Concern over increase in number of town centre businesses closing

A warning by the Restaurants Association of Ireland that it expects “a wave of food business closures” hit home in Killarney this week. The RAI said that 280 restaurants have closed in Ireland over the last six months due to high running costs and the increase in the VAT rate. "We're facing a crisis in our industry at the moment in terms of closures, and

we're seeking immediate action from the Government to intervene in terms of saving our industry and saving restaurants and coffee shops across the country," said RAI Chief executive Adrian Cummins.

Celtic Donoughts closed this week

SOCIAL MEDIA The lack of accommodation in the town is being laid bare on social media this week, but it is revealing a nasty side to the crisis. Many people are posting on social media searching for property to either rent or buy. Many posts are made by people working in the area that need somewhere to live. If they can’t get accommodation the will not be able to take up the jobs on offer to them. Last week we reported on Garret’s Restaurant. It will close for good later this month as they cannot recruit chefs.

Last week, the Killarney Advertiser revealed that Garret’s Restaurant on College St will cease trading at the end of this month due to the unavailability of trained chefs. Since that story was published two more food related businesses in the town centre have ceased trading. The Underground Café at Market Cross closed its doors over the weekend while Celtic Donoughts on Plunkett St also

ceased trading this week. "We feel we are going to see hundreds if not thousands of businesses close across the state in the next 12 months, if the Government don't intervene and provide a rescue package for our industry as soon as they can," added Mr Cummins. Unconfirmed reports say that retail units in Killarney also face closure in the comming weeks.

Fixtures and fittings were removed from The Underground Cafe in the last few days

Killarney of the "un-welcomes" Previously we have reported that hotels, like the Europe, is to build its own staff quarters. Many people looking for accommodation are from overseas. These posts, in some instances, are attracting negative comments from other users. It prompted one social media user, a Killarney person now living overseas, to ask a very serious question. ”As someone who has lived away during our own recessions, I would have also posted on Facebook pages in the area I had moved to looking for help in regards

to accommodation. Never in all that time did I receive, smart comments, angry faced reactions or a general reaction of being unwanted in that place. “It’s understandable people are unhappy with so much of what is going on within this town but [these social media pages] are supposed to show the quality of who we are as a group. From an outsiders perspective, this does not seem like a very obliging community and it’s a shame that this once welcoming place has now become so unwelcoming.”

Ain’t no mountain Memorial walk high enough for Joe for popular jarvey Elite ultra runner, Joe O’Leary from Lissivigeen has conquered the most difficult endurance race in the UK.

He won the Montane Winter Spine Challenger North in emphatic fashion taking over 16 hours off the existing course record. The Montane Winter Spine Challenger North is a non-stop 232-km ultra-marathon encompassing the entire length of the Pennine Way. The Montane Spine Races are widely regarded amongst the toughest and brutal endurance races in the world. “It’s like a dream come true only I couldn’t even have dreamt it,” Joe told event organisers at the finish. Joe finished third in the Montane Winter Spine Challenger South in 2022, and third in the full Montane Winter Spine Race last year. It’s been a bitterly cold event throughout, something which has obviously created issues for many runners. “I would rather be cold and miserable than too hot,” he joked. sheet ice, and slabs covered in black ice everywhere. But none of it was enough to stop Joe. “Joe is a pleasure to have on a Spine Race event. Positive and friendly throughout he is always popular with the Checkpoint Teams. Massive congratulations from everyone at the Montane Spine Race. An astonishing performance and a well-deserved result,” said Montane Spine Race Organisers

One of Killarney’s most-popular rowers and jarveys will be remembered at a special walk organised by the Kerry branch of the Irish Kidney Association on Sunday. Hugh Murhill passed away in 2020. He is best remembered as a master oarsman with Muckross Rowing Club but was also very popular in horse circles in the town. The Kerry branch of the Irish Kidney Association is organising the ‘Hugh Murhill Memorial Walk’ which will start at at 1.00pm at Tigh Mary Donals –formerly the Whitegates Hotel – on Muckross Road. The Memorial Walk will take place in Killarney on Sunday, January 21 at 2.00pm and participants can choose between a 5k circuit or a 10k route – each taking in Muckross Abbey and Muckross House. Entry fees are set at €20.

“Refreshment’s and Music afterwards in Tigh Mary Donald’s. Raffle to follow with lots of spot prizes to win. Everyone is welcome, bring along your pets,” said PRO Irene Hurley.

Kevin Leahy set for another Arctic adventure Killarney adventure racers Kevin Leahy is going to attempt to ski 475km across the artic next month. The proprietor of the Black Sheep Hostel on New Street is no stranger to adventures races in the world’s coldest climates. Back in 2022 he contested both the Lapland Arctic Ultra and the Yukon Arctic Ultra. Those two adventure races resulted in the documentary ‘1000kms of chaos’. Filmed over two years by local videographer Adrian McCarthy, against the challenging restrictions of the pandemic, the documentary provided a deep insight into what it takes for an amateur Irish Ultra Runner to train, prepare and complete the toughest challenge anyone could imagine. Not one to rest on his laurels, the long-dis-

tance runner is set to do it all again only this time on skis. He has entered the Artic Spine Race which gets under way in Kungsleden, Sweden on February 6. “Having never skied more than 30km in one go this promises to be yet another huge challenge for my body, mind and spirit,” he said. He is competing in the event to raise funds and awareness for AsIAm - Ireland's Autism charity, “I've been ambassador for this charity for two years and now and I'm constantly amazed by the changes I see them making in peoples’ lives,” he added. “Being neurodiverse, I feel it's very important to support this great charity in their mission to create a more inclusive society.”

NEWS 19.01.2024 Sliabh Luachra and Kerry’s theatre and amateur drama scene after the Civil War Duhallow History Book to be published after 100 years 12

Cló Staire Chiarraí has announced that the History of the Parishes of Rathmore, Gneeveguilla and Knocknagree written by Fr William Ferris in the mid 1920s is finally to be published after 100 years. After three years work on the original manuscript by editor Brendan McCarthy, the book will finally see the light of day in Spring 2024. Second in the series of Fr Ferris’s Parish Histories, the History of the Parishes of Rathmore, Gneeveguilla and Knocknagree is a unique record of the rich history, culture and heritage of the Sliabh Luachra/Duhallow area. Much of this material was collected by Fr Ferris from parishioners in the course of station masses in the parishes and as such is no dry academic chronicle. It is history as lived and recounted by the ordinary people of Sliabh Luachra and Duhallow and their authentic voices come through clearly.

In addition, in the Introduction to the book, the Editor provides a biographical portrait of Fr Ferris who was a fascinating individual in his own right. “If you come from these parishes or if any of your forebears came from this area, then it is likely that your family features in this book. You may discover where they lived, where they went to school, who their teachers were, who their landlord or middleman was, how they were affected by the Famine, whether they were evicted, whether they were involved in the Land War, “ said editor McCarthy. With a limited print-run, this fully-indexed book is destined to be a collector’s item.

Local MEP Kelly condemns "indiscriminate" bombing of Gaza Sean Kelly, MEP for Ireland South, has condemned the "indiscriminate" bombing of Gaza and called for an immediate ceasefire, in a speech to the European Parliament in Strasbourg on Tuesday evening. MEP Kelly expressed his deep concern. "The atrocities committed on October 7 against innocent civilians were repug-

nant, but what we are seeing now has entered another stratosphere in terms of ordinary people, men, women, and children being killed, starved, or left homeless," he said. Rejecting discussions around geopolitics and strategic interests, Kelly raised the human cost of the conflict: "I have little time for such details and

explanations when the reality is that a whole population is being punished for the actions of terrorists,” he added. Kelly highlighted the immense devastation to infrastructure and the population in Gaza. "The military campaign in Gaza is among the deadliest and most destructive in recent history,” he told the parliament.

