Life is precious. Life is a gift. Life changes. Sometimes in an instant. We suffer. We all suffer greatly. We lose our understanding of the world, our means of coping; a death, an illness, a broken relationship, a betrayal, a shattered dream, a lost job, an empty nest, stress, anxiety, depression, an addiction. Suffering is terrible. Suffering is calling for loving responsiveness. A crisis offers the opportunity to examine and understand the life we are living.

“We want our town back" - Councillor
A local councillor has hit out at the Government this week expressing real fear for the future of Killarney's tourism industry.
Cllr Niall ‘Botty’ O’Callaghan was at pains to point out that those seeking refuge need to be looked after - but warned that the Government needs to look at the big picture too.
He said that the influx of refugees and asylum seekers will have a serious financial impact on the town next summer and he is calling on all Government agencies to come up with a plan.
He is also going to raise the issue at next month’s Killarney Municipal District meeting.
Outside of Dublin Killarney has the highest ratio of refugees and asylum seekers per head of population in the entire country. Tourism operators fear that there is a lack of thought too in relation to the long term viability of the industry in the town. According to the Dept of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth there's currently a total of 360 International Protection (IP) applicants residing in Hotel Killarney including single males, females and families, and a total number of 572 International Protection applicants living in Killarney. There are 1,304 Ukrainian women and children housed
across Killarney town in a number of hotels since they were forced to leave Hotel Killarney two weeks ago.
Many in the town have expressed concern that this is not viable and it will have a knock-on effect on all tourism related businesses over the next few months.
While no one in the tourism industry denies that the refugees need help and refuge - a dearth of available accommodation in the Killarney area next summer is causing real fear amongst operators.
One hotelier said a regular golf tourism provider is actively not promoting Killarney as a potential destination next year as they cannot get accommodation in the area. Cllr O’Callaghan has concerns that all who are currently housed in hotels in Killarney have no reason to head into town each night and spend money in lo-
cal bars, souvenir shops and cafes. They are not taking jarvey rides, are not going to the cinema or attending concerts or other events in the town. Allied businesses are closing on a weekly basis. He and his family operate the Fáilte Hotel on College Street.
“A rumour went around town that I was taking in refugees, the amount of abuse I got was unbelievable,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “I understand that these countries are on their knees and these people need help, but from an economic point of view this does not make sense. The Government seems to have plenty of money to look after these people but are they going to look after small businesses that are suffering over decisions made by Government? We want our town back."

Kerry’s tourism industry at risk of being “dismantled”
| By Sean Moriarty
Local TD Danny Healy-Rae has told the Dáil that Kerry’s tourism industry could be “dismantled” as a result of the “effect the very significant number of refugees and asylum seekers coming into this country”.
Deputy Healy-Rae raised his concerns with the Taoiseach Michael Martin in the Dáil on Wednesday.
“I am calling for a frank and open debate on the impact and effect the very significant number of refugees and asylum seekers coming into this country is having on our services, be it doctors,
social welfare offices, hospitals, education and our hospitality industry in Kerry. We are very worried that it could be dismantled,” he said. “I am saying to the Taoiseach that it is not enough to say the Government will provide beds and a roof over their heads. We need to have the other services. Our own people cannot get into social welfare offices.”
There are about 1,304 Ukrainians housed across Killarney with the majority are living in hotels. He is concerned that suitable full-time accommodation will not be found by the beginning of the tourism industry next March. Either Killarney will face a hotel night shortage or there will be a repeat of the scenes witnessed earlier this month
when several refugees were told, with 48 hours notice, that they are being transferred to a different town. A massive public outcry prevented the move at the time.
“I am looking for an honest and open debate here inside in the chamber. We are representing County Kerry here and our tourism industry could be dismantled together with what has been happening on housing with the closing down of so many beds in Airbnb accommodation. Where are we going to be in March?” added Healy Rae.
Martin denied that Killarney’s tourism industry was at risk.
“With the greatest will in the world, I do not believe we could ever dismantle Ker-
ry tourism or Kerry hospitality,” he said.
“It is an impossibility. It cannot happen. I have been there too often, including last summer, and there is not a hope that it could be dismantled. It is so strong and robust. There are genuine issues in certain towns. We have a list of towns that have gone way beyond the call of the duty when compared to other areas. We saw that recently in Killarney, where the community responded very generously. We appreciate that."
Aside from any potential risks to the tourism industry, Healy-Rae also warned that other services are being neglected.
“The Government has not provided one extra doctor or one extra man for the social welfare office,” he added.

The Lake named Ireland’s Best Four Star Hotel
Following an in-depth inspection earlier this year, the family run property was named Ireland’s Best Four Star Hotel and, the renowned title of Ireland’s Best Chef was presented to the hotel’s Executive Chef, Noel Enright. In addition, and in keeping with its reputation for culinary excellence, The Lake Hotel also received the award for Ireland’s Fine Dining Experience.
Having received both regional and national titles in the above categories, the
hotel was also awarded Munster’s Best Gourmet Getaway, totalling seven accolades received by the Killarney hotel.
“We are extremely proud of our team," Sales and Marketing Manager, Sheila O’Callaghan, said.
"To be recognised for excellence across so many categories is a fantastic achievement and to take three overall titles is phenomenal. These awards are a true testament to the hard work and dedication of our outstanding team.”
The Irish Hotel Awards celebrate the amazing commitment and dedication of the hospitality industry in Ireland to providing simply outstanding guest experiences. The awards ceremony was held in The Radisson Blu Athlone on Monday where close to 400 people, from every sector of the hospitality industry, cele-
brated the best of the best.
To be named Ireland’s Best Four Star Hotel recognises all areas of the guest experience from check in to departure and all the services provided in between, an accolade that commends the efforts of every department within the hotel. The Lake Hotel is owned and operated by Huggard brothers, Tony, Niall, Colman and Joe. Each year, the family invest in the enhancement of the hotel, ensuring the highest of standards are maintained for guests.
Executive Chef Noel Enright, awarded Ireland’s Best Chef, has led the kitchen team at The Lake Hotel since 2014. Noel manages a team of chefs for The Lakeside Bistro, The Piano Lounge and The Castlelough Restaurant. Noel and his team have designed seasonally attuned menus, using the best of locally sourced produce. The Castlelough Restaurant receiving the accolade for Ireland’s Fine Dining Experience applauds exemplary service and exquisite dining, and this is due to the hard work and commitment of Restaurant Manager, Javier González, Chef Noel Enright and both their teams.
€1.26m distributed to many worthy charities
| By Michelle Crean
A whopping €1.26 million was distributed to multiple charities on Friday evening last in Fossa.
Those in charge of the Ring of Kerry Cycle were delighted to invite representatives from the many charities benefitting from the event which took place in July after a two year absence due to COVID.
"The event turned out to be a great success despite inclement weather especially down south," PRO for the Ring of Kerry Cycle, Cathal Walshe, speaking about the summer event, said.
Charities from all over came to join in the celebration at the weekend. The main beneficiaries were Ard Chúram Listowel, Banna Search and Rescue, Cunamh Iveragh, Cahersiveen, Down Syndrome Ker-
ry, Irish Community Air Ambulance and Breakthrough Cancer Research.
"In addition we had the Irish Red Cross, South West Counselling Service, Killarney Water Rescue, Irish Pilgrimage Trust, Enable Ireland and Brú Columbanus, all of whom received €8,000," Cathal added.
"€2,000 was allocated to 22 other charities throughout the county. The overall figure for this year came to a whopping €1.26 million an increase of €150,000 on the 2019 running. For this we have to thank all the charities, volunteers of which we had over a thousand, the three food stations in Cahersiveen, Kenmare and Killarney and the welcome home in the Beech Road car park. We are also indebted to An Garda Síochána and Killarney Municipal District for their cooperation. Roll on July 1, 2023!"

Town centre cafes close without any warning
Two well-known town centre cafes closed without warning this week with the loss of up to 16 jobs.
Sister businesses Jam Café and The Crepe House on Old Market Lane did not open on Sunday morning as expected.
Jam, which has had several different owners in recent years, has had a difficult past.
It reopened in October 2021, as part of the TOBA Restaurant Group after the original company fell into trouble.
The Crêpe House Killarney opened around the same time as an alternative to Jam, serving coffee and waffles and catering for a younger crowd.
Current management separated from TOBA around November last year.
The Killarney Advertiser attempted to contact current management but did not get a response.
It is understood that up to 16, both fulltime and part-time jobs, have been lost as a result of the closures.
David's 170 mile remembrance run
He is the well known face of the Tatler Jack - and now he's set himself a challenge to run 170 miles for the Kerry Hospice Foundation.
| By Michelle Crean
For the month of November David Looney plans to run 170 miles to raise funds for Palliative Care Unit UHK through Kerry Hospice.
He is running in memory of his sister-inlaw, Geraldine O'Connor, who passed away last November after a five year battle with cancer.
Geraldine was only 49 years of age when she passed.
"In her final weeks and months Geraldine was a patient of Palliative Care Unit where she was cared for by the most
amazing staff," he said.
"The care she received and the facilities provided to her and her family gave her loved ones great comfort in what was the most challenging time of their lives. This fundraiser is to give back and to thank those amazing staff of this great facility."
David will start on November 1 and finish on Geraldine’s first anniversary on November 30.
Updates of his run can be seen on Tatler Jack social media pages and on the GoFundMe page '170 Miles in November in memory of Geraldine' where he has a €2,000 goal set up.

