Steps to make Killarney a '10 Minute Town' took another move closer to reality this week after over €1m in funding was announced for various projects.

These include the construction of a network of cycleways in four different locations across the town.

Last October it was announced that Killarney was one of 35 approved ‘Pathfinder’ projects in 19 different counties across the country.

‘Pathfinder’ projects are designed to transform public transport, walking, and cycling, including the reallocation of road space from cars to cyclists and pedestrians.

The idea is that every necessary service in the town is accessible within 10 minutes and that cycling and walking will take more of a precedence than driving in the future.

This ties in with the ambitious cycle infrastructure project unveiled by Kerry County Council in February 2021.

Under this plan it was revealed that Kerry County Council is to build four new dedicated cycle lanes in the town. The funding will go towards a cycleway to and from the Cleeney Roundabout along Rock Road, a cycleway linking Fitzgerald Stadium and Lewis Road with the town centre, a similar project on Park Road that will eventually link Killarney Sports Centre with the town via a

strands of this funding. The Park Road/Pinewood links will get €180,000 under three different allocations.

“I wish to welcome the announcement by Minister for Transport, Eamon Ryan TD of €2,350,000 for 27 projects in Kerry under the Active Travel Scheme,” said local Fine Gael TD Brendan Griffin.

“This is very welcome funding which will help develop safer walking and cycling routes in Kerry.”

In addition to the cycleway projects, other traffic related issues in the town and surrounding areas will be addressed under this funding scheme.

cycleway in the Pinewood Estate. These new projects will link with existing cycle lanes in the town, including Muckross Road, which is subject to a separate funding upgrade by Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) and the already opened Flesk Way project.

FUNDS

This week the Minister for Transport,

Eamon Ryan TD, confirmed that the National Transport Authority (NTA) has allocated funds to Ireland’s local authorities with a view to spending €290m on walking and cycling infrastructure in 2023.

The Rock Road section has been allocated the largest amount of money and will get €783,000 under two separate

Tourism chief raises industry concerns

Fáilte Ireland Chairman Paul Carty has warned that smaller businesses connected to the tourism industry could be at risk if the Government continue to take more International Protection Applicants into the country.

Speaking at an international tourism event in Killarney last Saturday night, Mr Carty said one of the things that keeps him awake at night is a concern over the availability of hotel rooms with over 25 percent of rooms around the country already full or not available.

“From a humanitarian point of view, the Government had to do what they did and I commend them and I think they are doing a brilliant job on that but the consequence is the fallout for tourism and

particularly pubs, restaurants, visitor attractions, retail and others,” he said.

“They say for every one Euro spent on accommodation, €2.50 is spent on the peripheral businesses.”

The Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth (DCEDIY) is now accommodating over 75,600 people nationally (over 55,650 Ukrainian, almost 20,000 International Protection Applicants (IPAs)) compared with 8,000 at this time last year according to figures released to the Killarney Advertiser.

There are currently 642 IPAs accommodated in Killarney, 53 of whom are children - up to and including January 22. Meanwhile, a DCEDIY spokesperson told the Killarney Advertiser:

“The Department is aware of some hotels nationwide whose ‘exclusive use’ contracts for IPAs will expire between now and the end of April 2023 resulting in a loss of bed spaces for International Protection Applicants. Discussions are ongoing with hotels to see how loss of beds can be mitigated.”

This includes €5,000 for Fossa (see separate story below) and €15,000 for Ballydribbeen.

The Ballydribbeen funding ties in with a separate project aimed at both reducing traffic congestion from Madam’s Hill to Cleeney Roundabout and a footpath linking the same two areas to allow Aghadoe residents to walk into town.

Safe Routes to School Programme for Fossa

Fossa National School is one of eight schools in Kerry accepted into the Safe Routes to School Programme.

Funding, announced this week by the Department of Transport, has allocated €5,000 to the school.

Local councillors have been calling for traffic management in the area for a long time. Minister for Education and Kerry TD Norma Foley announced the Fossa funding on Wednesday.

“I welcome confirmation of this significant funding which will enhance and develop walking and cycling infrastructure across the county,” she said.

“The Safe Routes to School Programme has seen a myriad of imaginative and fun ways for our school communities to reinvent their active pathways to schools. This widening of the programme will have a transformative effect on the daily commute for these eight schools in Kerry.”

Egg Design achieves Business All-Star Accreditation

Trilogy of comedy on offer by Dóchas Drama

Dóchas Drama Group will present a series of three short comedy plays next week.

All three plays are written and produced by Dóchas and will be acted out by the group’s members.

The opening act, ‘Flossing Around’ is written by Ger Madden and directed by Brian Bowler.

“A woman has an innate fear of the dentist. We go on the journey with her as she faces her fears, with hilarious consequences,” explained the group’s Liz Ryan. This will be followed by 'Faraway Hills' which is written by Mary Quirke and directed by Michael Mills. It is a tongue in cheek look at family life.

“A son wants to get away from small town life. His mother wants to keep him at home but his father can't wait to see the back of him,” added Liz, who plays the mother in this short play.

Brain Bowler wrote the third instalment called ‘A Little Visitor’ which is directed by Ryan Jones.

“There are lots of misunderstandings when a hypochondriac visits a group of doctors who have other things on the their minds,” added Liz.

The run, which will feature all three performances each night, starts Wednesday next week and continues Thursday and Friday (February 8 to 10) at the Killarney Avenue Hotel. Tickets are €10 and are available at the door.

Egg Design has achieved Business All Star Accreditation with the All-Ireland Business Foundation (AIBF), an autonomous national accreditation body tasked with enterprise development and the promotion of Best-in-Class in Irish business.

The ambitious business, owned by Kerry native John Sheahan, offers creative, effective, web design and development that empowers Irish and international businesses to sell more of their products and services online.

Egg Design specialise in engaging WordPress powered websites and secure, professional e-commerce solutions which saves clients both time and money - allowing them to concentrate on their own business.

The Egg Design team has been recognised by the All-Ireland Business Foundation for their outstanding conduct in the core areas of trust performance and customer-centricity.

"Egg Design are proud to have been offered and accepted our All-Star Accreditation in 2023," John Sheahan, owner of Egg Design, said.

"For 14 years we have focused on providing world class websites and website support to our clients, and this honour just rubber stamps that. This amazing achievement also recognises our dedication to the continuous improvement and development of our web design service. On behalf of me and all my team I would

like to thank our clients for supporting us down through the years. We look forward to partnering with our fellow All Stars going forward.

"Our prestigious accreditation recognises the company’s conduct in the areas of trust, commitment, performance and customer centricity," Deputy Chair of the Adjudication Board, Kieran Ring, said.

"Egg Design is hereby included in the AIBF Register Of Irish Business Excellence."

Managing Director of the All-Ireland Business Foundation, Kapil Khanna, said the accreditation, which is now held by over 500 firms, is needed by the thousands of small and medium businesses which operate to their own standards but have nothing to measure them by.

He said: “We evaluate a company’s background, trustworthiness and performance, and we speak to customers, employees and vendors. We also anonymously approach the company as a customer and report back on the experience. The business goes through at least two interviews and is scored on every part of the process against set metrics.”

The Foundation actively engages and supports its network through peer dialogue, collaboration, mentoring and enterprise development activities. Companies are qualified for accreditation by completing an enterprise audit and are identified by their use of the AIBF’s Business All-Star Marque.

Aidan O’Mahony opens up about his fight with depression

Kerry football legend Aidan O’Mahony appeared on TV last night (Thursday) to speak about his mental health battle.

Aidan appeared on the popular TG4 Laochra Gael and spoke openly about how he overcame chronic health problems in his youth to take his place on one of the greatest teams of all time.

But when he was in his prime, he became embroiled in controversy as the first GAA player to fail a drugs test.

His mental health deteriorated and after a spell in a treatment centre, he faced the greatest challenge of his life - to rediscover his purpose and his love of the game. He found both in a promise he made when his father passed away.

Five All-Ireland senior medals, two AllStar awards and over 70 senior championship outings in Kerry colours, shows just what the Rathmore man gave to Kerry football.

DOCUMENTARY: Former Kerry footballer Aidan O’Mahony appeared on TG4’s Laochara Gael last night (Thursday).

He may have retired from inter-county football six years ago, but only a few short weeks ago he was part of the Rathmore club side that won the All-Ireland Intermediate Club title.

“I needed to step away from reality, society, everything that happened externally over the years had crept in and I had a decision whether I wanted to go down a dark path or go and get help about it,” the Tralee-based Garda said.

A Killarney web development firm has earned a major accolade showing that it has exceeded the highest standards in business.

Palliative service receives an enormous present

Pulling their most festive jumpers on resulted in over €16,000 being raised for the Kerry Hospice Foundation - which was handed over to the charity on Monday.

Students from St Brendan's College, St Oliver's National School, Killarney Community College, Presentation Monastery, Holy Cross Mercy, St Francis Special School, Lissivigeen National School and St Brigid's Presentation presented a cheque for €16,402 to the charity - the result of their combined 'Presents 4 Palliative' fundraiser in December.

This year was the third year the schools joined forces for this cause and while they initially set their goal at €10,000, the amount it costs to provide a week of the organisation's services, they quickly surpassed their goal. This donation brings the total donated from the combined efforts of these schools, over three years, to €30,000.

The Five LCVP class who coordinated the

event in St Brendan's College were very grateful for the support they received and delighted to contribute to the relationship built up between themselves, the other schools and this incredible cause.

"Our LCVP class cannot thank the Killarney community enough for their support, both in words and donations," student Dara O'Shea.

