A Turkish man living in Killarney is urgently appealing for help following multiple earthquakes in his home country this week which has left over 19,000 dead.
| By Michelle Crean
Monday's devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake ripped through Turkey and Syria leaving thousands of people without shelter or food, and with just the clothes on their backs.
It's the biggest earthquake Turkey has experienced in over 200 years with 10 cities affected, according to well known Turkish barber Michael Kaya, who is urgently appealing to Killarney locals to donate what they can to help the people in his home country.
At least 6,400 buildings were destroyed in Turkey and approximately 30 percent of the area has been completely destroyed with the remaining 70% damaged. People desperate for food and basic goods have been forced to loot supermarkets as they await aid. Babies have been found alone in the city of Kahramanmaras and brought to hospital for treatment.
Michael, who is from Kuşadası, has been living in Killarney for 19 years and runs Michael's Barbers on High Street which is a busy and popular spot.
Upon hearing the news of the devastation to hit his country he put a call out for donations and has been overwhelmed by the response so far.

Urgent appeal as earthquake death toll reaches over 19k
"As a person from my home country I want to do my duty to help," Michael told the Killarney Advertiser.
"We had an earthquake in the early 2000s so I know what it feels like, the desperation especially in the cold winter. We want to give them a bit of hope. Irish people are very fair, I see that the last few years for the people of Ukraine."
He says he plans to drive to the embassy to drop off the goods.
"If anybody would like to donate any of the goods you can drop them into my shop 20 High Street, Killarney."
A second collection is being organised by Mary O'Leary.
She's calling on people to consider picking up similar items when shopping over the coming days.
It's currently winter in Turkey with temperatures hitting minus four degrees. He says people urgently needs hats, gloves, scarves, coats and shoes for all ages, blankets as well as nappies, baby food and hygiene products.
He plans to transport the goods to the Turkish Embassy in Dublin and they will then arrange for them to be transported to aid agencies.
He says he knows of people close to his family members who have died. Ergin Kuccuk who has lived in Tralee for two decades and currently works in The Rose Hotel lost both his parents this week. They had survived the initial earthquake and he spoke to them on the phone but they died soon after when another earthquake struck while they were inside their home.
She will be available on Monday evening at 7pm in the Cathedral car park, Killarney where people can drop the items off.
"I will park at the edge of the cathedral car park and will have my boot open so that people can easily drive by and drop off items that they want to donate," she told the Killarney Advertiser. "The items will be sent to the Dublin embassy on Tuesday so I will not be collecting any items after that."
Mystery of 1949 medal found in Killarney car park
| By Sean Moriarty
A Lough Guitane man is hoping to re-unite a 1949 All-Ireland Athletics medal with the family of its rightful owner who could be a former Irish Olympian.
Pat F O’Donoghue found the medal in a Killarney car park over 20 years ago. At the time he put the medal in his jeep for safe keeping and forgot all about it. It only resurfaced recently when Pat changed cars and the medal was found in the pocket of the jeep when he cleaned it out before trading it in. The story took an unexpected twist when his daughter was home from America on a holiday just after Christmas.
She decided to research the details 'Youth 1949 Mile Winner' which was in-
scribed on the medal and it led them to believe that the medal was won by John Joe Barry from Tipperary.
“Orla’s research shows that there was only one Youth Mile Race in 1949 and it was won by John Joe,” Pat told the Killarney Advertiser.
“What I want I know is how in the name of God did this man’s medal end up in a car park in Killarney."
John Joe Barry (October 5 1925 – December 9 1994) was an Irish middle-distance runner. He competed in the men's 1,500 metres at the 1948 Summer Olympics in London. He finished eighth in the first-round heat of the 1,500 metres, and failed to complete his 5,000 metres race after suffering a stitch. This was the first Olympic Games in 12 years after disruption caused by World War 2.
Barry was born in Illinois but his mother
brought the family home to Tipperary after she inherited the family farm.
He had a distinguished career as an athlete which included holding Irish, English, Scottish and American national titles at the one time in 1950.
On August 9, 1947 Barry set the Irish mile record, breaking the record set by Tommy Conneff in 1895, which was a world record at the time.
In 1950 he became the third Irish athlete – and the first middle-distance runner –to go on an athletics scholarship to the US at Villanova University.
Upon graduation he spent most of his business career in the United States, but retired to Dublin where he died in 1994.
Pat is hoping to get the medal back to a family member. He can be contacted via the Killarney Advertiser office on info@ killarneyadvertiser.ie.

Up to one thousand opportunities at Killarney jobs fair
Following on from the tremendous success of last year’s South Kerry Jobs Fair, plans are at an advanced stage for this year’s event.
It will take place on March 2 at the Great Southern Killarney.
More than eight hundred people attended the event last year while there were 50 exhibitors with almost one thousand jobs available.
The event is being jointly organised by South Kerry Development Partnership in conjunction with the Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce.
“To date many of last year’s exhibitors have indicated they will again attend the event and there are also enquiries from other companies and organisations with positions available,” Joanne Griffin from SKDP’s Enterprise Office said.
“We expect there will be a strong interest in the event from many of those who have recently taken up residence in the county and we will be working to facilitate them to attend the event.”
Jobs will be available in all sectors she noted, pointing out that in addition to the hotel sector, last year’s event featured companies from the engineering, finance, retail and marketing sectors. The fair was launched at the Great South-
Park fire plan in place to prevent future devastation
Plans have been put in place to avoid a repeat of the devastating fire that destroyed a large section of Killarney National Park in 2021, park bosses have confirmed.
The fire in April of that year wiped out 2,500 hectares over a three-day period and it destroyed habitat in what is a UNESCO biosphere reserve.
Delivering the keynote address at the Annual General Meeting of Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce, the regional manager of the NPWS southern division, Eamonn Meskell told delegates that an action plan has since been put in place.
A review of the damage caused in 2021 is ongoing to determine if the damaged habitat is capable of restoring itself and
to ensure all the correct measures are being taken.
Mr Meskell said the NPWS has purchased vehicles fitted with water pumps and they are on site 12 months of the year. A fire team has also been set up within the park and the staff will be fully trained and kitted out with a specialist UK company engaged to conduct the training. A helicopter is on retention and, in the event of another fire, it will have Bambi buckets attached to drop on to the affected area.
“We are liaising with four international groups to see the best way to do it,” said Mr Meskell, who added that a fire plan with detailed maps and the required information has also been prepared. "This is an attempt to address the matter and I think we have done it the right way.”
ern Killarney on Tuesday morning. It marked one of the first public engagements for newly appointed Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce chief executive Bridget O’Keeffe.
“Having joined the Killarney Chamber of Tourism & Commerce as Senior Executive in the last week I can see the tremendous value this will bring to South Kerry. Hosting the event early this year gives exhibitors an even greater opportunity to find the right candidates for roles within their organisations earlier in the season. Jobs will be available in all sectors which will help support the wider community,” she said.
Killarney based companies already confirmed for the fair include Red Chair Recruitment, the Great Southern Killarney and Hayfield Collection of hotels, which includes the Royal Hotel.
Potential employees are advised to bring an up-to-date CV with them.
Further information on the event can be obtained by contacting Joanne by email at jgriffin@skdp.net or 087 6152660.
Muckross House most popular tourist site in county
Over 500,000 people visited Muckross House in 2020 and 2021 - making it the most popular tourist attraction in the county in that time.
Fáilte Ireland published the results of its Annual Visitors Attractions Survey this week.
The figures are for the combined periods of 2020 and 2021, during the height of the pandemic. Visitor numbers were greatly reduced during this time but the Killarney attraction, which is largely outdoors, proved to be very busy.
Derrynane House and Gardens in South Kerry was the second most visited site, attracting 355,622 in that time frame while Tralee Wetlands had 329,000 people through its doors.

