UK specialists train fire crews to prevent future Park devastation
A specialist UK company spent the week training local fire staff to help prevent a repeat of the 2021 devastating fire in Killarney National Park.
| By Sean MoriartyStaff within Killarney National Park began training with Rob Gazzard who is a chartered forester and surveyor with international experience in forestry, contingency planning, incident management and wildfires.
The National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) purchased vehicles fitted with water pumps, and with the latest technology including thermal surveillance, drone operator and helicopter on standby, it will ensure the response from emergency crews is immediate.
In April 2021, fires tore through Killarney National Park causing extensive damage. Up to one third of the Park - approx. 2,500 hectares – was scorched with flora and fauna wiped out. Some fires came as close as 10 metres to a church and school in the Black Valley area. Fire crews from five different districts concentrated on the area which also saw properties under threat. The Park was designated a UNESCO Biosphere Re-
serve in 1982 and forms part of a Special Area of Conservation. It is of high ecological value because of the quality, diversity, and extensiveness of many of its habitats and the wide variety of species that they accommodate. It also has the most extensive covering of native forest remaining in Ireland. “We are liaising with four international groups on best practices, early smoke and fire detection appliances capable of spotting a fire outbreak, will ensure our staff and Kerry County Council Fire Services will be able to respond and prevent a repeat of the 2021 devastation in the Park, when over 2,500 hectares were destroyed," said Regional Manager of the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) Southern Division, Eamonn Meskell.
"NPWS management and staff meet regularly with the fire services and a detailed safety plan of the Park is ready.
“A helicopter company is on retainer, in the event of another fire it will carry specialised Bambi buckets, capable of delivering water for aerial firefighting.”
Brian taking on toughest foot race on Earth
| By Michelle CreanWith searing temperatures of up to 50 degrees in the Sahara Desert - local fitness expert Brian Foley is planning to take on what is regarded as the toughest foot race on Earth.
Brian, who runs Activate Fitness on the Ballycasheen Road, is currently putting in hours of gruelling training every week for the six day 251km Marathon Des Sables event.
He's heading off on April 20, starting the ultra marathon the next day. This multi-day race is held every year in southern Morocco with the longest single stage 91km.
"It’s roughly six marathons in six days in
the desert, around 50° heat at the height of the day and around 5° at night," Brian, who writes a regular fitness column for the Killarney Advertiser, said. The race is self supported, so he'll be carrying everything except water which is supplied.
"It's a big undertaking. I plan to have around 10kg weight on my back."
Brian set up 'Marathons for the Mind' as he wanted to help raise awareness of mental health issues and to raise funds for the vital services that some amazing mental health charities provide. So far he has raised just under €2,000 of his €5,000 target.
"The whole idea came about eight years ago when I was chatting to a girl in Australia. I did an ultramarathon on the Great Ocean Road. Then between lockdowns
and having our first child last year it spurred me on a bit."
January 2022 was the beginning of the gruelling plan as Brian registered for the challenge.
"I threw my hat in the ring then but it's the last five to six months that the training ramped up. I'm doing nearly 200kms a week on The Kerry Way, Rossbeigh and Banna."
He also explained that he's building his time up to four to five hours a day in the sauna to help get his body ready for the temperature in the desert.
"This might be my last big adventure," Brian, who is due his second child this August with his wife Roisin, added.
They're holding a table quiz next Wednesday night in the Brehon at 7.30pm.
It’s €40 for a table of 4 with plenty of spot prizes on the night.

€96k funding to fix Board of Works Road
€96,000 has been allocated to fix Beaufort's Board of Works Road which is in a bad need of repair with works due to start after the May Bank Holiday weekend.
The news was this week welcomed by local Fianna Fáil Councillor, Michael Cahill who says locals "have endured their fair share of hardship over many years with numerous water breaks, water outages and a road that has been in a shocking state of repair".
“These funds are extremely welcome and are to be supported by additional significant funding from Uisce Éireann to reinstate all sections of roadway on the Board of Works Road in Beaufort affected by the essential pipe laying works carried out there," Councillor Cahill, speaking at a recent meeting of Kerry County Council, said.
"I fought long and hard to improve the Beaufort water supply, which was badly needed, but also to ensure that the road surface would be repaired to a proper standard. The Board of Works road,
Beaufort is by far the busiest county road in Kerry. It is the most populated county road, it carries the most traffic, it is the main thoroughfare between Killarney and Dromid, Waterville, Glencar, Beaufort etc, and for most people travelling to the Gap at Dunloe and the McGillycuddy Reeks," he said.
“I am now delighted to report that my efforts are being rewarded and, not alone will the water supply locally be top class, but the road surface will now also be brought up to a proper standard.”
known to participants, they remain a closely guarded secret until Wednesday night’s RTÉ broadcast.
“This festival received 1,000 entries and on the day 34 finalists were shown,” explained Glen’s father Brian.
“The event was recorded for TV. There is a strict media blackout on proceedings, however, it will be televised so tune in to find out how things went for these creative and brave Killarney locals.”
‘Ireland's Young Filmmaker of the Year Awards 2023’ will air at 7pm next Wednesday night when Stephen Byrne and Gemma Bradley host the 27th annual ceremony for young budding filmmakers between the ages of seven and 18.
Buskers
face €75 fine as new bye-laws come into force
Buskers in Killarney are now restricted to just two hours playing time after new bye-laws were passed last week.
Street performers will be required to limit their amplifiers to 80 decibels and will face a fine of €75 or prosecution in the District Court for not adhering to strict new rules.
The new busking bye-laws were adopted by the Killarney Municipal District last week after months of talks and debates. Buskers will require a street permit too. Town centre residents had raised con-
cerns that busking went on too late into the night and that late night busking attracted an unruly crowd.
"Busking is more than welcome in Killarney. It adds massively to our town. But where there are problems they are severe and what is not welcome is foul language, one-track music, and staying in the same place all day," Mayor of Killarney, Niall Kelleher, said.
Killarney Municipal District officials examined similar laws in places like Ennis and Galway before making a decision on local laws.

Killarney students honoured at Certified Irish Angus Awards
Three students from St Brigid's were celebrated at the annual Certified Irish Angus Schools competition in Croke Park.
Katie Donoghue, Abbie Daly, and Alanna Brady attended the prestigious grand final in the Hogan Suite on Friday after successfully completing a research project and rearing five Angus calves for 18 months.
The Certified Irish Angus Schools’ Competition in association with ABP and Kepak is an initiative that challenges students to rear five Irish Angus Cross calves for 18 months until their slaughter which aids their Leaving Certificate Agricultural Science curriculum. It aims to promote the Certified Irish Angus brand while communicating the care and attention required to produce quality beef for consumers.
The Killarney students researched methods of 'Improving Farm Outcomes Through Education'. The study focused on how local farmers can effectively apply educational resources from industry experts to their own farms. By sharing their knowledge at

local discussion groups, the farmers were able to review new farming practices and share honest assessments with their peers. The groups targeted were experienced and young farmers which proved to be vital to successful discussions around environmental beef farming practices. Currently, farming industry experts are judging this year’s 42 shortlisted projects and will select five finalists. The five schools that best demonstrate an understanding of the project along with innovative ideas will be announced in September and will receive their calves at the National Ploughing Championships in September 2023. Each of the finalists will receive the financial benefit involved in the selling of the animals to the processors on completion of the project which amounted to an average €7,500. The winning students also receive an additional grant of €2,000 for their further education.
During its early morning rounds on Tuesday, a bin lorry and its crew picked up a number of large rubbish bins on Main St. The bins were tipped in to the compactor section of the truck. By the time the crew arrived at the top of New Street a crew member spotted a person's head in the compactor section and raised the alarm. The man who slept in the bin overnight was found in the middle of all the rubbish. Emergency Services were called to the scene at about 8am and the man was extracted and taken to University Hospital Kerry with chest injuries.
“He was a lucky man,” the Emergency Services told the Killarney Advertiser.
“The crew operator saw him in the back of the lorry and raised the alarm. He was very lucky, this was one of the older type rubbish compactors that compacts after every 10th or so bin is placed in the truck. Modern trucks compact on every tip.”
The Killarney Advertiser understands that this is the second such incident in the town in recent weeks. Jarveys operating near the HaHa found a different man asleep in a bin in a nearby laneway in March.

