and design of the sofa is another important consideration. There are many different styles to choose from, including traditional, modern, contemporary, and transitional. You'll want to choose a style that compliments the overall design of your living room and reflects your personal taste. Consider the colour and texture of the fabric, as well as the shape and style of the arms, legs, and backrest. Recliners, corner sofas and accent chairs are all further considerations.
TIPS AND CONSIDERATIONS PERFECT SOFA Choosing the

3. COMFORT AND SUPPORT
Of course, one of the most important factors in choosing a sofa is comfort and support. You'll want to choose a sofa that provides adequate support for your back and neck, as well as comfortable cushioning for your seat and arms. Consider the type of foam or padding used in the sofa, as well as the firmness of the cushions. If you have any back or neck issues, you may want
to consider a sofa with built-in lumbar support.
4. DURABILITY AND MAINTENANCE
Finally, you'll want to consider the durability and maintenance of the sofa. Look for a sofa made from high-quality materials that can withstand regular use and wear and tear. Consider the type of fabric or leather used, as well as the quality of the stitching and construction. You'll also want to consider the ease of cleaning and
maintenance, especially if you have pets or children in the household. In conclusion, choosing the perfect sofa for your living room requires careful consideration of size and space, style and design, comfort and support, and durability and maintenance. By taking the time to research and consider these factors, you can find a sofa that not only looks great but also provides comfort and functionality for years to come.

INSPIRED BY DANNY CASEYFree school books for Kerry primary schools
Minister Foley announces payment of over €1.5 million in funding for free school books for Kerry primary schools.
Minister for Education and Kerry TD Norma Foley has announced payment of €1,557,504 to provide primary school children in Kerry with free school books.
The scheme will provide free schoolbooks, workbooks and copybooks for all pupils in primary and special schools. Thereafter the grant should be used to eliminate costs of related classroom resources such as pens, pencils, erasers, sharpeners, colouring pencils and
whiteboard markers.
As part of Budget 2023, Minister Foley secured over €50 million in a landmark decision to provide free schoolbooks to primary school pupils within the free education scheme from September 2023.
This free schoolbooks measure will eliminate the cost to families for all schoolbooks, workbooks and copybooks at primary school, including special schools.
The free primary school books scheme will benefit more than 558,000 pupils in approximately 3,230 recognised primary schools, including over 130 special schools.
“Schools in Kerry will receive over €1.5 million to provide free schoolbooks in all primary schools and special schools," Minister Foley said. "This ground-breaking, permanent measure will ease some of the financial burden facing families with the backto-school costs. The scheme will provide, at a minimum, free schoolbooks, workbooks and copybooks for all pupils enrolled in primary and special schools in the 2023/24 school year. By providing our primary school children with free school books, we are enhancing their educational experience, not just in the classroom but reaching out into the family home.”
Disney show turns into a flaming disaster!
Onlookers who had been looking forward to a nighttime Disneyland show were left shocked when it burst into flames on Saturday night.
A 45ft prop became engulfed in flames at the 'Fantasmic!' show, a 29-minute nighttime show featuring characters from several popular Disney movies, in California's Disneyland.
A large animatronic dragon was clearly destroyed in the huge flames on Tom Sawyer Island as can be seen on videos on social media taken by onlookers. The audience members were informed that the show, which promises "superb pyrotechnics", could not continue due to "unforeseen circumstances".
Personnel from the Anaheim Fire and Rescue were dispatched at around 11pm to help the Disneyland Fire Department get the fire under control.
Trump set for Ireland visit
It is understood he will fly into Shannon Airport on May 3 before visiting his Trump International Hotel and Golf Links on the outskirts of Doonbeg. He has owned the County Clare resort since 2014.
His visit comes just weeks after his successor Joe Biden took part in a four-day visit to the island of Ireland. The last time the former US president visited Ireland was in 2019 while he was still in office.
There is expected to be a sizeable security operation in the area during the visit.
"All cast members were safely evacuated from Tom Sawyer Island," a Disneyland official said. "Due to smoke and wind, attractions near the island were safely evacuated of any guests, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation at this time."