"The hospice is an organisation that provides a crucial service for the local community and is one that has touched many of our own homes - to be able to give back to them is a real honour for myself

and my classmates."

Aaron Coffey said that he feels "proud and honoured" to have taken part in this fundraiser.

"They do amazing work, giving people the gift of comfort and dignity in their final days and we were delighted to be able to raise so much for them."

Ryan McCarthy added that they "thoroughly enjoyed" organising the event and were "delighted with all the support" they got. "We are very proud to have exceeded our goal for a cause as special as the Kerry Hospice Foundation."

For TJ O'Sullivan he said they learned a lot about the hospice through this fundraiser and are delighted to have raised such a substantial amount.

"As students we are very proud of ourselves and the entire school community and incredibly grateful for the generosity shown by all who donated," student Mark Sheehan added.

€1,500

donated to Kerry Mountain Rescue

Wednesday was the day that €1,500 was donated to a very worthy cause as photographer Marie Carroll-O'Sullivan handed the funds over to a local group.

For the past seven years she had chosen the Jack & Jill foundation as a recipient of her annual photoshoot fundraiser but this year, her eighth year, she decided to make a change and keep the funding more local.

However, it was the Kerry Mountain Rescue Team this year as Marie knew they were building a new base in Killarney town and the amazing work that they do.

"Last summer I was sitting outdoors in

the sunshine, glass of wine in hand at the stunning Europe Hotel and watched the rescue helicopter fly over and back a few times. Exceptional people I thought, and change is good! I knew the team at Kerry Mountain Rescue were expanding their base camp at Killarney Garda Station and in need of funding. It's a mere drop in the ocean but it's a dent all the same," Marie told the Killarney Advertiser.

"I was delighted my trusted admin personnel, Collette Clifford O'Shea decided to remain on board with me when I changed the beneficiary to Kerry Mountain Rescue. It had always been Jack & Jill which held a special place in Collette's heart having lost her son Sean at just 21 months."

DONATION: Marie Carroll-O'Sullivan (The Little Memory Gallery), presented a cheque for €1,500 to the Kerry Mountain Rescue Team (KMRT) from her photoshoot fundraiser held at the International Hotel. From l-r were: Catriona White (Manager International Hotel), Liam Ryan (KMRT), Marie Carroll-O'Sullivan (Photographer), Collette O'Shea (Admin), Mick Long (KMRT) and John O'Sullivan (KMRT).

"I think it's good to give back while we are here, no matter now big or small. Each and every family, business, group that walked through the door to have their portrait taken, helped me to help the Kerry Mountain Rescue in some little way. I love that quote 'individually we are one drop, together we are an ocean'. Without Collette and the support of the

community and the use of the Christy O'Connor Suite at the beautiful International Hotel, it simply would not be possible.

"It's not a huge amount, but every little helps. As KMRT's John O'Sullivan said, "we'd be a while collecting at church gates to the tune of €1,500", which meant the world to me."

Scarteen to consider General Election options

Patrick

The Killarney resident, who is the current Mayor of the Kenmare Municipal District, paid tribute to his fellow Fine Gael member Brendan Griffin TD who announced on Tuesday that he is not going to contest the next election.

Griffin said that family reasons were the main factors in his decision to withdraw from national politics. However, it is also understood that Mr Griffin was left disappointed that he did not secure a ministerial position in the Government reshuffle just before Christmas.

Griffin was first elected to Dáil Eireann in 2011 after a stint with Kerry County Council.

He was re-elected in the 2016 and 2020 elections. In that time, he served as Junior Minister for Sport and Tourism and more recent was the Fine Gael party’s deputy chief whip.

Mayor O’Connor-Scarteen paid tribute to his Fine Gael colleague.

"I wish my friend and colleague Brendan Griffin and his family all the best for the

Killarney secures three gold medals in national business awards

Three hotels in Killarney have won gold medals at the Virgin Media Business Gold Medal Awards.

Now in its 33rd year, the awards the best of the best in the hotel and catering sectors across the country.

This year, judges received over 460 entries from 150 hotels, guest houses, country houses, restaurants, cafés, bars and catering companies from around Ireland.

“An important factor in the Gold Medal Awards is the credibility and impartial nature of the judging process. Every property that undergoes this process is subject to benchmarking against a strict set of criteria and a blind site inspection conducted by the judging panel,” said an event organiser.

“This panel comprises respected industry experts from across the hospitality, culinary and catering sectors.”

Three Killarney hotels took top awards in different categories at the awards cere-

mony held at the Galmont Hotel and Spa in Galway on Tuesday night.

The Great Southern Hotel was named as the best Business and Conference Hotel in Ireland.

“To be recognised among the greatest hotels in Ireland is a marvellous achievement for Great Southern. It is fantastic news and has provided all our staff with a little morale boost. Our Business & Conference partners and customers are extremely important to us with some relationships in place annually for over 30 years. Receiving this recognition for the service we provide is a fantastic achievement and testament to the incredible work of our outstanding staff," said Michael Jacobi Managing Director said.

The best front of house team award went the staff at the Aghadoe Heights Hotel and Spa.

In the Hotel Casual Dining Experience category the Dunloe Hotel and Gardens came out on top.

future. We were both elected to Kerry County Council in 2009 and have worked closely as part of the Fine Gael team in Kerry,” he told the Killarney Advertiser.

"Brendan has always been a true public servant, hardworking, honest and very capable. His strong vote in three General Elections regardless of national political swings is testament to the high esteem he is held by the people of Kerry. He combines a great skill in delivering for Kerry people on grass roots issues and making his voice heard on national and legislative issues.”

Griffin’s departure will leave Fine Gael vulnerable in the next election which is about two years away if the current Government serves its full term.

O’Connor-Scarteen says it’s too early to say for certain if he will run, but will give it consideration.

"The Fine Gael team in Kerry will be strategising on how best to progress in next year's Local Elections and the General Election whenever that happens," he added.

“I will consider it in due course.”

It will trace the history of Liebherr in Killarney, how the company grew from a greenfield site in Gortroe to its current multi-acre factory and hotel group.

O’Connor-Scarteen has said that he would consider running for Dáil Eireann in the next General Election.

Marie Meets

was very lucky to have worked with the best"

With a commute of less than five minutes on foot door to door to her place of work, Connie O'Leary is the definition of the 'heart of the community'. She has more than given back to society since she moved into her home in Ballyspillane in 1979.

After 16 years in the role, Connie is hanging up her boots as Project Coordinator at Ballyspillane Family Resource Centre. She has always held the best interests for Ballyspillane from the word go!

Keeping the O'Leary name in passing on the reins, Derek O'Leary, (who recently appeared in last month's 'Marie Meets', with Killarney Musical Society) will succeed in filling those rather large boots!

From being a resident in the community of Ballyspillane to Project Manager at this beautiful establishment Connie, tell me how it began?

"As we lived in the area, I decided to volunteer with the local residents association in 1994 having completed Youth & Community Development Studies with UCC. With two other members of the residents committee at the time, we set up a Youth Club in Ballyspillane which we ran together for five years, and in 1995 I was elected as Chairperson of the Residents Association and held that position until 2005," Connie said.

"My role as Project Coordinator began from a store room with another member of staff at the time working out of our community facility with two rooms. In 2005 we were thrilled to be awarded Government funding to build a new centre, which was completed in 2009. Working in the community sector is never without challenges, but I knew I loved it and this is where I wanted to be. The reward is seeing the changes the services and the facilities offer to peoples'

lives and the feedback from parents and local principals of the schools in our area kept us all going. It is hugely rewarding. Sitting in my office here today at the purpose-built Ballyspillane Family Resource and Childcare Centre, with a team of 20 staff providing a universal range of community and family support services to families and communities in the Killarney Municipal District area, gives me great pleasure to see how far we have come since I began my position here. It has been a shared journey in supporting the community together. We are a team here in Ballyspillane and always have been. From the different Board of Managements down through the years, to the community volunteers, past staff and the wonderful present team, I was very lucky to have worked with the best. The centre is bright, welcoming and vibrant, and offers a range of family support services including a high quality childcare service for parents and children. I am very proud to call it my place of work."

Connie, can you give me a brief outline of what services the centre offers to the

public?

There are many but here are a few - community childcare, crèche and preschool, parenting programmes, Meitheals, strengthening families programmes, counselling and play therapy, summer camps, KETB LCYP creative youth projects, family support, and support for those in Direct Provision centres, health and well-being initiatives, domestic violence awareness campaigns, mental health and suicide prevention supports. There are many more, but I hope this gives you an insight of the daily happenings here at the Ballyspillane Resource Centre.

Throughout your term here at the Ballyspillane Resource Centre, what have been your most memorable or proudest moments?

"There are three that spring to mind. In 2011 we were thrilled with the wider acknowledgement by Kerry County Council as a nominee of places for Mary McAleese to visit, which she did. As well as our staff, we invited a resident from each household in Ballyspillane, local VIPs and rep-

resentatives from our community groups were invited to attend on this special day. In 2012 we won Pride of Place and the theme of our application was celebrating 25 years of Community Development. In 2019, in partnership with the local Residents Association, we celebrated the 40th anniversary of Ballyspillane Estate, inviting the many agencies we work with to celebrate with an ecumenical community blessing at the centre."

Having been such a huge rock to the community, how will you manage to pass the door given it's literally on your doorstep?

"I am ready to retire and spend time with my family and extended family who have supported me throughout my career since the very beginning. My husband Jimmy retired during COVID, a difficult time to establish new routine, so I am looking forward to spending time with him, my daughter Miriam, Dan, and my lovely grandson Éanna. I am delighted to be retiring and even more delighted with what has been achieved while here. As a family, we are looking forward to taking a break away in the coming weeks to celebrate my retirement as well as a special someone's significant birthday. I won't be idle. I am still involved in a volunteer capacity in many areas. I am very confident in Derek, and I know he will continue to do a wonderful job in bringing the centre to the next level."