Great turnout at Kerry Clubs Fair
Over 600 people attended the Kerry Clubs Fair at Killarney Racecourse on Sunday to see exhibitions by a wide variety of clubs and voluntary organisations.
The event, which set out to highlight volunteering opportunities and new activities everyone can participate in, was organised by Killarney Lions Club and sponsored by Killarney Credit Union.
“This was the third Kerry Clubs Fair and
once again the turnout was fantastic,” said Killarney Lions Club President, Denis Doolan.
“The feedback from all who attended was very positive, which is thanks to the great effort put in by clubs and organisa-
tions like Kerry Local Link, Killarney Valley Classic and Vintage Club, Kerry Stars Special Olympics Club, Camp Drama Group and many, many more. We are very grateful to all who took part.”

Plans for parade to be "the best the town has ever seen"
| By Sean Moriarty
This year’s St Patrick’s Day Parade in Killarney will celebrate all that is good about the town.
The organisers, Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce, have announced initial details of the March 17 celebration.
The parade’s theme will tie in with a new marketing programme which is being developed by Fáilte Ireland in conjunction with Kerry County Council, National Parks and Wildlife Services, Office of Public Works, Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce, Kerry Branch of the Irish Hotels Federation and multiple other Killarney stakeholders.
The development of the marketing programme includes the unveiling of a new Killarney logo which carries the strapline
‘Experience More’.
This is part of a five-year plan called the 'Killarney Destination Experience Development Plan'.
To promote this new campaign, businesses, community groups and sports clubs are invited to take part in the annual St Patrick’s Day Parade.
“The new brand has been developed with Fáilte Ireland in conjunction with Kerry County Council and multiple other Killarney stakeholders who have a shared vision to make Killarney a best in class tourist destination,” said St Patrick’s Festival voluntary chairman Paul Sherry.
“We want to make this St Patrick’s Day
were there showcasing all that is good about communities and also the importance of being involved and volunteering.”
The Killarney Lions club through its members, assists various groups and individuals in and around the community. Lions do this through voluntary activities, fundraising and by holding various types of events in support of a great many local causes.
parade the best the town has ever seen and we invite the people to dazzle us with their imagination and interpretation of the theme.
“As always, we ask them to make it visual, make it noisy, create a performance but most of all, have fun as it is our intention to paint the town green and we look forward to everybody joining the party.”

New faces at the helm of Killarney Chamber
Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce has appointed a new senior executive to oversee the day-to-day running of the business organisation.
The chamber announced Bridget O’Keeffe, a native of Newmarket, Co Cork and a Killarney resident, as its new chief at its Annual General Meeting on Friday. She will work closely with events manager Katy Jacobi and the Chamber executive.
This is a new departure for the Chamber but follows other similar moves by commercial bodies across the country.
Friday’s AGM marked Niall Kelleher’s last official engagement as Chamber president.
He will be replaced by hotelier Pádraig Treacy and restaurateur Johnny McGuire who will share the role.
“We have one chance to get this new governance and development plan right at the first opportunity, but we must show a little patience along the way and we must do it properly by making an effort every day of the week,” Mr Kelleher said in his
It's a gold medal for the Aghadoe Heights Hotel
The Aghadoe Hotel has been named 'Gold Medal Award Winner ~ Ireland's Front of House Team'.
Winning the Virgin Media Gold Medal Award is "always" a "very special moment", Siobhan O'Shea from the Aghadoe Hotel told the Killarney Advertiser.
"We were honoured and delighted to represent the entire team and accept this award on their behalf and to be recognised as Ireland's Best Front of House
Team is an exceptional achievement," she said. "We are incredibly proud of our amazing team whose natural desire to look after our wonderful guests is recognised and rewarded."
The Gold Medal Awards are considered the leading awards for the Irish hospitality, by experts who recognise and reward the highest standards of professionalism and excellent level of service being delivered in our tourism industry, she added.
outgoing speech.
“Bringing the Chamber to exactly where the members want it to be will take time. It will take perseverance and it will take hard work, but that work will have to be done – it will be done and we will get there one step at a time.”
GOING FORWARD
Bridget O’Keeffe, who formerly worked with Fexco, has set out a list of objectives for the future.
They include boosting Chamber membership numbers, addressing key issues such as parking, traffic management and public realm developments.
“Going forward, Chamber will also be forming a number of sub-committees to oversee essential areas such as membership and management, brand communication and reputational management, advocacy, events and sustainability,” said a Chamber statement.
Arrested man released
A man aged in his 50's arrested on Wednesday morning in connection with the murder of Miriam Burns has been released without charge.
Ms Burns (75) was found dead in her Ardshanavooley home on August 15 last year. Her body was found “in unexplained circumstances” and, this week, investigating Gardaí arrested a man in Cork.
He was held under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 at a Garda station in Cork city but has since been released without charge.
A Garda spokesperson said that “investigations are ongoing".
It is believed that the man who was detained this week is not related to the late Ms Burns.
1.7m
visited Killarney National Park in last year
The importance of the National Park to the Killarney economy was outlined in great detail to members of Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce last week.
Members attending last Friday’s Annual General Meeting at the Killarney Avenue Hotel were told that 1.7 million people visited Killarney National Park last year. Chamber recently engaged the services of Repucon Consulting, a company that specialises in tourism research and economic strategies.
Counters in place at the key attractions showed that 200,000 people passed through the gates of the park at Knockreer, 106,000 visited Muckross House and 56,000 people enjoyed the traditional farms at Muckross.
In addition, 55,000 people walked Dinis and a further 50,000 climbed Cardiac Hill.
“While we acknowledge that the park is important for tourism, it is just as important for everybody that lives and works in the town of Killarney and we saw that
during COVID when the park was such a release for everybody,” outgoing Chamber President, Niall Kelleher, said.
“When the Chamber advocates in relation to projects for tourism it is equally important for the town’s people. What’s good for tourism is good for the town of Killarney.”
Plans in the pipeline include an upgrade of Knockreer House and its Italian-style gardens, a review of the park’s biodiversity plan, the development of a major new car park at Muckross House and Gardens and a novel project to attract more osprey birds to the park given that the species have a link with Killarney going back generations. The glasshouses in Muckross Gardens will be upgraded, toilets for the disabled will be built at Ross Castle, a new thatched roof will be erected on Deenagh Lodge for the first time since 2008 and a signage survey will be undertaken throughout the park. A plan to develop a new loop from Muckross to Dinis, making it safer for pedestrians and cyclists returning along the N71, is another priority.

