Isha and Jocelyn leave thousands without power Emergency serives, Kerry County Council and EBS were left picking up the pieces as Storm Isha and Jocely battered Killarney causing widespread disruption and power outages. The back-to-back storms caused widespread damage and disruption across the county, including power outages, road closures, and disruptions to public transport. Storm Isha first made landfall in Ireland on Sunday, bringing strong winds, heavy rain, and coastal flooding. The storm caused significant damage to power lines and infrastructure in Killarney, particularly around Glenflesk and Baraduff where it left many local homes and businesses without power. Trees were reported down near Glenflesk Village, Ballydowney, Kilcummin Road, Fossa and Loreto Road while many of the roads that run along the National Park were covered in debris and fallen trees. In a statement to the Killarney Advertiser the Kerry County Council said that "On Sunday, Council crews responded to incidents primarily in Tralee and Killarney and there were 150 calls to our emer-

gency line. 80% of incidents were fallen trees and branches and the remainder were fallen lines and poles (referred to the ESB) and signs and hoarding blowing onto roads". A statement from ESB said that "At the peak of Storm Isha (late Sunday night) there were approx. 14,500 customers without power in the wider Killarney area and surrounding parts. On Monday morning, this number was down to 8,500 customers as crews worked to safely restore power". Storm Jocelyn followed closely behind, hitting Ireland on Tuesday with more strong winds causing further damage and disruption to some localised areas. An ESB spokeperson said that "High winds associated with Storm Jocelyn hampered some repair work. Following Storm Jocelyn on Wednesday approximately 400 customers remained without power in

Killarney and surrounding parts. Some of the areas where customers remained without power included Milltown, Kenmare, Coolcorcoran and Rathmore." In a further statement to the Killarney Advertiser they said "All available networks resources are deployed across Kerry. We apologise for the disruption to family and commercial life this causes, and thank customers, especially those who were

without power again overnight, for their patience as our crews work to safely restore power." If you are hoping to get out and walk the dog over the weekend you will be glad to know that Met Éireann are forecasting that the worst of the weather is behind us and locals can expect some dry weather, albeit some with scattered outbreaks of rain Saturday and Sunday.

Chamber: Reducing VAT rate again would be a good start Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce has pledged its full backing to a campaign to immediately reduce the VAT rate on hospitality to nine per cent – or less – as part of a suite of measures to support businesses struggling to survive in the current economic climate. The town’s business representative organisation said it is no coincidence that many operators started feeling the squeeze when the rate was increased to 13.5 per cent in September and that, in addition to the huge increases in the other costs involved in running a business, was leading to a sudden spate of closures. “The VAT rise, combined with rising energy costs, food inflation, major staffing issues, wage increases and fewer people on the streets has, in many respects, created the perfect storm to force a business to close,” chamber said. “Some traders have raised the white flag and acknowledged that they can

simply no longer absorb the costs and remain any way competitive,” a statement issued by joint chamber presidents Pádraig Treacy and Johnny McGuire said. The chamber has acknowledged that issues such as leases expiring, business premises being sold, difficulties in securing qualified staff and the dark cloud of warehoused debt having to be paid back in a matter of weeks have all contributed to a number of businesses pulling down the shutters. But the business organisation stressed

that there can be no argument that Killarney is also really feeling the impact of the very significant influx of asylum seekers and refugees which has resulted in considerable challenges for those involved in retail in the town. Chamber said less people spending obviously means businesses, who operate on tight margins, are going to suffer and many involved in retail in Killarney have reported a dramatic reduction in footfall since so much of the town’s available accommodation was snapped up by the International Protection Accommoda-

tion Service. “That factor alone is impacting on business, it is impacting on services such as access to GPs and schools and it is putting traders on the streets under real pressure,” Mr Treacy and Mr McGuire said. The joint presidents said when Finance Minister, Michael McGrath, addressed the chamber president’s lunch this time last year, he gave an undertaking that he would do everything in his power to extend the period of time for the lower VAT rate and he kept his word. “Chamber led the way on that occasion and we would now appeal to the minister, once again, to consider reintroducing the nine per cent rate – or even lower – to give many businesses a fighting chance of survival. It would, at least, be a decent start. “It’s a big ask but it’s a big problem and this is the only solution,” Mr Treacy and Mr McGuire said, adding that it was imperative that jobs in retail, hospitality and other services are protected. “Very few can be critical of the minimum wage increase as staff must be looked after but having to also cope with a VAT hike and a drop-off in footfall as a result of lost accommodation will be the final straw for too many,” the chamber warned. The business organisation said in addition to reinstating the nine per cent rate, consideration should be given to a bespoke package of supports for businesses, additional breaks in terms of commercial rates, greater training opportunities for staff and agreeing to a phased repayment of warehoused debt.