No injuries were reported, a spokesperson for the Anaheim Fire Department said.
Disneyland cast members were treated for potential smoke inhalation.
Arson investigators have since investigated the cause of the fire, which hasn't been determined.
Former US president Donald Trump is to visit Ireland next week. The life and legacy of Vicky Phelan celebrated at poignant event
The life and legacy of the late Vicky Phelan was celebrated in poignant style in Tralee at the weekend as local cancer support charity, Recovery Haven Kerry, hosted the Kerry stage of the nationwide Vicky Phelan Campaign and Portrait Tour.
The Tralee-based charity joined forces with portrait owner David Brennan and friends and family of the late cervical cancer campaigner for the two-day awareness raising initiative, which was kindly hosted by MTU Kerry and supported by Tralee Chamber Alliance.
The Sólás Centre at MTU’s North Campus was the location for the weekend’s activities, which began on Friday night with an emotional, but hugely inspirational unveiling of the portrait by owner and lifelong friend of Vicky, David Brennan. In front of an audience of over 100 invited guests, including some of Vicky’s friends and parents John and Gaby, David gave an empowering insight into every aspect of the stunning portrait, beautifully detailing the symbolism of each section. Another of Vicky’s friends, John Wall, was also there to speak about who he called ‘Vicky the person’ and, like David, offered a wonderful insight into exactly the kind of woman Vicky Phelan was, away from her media persona.
Deirdre Walsh of Radio Kerry was also on hand to moderate a fascinating panel
discussion with prominent cancer awareness advocates, including 221+ campaigners Lyn Fenton and Caoimhe O’Neill Forde, as well as inspiring 18-year-old Roísín Ní Chadhla – BT Young Scientist and Student Public Health Researcher. Recovery Haven Kerry Chairperson Tim McSwiney and Dr Brendan O’Donnell, MTU Registrar, both spoke eloquently on behalf of their organisations, in welcoming the tour to Kerry.
As part of the weekend’s programme, the stunning portrait was also on public display at the Sólás Centre on Saturday morning, where, once again, David Brennan, explained its origins and meaning behind it. The previous night’s speakers and Vicky’s parents were once again present for Saturday morning’s event, which was attended by over 60 people.
“Given the nature of our work in supporting those with cancer and their families, we are honoured to have been part of this special and very moving event which celebrates the legacy of a remarkable woman and continues her work of raising awareness and the importance of self-advocacy,” said Recovery Haven Kerry manager, Gemma Fort.
“We are extremely grateful for the co-operation of MTU Kerry, particularly the Department of Nursing and Healthcare Studies under the leadership of Dr Gerardina Harnett, and the support of Tralee Chamber Alliance and many other local businesspeople and community groups.”
South Munster Money Advice and Budgeting Service (MABS) have revealed a rise in visits and calls from people in the three weeks following the lifting of the eviction ban on March 31.
MABS, who provide impartial advice to anyone who wants help in managing their money and taking control of debt, have reported a significant increase in referrals from over 65s.
The temporary moratorium which prevented no fault evictions was introduced in 2022 to protect rental tenants during the current economic crisis. The phased lifting of the ban over a staggered period from April 1 to June 18, 2023 puts thousands of renters at risk of potential evictions.
MABS had already been working with a high volume of people seeking support due to rising costs and are now seeing people impacted by the lifting of the ban, and those worried about receiving potential eviction notices with further financial concern due to energy prices remaining high, despite wholesale prices coming down.
MABS want to reassure people that there are steps in place to support those affected, and that MABS, alongside other sup-
port facilities, are there to help those who are worried.
“We have recorded an increase in people with concerns following the lifting of the eviction ban, many who have immediately been affected, and those who are concerned about when an eviction notice comes," Eamon Foley, Service Delivery Manager for MABS Kerry, said.
"The Government has put measures into place to help, such as the “purchase with tenant in situ scheme to those eligible, but we do urge tenants facing challenges to contact us.
"We are here for free and in confidence, online or in-person appointments. For specific housing advice, we will refer you to the right place for support, whether that is Threshold, your Local Authority, or the Residential Tenancy Board.”
For more information about money management, mortgage arrears and tackling debt, contact MABS for free, confidential, and independent advice at any point along the way.