"I support the Irish government’s efforts to intensify the pressure for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire, and I call on everyone here present to do the same." "I am against Hamas, I am against Anti-Semitism - but I will always stand up for the innocent. Israel has the right to exist; it has the right to get its hostages home safe. But innocent Palestinians have the right to life, not just to live - but a life," Kelly said. "Along with the release of hostages, we need a ceasefire, and we need it now. Without it, no progress can be made, and we will never have peace. A proper, and fair, two state solution must be revisited,”

St John of God Services could be transferred to HSE

More needs to be done to recruit and retain Gardaí Sinn Féin spokesperson on Justice, Pa Daly TD, has accused the government of not going far enough in their new Garda recruitment campaign. Teachta Daly said: “The latest Garda recruitment campaign is a crucial one, with resignations at historic highs and recruitment targets continually missed. I understand the latest group were merely given an induction session before Christmas, meaning

they counted towards the new recruits for that year, despite not substantively starting their training until this month. “News of the increased training allowance, which we called for in our Alternative Budget, and the raising of the upper age limit are important developments. We are still awaiting the publication of the Garda Reserve regulations, which would help to support members and government policies in housing continue to cause challenges for retention and recruitment..

Independent T.D Michael Healy Rae has called on the Minister for Health and the HSE to immediately deal with the funding crisis for St John of God services. If the HSE do not make a commitment in advance of the Board Meeting that takes place on January 24 the board will recommend commencing the process of transfer of responsibility for the service provision to the HSE. Michael Healy Rae has called on the Minister for Health to intervene on this

serious situation and to address the deficit and maintain the financial and operational sustainability of the services provided by St John of God. “If the Minister does not intervene it will have a detrimental effect on the 8,000 children and adults who are using these services, their families and the 3000 dedicated staff, all of whom are committed to the provision of the services and supports to the service users,” he said.

Killarney Meithal tackling “an ecological disaster right on our doorstep” It is well-known by now that our National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is facing a significant ecological threat posed by the invasive shrub Rhododendron. | By Chris Davies The non-native species, was introduced to Killarney for decorative purposes in the 19th century but it is now wreaking havoc. Peter O’ Toole, a retired park ranger has spent over 40 years researching and dealing with the impacts of the plant. I visited The Blue Pool last week to catch up with Peter and some of the other Killarney Meithal volunteers to learn a bit more about the problem. Peter describes the issue as “an ecological disaster right on our doorstep”, but how many of us locals really understand the issue at play, or what is at stake if left untouched.

BACKGROUND

“Rhododendron ponticum is a large evergreen shrub that was introduced into the British Isles from Iberia during the 18th century. Rhododendron ponticum is one of more than 900 types of rhododendron. Most of these are native to Asia but they are also very common across the Ibearen Penensuila (Spain & Portugal) which is where our species originated from”, Peter explains. He believes that the particular shrub we have here in Killarney is a hybridised version of the Ibearian species and a North American species called Rhododendron Catawbiense. He has affectionally named it “Frankenstein Rhododendron” due to its problematic nature. From afar, the plant can actually be quiet easy on the eye. The thick evergreen shrub grows meters tall and has thick dark green leaves. In the Summer you will notice the large clusters of purple or pink flowers illuminating the foots of the

mountains and woodlands. So why are we trying to get rid of it? “The plant has a thick foliage which blocks the sunlight from hitting the woodland floor. The big dark green leaves allow for only 2% of sunlight to penetrate to the ground. This means that nothing below it can survive. It has the potential to wipe out bird life, insects and small mammals if left to spread. It also prevents the regeneration of our native oak trees. The plant grows so wild that it doesn’t allow room for anything else to grow. With no room for other flora and fauna to prosper, the park's biodiversity is threatened” - Peter explains. The species we have here in Killarney is extremely durable. Unlike species that are growing in other countries, frost, fire and drought can help limit the plants growth but in the Killarney National park and with this particular species, none of these methods work. Peter told me he spent many years researching the best way to kill the plant and the only success they have had is through a Stem Injection.

SOUNDS SIMPLE RIGHT?

Well it’s not. There are a number laborious steps and precautions the group must take during the process and when all of the invasive species is removed , there is still more work to be done to maintain the woodlands. “We begin by cutting back the strong Rhododendron. We then give each plant a stem injection which kills it at the root. It can take between 10-12 months before the plant is ready to be cleared. Clearing the plant involves cutting and pulling

the plants out of the ground. Each area of woodland must then be fenced off to keep the deer population out, giving the woodland the best chance of naturally regenerating. It can take up to 15 years before new life is visible in the cleared areas”. Despite ongoing efforts, controlling rhododendron infestation remains a challenging task due to the shrub's rapid growth and resilience. The vastness of the park and the remoteness of some areas makes the manual labour even more Challenging. Peter believes that over two-thirds of the mature Rhododendron has now been cut back, but it could be another 20-30 years before they clear the rest.

VOLUNTEER LED GROUP

Killarney Meithal was first established by former Fine Gael Minister Jimmy Deenihan in 2014 and since then, the environmental volunteer group has exceeded all expectations of what can be achieved with a small group of custodians who care deeply about their local environment. The group are well supported by the NPWS and the Trustees of Muckross House who provide food, equipment and training to the volunteers. I landed down to the Blue Pool at about 11am last Tuesday, just as the team were taking a break. There was a great atmosphere around the fire pit where volunteers enjoyed a hot cup of tea, a sausage role and a bit of banter. I landed down in a shirt, jeans and a lovely clean pair white runners, the gang were not long letting me know I wasn’t best dressed for the occasion (all in good fun). I wasn’t surprised to bump into a former teacher of mine Michael Gleeson. The former councillor and town mayor was always passionate about the environment

and has been volunteering his time for a couple of years now. He explained to me that the group currently meets twice a week, from 9am - 12.30pm on Tuesdays and Sundays. There are about 90 members in total and they usually get between 20-40 people turning out each morning. “It is a great way to get out in the fresh air and give back. We are so lucky to have this amazing amenity on our doorstep and we shouldn’t take it for granted. We are always looking for new volunteers to come and help out and I would encourage anyone that can, to get involved” Michael explained Michael had somewhere he needed to be later that morning so he headed off shortly after our chat. The volunteers explained that this is what was nice about volunteering with Killarney Meithal. “If you can’t make it on any given morning, or if you have to shoot off early there is no issue. There is no big commitment or pressure to attend. If you can chip in on the days that suit, the help is always appreciated. If you are passionate about the environment or if you are just looking to give back to the community, we would recommend getting involved”. The group recently welcomed Men’s Shed volunteers from neighbouring counties and plans are also in motion to join forces with TY students from local secondary schools . Peter explained to me that their work in The Blue Pool is almost complete but he has little time for reflection, the fight will go on with the group soon to begin tackling 40 acres in Abbey Wood which is overrun with 70-80 year old Rhododendron. If you are interested in getting involved you can contact the group via their Facebook page.

MEET COMFORT FOR CHEMO KERRY:

A small charity with huge ambition

| By Chris Davies

Sometimes you cross paths with a person that is so impressive, you can’t help but be taken aback by their determination, courage and drive, but how often is it that you meet two such people in the same day? Well that is what happened to me last Saturday morning after meeting Mary Fitzgerald and Bríd O’Connor of Comfort for Chemo Kerry. While the pair will probably curse me for saying it, they are both remarkable women who deserve a huge amount of credit for playing their part in getting the charity to where it is today.