Kilkenny Design announce integration with Christy's When the rumour mill started spinning this week that Killarney was to lose another retail store the Killarney Advertiser made contact with Kilkenny Design to seek clarity. The long-time Killarney retailer is in fact maintaining its presence in Killarney, albeit in a shared space with its sister business Christy's on Main St. Speaking to the Killarney Advertiser this week a spokesperson for the stores said "Kilkenny Design is pleased to announce an exciting development with the integration of both Kilkenny Design Stores in Killarney. The Kilkenny Design store located at 3 New Street will soon be integrated with its sister store - Christy's - at 10/11 Main Street Killarney in the coming months.

"This strategic move is aimed at enhancing the overall experience for both domestic and international customers by consolidating the strengths and offerings of both brands under one roof. Our valued colleagues from the New Street location have been briefed and we are committed to ensure a smooth transition. "The integration will bring together unique product offerings, providing a more extensive and diverse selection for our customers. As part of this move, we will invest in the revamp of the Christy's Killarney store to create an even more vibrant and inviting space for shoppers. The retail space at 3 New Street will be available soon for lease, offering a unique opportunity for a new venture in the heart of Killarney."

TOWN TALK Dead horse leaves residents desperate

“I am writing this email to you and concealing who I am for my safety and the safety of the concerned residents of Pinewood Estate, so please don’t disclose or reach out to find out who I am but just know that what I am about to share is 100% true and an ongoing issue within the estate.” These were the opening lines of a distressing anonymous email received by the Killarney Advertiser late on Tuesday evening. It followed an incident on Monday where a horse was left to die on the front green of the Killarney Housing Estate. What followed was a detailed account of a series of allegations of animal neglect by one person. To substantiate the claims, the Killarney Advertiser met with the sender of that email, along with another resident who provided us with details of the incident including photos. Due to the distressing nature of the photos we have decided not to publish them. “The guards were called on Monday after one of this man’s horses was seen lying on the green in the middle of the estate, unable to get up. The guards were called

to the scene, but they left again for a time. They waited for two hours for someone to come pick up the horse, but unfortunately, the horse took its last breath. Children had to see of all this happening as it is in the public area of the estate,” said the upset resident. One of the residents explained this was not the first incident and that residents have been reporting animal welfare issues to both animal welfare groups and the Gardai. “All of these issues relate to the same man. I rescued a dog on Friday the 15th of September 2023. The days leading up to the rescue, the same man that owned the horse was keeping two dogs in a horse

box in terrible conditions. I was walking home one day when I came across a very sick puppy coming out of the horse box which was open. It followed me and went into my neighbour’s house. I got a number for an animal rescue online and they told me to bring the dog to the local veterinary clinic which I did with the help of another resident. I then rang the guards to make a complaint, explaining that I had rescued one puppy, but I was afraid there could be more dogs in the horse box still or around the area. They went out to investigate, but I am not sure what they found.” The Advertiser contacted the Killarney Garda station this week. We spoke with

Garda Ken O’ Sullivan who said they responded to a call about the horse in Pinewood Estate. They are now liaising with Kerry County Council on the matter. The Advertiser asked the Garda Press office if they were aware of any other complaints regarding cruelty to animals on the estate. At time of publication, we were awaiting a reply. A spokesperson for Kerry County Council said, “Kerry County Council is in receipt of complaints and is liaising with the relevant authorities”. The residents said that they have also reached out to Cllr. Martin Grady who has been working in the background to deal with some of the issues raised and speaking to the Killarney Advertiser this week he commented: “I have been made aware of a number of incidents in the Pinewood estate relating to anti-social behaviour and animal cruelty. It is very sad to see these proud Pinewood residents suffering because of the trouble caused by one or two. Shame on anyone who treats humans or helpless animals this way. It was heart-breaking to see a malnourished horse not able to stand up without being assisted.” The two concerned residents we spoke with this week said that they are at their wits end with the 'carry-on'. They hope that highlighting the issues with the authorities and this publication that action will be taken. “We take great pride in where we live and it’s just upsetting to see one individual doing this, we hope that by highlighting the issue the relevant bodies can step in and support the community who are afraid to approach this man themselves”. If you suspect animal cruelty close to where you live please call KSPCA on 066 7128588 or the ISPCA national helpline on 0818 515 515