Water Rescue's equipment and kind-hearted staff from a local hotel are ready to help out.
The Muckross Park Hotel and Spa will be hosting a fundraising evening in aid of the important local Killarney rescue group on April 14 in Colgans Bar.
Killarney Water Rescue is an entire volunteer-based service that operates 24/7, 365 days a year and supports other clubs and services such as Kerry Mountain Rescue, Irish Underwater Search and Recovery Council, National Parks and Wildlife Service, and the Irish Coast Guard.
Founded 25 years ago, some of their equipment is ageing and in dire need of replacement, Brian Murphy, Sales and Marketing Executive at The Muckross Park Hotel & Spa, explained.
"Killarney Water Rescue rely on generous donations from the public throughout the year via street collections, bag packing, and fundraising events, which have
all been severely impacted by the effects of COVID-19. Currently, they are working hard to replace three of their longest-serving rescue boats with a total cost of €70,978.34 including new engines.
"The additional €9,021.66 is needed for the replacement of their diver's full-face mask and communications units so that they can continue assisting with underwater searches," he said.
"Replacing this equipment will help them ensure their future survival and continue to serve the local community and emergency services."
By donating to the Killarney Water Rescue, you can help support and make a real difference to the organisation. Donations can be made via GoFundMe: 'Fundraising Evening - Killarney Water Rescue'.
"Any donation will help make an impact. Thanks in advance for your contribution to this cause. Together, we can help these amazing people save more lives by donating to their organisation.
"Help us to help them, and continue their work in the search and recovery of those lost in our inland lakes, rivers, and at sea."

The plan, launched at the National Gallery of Ireland, aims to enable the creative potential of every child and young person. The boys met with Minister for Education Norma Foley TD, Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media Catherine Martin TD, Minister for Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth Roderic O'Gorman TD, and they were also interviewed by a panel of young people.
Cailean and his mom Tara Donoghue Laing were asked to attend because Tara is a creative facilitator for Kerry Local Creative Youth Partnership (LCYP) which was established in 2019 under a pilot initiative to support and enhance child and youth creativity in Kerry.
Kerry LCYP is a collaboration between creative practitioners, cultural organisations and resources, Kerry Education and
Training Board, Kerry County Council, Kerry Education Centre, Kerry County Childcare Committee, Schools (Primary and Post Primary), Youth Officers, youth service providers and family resource centres.
The objective is to provide out of school creative activities for children and young people that complement and work with formal school settings in a non-mainstream manner.
Cailean and Tara created 'Through Our Eyes', a photography project undertaken during lockdown.
A book launch of their work and an exhibition will take place at the County Museum Tralee on April 22.
"Cailean was very proud to see his photography on the walls of the National Gallery of Ireland," Tara told the Killarney Advertiser.
"I was also extremely proud as a mother and as a creative facilitator to see projects that we created in Kerry being appreciated by the ministers in Dublin.
"It is a huge achievement for the children for their creativity to be recognised and I hope it will continue to motivate their photography further."

OsKaRs night a huge success as students reach for the stars!
It was a night full of glitz and glam as over 2000 guests attended St Francis Special School's ‘A Night at the OsKaRs' in the INEC.
| By Sean MoriartyThe school teamed up with Kevin Rowe Events on Thursday night as a fundraiser for services for the students whose motto is 'Reach for the Stars'.
The ambitious project involved students, staff and supporters who come together to make seven short films based on famous movies with teachers, SNAs, the secretary, house staff, bus escorts, parents, family and members of the children’s therapy team.
They each competed for titles like Best Actor, Best Actress and Best Supporting Actor during the night's event.
The judging panel included former GAA star and TV pundit Pat Spillane, the famous dancing Garda Mary Gardiner, radio DJ Brendan Fuller and comedian Bernard Casey.
A four-person committee was led by principal Keith O Brolacháin.
“The Ring of Kerry Cycle race is one of our biggest fundraisers,” said committee member Fiona Carroll.
“I was involved in that and straight afterwards Keith approached me with this idea. My first thought was no way, this can’t work, but he had done something similar at his previous school in Cobh. It was an amazing journey and an amazing night . The kids from the school stole the show with their performance of ‘The Greatest Showman’ – a story about people hidden from society and very fitting with our motto ‘Reach for the Stars’.

Final send off is bittersweet for Proinsias
Friday was a day of very mixed emotions for retiring school principal Proinsias Mac Curtain as the school community said a fond farewell.
| By Michelle CreanHe got a wonderful send off in Gaelscoil Faithleann on Friday morning last with cake, music, speeches and some tears.
All the children sat in the hall and sang some traditional Irish songs inspired by the John Spillane collection. His wife Karen and children Ruadhán, Meadhbh, and Cormac, were guests of honour.
Local principals including Colm Ó Súilleabháin from St Oliver’s NS, Paul Horan from Holy Family NS Rathmore, Mary Brosnan from The Mon, Brian O'Sullivan from Scoil Bhride Loreto, Alison Coffey of Loughquittane NS, Maria Breen, Tiernaboul NS, and Conor Gleeson from Lissivigeen NS, attended to say farewell to a great friend.
"Local musicians who play with Proinsias on a regular basis turned up and this was a surprise," his colleague Lisa Ní Iar-
laithe told the Killarney Advertiser.
"The school staff and Seán Ó Luanaigh, the Chair of the Board of Management, were all in attendance too."
Every child in the school drew a portrait of their príomhoide and they were all hung in the hall as well as some photos of Proinsias from when he was a small school boy right up to the present day.
"He really enjoyed looking at these surprises on the day. The children presented him with a beautiful piece of slate with a poem close to his heart, a huge card signed by all the children and staff and a cake with the school crest and a feadóg mhór and music notes."
Later that evening the Board of Management treated Proinsias to an evening in the Great Southern Killarney.
"It was a bittersweet occasion," Lisa, who is taking over as principal of the school, added.

Did you know that best-selling crime author John Grisham was once a lawyer?
| By Susan KealyHe wrote The Rainmaker between meetings and court hearings, and then The Firm, A Time to Kill and a whole host of other law-related crime books which became Hollywood blockbusters.
It makes sense that he wrote about what he knew, what fascinated him, what he cared about. And yet, his extreme success did not come from his legal training or even his ability to fight for justice for his clients. It came from his capacity to weave a narrative and to write so articulately - the law simply fuelled his inspiration.
Choosing a career can be tough and terrifying work. The pressure to get it right, to discover your gifts, to judge the jobs-market, to make money, to do what you enjoy; even Grisham would struggle to tie all these plot lines together. The tools we used to choose careers 30 years ago, before constant technological innovation, offshoring, global dependencies, mass migration, remote working and a whole host of other features of the modern world existed, cannot be applied to today.
As a career coach, I would argue that there is no “safe” job anymore and there is no “perfect” career for anyone. Yet there is a direction that may suit a person more than another, a field that might allow for someone to play to their gifts, to make the best contribution they can make. That direction does not have an end-point, and the journey of career exploration is a constant state of learn-
ing, course correcting and acquiring different experiences and skills that allow for a unique offering to the world. I work together with my clients to help them find this direction, to discern whether Due West would be more compatible with who they are than North, not to help them know whether they’ll hit America or the Spice Islands – the adventure is their own. The tools we use to orient the process are coaching and psychometrics; they tell us about the Strengths, Higher purpose, Interests, Non-negotiables and Environmental needs of a person – about their SHINE. Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, had studied to become an engineer. He used engineering principles and thought processes to create the Kindle and the Amazon platform. In 2009 he gave a talk to engineering students at Princeton and he told them to try to figure out what they were interested in, not what they thought would make them money. “It’s very difficult to chase after a wave,” he said. "What’s better is to place yourself in the middle of something you genuinely love and wait for the wave to come find you."

