Clifford thanks fans after All-Ireland loss

Football fans braved the weather on Monday evening to welcome home the Kerry football.

Despite their loss to Dublin in Sunday’s All Ireland Football final the Kerry County board went ahead with a low key homecoming reception in Killarney’s Glebe Car Park and College St.

A similar event in Tralee did not go ahead as a result of the heart breaking twopoint loss to Dublin on Sunday. Monday’s reception was led by Killarney Mayor Brendan Cronin and Kerry TD Norma Foley. Local businessman and Kerry County Board chairman Patrick O’Sullivan was also in attendance

Fossa hero praised the Kerry fans for their support throughout the season.

“We are very sorry to you that we weren’t able to deliver on Sunday. Thanks very

much for all the support ye’ve given us. We’re very thankful for it. I know maybe we take it for granted sometimes but we know we’re very lucky to have such a brilliant Kerry support. So thanks very much

to all of ye for coming out all through the year” he said on stage on Monday night.

“Tough finish, but thanks to all the lads for all the commitment they’ve given throughout the year. To Jack and all the

management team. “Thanks very much for leaving no stone unturned throughout the course of the year, and the last two years. Obviously bringing home the All-Ireland last year and getting back to the All-Ireland this year.

“Again, we’re very sorry to ye that we weren’t able to deliver yesterday. But hopefully we can continue to build on this and go and right the wrongs next year.”

Clifford the younger thanked many people during his speech tonight - the County and East Kerry boards, his fellow players, sponsors - but his most stirring words came while acknowledging Jack O'Connor and his management team: “Very sorry to ye that we weren't able to deliver yesterday, but hopefully we can continue to build on this and go right the wrongs next year.”

Homecoming nights are as much about the players thanking the supporters as the supporters thanking the players, and he assured the fans that their loyalty - evident again this night in the driving Killarney rain - is deeply appreciated by the men who wear the green and gold.

“It would be remiss of me not to [thank] the supporters…ye followed us everywhere we went and ye're here tonight, in the wind and rain,” he said.

“We take it for granted sometimes, but we're lucky to have such brilliant Kerry support.”

Killarney Fire Station closed as strike escalates

Killarney Fire Station has remained closed for several days this week as the current fire fighters’ strike escalates.

The station was closed every second day this week meaning any emergency had to be dealt with by the nearest operational station.

Retained firefighters work part-time and are compensated with a retainment fee each year.

The Labour Court made a number of recommendations - including that the fee be increased by between 24% and 32.7%.

Trade union members found the recommendations unacceptable and, last week, retained firefighters have returned to picket lines across the country.

The row escalated even further this week, with 50 percent of stations across the country closing for 24 hours each day.

Killarney Fire Station closed at 9am on Tuesday morning and re-opened again on Wednesday morning for 24 hours only.

New bus service to link Killarney and Waterville

TFI Local Link Kerry has recently launched a new bus route, which will improve connectivity between Waterville and Killarney.

This new route is part of the Connecting Ireland Rural Mobility Plan which is a major national public transport initiative developed and funded by the National Transport Authority (NTA) as part of the Transport for Ireland (TFI) Network.

Route 280 will operate seven daily return services Monday to Sunday between Waterville and Killorglin, which includes three daily return trips between Waterville and Killarney. The new route will provide a peak-time service for commuters as well as improved connectivity to rail services in Killarney and regional bus services in Killorglin. The route from Waterville to Killarney

will offer enhanced connectivity to villages and areas such as Cahersiveen, Kells, Glenbeigh, Killorglin and Beaufort.

The new timetable has been designed to allow passengers to travel from Waterville, Cahersiveen and Glenbeigh and to arrive into Killorglin by 8am facilitating transfer to Route 279 for onward travel to Tralee or Killarney. There will also be a bus from Killarney arriving in Killorglin before 9am with timed connections in Waterville with the recently launched Route 281 from Waterville to Kenmare.

This new service will provide new opportunities for communities across the Iveragh Peninsula and will enable greater connectivity for employment, recreation, education and health purposes.

“We are on call 24/7, 52 weeks a year, but we are only considered parttime workers,” said Killarney Fire Officer Sinead Galvin.

SIPTU said retained firefighters are striking to ensure that the Government's report on the future of the service will be implemented to resolve the recruitment and retention crisis that threatens to collapse this essential and life-saving community resource.

The system is broken,” added Pat Fleming of Killarney Fire Station.

“We have to sacrifice so much that only the firefighters and their families understand fully. We have no time off. We can't leave Killarney or the station won’t have any cover. The pager is on us 24 hours of the day, it is beside us while we sleep and clothes are laid out to be prepared for night times calls."

Main St pedestrianised for summer

The town’s main throughfare will be pedestrianised on weekends until the end of the current tourist season.

Killarney Municipal District will temporarily close Main St from its junction with Kenmare Place and Mission Road

to its junction with New St. The street will close at 12 noon and re-open at 8am every Monday.

As a result of this weekend’s Bank Holiday the street will remain closed until Tuesday morning. This arrangement will continue until Monday, September 4.

Una Sweeney from Killarney got a great surprise this week when she received a call from Killarney Credit Union to find out she had won a brand new Suzuki Swift in the Killarney Credit Union members draw.

Una picked up the keys of her new car from Shane Foley & Noreen O’Sullivan of Killarney Credit Union this week accompanied by family.

Triple gold for Killarney cyclist at Transplant Games

Killarney’s Patrick O’Connor is a triple gold medal winner at the British Transplant Games.

Patrick won the 5km cycle time time and the 10k road race in Coventry last week.

Adding to his success, on Friday he also took gold in the 5km race walk, an

event he entered for the first time. The Park Road resident has a hereditary kidney condition that was discovered around ten years ago and underwent a kidney transplant since. It was his first transplant games and he competed to raise awareness on organ donation.

Chance to meet ladies football heroes ahead of All-Ireland

The Ladies Football team are hosting a meet and greet session at Fitzgerald Stadium on Sunday.

The event, which runs from 11.15am to 12 noon will allow fans the chance to meet members of the team that qualified for the All Ireland Football Final the following Sunday.

Players and management will be available during the short time period for photos and autographs.

Ring of Kerry road set for night time closures from next month

It has been confirmed by Kerry County Council, in a reply to local Fianna Fáil Councillor, Michael Cahill, that due to the nature of the works required to be done on the road at Gleensk Viaduct in Kells and the heavy plant required, a night time closure will be required there, from late September to mid-December 2023.