An Post is seeking new ideas for their 2025 stamps.
Significant anniversaries, and aspects of Irish history, culture, community, geography, outdoor living, environment, flora and fauna are just some of the topics that feature on Irish stamps. Work then begins on the commissioning and management of designs, ahead of specialised printing and distribution for sale at post offices and through anpost.com.
Irish postage stamps are renowned worldwide for the quality of their sub-
ject matter and design, always involving top Irish artists and designers. Perhaps there is an event, from the past or in the future, that is worth marking. Maybe there’s an special anniversary, a person or a particular aspect of Irish life that should be celebrated.
For inspiration, recent An Post stamps have included topics as varied as Favourite Irish breakfasts, Sean O’Casey’s Dublin Plays; Irish Country Music, and the 50th anniversary of Ireland joining the EU.

The late Johnny Hickey will be remembered by his motor club colleagues at his beloved Assess Ireland Rally of the Lakes this weekend.
The hugely popular Killarney and District Motor Club (KDMC) member passed away two years ago.
He was one of the hardest-working volunteers within the ranks of KDMC and his contribution to the Rally of the Lakes is sorely missed in the two rallies that have run since his passing.
The accomplished rally navigator will be forever remembered by his family and friends within the sport after his daughter Alyson unveiled a new trophy in his name at the official launch of the 2023 event on Saturday night.
The Johnny Hickey Memorial Trophy will be presented annually to the highest-placed co-driver in a two-wheel drive car in the modified class – a category close to his heart.
Alyson (13), bravely spoke in front of a packed audience at the launch event, about her late father and what motorsport meant to him.
“My dad loved rallying from a very young age and his passion only grew stronger as he got older. He joined my granddad, Charlie Hickey, in the co-driver’s position when he was 16-year-old,” Alyson told
those in attendance.
“For him, it was never just about the rally – it was about the people who shared his love for it. He believed that the spirit and friendship that comes with rallying was just as important as the thrill of the race."
Alyson was accompanied by her granddad, rally driver Charlie, his grandmother Joan and his aunt Charlene when she unveiled the cup in the Gleneagle Hotel on Saturday.
She received a standing ovation for her powerful and tearful speech that remembered her late dad and rally legend Johnny.
Three local competitors to watch in this weekend's Rally of the Lakes
Three local competitors will start the 2023 Assess Ireland Rally of the Lakes in state-of-the-art rally cars capable of winning the event.
Defending champion Callum Devine will start at number one and he will have Muckross co-driver Noel O’Sullivan in a Volkswagen Polo Rally2 alongside. They dramatically won the rally last year after chief rival Alistair Fisher crashed
out in the final stage.
Two more local Volkswagens will start the rally in the hands of Rob Duggan and Alan Ring.
“It is an honour to carry number one on the doors,” said O’Sullivan. “The club have put on an incredible route, and it is great to see the two boys out in Polos. There is a very strong entry, and we will do our best to get a good result.”
Duggan is the defending modified cate-
gory champion but has made a surprise step up to the top class.
“It has always been a dream since I was four or five-years-old to go up The Gap in a top machine,” he said.
“I have no idea what to expect, I have only done the rally in a modified car, so I guess this car won’t be as tail happy.”
He will be co-driven, as usual, by Ger Conway.
Duggan’s car will be run by Welsh out-
fit, Melvyn Evans Motorsport, the same team that will run Alan Ring who makes a welcome return to top-flight rallying after a few years contesting events in the historic category.
“The weekend should be good,” he said. “Myself and Rob will be teammates and it will be nice to have a proper car for the event.”
The rally gets underway with a ceremonial start in Killarney town centre on Friday evening before two action-packed days across 16 stages.
The Saturday run returns to the challenging Beara Peninsula while Sunday morning’s action takes place in South Kerry ahead of the grand finale on East Kerry roads on Sunday evening.
What is a Fire Safety Certificate?
A Fire Safety Certificate is an official document that verifies if a building design submitted as part of an application will, if constructed in accordance with the plans and specifications approved by the Building Control Authority, comply with the requirements of the Building Regulations.
Fire Safety Certificates are issued by a Building Control Authority. The certificate confirms that the building has adequate escape facilities and that the building is designed in a way that prevents and limits the spread of fire. While all buildings must comply with the fire regulations, not all buildings will need a Fire Safety Certificate.
Which developments require a Fire Safety Certificate?
The Building Control Act (1990 & 2007) specifies the development types that require Fire Safety Certificates:
• Works in connection with the design and construction of a new building
• Works in connection with the material alteration of a day centre, a building containing a flat, a hotel, hostel or guest building, an institutional building, a place of assembly, a shopping centre
• Works in connection with the material alteration of a shop, office or industrial building where additional floor area is being provided within the existing building or where the building is being sub-divided into a number of units for separate occupancy
• Works in connection with the exten-
sion of a building by more than 25 square metres
• A building as regards which a material change of use takes place. Some developments are exempted from requiring a Fire Certificate and can include:
• Certain single storey agricultural buildings
• A building used as a dwelling (other than a flat)
• A single storey domestic garage
• A single storey building ancillary to a dwelling which is used exclusively for recreational or storage purposes or the keeping of plants, birds or animals for domestic purposes and is not used for any trade or business or for human habitation
• Works in connection with a Garda sta-
tion, a courthouse, a barracks and certain government buildings. If a building is inspected by a member of the building control authority and it transpired that no Fire Safety Certificate is in place, the building could be subject to closure. Cost of agricultural land set to increase by 8% this year
The results of a survey on agricultural land values conducted by the Society of Chartered Surveyors Ireland (SCSI) was published earlier this week.
It predicts an increase in land values by an average of 8% this year and an increase of 14% on average in rental values.
The report titled, 'SCSI/Teagasc Agricultural Land Market Review & Outlook Report 2023', analyses the agri sector performance over the past year and projects how it will perform over the next 12 months.
In all 134 agri professionals and valuers were surveyed, who expect the outlook
for dairy farmers to ease and a challenging future for sheep and tillage farming.
Rental Land values in Munster increased by an average of 13% in the last year with a 9% increase experienced in Leinster.
The report indicates that the average non-residential farmland prices in 2022 ranged from €5,564 per acre for poor quality land – up five percent from €5,308 in 2021 – to €11,172 per acre for good quality land – up two percent from €10,962 the previous year. Strong demand from dairy farmers for good quality land is driving the market.
The majority of those surveyed believe there is likely to be an increase in demand from dairy farmers to purchase

farmland in 2023.
One point to note however, is that changes to the European Nitrates Directive, particularly measures aimed at protecting water quality, may have an impact on land prices, especially rental prices.
In order to maintain current levels of milk production – and to comply with the directive – many dairy farms will need to either increase their land area or reduce milk production.
The Residential Zoned Land Tax (RZLT) is also coming down the line at an alarming rate, farmers have until May 1 to make a written appeal. Under the new legislation farmers owning currently zoned land face an annual tax bill of 3% of the market value of their zoned land. This will result in countless numbers of landowners facing crippling tax bills from next year on. It is expected that this new tax may bring forward extra

Introducing children to the world of healthcare
Children got a chance to learn all about compassion as they brought their teddy bears to "hospital" on Saturday.
150 children visited the Teddy Bear Hospital at the Munster Technology University, North Campus in Tralee. The event was organised by students and staff from MTU and RCSI (Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland), along with charity partner BUMBLEance, the world’s first ambulance service specifically designed and tailored for children.
The aim of the event was to ease the stress and tension that a child feels when attending a hospital or when seeing a doctor, as well as finding out more about what doctors, nurses and healthcare specialists and professionals do as
part of their jobs. RCSI, MTU and Castel Education (Cambridge Education Group – CEG) deliver the International Medical/ Pharmacy Commencement Programme (IMCP/IPCP) at the North Campus in Tralee.
Using the cuddly teddy bears, MTU and RCSI medical, healthcare, and science students, and staff showed children what happens in a hospital, who works there and how the 'Teddy Doctor' helps the sick teddy to feel better and also explained the whole process of being in a hospital from start to finish using the teddy bears.