Fossa Climate Action Group is hosting first event The recently established Fossa Climate Action Group is hosting its inaugural public event this Sunday afternoon. This event will be held at 3pm in Fossa Community Hall, opposite Fossa Church. The Climate Action Group was established in October 2023 after concerned locals were inspired to action by a movie called 'The Letter'. 'The Letter - a message to our earth' is a movie for a global audience that follows frontline leaders, climate activists, and climate refugees from across the world that face the effects of climate change everyday. The story raises hope in a heart warming way by telling the story of these protagonists as they are invited to join Pope Fran-

cis in the Vatican to tell their story and find solutions. This hope became action right away in Fossa when Mary Fitzgerald and Paul O' Raw asked volunteers to join them in finding a way to take action locally amid the global climate and biodiversity crisis. Soon there were weekly meetings and the first event was planned. The Community Sustainability Fair will showcase the organisations that are making a difference across Kerry. Among the exhibitors telling their story on the day are Killarney National Park Education Centre, KWD Recycling, Transition Kerry, Tralee Bay Wetlands, Kerry County Council, Killarney Men's Shed, Milltown Health Food Shop, Beaufort Bee Club, Fossa Nation-

€12 pension increase eroded by higher prices Active Retirement Ireland, the country’s largest membership organisation for older people, has described as “meagre” the €12 per week increase to the state pension that came into effect on January 2.

Former All-Star fundraising for Cullina ASD classes

The charity is calling on the government to deliver a benchmarked state pension indexed to wage growth, which it says would allow older people to live with dignity and greater income security. Following the Budget 2024 announcement in October last year, members from Active Retirement Associations around Ireland — including in Kerry — in receipt of the state pension took part in a consultation carried out by Active Retirement Ireland. They found that just one in 10 of those surveyed (11%) felt the €12 per week increase would give them more freedom to enjoy a better quality of life. This week the Killarney Advertiser spoke with Killarney two local pensioners. Nancy Hegarty is the secretary of Active Retirement Killarney and she believes that the €12 increase is already eroded away due to the rise in the cost of living. "From speaking to our members €12 won't make any difference to them, we are already dealing with higher prices for groceries. The cost of heating our homes has also gone up which many of

our members acutely feel the impact of because unlike people who are out working for eight hours of the day, we are at home. During the Winter we need to leave our heating on for longer periods and rely on electric heaters and the sorts to keep us warm. I think an extra €30 or €40 would have made a difference". Brendan Lynch is a member of Active Retirement Fossa. Both Brendan and his wife are now retired and while they would have like to have seen more, they said that there were happy with some sort of an increase. “We will take what we can get, it is only a small increase and we would have liked if it was a little bit more but we also understand this is difficult time for lots of people at the moment”. Active Retirement Ireland CEO Maureen Kavanagh said this week that “the additional €12 that pensioners will have only started receiving in the past couple of weeks is not an increase, rather it is a brace to slow the ever-weakening buying power of the pension year-on-year. When you consider that this money will be instantly absorbed by higher costs of basic goods and services — and straight back into the strong economy older people are being locked out of — this meagre, so-called ‘increase’ is actually €0, if it is not in minus”.

Sarah Houlihan, an SNA in Cullina National school, has decided that there is no mountain too high to climb for the children under her care.

Sarah has decided to run a full marathon for the children in the ASD classes in her school. She will be taking on the challenge on Friday the 9th of February, leaving Cullina school at 9am. Last September, class teacher Lorraine Counihan, another classroom SNA Sarah Kelleher and Sarah were chatting after the children went home. They spoke about how the children in both the junior and senior classes deserved so many more opportunities outside of the school to promote their social and communication skills, as well as therapeutic activities. However, such trips and activities are expensive, and so the idea was floated to try and raise some much needed funds for the schools ASD classes by running a marathon. Sarah and her colleagues know that they work in a very privileged position and that they work in classrooms with fantastic children who have wonderful talents and amazing personalities. They

feel lucky to be part of their life for a few hours every day but want to give them more. With additional funds the school will be able to take the ASD classrooms on outings once or twice a month. The could be something as simple as a visit the library where they can experience standing in queues to exchange their books. Sarah and the other teacher also have plans for the children to experience therapeutic horse riding sessions and surf lessons. The more they can raise, the more opportunities they can offer the children. If you can, support Sarah Houlihan and the children of Cullina National school which will make a massive difference to their school life.