Killarney Celtic Club face massive bill following vandalism
| By Sean Moriarty
Killarney Celtic Football Club face a bill that could run into thousands of euros after a pitchside dugout was vandalised for the second time.
Club officials found the damaged dugout on Friday night last when they turned on the flood lights on what is known at the club’s second pitch. As this pitch is only used during busier times, club officials don’t really know
how long the dugout lay damaged. They have reported the incident to the Gardai and a criminal damage investigation is underway.
The club don’t know yet how much the repair job will cost especially given the current rising costs of construction material.
“This is particularly frustrating for [chairman] Tim Jones. He and a group of club members re-built that dugout about two years ago after it was damaged before,” said vice chair Paul Sherry. “This is likely to run in to thousands of euros.”

Monster Hallowe'en fancy dress parade
Just when you thought it was safe to go back into the building –maybe it’s time to think again.
After a two-year pandemic enforced absence, during which they hid away in dark and squalid recesses, ghouls and phantoms, beasts and brutes, menacing monsters and cackling witches are reportedly descending, in strange spooky swarms, on Killarney Outlet Centre as the Hallowe'en season rapidly approaches.
The public is advised to be afraid – be very afraid – if they find themselves in the vicinity of Killarney Outlet Centre this Sunday (October 30) as things might go bump – not in the night – but in broad daylight.
The floors of the popular shopping destination have been creaking during the otherwise still witching hours as the spooks make their own plans for their favourite time of the year.
Defiant as ever, however, the children of Killarney will not fear a zombie takeover as they make plans of their own to celebrate with a Hallowe'en party to remember with fantastic prizes and free
fun activities for the whole family, from 2pm to 6pm.
FANCY DRESS PARADE
The colourful and maybe just a little bit scary Hallowe'en fancy dress parade will take place upstairs in the centre and the lucky winners will receive some super prizes, including a Razor Sport Scooter, Nerf Magstrike and Owl Squishi for the Best Dressed Boy and a Razor Sport Scooter, Crazart Shimmer n’ Sparkle Tie Dye Studio and Pussycat Squishi for the Best Dressed Girl, both sponsored by World of Wonder.
The Best Dressed Family, in association with the Christmas in Killarney festival, will receive a family pass for two adults and two children (under 12) to visit Santa at ANAM on the East Avenue Road, Killarney and the lucky family will also receive three occasion platters for their next family event from O’Brien’s Irish Sandwich Bar in Killarney Outlet Centre.
The Best Dressed Adult, meanwhile, will
collect a €50 voucher for DV8 which is also in the centre.
Registration for the fancy dress parade will open from 3.30pm with an entry fee of just €1 per person and the judges are looking forward to seeing some really fantastic and unusual costumes this year. Every child who participates in the fancy dress parade will be given a free goody bag.
There will be free bouncy castles with A Time to Party, free Hallowe'en face painting, floor games and balloon modelling while the incredible Tony Wonder will be on hand with his famous magic shows at 2.30pm and 4.30pm.
As an added novelty, Killarney Candle Makers will also be set up to help create personalised candles with a small charge applying.
Paul Sherry, General Manager at Killarney Outlet Centre, said he can’t wait for the mayhem and madness to commence.
“Hallowe'en is a great time for the children to be children and I know families are really looking forward to our fancy dress party and all the free fun activities, to which all are welcome,” he said.

Sophie's choice wins national photo award All welcome to Lions Club open night
| By Michelle Crean
Young Sophie Mai Woulfe's choice of photo in a schools competition has won a national award.
Looking happy as she gets ready to eat her freshly made pizza was a winner in the eyes of the judges in the Junior Category Ireland’s National School Photography Awards (INSPA).
Entitled 'The Pizzeria', the Kilcummin NS pupil beat off stiff competition from schools around the country.
INSPA is a nationwide, children's photography competition and creative well-being initiative, currently open to primary schools in Ireland. It rewards schools for implementing creative well-being approaches across the curriculum. It also gives young pupils a unique opportunity to develop new and creative life skills alongside a platform to showcase their individual talents.
Ms Muireann McCarthy's class entered some fantastic entries into the competition and the judges explained how there was an overwhelmingly high response to the competition.
"Kilcummin NS is delighted to have
been selected as the national winning school," Muireann told the Killarney Advertiser.
"The school is so proud of all of our entrants and especially of Sophie Mai and are delighted to receive a range of prizes with the award including a brand new INSTAX Mini 11 camera for the school. Well done to Sophie Mai."

If you’re interested in helping your community then it might be time to find out what your local Lions Club does.
The perfect opportunity to do so is Thursday, November 10 at the KDYS Youth Centre in Killarney where Killarney Lions Club members will talk you through what they're about during their open night.
The Killarney Lions Club, through its members, assists various groups and individuals in and around the community. Lions do this through voluntary activities, fundraising and by holding various types of events in support of a great many local causes.
The open night will be an informal event where everyone can move around between different exhibitions about Killarney Lions Club activities. Lions Club volunteers will be present to chat about
initiatives such as the Annual Christmas Food Appeal, environmental work, the Kerry Clubs Fair and providing support to local community organisations. Many of the activities involve Transition Year students from Killarney’s three secondary schools, who will also be represented on the night.
“The Lions motto is ‘we serve’ and it’s as simple as that really, we try to do things every year that help individuals and groups in the Killarney area," President of Killarney Lions Club, Denis Doolan, said.
"A lot of people might not know that, so we look forward to welcoming anyone who can come along to the open night, see and hear about our various activities and maybe even get involved afterwards.”
The open night will take place from 7pm –8.30pm and free tea/coffee will be available. KDYS Killarney is located at Fair Hill, Eircode V93 W0FH.

Marathon challenge in memory of Linda Eviston
| By Sean Moriarty
One year on from his initial hopes of contesting the Dublin City Marathon Pat Eviston will finally get the chance this Sunday.
Pat took up long distance running as a means of coping with the death of his wife Linda in October 2020 from cancer.
He had entered last year’s Dublin City Marathon but it got canned at the last minute due to ever-changing COVID-19 rules.
This prompted him and his two children Erik and Alannah to run their own local marathon on the day visiting areas connected with the much missed Linda’s life. These locations included her parental home in Glenflesk, Loreto School and the Brook Lodge Hotel where she worked.
Since then he has run two other tradi-

tional marathons in Vancouver, Canada and also in Cork and one Ultra Marathon in Killarney all the while raising funds for various cancer charities.
“This helped me a lot too, as well local charities benefitting,” he told the Killarney Advertiser.
Sunday’s Dublin City Marathon will be his final long-distance race as a fundraiser and funds from the run will go to Kerry-based charity Comfort for Chemo.
“They’re a fantastic local charity run by volunteers with the goal of getting a new chemo unit for Kerry. This is badly needed as the current unit, despite everyone’s best efforts, needs to be renewed. People with cancer are suffering enough so we want to help them get the best treatment possible,”
Pat said.

Aghadoe woman awarded the Freedom of the City of London
| By Sean Moriarty
Well-known Killarney woman Tara Cronin has been granted the freedom of the City of London.
The Freedom of the City of London started around 1237 and developed into freedom or right to trade.
In 1835 eligibility for the freedom of the city was extended to anyone who lived in, worked in or had a strong connection to London.
These days it is largely ceremonial and bestowed upon people in recognition for their personal achievements and charitable work.
London-based Aghadoe native Tara, is the Events and Fundraising Manager with ICAP, an Irish Mental Health charity in London. She was the founder of the London-version of the Darkness into Light charity walk and is the former long-serving secretary of the Kerry Association.
She received the Freedom of the City of London from Lord Mayor Vincent Keaveny who is head of the City of London
Time to cheer on the girls
| By Michelle Crean
It's time to cheer on two talented girls who have been selected to represent their country next year.
Emma Rose Byrne and Katlyn Moynihan will compete at the Cheerleading World Championships in Orlando Florida next April.
They will represent Ireland in the performance cheer category hip hop.
Emma and Katlyn have been training with Killarney Scorchers Cheerleading
from a young age and both girls still train on a weekly basis with the club as well as volunteering their time back to their younger peers.
"Emma and Katlyn are an inspiration to all their team mates," coach Hayley Murphy told the Killarney Advertiser.
"The girls are working hard on their routine and will travel to the UK in the New Year to train with hip hop World Champions ADA Dark Angels UK."
Emma and Katlyn are seeking sponsorship to help assist towards their competition expenses, she added.
Corporation and the first Irish Lord Mayor of the city in 850 years.
She is also a board member of the Irish Women’s Network.
Tara Cronin was presented with the award in the Mansion House in the City of London.
She will be amongst the first recipients to have King Charles III on her award.
She was joined on the day by her parents Jerry and Margaret and brother Eoghan and a group of close friends that made the trip from Killarney.
“I feel extremely proud to have been awarded the Freedom of the City of London by the Lord Mayor of City of London in such a historic building. It is a special day and so privileged to be able to share with my parents Margaret and Jerry and my brother Eoghan family and friends,” she told the Killarney Advertiser.
The celebration continued in the nearby Rising Sun, a renowned Kerry pub in the heart of the city and the following day at Corrigan’s Mayfair where Tara previously worked under Michelin star Chef Richard Corrigan.
They have started weekly hip hop classes for adults on Fridays from 6.45pm to 7.45pm. The classes will run every Friday in Killarney Scorchers Cheerleading new premises on Muckross Road.
This will help subsidise some of the competition expenses the girls face, she explained.
"I am very proud of both Emma and Katlyn, they are an inspiration to their teammates. I am proud to have coached two hard working young girls who have grown into two wonderful young ladies. They have given so much to the club and their younger peers. I hope everyone supports both Katlyn and Emma on their journey to World Championships."
GIVE THEM A CHEER: Katlyn Moynihan and Emma Rose Byrne will compete at the Cheerleading World Championships in Orlando Florida next year.