Special visitors welcomed to The Mon NS
A €10k prize which The Mon won was officially opened on Wednesday as the school welcomed a number of very special guests.
| By Michelle Crean
Minister Josepha Madigan was there to cut the ribbon and was warmly greeted by Principal Mary Brosnan, Johanna Whyte from Fresh Today, David McGinn from Murray’s Medical, school staff and pupils.
Other guests in attendance were David Clifford and Gavin White who brought the Sam Maguire with them while Mr Grove's Fourth Class choir performed a rendition of 'Barr na Sráide'.
"It was wonderful to welcome everyone to The Mon for the launch of our Sensory Pod in association with Fresh Today &
Murray’s Medical," Principal Mary Brosnan told the Killarney Advertiser.
"The boys from Mr Liam O’Brien’s Arbutus Class and Ms Olga Ncube’s Butterfly Class were delighted to perform and present Minister Josepha Madigan with a framed copy their self-penned poem and a bouquet of daffodils from Micheál O’Shea's farm just around the corner from our school. We are a very special school with children from over 44 different nationalities and cultures with an amazing and dedicated staff to support them. Like every school we have a variety of activities, opportunities and experiences to offer the boys who come here.
We were delighted to add those when we won the Sensory Pod!"
There was excitement back in November when they heard the lovely news, she added.
"The Sensory Pod arrived the following morning and since then has been such a fantastic resource for the school. In the short time we have had the pod we have seen many benefits. It is used throughout the school day from the minute the gate is open in the morning, supporting boys with anxiety around coming
to school. It is used as a safe space for boys if they are upset or if they are overwhelmed in the classroom," she added. "We are finding more and more that the boys are asking to go to the pod at different stages throughout the day. This is showing us that they are developing and recognising their own emotions. This independence is invaluable now and will be throughout their lives. For their part in improving the school experience for all our pupils we wish to thank Fresh Today and Murray’s Medical."
Nursing home excels in inspection
Killarney Nursing Home was found to either be compliant or substantially complaint on nearly 20 checks carried out at the care facility.
The 56 bed Rock Road nursing home, which is operated by Mowlam Healthcare Services, was the subject of an unannounced inspection last November.
Inspector Ella Ferriter of the Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) published her report at the end of Jan-
uary.
“On the day of the inspection the inspector observed that residents were supported to enjoy a good quality of life in Killarney Nursing Home, by staff who were kind and caring. The overall feedback from the residents was that they were happy with the care provided by staff and that they enjoyed their life in the centre. They all complemented the kind staff, who gave them time and worked very hard,” said the report. Throughout the day the inspector ob-
served a friendly, relaxed and calm atmosphere in the home.
"Residents were observed to get up at a time of their choosing and told the inspector that staff were always respectful of their wishes. The inspector spoke with a number of residents during the inspection who said that they were happy in the centre and that the staff were always kind and helpful to them.” The inspector also met with two visitors who spoke very positively about the care their loved ones received.

Rotary donate funds from Afternoon Tea event
| By Michelle Crean
Following a lovely luncheon on Wednesday afternoon, members of Killarney Rotary Club made a lovely gesture.
Together they gathered outside the Great Southern Killarney and presented Máire Breathnach from Down Syndrome Kerry (DSK) with a cheque.
"We donated to Down Syndrome Kerry and a number of other local beneficiaries from the Afternoon Tea event held in October," Ciara Irwin-Foley from Killarney Rotary told the Killarney Advertiser. Máire, who has a child with Down Syndrome, said it was great to get the much
needed donation.
"We are a parent led group with no Government funding," she said.

Pádraig Harnett remembered at special concert
Liam O’Connor is instantly recognised as one of Killarney’s top musicians but the man who put him on the road to stardom was honoured on Friday night.
| By Sean Moriarty
The late Pádraig Harnett wore many hats in town but was better known as one of the town’s best sports journalists as he was a cycling, soccer and basketball expert.
The Park Road native devoted a huge amount of his time voluntarily to Celtic Football Club and St Paul’s Basket Club. He was a founding member of the local Nottingham Forrest FC Supporter's Club. A former hotel and cinema manager, Pádraig Harnett’s sudden passing last October left a gaping hole in all facets of Killarney society.
One man who is missing his late friend more than most is the world champion accordionist Liam O’Connor. He wanted to do something to celebrate Pádraig’s contribution to the town he loved so well.
On Friday night last, Liam organised a special gig at the Fáilte Hotel in memory of the man who once acted as tour manager for his band.
The concert, which also raised money for Killarney Celtic 'Football for All', was attended by close to 300 people.
These included members of the extended Harnett families, politicians, sports stars and friends of the very well-known Killarney man.
“Not many people know that around 25 years ago, Pádraig introduced me to Paudie O’Callaghan of the Fáilte Hotel,” Liam explained.
“Paudie was very busy with gigs at the time but he offered me a Wednesday night slot and the rest, as they say, is history. He was a loyal friend, so honest and very intelligent and down to earth and was a larger-than-life character.”

Biddies performance celebrates St Brigid
Two local Biddies groups performed at Muckross House as part of St Brigid's Day celebrations in aid of Kerry Parents and Friends Association.
The Killarney Parents and Friends Biddy Group - formerly known as the Beaufort Biddy Group - and Kilgobnet Biddies came together for the event. The tradition of the Biddies is one of the oldest and most colourful customs in Ireland, a blend of pagan and Christian pageantry, held on February 1 each
year, heralding the beginning of springtime and honouring St Bríd the patron saint of the farming community.
Master traditional craftsman, Pat Broderick, at Muckross House, was also part of St Brigid's Day celebrations, making a St Brigid's Cross as part of the traditions.

Racecourse to host tractor exhibition
| By Sean Moriarty
Killarney Valley Classic and Vintage Club will host its first tractor-only show in March.
The club is well known for running car events at Killarney Racecourse but on March 12 the venue will be transformed into an exhibition area for all forms of tractors – vintage, classic and modern.
The club also organises regular tractor road runs but next month's exhibition is a new departure.
Plans are at an advanced stage and will include guest speakers and a model farm display too.
“This will be a great family friendly event with all makes and models of tractors on show,” PRO, Tom Leslie, said.
“As space is limited all tractors must be pre-registered.”

Ireland to send €2m aid to earthquake rescue mission
The death toll from Monday’s earthquake that rocked Turkey and Syria could exceed 20,000 people by the weekend, authorities in the two countries have said.
Vast areas of the countries were destroyed when a 7.8-magnitude earthquake hit the region on Monday.
Turkey’s disaster management authority said that over 17,000 people in the area had died as a result of the devastation.
The official death toll in Syria exceeded 3,000 people.
The Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs [and Minister for Defence], Micheál Martin, TD announced that Ireland will provide €2 million in emergen-
cy assistance to the two countries.
The €2 million allocation is in direct response to the emergency appeal for funding from aid agencies working in Turkey and Northwest Syria.
‘‘The people of Ireland have been shocked by the loss of life in Turkey and Syria as a result of the devastating earthquakes. Thousands have already lost their lives and it is feared the numbers will only increase in the days ahead. In response, I have made an initial allocation of €2 million to the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and to the UN to address the urgent and immediate humanitarian needs of those affected in Turkey and Syria,” said Martin.
Tens of thousands more were left injured and without shelter in the freezing winter weather.
Gas lines and electricity have been cut off to prevent potential explosions making the rescue mission even more dangerous.
World Vision Ireland’s CEO Gillian Barnett, spoke of the organisation’s response.
“Our international teams are providing prompt support and emergency supplies including food, water, blankets, hygiene kits, and shelter. Our staff are at the coalface in this unfolding emergency. In an emergency there’s no time to be wasted and it’s imperative that a swift response plan is put in place."
Blue lobster is a one-in-twomillion find
It's been described as "the catch of a lifetime" as a young fisherman managed to snare one of the rarest lobsters in the world this week.
Stuart Brown (28), from Bangor, Co Down, caught a blue lobster. The odds of catching it are estimated by marine biologists to be two million to one!
The lobster was discovered close to Blackhead Lighthouse on the northern shores of Belfast Lough.
"We were sitting in about 50 to 60 feet of water and the fourth pot came up," he said.
"I sort of saw it, but I think I thought, "it's just a lobster". You could hear the tail going.
"I slid the pot down to the crew man who lifted it out and he made a comment: "That's very blue". You would get lobsters out there that don't look normal, they'd be a bit browner or redder, just something different with them, but nothing that extreme. I looked up Google to see how rare it was, and it was one in a two million chance of catching it."
Stuart has been fishing since the age of 11 and threw the lobster - which was just below the allowable size to keep - back into the water.