around the restaurant.
The complete culinary experience finished with homemade Petit Fours, served with teas and coffee. Cormac then went out to the dining room to chat to the guests about the meal and the produce which was used.
He said that "great dishes start with great flavours".
With new chef Cormac Vesey at the helm, the cooking is as skilful as it is tantalising, offering patrons an elegant yet uncomplicated dining experience.
The main hotel restaurant, now called ‘Herbert’s’, is taking a new direction; the menu retains all of the best of the sea and the land and offers gourmet cuisine but without any fussy embellishments. Cormac’s focus on food provenance and seasonal ingredients lies at the heart of everything he does and is the cornerstone of his cooking.
Recently the hotel hosted an eightcourse tasting menu ‘A Taste of Caher-
nane’ in Herbert’s Restaurant.
The fabulous dining experience saw guests enjoying a spectacular menu which was inspired by an old 1960s menu which Cormac found in the old store kitchen. This then inspired the team to look to the past for future culinary inspiration.
The evening provided the kitchen team with the opportunity to showcase the new culinary offering and gave diners the chance to experience the dishes in an elegant and relaxed setting. Each of the courses were beautifully presented and executed and ultimately each dish was a
The original 1960s menu inspired such new dishes as organic salmon with nori and pickled cucumber, asparagus cream soup with a delicate and perfectly formed quail’s egg, lobster au gratin with Kells Bay Dilisk Cheddar and charred leak. The meat dish was just a joy to behold, noisettes of lamb were served with a tarragon jus and delicious Pommes Dauphine. The tropical fruit parfait with roast pineapple and coconut sorbet provided a refreshing taste revival before diners enjoyed a chocolate marquise with burnt apple gel and calvados ice cream. This was reminiscent of old fashioned ‘fizzy apples’ and was the focus of lots of chat
"It’s my job to make the ingredients sing; it’s not my job to over complicate the best that Mother Nature has already provided. I don’t subscribe into the idea that there has to be all of these extra flourishes such as gels and foams to make a dish impressive, great dishes don’t need that. I like to start from the beginning, and to look and see what’s in season. What’s growing now is going to be the very, very best thing on your plate. It’s incredible how something as simple as a spring cabbage or a carrot can become something extraordinary with careful and thoughtful cooking. Ingredients don’t need to be pimped up and made into something they aren’t, they just need to be complemented and matched carefully and thoughtfully.”

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS
European Health Insurance Card
When travelling abroad we should be prepared for all eventualities.
It is very important, if you are holidaying in another EU country, that you bring your European Health Insurance Card in case you or your family need to access medical care.
What is the European Health Insurance Card?
The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) allows you to access public healthcare in another EU/EEA state for free or at a reduced rate. You can use it when you are travelling abroad or when you are staying temporarily in another EU State. It is recommended that you always carry your EHIC when you are abroad. An EHIC does not replace travel insurance.
How long does the card last?
It lasts for up to four years. At the end of that period you will need to renew your card. You can renew it online.
Can I get a European Health Insurance Card?
You can only apply for an European Health Insurance Card if you live in Ireland or if you live in another European Union (EU), European Economic Area (EEA) Member State, or Switzerland. If you live in Ireland but you are linked to another EU/EEA State's Social Security System, contact the health authorities in that country for more information. If you live in Northern Ireland but are employed in Ireland, you can get an Irish-issued EHIC.
Does the card cover the whole family? Each family member needs their own card. You can apply for the whole family on one application form.
Where can I use it?
You can use your European Health Insurance Card in any European Union or European Economic Area (EEA) country and in Switzerland. Currently, the EEA comprises the 27 Member States of the European Union together with Iceland, Norway and Liechtenstein. As Andorra and Monaco are not part of the EU or EEA, your EHIC is not accepted there. Likewise, if you are travelling outside the EU/EEA. In both cases you should get private health insurance instead.
What does the EHIC cover?
It covers free or reduced cost public healthcare in any of the EU and EEA countries, a temporary stay of up to three months, pre-existing medical conditions, routine maternity care - as long as you’re not going there to give birth. If you’re a student studying abroad, you’ll be covered for up to an academic year. It does not cover private healthcare, the cost to fly you back to Ireland, ongoing or permanent healthcare or medical expenses if your reason for going abroad is to have treatment.
Will I have to pay anything for healthcare with my EHIC?
In some EU Member States you may have to make some payment towards the cost of the services you receive, just as people in that State do. This is called a 'patient co-payment' or 'patient share'. You will not receive a refund for this or for private healthcare.
How can I get a refund from the HSE if I paid for healthcare while abroad?
You may be able to get a refund if you had to pay because you did not have your EHIC card with you or the healthcare providers charged you by mistake. Apply for a refund by email. Send your receipts to E126.Refunds@hse.ie. The HSE will send an E126 form to the health authorities in the other State to find out if you used a public health service and how much of a refund is due. When the HSE receive the completed E126 form from the other State, the HSE can see if a refund is due to you or not.
What if I don't have my EHIC before I travel?
If you don't have your European Health Insurance Card for any reason, you can get a Temporary Replacement Certificate. This certificate gives you the same entitlement as the card, but for a shorter period. You can apply online for this certificate, in-person or by post to your Local Health Office. You can only receive a Temporary Replacement Certificate for yourself.
How much does a European Health Insurance Card cost?
There is no fee for the European Health Insurance Card or for a Temporary Replacement Certificate. Renewing a European Health Insurance Card is also free. How do I apply?
You complete an application form and send it to your Local Health Office. You can download the form or pick one up from your local Citizens Information Centre. If you have a medical card or Drug Payment Scheme card, you can apply online.
If you already had an EHIC but it has expired, you can renew it online if you have your old EHIC number and your PPS number, provided that your address has not changed.
For anyone needing information, advice or have an advocacy issue, you can call a member of the local Citizens Information team in Kerry on 0818 07 7860, they will be happy to assist and make an appointment if necessary. The offices are staffed from Monday to Friday from 10am to 4pm. Alternatively you can email on tralee@citinfo.ie or log on to www. citizensinformation.ie for further information.

5,600 flights were late departing Dublin Airport
A staggering 5,600 flights were late departing Dublin Airport in March.
New figures revealed by the Dublin Airport Authority show that 2.48 million people passed through Ireland’s busiest airport last month.
This was 30,000 passengers higher than the number which went through in the previous busiest March in 2019 and 33% higher than in March 2022. This is the third consecutive month of record passenger numbers at Dublin. The airport hosted 18,605 flights. However, only 13,004 left the departures gate on time meaning, on average, 746,480 passengers experienced some sort of a delay at the airport in March.
Some of these were as a result of heavy snowfall in March while more were caused by illegal drone activity in the area.
However, figures for Cork Airport, the second busiest airport in the country, show that 85 percent of its 2,669 flights departed on time in the same period.
There have been calls that Dublin Airport should share some of its flights with regional airports in an effort to reduce delays there and to increase productivity in the smaller airports like Kerry, Cork and Shannon.
This time last year Dublin suffered serious delays at its security bays.
At the time North Kerry councillor Jimmy Moloney called for more flights to
operate in and out of Kerry Airport in an effort to reduce congestion and this week's figures back up his previous calls.
"Our airport has come on leaps and bounds, they installed a new scanning system which I went through the other week. The management is great at securing new routes, and we've recently had new hospitality facilities open up as well,” he said last April.
"Particularly for people in Munster and in South Leinster this airport is a great

option, with how much it costs to travel to Dublin these days, not counting an overnight stay if it is needed, you are saving yourself a load of hassle and there isn't much difference in price.”
Kerry Airport recently announced two new routes to France. It is also expected to announce more new routes shortly.
It currently has nine routes over the summer period, serving Dublin, Alicante, Faro, London Luton and Stansted, Frankfurt and Manchester.
Fun walk to help support young people
In excess of 100 people will take to the road to walk the 8km picturesque trip from The Red Fox Inn to St Finian's Holy Well in Glenbeigh this Easter Monday.
The day will be in support of Killorglin Family Resource Centre and the therapies provided for children and young people including play therapy, counselling, CBT and art therapy. Killorglin Family Resource Centre provided in excess of
500 hours of therapies to children and young people in 2022 with minimum funding.
"It is very relevant that this year's walk is in aid of support for young people given the traditional healing powers of the well," Margaret Wrenn, FRC Manager, said.
"We are very grateful to St Finians Well committee for choosing the family resource centre this year and the support of the local community for organising this
event."
The walk to the well will start from The Red Fox at 1pm, with registration open from 12 noon. A bus will be provided for anyone wishing to attend the Mass at 2pm at the well who is finding the walk difficult. This event is also an ideal opportunity for running groups to participate in. There will be music, children's activities, grand raffle and refreshments at The Red Fox after the walk. Registration is €10 per adult, children free.
Work will begin at 6am when the giant pan and all the utensils are brought to the town square as part of the annual ritual which is celebrating 50 years this year. Then around mid-morning following a parade, volunteers will break the eggs and the pan - which has a large telephone pole as a handle - will be heated up. Two pounds of salt, a pound of pepper and a bucket of herbs will then be added.
As part of getting the recipe just right, a taster will be assigned to make sure the omelette has enough salt and pepper. There could be up to 5,000 waiting in the crowd watching on who will be handed plates of the omelette with French bread.
The team of volunteers - members of the Confrérie Mondiale des Chevaliers de l’Omelette Géante de Bessières - the World Brotherhood of the Knights of the Giant Omelet, will be dressed in yolk-coloured yellow shirts and bright white pants.
According to local legend this fun tradition began when Napoleon and his army were travelling near Bessières. It's belived that a local innkeeper cooked him such a delicious scrambled egg that the next day, the Little Corporal requested that all the eggs in the village be gathered and made into a whopping omelette for his soldiers.
Another version is that local teenagers came together and cooked a giant omelette close to the Tarn River and fed the village.