Marie's act of kindness continues
Marie Carroll-O'Sullivan's act of kindness continued this week as the photographer and author donated money to two charities and presented a very special gift.
| By Michelle Crean
She gave two cheques for €7,100 each to the Irish Cancer Society and also to Pieta, Nathan's Walk - the proceeds from her lockdown book 'Behind the Mask'.
But not only that, she gifted a copy to Diane Collins Twohig local community Garda and wife of the late Garda Paudie Twohig. And inside was very personal as Marie had asked the people who featured in the book to sign it - together with the signatures of the Gardai on both of their units.
"Marie Carroll O’Sullivan isn’t just a dreamer, she’s a believer and a doer," Diane said this week.
"'Behind the Mask' is an incredible piece of work, Marie you have found the positive side of the pandemic and captured the very spirit of what has got all of us through the last two years. It's when things seems worse that you must not

Get your tickets before the clock strikes midnight or it might be too late to see the incredible talents of local students on stage.
It's the first time post-COVID that Killarney Community College has staged an event and they've an exciting night in store with their latest production 'Cinderella: A tale of love at first sight', the anarchy of societal expectations and the grandeur of romanticised patriarchy in the form of a happily ever after. While the original screenplay offered each of these traditional aspects, there is much more to be said about the classic fairytale told from a modern perspective.
Under the direction of costume manager Mary Fuller, musical director Joanna Hughes, and producer Mike Lynch, the students have turned the children’s classic into a piece grounded in reality. And rather than presenting Cinderella in its traditional form, these talented students made a point to acquaint the characters within the production to modern representations.
Preparations for this year’s Panto have been underway since the start of the school year.
The first show debuts on Tuesday, November 8 in the school followed by a second night on Wednesday November 9. With rehearsals ongoing each week
quit. I am so grateful for all that Paudie and I had. I move forward each day, although heartbroken, with that in mind he lived for our girls and for us, I cherish that and we live on. To help others, to give back and thank all that supported us and continue to do so makes me so happy. I know that Paudie is smiling down on us, and like me, is so proud that we could be part of this fantastic project," she said.
"A broken heart opens you to the very core, it leaves sharp and very jagged edges but the kindnesses and support I have received has helped round and smooth these, this has gotten me through the hard days and the nights that feel like forever. So, from the bottom of my broken heart, I thank you, the people of Killarney town, the Irish Cancer Society, its supporters and Marie Carroll O’Sullivan for all
that you are and all that you do."
Marie O'Carroll from Pieta House - Nathan's Walk also thanked Marie for her donation.
“As parents of Nathan we are humbled that Marie Carroll-O'Sullivan chose Nathan's Walk for Pieta House as one of three beneficiaries from the sales of her book ‘Behind the Mask’. We are delighted to accept the cheque for such a worthy cause that's close to our hearts. Each year since 2011, in the month of May, we organise the walk in honour of Nathan. The monies raised through this means, and through Marie's kind donation, it will help provide a free therapeutic approach to people who are in suicidal distress and those who engage in self harm.”
Eugene O'Sullivan from the Kerry branch of the Irish Cancer Society said that Marie Carroll-O'Sullivan "keeps giving".
"During lockdown Marie was on her bike with her camera photographing people and bringing a smile to their faces. She came up with the amazing idea to put photos together and produce 'Behind the Mask', of which she has made the Irish Cancer Society a beneficiary and we will be forever grateful for that.”
Students will have a ball!
it's drawing ever closer to opening night and the cast are having a ball!
At the moment, the halls of Killarney Community College are lined with sparkles, bloomers, petticoats - you name it!
Costumes are being sown and beaded to get ready for the big dress rehearsal. The talented staff of KCC have come
together to make a 'seamless' array of costumes!
"There is great excitement around the panto as it is the first production we have staged since COVID," music teacher and director, Ms Hughes, said. "The students and staff have been putting in an enormous amount of time and
effort into it with many staying back for hours after school and giving up their free time on Saturdays. We are really happy with how things are going and can't wait to bring it to the big stage and a sell out crowd."
Tickets are still on sale through the school office.

Muckross car park to get an upgrade
Works
| By Michelle Crean
The contracts were signed this week by the Director General of the NPWS and the Chair of the Board of Trustees of Muckross House.
Visiting Killarney, Minister Malcolm Noonan TD, Minister of State for Heritage and Electoral Reform, along with Niall O’Donnchú, Director General of the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) and the Trustees of Muckross House, announced the commencement of works to upgrade the car park at Muckross House and Gardens in Killarney National Park. This is a significant project involving upgrading of the existing car park, extension of the existing bus parking area and the upgrade of the overflow car park. Furthermore, a new surface water drainage system is to be installed to serve the entire car parking area. These works will allow for the current and expected in-
crease in visitor numbers to the wonderful surrounds of Killarney National Park, and to Muckross House and Gardens in particular.
"This project has been long in the planning and I am delighted to see works getting underway now," the Minister said.
Chairman of the Board, Donal Hickey welcomed the works.
"We have worked closely with the NPWS over a long period to ensure a strong, sustainable project plan was in place to progress these essential works to upgrade the car park and the bus parking area," Donal said.
"We apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused by the works but I can assure our visitors we will make every effort to ensure minimal disruption to public traffic, and we will endeavour to keep the house and gardens open to the extent possible throughout the works."
Man and his
success for Kilcummin
| By Sean Moriarty
Well known Kilcummin sheepdog handler Tom O’Sullivan has come out on top in one of the most prestigious trials in the world.
Tom and his border collie 'North Hill Tess' have been declared the winners of the famous BBC show, ‘One man and his dog’.
Tom is no stranger to success; he won last year’s International Supreme Championships in Aberystwyth in Wales. This international competition earned him an invite to compete in ‘One man and his Dog’, a competition he describes as “the TV programme that everyone associates with sheepdog trialling”.
“I’m delighted with the win. There is a lot of luck involved but Tess was on form and worked exceptionally well,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “It was an honour to represent Ireland and bring the trophy back to Kilcummin. We spend a lot of time training for these sort of events so it's great that days like this make it all worthwhile. We’re delighted with the feedback and congratulations all week. It's very much appreciated.”
The popular TV show was first aired by the BBC in 1976 and continues today as a special annual episode of Countryfile. Although recorded last month on a farm in north Wales, the final was aired last Sunday evening and watched by millions of viewers.

Irish Credit Unions top league table for the eight year
Credit unions have topped the league table for the best customer experience in Ireland at the official CXi awards announced this week. This is a record-breaking eighth year in a row that credit unions have topped the CXi poll.
“Once again, we see Irish credit unions top the poll for best customer experience in this year’s CXi report," Mark Murphy, CEO of Killarney Credit Union, said.
"This is a huge endorsement of the excellent customer experience we offer our members on a daily basis through face to face engagement in our offices, and through our online and digital offerings. In a year which has seen Ulster Bank and KBC withdraw from the Irish market, more and more consumers are realising the importance of excellent service from a financial provider with a social ethos. We put our members’ needs at the heart
of everything we do, and we will always be there for them. It’s no coincidence that we’ve seen a significant increase in the number of consumers who have switched their bank accounts to our credit union since the beginning of the year. The results from the CXi report speak for themselves and it is a testament to the dedication and the hard work of staff and volunteer directors in Killarney Credit Union and in every credit union in Ireland.”
The Customer Experience Insight (CXi) Report is published annually by the CX Company based on a survey carried out on their behalf by Amárach Research.
Over 28,000 experiences were evaluated using the CX Framework, including value, channel usage, how important employees are to the customer experience, and net promoter score (NPS) which measures the loyalty of customers to a company.
The magic of Christmas is set to begin officially this November 26 when Killarney Sleigh Rides get on the road.
SLEIGH: Killarney Sleigh Rides are ready to get on the road this November and places are filling up fast.