“This proposed closure will be an enormous inconvenience and interference with the lives of all those living in Cahersiveen and South Kerry, from Kells to Bolus, Knightstown to Cillian Liath. I am seeking further details of access for emergency vehicles, deliveries and public transport and what alternatives are to be put in place,” said Councillor Cahill. “Many people travel in and out of South Kerry, in the early hours to attend their places of employment and such a closure would pose gigantic difficulties for them, not to mention the additional costs involved. Accessibility for emergency crews must be maintained to the highest level and lives cannot be put at risk. Further details must be and will be provided. The difficulties involved in this repair work are obvious of course, but we must not lose sight of the daily requirements of all the people of South Kerry” said Coun-

cillor Cahill.

"The Ring of Kerry is vital to the local economy in South Kerry and this decision will come as a major shock to the general public and business community and it is critical that Transport Infrastructure Ireland carryout these works in the speediest possible timeframe," stated Councillor Cahill

"It is hugely important that the people of Cahersiveen and Iveragh are informed fully at an early date so that any alternative arrangements can be put in place," added Councillor Cahill.

Councillor Cahill also sought clarification on whether or not the road may be closed during the daytime. In response, Padraig Teahan confirmed that it was planned to close the road only at night time and that emergency vehicles will also be accommodated.

New service to reduce unnecessary A&E attendances for older people

The HSE National Ambulance Service in collaboration with University Hospital Kerry – South South West Hospital Group, has launched its patient orientated service called Pathfinder.

The Pathfinder service is designed to safely keep older people who phone 112/999 in their own home rather than taking them to a hospital emergency department.

Pathfinder improves outcomes for older people by providing safe alternative care at home rather than in hospital and will be provided by National Ambulance Service staff working with colleagues from University Hospital Kerry.

How the Pathfinder Service works: The Pathfinder ‘Rapid Response Team’

respond to 999/112 calls for older people (65 years and older) in their homes. This may be someone for instance after a fall or who is generally unwell. The older person is assessed by both an Advanced Paramedic and Occupational Therapist/ Physiotherapist.

Where safe, the team supports the older person at home rather than transporting them to emergency department, by linking with a wide range of alternative hospital and community services. Pathfinder also operates a ‘Follow-Up

Team’ (Physiotherapy & Occupational Therapy) which provides immediate home-based rehabilitation, equipment provision and case-management in the subsequent days following a 999/112 call.

The service will operate in Kerry from 8am to 8pm Monday to Friday, excluding Bank Holidays. In addition, the Advanced Paramedics for Pathfinder will operate on Saturday and Sunday for Follow Ups, Catheterisation and Advanced Life Support.

Pathfinder has been working as a collaborative service between the NAS and Dublin’s Beaumont Hospital Occupational Therapy & Physiotherapy Departments for more than two years

and has now also expanded to operate in Limerick, Tallaght, Waterford, Kilkenny and Cork. On average two thirds of patients seen by Pathfinder following a 999 call have remained at home rather than being brought to the Emergency Department.

Mary Fitzgerald Hospital Manager, University Hospital Kerry said: “We are extremely pleased to be able to offer this service to suitable older people here in our local Kerry community. Through the Pathfinder Model, many older patients can be safely and appropriately managed in their own home rather than being transported to the ED for assessment when they dial 112/999. Pathfinder aims to reduce congestion in busy Emergency Departments and makes for a better environment for patients and staff on the floor whilst improving overall flow through the ED. The service enables increased ED capacity to care for other patients, by supporting this cohort of complex, frail patients at home.”

Killarney-Ukraine refugee paves the way for diverse leadership in Irish society

Natalya Krasnenkova from Killarney was among 31 migrants graduating from political and leadership programmes, at a ceremony run by the Immigrant Council of Ireland (ICI).

Natalya graduated from the Migrant Leadership Academy. Run by the ICI, the course is aimed at increasing migrant representation in politics and encouraging migrants to use their voice to enact change.

At a special event at EPIC Museum Dublin, graduates were presented with certificates. Sinéad Gibney, Chief Commissioner at the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission delivered the keynote address.

Speaking at the graduation, Immigrant Council of Ireland CEO, Brian Killoran, said, “One of the most incredible benefits to working with diverse communities is the opportunity to interact with up-andcoming community and political leaders. The energy, dynamism, and passion of those who participate in our leadership academy and political internship scheme gives us all a boost, and shows us that the future is bright for social and community activism in Kerry and Ireland, and for diversity in politics.

“By stepping up and participating, they are demonstrating their commitment to build a future for Ireland that is positive, diverse and informed by strong values of social justice, collaboration, mutual support and human rights. Marks & Spencer searching for charity food distribution partners

Marks & Spencer Ireland is looking for charities and community groups in Kerry to join its food redistribution scheme.

Groups can, free of charge, get quality M&S food from the Killarney store, for the people they work with.

The M&S food redistribution programme has been running since 2015 with its redistribution partner Neighbourly and is designed to eliminate food waste and to link stores with local communities to donate food to those in need.

In 2022 and 2023, M&S has saved 270 tonnes of food, equating to 642,828 meals, from going to waste across Ireland through the scheme.

The programme uses technology which notifies M&S’ charity partners of anything unsold at the end of the day that can be collected from their local store. The technology also allows stores to donate products where the packaging is damaged, but the food inside is safe and good quality.

M&S is now calling on new community

groups in Kerry to join the programme to receive the quality surplus produce from M&S Killarney and ensure that surplus food goes to those in need.

“At M&S we are committed to eliminating food waste as part of our Plan A sustainability strategy, which sets out how we will become a zero-waste organisation. Part of our work in this area means ensuring that all surplus food produce gets redistributed to communities in Kerry and across Ireland.” said Eddie Murphy, Trading Director at M&S Ireland.

“We work hard to make the food we produce and stock the very best, and our partnership with Neighbourly provides that produce to the people who need it. We know there are more people that we can be helping, so we want to hear from community groups doing incredible work in the community about how we can support them with our surplus produce.”

18 graduates in total completed the Migrant Leadership Academy. The aim of the programme is to improve leadership skills and the capacity of participants to initiate, design and implement community-led campaigns and initiatives. It also aims to empower migrant and refugee communities to speak out on issues affecting them.

Also recognised at the ceremony were 13 people who graduated from the Migrant Councillor Internship Scheme. The internship scheme is a mentoring programme that pairs local councillors with migrants who want to learn more about Irish politics and get involved in their local communities. Graduates from this programme hailed from Dublin, Waterford, Offaly, Galway, Cavan, Cork and Kildare.