Memorial walk for Hugh Murhill

rescheduled for this Sunday One of Killarney’s most-popular rowers and jarveys will be remembered at a special walk organised by the Kerry branch of the Irish Kidney Association. The walk, which was supposed to go ahead last week but had to be cancelled due to the bad weather, will now go ahead this Sunday 28th January Hugh Murhill passed away in 2020. The Kerry branch of the Irish Kidney Association is organising the ‘Hugh Murhill

Street Art More of the same but with better community engagement! | By Chris Davies Has anyone else noticed the increase in large scale murals and wall art around Killarney? Vibrant splashes of colour are popping up on walls and buildings across town and are adding new life to otherwise dull spaces. While people’s opinions on street art differs, I think they are a great way to transform ordinary spaces and improve the overall aesthetic of our town. Edel Tobin, a Waterford woman, has her handprint on a number of Killarney’s Street Art project, the most recent being the Chapel Lane artwork completed in 2022 and commissioned by Kerry County Council and Creative Ireland. The project was presented by Edel’s new company Street Art Ink and the artists were Juliette Viode and Mad Jessie. Talking to the Killarney Advertiser this week Edel explained the concepts behind some of these projects. 1# “The brief for this piece was to transform the dark gloomy lane into something more vibrant and so use of bright colours was essential for this project. Creative Ireland wanted us to incorporate the heritage and history of the lan-

eways and to include the bio diversity of the flora and fauna of the Killarney National Park which I hope we captured well” 2# The Glebe Carpark Project was presented Edel’s previous company and curated by Edel herself. Again, commissioned by Kerry County Council and Creative Ireland, the brief was to lift this area of Killarney and draw on the rich heritage of the town. Artist - Adwart is responsible for the piece of art. 3# Back in 2021 artist Curtis Hylton assisted by Magda Karol, developed a vi-

brant mural along a section of the newly opened Flesk Cycleway in Killarney. The images depict some of the flora and fauna that surround the area. It is intended that the mural will add vibrancy and creativity to the cycleway and enhance the public's appreciation of the natural world that surrounds Killarney. Killarney boasts a rich cultural heritage and is surrounded by an abundance of natural beauty and it is great to see the town's urban aesthetic benefiting from a touch of artistic excellence. When people visit Killarney they spend much of their

day exploring lakes and mountains, and who could blame them? However, I think there is a real opportunity to increase the amount of time people spend exploring our town centre, something that would greatly benefit the small businesses in town. With a bit more joined up thinking and better community engagement Killarney could become a street art destination, rivalling other locations such as Derry, Cork, Waterford and Dublin who have a vibrant street art scene that brings in many visitors each year. Here are a few of my suggestions to improve upon the great work so far.

It is important that we stick with a theme of local cultural significance. Mural selection should align with Killarney's unique identity. Depictions of local folklore, historical landmarks, and renowned personalities can evoke a sense of pride and connection. Themes that celebrate Killarney's natural wonders, such as the majestic Lakes of Killarney, Ross Castle Muckross House and the Killarney National Park, can further enhance the town's reputation as a haven of natural beauty. We should also look to see if we can improve the strategic placement for maximum impact.

Take the Chapel Lane piece for example, I would walk that lane at least one per week (albeit in the opposite direction) and never saw the full extent of the artwork. The placement of murals should consider factors such as visibility and accessibility. Given that many visitors head out on tours by day it may also be a good idea to consider artificial lighting so that they are visible at night. It would also be great to engage local artists in the process. Open calls for mural proposals can attract talented artists. Could we engage with local schools and

youth groups for ideas? Finally it would be great to see some thought put in to the promotion of such murals. A robust marketing and engagement strategy, social media campaigns, guided tours, and community events can showcase the murals to a wider audience. In other countries Interactive elements, such as QR codes linked to local history or QR codes that unlock augmented reality experiences can enhance the visitor experience. Killarney has many great stories to tell, what better way to do it than through a medium like Street Art.