State funding as charity expands on the ground efforts
Ireland's Community Air Ambulance service is to get Government funding for the first time ever since its foundation.
Waterford man granted audience with Joe Biden
A Waterford man was a guest of honour at US President Joe Biden’s State of the Union address in Washington this week.
Maurice Barron and his wife Kandice are based in New York.
Their young daughter suffered from a rare kidney cancer. During her medical treatment and around the same time Biden was elected as President of the United States, the Barron family wrote a letter to the White House.
They were hopeful, like many more Americans, that the president would reintroduce a cancer Moonshot drug that would help Ava.
To their surprise he did just that and Ava is on the road to full recovery.
“The Barrons’ three-year-old daughter, Ava, is a survivor of a rare form of paediatric cancer. Mr Barron penned a letter to the President to express gratitude for the Bidens’ commitment to the Cancer Moonshot initiative and share their experience as parents and caregivers of a child with cancer. In 2022, Ava’s doctors gave the Barrons good news by officially declaring her in remission. Their family’s story is one of hope and possibility, inspiring us to continue working towards a future where we end cancer as we know it,” explained the First Lady ahead of the big event.
Ireland risks pricing itself out of tourism market
The Association of Professional Conference Organisers has warned that Ireland is pricing itself out of the business tourism market.
The group which represents Ireland’s conference organisers says the €75 million per year business is at risk.
Members of the association organise 175 events annually, bringing over 45,000 international delegates to this country per year.
The organisation, whose members provide valuable support and professional guidance to Irish conference hosts, are particularly highlighting significant increases in the costs of accommodation, equipment, catering, venue hire and transport.
“These are major challenges for association conferences who typically work with very tight budgets. Associations have also taken quite a hit financially in recent years and are very much still in financial recovery mode,” the association’s chair, Nicola McGrane, said.
“The cancellation of live in-person events saw a real draining of talent from the sector and rebuilding that pool is a priority.
Some people are choosing not to return to our industry and training new people will take time. We’re doing that while simultaneously working extremely hard to get the industry and events back up and running. It’s a hectic time for our members.”
The team behind the Irish Community Air Ambulance is to step back from providing a Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS) and will focus on its onthe-ground team of volunteer doctors and drivers.
The helicopter element of its services will be taken over by a Government agency - and as a result the organisation will change its name to CRITICAL.
The charity will continue to provide the Air Ambulance until February 28 and will then pass the baton to the new State-funded HEMS service based in the South West.
The charity will then focus on expanding its network of Volunteer Emergency Medical Responders into more communities across the country.
The charity was established in 2009 as the Irish Community Rapid Response, and in 2019 it successfully launched Ireland’s first and only charity Air Ambulance.
Since then, it has been tasked to more than 1,500 serious incidents and emergencies.
The charity has a fleet of Rapid Response Vehicles which have facilitated Critical Care Doctors and experienced GPs to respond to more than 1,800 incidents since 2020 alone.
Their teams are already on the ground in counties Mayo, Donegal and Dublin, with additional volunteer doctors set to join them in Kildare, Dublin, Wicklow and Wa-
terford in the coming months.
“The Irish Community Air Ambulance was established by our charity in 2019 in response to what we knew was a need for a HEMS service in the South West of Ireland. We have consistently shown how vital the service is, so much so that it is now set to be fully funded by the State,” Micheál Sheridan, CEO of CRITICAL, said.
“We would like to thank all of those who helped keep HeliMed92 flying for the past couple of years and the HSE for its support over the last 10 months. We will now focus our efforts on our ground based Volunteer Emergency Medical Response initiative and bring Critical and Advanced levels of care to more communities across Ireland, both rural and urban.”
CRITICAL will work closely with the National Ambulance Service and has a number of Volunteer Emergency Medicine Doctors and Volunteer Emergency Medical Responders around the country. These volunteers are tasked by the National Ambulance Service to support the provision of pre-hospital emergency care to critically ill and injured patients in their local communities.
“We’re excited to focus on our network of volunteer critical and advanced care doctors. We have plans to expand this network and are already working with the National Ambulance Service in this regard. Our ground teams responded to more than 1,800 incidents over the last three years alone, working in partnership with the emergency services to give people the very best chance of survival when they find themselves seriously ill or injured,” added Mr Sheridan.
Nicola McGrane.

Legal implications of a broken engagement
Most couples get engaged before they get married. If the engagement is called off and there is a dispute between the couple over property or finances, the Family Law Act 1981 allows them to take legal action against each other.
The Act also allows an involved third party (such as a family member) to take legal action. Before the Family Law Act 1981 came into effect, an engagement was considered a legally binding contract. This meant that, if the engagement was broken without lawful justification, the person responsible could be sued for damages for breach of promise. Since the 1981 Act, you cannot take legal action for breach of promise following a broken engagement. These rules relate to engaged couples. Cohabitation (living together) does not necessarily mean that a couple is engaged to marry.
Q: What happens to gifts which have been exchanged between the engaged couple?
A: When two people who are engaged give gifts (including an engagement ring) to each other, there is a presumption that the gifts will be returned (if requested), should the engagement end. However, if the giver dies, it is presumed any gifts were given without any conditions. In this case, the surviving fiancé(e) can keep the gifts. You can contest either of these presumptions in court if there is evidence to the contrary. These presumptions only apply to gifts given during the engagement. They do not apply to gifts given before or after the engagement. What happens to gifts from a third party?
A: If someone gives an engaged couple (or one of the couple) a wedding gift, it is presumed that the couple are joint owners. This can be contested if there is evidence to the contrary. It is also presumed that the gift will be returned (if requested), should the engagement end and the marriage does not take place for any reason. This includes the death of one of the engaged couple. If a third party gives a substantial benefit (not a wedding gift) to one of the couple as a result of the engagement, the third party can take legal action if the engagement ends. For example, if a relative carries out or pays for substantial work to improve a property which the couple had intended to use as their family home, the relative can apply to the courts for compensation.
Can somebody claim compensation for wedding preparation expenses if the wedding is cancelled?
A: Where an engagement has ended and one of the couple has incurred substantial expenses in preparation for the marriage (and has not benefited from the expenses), that person may apply to the courts for compensation from their ex-fiancé(e). Examples of expenses might include:
• Booking the wedding reception
• Booking the honeymoon
• Hiring a photographer or videographer
A third party (for example, a family member or friend) who incurs expenditure on behalf of one of the couple in preparation for the marriage and has not benefited, may also apply to the courts for compensation.
What are the property rights of engaged couples when the engagement ends?
A: When a couple (whose engagement has ended) disagrees about the division of property, it is treated in the same way as disputes between a married couple who are separating or divorcing. This only applies to property in which either or both of them had a beneficial interest while they were engaged. It does not apply to property acquired after the engagement ended.
What are the options for legal action?
A: If your engagement has ended and you want to take legal action, you must do so within three years. Such cases are usually heard in the Circuit Court. However, if very valuable property is involved, you may ask that it be heard in the High Court.
Legal actions in relation to substantial, non-wedding gifts from a third party (or wedding preparation expenses), can be brought in the District Court if the amount sought is under €15,000. Legal advice should be sought before taking any legal action.
For anyone needing information, advice or have an advocacy issue, you can call a member of the local Citizens Information team in Kerry on 0818 07 7860, they will be happy to assist and make an appointment if necessary. The offices are staffed from Monday to Friday from 10am to 4pm. Alternatively you can email on tralee@citinfo.ie or log on to www. citizensinformation.ie for further information.