When great trees fall, Rocks on distant hills shudder, Lions hunker down in tall grasses And even elephants lumber after safety.
When great souls die and our reality, bound to them, takes leave of us. Our souls, dependent upon their nurture, now shrink, wizened.
Our minds, formed and informed by their radiance, fall away.
And when great souls die, After a period peace blossoms, Slowly and always irregularly. Spaces fill with a kind of soothing electric vibration.
Our senses, restored, never to be the same, whisper to us. They existed. They existed. We can be. Be and be better. For they existed!

Munster final to be staged at Gaelic Grounds despite Clare’s bid to play at home
The Munster Senior Football Championship final between Kerry and Clare will be played at Limerick’s Gaelic Grounds after Clare failed in their late bid to move the game to Ennis.
The last seven provincial finals between the teams dating back to 1936 have been held in Limerick. Prior to that, Clare-Kerry finals had taken place at a variety of locations including Cusack Park in Ennis, the Tipperary Sportsfield in Tipp Town, Markets Field in Limerick, and the Killarney Sportsfield (now Fitzgerald Stadium).
After Clare’s semi-final victory over Limerick on April 22, manager Colm Collins confirmed that he would like to see the final being held at Cusack Park. “We'd
be delighted to be play there,” he said. “Hopefully. We'll see.”
It is understood that Clare officials made contact with Kerry GAA and the Munster Council about the prospect of removing the neutral venue arrangement that exists between the counties and replacing it with a home and away arrangement.
A number of observers (including some within Kerry) noted that the match would likely be more competitive if it was staged in Ennis, and this might stand to the reigning All-Ireland champions in the long run. Kerry would be strong favourites to win their 10th Munster title in 11 years regardless of the venue, but their odds would naturally
be longer in an away match than at a neutral venue.
However, a short statement from Munster GAA on Tuesday night brought the speculation to an end.
“Following a meeting tonight (Tuesday) of the Munster GAA CCC, it was agreed that the TUS Gaelic Grounds Limerick will be the venue for the Munster Senior Football Championship Final between Clare and Kerry on Sunday, May 7 at 4pm.”
Kerry may have been reluctant to hand Clare home advantage on this occasion when there is no guarantee that the sides will meet in another final in the immediate future, or even in the medium-term. The last Kerry-Clare final was
23 years ago.
It would also be understandable if Kerry were not prepared to make a concession to a direct opponent in a third consecutive season. In 2021 they agreed to postpone the All-Ireland semi-final to give Tyrone more time to recover from their Covid outbreak, and in 2022 they agreed to play Cork in their alternative home venue Páirc Uí Rinn, even after the Munster Council deemed it unsuitable.
Clare will be seeking their first Munster Championship win against Kerry since 1992 when the sides meet next weekend. Since that famous upset 31 years ago, their record against The Kingdom reads: P12 L12.
| By Adam Moynihan Follow Adam on Twitter @AdamMoynihanMoving Munster to start of year could ‘probably’ work
Kerry captain David Clifford has indicated that he could get on board with a potential reshuffle that would see the Munster Championship being moved to the start of the season. Speaking to this writer at Croke Park for the launch of SuperValu’s sponsorship of the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship, Clifford acknowledged the historical value of the provincial competition while also suggesting that he would be open to change.
“You’re well aware of the importance of it (the Munster championship). Look, there’s a lot of history there and stuff like that. But should it be moved to a different time of the year? It’d probably be hard to have an issue with [that]. You’re still keeping the competition and then you’re still having those games, so I don’t think when it’s played in the year is as important really.”
Clifford and his teammates beat Division 4-bound Tipperary by 20 points in last Saturday’s Munster semi-final. In Leinster, Dublin defeated Laois by 26. One-sided mismatches like these have led to more and more calls for the provincial championships to lose their traditional standing as important pre-
cursors to the All-Ireland series. Radical plans to do exactly that, while also moving the National League closer to the All-Ireland series and effectively promoting it to championship status, failed to garner enough support at the last GAA Congress in 2021. Instead, the league was joined up to the All-Ireland series as a seeding mechanism only, with the four provincial championships retaining their pre-All-Ireland series billing.
Would the Footballer of the Year be in favour of going the whole way and giving the Munster Championship less relevance when it comes to the serious business of summertime football?
“Possibly, yeah. If it was something like: you played a Munster Championship and then maybe some sort of a league that had a bearing on championship… Yeah, I think that’s probably something that could work.”
Last weekend’s blowout win was frustrating at times for Kerry as they came
up against a packed defence that seemed content with keeping the score down. Encountering such set-ups is not uncommon in the modern game but Clifford, who was limited to just two points (both from frees), is philosophical about the challenge this presents. “That’s the reality now so there isn’t much point in us thinking back to football in the past where it was more open. I actually think it’s very enjoyable to try and find ways of breaking down defences and maybe seeing the different approaches you can take. At the end of the day, if we’re winning, that’s all that matters really. So I wouldn’t say it’s that
much less enjoyable.”
Despite only turning 24 in January, Clifford has already worked his way into the ‘greatest of all time’ discussion with a string of mesmeric performances including an unforgettable display in last year’s All-Ireland final, when he kicked eight points.
But the Fossa native, who is a PE teacher in St Brendan’s College, is keeping his feet on the ground.
“You try and brush it off as much as possible. There’s nothing really to be gained from getting involved in a conversation like that. People are going to say what they’re going to say. You can’t really control that. But I suppose I try not to let it have an effect [on me].”