Velo Kenmare hailed a resounding success
Cyclists from all over Ireland took on the challenging, mountainous course of Velo Kenmare, a 135km of Ireland’s steepest climbs, on Saturday.
Ireland’s newest and toughest cycling event is a timed loop route starting and finishing in Kenmare, with a total climbing distance of 1,650m.
Cyclists enjoyed fabulous autumn weather for this inaugural cycle with blue skies, sun and dry weather holding up for this scenic tour of Kerry.
The tough mountain climbs took cyclists over Molls Gap, Ballaghbeama Pass, Ballaghasheen and Coomakista.
Participating cyclists were given €20 ‘Velo Dollars’/vouchers to spend in local shops redeemable against goods and services in Kenmare.
Overall fastest male cyclist was Jerry McCarthy who finished in 03:49:01, followed by Ewan Buckley in 03:49:14,and Bernard Sweeney in 03:51:35.
Overall fastest female cyclist was Diane Behan in a time of 04:16:08, followed by Astrid Sasses in 04:41:39 and Regina Sheehan in 04:56:32.
Fastest male and fastest female over four categorised mountain climbs including Molls Gap, Ballaghbema Pass, Ballaghasheen and Coomakista, were crowned King and Queen of the Mountains. The King of the Mountains was
Ewan Buckley in 3 hours 49 minutes, and Queen of the Mountains was Diane Behan in 4 hours 16 minutes.
No stranger to cycling events, Velo Kenmare is managed by Elite Events Management, who also successfully deliver the Ring of Beara Cycle, Ride Dingle and Wicklow 200.
“We are very happy to bring this challenging cycling event to Kenmare and support local business and community groups in the process," event organiser, Ollie Kirwin, said.
"Kenmare has always proved a very welcoming and friendly host town for many of our events, and we hope to build on Velo Kenmare as a regular cycling sportive in the coming years. It was designed to be a tough event for the serious cyclist and by all accounts the feedback was it was tough enough! In this way, we were also able to showcase the most stunning parts of Kerry and the country to our visiting participants, via iconic views from some of Ireland’s highest mountain passes and most scenic coastal roads.”
Lorraine's lockdown inspired career change
Lorraine Carey who used lockdowns to study as an accountant featured in a brand new podcast on Tuesday night.
Best-selling authors of the ‘Oh My God, What a Complete Aisling’ book series Emer McLysaght and Sarah Breen host the ‘OMG! What a Complete Education!’ podcast every Tuesday night. They both studied and met at Ballyfermot College of Further Education in Dublin. Carey originally studied Psychology in the University of Limerick, but moved back to Killarney when the recession hit, and worked in hospitality for a number of years. In this week’s episode, Carey discussed changing the trajectory of her career with the help of Kerry ETB.
During the pandemic, she returned to education and completed the Ac-
countancy Technician Diploma at Kerry College of Further Education and Training. In both her first and second-year exams, Carey scored the third highest result in the country, out of a total of 705 students.
She now works as an accounting technician at O'Rourke & Co. Chartered Accountants in Killarney.
“It may sound cliché to say, but the people on this podcast are inspirational because they are regular people who have found a way to change their lives and get where they want to be through education. We all know someone who didn’t have a great experience in school or didn’t get the points they needed for a particular course, or who never got any qualifications at all. But hearing Lorraine’s story, it shows listeners just how many opportunities there are out there,” said co-host Sarah Breen.
Bus Éireann price increases
Bus services to and from the Killarney Bus Éireann depot have gone up in price since last Friday.
Bus Éireann’s inter-city Expressway service officials say that price increase are as a result of rising costs that the business is facing.
Changes to Route 14 which serves Killarney to Limerick from Killarney Outlet Centre will see the adult return fare increased by €2.50 to €21.50.
Route 40, which serves Tralee to Cork and stops off in Killarney, also costs more.

Intimate ceremony made for an extra special day
It was the small personal details that made the wedding day of Lisa O'Connor and Sean Healy extra special.
On Thursday, October 6 they gathered with their family and friends in The Lodge at the Ballygarry Estate and Spa for a humanist ceremony celebrated by Willie Collins.
Kilflynn woman Lisa, who works in O'Carroll's Engineering, is daughter of Bridget and Andrew Byrne. Sean, from Kilcummin and a well known staff member in Carryout on Muckross Road, is son of Johnny and Breda Healy. The bridal party included Lisa's best friends Laura McGaley as Maid of Honour and Bridesmaid Lorraine O'Connor, while Sean's sister Diane Healy also helped out with bridesmaid duties.
Best Man was Michael Brosnan, while Groomsmen were Steven McSweeney and Don McCarthy, all friends of the groom.
Small touches which made the day extra special were the letters that they read to each other during the vows and using Lisa's grandfather John's tie for the hand fastening ceremony.
"He only passed away last year and I wanted to include him in some way. It was the tie he wore on his wedding day in
1969 and he gave it to my mother some years ago."
They also had a special box for all their wedding keepsakes which they can open each year on their anniversary. During the ceremony their rings were passed around to everyone present which added a very personal touch.
The couple had their first date in Gallys Bar and Restaurant in Tralee and the blossoming romance stepped up a notch in July 2019 when Sean surprised Lisa by getting down on one knee in Italy.
"He frightened the life out of me," Lisa, who was hoping he'd pop the question while there, added.
"He didn't do it on the first or second night so I wasn't expecting it on the second last day!"
Then COVID hit so the couple put off setting a date.
"We decided in January to organise it this year and it was quick fire! The weather was perfect."
Sean and Lisa, who live in Deer Close, Killarney, spent a few nights with both families before heading to Lanzarote for a 12 night trip.

HEALTH & FITNESS
Advice - By Kayleigh Cronin
Kayleigh is available for advice and fitness consultations, at info@activate.ie
www.activate.ie
Body composition is only one method of tracking progress
One of the many benefits of our Personal Training (PT) programme is the access our coaches have to our inbody scanner.
Although body composition is only one of many methods of tracking progress, it is often the one people can be most concerned about, in particular bodyweight. There are many different aspects to consider when we monitor the progress our clients make, many of which go unnoticed by the client and they can be as, if not more, important than bodyweight progress.
Progress in any fitness or wellness journey is multifaceted. At Activate, we as coaches ensure our clients take a holistic approach to their health and fitness journey. We meet our personal training clients weekly, and programme accordingly based on their goals. However, there are many hours left in the week outside of their scheduled PT hours. Our goal at Activate is to set our clients up with a skillset that allows them to take control of their own journey. In order to do this, we advise clients on other important facets of a healthy lifestyle, including, but not limited to:
• Exercise habits outside of personal training sessions
• Fluid consumption
• Mindfulness
• Maintaining a regular sleeping pattern
• Enjoying a balanced diet
• Maintaining a non-sedentary lifestyle (i,e. getting those steps in!)
THE INBODY
Unfortunately, many people focus too much of their attention on what the weighing scales say. There are many flaws with using the scales as your only measure of progress. The accuracy of results can be affected by many components including whether you have eaten or not, weighing yourself at the same time every day, water retention, menstruation and many more. The most obvious weakness is that the majority of people use a ‘regular’ weighing scale, which only tells you your bodyweight and not your body composition. This means that it cannot display your skeletal muscle mass and fat mass values. It can be very disheartening for clients when they have put in a lot of work and don’t see the results they were hoping for on the ‘regular’ scales. At Activate, we are lucky to have the use of the inbody, which gives us a broad
range of results including weight, Skeletal Muscle Mass (SMM), Body Fat (PBF) and water ratio. Often clients may see their weight (kg) hasn’t changed but they may have lost body fat and gained muscle mass. Similarly, it is an equally important tool for clients who need to put on weight or muscle mass.
CLIENT WIN
A client of mine recently completed their second inbody, six weeks after they started PT and six weeks after their first inbody. On top of giving their all in PT sessions, this client has really bought into the holistic approach to their health journey and has made lifestyle changes that are affecting them positively. On doing their second inbody, they noticed that their weight hadn’t changed much. After explaining the other values (SMM and PBF) they realised that they had dropped 1.6% body fat and gained .5kg in muscle mass. More importantly, they feel like they have more energy, they are sleeping better and the majority of their familiar aches and pains (back, knees, hips) are gone.
Results like these are achievable when the right approach is taken. This client now knows that for them, what the ‘normal’ scale says in relation to their bodyweight (kg) isn’t important as their goal is to increase muscle and lose fat, which they are achieving. On top of this, they are leading a healthier lifestyle and feel the impact the changes they have made are of more value than what any scales say.
Don’t rely on your bodyweight results being your only measure of progress, you may be under-appreciating all the other improvements you are making.