Local wins Creative Photographer of the Year

One local photographer has been named as 'Creative Photographer of the Year' this week.

Representing Killarney, Tara Donoghue Photography, was thrilled to receive the accolade from the Irish Wedding Awards - especially as it is her second time to get it as she also won in 2020.

"We are absolutely thrilled to win this award for the second time," Tara told the Killarney Advertiser.

"It is a great honour to be recognised in such a competitive industry and to be able to bring this award home to Kerry! We would like to thank all of our couples who have made this possible."

Top wedding specialists gathered at The Crowne Plaza Hotel Dublin Airport on Monday to celebrate the champions of The 5th Irish Wedding Awards 2023. The 2023 awards recognised exceptional specialists and suppliers that go above and beyond to ensure the uniqueness of every wedding. These suppliers are from a variety of industries and they work their hardest to ensure that wow factor is present at every wedding they’re hired for.

Tourism VAT rate should be "continued indefinitely"

A Kerry Fianna Fáil Councillor believes the current 9% tourism VAT rate should be continued indefinitely despite "the allegation that some hotels were not passing on the saving to its customers".

The reduced VAT rate of 9% was introduced by the Government in response to the challenges posed by COVID-19 to the hospitality sector.

“I believe a return to a 13.5% Tourism VAT rate would be counterproductive at this stage, to small and medium businesses that welcome visitors to our country and our county,” Councillor Michael Cahill said.

awards recognised businesses that meet the needs of their customers offering top services under one roof.

“The winners represent the industry’s gold standard that work tirelessly to meet the demands of the couples and their guests," a spokesperson for The Irish Wedding Awards 2023, said.

“Catered food is already charged at 13.5%, alcohol at 23% and accommodation presently at 9%. This sector is providing pretty decent returns to the Exchequer and should be supported. All parties in this debate, including the Government and accommodation providers, should review their position and ensure their actions do not contribute to ‘killing the Goose that laid the Golden Egg’."

He explained that the tourism industry is "in a very volatile market", as can be seen by the enormous challenges "posed by COVID-19 in recent years".

"A grain of rice could tip the balance either way and great care must be taken not to damage it irreparably. We are all aware that the next six to 12 months will be extremely difficult for many businesses with the increase in the cost of oil and gas, etc,, and a return to the 13.5% VAT rate will, in my opinion, close many doors. If a minority are ‘price gouging’, then it should be possible to penalise them and continue to support the majority who offer value for money to our visitors.”

Excitement growing as youngsters prepare for INEC show

It's been three years since they hit the stage and the excitement for the Killarney Musical Society (KMS) children and teen members is almost explosive.

The youngsters had another fun-packed week of rehearsals as they prepare for their March production on the INEC stage.

"As this is our first show in three years we have a completely new children’s chorus but the eagerness and enthusiasm the boys and girls are showing makes them look like ‘old pros'," KMS PRO, Linda O'Donoghue, told the Killarney Advertiser.

"Mary O'Callaghan our Cast Liaison said there is great attendance at all rehearsals. She is always on hand or at the end of a phone for all cast, young and old. She ensures everything runs smoothly for the cast. Last Sunday she made sure that some of the children had finished their numbers in time to make the Credit Union quiz in the Gleneagle Hotel."

Freya Griffin from Kilcummin who joined the children’s chorus this year is having great fun. She loves the dancing rehearsals with Oliver Hurley and has made lots of new friends.

"Her mom Caroline, who used to sing and dance when she was the same age, has bought her tickets for the show already. She can’t wait to see Freya on the INEC stage."

Freya’s neighbour Caoimhe Murray has

Minister passes the buck on major road upgrade

Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport Eamon Ryan has passed the buck after being challenged on why the Killarney to Farranfore road has been further delayed.

Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) have been putting off the revelation of the preferred route corridor for the badly needed road for months.

Elected councillors at the January meeting of the Killarney Municipal District expressed their anger after TII failed to honour a pre-Christmas promise.

In November last year the roads authority said it would put the preferred corridor on public display by the start of December.

So far, nothing has been published. This prompted local TD Michael HealyRae to bring the issue to the Dáil where he asked Minister Ryan to make a statement on the delay. However, the Minister passed the buck,

saying the matter was for the TII, the very agency that has not honoured its late 2022 promise.

“As Minister for Transport, I have responsibility for overall policy and exchequer funding in relation to the National Roads Programme. Under the Roads Acts 1993-2015 and in line with the National Development Plan (NDP), the planning, design and construction of individual national roads is a matter for Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII), in conjunction with the local authorities concerned,” said Ryan.

“This is also subject to the Public Spending Code and the necessary statutory approvals. In this context, TII is best placed to advise you on the status of this project. Noting the above position, I have referred your question to TII for a direct reply. Please advise my private office if you do not receive a reply within 10 working days.”

Next Friday (February 10), will mark 10 working days from the date of the statement was made.

been with KMS a number of years. She is in the teen's chorus and thinks Oliver makes everything look so easy. They all have so much fun at rehearsals even on their first night back after the Christmas break when they mixed up all the dance moves and managed to confuse him! But in true Oliver style it was all sorted before they went home with no fuss.

Caoimhe’s mom Amanda, who is in the adult chorus and nan Phil who is in the KMS committee, are delighted Caoimhe is keeping the family tradition going along with her cousins.

Freya and Caoimhe have no favourite numbers in this year's production. They love them all. However, Naoise O'Connor from Fossa, who has been with KMS a number of years, loves 'Mamma Mia'. She is in the teen chorus and can’t wait to perform on the huge INEC stage again. She loves all the beautiful harmonies in 'Godspell' and said Jimmy and Caoimhe are fantastic teachers. Her mom Peggy loves to hear her singing around the house and is looking forward to the big performance.

"We have an amazing group of talented boys and girls this year, but don’t take my word for it, come to the INEC Arena on March 7, 8, and 9 and see for yourself," Mary O'Callaghan added.

Showcasing Killarney to an influential audience

Kerry’s hospitality professionals turned out in style for the Skal President’s Dinner on Saturday night.

It's the social highlight of the year for professional tourism and travel organisations and it was also a perfect opportunity to show the best of Killarney. Held in the Plaza Hotel, it was hosted by Kerry Skal President Michelle Rosney who used the occasion to highlight the best of Killarney’s performing arts talent, cuisine and locally produced drinks. There were special performances on the night by singers and dancers from St Brigid’s Presentation Secondary School and the West End House School of Arts who brought The Liberator, Daniel O’Connell, back to life for one night only to deliver a passionate dramatisation of a famous speech.

Skal is the largest international hospitality networking organisation in the world with 13,000 members in 308 clubs in almost 90 countries.

Fáilte Ireland Chairman Paul Carty said in his speech that the contribution Killarney has made to the Irish tourism industry should not be underestimated. He added that the tourism industry supports over 3,500 jobs in Killarney and over 7,000 in the rest of Kerry. He said the hard work put in by tourism professionals in Killarney over the years

is paying off and when Fáilte Ireland surveyed hundreds of domestic and international tourists, at the height of the season last August, they couldn’t speak highly enough of their experience with 97 percent saying they were very satisfied.

“The national figure is 90 percent so Killarney is actually seven percent higher than the national average and that’s truly exceptional,” he said. Over 55 percent of visitors to Killarney also spend time in other parts of Kerry and towns, like Dingle, Kenmare and Tralee, and really benefit from the spinoff.

INDUSTRY CHALLENGES

The Fáilte Ireland chairman said his organisation is acutely aware what Killarney has faced in recent years and the challenges it currently faces and every support possible will be provided to help.

Mr Carty said Fáilte Ireland last year launched a destination experience and development plan for Killarney and that will see the town reach its full potential through sustainability and the development of year-round tourist attractions. He said costs were also a big concern

with energy bills, in particular, going through the roof and putting businesses under serious pressure. Staffing was another serious problem for the industry as so much talent was lost during the pandemic.

“An awful lot of great people left our industry and they’re not coming back, so there is a great shortage,” he said, adding that Fáilte Ireland was working hard to overcome the difficulties being experienced.

Handball continues to shine in Killarney

Handball in the Killarney region can look back at 2022 as a year of continued progress, the promotion of handball in East Kerry and the introduction of the sport to a new generation.

It has been a phenomenal and successful year for the Spa Killarney Club. At the Annual General Meeting of the club this week, one of the highlights of the year singled out for mention was the hosting and promotion of a One Wall National Tournament which attracted players from all over Ireland to the Killarney venue in March.

There was joy for the home club at the tournament when Currow native and Spa Killarney Club member Aoife Walsh had an impressive victory in the highly competitive Ladies B championship. There was also an international dimension for the club in 2022 when four players took part in the European One Wall Tournament in London. At this event Eoin O’Donoghue won gold in the Open Doubles B championship where he partnered with John Joe Quirke from Glenbeigh and Brendan O’Donoghue won a silver medal in the Over 40 Doubles final.

“As a new club we were delighted with the success we achieved in 2022. In January Aoife Walsh and Sinead Moriarty took home silverware in the highly competitive She’s Ace competition in Tyrone. This really was our springboard for suc-

cess during the year and resulted in some of our players competing in the One Wall national finals in Roscommon in July. We are looking forward to an exciting 2023 and hopefully welcoming new members to the club,” said Eoin O’Donoghue, PRO of Spa Killarney Handball Club.