HEAR and DARE offer reduced points and extra support
There are two schemes that can be applied for through CAO which are in place to level the playing field for students applying to higher education, taking account of disadvantages and challenges they have faced.
The Higher Education Access Route (HEAR) is targeted at students from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds while the Disability Access Route to Education (DARE) supports students who have had their second level education impacted by illness, disability or learning difficulties. In the case of both schemes, students must meet the minimum entry requirements and specific course requirements for the particular colleges and courses. Over the years I have seen the enormous benefits for students who avail of these and other access routes and the support of staff in access offices in the Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) is invaluable to applicants and parents.
DISABILITY ACCESS ROUTE TO EDUCATION
Students can apply for DARE under the following categories - Autistic Spectrum Disorder (including Asperger’s
Syndrome), Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD and ADHD), Blind/Vision Impaired, Deaf/Hard of Hearing, DCD – Dyspraxia, Mental Health Condition, Neurological Condition, Speech & Language Communications Disorder, Significant Ongoing Illness, Physical Disability, Specific Learning Difficulty. To be deemed eligible for DARE, students need to meet the Educational Impact Criteria and the Evidence of Disability Criteria. The reduction in points for DARE places varies. All students with a verified disability or learning difficulty, regardless of whether they have come through DARE or not, can avail of supports which may include some of the following: orientation programmes, learning support, assistive technology, library support, exam accommodations, educational and academic support.
HIGHER ACCESS TO EDUCATION ROUTE
The HEAR scheme is targeted at groups who are under-represented in higher education and as well as offering reduced points it also offers a number of academic, personal and social supports throughout the student’s journey in college. Many applicants do achieve the required points each year. To be eligible, applicants must
Time for Another Round
Beaufort Film Night returns for another screening which will take place at The Inn Between Bar, Beaufort, on Saturday (February 18) at 8.30pm.
Danish comedy-drama 'Another Round' is the feature on the night. It stars Mads Mikkelsen, an actor well-known to international audiences from his Bond villain role in Casino Royale to his appearance in the current Carlsberg ads.
Martin (Mads Mikkelsen) and his three teacher friends all seem to have hit a middle-age rut in their lives. When one of the group tells the others about an obscure philosophy proposing that humans aren’t born with enough alcohol in their blood and so cannot reach their
full potential, the men decide to test the theory for themselves.
As each of the gang initially observes positive benefits from maintaining the required blood-alcohol level of 0.05%, it is not long before they decide to push the boundaries of their experiment. This entertaining but ultimately thought-provoking comedy-drama explores friendship, masculinity and what it means to be happy. The film won the Best International Feature Film Oscar as well as Best Film, Best Actor and Best Director at the European Film Awards.
Beaufort Film Night is a non-profit community organisation founded by local film enthusiasts whose aim is to screen cultural English language and interna-
meet a range of financial, social and cultural indicators. Students must meet Indicator 1 (HEAR Income Limit) and a specific combination of two other indicators which include – medical/GP visit cards, means-tested social welfare payments, occupation status of parent or guardian (socio-economic group), disadvantaged status of the school (DEIS) and local area. Other factors considered include young people who are in the care of the State, HSE or TUSLA. Students and parents sometimes confuse the HEAR scheme with the student grant. Students who are eligible for grants (and who may or may not be eligible for HEAR) must apply separately to www.susi.ie. Supports provided to eligible students include an orientation, extra tuition if needed, study skills and exam preparation, one-to-one meetings with student advisors, social gatherings (when permitted), mentoring and extra financial assistance when available as well as advice regarding grants and scholarships.
DEADLINES AND APPLICATION PROCESS
Applicants who want to apply for either the HEAR or DARE schemes must have registered for CAO by the February 1 deadline. Once this has been done, HEAR and DARE applicants have until March 1 to indicate that they wish to be consid-

ered for the schemes and to complete the relevant forms online through their CAO account. Then all supporting documentation must be posted to arrive with CAO by 5pm on March 15. All deadlines are strict and non-negotiable so it is important to start applications well in advance of the final dates to avoid unnecessary stress. The mid-term break is the ideal time to work on these applications and to gather together the supporting documentation needed. It is advisable to keep copies of all documents sent to CAO and get a certificate of postage. Applicants will find out if they are eligible at the end of June, before the July 1 deadline via their CAO accounts. Comprehensive information on both the HEAR and the DARE schemes can be found on www.accesscollege.ie and www.cao.ie.

tional language films, fostering an interest in and appreciation of these category of films, films that normally don’t get a general release screening in Kerry. Films screened at Beaufort Film Night are carefully curated in order to appeal to a general audience. Beaufort Film Night is working in conjunction with Access Cinema, the Arts Council funded organisation which assists film clubs and film nights in Ireland with their screenings.
Beaufort Film Night would like to thank The Inn Between Bar for providing a venue for this cultural and entertainment opportunity. Admission to the film is €7 which will go towards covering the motion picture licence fee. Another Round has a 12A Certificate. Michael Fassbender returns
The organisers of the European Le Mans Series have created a poster that depicts Michael Fassbender’s dual careers.
The local Hollywood A-Lister has confirmed that he will contest the international motor racing series for the fourth consecutive year.
Since 2020, the Fossa man has been dividing his time between acting and being a professional racing driver.
Championship organisers, the Automobile Club de l’Ouest (France) and Le Mans Endurance Management revealed the entry list for the 2023 season on Monday. They also released a cinematic-style promotion poster that presents Fassbender’s motor racing career as a Hollywood movie.
He will continue to race for the Germany-based Team Proton Competition and
will share the No.93 Porsche 911 RSR-1 with Austrian Richard Lietz and Estonian Martin Rump.
The championship gets underway in Barcelona on April 23.

Don’t believe everything you hear
Facebook for example is now up 110% following its 66% loss last year, Netflix is up 120% while Coinbase is up 140%.
JOB LOSSES
One of the major contributors to the current market run has been the continued strength in the labour market. Despite headline news about countless lay-offs, we remain in one of the strongest labour markets in history.
In the US, 517,000 jobs were added in January - the largest monthly gain since last July.
The unemployment rate is now 3.4%, the lowest level since early 1969.
A NEW YEAR, A NEW MARKET RALLY
Lower inflation, a Chinese reopening boom and a resilient labour market resulted in the biggest January gain in the S&P 500 in eight years as Wall Street switched from cautious to confident at the drop of a hat.
In true market fashion, last year’s losers have turned into this year’s darlings. The Tech-heavy Nasdaq Index jumped almost 11% (now up over 17% at the time of writing).
Tech lay-offs have been front and centre, but as always, there is far more to a story than the headline the media are pushing. Yes, 1.5 million people lost their jobs in the US during December.
However, the crucial data point the media left out was that US employers hired 6.2 million people over the same time period. In fact, despite the media focus, the ratio of lay-offs to hires are well above historical standards.
Ireland’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was at 4.4 percent in January
well below the 5% from the same period a year previous.
THREE POINTS TO NOTE
Despite the struggles in the tech industry at the moment, it only represents a tiny proportion of the overall labour market. Job losses in tech have been more than offset by new job openings across airlines, hospitality and retail. Even during periods of robust economic growth, employers subtracted hundreds of thousands - and sometimes millionsof jobs per month.
DATA NEEDS CONTEXT
Yes, current tech cut backs are concerning but there is more to the story than just one data point. During the pandemic these companies pulled forward three years’ worth of demand into one. Consumer tech demand exploded. Head counts expanded rapidly. The pace was never going to be sustainable.
From its fiscal year-end in September 2019 to September 2022, the employee count at Amazon doubled, Microsoft’s rose 53%, Google parent Alphabet Inc.’s increased 57% and Facebook owner Me-
ta’s ballooned 94%.
WALL STREET JOURNAL
A single data point never tells the whole story, but why let the truth get in the way of a good story eh?
The truth is, for now, hiring remains strong, and the volume of current job openings out there suggests hiring could remain strong in the months ahead. Some leading indicators such as wage growth, temp roles and quit rates continue to fall, pointing towards the potential rise in unemployment numbers to come - but we are not there yet.
In my opinion we have reached ‘peak’ employment conditions. As the lag effects of tighter economic policy take hold, this labour market strength will start to show more signs of weakness, but we are slowing from a very strong positions. Don’t let the headline news send you into a frenzy just yet.