EXPERIENCE

Mary’s background is in nursing. She has spent the majority of her career looking after cancer patients and their families. She currently works in a managerial role within University Hospital Kerry. The pressures of working in a HSE setting at the moment would warrant an article in itself but I was meeting with Mary on Saturday to discuss other business, mainly her role as Chairperson of ‘Comfort for Chemo, a relatively new charity with huge ambitions. Mary and her teams vision is to create stand-alone, state of the art chemotherapy treatment facility for the people of Kerry and beyond. With a wealth of experience at the coalface of cancer treatment, she has seen firsthand the difficult journeys that patients and their families go through following a cancer diagnosis and her passion for the project is clear in the way she talks about their plans. They say that nursing is a vocation and not a job, and having met with Mary, I can testify to this. Mary was joined by Bríd O’Connor. A proud Ardshanavooley lady who is now raising her young family in Firies. Bríd is a History teacher by trade but she is also the patient advocate for the charity. Having had many personal battles with the illness, you would struggle to find a more appropriate person to speak on behalf of those diagnosed or recovering from cancer. Bríd’s cancer diagnosis came in March of 2018, just 15 months after her mother was diagnosed. Tragically, her mother’s illness was deemed terminal and she passed away in 2020. For a time they were both patients on the same chemo ward. “Looking back it was such a difficult time, but it gave me a dual perspective. I knew Mary Fitzgerald (left) and Bríd O’Connor (right) of Comfort for Chemo Kerry who met with the Killarney Advertiser.

This really drove me to seek better services for patients and their families” Bríd underwent TCH, an aggressive treatment of chemotherapy which combines different medicines. Her treatment involved six cycles of chemo, one every three weeks, and no sooner had she recovered from one bout, she was heading back to UHK for the next. Mary explained that chemo treatment takes everything out of the patient… “The treatment is toxic, you are basically using powerful chemicals to kill fast-growing cells in your body, it’s just horrible. I can still remember my first experience on a chemotherapy ward as a young nurse, I was doing night shift in St. James’s Hospital in Dublin and the patients were just vomiting all night, it takes everything out of you” Bríd explained that as a cancer survivor you are never fully out of the woods but she is in good health now and wants to give back through Comfort for Chemo.

GIVING BACK

“Having gone through it myself, I understand why a stand-alone facility like this is so badly needed in Kerry. While I was very grateful for the brilliant care I received, the current facilities at UHK are sub-standard. My belief is that you don’t run out of a burning fire, but you come back with pales of water. So that’s why I am here, to ensure we get the very best cancer care facilities”. Mary explained that in 2001, 831 patients were treated in a 6 bed ward in UHK, a setting that could only be described as a “Shoe Box”. Last year 5,565 people were treated for cancer in UHK, a six fold increase. The chemotherapy unit was moved around over the past few years and during covid they had to share a space with palliative care patients. While they were grateful to be facilitated by the palliative care team at a difficult time for everyone in healthcare, it was far from the ideal setting for patients to receive treatment. “When I first started out in cancer care there was just one treatment for the disease, and it either worked or it didn’t. Thankfully cancer screening has improved dramatically since then, and there are many different treatments now. Prostate and breast cancers in particular can be effectively managed and have a good survival rate. However, with such a large increase in the numbers of people we care for now, the facilities are not adequate” Mary explained.

PLANS

When the pair told me the news that they had just received the architects plans for the new building on the grounds of UHK,

New state of the art facility planned for UHK campus

My belief is that you don’t run out of a burning fire, but you come back with pails of water. they could be forgiven for getting a bit emotional, it was clear to see how much it meant to them both. The road to this point had been bumpy at times and they had many difficult conversations during covid in relation to what was realistically achievable, but it is a testament to the ladies uncompromising nature that the charity rode the storm and is now finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. The new facility is modelled on Scandinavian Healthcare, which is widely regarded as one of the most progressive in the world. The stand alone, state of the art building is designed with privacy and dignity to the fore, something Brid is steadfast about given her own personal experience. “When I was going through my treatment and recovery I was walking through the main hospital wards. Kerry is not a small county but everyone knows everyone and I would often bump into people going in and out. It was difficult having to explain to people who know me why I was there. There was one time I bumped into an old school friend, she was being discharged after giving birth to her child and I was going in for another bout of chemo. It is hard to explain the emotions that brought up for me”. Mary also explained that the new facility will have its own compounding unit where all the drug treatments are made on site. UHK currently have to buy in the drugs from elsewhere and it can sometimes lead to delays. It will also provide for counselling and support rooms which will not only sup-

port patients before and during treatment but also provide aftercare support. “What many people don’t realise is that after you recover from cancer, there is an associated trauma attached, and it can take time to get over that. Our new facility will have a full time ‘survivorship nurse specialist’ and counselling support to help patients recover from the emotional aftermath of the illness” Mary explains.

FUNDRAISING

Mary and Brid explained that the money raised to this point is ‘bricks and mortar’ and the next round of fundraising planned is to kit the facility out. We joked that Brid is the ‘Franc’ of the interior design project as she is adamant that they won’t be ‘cheaping out’ or taking shortcuts just to get it done. “We have one chance to do it so we are adamant that it has to be done right and to the highest standards” If you haven’t figured already, Bríd is not the kind of woman to just talk the talk, she is walking the walk too having raised over €20,000 herself through a book she wrote called “Spark”. Prompted by the loss of her mother and her own journey through cancer, she wanted to find stories that others can find comfort in and draw hope from in your lowest hour. The book is a beautiful collection of conversations with many familiar faces around Kerry including Billy Keane, Louise Galvin, and Don O’Neill amongst others. The incredible contributors to “Spark” share stories of grief, serious-illness, life altering events and challenges. Each contrib-

utor discloses what resets them. Mary explains that over the past few years they have been lucky to get incredible support from the most amazing fundraisers and Killarney has given generously to the cause. “Last year, Killarney local Karl McMahon and his Killarney Celtic led committee organised a memorial charity match between Celtic and Kerry FC on the 10th anniversary of the his late friend and club legend John Doyle. They raised a fantastic €45,000 for us and we are so grateful to everyone who supported the event”. Mary recalls a much more modest donation after covid which really moved her, “As you know, during covid, everything shut down. An elderly lady came to us with a donation as things opened back up again. She told me she used to get her hair done every couple of weeks and when her salon closed down during covid she began to put that bit of money aside for us. That is the kind of support and generosity in Kerry that gives us the belief that we can deliver this much needed facility” Did you know that 1 in 2 people will have a cancer diagnosis at some stage in their life and that in Ireland more than 40,000 new cases of cancer or related tumours are diagnosed each year? With that in mind Comfort for Chemo have a big fundraiser coming up on February 10th. ‘A celebration of love’ is a dinner dance which has been fittingly planned around Valentine’s Day to celebrate all of the people who have used the service, are currently patients going through chemotherapy, those of whom have finished their treatment and those who cannot be present but will be remembered and paid tribute to on the night. With music provided by the popular Kerry band - Truely Diverse and DJ Chirs Shortt it promises to be a great night at the Rose hotel in Tralee. Mary has also hinted at a few special guests on the night and an amazing prize for one lucky guest on the night which they will be announcing news on very soon.