Over 100 children attended a Faith Camp at St Oliver’s National School last week.

Activities included music, drama, sports, games, and arts and crafts.

“It’s a lovely thing to be involved in. It is always a fun and energetic week with such an uplifting and joyful atmos-

First pictures of George Bernard Shaw painting in Muckross

A unique palette knife oil painting of George Bernard Shaw, by Co. Donegal artist Mark McFadden, was unveiled at the Muckross Park Hotel & Spa in Ireland to commemorate the playwright’s 167th anniversary.

Crafted over a 12-month period and standing at an impressive 5 feet 6 inches tall, (167cm), the piece was carefully brought to life by self-taught artist McFadden, who hails from the small Irish-speaking Gaeltacht town of Falcarragh in north-west Co. Donegal.

The painting is a tribute to Bernard Shaw, who was born in Portobello, Dublin on July 26th, 1856, and who is strongly suggested to have written the world-famous play Pygmalion at Muckross Park in the picturesque town of Killarney - capital of the ancient Kingdom of Kerry.

“Shaw is one of only two people to have been awarded a Nobel Prize in Literature (in 1925) and an Academy Award (in 1938),” Mark McFadden said.

“A triumph at the Oscars for an adapted screenplay of his play Pygmalion was a personal victory of immense significance. Thus, he remains an enduringly inspiring and legendary figure, not only to me, but also for future generations”.

Master of palette knife oil painting, McFadden employs a distinctive colourful and textured layering technique which has catapulted his work into the private collections of Monaco’s Prince Albertthe son of Princess Grace Kelly - singer Julian Lennon, and the Levett Family Trust.

“I can’t recall exactly how long it took me to paint Shaw – it was certainly over a year, with lots of perseverance, through enormous doubt and through various personal carnage and associated tears that tends to go with the tooth and claw of art,” McFadden said.

“One of my heroes was 19th-century painter Vincent van Gogh, who used the impasto technique of applying paint to canvas using a knife. It takes time, and you think a lot about quitting, but the result can be incredible”.

In a fascinating twist to what promises to be a memorable unveiling, the jury is still out on how much of Shaw’s world-famous work Pygmalion was actually writ-

ten in the hotel.

The writer developed an affection for the venue, spending numerous summer evenings reading and writing in the gardens and relishing the cosy ambience of the bar now known as ‘The Monk's Lounge’.

“Shaw and his wife Charlotte Payne Townsend certainly stayed at the hotel on several occasions, and there are strong indications that parts of Pygmalion were written here,” said Garrett Power, General Manager at Muckross Park Hotel & Spa.

“The play, of course, later evolved into the timeless classic ‘My Fair Lady,’ star-

Killarney company Tricel has announced Gem Oils Ltd in County Cavan as its latest acquisition.

Puffins departing earlier from Skellig Michael

The iconic Atlantic Puffins are currently departing in their droves, which seems to be earlier than previous years from Skellig Michael, (Sceilg Mhichīl) - 6th century Monastic Island 12 Km, off the coast of Kerry.

Maybe they arrived earlier this year and successfully bred on the UNESCO Heritage Site. Typically in April, thousands of puffin return to Scellig Michael, to breed. Puffin nest sites are found in burrows or in cracks and crevices across the island which offers protection from avian predators. This year fish is in abundant supply, with plenty of adora-

ble puffins recorded this season. Whatever the weather - NPWS staff have closely monitored this seabird colony. One such puffin was ringed on 8th July 1991, and spotted 31 years later by Ornithologist Brian Power. Skellig Michael is both a Statutory Nature Reserve and a Special Protection Area.

Partial Capacity Benefit

Partial Capacity Benefit is a social welfare scheme which allows you to return to work or self-employment if you have reduced capacity to work as a consequence of your illness or disability and to continue to receive a payment from the Department of Social Protection (DSP).

How do I qualify for Partial Capacity Benefit?

If you are currently getting Illness Benefit (for a minimum of 6 months) or Invalidity Pension and wish to return to work, you may qualify for Partial Capacity Benefit if your capacity for work is reduced by your medical condition. You will qualify for Partial Capacity Benefit if your restriction on capacity for work is assessed as moderate, severe, or profound. If it is assessed as mild you will not qualify. There is no requirement that the work a person does while on Partial Capacity Benefit has to be for rehabilitative or therapeutic purposes.

I am in receipt of Invalidity Pension & thinking of doing voluntary work. Must I apply for Partial Capacity Benefit?

No, you do not have to transfer onto the Partial Capacity Scheme if you wish to do voluntary work.

How long can I get Partial Capacity Benefit?

If you are coming from Invalidity Pension, your Partial Capacity Benefit will continue for a maximum of 3 years (156 weeks). However, you can apply for PCB again. You will be reassessed to find out if you qualify. If you are coming from Illness Benefit, your Partial Capacity Benefit payment will continue to the end of your entitlement to Illness Benefit.

What is the rate of Partial Capacity Benefit?

Partial Capacity Benefit is made up of a personal rate for you and may include increases for your qualified adult and qualified children. The personal rate of payment is based on the assessment of your restriction on capacity for work, whether you were in receipt of Illness Benefit or Invalidity Pension and your current rate of payment.

If I transfer to Partial Capacity Benefit and start work but become ill again what are my options?

When you are getting Partial Capacity Benefit and you are unable to work for a period of time due to illness, you should contact the Partial Capacity Section and let them know about your situation.

For short periods of illness (up to 8 weeks at a time), you can stay on Partial Capacity Benefit, but your weekly rate

can be increased to the full Illness Benefit or Invalidity Pension personal rate. For longer periods of illness (greater than 8 weeks), DSP will reassess your Partial Capacity Benefit claim and you may return to your Illness Benefit or Invalidity Pension. If you become able for work again you can contact DSP about going back onto Partial Capacity Benefit. Do I keep my entitlement to secondary benefits if I transfer to Partial Capacity Benefit?

If you were getting Invalidity Pension and were entitled to Free Travel or Island Allowance, you can keep these if you qualify for Partial Capacity Benefit. You cannot keep your Fuel Allowance. You can also keep the Household Benefits Package but it will be means-tested after the first 2 years and annually after that. The means test has a weekly income limit. This limit is the maximum rate of State Pension (Contributory) for your circumstances (this includes any dependents you may have) plus €120. Your weekly income limit is then compared to your weekly means in a means test.