Deposits for private rented accommodation
In today’s property market, finding rented accommodation that is affordable is particularly challenging.
With a limited supply of rented property available and huge demand, finding somewhere to rent can be a stressful experience. The pressure is on to try to secure a place to live by putting down a deposit as quickly as possible. Before parting with any money though, and to avoid becoming a victim of rental scammers you should:
• Always visit the property – don’t agree to rent it through a website or social media
• Never transfer funds electronically to someone claiming to be an agent/ landlord until you are sure you have a legitimate transaction
• Check that the keys work and that you have full and correct contact details for the landlord/agent who is authorised to rent the property.
• You should never hand over a deposit to a prospective landlord/agent until you are sure that you are happy with the condition of the property, the terms and conditions of the letting and are willing to rent it.
HOLDING DEPOSITS
Some landlords or agents may ask you for a holding deposit when you decide to take the accommodation. This is a sum of money you pay to hold the property before you sign the lease and enter into a contract with the landlord. You should always get a written receipt for a holding deposit.
SECURITY DEPOSITS
You will be asked for a security deposit before moving into the accommodation. The landlord holds this deposit as security to cover any rent arrears, bills owing or damage beyond normal wear and tear at the end of the tenancy.
You cannot be forced to make upfront payments of more than two month’s rent. This includes a deposit of a month’s rent and one month’s rent in advance. This restriction applies to all tenancies created from 9 August 2021 and is set out in the Residential Tenancies (No. 2) Act 2021.
You should get a receipt for any deposit you pay. Your rent book should state how much of a deposit you paid.
RECORD OF CONDITION AT START AND END OF TENANCY
When you move in, your landlord must provide you with an inventory of the contents of the property. You should keep a record of the condition
of everything that is listed, taking photos if possible, and agree this in writing with your landlord.
Before leaving the property you should clean it thoroughly, remove all your possessions, dispose of all rubbish and take dated photos to show the condition in which it was returned. This will be very useful if you find that the landlord is reluctant to return your deposit and you need to take a case to the Residential Tenancies Board (RTB). Ideally you should request to be present at a final inspection of the property with the landlord/agent.
LOSING THE DEPOSIT
When you leave a property at the end of the agreed rental period or after giving the agreed notice, the landlord should return your security deposit, promptly and in full.
However, if you leave before the end of the agreed period, the landlord may keep your deposit, even if you have given notice. It is also possible that you may also be liable for the amount of rent due until the end of the lease, depending on what is stated in the lease agreement.
You may lose some or all of your deposit if:
• You leave without giving proper notice, or leave before the end of a fixed-term lease
• You cause damage to the accommodation beyond normal wear and tear
• You leave with unpaid bills
• You leave with rent arrears
The landlord cannot hold your possessions against money you owe, but they can apply to the RTB if they feel that your deposit does not cover rent arrears or the cost of damage to the property.
MAKING A COMPLAINT
If you believe that your landlord is unfairly withholding your deposit, you should request it in writing. If your landlord claims that there are bills/ rent outstanding or damage to the property you should request proof. If you cannot reach agreement/secure the return of your deposit you can make a complaint to the RTB and opt for mediation or adjudication on the issue. Mediation is free. Adjudication costs €15 if you apply online and €25 if submitting a paper application.

Sunak is the new British Prime Minister
Rishi Sunak, who took office on Tuesday morning this week, is the country’s fifth leader since the Brexit vote in June 2016.
All four of his predecessors were forced to resign for one reason or another connected with Brexit.
Liz Truss became the shortest serving UK Prime Minister in history - serving just 44 days before being ousted after some questionable economic decisions.
In his first speech in Downing Street, London, this week the new leader of the Conservative Party laid the blame at Truss.
“I want to pay tribute to my predecessor Liz Truss, she was not wrong to want to improve growth in this country, it is a noble aim," Sunak, the youngest British Prime Minister since the 19th century, said.
“And I admired her restlessness to create change, but some
mistakes were made. Not borne of ill will or bad intentions, quite the opposite, in fact. But mistakes nonetheless. And I have been elected as leader of my party, and your Prime Minister, in part, to fix them. And that work begins immediately. I will place economic stability and confidence at the heart of this Government’s agenda.”
Sunak was born on May 12, 1980 at Southampton General Hospital in Hampshire, to parents of Indian descent who migrated to Britain from East Africa in the 1960s.
He served as Chancellor of the Exchequer from 2020 to 2022 and Chief Secretary to the Treasury from 2019 to 2020. He has been a Member of Parliament (MP) for Richmond (Yorks) since 2015.
New road scheme at Castlecove officially opened
The N70 Brackaharagh Road Project was officially opened (yesterday) Thursday evening by the Minister of State at the Department of Transport, Hildegarde Naughton TD.
The project comprises of the improvement of approximately 1.3km of the N70 road between Castlecove and
Caherdaniel and is located on the Ring of Kerry and Wild Atlantic Way tourist routes.
The improvement works included the introduction of a new single carriageway as well as Active Travel facilities in the form of a segregated two-way pedestrian cycling facility.
This €6m project, fully funded by Transport Infrastructure Ireland, opened to
traffic in July, ahead of schedule, and was constructed by Sorensen Civil Engineering Limited.
"This is a very important improvement of this section of the busy N70 road, and I wish to acknowledge the support of Transport Infrastructure Ireland," Mayor of Kerry, Cllr John Francis Flynn, said. "We look forward to similar improvements on further sections of the Ring of Kerry road in the years ahead."
Minister Naughton is in Kerry for a number of official engagements including, this morning (Friday), the opening of the new Tralee-Fenit and Listowel-Abbeyfeale greenways which form part of
Time to crown America's next top mullet
They say your hair is your crowning glory and that's the case in America as they announced America's next top mullet!
The USA Mullet Championships has become a major competition and the winner was named as Scott Salvadore of Stillwater, NY this week.
Scott took the lead in the 'Mane Event' referring to his mullet as 'The Lord's Drapes' which he has been growing and maintaining for the past four and a half years.
He was one of 25 finalists vying for the glorious title and a $2,500 prize.
The USA Mullet Championships calls itself the nation's official mullet-ranking authority. It started in 2020 as the Michigan Mudflap Contest, before expanding to be a national event with multiple divisions.
There was also a child Mullet Championship final. This year's winner was 8-yearold Emmitt Bailey from Menomonie, Wisconsin, who is also known as 'Mullet Boy'. Last year's winner Clint Duncan won with over 17,000 votes.
The organization also says half of entry fees are donated to the group Stop Soldier Suicide, which provides care for veterans in need.
the Kingdom of Kerry Greenways network.
The decision on the name of the greenways follows a stakeholder survey in relation to the two north Kerry projects which was undertaken by Kerry County Council, Fáilte Ireland and local community and business representatives.
“The naming process was undertaken in conjunction with Fáilte Ireland. The aim of the process was to select a name for the Kerry Greenways that is distinctive, appealing, and attractive to a local, domestic and international audience,” said Niamh O’Sullivan, Head of Kerry County Council’s Tourism Unit.

Sky Sports ends live GAA coverage deal
Sky Sports will no-longer show live GAA inter-county matches as the British broadcaster has ended its nine-year deal with Croke Park.
"Despite our participation in the broadcast rights bidding process, lengthy negotiations and a strong willingness on both sides to continue our partnership, Sky and the GAA have been unable to reach a renewal agreement," said Sky Ireland CEO, JD Buckley.
"A factor in this decision has been the new shortened GAA season and its knock-on impact on the number of games Sky Sports wanted to broadcast." Meanwhile RTÉ has announced an expanded programme of live events, including GAA Championship coverage across its television, radio, and online services for the next five seasons, guaranteeing quality free-to-air coverage to audiences in Ireland across 12 months of the year from 2023 to 2027 inclusive. RTÉ will show 31 championship games across the island of Ireland on RTÉ television and RTÉ Player, as well as the
Joe McDonagh cup final, both Tailteann cup semi-finals and final for the next five years.
Increased free-to-air Allianz National League games as well as continued coverage of the AIB Club Championships will feature on Saturday nights, ensuring year-round live GAA coverage across all platforms.
“With more live games now available than ever before on RTÉ combined with extensive radio, digital and highlights rights, this agreement with the GAA represents an enormous step forward in coverage for our national games,” said RTÉ Head of Sport, Declan McBennett.
Public service broadcasters are at the very heart of the coverage, and this is ultimately for the benefit of the audience. We view this as a hugely significant deal and a core part of our ongoing effort to bring live sport direct to our audience."
The Sunday Game night-time show will return alongside a new second highlights programme. Additionally, RTÉ has secured enhanced digital in-game and post-match digital highlight clip rights.
The search is on for Ireland’s ‘spookiest’ county
This Samhain, the National Museum of Ireland is inviting people across County Kerry to share and help preserve ghost stories that have been passed down through oral tradition in their locality.
The Irish Community Archive Network (iCAN), a Museum initiative that supports communities to collect and share their local history and heritage online, has launched a new project called ‘Ghost Stories of Ireland – Seeking Tales of the Unexplained’.
“Ghost stories and encounters with otherworldly beings are a common theme in Irish folklore,” explained Lorna Elms, iCAN Development Officer, “so this Hallowe’en we are inviting the public to help us document those stories that continue to be told and to help us find out which county in Ireland is the spookiest! Stories passed down through oral tradition give us a greater understanding of how our ancestors’ perceived and explained the world around them, which is why the Irish Folklore Commission was set up in 1935 to collect and study the folklore
and traditions of Ireland. Much of this work continues to be carried out by local volunteer history and heritage groups, such as those supported by the iCAN initiative.”
The project also wants to revisit the ghost stories gathered by schoolchildren for the Irish Folklore Commission in the 1930s. The Commission prepared a guidance booklet that listed 55 subject headings – topics that the children could explore with older people in the community.
Visit ouririshheritage.org to learn more
about the ‘Ghost Stories of Ireland’ project; submit a ghost story of your own; or choose your favourite story from the National Folklore Collection and tell the Museum why you like it.
Through iCAN, the National Museum works in partnership with the Local Authority Heritage Officers to support communities as they document their own history, heritage and culture on digital platforms. This initiative is supported by the Heritage Council.