Transition year YSI Project

“Men have Mirrors Too”

Our message is simple “Men Have Mirrors Too.” Transition year Young Social Innovators project is aiming to shine a light on body image issues in young men. In an age of mounting social media pressure, students at St Brendan’s College feel it is an issue worth talking about. "Body image issues is often stereotyped as a ‘female problem,’ but we are here to dispel this myth. Men as well as women struggle with body image. According to BodyWhys one in seven men will develop an eating disorder by age 40. This is a staggering statistic and the students of St. Brendan's want to start conversations and encourage open dialogue

about these issues. "Our project hopes to break down the societal stereotypes and promote acceptance and self-love for all body types. Our vision is to help redefine beauty standards and foster a healthier relationship with our bodies. To make our vision a reality we have taken action to raise awareness about body image. Firstly, we have launched an Anatomy Accolades series. The aim of this series is to celebrate and appreciate what our amazing bodies can do for us."The students plan to climb Mount Brandon in the coming weeks to feel empowered and appreciative of the heights their bodies can reach. In addition, they have a 'Meal of the Month

' series. "We post cooking demonstrations on our social media on how to make a nutritious snacks or meal to fuel our bodies. Most recently we have designed and created a Jersey to raise funds for The Eating Disorder Association of Ireland – BodyWhys. We ensured this jersey would to be regular fit, to be inclusive for all. We hope this jersey will give comfort and confidence to anyone who wears it. We will be taking orders for the jersey next week in our school. We look forward to continuing to be innovative to help promote this issue."

St Brendan's win after penalty shootout St. Brendan's College 2 - 2 (AET) Tralee CBS

The Sem played their second group game this week against a very talented Tralee CBS side. A match that decided which team would top the group and progress to the knockout stages of the Munster Cup. The Sem first half saw both teams deadlocked. The game opened up in the second half, with both sides pressing for a goal. Ethan Clarke made some fantastic saves to keep the Tralee side out. The Sem had some great chances to score, Keane came close with a long-range effort, as well as Cryan and Jayden Hurley narrowly missing the target and Ryan Vickers hitting the crossbar. Then the Tralee side with one minute remaining in the game scored after a lovely counterattack. St Brendan's piled on the pressure, putting four players up front, and

within 30 seconds of the tip off, they were level, after a great finish from Vickers. In extra time, the Sem had a host of chances, which they could not finish, but equally Tralee CBS had their chances too. After a great strike from outside the box, the ball rebounded off the post, into the path of the on-rushing Tralee right back, and he slotted it home to make it 1-2 with two minutes remaining in extra time. Again, the Sem pushed players forward, and after an unbelievable corner which was whipped into the box by Stephen Shine, Jayden Hurley smashed his header home to make it 2-2 and take the game to a penalty shootout. St Brendan's won the shootout after a superb Ethan Clarke save and the winning penalty was scored by Adam Moynihan.

Two Irish billionaires have more wealth than 50% of the Irish population A new report by Oxfam Ireland, released ahead of the World Economic Forum's virtual Davos Agenda this week, has painted a stark picture of wealth inequality in Ireland. The report, titled "Inequality Kills," found that the richest 1% in the country hold more than a third of Ireland's financial wealth. The report also found that

the two richest Irish billionaires, have more wealth than the bottom half of the Irish population combined. Oxfam Ireland is calling on the Irish government to take action to address this widening wealth gap. The report recommends a number of measures, including introducing a wealth tax, closing tax loopholes, and ensuring that corporations pay their fair share of tax. "The scale of inequality in Ireland is staggering," said Siobhán Long, Director of Oxfam Ireland. "While the richest continue to get richer, millions of people are struggling to get by. This is not just a problem for the poor; it is a problem for

everyone. Inequality is bad for our economy, our society, and our democracy." The report also found that the COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated the wealth gap. The richest 1% saw their wealth increase by 58% during the pandemic, while the incomes of the poorest 99% fell. "The pandemic has shown that the system is rigged in favour of the wealthy," said Long. "We need to change the rules of the game so that everyone has a fair chance to succeed." Oxfam Ireland is calling on the Irish government to take urgent action to address the wealth gap in Ireland.

Second volcanic eruption in Iceland threatens Grindavik Iceland's Reykjanes Peninsula is once again experiencing volcanic activity as a second eruption commenced this week, sending lava flows towards the nearby town of Grindavík. This latest eruption, which began on January 14, marks the second volcanic event within a month in the region, following a major eruption in December. The lava flows from the current eruption have breached the protective barriers constructed to safeguard Grindavík, engulfing several homes and setting them ablaze. While no fatalities have been reported, the eruption has caused significant damage and forced the evacuation of around 3,800 residents from the town. Scientists monitoring the eruption have indicated that it may be waning, but they caution that the situation remains unpredictable. Despite the receding lava flows, the threat to Grindavík is not yet over, as molten rock continues to pose a risk to surrounding infrastructure and homes.

Cloned Rhesus Monkey thrives into adulthood Researchers in China have successfully produced a cloned rhesus monkey that has now reached adulthood. This achievement, published in the journal Nature Communications, paves the way for more advanced studies involving these primates, which share around 93% of their DNA with humans. The cloned monkey, named "ReTro" is the first of its kind to survive beyond infancy. The Chinese team behind ReTro's successful development employed a novel approach that focuses on creating a healthy placenta for the developing embryo. The placenta, an organ that provides nutrients and oxygen to the fetus,

plays a crucial role in embryonic development, and its health can significantly impact the survival of cloned offspring. The ability to produce healthy cloned rhesus monkeys holds promise for medical research. These primates are widely used in studies of human diseases, and could lead to more accurate and efficient drug testing. For instance, cloned monkeys could be used to test the safety and efficacy of new treatments for neurological disorders, such as Alzheimer's disease or Parkinson's disease. While the successful cloning of a rhesus monkey to adulthood marks a significant advancement, it also raises ethical concerns around animal welfare and the potential impact on their well-being.

Ronnie O'Sullivan post-match spat catches the headlines Ronnie O'Sullivan etched his name even deeper into snooker history this past Sunday, as he claimed his remarkable eighth Masters title with a thrilling 10-7 victory over Ali Carter in the final. This latest triumph not only extended O'Sullivan's Masters record but also brought his overall tally of Triple Crown titles to an incredible 23, further cementing his status as the greatest snooker player of all time. The 47-year-old O'Sullivan found himself trailing 6-3 after the opening session, but he displayed his trademark resilience and determination to stage a remarkable comeback. With Carter struggling to maintain his early momentum, O'Sullivan seized control of the match, compiling a series of clinical breaks and didn’t look back after. While it should have been the victory and performance everyone was talking about after the match the players got sucked in to a public spat which ended up carrying much of the headlines. In a post-match interview Ali Carter criticised the crowd at Alexandra Palace

in London and also called out 48-yearold O'Sullivan's behaviour during the match. "It's just disgusting, no one wants to say anything though do they?" "Snotting all over the floor and all that, it's outrageous behaviour from a top professional and if it gets swept under the carpet then it's not good." Ronnie then hit back with a scathing attack of his own saying, "For him to come out and trash talk me like that, everybody knows what he's like, he's got issues. Why has he got issues with me? I'm not having it. I don't care. "I will not skirt around it any more, tiptoeing on egg shells around someone like that.” "He's a nightmare. To have to play snooker against someone like that is a nightmare. [He's] not a nice person, not a nice vibe that he leaves around the table.” "He's got to go and see a counsellor or something. He's got to deal with that because that isn't any good." World Snooker are said to be reviewing the public argument and it is likely that both players will be reprimanded.