If you were getting Invalidity Pension and a Living Alone Allowance (LAA) with your Invalidity Pension (or you start to live alone while you are getting PCB), your rate of PCB will be calculated on the basis of your Invalidity Pension and your LAA. So, for example, if your restriction on capacity for work is severe, your PCB payment will be 75% of your IP and LAA payment.

You should check with the Department of Social Protection to see how your Rent Supplement may be affected by your participation in the Partial Capacity Scheme.

How do I apply for Partial Capacity Benefit?

You complete a Partial Capacity Benefit form, which you can get from the Department of Social Protection or from your local Citizens Information Centre. A Medical Assessor will assess the restriction on your capacity for work. This may require you to attend a medical assessment. You should include all appropriate medical evidence with your application.

If you qualify for Partial Capacity Benefit, you are not required to send in medical certificates.

When should I apply?

You must apply for Partial Capacity Benefit (PCB) within 21 days of starting work. You can apply for Partial Capacity Benefit before you get a job. You must start work within 13 weeks of making your application.

Partial Capacity Benefit is not paid to people over 66. You should apply for a State Pension at least 3 months before your 66th birthday.

Féile Lughnasadh returns to Milltown this weekend, once again providing a free, family-friendly festival of the very best in trad, all free and open air in the town square.

“Milltown is definitely the place to be this August Bank Holiday weekend”, explained organiser Owen O’Shea. “Dé Danann are a huge act and we are delighted to have them play in Milltown.

Exchequer tax take up

Almost €6.57 billion in tax was received by the Exchequer in July, up €303m (4.6%) on the same month of last year.

Figures from the Department of Finance show Corporation Tax take continuing to surge, with €333m taken in the month, 43.3% more than in July 2022. Income tax receipts were 8.7% higher year-onyear, at €2.7 billion. Meanwhile €2.93 billion was received in VAT, up 4.9%. It means that almost €47.8 billion has been received by the Exchequer so far this year - up €4.34 billion (10%) on the

first seven months of 2022. Corporation tax take is €1.87 billion (20.7%) higher so far this year at almost €10.9 billion.

Income taxes are €1.48 billion (8.8%) higher at €18.22 billion, while €13.2 billion has been received in VAT; up €1.36 billion (11.5%).

However there has been a decline in some other tax categories in the first seven months of the year.

Stamp duties are currently €289m (26.4%) lower year-on-year at €806m. Capital gains tax take is down €105m (21.6%) to €382m, while capital acqui-

sitions taxes are down €16m (10.2%) at €141m.

Overall, the Exchequer recorded a €700m surplus in the year to the end of July, compared to a €5 billion surplus in the same period of last year.

Commenting on the figures, the Minister for Finance, Michael McGrath T.D. said: “Today’s Exchequer returns continue the trends established in the first half of the year, with robust income tax returns and steady growth in VAT receipts reflecting the strength of an economy that is now operating at essentially full employment’.

X marked the spot

Elon Musk's X, formerly known as Twitter, is facing a bill from San Francisco authorities after placing an unauthorised flashing X sign on the roof of its headquarters.

The sign was put up on a week ago as part of the company's rebrand, but it attracted 24 complaints over that weekend. It was taken down on Monday and X will be charged the cost of building permits for its installation and removal.

It is not the first obstacle Mr Musk's company has run into as it changes its downtown headquarters.

An attempt to remove the firm's old name had to be temporarily abandoned, meaning for a brief period only the letters ER remained on the building.

Greek PM offers free holidays to tourists as wildfire compensation

Greece will grant a one-week free holiday to tourists whose vacation was cut short by the wildfires which devastated Rhodes recently, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis

said on Wednesday.

"For all of those whose holidays were cut short as a result of the wildfires, the Greek government, in cooperation with the local authorities, will offer one week

of free holidays on Rhodes next spring or next fall," Mitsotakis adding the island was now "back to normal."

A favoured holiday destination, Greece is heavily reliant on tourism, which accounts for a quarter of its GDP. Around 20,000 people were evacuated from Rhodes in recent weeks after wildfires burned through around ten percent of the island's land area.

Unemployment rate falls to 4.1% in July

New Central Statistics Office show that the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for July eased to 4.1%, down from a revised rate of 4.2% recorded in June.

The CSO said it had revised upwards the jobless rate for each month of 2023, meaning the rate did not hit a record low as previously estimated.

2023’s Perseid meteor shower: the best in years

The Perseid meteor shower is one of the best shooting star displays of the year and it's currently active from mid-July to late August. This year the shower will peak around Aug. 13, 2023 and will be a good year as the moon will only be 10% illuminated. The Perseids are caused by Earth passing through debris, bits of ice and rock left behind by Comet Swift-Tuttle which last passed close to Earth in 1992. The Perseids peak when Earth passes through the densest and dustiest area on August 11-12.

Although the Perseids are slowly getting weaker over time, this year's show should be the best in several years for two reasons. First, it happens to occur on a weekend, staying up late on Saturday night or getting up early on Sunday morning before daylight breaks, will have a spectacular chance at a natural show under clear, dark skies. This year’s peak of the Perseids corresponds only to a waning crescent moon, meaning that the moon won’t rise until the early hours on the morning of the 13th. Until then, pristinely dark skies hopefully will be on the menu.

New car market growth with EVs sales set monthly record

New car sales in July were up 24 per cent on the same month last year. Total registrations in July were 21,904, bringing total new car figure for the year so far to 87,115, up 20 per cent from the previous year.

Electric vehicles sales set a new monthly record, with 4,161 registrations. So far this year 18,458 EVs have been registered. According to Brian Cooke, director general of the SIMI: “Improved supply and a greater range of new models available for motorists has supported this momentum behind EVs.

“The availability of SEAI grants to support positive decision-making has been key, and their retention beyond this year, along with other EV incentives, is vital if we want to build on this success.

“Taking a closer look at the EV registration numbers, the main driver of growth is from consumers, who do qualify for the grant, and account for over 76% of

EV sales.

“However, there also needs to be a focus on the business market, which without grant support really needs to see the extension of the Benefit in Kind (BIK) reliefs in Budget 2024, while investment in the public charging infrastructure is also crucial at this stage.”

In the commercial sector, van sales are up 35.3 per cent on last year, with 22,997 registrations, while truck sales are up 33.4 per cent at 1,927 up to the end of July.

Toyota is the best-seller with 1,4999 registrations with 14.3 per cent of the market, followed by Volkswagen on 11,744, Hyundai on 10,557 and Skoda on 8,532. While EV accounts for 17.6 per cent of sales this year, petrol remains on top for new car buyers, representing 32.3 per cent of the new car market, ahead of diesel on 22 per cent, with hybrids at 18 per cent.