Adam Moynihan reports from Fitzgerald Stadium, Killarney
Last weekend Kerry strolled to a comprehensive 20-point win over Tipperary in yet another procession that further calls into question the future of the provincial championships.
Delegates turned down the opportunity to radically alter the structure of the football championship at Congress in 2021, opting instead for a watered-down version of the ‘league plus championship’ format that retains the direct link between the provinces and the All-Ireland series. Some (this writer included) would like to see that link severed. If the Munster Championship does eventually get shifted to a less important time
of year, few who were in attendance at a gloomy Fitzgerald Stadium on Saturday last will shed a tear.
The visitors, who will be a Division 4 team in 2024, did their best to frustrate the All-Ireland champions by clogging up their defence and slowing the pace of the game but it was merely an exercise in damage limitation.
The hosts were patient and picked off their scores, with devil-may-care corner back Tom O’Sullivan and livewire forward Tony Brosnan particularly impressive in front of the posts.
Brosnan did miss a penalty in the first half (Kerry’s awful record from the spot wors-
ens) but he more than made amends by stroking over five points from play.
O’Sullivan added 0-3 including two trademark outside-of-the-boot points that brought smiles to Kerry faces.
Footballer of the Year David Clifford (0-2, both frees) was peripheral but – much like the match itself - it mattered little.
Kerry march on to the Munster final where a trickier tie against Clare awaits.

7-a-side soccer is back after three-year break
In news that will come as music to the ears of the local soccer community, Killarney Athletic have confirmed that the club’s popular 7-a-side competition is making a comeback for summer 2023.
The staging of the annual soccer tournament, which was founded in 1977, was interrupted during the pandemic but this week Athletic unveiled details of the latest instalment.
“We are delighted to be celebrating our 44th year of this event,” Killarney Athletic chairman Donie Murphy said. “After a three-year absence, we hope for an exciting comeback and that the event will be bigger and better than ever.”
The tournament is set to kick off at the club’s base in Woodlawn on Monday, June 19 with competitions being played off over the course of a few weeks. There will be categories for boys and girls from U10 to U16 as well as senior women, senior men, and over 35s. For the first time
ever, underage matches will be played on the club’s new artificial pitch.
“We are proud to be the main sponsor of this event, especially in light of its 44th year anniversary,” Mark Murphy, CEO of Killarney, Kenmare and Cahersiveen Credit Union, said. “We would like to wish the organisers and all participants the best of luck in this year’s tournament.”
There will be a range of accolades handed out as part of the event including the Premier and Reserve Cups, the Kieran Cahillane Senior Player of the Tournament Award, and the Johnny Heffernan Underage Player of the Tournament Award. There will also be free entry to the 2024 tournament for the Premier Cup winners. The closing date for all ages (to be returned to the Credit Union in Killarney) is Friday, June 2 before 5.30pm. The draw will take place on Tuesday, June 6 at Scotts Hotel.

Killarney win U16 West Munster Cup
The Killarney RFC U16 team had a fantastic win in the final of the West Munster Cup on Saturday last as they overcame Rugbai Chorca Dhuibhne at O’Dowd Park, Tralee.
HEARTBREAK: Kevin Cronin falls to the ground after discovering that his title fight had ended in a draw.
fight
Kerry fighter Kevin Cronin has once again been left dejected by a controversial judges’ decision after his rematch with Jamie Morrissey ended in a draw.
The man known as the Kingdom Warrior felt he had done enough to wrest the belt from Morrissey’s hands at the end of another bruising encounter last Friday night, but once again the tie was not scored the way he anticipated.
Limerick native Morrissey started strongly in Galway but Cronin recovered well and took the fight to the holder, so much so that he – and many
neutrals watching on - believed he was on the brink of being crowned Celtic Light Heavyweight champion.
The bout was judged to be a split decision draw, however, a result which left the Kerry boxer laid out on the canvas in dismay.
“It ended in a draw and it hurts more than the loss,” Cronin told Boxing Tickets NI shortly after the fight. “That’s the worst I've ever felt going back to that dressing room. That was tough.”
Another rematch could be on the cards but the Milltown man wants it to be at super middleweight – and he wants it to take place in Kerry.
A truly cracking game of rugby saw the Killarney lads prevail in front of a great crowd. The performance delighted all the Killarney RFC supporters who travelled en masse.
Well done to all players, coaches and team management.