Irish beef exports to China resume amidst strengthening ties In a significant boost for the Irish beef industry, China has announced the resumption of beef imports from Ireland following a brief suspension in November 2023. The decision was made during a visit by Chinese Premier Li Qiang to Ireland. The suspension of Irish beef exports was triggered by the detection of an atypical case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), also known as mad cow disease. However, following extensive discussions and the provision of detailed technical information, China has now satisfied itself that Ireland's beef production systems remain robust and that the BSE case poses no risk to public

health. The resumption of beef exports to China is a nice boost for the Irish beef industry, which has been seeking to regain access to the lucrative market for several years. The Chinese market is considered to be one of the most promising for Irish beef, with a growing middle class with increasing disposable incomes and a growing demand for high-quality food products. The reopening of the Chinese market is expected to generate significant economic benefits for Ireland, with potential export earnings of up to €40 million per year. It will also provide a welcome boost to Irish farmers and businesses involved in the beef sector

Munsters O' Mahony to lead Ireland in Six Nations Ireland Rugby head coach Andy Farrell announced this week that Peter O'Mahony would be the new captain of the Irish national rugby team. O'Mahony, a veteran of over one hundren test matches, takes over from Johnny Sexton, who retired from international rugby following last year's Rugby World Cup. O'Mahony is a natural leader, having captained Munster at both U18 and U20 levels before assuming the role of senior captain in 2013. "Since I was a boy starting off in the game, I have always dreamed of captaining Ireland," said O'Mahony after his appointment. "To be now asked to captain Ireland ahead of the Six Nations

is without doubt one of the proudest moments of my life." Farrell praised O'Mahony's leadership qualities and said he was confident that he would lead the team to success. "He is a born leader and someone who has been an influential figure for Munster and Ireland for many years," said Farrell. "I am confident that the squad will continue to benefit from his leadership skills, both on and off the field." O'Mahony will captain Ireland in the upcoming Six Nations Championship, which begins on February 2 against France. The tournament will be a tough challenge for the Irish, but with O'Mahony at the helm, they will be confident of making a good account of themselves.

18,000 vehicles are yet to be added to the National Fleet Database Approximately 18,000 fleet and motor trader vehicles are yet to be added to the National Fleet Database (NFD), according to the Motor Insurers’ Bureau of Ireland (MIBI). The MIBI also warned that those vehicles risk being identified as uninsured and the responsible fleet owners/ managers or motor traders could be prosecuted in the District Court and subjected to fines of up to €500 per vehicle. Data for 232,859 vehicles has been uploaded to the NFD, despite the deadline for fleet and motor trader vehicles to be added passing on 30th November. This represents 93% of the estimated 250,000 fleet and motor trader vehicles operating across the country. MIBI analysis suggests that it is mostly smaller fleet and motor trade policy holders that are yet to fulfil their legal require-

ments by providing their vehicle details and who risk facing these penalties. A dedicated online database, the National Fleet Database (NFD) was launched last year to enable the collection of this information. It is maintained by the MIBI, a not-for-profit organisation that was established to compensate victims of road traffic accidents caused by uninsured and unidentified vehicles. The vehicle data on the NFD will be combined with the same information for private motor vehicles and used by An Garda Síochána to identify vehicles which are being driven illegally without insurance. formation on fleet and motor trader vehicles was set out in the recently enacted Road Traffic and Roads Act (2023). “We are pleased that the vast majority of the fleet and motor trader vehicles have been added to the National Fleet Database,” said David Fitzgerald, CEO of the MIBI. “This is a positive development and we would like to thank all the fleet owners/ managers, motor traders, insurers and insurance brokers who supported this activity. “It is though disappointing that there are still a significant number of fleet owners and managers or motor traders who have not fulfilled their legal obligations and added their vehicle details. However being a data led system it will be very difficult for these vehicles to avoid detection. These vehicles may now be flagged by An Garda Síochána for uninsured driving. Of-

Getting through the cold snaps Three weeks into the new year and we have already experienced our first real cold snap of 2024. Rest assured it won't be the last one either. At this time of year, we should be looking at how best to weatherproof our homes and look at how we can best conserve heat and energy. There are a number of really simple but highly effective measures homeowners can undertake to weatherproof their homes. For example, it’s worth the effort to repair dripping taps as even a trickle of water can freeze and block your pipes or worse lead to significant water damage. Now is the time to locate and seal leaks as cold air can leak into your home through small cracks and gaps in windows and doorways. Much of the heat loss from a house is through the windows, particu-

larly if they are single-glazed. Making your home as airtight as possible will help your home retain more warm air resulting in less energy use for heating, ultimately saving money and making your home warmer. Other very simple, yet effective measures are to close doors between heated and unheated rooms to keep the heat in, unused chimneys can be blocked with a chimney balloon to prevent draughts while closing curtains will help keep the heat in the evenings. Regarding home heating, advice from Sustainable Energy Authority Ireland (SEAI) is to set the heating to come on for one hour in the morning and to kick

back in 30 minutes before you are due home in the evening and to switch off 30 minutes before going to bed. Where possible, consumers are advised to lower the thermostat to 20C, which is an ideal temperature for the living areas in a home. Lowering your thermostat by as little as 1 degree could knock as much as 10 percentoff your heating bill. The SEAI also advises against overheating unused rooms and using the radiator valve to turn the temperature down or off in rooms that are not in use. If you are leaving the house unoccupied for an extended period, then set the timer and thermostat to allow for a low level of heating each day to help reduce the risk of frost damage and burst pipes. According to the SEAI, most of the energy used by a dishwasher and washing machine is used to heat the water. Run them on a lower temperature setting

and save on your energy costs. Keep your fridge’s temperature at between 2–3°C for the best performance. The freezer should be set to -15°C. These are simple but effective methods to help reduce our energy usage and keep our homes warm during the winter months.

WHAT'S

THE BUZZ? What does the ‘Top 10 TV Shows’ of 2023 tell us about RTÉ? It was probably no surprise to see that The Late Late Toy Show was once again the mostwatched television program in Ireland in 2023, with 1,575,800 people tuned in to RTE for Patrick Kielty's inaugural Toy Show.

Boy Swallows Universe:

An entertaining Ozzy drama Set against the backdrop of 1980s Brisbane, Boy Swallows Universe is a captivating coming-of-age story that combines elements of crime, adventure, and family drama. The series follows the journey of Eli Bell, a young boy navigating the harsh realities of life while grappling with the complexities of his family's involvement in criminal activities. Eli's world is a whirlwind of excitement and danger, as he mixes with a cast of colourful characters, including his charismatic, but troubled, father, his loving mother, a mysterious criminal mastermind,

and a group of eccentric schoolmates. As Eli grows older, he must learn to navigate the fine line between right and wrong. The performances are all excellent, with Travis Fimmel giving a powerful portrayal of Eli's father, while Sophie Wilde brings a sense of vulnerability and resilience to her role as Eli's mother. Boy Swallows Universe is a thought-provoking and emotionally resonant series that explores the themes of family, morality, and the search for identity. It is a story that will stay with you long after the credits roll. You can steam on Netflix now.

It marks a slight increase on the previous year's audience (Ryan Turbidy’s last Toy Show) of 1,532,000. Which begs the question, does it really matter who the presenter is when it appears that it the shows brand which is brings in the viewing numbers? The nine other highest performing shows bar one, were all sporting events, highlighting the commercial value of sport to the national broadcaster. Ireland’s run in the Rugby World Cup took 2nd, 3rd and 4th place with the matches against New Zeland (1.3M), South Africa(1.25M) and Scotland(1.2M) ranking highest

respectively. The All-Ireland showdown between Kerry and Dublin was this 6th most watch show in 2023 with 977K people tuning in. The only other non-sports event to make it to the top 10 was Patrick Kielty, with his very first instalment of the show came in at 9th place with a viewership of 833K. Following the controversy around his predecessors exit the show the critics were watching on closely to see how he would fair.

Podcast Find: The Boy in the Woods

If you like true crime then the BBC podcast "The Boy in the Woods" is well worth checking out. The podcast uncovers a heart-breaking tale of Injustice while exploring the circumstances around the tragic murder of six-year-old Rikki Neave in 1994. Rikki was found dead in woods

near his home in Peterborough, England, and his naked body was positioned in a distinctive star shape. The podcast, hosted by journalist Winifred Robinson, examines the case and the flawed investigation that led to Rikki's mother, Ruth Neave, being imprisoned for his murder. Robinson meticulously pieces together the events leading up to Rikki's death, drawing on interviews with police officers, forensic experts, and members of the community who knew Rikki. As the podcast unfolds, it becomes clear that there were serious flaws in the investigation. Crucial evidence was ignored, and key witnesses were not properly interviewed. As a result, Rikki's killer was never brought to justice, and Ruth Neave spent seven years in prison for a crime she did not commit. You can catch the podcast on Spotify.