Previous estimates had suggested the rate dropped to 3.8% in May and June, below the previous all-time low of 3.9% reached between October 2000 and April 2001 in the early days of the Celtic Tiger.

CSO figures this week showed that that the unemployment rate for men fell to 4.3% in July from a revised rate of 4.5% in June 2023, and up from 4.1% the same month last year.

The jobless rate for women was unchanged at a revised June rate of 3.9% and was down from a rate of 4.4% in July of last year.

But the youth unemployment rate rose to 10.7% in July of this year from a revised rate of 10.5% in June.

Today's figures show that the seasonally adjusted number of people unemployed stood at 111,900 in July, down from 115,500 in June.

German supermarket charges ‘true costs’ of meat and dairy on our climate

A leading German discount supermarket has raised prices on a selection of its products to reflect their real cost on the environment and people’s health.

In the week-long experiment in over 2,000 locations of the Penny chain, a range of nine products, mainly dairy and meat, were priced at what experts from two German universities have deemed to be their true cost, in relation to their effect on soil, climate, water use and health.

The “real costs” campaign has seen the price of wiener sausages rise from €3.19 to €6.01, mozzarella go up by 74% to

€1.55, and fruit yoghurt increase by 31% from €1.19 to €1.56.

On average, environmental costs of €1.15 were added to organic products in comparison to non-organic products where an additional €1.57 was added. “The prices of our food, which are incurred along the supply chain, do not reflect the environmental costs,” Penny’s chief operating officer Stefan Goergens said.

The production, processing, transport, and the consumption of food creates costs, so-called “hidden costs” which are not reflected in retail prices, Penny said.

Road safety alert ahead of Bank Holiday weekend

The Road Safety Authority (RSA) and An Garda Síochána have issued a stark warning that years of road safety progress is being undone as new figures reveal that road deaths in the first half of 2023 are the worst for six years.

A total of 100 road deaths have occurred so far this year (as of midnight July 31), an increase of 9 compared to last year. The RSA is warning the Irish public that, should current trends continue, as many

as 168 lives will be lost on our roads this year. These figures do not include the tragedy that claimed the lives of two teenage girls in Monaghan earlier this week.

So far this year, four people have lost their lives in road traffic accidents in Kerry. This is compared to six for all of 2023 and eight in 2021 meaning , on average, Kerry is facing a very bad year statistically.

The RSA and An Garda Síochána are appealing to all road users to be more vigilant on our roads.

Vision impaired Fires girl goes driving

A vision impaired Fires girl got the chance of a lifetime recently when she drove a specially adapted car for the first time.

Grace O’Sullivan, 13., who has Stargardts, took part in a special Vision Sports Ireland event at Mondello Park last week.

Run in partnership with Motorsport Ireland, the day provided an experience of a lifetime for 80 blind and vision impaired participants.

During the morning session, participants got behind the wheel of hybrid and electric dual control Opel Corsa cars, offering a unique driving experience. For many of them, including Grace, it was their first time ever getting behind the wheel of a car.

“She had a brilliant time and loved every minute of it,” said her mother Mary. “Grace is already asking if she can go again next year.”

In the afternoon they took to Mondello’s famous track where they experienced passenger rides in a host of different rally

cars driven by some of Ireland’s top drivers.

Grace teamed up with Mayo-based rally driver Vanessa McFadden, sister of the event organiser, Sara, for her first taste of rally driving.

She also met her sporting hero, multiple Paralympic gold medallist Jason Smyth who also has Stargardts.

“Grace has followed Jason since she was seven years old, not alone is a great runner but he is an inspiration, he is married with two children and just shows that you can have a near enough normal life,” added Mary.

The O’Sullivan Family is organising a charity cycle on September 9. Pedal for Grace will raise funds for the National Council for the Blind and will be based in the Firies Community Centre.

First BYD ATTO 3 on Kerry roads

The Chinese car giant BYD entered the Irish car market in February this year.

The brand is imported into Ireland by Motor Distributors Ltd, the same firm behind Mercedes Benz in this country. BYD is the world’s biggest manufacturer of electric cars – bigger than Tesla since last year.

At the time of the launch, MDL said it would have cars on Irish roads by the summer and so it has come to pass that

a BYD ATTO 3 has been registered in Kerry in July.

The car is built on the company's new generation platform, and the frontwheel drive EV claims a range of 420km on a full charge of its Blade Battery 60.5kWh power unit.

The BYD ATTO 3 boasts excellent safety credentials, having obtained a 5 star rating in safety tests conducted by the independent European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP).

The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) is warning consumers to stop using particular gas hobs which were manufactured since 2019 and sold in Ireland.

An issue has been identified with the elbow joint on the connecting pipework of certain models of Belling, Cooke and Lewis and Caple gas hobs. The gas supply elbow joint from the hob to the gas supply may fracture and cause gas to leak. This means a risk to health or even death from burns, fire, explosion and poisoning from inhalation.

The CCPC is urging consumers to check if their gas hob is listed on the product safety information notices online. Affected consumers should immediately stop

using the gas hob. The CCPC is in contact with the manufacturers to ensure that they inform consumers of this safety issue and address the risks from any affected hobs.

The affected products include Belling gas hobs, Cooke and Lewis gas hobs, Caple gas hobs and Electriq gas hobs. Please log onto www.ccpc.ie for specific product information notices.

CPCC member Pat Kenny said “Gas leaks are extremely serious and can cause poisoning, explosions or fire, leading to life

changing injuries and even death.

The fault identified affects several different types and brands of gas hobs. The CCPC is engaging with the manufacturers, brand owners and retailers of these gas hobs to ensure that consumers are alerted to these safety risks as a matter of urgency.

It is essential that the affected gas hobs are identified and the safety issues fixed as soon as possible”

Consumers are also reminded that if they smell gas they should turn off their gas supply at the meter and contact Gas Networks Ireland immediately on 1800 20 50 50

- David Clifford voted fan’s Player of the Year in end of season survey

- Mood amongst supporters remains positive despite Dublin defeat

David Clifford has been selected as the Killarney Advertiser Kerry Player of the Year following an excellent season in which he led his team to another All-Ireland final.

Clifford’s year ended in disappointment as he missed some late shots in last Sunday’s defeat to Dublin in Croke Park but, in our end of season survey, supporters still singled the Fossa man out as the side’s standout performer in 2023.