KERRY LADIES FLYING HIGH
Kingdom make it three wins from three in Division 1
By Adam
An 11-point haul by veteran forward Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh fired Kerry to their third straight league win against Donegal on Saturday.
Ní Mhuircheartaigh registered 1-8 (one penalty, four frees) as The Kingdom held firm in Tralee to maintain their 100% record in the top flight.
After earning promotion from Division 2 in 2022, simply avoiding relegation in 2023 would have been an achievement in itself but now Declan Quill and Darragh Long’s side are flying high at the top of the table. As the only team with nine points out of nine on the board, they must be considered as serious challengers for the title.
Another goal by team captain Síofra O’Shea – her third in as many games – in the 50th minute was important but it was Ní Mhuircheartaigh’s penalty that gave the home team some breathing
space. Her strike in the 55th minute sent her side five points clear. Donegal chipped away at that lead with three straight scores but, despite the best efforts of Susanne White (1-8), they couldn’t quite peg Kerry back. Next up for last year’s All-Ireland final runners-up is the visit of Dublin to Austin Stack Park. That match is fixed for this Saturday at 5.15pm.
The Dubs, winners of four All-Irelands in a row between 2017 and 2020, are currently in third place in Division 1 having have won two of their three games to date. Last weekend they just about saw off the challenge of Cork as two late frees by Carla Rowe secured a narrow one-point win.
Hannah Tyrell, who scored 1-6 from play at Páirc Uí Rinn, will require special attention if Kerry are to make it four from four.

Brilliant Cougars beat battling Carlow
The Killarney Cougars produced a super opening quarter which laid the foundations for a deserving victory over SETU Carlow at the Presentation Gym on Saturday evening.
The visitors have been well placed in the top four playoff places throughout the season but they were immediately under pressure from the Cougars who had a strong home support to welcome new American signing Martin Anthony Hill. The hosts lined out with the unavailable Alex Fleming, Darren Townes and Bill Wiseman, with the ever-present Jack Lynch taking over as captain.
The Cougars opened the scoring with a great drive to the board by Esebio Strijdhaftig and consecutive baskets by Tommy Bowler saw Cougars ahead 14-9 inside the opening three minutes.
Carlow responded with big threes from Conor Harkins but the Cougars tails were up and with Jack Lynch and Marty Hill adding three pointers, the Cougars finished the quarter well and led by 12 (32-20).
The Cougars remained in control through the second with a high tempo game. They increased the lead thanks to Andrew Fitzgerald (eight points) and a further six points each by Bowler and Hill. The Minnesota native was orchestrating the Cougars performance and they were up 19 (59-40) at the half-time break.
rematch on the cards
Kerry boxer Kevin Cronin was defeated by Jamie Morrissey in Belfast on Saturday night following a controversial points decision but it now looks like the pair may be set for a rematch.
The Milltown native was attempting to make history when he took on Morrissey for the Boxing Union of Ireland Celtic light-heavyweight title - no Kerry man has ever held a national title of this kind. After a gruelling battle, it looked as though Cronin had done enough to secure the win, but he was left visibly shocked and disappointed when his Limerick opponent was declared the winner by a single point (77-76).
Despite six points from the hard-working Armands Vaikuls, Carlow were struggling to make an impact.
The Leinster side came out energised for the third quarter, however, and through Ben Kelly Flynn (12 points), Armands Vailkuls (eight) and two three pointers by Conor Harkins, the deficit was reduced to just five points.
An action-packed final quarter saw both teams chasing the win and going basket for basket. A big three by Conor Harkin reducing the arrears to 76-73 with just seven minutes remaining before a basket by the impressive Conor Flynn steadied the ship for the Cougars. An excellent make under pressure by Stijdhaftig gave the Killarney men some breathing space. An unsportsmanlike and technical foul by Vaikuls saw him ejected as Cougars were starting to regain control. Two quick baskets by Marty Hill meant they opened up a 14-point gap (87-74) with four minutes on the clock.
The closing minutes saw a determined effort by the visitors but the Cougars held firm and just did enough to secure a first league win of the 2022/23 season.
COUGARS TOP SCORERS: Marty Hill 26, Tommy Bowler 22, Esebio Strijdhaftig 16, Andrew Fitzgerald 13, Conor Flynn 12.
CARLOW TOP SCORERS: Conor Harkins 26, Ben Kelly Flynn 19, Armands Vailkuls 18.
“If the fire wasn’t fuelled enough, it’s really fuelled now,” Cronin said immediately after the bout, which is already being heralded as a potential Fight of the Year contender. “I feel hard done by but it was a good fight. The crowd were happy and we both came out of the ring safe.”
On Monday the Boxing Union of Ireland appeared to green-light Part 2 of the Cronin-Morrissey rivalry.
“Congratulations to Jamie Morrissey who became a two weight BUI Celtic champi-
on at the weekend,” they tweeted. “He defeated Kevin Cronin in a thrilling contest. The BUI would be happy to sanction a rematch for the Irish title at light heavyweight subject to agreement from both teams.”
The signs are that both parties would be agreeable to such an arrangement. Speaking to irish-boxing.com, Morrissey indicated that Cronin “deserves a rematch”.
“I’ll entertain that and it’s got to be for the Irish title,” Morrissey said. “That’s something massively exciting in itself.”
Kerrisk wins second Scratch Matchplay in two years
Following a number of delays due to bad weather, the final of the 2022 GMIB Single Scratch Matchplay finally took place at Killeen on Sunday last.
The final pairing after four rounds of golf was John Kerrisk and Michael Maher. Played off the blues in a strong southerly breeze, it was a real test of both golfers’ games.
Kerrisk got off to a fine start and parred the first five holes, which left him six up after nine. Maher then pulled one back at the 10th when Kerrisk found the water.
Both players hit the par five eleventh in two. Kerrisk two-putted for birdie as Maher had to make do with par.
A great up and down from 40 yards on the 12th secured a par for Maher, and Kerrisk missed for a half to keep his opponent alive.
The match finished on the long 13th, however, when Kerrisk hit a drive and a four iron to the back of the green (just one of many superb long iron shots he hit on the day).
A five was sufficient for Kerrisk as he powered to his second Scratch Matchplay title in two years.
Cronin-Morrissey
VICTORY: The Killarney Cougars squad who defeated SETU Carlow at the Pres Gym on Saturday night.
FINAL: Captain Colm O'Shea with Michael Maher and John Kerrisk before the final of the GMIB Scratch Matchplay at Killarney Golf & Fishing Club.