DNA results revealed in missing Maddie case
The girl who claimed to be missing British girl Madeleine McCann has this week received DNA results back.
It turns out that Julia Faustyna, who also goes by the name Julia Wandelt, is one hundred percent Polish and the DNA results showed no connection to the missing youngster.
21-year-old Julia had claimed that she believed she was the missing British girl whose disappearance in Praia da Luz,
Portugal has baffled the world for the last 15 years.
"Julia’s test results are back. We finally know the reality!" Fia Johansson, who is acting on Julia's behalf, said on Monday night.
“The test results revealed that she is 100% of Polish heart, with negligible influence from Lithuania, and Russia. The DNA test results did not show any connection to British or even German roots.”
Rare shark found on beach
A 14ft smalltooth sand tiger sharkrarely seen by humans - was found on the shoreline by a tourist at the weekend.
It's believed that the strange discovery in Wexford is the first time that type of shark was ever seen on Irish shores. And it's also the second such discovery in this part of the world as a similar species washed up on the south English coast just two weeks ago.
The female shark - also known as Odontaspis ferox normally lives in deep water over 100m offshore.
Shark biologist and Assistant professor in Trinity’s School of Natural Sciences, Dr Nicholas Payne, was notified about the
discovery when a Swiss tourist sent him with photos via email.
“I couldn’t believe it when I got this random email from Martin, because as soon as I saw the photos he sent I knew we had to get down there urgently to sample this rare animal," Dr Nicholas Payne said.
“Unfortunately, another of this species washed up on the south English coast just two weeks ago; we all thought that was very strange at the time given the northerly location, but to see a second one here so soon after is a little concerning. We will now do a number of tests to try to learn what might have caused this to happen and also to learn more about this species in general.”
The Office of Public Works (OPW), which manages the UNESCO World Heritage site, stated that, as always, access will be dependent on favourable weather, sea and island conditions.
“I am very pleased to announce the reopening to visitors of this unique world heritage site for the summer season," Patrick O’Donovan TD, Minister of State with responsibility for the OPW, said.
“Sceilg Mhichíl is one of Ireland’s most iconic heritage sites and plays an important role in the local tourism economy, which we are proud to support through this and other OPW sites in the county.”
Referencing the site’s participation in a global initiative to safeguard cultural landmarks from the effects of climate change, Minister O’Donovan said Sceilg Mhichíl is "undoubtedly one of the most challenging sites in the care of the OPW".
"Our team carries out tremendous work against the severe challenges of its location, isolation and unpredictable weather conditions to ensure safe access for visitors and the protection of the island’s heritage.”
Sceilg Mhichíl is one of 10 sites worldwide participating in the Preserving Legacies: A Future For Our Past project.
The project will equip communities
worldwide with the tools to accurately anticipate and assess worsening and future climate impacts on culture, and help them turn that scientific knowledge into action to safeguard sites.
The OPW, National Monuments Service (NMS) and National Park and Wildlife Service (NPWS) will develop the scientific knowledge and technical training of site management teams and the local community at Sceilg Mhichíl to develop place and people-based climate change adaptation plans for the islands.
“As custodians of this World Heritage property we in the OPW, alongside NMS and NPWS, are privileged to work with others around the globe in this important project, strengthening our engagement with the community of south Kerry in terms of the island’s value and significance.”
All prospective visitors are encouraged to view the Sceilg Mhichíl Safety Video prior to booking a visit to the island to get an idea of what to expect.
For example, a visit to the monastery on the island will entail a climb of 618 steps, ascending over 600 ft. (180 metres). It is a demanding climb and any person with health issues should consider carefully their own physical limitations before exploring this part of the site.
Advance booking is essential and details can be found at https://heritageireland.ie/places-to-visit/Sceilg Mhichíl/
Julia Wandelt and Madeleine McCann.MTU students host a meal fit for the Kingdom
It was a challenging event but local university students pulled it off by cooking up a meal fit for the kingdom!
Second Year students of the Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Food Business Innovation at the Munster Technological University
Kerry Campus hosted ‘Kerry’s Best Pop Up’ at 10 Bridge Street in Killorglin.
Under the guidance of their lecturer Dan Browne, and in collaboration with 10 Bridge Street’s chef Craig Lynch, they created a four course tasting menu. The pop-up concept forms an integral part of the student's programme module 'Innovation in Food Production Service'.
Using the best of ingredients grown, or produced in Kerry, the menu highlighted the amazing produce of the Kingdom and the creativity of MTU’s students past and present, as Craig the executive chef is also a past graduate of MTU. Local producer's ingredients that featured on the menu were Annascaul Black Pudding, Fenit Vegetables, Eve’s Leaves, Poppadum Farms, Dingle Goats Cheese, Dingle Ale, Maharees Carrots, Cahillane's Beef, Simply Devine Preserves.
The BA in Food Business Innovation is an innovative programme at the MTU Kerry Campus and was developed to address the needs of an ever-changing food in-
dustry.
One of the key elements of this programme is to be cutting edge bringing the learning to life and industry relevant. Events like this give the students first hand exposure to real life working experiences. This event brought the students to the Firies Food Hub where they carried out the preparation for the event and then to 10 Bridge Street where 70 guests enjoyed a meal fit for the Kingdom.
Chef and lecturer Dan Browne who mentored the students was very proud of how the students managed the task that was set for them saying:
“The students were really enthusiastic and excited by the experience and learnt so much from it. I would like to thank Cliodhna Foley, Craig Lynch and the entire team at Number 10 Bridge Street for making this possible. Here's to the first of many Pop Ups so watch this space. The food industry has so much to offer and is ever changing and the BA in Food Business Innovation programme intends to ensure that its graduates are at the cutting edge and ready for whatever comes their way."
New Hyundai IONIQ 6 now available in Kerry
The all new Hyundai IONIQ 6 has arrived in Kerry.
The new offering from the Korean manufacturer is now on show and available for test drive at Adam’s of Tralee - the county’s main Hyundai dealer.
Launched under a shroud of secrecy last week, the new car was unveiled in Dublin last Thursday. The first of the new cars arrived in Kerry very early the same morning but remained undercover outside the Tralee dealership until the launch was completed in Dublin.
Already the Hyundai IONIQ 6 is among the finalists for 2023 World Car of the Year, 2023 World Electric Vehicle and 2023 World Car Design of the Year, respectively. IONIQ 6 is based on the same Electric-Global Modular Platform
(E-GMP) as the 2022 World Car of the Year, IONIQ 5, and has attracted a hugely positive response since it was announced as a concept last year.
The IONIQ 6 is designed to go further, with faster charging and sleeker styling.
The car is equipped with a 77 kWh battery available with two powertrains (rearwheel drive and all-wheel drive) offering up to 540 kilometres of range. Advanced technology allows for ultra-fast charging - just 18 minutes for a full charge.
“Driving on electric is easier than ever,” said a Hyundai spokesperson. Electric vehicles are growing in popularity in Kerry. So far this year 144 electric cars have been sold in the county compared to 117 for the entirety of 2022.