The club rounded off a memorable year in October when they hosted the Munster One Wall championships and the Kerry Handball Board AGM in November where club members Kieran O’Brien was elected president of Kerry Handball and Brendan O’Donoghue was appointed delegate to the Kerry GAA Board.

Officers Elected for 2023/2024: Brendan O’Donoghue (Chairman), Sinead Moriarty (Vice Chairperson), David Gillespie (Secretary), Eoin O’Donoghue (PRO) and James O’Brien (Treasurer).

OPEN NIGHT

Spa Killarney Handball Club will host an Open Night at the Spa GAA Club on Monday night (February 6). This will be an opportunity for attendees to savour the thrill of handball, have a taster game and meet the club players. It commences at 7pm and all over 18s are welcome.

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS

Contraceptive Services in Ireland

Birth control or contraception is the use of medicines, devices, or surgery to prevent pregnancy.

You can get contraception from most pharmacies in Ireland. Most contraception will need a prescription from a GP but you do not need a prescription for emergency contraception or condoms.

You can get prescriptions for contraceptive drugs and devices, as well as advice about contraception from GPs, voluntary organisations and private family planning clinics. Voluntary and private family planning clinics usually have charges but may waive them or have lower fees in certain cases.

In Budget 2023 it was announced that the age range for free contraception will be extended to include women aged 16 and aged 26 to 30, from 1 September 2023. This change requires legislation.

Is contraception free in Ireland?

A: You can get free contraception if you are:

A woman or person with a uterus

Aged 17 to 26

Living in Ireland

What contraception costs are free for people aged 17 to 26?

A: Any GP appointments about your contraception options

Contraception prescriptions from your doctor (at participating pharmacies)

Emergency contraception (the morning-after-pill)

Fitting, removal and check-ups of long-acting reversible contraception (LARCs)

Other types of contraception such as contraceptive injections, implants, IUS and IUDs (coils), the contraceptive patch and contraceptive ring

Prescriptions for combined oral contraception (the daily pill)

How do I get free contraception if I am aged 17 to 26?

A: You do not need a medical card. You need to book an appointment with a GP or doctor to discuss your contraception. This appointment will be free. The GP and pharmacy will ask for your:

• PPS number

• Name

• Date of birth

• Address

Your GP will use this information to let the pharmacy know not to charge you for your free contraception prescription. You can also collect your free contraception from some family planning clinics.

Is contraception covered by my medical card?

A: If you have a medical card, you get

free contraceptive drugs, devices and free GP services including contraceptive advice. This also includes emergency contraception. You will have to pay a prescription charge for items you get from pharmacies under the medical card scheme.

What is the situation, if I do not have a medical card?

If you do not have a medical card, and you are not eligible for the free contraception scheme (above), you will have to pay for contraception and contraceptive services. You may be able to reduce the cost of your contraception through the Drug Payment Scheme. For example, the cost of long-acting reversible contraceptives such as the IUS (hormonal coil) or IUD (copper coil). You may also be able to claim tax relief on medical expenses.

Can I get free condoms in Ireland?

A: Condoms are not free under the medical card or free contraception scheme.

You can get free condoms from:

Sexual health or GUM (genitourinary medicine) clinics

Some sexual health NGOs

Many third level colleges

Where can I get emergency contraception?

A: Emergency contraception is a backup contraception. You can use emergency contraception up to five days after having unprotected sex, but it is more effective the sooner you take it after unprotected sex.

You can get emergency contraception tablets (sometimes called the morning-after pill) over the counter in most pharmacies without having to go to a doctor for a prescription.

You can get free emergency contraception if:

You have a medical card, or

You are a woman or person with a uterus, aged 17 to 26 and living in Ireland

You can read more about contraception services on the HSE website: www.sexualwellbeing.ie.

For anyone needing information, advice or have an advocacy issue, you can call a member of the local Citizens Information team in Kerry on 0818 07 7860, they will be happy to assist and make an appointment if necessary. The offices are staffed from Monday to Friday from 10am to 4pm. Alternatively you can email on tralee@citinfo.ie or log on to www.citizensinformation.ie for further information.

Irish women to play in front of 83k in World Cup opener

The Irish Women’s Football Team could play in front of as many as 83,500 people during this year’s World Cup.

The Girls in Green have qualified for this year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup final in Australia.

Their opening match – on July 20 – against the host nation was originally supposed to be played at the 42,500-seater Sydney Football Stadium.

However, there has been unprecedented demand for tickets.

They were snapped up by the fans of the

hugely popular home-side, nicknamed 'The Matildas' and by thousands of Irish people living in Sydney. This prompted FIFA to seek an alternative venue.

The game has now been moved to Stadium Australia in Sydney which can accommodate 83,500 fans.

If the new venue sells out it will be the biggest crowd the Irish team have ever played in front of and could be the second biggest women’s football match ever.

The USA defeated China in the 1999 World Cup final in front of 90,185 fans.

The 2023 Woman’s World Cup is being

co-hosted with New Zealand. The Kiwis face Norway in their opening match in Auckland which takes place at the same time as the Republic of Ireland versus Australia match. As a result, over 100,000 fans are expected to attend the two simultaneous games. "We have taken a decision that will enable over 100,000 fans to attend the opening match-day, providing more opportunities for supporters to engage with the FIFA Women's World Cup as a month of football we will never forget gets underway." said FIFA Secretary General Fatma Samoura.

Over 11k patients on trolleys in January

A shocking 11,289 patients have been without a hospital bed this month.

That's according to the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation’s TrolleyWatch figures this week.

The top five most overcrowded hospitals for January include:

1. University Hospital Limerick (1,180 patients)

2. Cork University Hospital (1,145 patients)

3. University Hospital Galway (728 patients)

4. Letterkenny University Hospital (650 patients)

5. St Vincent’s University Hospital (594 patients)

“A lack of adequate planning has put unnecessary stress on nurses and the patients they are trying to provide care for throughout the month of January," INMO General Secretary, Phil Ní Sheaghdha, said.

"The number of patients on trolleys in wards outside our emergency departments have been unacceptably high. This practice should not be allowed to continue as a measure to try take pressure off our emergency departments. According to two recent opinion polls, over 75% of people would not visit an Emergency Department. The strategy of telling people to not attend hospital will have knockon effects across the health service for months to come. We cannot continue to accept the wait until things get unbearably bad approach before an attempt is made to lessen the pressure on our public hospital system. Nurses and their patients deserve better than this.”

It would seem that some people have more money than sense - as one of the world's richest men is trying to look 18 again!

Aged 45, centi-millionaire (one who has more than one hundred million in the bank) Bryan Johnson is currently trying to "reboot his body" and constantly monitors his vital signs.

The ultra-wealthy middle-aged tech guru currently has a team of 30 doctors and health experts closely monitoring his every move.

Oliver Zolman is a 29-year-old regenerative medicine physician who is leading the project. His aim is to reverse the age of Johnson's organs such as his brain, heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, tendons, teeth, skin, hair, etc., to make him live a longer life.

This year alone it's costing €2m with the work being carried out a medical suite at Johnson’s home in Venice, California. “The body delivers a certain configuration at age 18,” Johnson said. “This really is an impassioned approach to achieve age 18 everywhere.”

Johnson also has a strict diet which include 1,977 vegan calories a day. He must exercise an hour every day with a high-intensity programme three times a week.

By night he must wear blue light blocking glasses two hours before bed and go to sleep at the same time.

In the interest of fine-tuning this program, Johnson constantly monitors his vital signs. Each month, he also endures dozens of medical procedures, some quite extreme and painful, then measures their results with additional blood tests, MRIs, ultrasounds and colonoscopies.

And the doctors are saying that all his hard work is starting to pay off as Johnson’s body is "medically" getting younger!

Is this the secret to a long life?

Almost €40m funding for fishery harbours

An investment of €37.3million is to be given to Ireland’s six fishery harbour centres.

Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Charlie McConalogue TD, announced the allocation for capital projects in 2023 in Ireland’s six state-owned fishery harbour centres at Killybegs, Ros an Mhíl, An Daingean, Castletownbere, Dunmore East and Howth through the Fishery Harbour and Coastal Infrastructure Development Programme.

New ‘Bay Watch’ campaign launched to tackle illegal parking

The Disabled Drivers Association of Ireland (DDAI) has launched its new 'Bay Watch' campaign.

At present, Gardai and Traffic Wardens do not have the power to issue fines to drivers who illegally park in accessible parking bays in private car parks like shopping centres, educational institutions, hospitals and other spaces.

To tackle the issue, the campaign was launched with two objectives in mind. The first is calling on the Government to change the existing legislation so that Gardai and Traffic Wardens can now impose fines on those parking illegally in private accessible bays. The second is to highlight the ongoing abuse of disabled parking bays in general and push for greater enforcement of existing regulations.

A nationally representative survey by Coyne Research, carried out in tandem with the DDAI’s own member research, underscored the lack of knowledge about the existing legislation around private car

parks not only amongst the public but also disabled drivers themselves.

“Our 'Bay Watch' campaign has been launched to tackle the anomaly in the current legislation whereby those parking illegally in accessible bays in private car parks are allowed to get away with it," Richard Ryder, Communications and Marketing Manager for the Disabled Drivers Association of Ireland, said. "It should not be left solely to the private car park owners to manage the problem. Our research has shown that such a move has the backing of the public who also support the prosecution of illegal parkers, not just the handing out of fines. We are also urging the local authorities to be more proactive in enforcing existing regulations and crucially, verifying parking permits. Almost 70% of our members said their disabled parking permit had never been inspected by either Traffic Wardens, the Gardai or private car park operators and 96% of our members want more action in tackling disabled parking bay abuse.”

“The six fishery harbour centres are critical infrastructure for our seafood industry," he said.