The 24-year-old received 87% of the Player of the Year votes, with Shane Ryan, Paudie Clifford, Diarmuid O’Connor and Jason Foley splitting the majority of the remainder.

The Kerry captain also earned the Individual Performance of the Year accolade for his showing in the memorable All-Ireland semi-final victory over Derry. Clifford scored nine points against the Oak Leaf County, including four from play, one mark, and four frees. He received 48% of the votes in this category.

Diarmuid O’Connor’s heroic display against Tyrone in the quarter-final was selected as the second best performance by a Kerry player (29%), while Paudie Clifford’s efforts against Dublin were worthy of a third place finish (11%). Shane Ryan’s performance versus Mayo in Killarney came fourth.

Unsurprisingly, the 12-point victory over Tyrone was chosen as the Best Team Performance of the Year. Seánie O’Shea’s goal in that match – a composed finish following an outrageous pass by Clifford and an assist by Tony Brosnan – was voted as Kerry’s Goal of the Year.

MOOD

We also attempted to gauge the Kerry public’s mood after a rollercoaster season that eventually saw the team fall agonisingly short of their ultimate goal.

When asked to rate their satisfaction with Kerry’s year, 57% of supporters said they are ‘satisfied’ with a further 10% stating that they are ‘very satisfied’.

Exactly 20% are on the fence – ‘neither satisfied nor dissatisfied’ – with only 12% saying that they are ‘dissatisfied’. A very small percentage – less than 1% - are ‘very dissatisfied’ with how the season panned out.

Jack O’Connor and his coaching staff are expected to stay on board for next season and according to our survey, Kerry supporters are more than happy for that to happen. Over 82% of those polled are either ‘satisified’ (51.8%) or ‘very satisfied’ (30.3%) with the current Kerry management team, while a small minority are either ‘dissatisfied’ (5.7%) or ‘very dissatisfied’ (1.3%). The rest (roughly 11%) have no strong feelings either way.

Judging by the results of the survey, the mood is happier than it might usually be the week after an All-Ireland defeat, perhaps because fans are optimistic of seeing better days sooner rather than later.

The results of our poll have revealed that almost 85% of Kerry supporters believe that Sam Maguire will return to the Kingdom in 2024.

HOMECOMING

Speaking at the team’s homecoming in Killarney on Monday, O’Connor said his team would be “back again with renewed determination next year”. When his turn to speak came around, Clifford apologised to O’Connor and co. for not getting the job done, before also looking ahead to next season.

“[We’re] very sorry to ye that we weren’t able to deliver yesterday, but hopefully we can continue to build on this and go and right the wrongs next year.”

A 46th-minute goal by Paddy Small helped Dublin to turn the tide and overcome Kerry in the 2023 All-Ireland football final at Croke Park on Sunday. The Kingdom led by three points before Small’s deflected shot wrongfooted Shane Ryan and although they responded well by reopening their three-point advantage, the defending champions ceded control in the final quarter.

Jack O’Connor’s men ran out of steam offensively after that post-goal spurt as four straight points at the other end gave Dublin a late lead.

Poor execution in front of the posts was fatal as far as Kerry were concerned. Dublin held on to claim their ninth All-Ireland in 13 years.

With the rain pouring down and neither defence in generous form, scores were difficult to come by. Kerry had managed just four points to Dublin’s six with the half-time whistle looming, but then a majestic assist by David Clifford from the corner flag to the danger zone teed up Paul Geaney for the game’s opening goal.

Geaney had missed an earlier opportunity and he looked to have fumbled this one too but to his credit he recovered and converted to send Kerry in two points to the good.

The game opened up a little in the second half as points by David Clifford (two), Paudie Clifford and Paul Geaney helped Kerry to manufacture some breathing space. They led by three af-

Eamonn Fitzgerald reflects on Kerry’s devastating two-point defeat to Dublin

On Sunday last Kerry came up agonisingly short of retaining the Sam Maguire. Instead of David Clifford mounting those hallowed steps of the Hogan Stand, it was James McCarthy writing himself, Mick Fitzsimons and Stephen Cluxton into the record books as the only players to win nine Celtic Crosses. That will stick in the crá of Kerry players and supporters who relished for many years the fact that some of O’Dwyer’s stars from the Golden Years won eight.

How did Kerry lose this one? Why did they lose it at the death? After all, they were all square with the Dubs in the final straight but late points by Mannion and Rock edged Kerry out in that frantic six minutes of time added on.

The ‘why’ is always more difficult to pin down, even with the proverbial wisdom garnered in hindsight. The hurler on the ditch goes for the simplistic answers. If only this was done, if only the selectors made better decisions in the cauldron of an All-Ireland final, with over 82,000 supporters, mostly partisan, watching live and millions tuned in worldwide via GAAGO, RTÉ and, for the first time, BBC. We see what we want to see and usually blame the ref, selectors and certain players. Those Kerry boys are hurting and that hurt will linger long in their minds. They do not deserve to be lambasted.

IMPRESSED

I was hugely impressed by the Kerry defence overall who did their job so well. Referee Gough was intent in letting the game flow, allowing tough tackling. For the most part Kerry flew on one wing at

midfield and the belief that Jack Barry always nullified the influence of Dublin star Brian Fenton will be re-assessed after Sunday’s result. Not that Fenton dominated but he did glide through unhindered for two valuable points. Wearers of geansaís 10 to 15 remind us of the curate’s egg, good in patches but also wasteful. People watching the game on TV may not have realised that weather conditions were factors in wasteful shooting. Anyone who has ever played in Croke Park remembers that the Davin, Hogan and Cusack stands block the flight of the wind and the open Hill becomes a funnel, if the wind come from that direction.

That does not fully explain why the best footballer I have seen became central to Kerry’s woes. No one has done more for Fossa, East Kerry and Kerry to win titles at the highest levels than David Clifford. On Sunday last he shot three points and several wides, the most crucial and painful of all were the three late attempts. Some of those were well within his capability and some were shots that no other player in Ireland would even try. His misses were painful for Kerry supporters. They were

excruciating for himself. On any other day he would have scored those, even the impossible ones like he did in last year’s All-Ireland final. In the preview of the game in last week’s column, I wrote that the heart said Kerry to win but the head said Dublin would win. Getting that correct gave no joy. St David, patron of the Welsh, didn’t always control the destiny of his people and we are reliably informed that Homer nodded. King David wasn’t at his best on Sunday last. I felt that Kerry were too dependent on their captain to shoot anything from six to nine points, paving the way for victory.