Don't accept unnecessary risk
I always advocate for long-term investing, but this buy-and-hold narrative can be misinterpreted as 'do absolutely nothing'.
I disagree with this take, and if your financial advisor has made no changes to your portfolio over the last few years, you should probably go shopping for a new one.
We had the most predictable and forecast interest rate hiking cycle over the last 18 months. If your portfolio was left sitting in bonds when negative asymmetric returns were clearly on the table (only downside), then you need to be asking some questions. There is a difference between patience and incompetence. Unfortunately, over the short term, the two are indistinguishable.
If your financial advisor hasn't made any changes to your portfolio because they believe that 'time in the market' is all that matters, that's perfectly fine. That is an investment approach that has been successful for so many. But why are you paying them to sit on your money when

CHECK YOUR EXPOSURE
Just because you're a long-term investor doesn't mean you need to blindly reach for returns. Tactically adjusting your portfolio to mitigate against obvious risks on the table is an important part of the investment process.
With that said, growing expectations around a recession should not be seen as a 'sell everything' event. You simply need to reassess where your exposure lies. Ensure you are invested in companies with;
Strong 'Net Margins': Improving revenue is great, but it needs to make the business more profitable. Far too many companies are spending more than they are making, all in the name of customer acquisition. This 'growth at any cost' tactic was rewarded when money was free, but with credit standards tightening and interest rates jumping higher, the endless growth narrative is about to catch up on

ANIMALS
ANIMALS: HUG: Homes for Unwanted Greyhounds. For further details please contact us on 087 6932090 or email info@homesforunwantedgreyhounds.ie
ANIMALS: KLAWS (Kenmare and Locality Animal Welfare Society) We have several
many of these 'high growth' names.
High 'Free Cash Flow' Margins: In its simplest terms, free cash flow is just the cash that can be taken from a business without disrupting the operations of the business. Importantly, this number factors in the cost of growth. So, if a business is growing and has a good FCF margin, it should pique your interest.
Stable Return on Invested Capital (ROIC): ROIC is just the profits a business makes on the money invested into it. The premise is pretty straightforward. You want to invest in companies with a history of using their equity to generate more profits. Looking at companies with sky-high ROIC can be compelling, but what you want to see is a consistent history of stable ROIC over time. Ignore the once-off data; always analyse the trend. You can find all this info on any company by simply typing the company's name into sites like stratosphere.io. Be selective in the risks you take.

For years, the lake was where
Your soul felt most at peace
Your heart was most content when there with the fish and the geese
But then, your spirit came to rest
Where angels chose to roam
And once equipped with ten pound test
You made yourself at home.
The sky became your deep blue sea
The clouds became your shore
And there, for all eternity
You sat with friends galore
Each angel was a fisherman
Who had traded his pole
For golden wings and a game plan
At Heaven’s Fishing Hole.
The tales you told about each catch Its stature and its girth
Will live in memories unmatched
As days pass on this earth
Until we meet again, one day
Upon God’s golden sand
We’ll picture you, no other way But with a pole in hand.

Still we have so many memories
Of the one we loved so much.
Your memory is our keepsake
With which we will never part
God has you in his keeping
We have you in our hearts.
Always loved and remembered by your loving family.
Even though we cannot speak anymore Our voices are always there Because every night before we sleep We have you in our prayers.

Late of 24 Ardshanavooly, Killarney
Who passed away on 3rd April 2006.
A bouquet of beautiful memories
Sprayed with a million tears
Wishing God could have spared you
If just for a few more years.
It does not take a special day
For us to think of you
Each mass we hear, each prayer we say
Is offered up for you.
We cannot bring the old days back
When we were all together
The family chain is broken now
But memories live forever.
May he rest in peace dear Jesus
In Thy Heavenly home above
With the Sacred Heart of Jesus
In His own eternal love.
Along the road to yesterday
That leads us straight to you
Are memories of happy days
Together we once knew.
A silent grief that’s in our hearts
No human eye can trace
For many a broken heart is hid
Beneath a smiling face.

O St. Joseph, whose protection is so great, so strong, so prompt before the throne of God, I place in you all my interest and desires. O St. Joseph, do assist me by your powerful intercession, and obtain for me from your divine Son all spiritual blessings, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. So that, having engaged here below your heavenly power, I may offer my thanksgiving and homage to the most loving of Fathers. O, St. Joseph, I never weary contemplating you, and Jesus asleep in our arms; I dare not approach while He reposes near your heart. Press Him in my name and kiss His fine head for me and ask Him to return the kiss when I draw my dying breath. St. Joseph, Patron of departing souls pray for me. This prayer was found in the fiftieth year of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. In 1505 it was sent from the Pope to Emperor Charles when he was going into battle. Who ever shall read this prayer or hear it or keep it about themselves, shall never die a sudden death, or be drowned, nor shall be burned in any fire or shall be overpowered in battle. Say for nine mornings for anything you desire. It has never been known to fail, so be sure you really want what you ask for. In thanks for request granted. BL
Blessed Anthony, in spite of many difficulties you were enabled by the Holy Spirit to discover your place in God’s plan and to use your gifts and talents in making society a better and happier place for all. Implore the Lord Jesus to grant me suitable employment which may obtain for me and mine a decent livelihood and at the same time be able to live truly human and Christian lives and to be of real service to all people. Amen. BL
Oh, Jesus full of grace and charity, victim for sinners, so impelled by your love of us that you willed to die on the cross. I humbly entreat Thee to glorify in heaven and on earth, the servant of God. Padre Pio of Pietrelcina, who generously participated in Your sufferings, who loved Thee so much and laboured so faithfully for the glory of your heavenly Father and for the good of souls.
With confidence, I beseech Thee to grant me, through his intercession, the grace of....which I ardently desire. 3 times; Glory be to the Father...

Home crowd hoping for historic first win
League of Ireland new boys Kerry aiming to put unwanted record to bed
of the season.
Another capacity crowd will pack into Mounthawk Park in Tralee this evening as Kerry FC try once again to get up and running in their maiden League of Ireland First Division campaign.
The green and white faithful are still waiting to savour that first ever win at this level following six defeats and a solitary draw in the opening seven matches
Most recently, an impressive brace by Joshua Giurgi helped Longford Town to a 2-0 victory over Kerry last weekend. Giurgi’s first came at the end of some neat interplay and an incisive dribble, while the second arrived in the 89th minute when his long-range curler evaded Wayne Guthrie in the Kerry goal.
Seánie McGrath, Leo Gaxha and Nathan Gleeson all went close for the visitors when the tie was at 1-0 but it wasn’t to be.
That most recent loss leaves Billy Dennehy’s side rooted to the bottom of the table on one point, two behind Treaty United (against whom they earned their only point to date) and six behind to-
night’s opponents, Finn Harps. Harps have a record of one win, three draws and three defeats and they’ll be hoping to bounce back from their last outing when they fell to a demoralising 7-1 drubbing at the hands of Waterford. Their only victory to date came against Longford on March 18 when Ryan Rainey’s penalty proved decisive in a one-goal game. For those who won’t be attending tonight’s match, it will be streamed live by
LOI TV at a cost of €5.
Elsewhere in the First Division, league leaders Galway United will be seeking to maintain their 100% record when they travel cross-country to take on Wexford; second place Cobh Ramblers host Waterford; and third place Bray Wanderers welcome Athlone Town to the Carlisle Grounds.
Kerry’s fellow strugglers Treaty are at home to Longford Town. All matches kick off at 7.45pm
CHALLENGE: Longford's Joshua Giurgi and Shane Guthrie of Kerry challenge for a header in last weekend's match at Bishopsgate.