"Approximately 90% of all fish landings into Ireland come through these facilities. This demonstrates how successful these Harbours have become as economic hubs for the seafood industry. The continuous development of the infrastructure in these harbours has been critical to the fishing fleet and the land-based seafood processing industry. These harbours are the economic devel-

opment drivers for the largely peripheral coastal communities and hinterlands where they are located. The Government is committed to continuing to develop these harbours to underpin our seafood industry and drive on economic development in these areas.”

In addition to the Fisheries and Seafood Production industries, the fishery harbour centres are accommodating an ever-increasing amount of diverse marine commercial business, including commercial cargo traffic, cruise liners, restaurants and other leisure, tourism and social activities. All of these activities complement the critical economic activity generated by the fishing industry and help to maintain the vitality of these coastal communities.

In 2021, approximately 88% of the sea fish landed into the State was landed into the six fishery harbour centres. For 2021, Bord Iascaigh Mhara reported that the Irish seafood industry contributed €1.26 billion to the Irish economy.

Green comet to appear for first time since the Stone Age

A green comet last visible during the Stone Age is set to whizz by the night sky this week.

Comet C/2022 E3 (ZTF) - discovered early last year - may become visible to the unaided eye to observers with a clear and dark sky.

The massive snowball has been brightening as it approaches the sun and the earth.

According to NASA, the comet was discovered on March 2 last year by astrono-

mers using the Zwicky Transient Facility’s wide-field survey camera at the Palomar Observatory in San Diego County, California.

The comet made its closest approach to the sun on January 12.

According to EarthSky, the icy celestial object will make its closest pass by earth in early February - around 26 million miles to 27 million miles (42 million kilometres to 44 million kilometers) away.

The green comet will be visible near the North Star 'Polaris' as a faint green

smudge. It will be distinguished from stars by its energised particles and streaking tails of dust. However, the space object will be more difficult to see for those in the Southern Hemisphere.

The comet will make its closest approach of Mars on February 10.

The Virtual Telescope Project will share a livestream of the comet in the skies above Rome if the weather gets in the way for skywatchers.

ADVISOR DIRECTORY FOR KILLARNEY

Housing will never be the same

investment options out there for Irish investors.

Despite high ongoing fees (mortgage, maintenance, insurance etc.) and the actual headache of being a landlord, it's easy to see why real estate functioned as the de facto investment portfolio for an entire generation.

Wealth creation was a rinse-and-repeat function where couples put money away until they had enough for the 'next house'. As a result, we have an economy where 70% of household wealth is tied up in real estate.

Driven by the profits it created, Ireland became obsessed with owning real estate.

But real estate as an investment won't be nearly as successful for our generation. (If you are able to get a house, that is)

All you have to do is look at the anecdotal evidence all around us to confirm this. My parents bought the house they currently live in for 30k (pounds) 35 years ago. The house is now worth roughly 450k.

I typically despise these back-of-theenvelope calculations when It comes to property, given the endless variables and ongoing costs involved, but bear with me.

That's a gross return of 15 times the original value. Now there are upgrades, a change in currency and other adjustments to consider here, so for argument's sake, let's call it 10X.

To achieve the same level of growth over the next 35 years, you would be left paying 4,500,000 euros for what is a pretty modest house.

THIS WILL NOT HAPPEN.

Sure, we will still see property prices increase over time, but the rate of growth won't be anywhere near as meaningful for one simple reason.

Interest rates.

Artificial Growth

Over the last 30 years, real economic growth has been stagnant, yet Ireland has experienced enviable nominal growth.

How did we manage it?

We created imaginary wealth. We pushed interest rates lower and lower to stimulate economic growth. And it worked.

After all, if you make 100k/year you can probably afford a 400k mortgage at 4%. At 2%, with the same 100k/year salary you can now take on 600k in debt. So, were we getting richer, or was the debt just easier to afford? Where do we go from here?

Why it's important to have

Spring is a wonderful time to dream of holidays and trips that could happen during the year.

If you are planning to take an overseas trip then you should consider a travel insurance policy. A decent travel policy can provide cover against losses such as:

flight cancellation cover, cruise connections, business equipment, golf equipment, and ski equipment. Some travel policies will give a discount if you hold a private medical insurance policy that covers medical cover abroad.

We have now squeezed interest rates as low as they can go.

The house price appreciation we have seen was justifiable because the mortgage rates on housing continued to fall in recent decades. This allowed people to take on more debt without severely impacting their ability to repay that debt.

If we go back to my parents, they were paying 14% on their mortgage. Mortgage rates are currently between 2 to 3%. A relentless drop in interest rates gave way to higher and higher prices for houses, but interest rates are now on the floor. The juice has been squeezed.

In fact, the trend has started to reverse, with rates expected to rise 1.5% in the first half of 2023

FINAL WORD

Be mindful that the same credit expansion cannot happen again. How the next generation thinks about their investment options has to change. Banks offering 0% returns for the use of your money and a housing ladder you can't get on are not your only two options.

Superbly located 4 bed semi-detached home within minutes walk of Killarney town centre.

Well maintained throughout, the property is not overlooked from the rear and is a great opportunity to purchase a home in this strong residential area. Private rear garden with side access.

Three bedroom semi detached property superbly located within minutes of Killarney town and on the doorstep of Killarney National Park. Positioned overlooking a green area to the front and boosts a private east facing rear garden which is not overlooked. The property has been well maintained by its current owners and would be an ideal starter home / retiree home / downsizer.

Is it a good time to sell your property?

Recently published property outlooks are suggesting single digit growth in prices this year.

The MyHome.ie quarterly report found the market had held up better than evidence had suggested in 2022. The number of vendors cutting asking prices remained at low levels, while many house prices were being settled above asking prices.

However, the report warned that the resilience of the housing marking is set to be tested this year. It found annual asking price inflation slowed to six percent nationwide, meaning the asking price for the average home in Ireland is now €330,000.

There were 15,000 available properties for sale on MyHome.ie in the fourth quarter of the year – an improvement on the same time last year but still below pre-pandemic levels.

Average time to sale agreed was 2.7 months nationwide which the report said

is indicative of a very tight housing market.

The report said it expects to see 28,400 house completions in 2022, exceeding its previous forecast of 26,500 finished units.

The author of the report, Conall MacCoille, Chief Economist at stockbrokers Davy, said it appeared the market had held up better than evidence had suggested.

“The number of vendors cutting their asking prices is still at low levels. Also, transactions in Q4 were still being settled above asking prices, indicative of a tight market,” he said.

Recent months had seen worrying trends in the homebuilding sector, with housing starts slowing, and the construction PMI survey pointing to the flow of new development drying up.

“We still expect housing completions will pick up to 28,400 in 2022 and 27,000 in 2023. However, the outlook for 2024 is far more uncertain. The Government’s

ambitious plans to expedite planning processes are welcome although, as ever, the proof will be in the pudding,” he added. Locally, and unsurprisingly, the lack of supply of new and second-hand properties remains the dominant issue. There has been very little new construction due largely to the rising cost of construction, labour, materials and utilities which in turn is putting pressure on the second hand market.

This market proved particularly strong in 2022 with active bidding experienced on the majority of house sales and a large proportion of guide prices being generally exceeded.

The detached family home end of the market is particularly strong with increased competition for a limited number of available well located family homes. So, what lies ahead and is it a good time to sell your property?

The answer is a tight market with scarcity of supply being a factor. If selling now you

will benefit greatly from a lack of supply of available homes (therefore less competition) provided your property is marketed correctly of course!

For anyone considering placing their property on the market, contact DNG Ted Healy 064 6639000 killarney@dng. ie for genuine honest advice on how to achieve the best possible price for your home.

Forestry Rally to raise funds for air ambulance charity

Rally drivers from across Ireland will help bring Critical and Advanced Medical Care to communities across the country when they race through the woods in Kerry this month.

For the second year in a row the charity that operates the Irish Community Air Ambulance has been announced as the beneficiary of the Killarney Forestry Rally which takes place in Castleisland on Sunday, February 19.

The event is the first round of the Irish Forestry Championships and is organised by Killarney and District Motor Club.

The Irish Community Air Ambulance was launched as Ireland’s first and only charity air ambulance in 2019.

The charity's resources were tasked to

1,000 incidents during 2022, many of which were road traffic incidents. The organisation works in partnership with the National Ambulance Service and was tasked to more than 110 emergencies in Kerry last year.

“We are honoured once again to be chosen by Killarney and District Motor Club as the beneficiary of the Killarney Forestry Rally," the CEO of the Irish Community Air Ambulance, Micheál Sheridan, said.

"We’re often called to road traffic inci-

dents and fundraising events like this help us to bring hope to people when time is critical.

"This year our focus is on expanding our network of volunteer critical care and advanced doctors into more communities across the country. We have seen just how important pre-hospital emergency care is when a person is critically ill or injured.

"It costs us €25,000 to establish a volunteer doctor in the community and €120,000 to put a new critical care response vehicle on the road. With your help we will be able to expand this service.”

For more information about the Irish Community Air Ambulance visit www. communityairambulance.ie.

Kerry Airport takes flight with new football club

Kerry Airport Ireland has been announced as the sponsor of the first-ever Kerry Football Club jersey ahead of the club's debut in the SSE Airtricity First Division.

The home kit, which is green with a white and gold trim and supplied by New Balance, was on the Kerry Airport runway today (Thursday) and is ready for take-off in the first home game next month. The two change kits, which will also feature Kerry Airport’s branding, will be available to purchase this month.

“The establishment of the new Kerry Football Club is a major milestone in the sporting history of the county,” John Mulhern, the CEO of Kerry Airport Ireland, said.