Mismatch
Scaraveen (or, more accurately, ‘garbh shíon na gcuach’), that four-week period each year when the weather is so changeable, will be with us until midMay. One could get the weather of four seasons in the same day.
Although we were just one week into Scaraveen, on Saturday last at the Fitzgerald Stadium, there was no sound of the cuckoo heralding spring. And there was certainly no awakening of a new challenge to Kerry’s dominance when they strolled past Tipperary. No goals but a whopping 30 points in total: just five from the outclassed Tipperary and a return of 25 from Kerry. The devil himself knew beforehand that this was going to be a mismatch. Tipperary had a terrible league in the lower divisions, while Kerry survived in Division 1.
In fairness Tipperary kept out the high tide in the opening minutes and there was no score on the board by either side in the first 10 minutes. Was it just cat and mouse or what? More like hens scattering in all directions afraid of the fox. And then he struck. Paudie Clifford scored the opening point at the Lewis Road end.
David Clifford was not dominating but Kerry hit several points and it could have been worse for Tipperary just on the half-hour. A foot block on Clifford led to a penalty that was superbly saved by Michael O’Reilly in the Tipperary
goal. Disappointment for Tony Brosnan, the Kerry kicker. It’s a good sign for a player to put aside disappointment and storm back. That was Brosnan in the second half, kicking four glorious points into scoreboard end to add to the one he kicked in the first half. That penalty was the only real chance of a goal. Would that worry Jack? Not really at this stage, but they will be needed when tougher opposition comes into play.
The second half was a real stroll as Kerry racked up the points.
During those scoreless opening 10 minutes of cat and mouse interplay, we were left wondering who was chasing whom.
(Divert attention to view the evergreen beautiful green grass surface of the stadium. How do they get it in pristine shape even after the torrential rain of the past five weeks or so? Croke Park has so much money, expertise and manpower at its disposal to have the playing surface in tip-top shape. The limited resources available to the Fitzgerald Stadium Committee dictates that the urgent is seen to first. Your €20 admission fee does not go into the coffers of the Fitzgerald Stadium.)
Did Kerry learn anything? The popular verdict was that Kerry learned nothing from this one-sided contest. I see it differently. The Kerry management learned enough to know 12 of the start-
ing 15 for the latter stages of the real contest when Sam Maguire is down to 16 aspiring counties.
The rest will be off the main thoroughfare, hoping for some solace in the Tailteann Cup. Knowing 12 starters is important, but to regain Sam Maguire Kerry will need ready replacements to cover the inevitable injuries which are certain to come with games coming fast in a compressed 2023 championship schedule.
The Munster final v Clare will be played in Limerick in 10 days’ time. Kerry will get a good test from Clare for much of the game but I expect them to switch on the overdrive when they need it.
The All-Ireland quarter-finals are fixed for the weekend of July 1, the semi-finals on July 15/16, and the All-Ireland final on July 30. It is that concentrated. Some players will get injured, so a panel of readymade subs for all positions is essential.
Thankfully, Jack O’Connor is sensible enough to allow Kerry panel members who are not getting play time with the county to be released to their clubs. Sensible. Who wants to be sitting in the dugout for all games with no real opportunity to play? Instead, they will have football practice with their clubs. More about the Kerry campaign in the weeks ahead.
HALF-TIME DELIGHT
Killarney’s “Park” is where you want to
play until the day you just might get to line out in Croke Park. In that respect, it was great to see the half-time games involving juveniles. How many will play in Croke Park some day? Very few indeed. I recall seeing one of these juvenile half-time mini games decades ago and was very impressed by one player in particular. He wasn’t a big fella, but by God could he shield the ball and deliver pinpoint foot passes. That and more, especially balance and ingenuity to spot a better placed player to score. He came from a small club on the edge of Waterville and he made it good. The outstanding Declan O’Sullivan. I am sure there were others too, but the Dromid garsún had it. The X-factor.
KERRY HURLERS
The Kerry hurlers have their sights set on the Joe McDonagh Cup to make up for their three disappointments to date. There was no crowning glory in Croke Park on those days, only bitter disappointment.
They are on target to make it to the final again after a plucky 1-17 to 0-14 win away to Kildare. The game was a lot closer than the six-point margin suggests. There was just a puck of a ball between the sides in a hectic finish at a very poor and wet venue. Kerry struck an injury time goal.
Now they will meet Offaly, a tough assignment always, especially away. The top scorers were: P Boyle 0-5 (1f),