All-Ireland rematch as Dubs host Kerry

| By Adam Moynihan

Ladies travel to the capital for National League opener | Men’s team in McGrath Cup action against Cork tonight The Kerry ladies will get the defence of their National Football League Division 1 title off the ground in Dublin on Saturday when the All-Ireland champions welcome them to Parnell Park. The match will begin at 5.15pm with live coverage on TG4. The early indications are that neither side will be at full strength for this All-Ireland final rematch. With established stars still fine tuning their conditioning after taking a well-deserved break during the off-season, several new players are expected to take to the field in the hopes of impressing their respective management teams. Kerry managers Declan Quill and Dar-

ragh Long will be eager to inject new life into a team that has lost the last two All-Ireland finals. There is clearly no need for widespread changes but one or two newcomers could make all the difference come the end of the season. The league is unlikely to be a big priority for Dublin. They finished third last year before going on to win Leinster and the All-Ireland and you can be sure that they’d be happy to repeat that same pattern again this time around if possible. Kerry were victorious against the Dubs last spring and also in the All-Ireland group stage, so their recent track record against the game’s top dogs is decent.

One interesting departure from last year’s league format is that two of the eight Division 1 teams will be facing relegation this year, up from one in 2023.

MCGRATH CUP FINAL

The Kerry men’s team are also facing their first significant test of 2024 this weekend, albeit in a pre-season competition. Jack O’Connor’s side make the relatively short journey to Cork on Saturday to take on The Rebels in the McGrath Cup final. Throw-in at Páirc Uí Rinn is at 2pm. The match will be streamed live on the TG4 YouTube channel. Like their female counterparts, the men

are still without some first team regulars with the Clifford brothers, Diarmuid O’Connor and Tadhg Morley not yet ready for action. The luckless Mike Breen will also miss the Cork game; he has picked up an ankle injury. A win would be nice, especially considering what Cork did to Kerry in last year’s McGrath Cup, but getting minutes into the legs and testing some newcomers and fringe players will be the priority for O’Connor and his selectors as they prepare for their National League Round 1 game against Derry, which takes place in Tralee on Saturday week.

What would you do t Former Kerry footballer Eamonn Fitzgerald on the importance of defibrillators and medical training for those in the sporting community Last week I highlighted the new beginnings for sports aficionados. Let’s call them New Year Resolutions. 2024 will be the year when the team will win that cup that eluded their best efforts in 2023. Kerry will roar back to regain the Sam Maguire from the Dubs and the Kerry ladies will make up for the loss in their All-Ireland final, also to the demonic Dubs. Clarkie and James Fleming will manage St Paul’s to win league titles and the Killarney RFC women’s team will build on a very successful past season. Man United will take the necessary corrective action to try and reel in Liverpool and return to its former glory. Ireland will start all over again in a bid to win the Six Nations, preparing for the faraway World Cup. And so

many athletes will achieve PBs; some will win Olympic medals.

LIFE OR DEATH

Hope springs eternal and rightly so but this week let’s start on a sombre note - a matter of life or death. Yes, it’s that stark. With the new season underway for so many players it is timely to note that even people who profess no interest in sport will have heard of Christian Eriksen in June 2021 when the 30-year-old soccer star faced imminent death when he collapsed from cardiac arrest. Tom Lockyer, a 29-year-old Luton Town player, also recently experienced a sudden cardiac arrest during a Premier League game against Bournemouth. They were the fortunate ones.

Dillon Quirke, that wonderful young Tipperary hurler with strong Killarney connections, wasn’t that fortunate and died far too young. Those are some high-profile cases that readers may know about. Unfortunately, on some occasions, the game one loves may be the scene for the last moments of life. Death can strike in a matter of moments, but a player's life can be snatched from the jaws of death by the timely interception of someone who has the basic training in CPR and in operating an AED (defibrillator), if and where they are available. In last week’s Killarney Advertiser, Chris Davies did a very thorough and enlightening interview with Billy O’Sullivan, who is the chairman of Killarney Heartbeat. I think of the great work that Siobhán Linehan (Linehan’s Bar) has done promoting the provision of AEDs in Killarney and the unbelievable work of the Killarney Order of Malta. John O’Mahony highlighted the issue in Killarney Today some years ago, RIP: Dillon Quirke of Tipperary who sadly passed away after collapsing on the field while playing for his club, Kilruane MacDonaghs, in 2022. advancing the need for AEDS. So, let's build on that great work as 2024 kicks off. Much has been done, but it must continue to grow. This isn't confined to sport, but since this column is focused on sport and all those involved in sport in whatever capacity, we cite the above examples. Usually, we hear that such a person suffered a heart attack. Others say it was cardiac arrest. They are not exactly the same. In essence, heart attack and cardiac arrest are both serious heart conditions, but they differ. A heart attack is when blood flow to the heart is blocked, usually by a clot or plaque in the coronary artery. A cardiac arrest is when the heart stops beating, usually because of an electrical problem in the heart rhythm.

DEREK O’CONNOR

Last September, Derek O'Connor suffered a life-threatening heart attack seconds after scoring a goal. The Clondalkin man was playing for Croí Ró Naofa's Clondalkin against St Joseph's CBS in a Dublin GAA championship game in Fairview Park, a venue well known to me as a wonderful pitch where we used to train in the 1970s. The 33-year-old had just scored an unlikely goal for him, but the jubilation was short-lived. He collapsed after suffering a sudden and life-threatening cardiac arrest. In Derek’s own words: "I've been told conditions were grand. A nice sunny day. Unfortunately, I don't remember any of it still to this day. I had just scored a nice goal which is rare for me. A couple of seconds later I was doubled up on the ground." Luckily Paul Moore a trained fireman, was on the opposite side and noticed the incident. He immediately took action. started doing chest compressions straight away. As a matter of great urgency, Moore sent the players to find a defibrillator in Fairview. They ran frantically through shops and pharmacies in the search and one of them ripped one off a wall in Tesco. He handed it over halfway as he said, “I’m knackered”. A teammate raced with it to Paul who administered the necessary treatment and picked up that welcome shock, keeping Derek alive until the ambulance arrived in jig time. Derek was rushed to the Mater hospital where it was revealed his heart had stopped three times during the terrifying ordeal. He remained in intensive care for five days and had a stent inserted to pre-

vent the same problem from reoccurring. He made a full recovery. “I was on the sideline for the rest of the year but I’m planning on starting again at the start of this season (March 2024)” said Derek. The irony of the club’s name does not escape us. Translated from the Gaeilge it means ‘The too saintly [club]’. Such life-threatening situations will happen again, and they won’t be confined just to sporting occasions. Following the completion of a research programme and consideration of best practice international guidelines, the GAA, through its Medical, Scientific & Welfare Committee, made several recommendations. Lessons were learned and the Dublin GAA board has followed up to deal with such a heart scare. They advise that players over the age of 14 should undergo cardiac screening on one occasion and to this process should be repeated before the age of 25. I wonder how many players and clubs have done this; very few I expect, even those with a history of heart trouble in their ancestors. Genetics is a very significant factor and should sound early alarm bells that will most likely save a life. God forbid if such an emergency should occur not just on sports grounds but in the shops, pubs or on the street. What would you do to help save a life? What could you do? Would you know where the nearest

defibrillator is located if such an emergency were to occur? Start in the middle of town on Main Street. That beautiful former public telephone box is now redundant since personal mobile phones effectively replaced them, but they are put to good use. That one houses a defibrillator. Thankfully, many more of them are hanging on walls and are very prominently placed by local sports clubs on their grounds. What action are local sports bodies and clubs taking? It is never too soon to begin such corrective action.