“At Kerry Airport, we recognise the crucial role that sport plays in bringing communities together either through playing, coaching or attending matches. Kerry

Football Club will elevate the profile of soccer in the county to a new level while giving talented players an opportunity to shine. We are proud to play our part and we are looking forward to working closely with Kerry FC in their efforts to reach the top ‘flight’ of the League of Ireland.” Kerry Football Club will play 36 games in the SSE Airtricity First Division with the opening fixture being at home against Cobh Ramblers at Mounthawk Park, Tralee, kicking-off at February 17. Season tickets remain on sale from www. kerryfc.com while individual match tickets will be going on sale in the coming weeks.

Kerry base confirmed for Rás Mumhan

Preliminary details of the Rás Mumhan have been announced by Cycling Munster.

The four-day international cycle race will, once again, be based at the Riverisland Hotel in Castleisland and will run from Good Friday until Easter Monday. The final route has not yet been revealed but it is expected to follow a similar path to the 2022 edition.

Last year, due to organisational difficulties, the Rás Mumhan committee asked

SPONSOR:

Football

local clubs to take charge of each day of the race.

Killarney Cycling Club hosted the Easter Saturday leg of the race, including managing the stage start in the town centre, the Category One mountain climb at Bealach Oisin Pass and the stage finish in Sneem.

“We are looking forward to seeing everyone at Easter and we wish all the riders the best of luck in their preparations for the event. Further details to follow as they are confirmed,” said Race Secretary Sinéad Moriarty.

Walk-in vaccination clinics

Cork Kerry Community Healthcare is advising that walk-in COVID-19 vaccination clinics are available this weekend.

The HSE strongly urges anyone who is due a booster, or who is unsure of their vaccine status, to check as soon as possible by contacting HSELive on 1800 700 700.

“This Bank Holiday weekend, wherever you are on your vaccination schedule - be it your second booster or a child's first vaccine - we would be delighted to see you," Dr Anne Sheahan, Area Director of Public Health for Cork and Kerry, said.

"It is a very safe vaccine and will offer added protection at a time when we are

seeing high levels of COVID-19. People can still become very sick with the infection and our best ammunition against COVID is vaccination.”

In Kerry the vaccination centre is located at Borg Warner, Monavalley, Tralee V92HT21.

6TH ANNIVERSARY

BARTLETT

In loving memory of Peggy Bartlett

Late of 32 St.Brendan’s Place, Killarney

Who died on 1st February 2017.

A light from our household is gone

A voice we loved is still

A place vacant in our home

That never can be filled.

Lonely is the home without you

Life to us is not the same

The entire world would be like heaven

If we could have you back again.

How dearly we loved you

And prayed you might live

But Jesus just beckoned

And we had to give.

God give us strenght to bear it

And courage to fight the blow

What it meant to lose you

God alone will ever know.

May the lord of love and mercy

Care for our dear mom Peggy

Who is gone but will never be forgotten

And bless with consolation

Those left to carry on.

You will always be with us in our hearts.

Sadly missed and lovingly remembered by your son David, daughters Majella, Noreen and Helene.

O St. Joseph, whose protection is so great, so strong, so prompt before the throne of God, I place in you all my interest and desires. O St. Joseph, do assist me by your powerful intercession, and obtain for me from your divine Son all spiritual blessings, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. So that, having engaged here below your heavenly power, I may offer my thanksgiving and homage to the most loving of Fathers. O, St. Joseph, I never weary contemplating you, and Jesus asleep in our arms; I dare not approach while He reposes near your heart. Press Him in my name and kiss His fine head for me and ask Him to return the kiss when I draw my dying breath. St. Joseph, Patron of departing souls pray for me. This prayer was found in the fiftieth year of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. In 1505 Who ever shall read this prayer or hear it or keep it about themselves, shall never die a sudden death, or be drowned, nor shall be burned in any fire or shall be overpowered in battle. Say for nine mornings for anything you desire. It has never been known to fail, so be sure you really want what you ask for. In thanks for request granted. M.D.

PRAYER TO ST. JOSEPH

In 1505 it was sent from the Pope to Emperor Charles when he was going into battle. Who ever shall read this prayer or hear it or keep it about themselves, shall never die a sudden death, or be drowned, nor shall be burned in any fire or shall be overpowered in battle. Say for nine mornings for anything you desire. It has never been known to fail, so be sure you really want what you ask for. In thanks for request granted. B.D.

ANOTHER CHANCE

Fringe players to stake their claim for spot on starting 15

Kerry are likely to draw from the same group of players who lost to Donegal when they welcome Monaghan to Killarney on Sunday.

With 10 starters from last year’s All-Ireland final absent, the Kingdom suffered a narrow one-point defeat in Páirc Mac Chumhaill last weekend. Securing two points this time out is of great importance, but Jack O’Connor is not expected to rush back players who are currently resting, like David Clifford, Paudie Clifford or Shane Ryan. Others, including Seán O’Shea, Paul Geaney, Stephen O’Brien and Gavin White, are recuperating from injury.

NATIONAL LEAGUE: DIV 1

Kerry v Monaghan

Sunday at 1.30pm

Fitzgerald Stadium

White, for one, will not be available until the latter stages of the league at the earliest.

It will, therefore, be left to the panel who travelled to Ulster to get the job done against Monaghan – allowing for one or two adjustments here or there.

Kerry’s upcoming opponents are also seeking their first win of the season following their two-point defeat to Armagh

in Castleblayney (1-12 to 1-14). Conor McCarthy top-scored for the home team (1-2 including a goal from the penalty spot) with Mícheál Brannigan (0-4) and Stephen O’Hanlon (0-2) also to the fore. An avoidable Armagh goal proved to be the difference between the teams in the end. Experienced goalkeeper Rory Beggan won’t have been too keen to see the replay of that one.

Star player Conor McManus was not available for selection against Armagh. It seems as though the 35-year-old, who will need hip surgery after his playing career is over, is being minded for the early stages of the league.

Kerry have won their last three matches against Monaghan. Last year in Inniskeen, goals by David Clifford (two) and Seán O’Shea helped them to a 3-14 to 1-12 victory.

Interestingly, Kerry and Monaghan are the two longest-standing teams in Division 1 of the National Football League. Monaghan have been in the top flight since 2015, while Kerry have managed to retain their D1 status since 2003. A home win on Sunday will go some way towards improving that record.

Throw-in at the Fitzgerald Stadium is at 1.30pm. The match will be shown live on TG4.

EFFORT: Substitute Donal O'Sullivan shoots for the posts during Kerry's narrow defeat to Donegal. O'Sullivan is one of a number of players looking to nail down a prominent role.

Kerry misfire up in blustery Ballybofey

No joy in Round 1 as Kerry rue missed chances

NATIONAL LEAGUE DIVISION 1

Donegal 0-13 | Kerry 1-9 BALLYBOFEY

Donegal captain Paddy McBrearty kicked a last-minute winner as an experimental Kerry team failed to capitalise on a good start in what was their first league match of the 2023 season. The Kingdom flew out of the traps in Ballybofey on Sunday last and they led by three at the interval but they appeared to run out of steam in the second half. Conditions were difficult to say the least and the wind was against the away team, but even so Jack O’Connor will not be best pleased with his side’s profligacy in front of the posts. Kerry only scored three times in the entirety of the second period. That wastefulness wasn’t the only thing that Jack was unhappy with. The Kerry boss was left fuming when Caolan McColgan’s first-half shot was dubiously flagged as a point. The Dromid native confronted the match officials after the final whistle, clearly indicating that he felt the shot was well wide. Whatever the primary reason for the defeat was, the result was a disappointing one for the All-Ireland champions. It is still the very early stages of the league but with fixtures against Mayo, Tyrone and Armagh around the corner, Monaghan at home on Sunday is already looking like a must-win game.

x

Now Kerry led by six points (1-6 to 0-3) with 24 minutes on the clock. Kerry had been minding the ball very well up this point but some sloppy turnovers began to creep into their game. Donegal made the most of them with O’Donnell, McColgan (the disputed point) and Johnny McGroddy all scoring to halve the deficit before the break.

The second half is best forgotten from a Kerry standpoint. It was the 49th minute before they scored again –Paul Murphy with another cracker –and that point levelled matters after four straight points had given Donegal the lead.

Jack O’Connor had told us that the team would be training through the league and to expect side effects. The way Kerry faded would certainly suggest that their conditioning isn’t where they need to it be just yet.

Kerry were down 10 starters from last year’s All-Ireland final including star forwards David Clifford, Seán O’Shea and Paudie Clifford and they found it tough to pick up scores in the opening exchanges. They managed just one point (by Darragh Roche) from their first six shots at goal.

Things began to turn for them in the 13th minute when Paul Murphy sent over a beauty from long range via both post and crossbar. And seconds later, Kerry were three points clear.

From the resulting kickout, Donegal went short and as they played the ball around the back, keeper Shaun Patton strayed from his goal to make an angle for his teammates. Dara Moynihan pushed up on full back Brendan McCole and he was rewarded for his hard work when he poked the ball free before slotting home from 15 metres out.

Points by Tom O’Sullivan, Killian Spillane and Roche (two) followed, with just a solitary strike by Conor O’Donnell in response for the home team.

Ruairí Murphy and Donal Down O’Sullivan came off the bench and both scored to keep their side in contention. O’Sullivan had an opportunity to give Kerry the lead in stoppage time but his strike held up in the wind. And so it was left to Donegal’s captain, a man who had been held scoreless by Jason Foley up to the final attack, to win it for the men from Tír Chonaill. He played a one-two and came around on the loop before swinging over an inspirational point that just about crept over the bar.