S Conway 0-5 (4fs), J Conway 1-2. If they secure a win over Offaly or Laois, they will qualify for the McDonagh Cup final. It may well come down to the final game against Laois and that fixture will be played in Tralee. Everything favours Kerry and that last-minute equalising point at home to Carlow in an earlier round will prove invaluable in a competition where each team is well capable of beating the others.
MUNSTER U20 TITLE
The Kerry U20s defeated Cork 2-12 to 1-6 in the Munster final on Monday evening last. That was very comprehensive when one considers the struggle they had to endure at home against Clare in Tralee in the quarter-final.
Tosach maith leath na h-oibre and that’s the time to strike. Tomás Ó Sé must have lifted the players out of it after the funeral versus Clare.
Cian McMahon led the charge, justifying the move to play him at number 11 rather than 13 or 15. In the very first minute he shot a great goal, quickly followed by another from Cillian Burke. That was the basis for the victory over the Rebels: two goals in the first five minutes. Remember that Kerry leaked two early goals to Clare at Tralee the week previously and were extremely lucky to come through.
William Shine was also very prominent, scoring six points (three from play).
KERRY: K Mackessy (Finuge); C O’Donoghue (St Mary's), A Moynihan (Rathmore), J Nagle (Austin Stacks); K O Sullivan (Glenflesk), A Heinrich (Austin Stacks), P O'Leary (Gneeveguilla); C Burke (Milltown/Castlemaine), C O’Connell (Castlegregory); J Clifford (St Michael's Foilmore), T O’Donnell (Castlegregory), K Evans (Keel); C McMahon (Dr Crokes), W Shine (Killarney Legion), A O Shea (Listry).
Subs: L Crowley (Glenflesk) for O’Shea (41); D O’Callaghan (Kilcummin) for O’Donoghue (48); C Lynch (Glenflesk) for O’Sullivan (54); C Foley (Kilcummin) for O’Donnell (56); R Stack (Beale) for Clifford (59).
Kerry will now meet Sligo in the All-Ireland semi-final and that will be tough. Sligo retained their Connacht title and have the big one in their sights.

U12 GIRLS CUP: Killarney Celtic 3-1 Killarney Athletic (Elizabeth Brosnan). Very good close game today. Celtic got off to a quick start with an early goal but Athletic kept going soaking up some strong pressure in the first to keep it at 1-0. A much-improved seconds half but went down 2-0. Athletic started to get more into the game and brought it back to 2-1 with 15 minutes to go. Athletic were pushing hard for the second but couldn't get the goal they needed. Celtic then got their 3rd at the very last kick of the game. Thanks to Celtic a for a great close match.

U14 CUP QF: Mastergeeha 4-1 Athletic (Cian Hegarty). Our young blues travelled to premier division side Mastergeeha in the 1/4 of the cup and came away empty handed. Playing against a strong wind and a physically bigger side we started really slow in the first half our boys conceded 3 goals from set pieces in the first 20 mins. Our lads eventually settled into the game and pulled one back when Alex Doolan beat 3 players and crossed for Cian Hegarty to score past the Mastergeeha keeper. HT 3-1. Our boys started the second half on the front foot but were hit by a sucker punch when the Mastergeeha striker broke away and slotted home. Our boys had the majority of the possession but couldn’t really fashion any real chances in the second half. Congratulations to Mastergeeha on a deserved win and we wish them all the best in the semi-final. Thanks to Tommy Kerrisk for reffing the game and for all the parents for coming out and supporting. FT Mastergeeha 4 Athletic 1.

SENIOR MEN: Our Senior Men lost their 100% record in the County League but not their unbeaten record as they drew with local rivals Dr Crokes in sunny Direen on Sunday. The visitors made full use of the breeze in the opening half running into a 0-10 to 0-6 half time lead, cousins Ryan O’Grady, Peter McCarthy and Finbarr Murphy sharing the first half scoring load. With the wind to their backs a visible improvement could
be seen in the second half with a Ryan O'Grady goal putting them 1-8 to 0-10 to the good. Dr Crokes responded well though, a Kieran O’Donoghue black card dovetailing with this period, and they pushed two clear again. But the pendulum swung again as Dr Crokes were reduced to fourteen men coinciding with our return to the full compliment. Points from Jamie O’Sullivan, Ryan O'Grady and crucially Darragh Lyne saw the game end in a share of the spoils. Team: Brian Kelly, Rob Leen, Danny Sheahan, Kieran O’Donoghue, Peter O’Sullivan, Darragh O’Doherty, Cian Gammell, Darragh Lyne (0-1), Padraig Lucey, Eoghan O’Sullivan, Jonathan Lyne, Finbarr Murphy (0-4), Ryan O’Grady (1-2), Jamie O’Sullivan (0-2), Peter McCarthy (0-2). Subs: Podge O’Connor, Jamie Alade, Luke O’Donoghue, Thomas Moriarty, Shaun Keane. The Senior B Team had a successful outing with a 1-14 to 0-11 win over Kilcummin in a game played in Direen earlier in the afternoon.
KERRY U20: William Shine was the star turn in Kerry's hard-fought win over Clare in the Munster U20 Football semi-final played in Austin Stack Park last Monday. Operating in the full forward line he chipped in with ten points, half from play, and Tomas O Ses side now head to Pairc Ui Chaoimh to face old foes Cork in the final which takes place on Monday April 24th. Not the only connection to the team, Darragh Fleming picked up an untimely injury when pushing for a starting berth, Brian Kelly is the goalkeeping coach while former Senior team trainer Pat Flanagan has them in peak shape.