Fire service urge caution for Hallowe'en
| By Sean Moriarty
Killarney Fire Service is wishing everyone a safe and fun Hallowe'en - but urged caution when it comes to bonfires and candles.
Thousand will mark the year's most scary date on Monday night but with fun comes an element of danger.
Local fire officer Martin O’Grady has issued a list of precautions families can take to ensure everyone has a safe and enjoyable time.
They include the use of battery candles where possible.
“If you use a real candle, use with extreme caution. Make sure children are watched at all times when candles are lit,” he said.
“Be sure to place candle-lit pumpkins well away from anything that can burn and far enough out of the way of trick-or-treaters, doorsteps, or walkways.”
Bonfires are another traditional element to festivities and not having a bonfire is
“like not having turkey with your Christmas dinner”, he added.
“Don’t attend unsupervised bonfires,” he added. “Stay well back from bonfires as they are unstable and collapse as they burn. Don’t use accelerants to start bonfires such as petrol or diesel.”
Trick or treaters should be aware of their surroundings as many costumes are dark or black.
“In poorly lit areas be sure to be safe and be seen and use flash lights,” he said.
“Happy Hallowe'en from all at Kerry Fire and Rescue Service.”
FIREWORKS
There has been a separate warning about fireworks after a wayward fire cracker found its way on to a Killarney Celtic training pitch after being launched from a nearby estate earlier this week.
“Luckily no one was injured,” club vice chair Paul Sherry said.
Be mindful of pets, dogs and cats can get spooked by fireworks.

Wendell & Wild
Dropping on Netflix today (Friday) is stop-motion animated fantasy Wendell & Wild.
From the delightfully wicked minds of Henry Selick and Jordan Peele, comes Wendell & Wild, an animated tale about scheming demon brothers Wendell (Keegan-Michael Key) and Wild (Peele) - who enlist the aid of Kat Elliot - a tough teen with a load of guilt - to summon them to the Land of the Living. But what Kat demands in return leads to a brilliantly bizarre and comedic adventure like no other,
an animated fantasy that defies the law of life and death, all told through the handmade artistry of stop motion. The horror comedy film is directed by Henry Selick from a screenplay written by Selick and Jordan Peele (who also serve as producers), based on Selick and Clay McLeod Chapman's unpublished book of the same name. It had its world premiere at the 47th Toronto International Film Festival on September 11 and was released in select cinemas on October 21 before its streaming release on Netflix.

JyellowL 'Yup Yup Yup'
JYellowL returns with a brand-new single ‘Yup Yup Yup’ which is out now. The single follows the release of his hit tracks ‘See Me Finish’ and ‘Appetiser’ with now Love Island star Antigoni. “This song is THE most important song in the JyellowL ecosystem to date," speaking about the release JYellowL said.
"It's the song that bridges all the gaps in my musical and cultural identity. The
title and recurring phrase in the track 'Yup Yup Yup' is a nod to my Dublin upbringing. It's a phrase that's used as a response to everything with Dubliners and similarly in the track, it's used as a response to a variety of calls. In the lyrics, I'm adding my Nigerian/Jamaican flavour to my black-Irish swagger. I mix in pidgin and patois with typical Dublin slang which makes the song a melting pot of various cultural influx.”

Emotional scenes as Nagle calls time on his World Rally career
Irish rally driver Craig Breen paid tribute to his co-driver Paul Nagle who has retired from the sport.
| By Sean Moriarty
The Killarney man has called time on his 18-year World Championship career –five wins and 18 podium finishes are just some of the highlights – in last weekend’s Rally de Catalunya.
It was his 102nd start in the World Rally Championship after making his debut in the same event in 2004.
Cavan man James Fulton will replace Nagle from next month’s Rally Japan onwards but he will travel to the event to complete the handover.
“It’s very strange and still doesn’t feel quite real. It won’t feel real until Japan and I suddenly have a different voice in my ears. It’s been fantastic apart from everything on the sporting side and all the results and all the rallies and what
not,” said Breen.
“Just the craic… Irish humour is a very special and unique kind of humour and, when you find your partner in crime who operated on the same level, then you know it just ends up as a barrel of laughs.
All the events, all the travelling and the time you spend together, it’s been the most amazing time together.”
While Nagle’s World Championship ca-
reer has drawn to a close Waterford man Breen promised that the pair would work together again on “extra-curricular rallies”.
“It will definitely not be the last time we are in a car together. I have so many extra-curricular rallies that I squeeze in here, there and everywhere. He doesn’t have a choice in the matter. I’m looking forward to them,” added Breen. A large group of Kerry fans, including Paul’s wife Cathy and their two sons Fitz and Leon, were at the rally finish near Salou on Sunday afternoon to greet Nagle as he crossed the finish line of the World
Rally Championship event as a professional co-driver for the final time. Also present was his Agahdoe neighbour Donie O’Sullivan who gave Paul his WRC debut in 2004.
“It's been an incredible journey. I came into this sport as a young lad and I followed the dream. I have five wins and I leave as a husband and a father with so many memories. This man beside me [Breen] has been like a brother to mehe's brought me so much success. I also have to mention Kris Meeke - without these men I'd be nowhere, so thank you,” said an emotional Nagle at the finish line.

SIMPLY BEAUTIFUL
Beauty - By Jill O'Donoghue
How to have healthy glowing skin in winter
It's difficult to accomplish dewy, hydrated, glowing skin in winter with the cold winter working against us; dry air, wind stripping your skin of moisture and artificial heat from your heater.
Cold feet especially make you feel miserable. It's a great idea to have warm water foot soaks once a week for healthy feet and crack free heels all year round. A regular foot soak makes it easy to keep hard skin under control. Mix a small amount of soap and Epsom salts for an anti-inflammatory effect on the bones of the feet and relaxation for the muscles. Warm feet equals a warm body. Always wear slippers around the house, this is a great way to care for your feet. Staying active during winter months will help your body temperature, boost circulation, keep your pulse rate up and your glow intact. After exercise your brain releases the feel-good chemicals serotonin and dopamine which will help to reduce anxiety while boosting well-being and the glow in your skin. Use a humidifier because during winter the air inside can be super dry especially while sleeping or anyone working from home. Adding a humidifier to your bedroom can put moisture back into the air, helping the skin's moisture and you'll
wake up with glowing skin every morning. As always, all year round drink water because it will hydrate you from the inside out. If you are finding your skin particularly dry this season, a super moisturiser and
with help nourish it more efficiently.

New book documents 275 years of time
A road trip through the past best describes a new book hot off the press.
‘Once Upon a Road’ was written by Lyreacrompane native, Joe Harrington, and its 364 full colour pages and 315 images, maps and photos carry an account of the very first Butter Road from Kerry to the Cork Butter Market. Joe describes the book, which took five years to compile, as a “search for the olden days on a 60-mile journey through 275 years of time.”
The subject of the book is the road from just south of Listowel through Castleisland, Millstreet and Vicarstown, to Kerry Pike outside Cork City with a spur from Shinnagh Cross near Rathmore to Killarney. Joe discloses that it was built under a 1747 Act of Parliament by a Castleisland man, John Murphy, who had the right, for 61 years, to place six toll gates at different points on the turnpike road. The passage of the Act through the Parliament was funded by Killarney based Viscount Kenmare.
The story of the road first appeared a couple of years ago in a song by Joe
entitled ‘The Road John Murphy Made’ which won the Sean McCarthy Ballad Competition.
“The ballad was about one man’s trip on the road in the 1750s and the book broadens the story,” Joe explained.
"Every mile on ‘The Road John Murphy Made’ tells its own tale and along the way we will meet Whiteboys and Hedge Schoolmasters, Freedom Fighters and Moonlighters, Famines and Natural Disasters, Mass Rocks and Wedge Tombs, Bronze age hoards and Bog Butter, Lost Estates and Evicted Tenants – and the part played by the road in the slave trade.”
‘Once Upon a Road’ dips into the local history of the townlands, towns, villages, and settlements through which the road passes including a detailed account of the Whiteboy uprising between Killarney and Millstreet in 1822 – the 200th anniversary of which was remembered at Shinnagh Cross with a wreath laying ceremony earlier this year.
The book is widely available including at The Dungeon Bookshop in Killarney and directly from Joe on 087 2853570.