It’s an exciting time of year for local cycling fans as they gear up for Rás Mumhan, which takes place around the southwest of Ireland from April 7-10.
The 51st edition of the event will pit the elite of Irish cycling against one another and an international field, teeing up what promises to be an exhilarating few days of cycling. Excitement is already building for the final stage in Killorglin, a spiritual heartland of cycling that has produced former Rás winners Mike Breen, John Mangan and Gene Mangan. Lindsay Watson, last year’s winner, will be looking to retain his title, and he certainly has the right tools in his belt with a very strong Ulster squad consisting of current national cyclocross champion Dean Harvey and the ever-present Matthew Teggart.
Going toe-to-toe with Watson will be
the 2022 Rás Tailtean champion Daire Feeley, the Roscommon man riding with All Human Velo Revolution alongside Mitchell McLaughlin, fresh from the professional circuit, with previous winner of Rás Mumhan Mark Dowling.
Rás Maigheo winner Matthew Devins,
supported again by previous winner Conor Henebry and the likes of Seán Hahessy, could provide us all with the upset at the bookies.
The emergence of young Seth Dunwoody from Armagh, riding for the Ireland Junior team, is also noteworthy. He
has had brilliant results on the continent despite still only being a first year junior. Liam O’Brien of Fermoy will be hoping for a repeat of last year’s edition when the Irish juniors took stages in style. The seven raiding international teams are sure to have a say in matters in quiet preparation for the ambush.
Most riders will have experience of previous editions of Kerry Group Rás Mumhan, with the addition this year of the stage three from Millstreet. This stage will include over 1,700m in elevation and will no doubt test the endurance of even the best-prepared rider.
The final stage in Killorglin takes in Beaufort before moving on to the Donal McKenna circuit with 10 laps of the traditional route, up the town centre to the finish line.
In a fitting tribute to Pádraig Harnett, sports journalist in Kerry who has sadly passed away during the year, Pádraig’s wife Maura Daly will be at hand to present the yellow jersey in Killorglin where her husband did so many interviews and live reports down through the years.
Pádraig was a champion for so called fringe sports in a region where Gaelic games take precedence. He was the conduit for media and exposure for cycling and his absence this year will truly be felt.
DEFENDING CHAMPION: Linday Watson, winner of Rás Mumhan in 2022. ACTION: A shot from last year's Stage 2 finish into Sneem, which was won by Conor Murnane of UCD.Wins for Legion and Crokes in County League
Legion made it two from two in the County League with a hardearned win over Austin Stacks on Saturday last.
A stiff breeze backing the Tralee side saw them lead 0-9 to 0-4 at half-time in Derreen but a Darragh Lyne goal early in the second half laid the foundations for a 1-10 to 0-12 win. James O’Donoghue kicked 0-4 for the hosts with Finbarr Murphy adding 0-3. Elsewhere in Division 1, Kilcummin and Dingle had to make do with a point apiece after a hard-fought encounter in Kilcummin (0-10 to 0-10). Dingle started brightly and lead by three points early on but scores from Gary O’Leary and Mark O'Shea brought the home team level. Kilcummin trailed by a point at half-time but scores by Philip O’Leary and Paul O’Shea ensured that the club from East Kerry picked up their first point of the season. Meanwhile, Dr Crokes secured a comfortable 10-point win in Gneeveguilla (1-14 to 0-7). Points by David Shaw (03) and Harry Potts (0-2) meant Crokes led by three at the break.
JOD: Legion veteran James O'Donoghue kicked four points against Austin Stacks.
Crokes took control in the second half with Mark O’Shea very strong at midfield, kicking two great points. Billy Courtney also caught the eye by scoring 0-4 (two from play). The full back line of Brian Fitzgerald, Mark Fitzgerald and David Naughton were outstanding with Brian O’Shea in goals very composed.
Youngster Alex Hennigan got a great individual goal at the end when he intercepted a loose pass before carrying it 50 yards and coolly slotting under the opposition keeper.
All-Ireland intermediate champions Rathmore had a good win away to Spa (3-14 to 3-11); Milltown/Castlemaine beat Castleisland Desmonds by a point (0-12 to 0-11); and Kerins O’Rahillys beat Ballymac by a goal (2-12 to 1-12). In Division 2, Glenflesk continued their winning ways by defeating Glenbeigh-Glencar. Ian Roche scored the decisive point for the home side. Firies played out a draw against Templenoe.
| Woods unsure if this Masters is his last
Tiger Woods says he’s unsure whether this year’s Masters will be the last of his career.
This will be Woods’ 25th appearance at the major but he told reporters this week that the thought of this being the last time competing at Augusta National had crossed his mind.
“I don’t know how many more I have in me. So just to be able to appreciate the time that I have here and cherish the memories,” the as the 47-year-old said.
Woods made a dramatic comeback to golf at last year’s event after a serious car crash in 2021 which caused severe injuries to his leg. He said that amputation had been “on the table” following the incident but he eventually recovered

| Scottish police investigating headbutt at women’s Old Firm game
Police are investigating after Rangers assistant coach Craig McPherson appeared to headbutt Celtic Women’s head coach Fran Alonso at the end of the Scottish Women’s Premier League (SWPL) match between the two fierce rivals, which resulted in a 1-1 draw on Monday.
Video of the incident shows McPherson approaching Alonso from behind after the final whistle and knocking him in the head.
Players and coaching staff had to pull McPherson away from Alonso, who had been shaking hands with players after the game.
Without naming those involved, Police Scotland said it had launched a probe into the events at the stadium.

A video of Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce competing in a parents’ race at her son’s sports day has gone viral, for exactly the reason you might think.
The accomplished sprinter was taking no prisoners in the race, streaking clear of the competition, leaving the other parents in her dust.
The 36-year-old, who is the third fastest woman of all time, commented: “Every point counts.”