ROUND 2: Jamie Morrissey and Kevin Cronin square up at their weigh-in. The Munster pair could be set for another fight - with the Irish title on the line.
Clifford beauty lights up easy Kerry win
Adam Moynihan reports from the Fitzgerald Stadium
NATIONAL LEAGUE DIVISION 1
Kerry 3-16 | Monaghan 0-14
FITZGERALD STADIUM
A spectacular second-half goal by surprise inclusion Paudie Clifford helped Kerry to an impressive 11-point over Monaghan in Killarney on Sunday.
The All-Star forward wasn’t named on the initial panel of 27 but when his name was called out as No. 26 before the game, a loud cheer rang out around the O’Sullivan Stand. Kerry fans had to wait until the 46th minute to see the Fossa captain make his first appearance of the season but it didn’t take him long to make his mark.
After soloing all of 80 metres, the elder Clifford dispatched a perfect finish beyond the reach of Rory Beggan to send Kerry nine points clear with 51 minutes on the clock.
In truth the game was drifting away from Monaghan before Clifford’s cameo but his sensational contribution was the exclamation point.
With two points on the board and David Clifford and Seánie O’Shea waiting in the wings ahead of Mayo away in two weeks’ time, Kerry manager Jack O’Connor was a happy man leaving Killarney this evening.
GIFTED
Monaghan stayed in touch with Kerry for the first quarter, thanks in the main to a string of needless fouls that gifted the away team some easy scores. Conor McCarthy broke the deadlock with one such free in the sixth minute and Tony Brosnan got Kerry off the mark two minutes later with a placed ball of his own.
The reliable Dessie Ward and Kerry’s bustling full forward Darragh Roche exchanged scores before Mícheál Bannigan tapped over a free to re-establish the Farney’s early lead. Kerry then went on a mini-run, instigated by a neat team move that saw Tony Brosnan and Micheál Burns combine to tee up the excellent Tom O’Sullivan for a close-in score.
Good work by Barry Dan O’Sullivan from a hop ball led to another Brosnan free, and then a high, skyscraper of a point
from the stand side into the scoreboard end by Donal O’Sullivan gave the hosts a two-point lead.
However, two more avoidable fouls handed Monaghan’s free-takers McCarthy and Bannigan a point apiece and midway through the first half, the scores were level at 0-5 each.
The Kingdom finally began to inject some pace into proceedings in the second quarter with Dara Moynihan and Micheál Burns especially active. The All-Ireland champions scored five of the next six points with Roche, Brosnan (free), Moynihan, Donal O’Sullivan and Burns all hitting the target.
A tasty individual effort by Monaghan’s best forward, Conor McCarthy, left the scores at 0-10 to 0-6 at the break.
UNDONE
Monaghan’s good work in the first half was rather quickly undone in the second as Kerry exerted their dominance in all sectors. By the time Darragh Roche evaded Beggan and goaled in the 39th minute, the home side led by eight (1-12 to 0-7) and the result already appeared to be beyond question.
In fairness to Vinney Corey’s charges, they rattled off three unanswered points over the next 10 minutes, but then Clifford’s introduction set the tone for the remainder.
Adrian Spillane’s goalbound effort was tipped over in the 49th minute (Spillane was the last of Kerry’s six forwards to score) and then Clifford gathered the ball inside his own 65, sprinted straight for goal, and finished emphatically to make it 2-13 to 0-10.
Things got worse for Monaghan four minutes later when Ryan O’Toole saw red for a high tackle on Stefan Okunbor. In the next attack, Tom O’Sullivan sauntered forward to drive a trademark outside-of-the-boot shot between the uprights and Kerry led by doubles scores (2-14 to 0-10).
Stephen O’Hanlon was one of Monaghan’s shining lights and he scored
two of his three points in the final quarter, but in the end they counted for little.
TG4’s Man of the Match Donal O’Sullivan capped a fine full debut with a nice goal in stoppage time as Kerry picked up their first league win of the season.
KERRY: S Murphy; G O’Sullivan, J Foley, T O’Sullivan (0-2); P Warren, T Morley, P Murphy; J Barry, BD O’Sullivan; M Burns (0-1), D Moynihan (0-1), A Spillane (0-1); T Brosnan (0-4f), D Roche (1-2), D O’Sullivan (1-3).

MATCH RATINGS
Average rating out of 10 as voted on by our readers
Words by Adam Moynihan
ON THE RECORD
Adam Moynihan was on hand at the Fitzgerald Stadium to record the thoughts of Jack O’Connor after Kerry’s big win
After 20 minutes above in Donegal we started to slow down the pace of our play. We went lateral and backwards and sideways. It doesn’t suit us. We can’t play like that. We need to play the game at pace. That was the message all the week and I thought we did that today.
All-Star centre forward Seán O’Shea is set to make his return against Mayo on February 18
Mike Breen tweaked a hamstring on Wednesday night. It was probably a carry-over from the game last weekend. It’s not too serious. It’s unfortunate for Mike - he’s getting no run at it.

to go. Paudie came on and scored 1-1.
SUBSTITUTES
Shane MURPHY 7.3 A commanding display. Kickouts were good and saved well from O’Hanlon. 1 Graham O’SULLIVAN 6.9 Picked up the excellent O’Hanlon and did okay despite conceding 0-3. 2 Jason FOLEY 6.7 Was rarely troubled by Monaghan’s attackers. 3 Tom O’SULLIVAN 8.0 Outscored his man from play (not for the first time). A joy to watch. 4 Pa WARREN 6.7 Made some positive contributions, including an early block. 5 Tadhg MORLEY 6.9 Steady throughout without having to over-exert himself. 6 Paul MURPHY 7.1 Looks determined to return to the championship 15. Made his 100th appearance. 7 Jack BARRY 8.0 Did some fine work in defence, offering a physical presence. 8 Tony BROSNAN 6.8 Harsh rating in my opinion. Got through a pile of ball and set up lots of scores. 13 Dara MOYNIHAN 6.7 Played much better than this rating suggests. 11 Adrian SPILLANE 6.8 Typically abrasive and energetic. 12 Paudie Clifford (46) 8.3 Stefan Okunbor (51) 6.5 Killian Spillane (51) 6.6 Greg Horan (56) 6.1 Ruairí Murphy (59) 6.1 Darragh ROCHE 7.7 Another powerful performance. A great man to win dirty ball and kick unlikely scores. 14
I’d say Seánie will be involved in some shape or form.

It's a big bonus for us to get two new lads like that. There will be fair skelping now [at training] when they all come back.

St Brendan’s bidding to Eamonn
Fitzgerald previews Saturday’s Munster colleges final between the Sem and Rochestown
St Brendan’s will defend their Munster colleges title at Mallow tomorrow (Saturday) with a throw-in time of 1pm. It is yet another Kerry v Cork rivalry, this time St Francis College, Rochestown in the Under 19A competition.
St Brendan’s are to the fore in this competition. They didn’t win the inaugural final in 1928 but won their first in 1929 and tomorrow they will bid for their 24th title. No one comes near. Tralee CBS have won 16 titles. Kerry colleges have dominated this competition and in the last 10 years, different Kerry colleges won the title, but none from Cork. The Sem hold all the aces going into tomorrow’s final. Rochestown’s one and only title so far goes back to 1950, when they beat the Killarney college in that final.
Last year the Sem went all the way to Croker but lost out to Naas in the Hogan Cup final. They have progressed steadily throughout this year’s Munster campaign and finished their semi-final with a flourish recently with a decisive win. Mind you, it took them quite a while to gain the upper hand in that game as Rob Monaghan dominated for the Tralee college. The Ardfert football and Kilmoyley hurling star looks a good prospect going forward with Kerry U20s and hopefully at senior level in the future.
I was impressed by how St Brendan’s fought back in that game and fashioned a decisive 2-16 to 0-13 win over Mounthawk.
Shay O’Meara is a very confident and competent goalkeeper and is well-fronted by the ever-improving full back line of Micheál Lynch (Dr Crokes), Cian Lynch (Glenflesk) and James Williams (Kilcummin). Charlie Keating was the man of the match for the Bandon game and most likely will not be recovered from injury for tomorrow’s final.
St Brendan’s need to assert midfield dominance from the start tomorrow and they have the forwards to deliver the match-winning scores. Included in that set are sons of famous Glenflesk and Kerry All-Ireland winners, John Crowley and Séamus Moynihan. Luke Crowley will operate at full forward, and it is great to see him back after a long injury rehab. He scored seven points last time out (three from frees) and is a key man both from frees and from play. He
does need to distribute the ball more often to a better-placed teammate.
Jamie Moynihan is an industrious and important half-forward, not a defender like his father Séamus.
The big scorer in the semi-final was Callum Cronin, the Glenflesk opportunist who finished with 2-1.
So, with three Glenflesk forwards up front, I expect the Sem to retain their title against Roco, with a bit to spare. However, they need to be wary of overconfidence and should remember that Roco have some of that Cork minor team that defeated Kerry.
Rochestown had an easy win over Coláiste an Spioraid Naoimh in their semi-final, 1-10 to 0-7. They will depend on midfielder Kevin Lyons, bet-
ter known as a Cork U20 hurler. Seán Coakley is their best forward and their free-taker. Evan O’Connor will also need close attention. Nevertheless, St Brendan’s get the vote to win once more.
The Corn Uí Mhuirí is a wonderful competition for second-level students and goes right back to 1927 when the great Dr Eamonn O’Sullivan saw the need for such a competition. He got great help from Canon Breen.
Eamonn was some man and had foresight. The trainer of eight All-Ireland-winning Kerry teams - equal to Mick O’Dwyer - he was the driving force behind the decision of Dr Crokes to build the Fitzgerald Stadium in 1930 as a fitting memorial to Dick Fitzgerald.
He also promoted athletics and bridge and he was very progressive with the Killarney golf club. He was RMS at St Finan’s Hospital and it was nice to see a short article in last Sunday’s Kerry v Monaghan match programme on ‘the patients’ gates’ at the back of the Michael O’Connor terrace.
BOUNCING BACK
A big crowd of supporters turned up for the Kerry v Monaghan game in Round 2 of the National League at sunny Fitzgerald Stadium on Sunday last. As expected, Kerry bounced back after the disappointment of that narrow one-point defeat away to Donegal.
It was the controversial point which infuriated Kerry’s boss Jack O’Connor. Was it a point, or wasn’t it? That was the away win Jack had targeted to complement the expected three home wins and that would be enough to ensure Division 1 status for next year. That is the modus operandi as Kerry plan for these games without key players with longterm injuries and others resting after long campaigns with their clubs. The Kerry management team is committed to trying out as many fringe players as possible to formulate the championship team to defend the All-Ireland title.
They are on the lookout for good replacements, especially at midfield going forward without the long-serving veteran David Moran who has retired. Did Sunday’s game shed any light on a replacement for Moran? Not yet anyway. Jack Barry partnered Moran last year, but he is no match-winner. Joe O’Connor and Diarmuid O’Connor are out injured, and Diarmuid will be in the mix for the 8 or 9 geansaí for the championship. So too will Stefan Okunbor, Greg Horan, and Barry Dan O’Sullivan. I don’t think they will move Seánie O’Shea from centre forward. He is a top-notch free-taker and a useful forward but does not have the legs for chasing down midfield opposition. He has a flat-footed gait. I would like to see Mark Ryan, brother of Shane, tried out. He had a great season for Rathmore on the road to Croke Park.
The Man of the Match on Sunday last was Donal O’Sullivan. I have seen him in Sigerson duty and he did well. He is well worth trying out, well-able to win his