KERRY VERSUS CORK

It’s still only January and there’s a Munster final. It’s only the McGrath Cup but some Kerry GAA fans will be attracted to Páirc Uí Rinn this Friday evening. A Kerry-Cork game in any sport produces that age-old rivalry of the Blood & Bandages versus Green & Gold. John Cleary will be very keen to lift silverware; Cork have had some very empty years. Jack O’Connor will also want to win and if Kerry win he will be dampening down the spirits of a revival after last year’s disappointment in July. He knows more than anyone that all 3,414 feet of Carrauntoohill have to be scaled each year by the demanding, greedy, animalistic Kerry supporters who expect to win the All-Ireland every year. The prize at the summit is the Cannister, the only silverware that really matters to

Kerry players and supporters all over the world. Last year the team got to within inches of the top of the Devil’s Ladder, but fate intervened. Satan himself pushed us all down, down and even the great Footballer of the Year for the second year in a row couldn’t work another miracle as Dublin snatched victory. Lazarus can't be performing miracles every day, and he shouldn’t be asked to do so in every match. Ceisteanna go leor tonight in Cork. Who is going to partner Diarmuid O’Connor at midfield for 2024? How will Kerry show up without both Clifford brothers, if they are still being held in reserve? Apart from the Fossa brothers and Seán O’Shea, are there other forwards who will score? There are quite a few forwards who showed up well in the two McGrath Cup group games. They can score, but will they be allowed to score instead of that monotonous, sterile, pass-the-parcel game across the field? Possession at all costs is the preferred strategy. The goalposts are in the other direction and putting the ball between those posts is what matters in the long run. This lateral, and often backwards, passing has left so many supporters frustrated. Many are not even going to the games. Last year the articles on the musings of ‘Yer Man’ on the terrace featured in these pages and they drew by far the most in-

terest and reactions. To be more politically correct for this season we look forward to hearing from ‘Mo Dhuine’, because some of the finest judges of players and games are women. That’s the beauty of the Irish language, embracing all genders. What happens on some public occasion when the leader of the club/county/organisation is a lady? Manufactured sidesteps make-up. So, Yer Man becomes Mo Dhuine and Chairman becomes Cathaoirleach. Just as simple as that, and no embarrassment. It may be a bit too early in the year for Mo Dhuine to be in Paírc Uí Rinn tonight and even the mighty Christmas present of an expensive fleece will not keep out the expected cold on this frosty night, as forecasted by the weather gurus. January Blues? Shudder at the thought of losing to Cork tonight; worse still in the real Munster final and worst of all bending the knee once more to the Dubs in July. A few new players will be up for assessment and a good display should earn them their first start in the green and gold in a real match. Yes, it will be back to Tralee tomorrow week for that eagerly awaited league opener. It will be just a league game, but the league is so competitive nowadays that every game is contested with championship fervour. Kerry will be hoping to win their four home games in the league and maybe pick up a point or two in the away games.

Adam Moynihan reflects on Paudie Clifford’s remarkable career to date, from being overlooked by the juniors to winning an All-Ireland with the seniors – and now taking over as Kerry captain - in just a few short years

JUNIOR: Clifford in action for the Kerry juniors against Kildare in the 2018 All-Ireland semi-final in Navan. Photo: Piaras Ó Mídheach/Sportsfile.

At 24 years of age, when his younger brother had already brought home two All-Star awards, Paudie Clifford was still waiting to make his debut for Kerry. Now, at 27, he’s the team’s captain. Okay, Kerry’s archaic captaincy rule meant that the pool of candidates was small. Only four players who featured for champions East Kerry in last year’s county final have made Jack O’Connor’s panel for 2024 and only two – David and Paudie Clifford – are guaranteed starters. But the elder Clifford’s standing within the squad and his importance to the side’s fortunes would make him a viable option regardless. He’s a three-time AllStar, one of Kerry’s star players, and one of the top footballers in the country. Much has been made of his unorthodox journey so far but it’s worth underlining just how meteoric his rise to the top has been. This is a guy who never played minor or U21 for Kerry. He was always a stylish footballer but when he started playing senior for Fossa, he was never on the radar of then Kerry manager Eamonn Fitzmaurice. In fact, in 2017 he tried and failed to make the Kerry junior squad.

Paudie took the long road and now he’s Kerry’s captain CHANGE

Things began to change for Paudie in 2018, when he was 21 going on 22. He earned a spot on the Kerry junior team and played a prominent role on their All-Ireland run, scoring a goal in both the semi-final and final. His performances in green and gold, and also for an emerging East Kerry team later that year, made some Kerry supporters sit up and take notice. Many still doubted his on-pitch discipline, though. He had a notoriously fiery temper and the fact that he was sent off for his role in a melee during the county semi-final against Dingle did little to assuage those doubts. No matter how good a player is they’re no good to a Kerry manager - or any manager - if they don’t stay on the field. After spending four years in CIT, he moved to UCC to pursue a masters and he was a key figure when the Cork university won the 2019 Sigerson Cup, playing alongside Kerry’s Seán O’Shea, Graham O’Sullivan, Brian Ó Beaglaoich and Killian Spillane. He even scored a header in the early rounds. (He was grateful that manager Billy Morgan didn’t chastise him for what some might consider an act of showboating.) Paudie later revealed that playing alongside intercounty talent for UCC gave him confidence that he could make it at the highest level. Later that year the Fossa man was sensational for East Kerry as they finally made their breakthrough in the County Championship after a 20-year famine. He was the Man of the Match in the final against Dr Crokes and his performances throughout the competition won over any remaining naysayers. By this stage the player himself felt he was ready. By his own admission he felt he probably wasn’t up to playing senior intercounty in the years prior, but now he was raring to go. Public perception had changed too. His immaculate ball skills, dogged determination and recently improved physical attributes could not be ignored. He simply had to be called into the Kerry senior panel that winter. There was no longer any doubt about it.

CALL-UP

Kerry manager Peter Keane, who had led the county to the All-Ireland final in his first season that September, brought Paudie on board for 2020. He didn't feature for the team before Covid hit and the season was suspended, so he had to wait until October to make his first appearance for the seniors. The

24-year-old was a very late substitute in the league victory away to Monaghan. His first championship appearance came soon after, albeit in unfortunate circumstances. Paudie was an 89th-minute substitute (i.e. the very last minute of play) in the shocking extra-time defeat to Cork in a rain-soaked Páirc Uí Chaoimh in November. Keane opted to start the game with two unconventional half forwards – Ronan Buckley (a midfielder) and Ó Beaglaoich (a back) – with players like Paudie and Stephen O’Brien held in reserve. In the post-mortem, Kerry were heavily criticised for their defensive approach in a game they were expected to win comfortably. The Kingdom started with six out-andout forwards in Round 1 of the 2021 National League, a 22-point hammering of Galway in Tralee. Paudie Clifford was one of them. The game is perhaps best remembered for David Clifford’s hattrick and his Cruyff-inspired third goal, but the older brother was excellent too, notching 1-2 from play. Since that day, there has been no looking back. He rapidly established himself as an irreplaceable cog in the Kerry machine and his consistently brilliant

displays have won him three consecutive All-Star awards in his first three seasons as a starter (a feat not even David could manage). His passing is perhaps his strongest attribute – he strokes the ball around the pitch like a prime Ciarán McDonald – but his ability to bring the fight to the opposition when the heat is on is what has really endeared him to the Kerry faithful. He was pivotal to Kerry’s All-Ireland triumph in 2022 and now, after captaining Fossa to the Junior All-Ireland and East Kerry to another county title in 2023, he has earned the right to captain his county in 2024.