It was the perfect start for new manager Paddy Carr. For Jack O’Connor and Kerry, it was a point lost.

KERRY: S Murphy; G O’Sullivan, J Foley, T O’Sullivan (0-1); M Breen, T Morley, P Murphy (0-2); J Barry, BD O’Sullivan; M Burns, D Moynihan (1-0), A Spillane; T Brosnan, D Roche (0-3), K Spillane (0-1). Subs: R Murphy (0-1) for A Spillane; P Warren for Breen; D O’Sullivan (0-1) for Burns; S Okunbor for BD O’Sullivan; G Horan for Moynihan.

DONEGAL: S Patton (0-1, 45); M Curran; B McCole, C Ward; C McColgan (0-3), S McMenamin, M O’Reilly; C McGonagle, J McGee; J McGroddy (0-1), D Ó Baoill (0-2), C O’Donnell (0-3); H McFadden, P McBrearty (01), J Brennan (0-1). Subs: L McGlynn (0-1) for McFadden; J McKelvey for McGroddy.

MVP: Lorraine Scanlon of Kerry scored a goal and was named Player of the Game.

Two wins from two for Kerry ladies

The Kerry ladies are flying high in Division 1 of the National League following another hard-fought win on the road.

The Kingdom downed Waterford in Round 1 thanks to a late winner by Danielle O’Leary and they had a similarly tight victory over Mayo on Saturday last, albeit in very different circumstances.

This time the visitors built up a sixpoint lead - thanks in the main to brilliant goals by Síofra O’Shea, Player of the Game Lorraine Scanlon and Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh – before the opposition mounted a spirited fightback. Mayo trailed by six following Ní Mhuircheartaigh’s strike but they rattled off five straight scores to cut the deficit

Lakers march on at Cougars’ expense

The Scotts Lakers continued their run of dominance over Killarney rivals the Cougars with an 85-66 victory at the Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre on Saturday.

In spite of the form books, the large crowd in attendance were treated to a fiercely competitive game, particularly in the first half when the winless Cougars really put it up to their neighbours.

Emilio Strijdhaftig and Darren Townes helped them to build up a nine-point lead early in the second quarter and it appeared as though a shock was on the cards. However, not too dissimilar to what happened in the reverse fixtures, the Lakers steadily found their feet and with star attraction Jack Ferguson steering their attack, they eventually found their footing.

Things were still neck and neck heading into the final quarter but the home team took over down the stretch. Important baskets by Aron Walker pushed the Lakers out into the lead and the biggest cheer of the evening was reserved for Lakers’ youngster Jack O’Sullivan when he executed an incredible dunk.

The Lakers are on the road this Saturday as they face the Southern Conference leaders the Limerick Sport Eagles in the UL Arena. Tip-off is at 7pm.

Meanwhile, the Cougars are at home to SETU Carlow at 7.15pm.

In the Women’s National League, St Paul’s now find themselves top of the Southern Conference following a blowout 102-41 win over the Swords Thunder. They welcome SETU Carlow to the Killarney Sports and Leisure this Saturday at 4.30pm.

to just a single point. Thankfully for Declan Quill and Darragh Long’s side, they saw it out to the buzzer and left the Connacht Centre of Excellence with two points in the bag. Final score: Mayo 0-13 Kerry 3-5.

Kerry are now joint top of Division 1 alongside Galway, who are the only other team in the top tier with a 100% record. Cork are a point behind in third following their draw with Waterford. Up next for Kerry is a home match against bottom-of-the-table Donegal on Saturday. Throw-in at Austin Stack Park is at 12 noon.

Classy new Kerry away jersey goes on sale today

After getting a warm reception upon its launch on Saturday last, the new Kerry away jersey is now available to purchase at the Kerry GAA Store and online.

The classy navy and white design has received rave reviews from supporters, with some even suggesting that it might be the best Kerry shirt in years.

The O’Neills kit, which also includes navy shorts and socks, was worn for the first time in last Sunday’s National League opener against Donegal in Ballybofey. Jack O’Connor’s men were de-

feated by a late point by the home team but nevertheless the striking new strip gave Kerry fans something to be happy about.

Like the home jersey that came out last year, the design draws on an element from the Kerry crest, in this instance the stag which features subtly in the form of a blue stencil.

The ‘alternative’ shirt has been available on pre-sale all week but today (Friday) marks the first day that it can be bought in-store. Prices vary according to size and fit. Size 3-4 (kids) is €48 with adult tight fit shirts available for €80.

Lee signs deal with sportswear giants Puma

Killarney high jumper Jordan Lee has penned a sponsorship deal with global sportswear company Puma.

Lee, who is currently preparing for the World Para Athletics Championships which take place in Paris later this year, announced the deal via his Instagram page.

Speaking to the Killarney Advertiser, the Killarney Valley AC man said he is “honoured to officially be part of the Puma family”.

“To be a sponsored professional athlete for a huge international company like Puma is an absolute privilege,” Lee said.

Cronin’s title fight to be streamed at Jimmy’s

Kevin Cronin is aiming to make history on Saturday night by becoming the first Kerry man to win a professional boxing title – and you can watch it all at Jimmy Brien’s Bar in Killarney.

The Milltown native will fight for the vacant Boxing Union of Ireland Celtic light-heavyweight title when he goes up against Limerick man Jamie Morrissey at the Europa Hotel in Belfast. The eightround bout is expected to start at some

time between 8pm and 10pm. Cronin and Morrissey are both undefeated in the professional ranks (Cronin is 5-0 and Morrissey is 4-0) so a high-quality encounter is on the cards. Morrissey is looking to become the first two-weight champion having already secured the super middleweight belt. For those who cannot make it to Belfast or to Jimmy Brien’s, the fight will be streamed live on Cronin’s Facebook page.

“Only a handful of international athletes in Ireland have ever achieved a deal as big as this one, and to be an athlete from Killarney in County Kerry receiving this deal, it’s amazing and very humbling.”

Lee joins some of the best-known athletes in the world on Puma’s books. Sprint legend Usain Bolt, Brazilian soccer star Neymar and Formula 1 icon Lewis Hamilton are also sponsored by Puma.

Okwute makes loan switch to Northern Premier

Killarney man Daniel Okwute has been allowed to join Northern Premier League side Warrington Rylands on loan from Stockport County.

The former Killarney Celtic and Kerry striker made his debut for the nonleague club in their 1-0 victory over Liversedge on Saturday.

When Okwute signed for Stockport in 2022 he was flagged as one for the future. He will be hoping that his loan spell with Rylands will accelerate his development and help him make the breakthrough for his parent club upon his return.

The Bruach na hAbhann native represented the Kerry U19s before making the move cross-channel, scoring 19 goals in 19 appearances in his final season in the underage League of Ireland.

GAA’s ‘cash only’ policy is ridiculous

Eamonn Fitzgerald says the GAA’s ‘cash only’ policy is leaving older fans out in the cold

It’s ridiculous and it still goes on. Will the GAA ever learn to listen to its most dedicated and reliable supporters, who arrive at venues and they cannot get in because those at the turnstiles will not accept cash.

No blame to those manning the turnstiles. They have to follow the instructions of the match organisers. On Saturday last, the message was bellowed loud and clear: “no cash”. This time it was the Munster Colleges Council personnel who were insensitive to the needs of an important cohort of their customers.

It was a beautiful, sunny day and supporters gathered at Lewis Road for the eagerly awaited Munster Colleges football semi-final between great Kerry rivals, St Brendan’s and Mercy Mounthawk. This was a very good semi-final, a welcome tonic for GAA aficionados. The bad weather in recent weeks had caused postponements. As expected, the majority of supporters were students, all tech savvy. All they needed was their phones. However, there were also quite a number of regular supporters of more mature years. Some were well up on the digital age, but not all, and they were very disgruntled and infuriated by the “no cash” announcement by the official. Admission was only a fiver and great value, but cash was a no-no at the turnstiles. Why did the pre-match publicity not contain that information? I have highlighted this dilemma in this column in the past.

Of course, the GAA must move with the digital times we live in, but there are people who are not in the tapping brigade. More and more people tap for purchases. Nothing wrong with that, but there are still people who are uncomfortable with modern technology. They were born and bred into the cash age. Some don’t even trust the banks with their money. Would you expect them to scan an icon on the stadium wall?

The solution is straightforward. Advertise in pre-match publicity if the game is all-ticket, to be pre-purchased at the local Supervalu store, Daly's or wherever. Why not have one gate for cash only? Or do what worked well in the past: park a ticket van outside the ground where people can purchase on the day.

I have seen the most ardent of support-

ers well advanced in years refused entry. Cash was not acceptable. Some have health issues so it is not always advisable to purchase tickets well in advance of the game. Bad weather on match-day often leads to a change of plans.

The disenfranchised on such occasions are the diehard supporters who have attended most local games throughout their lives. They are the ones who will be at so many games where there is only a handful of supporters present. Eaten bread is soon forgotten. One should never forget who dug the well, and if the well goes dry…? This group of loyal supporters deserve better recognition and accommodation of their needs.

What’s the story for Kerry v Monaghan on Sunday next at the Fitzgerald Stadium? Note the early throw-in time of 1.30pm.

ENJOYABLE GAME

The cash situation apart, well done to the council on the staging of a thoroughly enjoyable game. It was a splendid, sunny day and the pitch was magnificent, defying the ravages of the past number of weeks.

St Brendan’s powered their way to their way to the Corn Uí Mhuirí final against Rochestown with a 2-16 to 0-13 win over Mercy Mounthawk.

This big nine-point win over their Kerry rivals was clearcut after a storming second half, but the Sem had to recover from a very unsure start.