GOALS

Kerry scored their only goal at the most appropriate time just before half time in the 37th minute. David Clifford had nowhere to go, blocked off by two defenders close to the end line under the Hill.

He threaded a sublime foot pass directly across to Paul Geaney. Geaney then fumbled it but to his credit he regained composure and beat Cluxton for the first time in so many championship years. Geaney’s goal put Kerry ahead at halftime. Kerry were in a good position, but I knew that Dublin would come strong and it was only a case of when Dessie would

got away

unleash his prize arsenal of McCaffrey, Scully, McMahon and more if needed on the final furlong.

In the 46th minute Kerry were turned over, yielding a very significant goal in their fightback. Lady Luck is with you or against you. Unfortunately she did us no favours in this final. Gavin White had his usual fine game but his pass was intercepted by the marauding Colm Basquel, who delivered smartly to Small. Despite a last-ditch effort by Paul Murphy to block the kick, the leather ricocheted past his clubmate Shane Ryan.

All the momentum was with Small and at that range the Kerry keeper had no chance. Instead of Kerry kicking on, all of a sudden Dublin were back in the game. Two forwards stood out in the second half. Paudie Clifford was his old self, driving at the Dublin defence with that quicksilver ciotóg delivering passes and scoring three great points from play.

In fact, Kerry were three points ahead on three occasions, but they failed to kick on to four points and that is a hell of a different mountain to climb for the chasers. McCaffrey came in after 48 minutes,

but there was no budge from the Kerry management until the 55th minute when referee Gough made a controversial call. The ball went in between Clifford and Fitzsimons and both ended up on the ground. The ref clearly pointed a signal for a free in, just a tap over which would put Kerry two points clear. When I saw Gough going in to consult with his umpires my worst fears were realised. As outlined here last week Gough’s umpires are his father, brother, uncle and cousin. To the consternation of the majority, the ref reversed his earlier decision, gave both players yellow cards and instead of an easy point for Kerry he opted for a hop ball. Ironically, Dublin won that hop ball transferred it very quickly down field to Paul Mannion, their ace marksman in that second half, who scored yet another equalising point.

THE STRETCH

Instinctively, two ideas merged in my head. Instead of Kerry being two points ahead, Dublin were level once more, with 15 minutes left in normal time. The buzz phrase for this time in a game is ‘coming down the stretch’, reminding me of the horse hitting the two-furlong mark in the Killarney Race Couse. From here in is all that matters to claim the big prize and there is no solace in being pipped by a short head. Winner takes all. The prize jockey on the best horse will time his run and get up past the winning post. Equally significant was the dreadful fact that Kerry never led again in the remaining 21 minutes. Fenton scored his second point, but Killian Spillane responded with

an excellent point from a good distance. Who would blink first?

Cahersiveen native Gerry Grogan informed all over the PA that there would be at least six minutes added on. Ó Beaglaoich came in for Paul Murphy, Micheál Burns for Stephen O’Brien (who had been excellent for 58 minutes), and Adrian Spillane came in for Dara Moynihan. Countdown by the minute. 74: Ó Beaglaoich loses possession going forward and Basquel must score a goal but he is denied by Mícheál Burns with a superb block down. Within seconds Ryan reaches up over the crossbar to save a point but up pops Mannion, scoring his fifth point.

75: There is a chance of an equaliser but David Clifford pulls his shot narrowly wide.

76: McCaffrey sets up the attack. Basquel is fouled and Dean Rock has an easy free to tap over. Game over. Dublin win 1-15 to 1-13.

So many of the disgruntled Kerry sup-

porters blamed the ref for Kery’s defeat, especially when he reversed his decision. The advice he got from his umpires was they were both at it. No blame to Gough for that decision and the basis on which he changed his mind.

RED CARD

Referees are human and all humans err.

In my view he made one huge mistake. Dublin captain McCarthy lashed out with the full force high elbow into the face of Seánie O’Shea. Even in rugby it would have warranted a straight red. That and another deliberate foul should have made it a short game for the Dublin captain who went on to win his ninth All-Ireland. Seánie O’Shea, who was playing so well in the early stages, was badly shaken and lost momentum.

Imagine Dublin down to 14 men for three quarters of the game. Rudderless without Captain James.

That incident, along with the wasteful wides and the gifted goal, compounded Kerry’s difficulties and ultimately influenced the outcome, more so than any other decision. The game took a different turn.

Significantly, Dublin scored strategically coming down the straight, seven points to Kerry’s two. I was hoping to God that Kerry would have lofted some direct high ball into Clifford. Even the Holy Mary types would have put pressure on Dublin in those greasy conditions. All captain David wanted was one.

LOAD

Wanted: at least two more forwards, scoring forwards. Spread the load and ease the overload on Captain David. The loss was painful for the Kerry spectators, but nothing like the pain of the players, a pain that will linger on not just to the end of summer (whenever the rain stops) but into winter too.

This was one that got away. Painful.

GOAT: Despite having one of the greatest careers in sports history, Michael Jordan's record was far from perfect.

Clifford can find comfort in Jordan’s words of wisdom

In a TV advert for Nike in 1997, Michael Jordan spoke about failure.

"I’ve missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. Twenty-six times I’ve been trusted to take the game-winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed."

By '97, Jordan was already considered one of greatest sportspeople of all time.

He had won five championships with the Chicago Bulls and his reputation for being a big game player who delivered in clutch moments was legendary. But, as he noted in that Nike ad, his record was far from perfect.

Observing a disconsolate David Clifford as he sat on the wet grass following

Kerry's heartbreaking defeat to Dublin, I wondered if he was familiar with Jordan's piece of wisdom.

I'm sure he is, although at the time he probably had nothing in his head but the shot for a point he missed late on. Or maybe the goal chance he blasted wide a little earlier. On a good day, he would have converted those opportunities with apparent ease. Sadly for him and for Kerry, Sunday was one of those rare days that wasn't so good.

Even so, he deserves credit. One of Clifford's most admirable traits is his willingness to shoulder massive responsibility, even when the team is struggling or when things aren't going his way. He has done it throughout the 2023 season, which is a remarkable psychological feat

in itself but even more so when you consider that his mother, Ellen, died in May (on the eve of the Munster final, in which he kicked 2-6).

He was well marked by Mick Fitzsimons yesterday but he kept showing and kept shooting, desperately hoping to drag his team over the line. Even at the highest level, some players go hiding from time to time. Never Clifford. By a normal player's standards, he actually did fine. Apart from some bad wides and a couple of turnovers, he kicked three points and set up Paul Geaney's goal with a wondrous assist. But Clifford isn't a normal player and he isn't judged by normal standards.