Guaranteed losses
30% market declines should be met with open arms and viewed as buying opportunities.
Where we go wrong is our tendency to extrapolate this current environment out into the future, assuming it will last forever.
During the good times, we get caught up in the euphoria. We think things will last forever, and we find ways to rationalise even the most ludicrous narratives. Lest we forget, people were finding seemingly justifiable reasons to pay millions of dollars for pictures of cartoon rocks less than a year ago.
This tendency to extrapolate works both ways. It's easy to get caught up in the downward spiral of bad news and buy into the doomsday scenarios.
The imminent collapse of Fiat Currency, World War 3 and a Global Debt Crisis all become seemingly guaranteed outcomes when outlooks turn negative. But nothing lasts forever, and the current environment we are in will not be the exception to the rule. This too shall pass. While it may seem inevitable when you are stuck in the echo chamber of endless

bad news, in reality, it is far less likely to lead to an apocalypse than the doomsday preacher would like you to believe.
SO, WHERE DOES THAT LEAVE INVESTORS?
You're looking in the wrong direction. No need to regurgitate the negative news. It's everywhere. This symphony of pessimism has led to considerable market stress, with stock and bond indexes down over 20% YTD.
But that is what has already happened. You get no special prize for regaling what is currently happening or what has happened in the past.
The stock market is a forward-looking machine, so you must align your focus accordingly. As markets fall, you should ask yourself, what does all this mean for the future? How will things look one, three, or five years down the road?
As prices fall, fear increases but so too does the future expected return. Present-day turmoil creates future opportunities. For those not of retirement age,

INVESTING IS STILL TOO RISKY Banks are boasting 0% deposit rates while inflation hits double figures. The price of everything around you skyrockets while the absolute value of your money stays the same.
Times have changed. Your money isn't 'safe' in the bank, you are simply locking in guaranteed losses. You need to be proactive. Doing nothing with your money is no longer an option. If you want to maintain your current wealth, it needs to be tied to assets that generate positive returns over time.
This isn't about taking maximum risk of finding the optimal investment that will make you rich overnight. You simply need to realise that you are willingly losing your hard-earned money by doing nothing. Recent market activity has created opportunities for even the most risk-averse investor. As a result of the rise in interest rates, there are risk free investments now offering between 4% and 6% annual. These are far from the most

lucrative assets, but they are a significant improvement from the 0% you are getting from the bank without any increase in credit risk.
If the potential to lose money is the thing preventing you from investing in the stock market, please realise that you are already making guaranteed losses as the value of your money erodes in the bank. We knew that morning That God was going to call your name In life we loved you dearly In death we do the same
It broke our hearts to lose you You did not go alone For part of us went with you The day God called you home

I wish to be with you in Eternal Glory. Thank you for mercy towards me and mine. This prayer must be said for three days, after three days the favour will be granted.
F.M.
God looked around his Garden And saw an empty space
He then looked down upon the earth and saw your tired face He put his arms around you and lifted you to rest Gods garden must be beautiful He only takes the best
God knew you were in pain and a cure was not to be So he closed your weary eyelids and whispered come to me
With tearful eyes we watched you and saw you slip away Although we loved you dearly we knew you could not stay

I gave to you my love you can only guess How much you gave me in happiness I thank you for the love you each have shown But now it’s time I travelled on alone.
So grieve a while for me If grieve you must Then let your grief be comforted by trust It’s only for a time that we must part Bless the memories within your heart.

The beauty of a memory Is That it’s always there
a penny in your pocket You can take it anywhere
And when your heart is heavy And your eyes ar filled with tears
can focus on a memory And travel through the years
Your heart can visit happy times When laughter filled the air And the presence of your loved one Will lessen your despair
So, as you travel on in life Take comfort as you go In a lifetime of ‘sweet memories’
one who loved you so!
Anniversary Mass for Paddy and his brother Fr. Denis is on Sunday 30th October at 11:00am in the Church of the Resurrection.

All-Star awards for magnificent seven
All-Ireland champions Kerry dominate 2022 Team of the Year
Seven members of the Kerry senior football team will be picking up prestigious awards in Dublin tonight (Friday) following the official announcement of the 2022 PwC All-Star Football team.
After their heroic performances that helped Kerry to a long-awaited All-Ireland title in July, the following players have been acknowledged: goalkeeper Shane Ryan, defenders Jason Foley, Tadhg Morley and Gavin White, and for-
wards Paudie Clifford, Seán O'Shea and David Clifford.
The younger Clifford will be collecting his fourth All-Star award in five years at this level. The Fossa native will also be hoping to take home the coveted Footballer of the Year prize, although he is facing stiff competition in the form of Galway pair Shane Walsh and Cillian McDaid.
Older brother Paudie has earned his second All-Star in just his third year with
Kerry, and semi-final hero Seán O'Shea of Kenmare is also picking up his second award.
Rathmore man Shane Ryan, Jason Foley of Ballydonoghue, Tadhg Morley of Templenoe and Gavin White of Dr Crokes are first-time winners.
Remarkably, Morley's award brings Templenoe's overall tally to 14, making them the fifth most successful club in the country in terms of football All-Stars.
White, who made an unexpected return for the All-Ireland final having picked up a bad injury against Dublin in the semi, joins Connie Murphy and Colm Cooper as Dr Crokes players who have won the award.
The 2022 team is comprised of seven players from Kerry, five from runners-up Galway, two from Derry and one from Dublin.

Can Mid Kerry get that bit of luck they need?
There are two ways of looking at East Kerry’s form coming into Sunday’s county final.
A: They haven’t realised their enormous potential yet but they’re still winning.
It’s only a matter of time before they beat someone out the gate.
B: They’ve been riding their luck in close games. It’s only matter of time before they get caught.
What’s it going to be? Well, if I knew the answer to that with any degree of certainty I’d be a wealthy man come Monday morning (although I’d have to wager something substantial to make money off East Kerry at 1/5).
Jerry O’Sullivan’s star-studded side have reached the final without really catching fire. Teams are naturally digging in against them which isn’t conducive to the free-flowing football we might expect from the likes of Paudie Clifford, David Clifford and James O’Donoghue, to name but a few.
The problem for opponents is that even if they do manage to slow down East Kerry’s attackers and force them back out the pitch, they’re still not safe. With a string of top-class shooters who can point from anywhere with little to no build-up play, East Kerry always hold the upper hand when push comes to shove.
Be it David Clifford or Darragh Roche or Paul O’Shea or even Paul Murphy, as was the case against Dingle, they have players who are capable of kicking them to victory.
But there’s no denying that they have been fortunate enough at various junctures in this year’s competition. Spa
squandered a glorious opportunity to at least earn a draw in the group phase, and Kenmare hit the post right at the death in the quarter-final. East Kerry’s victory over Dingle in the semi-final was perhaps more down to the quality of their late kicking than anything else, but Dingle will still be kicking themselves over their inability to hold possession –especially when they had a man advantage in the last quarter.
You make your own luck and they do, of course, deserve credit for getting the job done, but they have certainly been living on the edge.
As for their opposition in this year’s decider, I was really impressed by Mid Kerry in their semi-final victory over Feale Rangers. Keith Evans, Liam Carey and Éanna O’Connor are moving well up front, ably assisted by the likes of Darren Houlihan and Mike Breen behind them. They were strong at the back too where their efforts are perhaps typified by Pa Kilkenny, the former Kerry panellist who always makes a nuisance of himself.
Two finals in three years is good going and against any normal team they would have a great chance in the final. East Kerry aren’t really a normal team, though, and Mid Kerry supporters will head to Austin Stack Park knowing that their chances are slim.
Having said that, there is always hope in a one-off game. If they can keep it close and get some luck down the stretch (a key ingredient that has evaded a number of East Kerry’s opponents to date), maybe they can be the ones to finally catch the favourites out.

Final countdown for district rivals
East Kerry and Mid Kerry set for prestigious county final
| By Adam Moynihan
Raging hot favourites East Kerry will be seeking their third county title in four years when they meet Mid Kerry in the final of the County Championship on Sunday.
East Kerry’s squad is stacked with talent and the bad news for their opponents is that they are expected to be at full strength this weekend. The standard “couple of knocks” at this stage of the year should have eased in time for throw-in.
Manager Jerry O’Sullivan has stressed the importance of “hard work” in this season’s competition and he has certainly gotten that, even if one gets the feeling that his players haven’t quite peaked just yet.
That will be worrying for Mid Kerry, but they have been here before. The teams met in the 2020 final and although East Kerry prevailed that day with 12 points to spare (2-15 to 0-9), Peter O’Sullivan will be hoping that his team have learned from the experience.
The men from the middle have won many admirers en route to this year’s final, particularly by defeating the defending champions Austin Stacks in the group phase and the tournament’s surprise package, Feale Rangers, in the semi-final.
Tickets for the county final can be purchased online at universe.com for €20 (students get €5 back at the gate). U16s can attend for free.
For those who can’t make it to Tralee, the match will be televised live on TG4.
Coverage starts at 1.45pm with the Limerick hurling final between Na Piarsaigh and Kilmallock following at 4.15pm.