A contributary factor was that St Brendan’s had played their quarter-final

just three days previously in Banteer and tiredness was evident. They sought a postponement of the game for a week to help in their recovery. The Tralee college didn’t oblige.

The crucial score came just before halftime when the sides were level on six points each. Callum Cronin nipped in very sprightly to pounce on a poor pass back to the Mounthawk keeper. Cronin slid a morale-boosting goal into an empty net.

Jamie Moynihan added a point and The Sem led 1-7 to 0—6 at the interval, after playing second fiddle for most of that half.

Rob Monaghan, the powerful Mounthawk midfielder, had caused St Brendan’s most trouble. That turnaround sealed the fate of the Tralee college. Instead of being at least level at half-time they now faced a four-point deficit.

St Brendan’s were fortunate to be ahead, but they excelled in the second half. When the very impressive Monaghan tired, Brendan’s took over and the forwards fashioned some great scores. Good to see multi-sport star Luke Crowley back in action after a long layoff, but he was very rusty in the first half giving up several turnovers to Stacks full back Jack Murphy. He drifted too far outfield to be effective. He came into his own in the second half, though. He kicked seven points, three from play, as the Sem went on a scoring spree.

Leading 1-13 to 0-10, Cronin then struck for his second goal in the 49th minute.

The Glenflesk man showed his splendid poaching instincts and there was no way back for Mounthawk.

Shay O’Meara, the experienced Dr Crokes keeper, was his usual confident self and he made one great save Rob Monaghan. His kickout strategy was excellent, varying between long and short.

I was impressed by the full back line of Lynches (unrelated) and James Williams. It was good to see the latter back in action after spending much of last year recovering from a cruciate injury. He put in a great shift.

A lot was expected of the Tralee corner forward Paddy Lane. The Stacks man scored three goals in his previous game, but Michael Lynch excelled, confining their danger man to a single point. The half back line improved after an uncertain start.

Once the Sem midfielders Ryan and Kelliher got to grips with the dominance of Monaghan, the impressive Moynihans (Timmie from Spa and Jamie from Glenflesk) showed the way to what was a decisive win.

FINAL

Next up is the Munster final versus St Francis College, Rochestown on February 11th. The big difference now is that the traditional dominance of Colaiste Chríost Rí has waned as new colleges have taken over.

The venue for the Corn Uí Mhuirí final has not been finalised as this column goes to print.

COFFEY ALL-IRELAND WINNERS

The late, great Garry McMahon loved to sing and most of all he loved to sing about tradition and the psyche of Kerry players. Most GAA players never get to win a county title in any age group. A minority achieve that at senior level, but only a tiny minority will play for Kerry. The ultimate

goal for the regular club player is to win an All-Ireland with his/her club. In recent weeks we have enjoyed the celebrations in Rathmore and in Fossa. Of course, you need some elite players to win the Holy Grail, but the regular player also plays a big part in winning.

Imagine still playing for your club at 37 years of age, losing more games than you won with your club, and then in January 2023 the sacred steps on the Hogan Stand are mounted. The All-Ireland trophy comes home to your club, and you are central to that. Unbelievable, but so welcome in the twilight of your career. The Coffey clan go back a long ways with Fossa and with Kerry. Fintan Coffey had his hands full in that first half of the recent All-Ireland club final with Gareth Devlin, Stewartstown's most dangerous forward. However, the long serving Fossa full- back had a stormer in the second half, no doubt bringing great joy to his parents Ursula and Kieran Coffey. His father Kieran played for decades with Fossa. His grandfather Danny kept the club alive when wins were few and it must have been the prayers of Fr Galvin, the much loved parish priest, who kept the ship afloat, while others kept bailing.

The Coffey DNA is that of a winner. Kieran's first cousin, the late Denis Coffey, scored many a goal and none more telling than in the All-Ireland senior club final when East Kerry won the inaugural title in 1971. The powerful full forward line of Donal Kavanagh, Mick Gleeson and D Coff all rattled the net in the first half. Go further back to the great Kevin Coffey, the outstanding defender who won All-Irelands with Kerry in the 1950s. Go further back still to Mike Coffey, an All-Ireland winner with Kerry in 1926 when they won their seventh title. The win was important, but more important still is that love of the green and gold geansaí overcame split loyalties. On that team were arch political foes Con Brosnan and John Joe Sheehy, leaders of the Free Staters and the IRA respectively, and certainly not respectfully, in the Civil War which had ended in 1923.

The bitterness was suspended and they put those strong allegiances aside to wear the Kerry jersey with great results and it was all done in the name of the game.

The great Paul Russell of Mangerton View was also on that team. They travelled to America in 1927 and on that trip was Mike Coffey.

37-year-old Fintan Coffey will cherish that 2022 All-Ireland club medal with Fossa. That's the tradition Garry McMahon captured in 'Kerry's Green and Gold'. Will Fossa be heading to the USA? N'fheadar?

Killarney Athletic

MUNSTER JUNIOR CUP LAST 32: Seniors made the trip to Waterford to play the Current FAI Junior Cup holders in the last 32 of the Munster Junior Cup. Our boys started the game well with both teams finding their feet and a great chance by Roko curling a shot over the keeper only for it to come off the bar. Two more opportunities came our way but both shots were easily gathered by the villa keeper. Unfortunately for us when Villa got their first real opportunity they took it with a good strike from outside the box coming off the shin of Cian Tobin lifted the ball over the arms of our keeper Gary Sugrue who had a great game overall today. More bad luck for Matthew Horgan on games outside the county as he had to come off in the 37th min with an injury for the second time this season. Not long after some good play between Brendan Moloney and Shane Lynch got Eoin Moynihan free in the box only for his shot to miss the far post with the keeper beaten. Villa then showed their quality with a quick counter and clinical finishing to put them two up going into the break. Athletic made one change at the half time Ryan O’Carroll coming on for Dara O’Shea. The second half saw us pushing hard to get back into the game, which allowed Villa more opportunities at goal which Gary and our defence dealt with excellently, Brendan, Roko, Shane and Eoin all had strikes at goal only for either a Villa defender or Keeper to get something in the way. A few good balls over the top with players running from deep worked well only for the assistant flagging for offside when not even one Villa player was looking for one. Then with 5 mins left as we pushed on Villa broke on goal Shane Doolan attempted a challenge he brought down his man just outside the box, the referee pointed to the spot, and Villa dealt the final blow. Well done to Villa a just about deserved victory but a flattering score line. Our boys should hold their heads high after today as not many teams in the country could compete with this Villa team.

Mastergeeha

PREMIER LEAGUE. Mastergeeha 4-0 Killarney Celtic. On a glorious Saturday morning, we entertained 3rd place Killarney Celtic in our 5th game of the premier league. Early pressure from Celtic put us on the back foot and it took strong Roan Guerin headers to repel the danger while captain Jonah Casey then made a super save. We gradually got into the game with Conn Deally excelling at centre half. Alan O’Leary up top came close on 3 separate occasions to giving us the lead. However, on 28 mins, trojan work from Fabian Lorkowski in retrieving possession saw him feed David Maj who in turn found Roan Guerin and his shot put us up 1-0. Celtic responded but outstanding defence from Mark Larkin and Conor Finnegan kept them at bay. Half time: Mastergeeha 1-0 Killarney Celtic. The 2nd half saw us keep the pressure on. A Liam O’Mahony corner was headed off the line and Jack Murphy saw his shot blocked. But then a low cross from the right was swept home by Fabian to put us 2 up. Cillian Moynihan on his return from injury showed no ill effects as he and Conn Deally helped repel any attacks while Darragh Forde got stuck in at the heart of midfield. Goal No 3 arrived as Briain Maguire setup Roan for another powerful strike. The boys kept powering on with Michael O’Riordan forceful down the right and goal number 4 duly cane when Daragh Keane powered home a left footer from another Briain assist. Many thanks to ref Willie Gorman and our opponents Killarney Celtic who despite things going against them, never gave up in a game that was played in a sporting fashion.

COIRN UI MHUIRI: St Brendan’s College will look to complete back to back Coirn UI Mhuiri victories, when they face Francis College, Rochestown in the final on Saturday, February 11. Glenflesk’s representatives on the team again shone brightly today. Cian Lynch, as Captain and full back, led the team superbly, with a brilliant block in the first half and a super catch the highlights. John Kelliher came up big in the second half, as the Tralee side threatened to get back in the game. His solo score with a fine left foot finish after a powerful run helped change the momentum of the game. Jamie Moyni-

hans passing and running game was also pivitol in the victory, while also contributing a brilliant point in the first half. Up front, Callum Cronin and Luke Crowley were the main scoring threats, with Cronin clinically finishing to the net twice, with Crowley providing the killer pass for the second goal, while also kicking over seven outstanding points. Eoghan Kelly came on late and helped see out the victory. Congratulations to the lads, and good luck in the final. Report by Michael Healy.

NATIONAL LEAGUE: Kerry started their League campaign with an unlucky one point defeat away to Donegal today. Darragh Roche continued his outstanding form from the McGrath Cup. His first impact was making a great catch, when under pressure from two Donegal defenders. He then was sharp to get to a ball that hit the crossbar, beating his marker to it, and firing over. A second point followed as he once again brushed off his marker and split the posts with his left foot. His third point was another beauty, collecting the ball one handed, and dropping it to his foot in an instant, curling it over perfectly. He also added another assist, and his movement opened space for others. Donegals dominance in the second half meant he saw very little ball. Kerry will try and make amends against Monaghan in the next round. Well done to Darragh, who was unquestionably, one of Kerry’s best today. Report by Michael Healy.