Back home, Kerry fans are gutted about the outcome but the 24-year-old won't

be getting any abuse from them. The most common remark I've heard from supporters in the past 24 hours is "we wouldn't have been there (in the final) without him", which is undoubtedly true. A lot of cameras were focused on the Fossa man at full time but they could have panned to any Kerry player and found a regretful expression. With a wet ball and a slippery pitch to contend with, not to mention an excellent opponent in Dublin, errors were commonplace. No Kerryman was flawless. Clifford's mistakes are magnified, though, which is understandable. To many, he is the GOAT. All eyes are on him.

Today, those misses will be replayed far more often in his own head than anywhere else. He will try to figure out what went wrong and agonise over the result like all runners-up do. Maybe he can find some crumb of comfort in Jordan's words. All the greats fail. In fact, they fail over and over and over again. Ultimately, that's why they succeed.

LADIES UPDATE: Our U10 girls welcomed Firies into Direen on Tuesday night last and both teams played some lovely football. It's great to see so many girls playing and enjoying the game. Also, thanks to our two young referees who did a fine job. On a beautiful evening in Direen last Tuesday our younger White Team in under 12s faced St Senan’s where the game flowed in our favour from the start. The away team made us work hard for a while, but our backs did their job, and our forwards got the necessary scores that kept us in the lead until the final whistle. This was our last game in the County League and the improvement in every girl is immense. We also said goodbye this evening to one of our players who is returning to Spain with her family after playing with us for 2 years. She took to football so naturally and was an asset to our team. We wish her well in the future. The Legion U12 Girls Green team travelled to Finuge / St Senan’s for their final match of the County League on Friday night. The hosts were quickest out of the blocks and raced into a big lead at half. It was a lead they were never going to relinquish despite Legion’s work rate. The second half fared better for our girls who were up

for the challenge and put together some really good passages of play but in the end the goal difference at half proved too much to overcome. Thank you to our U12 White teammates who made a good contribution to this evening match and thank you to all the Legion supporters who travelled the distance. Thank you as well to the Ref and to Finuge /St. Senan’s for hosting the match. We now await the results from other games to see who the Green team plays in the Finals. Our u14 girls’ teams concluded the group stages of their County League campaign with 2 home games. The Green team, competing in Division 3, welcomed Churchill to Direen on a damp Sunday evening. On Monday the White team playing in Division 6 hosted Laune Rangers on a much more pleasant evening for football. In greasy conditions on Sunday, both teams served up an exciting end to end contest. Despite a spirited second half comeback from the hosts, Churchill got the all-important goals at crucial stages to seal the win. Goals also proved to be the difference between the sides in Monday evening’s clash with Laune Rangers. The girls used the breeze to their advantage in the second period to raise enough green flags to claim the two points on offer. Thanks to the visitors from Churchill & Laune Rangers for two sporting games and to the referees officiating on both evenings. Well played to all the girls in action and thanks to the U12 girls who played the game on Monday. We now await results from other games to see if our teams progress to the semi-final stages of the competition in the coming weeks.

Dr Crokes GAA

LGFA U14: We welcomed John Mitchells to Lewis Road on Monday evening for a top of the table clash in our County League Division, looking maintain our 100% record. Despite conceding a goal after 10 seconds, the girls settled into the game and soon we were moving the ball and kicking some great points. We went in up the bare minimum at half time and were facing a strong breeze in the second half. We need not have worried as the girls played brilliantly against the wind and we ran out convincing winners on a scoreline of 0:09 to 1:02. This was a great team display, with all 18 players contributing to a fine win. We have finished on top of the table and go into a Semi-Final full of confidence.

SUMMER CAMP: Our annual summer camp will take place on Monday 21st August to Wednesday 23rd August. Keep an eye on our social media pages as we have more details to follow.

RESULT: Milltown/Castlemaine 'B' took on An Ghaeltacht 'B' last Tuesday in the Mid Kerry Junior Football League Shield Final in Lispole. An Ghaeltacht led 2-6 to 0-7 at the half-time interval in a tightly contested opening half. The West Kerry side dominated large spells of the second half however despite Milltown/Castlemaine bagging an early goal and, in the end, they emerged victorious on a score of 5-14 to 2-09. Hard luck to the players and management team involved.

RESULT: Mid Kerry's Minor side travelled to Spa in Killarney on Tuesday evening for Round 3 of the Keane's Supervalu County Minor Football Championship. They took on East Kerry who had won both their fixtures thus far in the competition and there was nothing to separate either side at the half-time interval as they retired to the break level. In the second half, East Kerry looked destined for victory when leading by eight points at one stage. However, Mid Kerry showed great resilience and battled back to take home a one-point victory on a final score of 2-14 to 2-13. Well done to the team and management, especially our own Milltown/Castlemaine representatives. The side collected three points from three games (1 win, 1 draw and 1 defeat) but unfortunately failed to make the knockout stages as East Kerry and Austin Stacks both had four points each so took the top two spots in Group One.

NATIONAL U16 MATCHPLAY: While we were all disappointed with what transpired in Croke Park on Sunday afternoon, prior to throw-in we were cele-

brating a truly momentous achievement for the club in Lakeside in Templemore. Both of the Boys titles were won by club members as Brian McCarthy followed his father Derry in winning a National title 19 years after our Vice President won the Men’s event on home soil back in 2004. Brian beat Nathan Cronin in the semi-finals in what was a difficult experience for our two U16 Officers no doubt. He defeated Listowel’s A Jay Barrett in the first ever all Kerry National Matchplay final to become the club’s first ever winner of this event. Ronan Bennett meanwhile won the Plate event becoming the club’s third ever winner of this event after both Nathan (2022) and Eoin O’Riordan Looney (2019). Well done to both Brian and Ronan on their wins as we thank both Derry and Gearóid Cronin for looking after all 11 players from the club who travelled to the event.

BOG WALKS: Details of these walks which are rich in a variety of flora & fauna, are in the “Kilcummin Walks” brochures (free of charge) which are available at the Rural Development Office and the Post Office. Why not pick one up and it may inspire you to discover this beautiful amenity which is enjoyed by many already. Please be mindful of keeping this a clean, safe and friendly place to enjoy by bringing your rubbish home, keeping your dog(s) on a lead when you come in contact with fellow walkers or wildlife and respecting the local landowners’ property.