How to solve Kerry’s club conundrum
placed team.
Austin Stacks’ shock relegation from senior level has reignited the debate around the number of senior clubs in Kerry. Should there be more than eight?
Firstly, if there are to be changes, they should happen at the end of next season. It wouldn't be right to change the rules now just to "save" a big club like Stacks. The system might be harsh but the bottom line is they have been relegated now so they should play intermediate in 2023.
My own club, the Legion, suffered the same fate in 2021. While we all would have been delighted if the County Board swooped in, increased the number of senior clubs and stopped the club from being demoted, it wouldn’t have been right. You can’t redraw the rules of engagement after the fact. Doing so would devalue the whole competition and retroactively render several games, including the relegation playoff itself, meaningless.
There is a strong argument to be made that eight senior clubs isn’t enough, though. With the likes of Legion, Rathmore, Kilcummin and now Stacks finding themselves at the intermediate grade, some observers say that increasing the number to 12 would be better for
the competition.
It would also have the knock-on effect of levelling up the playing field when it comes to Munster and All-Ireland Club Championships at intermediate level and below. Kerry teams are seen to hold an advantage in these tournaments as other counties have more senior clubs.
This means the 9th ranked team in Kerry might be playing the 17th ranked team (or lower) in the Munster Intermediate Club Championship, for example.
If Kerry GAA do decide to mix things up at the end of next season, here's how a new format with 12 senior clubs might work.
The 2023 Senior Club Championship could remain the same as 2022 but with one key difference: no relegation playoff. All eight teams would retain their senior status for 2024.
The 2023 County Championship would be run off the same way it was in 2022.
Then, in 2024, the Senior Club Championship would be comprised of 12 teams: the eight senior teams from 2023 plus the four Intermediate Championship semi-finalists from 2023.
You could have three groups of four with the top team in each group advancing to the semi-finals, along with best second
The problem with having 12 senior clubs is that it brings the total to 20 teams for the County Championship (including the eight divisional teams). A GAA directive states that only 16 teams can compete. The idea of merging Feale Rangers and Shannon Rangers as one North Kerry team has been mooted. If such a move would be agreeable to all parties, it would bring the total number of teams down to 19. But we still have three too many teams for the County Championship.
At this point, qualifying matches could be played to whittle the number of divisional teams down, as has been done in the past. This would be a far bigger cull, though: eight (or seven if Feale Rangers and Shannon Rangers join forces) down to four.
Alternatively, the qualifying rounds could be contested by the teams with the worst records in the previous year's County Championship.
Another option is to limit the amount of senior clubs who enter the County Championship. This would be controversial but it could be done via the Club Championship.
The bottom team from each group in the Club Championship enters the Playoffs along with the worst third placed team. Four teams in total. Two semi-finals. The winners of each semi play in the final
with the winner of that game advancing to that year’s County Championship. Meanwhile, the two beaten semi-finalists contest the relegation playoff. The losers drop down to intermediate for the following season.
The other three teams in the Playoffs retain their senior status, but only the team that wins the final qualifies for the Kerry SFC.
The other senior clubs who avoid the Playoffs also qualify for the County Championship (nine clubs in total).
The 2024 County Championship would then have the same format as 2022 and 2023. 16 teams. Four groups of four.
This format, which is being tried out for the first time this year, has been a success. Generally speaking, the feedback from all camps has been very positive.
These proposed tweaks certainly make things messier than they are currently, granted, but that's what happens when you have 12 teams as opposed to eight or 16.
Ultimately, the question for Kerry GAA is this: is it worth the hassle?
What do you think? Should there be eight senior clubs, or 12, or more?

Gritty Scotts Lakers end Limerick’s winning streak
A determined if imperfect performance by the Scotts Lakers saw them claim the spoils against the Limerick Celtics in Killarney on Saturday night.
The visitors had averaged 103 points in their opening three games of the 2022/23 season but they returned to Limerick having posted their lowest score of the year – and with their perfect record in tatters.
Portuguese captain Rui Saraiva typified the Lakers’ solid defensive showing, something that didn’t go unnoticed by head coach Jarlath Lee.
"Our hustle and defence has been superb this season and I've no doubt that is down to having Rui in there leading it,” Lee told club PRO Enda Walshe. “The whole team has stepped up in that regard and you can see in the likes of Jamie O’Sullivan a huge improvement.” Lee was less enamoured by the team’s second-half display, however.
"Our offence was really good first half but we lost our way in the second. We'll work on that Monday night at training because we have to learn to keep our foot on the gas.
"Ronan Collins is a great player, who can get even better as he continues to
progress with us. Jack Ferguson had a tough night tonight, up against a good American in Reynolds and also being double-teamed, but he got through a huge amount of work for us. He's a great lad."
American import Ferguson hailed the contribution of the St Paul’s faithful, who came out in numbers to support the team.
"The supporters can be the difference between a win and a loss in games like that. The crowd were amazing and we cannot thank them enough. Rui , Mark O’Shea and Ronan made winning plays toward the end of the game and that propelled us to a victory. It shows who we are as a team and the character we have.
“We are slowly but surely figuring out our identity as a basketball team.”
Next up for the Lakers is another home game against Fr Mathews of Cork on Sunday at 3pm.
LAKERS: Jack Fergsuon (24), Ronan Collins (17), Aron Walker (15), Rui Saraiva (8), Jack O’Sullivan (3), Jamie O’Sullivan (3), Mark O’Shea (2), Senan O’Leary (1), Marko Bencic, Eoin O’Carroll, Oisin Spring, Jamie Cooke.

Two-time heavyweight champion of the world Tyson Fury has recorded a version of the Neil Diamond classic Sweet Caroline with a view to raising funds for the men’s mental health charity Talk Club. The English boxer is known to belt out a tune or two both pre-and-post-fight; he previously turned heads with his renditions of American Pie, Walking in Memphis and I Don’t Wanna Miss A Thing.
Sweet Caroline has become a firm favourite with English sports fans in recent years and the chorus is regularly heard at football games. Fury’s cover will be released on November 11, just in time for the World Cup in Qatar, which gets underway on November 20. The 34-year-old is currently preparing for his upcoming fight against Derek Chisora on December 3.

| Jilted Umbro suppliers may take FAI to court
The company that has supplied Ireland’s football kits for 28 years is taking legal action after the FAI unexpectedly terminated their contract.
In a statement, JACC Sports Distributors, who have provided Ireland with Umbro kits since 1994, described the decision as “highly irregular and unwarranted”. They went on to express their dismay that “the Association’s longest standing, most loyal sponsor, and the sponsor which has contributed more financially than any other sponsor to the association would be treated this way”.
The FAI will need to find a new kit supplier before next month’s friendly internationals – if they haven’t done so already. Judging by the reaction online, many supporters are hoping for the return of adidas. The German sportswear giants provided Ireland’s gear from 1986 to 1994, a golden era for the Irish football team.

Moloney wins derby for Blues
Killarney Athletic secured a memorable 3-2 victory over reigning champions Killarney Celtic on Sunday as a late Brendan Moloney strike ensured that all three points remained in Woodlawn.
Celtic took the lead after just seven minutes through Matej Vrljicak but the hosts equalised 10 minutes later when Roko Rujevcan made the most of Moloney’s cross with a neat backheel finish. The Celts quickly re-established their advantage when Trpimir Vrljicak pounced on a rebound and the league’s kingpins retired for half-time leading by two goals to one.
Athletic stuck to their task, however,
and they were rewarded with an equaliser on the hour-mark; Pedja Glumcevic nodding home to set up a ding-dong battle down the stretch.
The game appeared to be heading for a draw as the clock ticked into injury time but Athletic’s ex-professional, Brendan Moloney, took the ball down on his chest and fired an unstoppable shot straight into the top corner.
The result brings to an end Celtic’s remarkable unbeaten league run that stretched all the way back to the season before last.
For their part, Stuart Templeman and his Athletic charges will be hoping that this early-season upset kickstarts another title charge.

MINOR BOYS: A late surge saw our U17 Boys eventually get the better of Fossa under the Monday night Direen lights. This East Kerry Division 3 semi final saw the home team start the better, leading 1-3 to 0-4 at the end of the opening quarter. It was then Fossas turn to dominate as they limited the Legion attack to just two points for the remainder of the half and they hit productive 1-5 themselves to leave the score at 1-9 to 1-6 at half time. The second half started as the first half finished with Fossa in control as they now lead by 1-12 to 1-8 with fifteen minutes remaining. The final quarter was a score fest though as Legion ran in three goals to brush aside a gallant Fossa. Final score Killarney 4-10 Fossa 1-15. They now play Firies in the final this Saturday, October 29 at
3pm with the venue to be confirmed at time of writing. SATURDAY MORNING ACADEMY: Our Academy wound up for the year last Saturday in spring-like conditions. It also marked the end of the road for some of our older age groups who now graduate further up the Juvenile ranks. We welcomed our neighbours Dr Crokes to Direen and some enjoyable games took place. The biggest cheer of the morning was reserved for the arrival of the ice cream truck and that particular treat went down very well. Many thanks to all the coaches who helped out during the year and we'll see ye all again in 2023.