Dr Crokes GAA
SENIOR FOOTBALL LEAGUE: Dr Crokes 0-14 Legion 1-11. Brian Looney opened the game with a fabulous long-range point from play. The first half was largely dominated by Micheál Burns who scored 3 points from play inside the first 13 minutes. With 5 minutes of the first half to be played, we were unlucky not to have added a goal to our tally after a high ball was kicked high into Tom Doyle. This was however cleared away by Brian Kelly in the Legion goals. Halftime Dr Crokes 0-10 Legion 0-6. Legion started the second half the livelier, scoring the first two points of the half, one free and one from play. After just 13 minutes, Legions Ryan O’Grady stuck a rocket of a ball passed Shane Murphy to give them a lead for the first time in the game. They were however reduced to 14 men, one minute later after a back card incident. Our boys took advantage of the numerical advantage, scoring two points from play during this time. It was legions turn to take advantage of a numerical surplus with 10 minutes left to be played when Mark O’Shea was black carded. In a game that could have easily been ours, legion scored two further points in injury time. Next up is Ballymacelligott at home on Sunday.
SENIOR HURLING LEAGUE: Dr Crokes 2-17 Causeway 0-21. Down three points at half time our team produced a second half of brave and skilful hurling to finish the game on a score line of Dr Crokes 2-17 Causeway 0-21, a two-point win. Our goals were scored by David Carroll and Brian O’Connor and special mention must go to our youngest players, Nathaniel Doncel, Charlie Keating and the already mentioned Brian O’Connor. They were greatly supported by our more experienced players and none of our team took a backward step from start to finish. We have endured many sad days in Causeway over the years but this performance and result eases a lot of pain. The hard gym work over the winter is paying dividends and it's on-

Glenflesk GAA
CREDIT UNION COUNTY LEAGUE: Division 2 Round 4. Glenflesk 1–7 Kenmare Shamrocks 2–9. Kenmare were the victors in this top of the table clash in Division 2 of the County League, with some high-quality football played, despite the nasty conditions. It was the home side who started the better, with the early ball into Patrick Darcy causing the visitors problems. He scored the first point of the evening, and a foul on him allowed Jeff O’Donoghue fire over the second. It was Kenmare who dominated the rest of the half. While Glenflesk were reliant on frees from Tommy Bowler and O’Donoghue, Kenmare’s forwards began to get on top, with Jimmy Lehane, Kevin O’Sullivan and Darren Allman all finding the target with well worked moves. There were errors from both teams, caused mainly by the conditions, but Kenmare were worthy of their two-point lead at the break. They controlled the ball well to
start the second half but could not add to their lead. A high tackle from Darragh Crowley then saw him receive a second yellow card, meaning Glenflesk would have an extra man for the majority of the second half. Kenmare were able to get body’s back and frustrate Glenflesk, with a superb O’Donoghue long range point, the only Glenflesk score in the next fifteen minutes. Kenmare then earned a penalty, that Tommy O’Sullivan blasted to the corner of the net. They now had a six-point lead, and victory looked secured. Glenflesk weren’t going away though. Denis O’Connor letting fly with as sweet a strike as you will see anywhere, blasting the ball to the net. They couldn’t create another goal chance though, and Jamie O’Regan’s twist and finish just before the end confirmed the victory. Report by Michael Healy.

CREDIT UNION COUNTY LEAGUE: Division 1, Round 4 - Milltown/Castlemaine 0-8 Kilcummin 2-10. Venue: Kilcummin. Hard luck to our Senior 'A' side and management who fell to their first defeat in Division 1 of the Credit Union County Senior Football League last weekend in Round as they travelled to take on Kilcummin. Our lads led 0-6 to 1-2 at half-time with Eanna O'Connor landing five points in the first half for us and Pa Wren tagging on the other. Sean and Philip O'Leary were Kilcummin's two first half point scorers whilst the goal came from Mark O'Shea after he capitalised on a defensive mix-up. The hosts may have felt disappointed to be down at the interval having kicked a lot of wides in the opening half. It was plain sailing for the home side in the second half as they outscored Milltown/Castlemaine 1-8 to 0-2 over the thirty minutes to run out convincing winners in the end by eight points on a score of 2-10 to 0-8. Eanna O'Connor tagged on our second half scores, but it wasn't to be on the night and all eyes will now turn to next weekend in an important Round 5 encounter at home to Gneeveguilla.

Muckross Rowing Club
SYMPATHY: The club extends its deepest sympathy to the Kenny family on the passing of Billy Kenny. Over many years, Billy was a tremendous supporter of Muckross RC and the tradition of rowing in Killarney. Many will fondly remember Billy from regatta days at O'Mahony's Point where he enjoyed many great occasions as a regatta official, race commentator and also interviewing the winning crews and spectators for the regatta video. Our thoughts and prayers are with Billy’s children Deirdre, Paul, Marie and Elaine, brother Freddie and extended family. At this time, we also remember Billy’s late wife Breda and deceased siblings Eileen, Micheál, Pat, Christine and Sheila. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam uasal.
LIMERICK REGATTA: Last weekend, the club was represented in just one event at the Limerick Regatta. Congratulations go to Aine Sweeney and Denise Casey, who were winners in their straight final of the Women’s Masters Eight event as part of a Carlow/Muckross composite crew. The gold medals echoed the success enjoyed by both clubs at Senior level when a composite crew of the same clubs won the Senior Eight title at the Irish Rowing Championships in 2009 - a crew in which Aine and Denise both featured.
EVENTS: The next events on the regatta calendar for MRC include the Lee Regatta at the Cork city marina on Saturday, May 13th and the Castleconnell Regatta on Saturday, May 20th. Both are 500m sprint events and will turn up the tempo for our crew.