FIRE

One of the more impressive aspects of Paudie’s ascension to elite level football is the way he has managed that fiery temper that caused him problems in the past. Critics said he didn’t have the head for it, that he was a red card waiting to happen, but he has played 37 times for Kerry and has been sent off just once: an inconsequential second yellow against Tyrone in 2023, late on when the game was already won. The only other time I can recall any indiscipline that hurt the team in any way was on his full debut against Galway. If

my memory serves me correctly, he got involved with Damien Comer after Comer won a free, and the referee brought the ball in 13 metres, inside the 45-metre line. This made the free kickable and Galway scored. But Kerry won by 22 points, and that was the end of it. The fire is still there, of course. He is a fierce competitor and he is fiercely loyal to his team, whether that’s his club, his district or his county. He still bristles easily and he rarely holds his tongue. (His infamous speech after Fossa won the All-Ireland is evidence of that.) But during his Kerry career so far he has shown admirable restraint, even in the face of severe provocation, perhaps inspired by his late mother Ellen whose pre-match advice was simple: “no fighting and stay on the field”. Kerry will certainly need both of Ellen’s boys on the field if they are to avenge last year’s heartbreaking All-Ireland final defeat to Dublin. Who knows, with a bit of luck we might get another Paudie Clifford speech from the Hogan podium at the end of July. For a couple of reasons, not least the unique journey that has brought him this far, wouldn’t that be a sight and a sound to behold?

SPORT NOTES

Killarney Athletic U17 PREMIER LEAGUE: Killarney Athletic 2-1 Tralee Dynamos. A great win today for our lads in what was a marvellous game of football between 2 really talented teams. We started really well and dominated the opening stages but came up against a goalie in great form who made 3 top drawer saves in the first half alone. We did finally manage to get one past him when a great reverse pass by Brian O’Shea set Jake Nash through to finish to the net. This woke Dynamos up and they began to get more of a foothold in the game and scored just before half time when a cross ended up going in off the back post. 1-1 at halftime was probably a bit flattering to Dynamos. The second half started with dynamos shading it and looking more likely to get a goal. Our guys upped it again and things were even enough and looking like whoever got the next goal would win it. With about 15 minutes to go Luke Doolan hit a cracking shot from 35 yards out which was worthy of winning any game. Both teams had chances for the remainder of the game, us mainly on the counterattack as Dynamos pressed for an equaliser, but both defences held out til the final whistle. This was a superb team performance with a great work ethic and attitude. This performance has been threatening all season and we need to try and maintain these levels going forward. All players and subs used gave everything for the win which is all you can ask. I’d like to give a special mention to Charlie O’Doherty who got his first start in goal today and was brilliant. This was thoroughly deserved as he has never missed a game, never complained when not starting and always shown up with a great attitude. Thanks to Dynamos for a great sporting game, they play the right way and never much between the 2 teams. U13 PREMIER: Killarney Athletic 4-1 Listowel Celtic. A very clinical showing in front of goal, saw us race into a 4-0 lead in the first half. In the second half, Listowel came out and caused us problems and got one back, but a very solid defensive display, saw us see out the game and take the 3 points. A fantastic squad performance today by all of young Blues. Well done boys. Thanks to Listowel for a good, sporting game. U15 DIV 2: Killarney athletic 4-0 Kenmare. Our blues were back in action today after the Christmas break. The boys showed no sign of rust as they started brightly and played some fantastic football. The boys struggled to find the back of the net due to some fine saves from the Kenmare keeper. With 2 minutes before the half time whistle, Lucas opened the scoring after a fine delivery from jack which was flicked on by Twomey for Lucas to finish. The blues didn’t let up in the second half as Diarmuid made the difference from

the bench getting his first assist with a wonderful ball for Ewan to finish which he more than deserves for his performance in midfield today. The nerves had eased as Diarmuid picked out another great ball to find captain fantastic Twomey to make it 3. Diarmuid finished off his fine performance with a goal of his own to see out a 4-0 win. Credit to Kenmare as they never gave up, but our defence held strong with both keepers Sam and Jamie playing today to get our first clean sheet of the season. Thanks to Kenmare for a sporting game. U12 GIRLS PREMIER: Iveragh 2-2 Athletic. Our U12 girls made the long trip to Iveragh Saturday evening for a late kick off and shared the spoils with the hosts. With a few players missing 12 girls made the trip and started the brighter of the two sides, with our pressure paying off when Roisin slotted home. 1-0 Athletic. Iveragh to their credit started to dominate the game for the next 10 mins and drew level with a great strike. 1-1. With the half nearing an end, Athletic were awarded a penalty which Roisin cooly slotted home. HT 2-1 Athletic. The second half was an even affair with Athletic hitting the post twice through Lucy and Roisin and the home side missing a penalty. However, with 2 minutes remaining Iveragh drew level again with a great strike. FT2-2. Honours even in the end and probably a fair reflection of the game. Thanks to Iveragh for a very sporting game and the ref on the day for letting the game flow. Our girls are still unbeaten this season and we look forward to the next game.

Killarney Celtic RESULTS: U15 Premier - Killarney Celtic 6-2 Ballyhar Dynamos. Samuel Scroope 3, Dara Horan, Mark Looney, Ignacy Truchan. U15 Division 2 - Killarney Celtic B 1-0 Mastergeeha B. MUNSTER SENIOR HURLING LEAGUE: Kerry’s campaign ended with a 14-point loss to Tipperary in the Munster Senior League today. One of Kerry’s best performers was Luke Crowley. The Glenflesk man, who plays his Hurling for Rathmore, was sharp from the off, winning an opening free that Shane Conway converted. He then fired a point over of his own, splitting the posts from near the sideline with little room to work. He added another after linking with Conway, with his blast of a shot just going over the bar. His third point was the best, turning his marker inside out, before finding the target, with a quick Flick of the wrists. An outstanding first start for Kerry. Well done to Luke. After a fiveweek break, Killarney u18.5 girls faced Carrick on Suir in the Munster League Quarter Final. Played in glorious Aghadoe sunshine, it was perfect weather for a running rugby and the girls from Killarney played some incredible high-quality rugby and ran out comfortable winners against a very spirted Tipperary

side. Right from the kick off Killarney showed they meant business, flyhalf Fia Whelan landed a perfect kick off to the on rushing Ava O’Malley, who gathered and Carrick conceded an early penalty, a quick tap had Carrick on the back foot, after some good interplay, Whelan made an excellent break and was tackled just before the line but managed to give a lovely off load to the supporting player Lily Morris who was on hand to get the first score of the day, which Whelan converted to put the girls from the Kingdom leading 7-0. Shortly after, Niamh Dorian made an excellent break which created an overlap out wide and passed to birthday girl Holly O’Sullivan who scored a fine try. Then it was the turn of Carrick to score next which wasn’t converted leaving the score line of 12-05 to Killarney. Next up to score was one of three girls celebrating their birthday Ali O’Donoghue to get the best try of the day after a super finish by the Killarney centre O’Donoghue, which again was converted by Whelan. To round off the first half Killarney scored two further tries the first from Niamh Dorian and her second of the day and then by player of the match the Gneeveguilla forward Ella Guerin Crowley who showed incredible strength and determination to get over to leave the score at half time 35-5. In the second half both teams got all their reserves on and played a very competitive game, special shout out to the third Killarney birthday girl who had a super game, Molly Gabbett. Killarney had two girls from Listowel making their debut namely Cara Reilly and Niamh Enright. Next up for the Killarney girls is an away semi-final in Clonakilty on Saturday the 20th of January.