Mayo, Dublin, Cavan and Sligo were centre stage last weekend, capturing the National League titles. Now the race is on in earnest for the big prizes: the Sam Maguire and the Tailteann Cup.
The former has been well treasured and celebrated in Kerry after their narrow but deserved win over Galway in 2022. Sam has been on tour at all kinds of occasions throughout the county, but Kerry now face competition from several counties. The league revealed that the main dangers to Kerry retaining the title of All Ireland champions 2023 will come from Dublin, Mayo, Galway and Derry. Also hopeful of success will be Tyrone and Armagh. Cork are improving but are not realistic contenders at this stage.
How prepared are Kerry for such oppositions? They were extremely fortunate to win in 2022. A relatively average team depended on the unbelievable last minute free converted by Seánie O’Shea to stave off Dublin in the semi-final and really had to depend on Footballer of the Year, David Clifford, to outscore Shane Walsh in a memorable contest between two great players, before Sam came home.
FRINGE PLAYERS
Club commitments, particularly by players from Fossa and Rathmore, and the need to give sufficient time to injured players to recover from long-term injuries forced the Kerry management team of Micheál Quirke, Diarmuid Murphy. Paddy Tally and the Boss, Jack, to try out fringe players in the league.
Three wins at home and four away defeats in the very competitive Division 1 meant the threat of relegation raised its head.
Most important of all for Jack O’Connor was to see if they could strengthen last year’s team. Recycling the old will not suffice.
When the celebrations on winning the 2022 title eased off a little, I predicted that last year’s win would not be replicated in 2023 unless there were changes, not just in personnel. But more so in game plans and tactics.
POSSIBLE TEAM
Shane Ryan will be at number 1 with Shane Murphy providing excellent cover.
Jason Foley is also a certainty at full back and will need to be on top of his game to deal with threats from the likes of Brian Hurley, Damian Comer
The league revealed that the main dangers to Kerry are Dublin, Mayo, Galway and Derry.
Jack must make some changes
and, most difficult of all, Con O’Callaghan from Dublin.
Tom O’Sullivan got a roasting from Shane Walsh in last year’s final but he is an accomplished player, always comfortable going forward and a regular scorer. Graham O’Sullivan grasped the opportunity to star last year at the expense of Dan O’Donoghue and Dylan Casey. No changes predicted in this year’s full back line.
Tadhg Morley did a great job last year, shoring up the centre of defence and preventing opposition flyers coming off the shoulder. He hasn’t shown great form this year but is still the best prospect at 6, especially with Mike Breen spending so much time off injured.
Gavin White played no football after that serious knee injury in the 2022 final but after surgery he worked tremendously hard through the winter and spring to get back. He proved his class in his first game back versus Armagh. A certainty at wing back.
Not so fortunate has been Brian Ó Beaglaoich. He still has not come back from injury but will be available within a few weeks. Paul Murphy has been the obvious replacement during the league and certainly did not let the team down. Pa Warren is further down the list of options.
Midfield is a minefield for Kerry going forward. David Moran has retired after a wonderful career. His aerial dominance for the goalkeeper’s long kickout will be sorely missed. Na Gaeil clubmates Jack Barry and Diarmuid O’Connor do not inspire confidence and are barely adequate in defence of the title.
Barry Dan O’Sullivan has performed well in the league games and will be a realistic challenger. The former UCD player and now Dingle vet is the most likely change for midfield.
Is there any other midfielder in the county to claim a midfield spot? No real possibility has emerged. Stefan Okunbor is too injury prone. Joe O’Connor has been bedeviled by injuries.
Midfield can be bypassed quite often in the modern game and teams can get away with average midfielders compensated with help from the wing backs and wing forwards. If Jack adapts the Kerry game accordingly, Shane Ryan will be
given the safer option to go short with the kickouts very often. That calls for very alert defenders and will not work effectively if the opposition presses up on the short kickout.
I expect that Jack will adapt the Kerry game by effectively using a wing back and a wing forward to act as third and fourth assistive midfielders. Gavin White’s electrifying upfield bursts will be utilised.
The Kerry boss may well go back to the very successful role that Paul Galvin played in the past. Smaller in stature than the typical 6-foot-plus midfielder, Galvin sat in under midfield and excelled in hoovering up dirty ball. Will Dara Moynihan get this role? He was so unlucky to lose out in the 2022 final injuring himself during the Tuesday night training session just days before the final. Adrian Spillane would be down my list of preferences.
BUILDING
That’s the foundation and the outer walls of the house that Jack is building but it is the forwards who win matches. The Clifford brothers, David and Paudie, along with Seánie O’Shea are certainties and there are plenty of choices to supplement that trio.
My choice would be to play two big men in the full forward line. Why? The best player in the country is going to be double marked so the more room he has the better. He is a very big boy, well able to take care of himself. Mortally strong, he can make room for himself to score with
that trademark high kick where defenders cannot get close to block down. He is rarely blocked down. He has a vast array of skills; without him on the ball as often as possible Kerry’s opportunities to rack up a winning score are minimised.
You want your best man, your best scorer in the scoring zone and not 50 meters from goal battling for possession.
Put Seánie O’Shea alongside David. Big, strong and a great kicker, use him inside. He must be on the team for his impeccable free taking. We wouldn’t have been in last year’s final only for him. Nevertheless, he had a poor final and his weakness was exposed. He is dead paced and doesn’t have the take-off speed so necessary in Gaelic football. A winning centre back in the opposition coming up field will expose O’Shea. He has not the legs for that role. In particular, Galway would thrive on getting their numbers 3 and 6 scything through the middle. Kerry need to win possession outside and move the ball in quickly to the two big boys who are well able to claim marks, and a mark for each of them is a guaranteed point.
As for Paudie, he is indispensable in his play-anywhere role. Name him at 13 but let him rove anywhere and everywhere. He has the legs and the engine for AllStar displays.
THREE FORWARD SLOTS
Who gets the other three slots in the forwards? I felt that Stephen O’Brien was fortunate to make the starting 15 in last year’s final. But fair dues to him he
starred in that final and did a lot of the Paul Galvin style of hoovering. I recall one magnificent block down in the final when he thwarted a certain Galway goal. He hasn’t played since the final, though. He is one year older and unless he comes good within the next month he probably will not start.
Paul Geaney has also been out injured for a long spell and is in the wrong side of 30. He saw only minimal game-time at the end of the league. He will be in the mix, but having to play far out from goal in my preferred strategy would not suit him.Tony Brosnan has been given a lot of minutes during the league. At his best he is a proven scorer inside, but Jack has been using him more as a provider from the half forward position knowing that his long, accurate deliveries into the inside scorers bears fruit. However, he is a proven score getter and too often now he is too far out from goal to score. His clubmate Micheál Burns is also a grafter outside. Already mentioned is Dara Moynihan who has had a great league.
Darragh Roche was doing very well but a serious injury could rule him oyt of consideration for the early rounds of this championship. His best position is near to goal to capitalise on his accuracy. Ruairí Murphy was impressive in his limited appearances.
THE DUBS
Realistically, Dublin with Jack McCaffrey, James McCarthy, Paul Mannion, Paul Howard and Stephen Cluxton back will be hard to beat. They are still smarting after that last minute defeat in the 2022 semi-final. If that had gone to extra time, I am convinced that Dublin would have won and beaten Galway in the final. Galway and Mayo have staked strong claims for Sam in 2023. Kevin McStay will be more relieved than happy with silverware at Croke Park on Sunday last and has given Mayo newfound hope that this is the year that Sam will travel to Mayo after all the disappointments of countless All-Ireland finals thrown away. A new novena at Knock seems to be working so far.
The road opens for them on Sunday against Roscommon, their first step on the championship road.

Killarney Celtic 1 (Cian Hegarty, Eanna Hennigan). Athletic made the trip up to Celtic Park this evening in the Cup quarter final. Hard evening conditions wise much of the game was a battle for both teams. First half Athletic had a few half chances and to be fair so did Celtic . Athletic took the lead from some nice pressure in the corner where Eric Corcoran set up Cian Hegarty who finished in style to give Athletic the lead. Athletic with a little breeze pushed on in the second half and played with a higher intensity got a second goal from the spot where Eric Corcoran earned a peno and the impressive Eanna Hennigan stepped up and finished into the corner. Celtic as always fight till last play of the game and got one back towards the end of the game. good result from our young blues and great to see so many kids from Killarney playing soccer and enjoying themselves.