own ball, well-built and able to score. One will hold off on assessment of his potential to gain a place until he comes up against the likes of Mayo on the weekend after next away in Castlebar. The games versus Galway and Tyrone will also be good indicators. Darragh Roche is also doing well in the scoring stakes.
I was surprised to see Paudie Clifford enter the fray midway through the second half. He got great cheer and an even bigger one two minutes later when he scored a brilliant goal. He started close enough to midfield and with that deft ciotóg he weaved his way
through the middle. The bamboozled Monaghan defenders expected him to load off at several stages, but Paudie put on a brilliant one-man show and raised the green flag. Monaghan are no great shakes and started without four key regulars: Conor McManus, the Hughes brothers and Jack McCarron. Kerry had only five of their starting All-Ireland 15 and struggled in the early stages yet still led 0-10 to 0-6 at half-time. The result was never in doubt in the second half, which ended with that Donal O’Sullivan goal set up by a brilliant through-pass from Tony Brosnan. Next stop Castle-
bar. Jack’s continuous assessment will continue.
15 PLAYERS
The rule is clear, a maximum of 15 players for each team on the field and that has been dominating the press since the Kilmacud v Glen controversy blew up. Yet the implementation of the rule is technically broken in the majority of games. In most cases at club levels and even at intercounty, most eager subs are slipped onto the playing surface before the substituted player leaves the field.
There were 10 substitutions at the
Fitzgerald Stadium on Sunday last. In most cases, the sub entered before the other player left the field of play. More about that and referees in future editions.

With three Glenflesk forwards up front, I expect the Sem to retain their title against Rochestown with a bit to spare. However, they need to be wary of overconfidence.
Killarney Athletic
U13 DIVISION 1: Killarney Athletic B 4-5 St Brendans Park FC B. A cracking game of football this afternoon at Woodlawn with the young blues just coming up short. Park opened the scoring on 20 mins with a well worked move. Shane Tomlinson hit back for Athletic just before the break with a long range effort that found the top corner. Athletic found themselves behind again just after the restart to which the response was instant, a goal from Luke Foley and a brace from Darragh Fitzgerald saw Athletic race into a deserved 4-2 lead. To their credit Park stuck to the task and netted 3 goals in the last fifteen minutes to see them take all three points back to Tralee. Thanks to the visitors for a sporting fixture and we look forward to our cup fixture in the coming weeks.
SENIOR: Killarney Athletic B 7-0 Lisard
Wanders B. Goals from Darren O’Doherty, Shane Lynch, Jason O’Grady, Cian Tobin, Adam O’Connell. Killarney Athletic Bs came up against a stubborn Lisard Wanderers in ferndale on Sunday afternoon. After a period of pressure Darren O’Doherty found the back of the net after a sublime cross from Conor Collins and this seemed to open the floodgates. Minutes later after a delicate Jason O’Grady through ball, Shane Lynch found himself one on one with the Lisard keeper and he calmly found the bottom corner. Just before the break Jason O’Grady latched onto a loose ball in the box and made it 3-0 at the break. Lisard kept their shape well in the second half but after Darren O’Doherty dispatched a penalty he won himself and a number of fresh legs from the Athletic bench the game was soon put to bed. Shane Lynch set up substitute Adam O’Connell for a fifth before Cian Tobin rose highest to header in at the back post. Athletics clean sheet was nearly wiped out when the Lisard striker slid his finish past ‘stand in’ keeper, Ryan O’Carroll but Cillian O’Regan was there to make a last ditch clearance. With the last kick of the game O’Doherty completed his hat trick and Killarney Athletic ran out 7-0 winners.

U14 NATIONAL CUP LAST 32: Our under 14s made the long trip to Dublin for their Last 32 game against Belvedere FC. Dr Crokes GAA
EAST KERRY SUPER LEAGUE: Dr Crokes
1-15 Rathmore 0-10. On Saturday last we hosted our first game of 2023 with a fine win over Rathmore in the East Kerry Super League. We lined out with a young team who played a very defensive first half. Our goal scorer, Mikey Casey, found the back of the net in the 8th minute of play after intercepting a poor Rathmore
kick out. Rathmore had their own goal chance just 5 minutes later when a high ball was kicked in to the square and subsequently cleared by Shay O’Meara in the Crokes goal. The second half of the game saw a more experienced team introduced with Daithi Casey, David Shaw, Sean Coppinger and Bryan O’Shea coming on throughout the half. We finished our first game of the season with a positive 8 point win over the All-Ireland Intermediate Champions. We now play Glenflesk at 8pm on Friday night in Lewis Road.

DARRAGH ROCHE: Kerry managed their first win of the 2023 National League, with a comfortable win over Monaghan at Fitzgerald’s Stadium this afternoon. Darragh Roche was once again one of Kerry’s best on the day. He was on form from the off, firing over with his first shot with his left foot, despite the close attentions of several Monaghan defenders. His next score was another beauty, this time with his right foot, again finding the target with ease. He also set up a couple of more scores Up, with his quick hands finding players in space. Even a taking a high tackle near half time didn’t stop him after half time. He got the crucial first goal 4 minutes into the second half. Faced with a one on one with Rory Beggan, he calmly dummied dropping the ball to his foot, sending Beggan down, before rounding him and rolling the ball into the net. A cool finish that pushed Kerry clear in the game. Congratulations to Darragh and Kerry on the win. Report by Michael Healy.