MEK Galaxy
GIRLS: U13 Girls Premier Division Shield
Result Iveragh Utd 3 MEK Galaxy 6. Scorers: Izzy Lyons 4, Ava Harty 2. POTM is Izzy Lyons.
U15 GIRLS PREMIER DIVISION: MEK Galaxy 0 Inter Kenmare 4. Our girls worked so hard today. Unfortunately, we had the bare 11, with even a few sick bodies willing to make an effort for their club. We had 3 new players up from the U14, who performed magnificently. Maggie Quirke was outstanding in goals, and a hard-working defence of Roisin, Sadhbh, Fiona & Alex kept a powerful Kenmare attack at bay for large periods of the game. In midfield, the girls closed down, harried and were always trying to be positive against the well-coached opposition. Kate, Holly, Sarah & Glasha were always on their toes. Up front, Yvonne & Anna had limited chances but never gave up. All the coaches are extremely proud of their efforts. POTM: Yvonne O'Connell & Maggie Quirke.
BOYS: U13 Premier - MEK Galaxy 1 St Brendan’s Park 4. Great display by our lads against the league leaders who came out deserved winners. Cade Jameson got MEK’s goal. Great displays by Ryan van der Merwe and Charlie O’Meara. U15 - MEK Galaxy B 3 Tarbert 1. Great win by our lads. Scorers: Danny Murphy 2 and Killian Fitzgerald.
Killarney Legion GAA
SENIOR MENS UPDATE: The Senior Men made it two from two in the County League with a hard-earned win over Austin Stacks. A stiff breeze backing the Tralee side saw them lead 0-9 to 0-4 at half time but an early Darragh Lyne goal in the second half laid the foundations for the 1-10 to 0-12 win. The Senior B Team welcomed Tuosist to Direen on Sunday afternoon. With a good response to training a strong panel was available to the management team and they made full use of it fielding different teams in each half with Rob Osborne in goals and Sean McCarthy the only players to play the full game. After going in at half time 1-6 to 0-2 down a strong second half performance secured a draw, 0-12 to 1-9. It's great to see such a good turnout of players over the weekend.
SENIOR LADIES: Our Senior Ladies team commenced their Donal Curtin Div 2 campaign at home to MKL Gaels in Direen. Short of a number of first team regulars this year, it was always going to be a difficult start. But they started the game well and went into an early lead 1-00 to 0-01 after 15 mins with full forward Eve Coffey finding the net. MKL came back and got a goal of their own plus a couple of points. Unfortunately, Ciara Randles picked up what looked like a hamstring injury and this was another blow to the team. A couple of positional changes at half time definitely brought an improvement but scores proved difficult to come by. Eve Coffey once again finished to the net on either side of MKL points to narrow the deficit to just 2 points, but the
visitors kept the scoreboard ticking over with some well worked points to run out winners on a final scoreline of MKL 2-07 Legion 2-2.
Spa GAA
RESULTS: In the second round of the Credit Union SFL Division 1 we narrowly lost out after a full-time score Spa 3-11 to Rathmore 3-14. Trailing by 9 points in the 52nd minute of the game we fought back to narrow the score line to a 3point difference in 60th minute of the game but unfortunately, it was not our day. The next round of this competition is away to Dr. Crokes Sunday April 9th at 3pm. Our Senior Ladies began their Donal Curtin campaign when they welcomed neighbours Dr. Crokes to Spa last Sunday morning for their opening match of the season. Good football was displayed, the ladies work rate was a credit to them, they bravely fought until the very end, but Crokes proved infallible and came away the victors. In the next round of this competition, we will play Beaufort away on April 16.
SCÓR NA BPÁISTÍ: The Scór Na bPáistí East Kerry Final took place on Sunday. This included representation from our club in different categories. Congratulations to Clodagh O'Sullivan who took first place in the Solo Singing, Lauren O'Sullivan placed third in the Recitation and the Set Dancing group also placed third. Well done also to Maura Joy, Ava Brosnan and Grace O'Leary. Everyone did the club proud.
31 CARD DRIVE: The finals of the Spa GAA 31 Card Drive took place at the Torc Hotel on March 24. Well done to everyone that participated and thank you for keeping this event going since it started running in Spa GAA Club in 1972. The overall winners presented with the John Kelly Memorial Shield were Timmy McCarthy and Mike Devane. Runner's up teams on the night were Tim and Andy Regan, John Kelly and Johnny Brosnan and Joan and Padraig Cronin. Special mention to the wonderful volunteers that organise the competition each year - Dave Herlihy, Paddy O'Keeffe and Paddy B Lynch.
LOTTO: Numbers drawn 2, 6, 8, 16. No winner. Lucky Dips €50 each: Sam McGillicuddy, Shane Cronin, Cian and Oran Lynch, Flor Murphy. Monthly Draw for Annual Ticketholders: Mike O'Leary, Countess Rd. Next week’s draw for a jackpot of €6,200.
Dr Crokes GAA
SFL DIV 1: Dr. Crokes 1-14 Gneeveguilla 0-07. The seniors travelled to Gneeveguilla on Saturday and came away with an impressive 10-point win. Playing into the breeze it took a while to get to grips with pitch conditions but David Shaw with 2 frees and 1 from play and 2 points from play from Harry Potts helped us in leading by 3 at half time. Dr. Crokes 0-06 Gneeveguilla 0-03. We dictated
matters in the second half with Mark O’Shea very strong at midfield kicking 2 great points and Billy Courtney also impressing scoring 4 points, 2 from play. At the other end our full back line of Brian Fitzgerald, Mark Fitzgerald and David Naughton were again outstanding with Brian O’Shea in goals very composed. There were also impressive displays from Evan Looney and Mark Cooper. Alex Hennigan got a great individual goal at the end intercepting a pass before carrying it 50 yards and coolly slotting under the opposition keeper. We now face Spa at home next Saturday evening at 5pm.
LGFA DONAL CURTIN CUP: Dr. Crokes 4-14 Spa 2-07. Our senior ladies had a great first outing in Division 1 of the Donal Curtin Cup against Spa away on Sunday morning. A super team performance with a special mention to Selina Thawiset-Collins and Saoirse O’Sullivan who made their senior debuts.
LGFA U14: Dr. Crokes 5-06 Austin Stacks B 1-02. Our U14 girls had a great start to their season with a win over Spa last Sunday in their first outing, which was followed up this Sunday with a second win against a young Austin Stacks side. We dominated the first half with Sabra Hickey and Lauren Casey well on top in midfield and Keva McCarthy and Isobel Cremin racking up our scores. Stacks started better in the second half, but Saoirse O’Donoghue, Ali Lyne and Jessica McCrohan kept them at bay. Miren O’Connor and Amy Keating also showed well in attack. All in all, a great team performance from all 17 girls that lined out. MEMBERSHIP is now due for the 2023 year.
Fossa GAA
SENIOR COUNTY LEAGUE: Fossa GAA 2-10 Ardfert GAA 1-08. Fossa retained their 100% record in Div 3 of the Credit Union County League after a cracking game playing in excellent conditions in Fossa. Ardfert led at the break by a point, but Fossa finished the stronger team. Fossa defence played some outstanding football with the Doyle brothers and Cian McCarty being the pick of the bunch. Another superb performance by Paddy Sheehan, Eoin Talbot and Matt Rennie in the middle third - gave the forwards great supply with Harry Buckley and the O’Shea’s doing the damage. Fossa 2-10 Ardfert 1-8. Scorers: Emmet O’Shea 1-5, Harry Buckley 1-1, Tadgh O’Shea 0-3, Ruairi Doyle 0-1. Up next Senior are away in Skellig Rangers - next Saturday evening at 6pm in South Kerry. A big “well done” to Ardfert for the sporting gesture of the guard of honour. A minute silence was also observed for our President Pat Sweeney and Dermot Clifford’s mother, Breda Clifford.
SENIOR FOOTBALL DIVISION 6: Kilcummin B 0-11 Fossa B 1-10. A last-minute goal by Mark Dennehy secured the league points for Fossa in this tough
away encounter, good defensive performances from Conor Murphy, Sean Dineen, Sam Buckley were key, and “impact sub” – Lorcan Daly kicked vital points. All in all – a good entertaining game.
U13 BOYS: Fossa made the trip to Kilgarvan on Sunday for their second Division 4 County league game. Well done to the boys for coming out on top of what was a highly entertaining and tightly contested match. U15 B team suffered a heavy loss in Listowel.
CONDOLENCES: Sympathy to Dermot, Ellen, Shelly, Paudie & David and all the Clifford families on their recent bereavement of Dermot’s mother Breda, may her gentle soul rest in peace.

COUNTY LEAGUE DIVISION 2: Glenflesk 0–11 Glenbeigh Glencar 0–10. A match of not the highest quality ever seen, but Glenflesk won’t care as they continued their winning start to Division 2 of the County League, and a fifteenth win in a row in County League action over the last 3 years. While not as good a performance as last week, the 2 points gained were crucial. After 2 round’s Glenflesk are the only team to have won their game’s. In what looks like it could be a very competitive League, that is all they could have asked for.
Kilcummin GAA
CO LEAGUE DIV 6: Kilcummin B 0-11 Fossa B 1-10. Our team conceded a goal at the very last kick of the game for a heart-breaking end to what was an entertaining encounter. We started well and lead by three points after 10 minutes but conceded eight points in a row to leave the half-time score Fossa 0-8 Kilcummin 0-3. However, the second
half was all Kilcummin until those final moments of time added on. We scored eight points to one and lead by two in normal time, but Fossa found that bit extra to emerge victorious. On the bright side were the display particularly in the second half of many of our younger players in particular Oran Dwyer, Oisin O’Leary, Cian Lynch, Jack Fogarty and Colin O’Leary.
CO LEAGUE DIV 1: Kilcummin 0-10 Dingle 0-10. This was a closely contested encounter throughout with defences on top for the most part and scores difficult to come by. Dingle started brightly and lead by three points early on but scores from Gary O’Leary and Mark O’Shea brought us on level terms while Donal Maher, and James Devane added further scores to see us trail 0-7 to 0-6 at half time. In the second half we lost Gary O’Leary to injury, but his replacement Padraigh Moynihan made his presence felt with two good points from play. Philip O’Leary and Paul O’Shea rounded off our scoring and we picked up our first point of the county league. We now travel to Castleisland on Saturday next for rd3 at 6.30 pm.

Kerry Badminton
MIXED DOUBLES CHAMPIONSHIPS:
Friday night last the final championship night of the year was held in Tralee Sports Complex. We are very thankful to the complex for hosting all of our county championships this season. It’s brilliant to have such a big hall perfect
for badminton here in Kerry. Everyone who came and played in the different championships always seemed to enjoy themselves whether it be on the court or even off it walking around and chatting to those watching the games. The final mixed doubles competition was held on Friday night and once again it was great to see everyone in good spirits and enjoying themselves. Well done to all the players on the night. In Division 4, it was a close competition with a very strong entry with lots of the games including both semi-finals going to 3 sets. In the end, the final was won by Mikey Belov Flanagan and Rita McCarthy (Listowel) where they beat Aoife Bowler (Moyvane) and Rahad Rahman (Killarney). Unfortunately, in division 2, the final had to be cut short after a very good first set going all the way to 24-22. But early in the second set Ivan Rusov (Listowel) got injured as he moved toward the shuttle and couldn’t continue playing and so he and his partner Helen Browne (Moyvane) had to retire meaning that Samira Hayes and Brendan McGovern (Killarney) got to take home the title. All of us at Kerry badminton would like to wish Ivan a speedy recovery from his injury. Finally, as that was our final championship night of the season, a big thank you must be said to all those who helped in the running and organising of the competitions and also to Tom Bradley for taking pictures at each night.