Creative Communities Grants Scheme open for applications Creative Ireland Kerry, through Kerry County Councils Arts Office are calling for applications to their Creative Communities Programme funding 2024. Applications should focus on Creative and Cultural Engagement projects with strong community participation around County Kerry. New, ambitious, and meaningful collaborations between creative practitioners, organisations or community groups are encouraged. The announcement was welcomed by Cllr. Jim Finucane, Cathaoirleach of Kerry county Council who said "Creative Ireland Kerry continues to support communities and creative professionals across Kerry, helping to grow involvement in creativity towards greater individual and societal well-being. This funding provides a great opportunity for anyone looking to get involved with culture to help make our communities, and our county a better place".

Applications must ensure a significant degree of community participation, impact, and engagement. The community must benefit from the project, which must be creative in nature. Once entries close, the top nominees are tallied and their expert judging panel adjudicates on the readers’ shortlist — choosing the final winners and runners-up from peoples favourites. This year’s judges included well-known names in the industry such as Kerry hoteliers Francis & John Brennan, travel Editor with the independent Pól Ó Conghaile, Author Roz Purcell and Niall Treacy of Fáilte Ireland. Kerry featured in a number of lists including first in the ‘Ireland’s top 10 holiday counties’ catagory. A number of Killarney Hotels were listed in the ‘Ireland’s Top 10 Hotels’ including The Europe, Dunloe Hotel & Gardens and the Killarney Park Hotel. ESPA at The Europe also came second in the ‘Ireland’s Top 10 Spas’ category. There was one other big local win and

that was to the Killarney Coffee Cup Project which won the ‘Green Light Judges’ Award. The accolade is given for “one business, destination or initiative for an outstanding contribution to sustainable tourism and hospitality.” Speaking to the Killarney Advertiser this week Ciara Treacy of the coffee cup project said " The Killarney Coffee Cup Project was delighted to be the recipient of the Irish Independent Travel Reader Awards by Pol O Conghaile. This award is a testament to the commitment of the participating businesses who have invested time and effort into making this project a success. Killarney remains the only town in the country that has made a significant impact in removing single use coffee cups and is leading the way for others to follow. It should be pointed out that this project is still continuing through an education programme with Killarney National and Secondary Schools. Huge credit must be given to the Killarney Credit Union who have supported and invested huge time in the project from the beginning."

WHAT'S

THE BUZZ?

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson reclaims branding rights Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson has officially acquired the legal rights to his iconic nickname, "The Rock." The deal, announced on January 23, 2024, also marks Johnson's entry into the board of directors of TKO Group, a sports and entertainment company that owns WWE and UFC. The "Rock" moniker, which Johnson adopted during his early days in the WWE, has become synonymous with his larger-than-life persona and global superstardom. The name has also been a significant asset to Johnson's successful transition into Hollywood, where he has starred in numerous blockbuster films. Under the terms of the agreement with WWE, Johnson will retain full ownership of the "The Rock" trademark, allowing him to use it for commercial purposes across all media platforms. He will also continue to use the name in his professional wrestling appearances, which are infrequent but still highly anticipated by fans. In addition to the legal rights to "The Rock," the agreement also includes Johnson's involvement in TKO Group's board of directors. This will give him a say in the company's strategic direction and allow him to contribute to its growth and success. The acquisition of "The Rock" trademark and Johnson's involvement in

TKO Group mark a new era in his career. As he continues to expand his horizons and pursue new endeavors, he can now do so with the full ownership of his iconic name and the backing of a powerful sports and entertainment company. Sticking with wrestling, WWE announced this week that it has signed a multi-year deal with Netflix that will see the company's flagship weekly wrestling program, Monday Night Raw, move to the streaming service beginning in January 2025. The deal is reportedly worth over $5 billion and will make Raw the exclusive home of the program in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Latin America. It is also expected to include WWE's other weekly shows, SmackDown and NXT, as well as the company's premium live events, such as WrestleMania, SummerSlam, and the Royal Rumble. The move to Netflix is a major shift for WWE, which has been airing Raw on traditional television networks for over three decades. The deal could help the company reach a younger audience and expand its global reach. It is also a sign of the growing importance of streaming services in the entertainment industry.

Audible Recommendation

West Cork

Ian Bailey, a British journalist who had been the prime suspect in the murder of Sophie Toscan du Plantier for 28 years, passed away in West Cork last week. If you watched the Netflix and Sky documentaries on the murder you may be also interested in listening to the Audible series - West Cork. The gripping and engrossing true-crime podcast dives into the unsolved murder of Sophie Toscan du Plantier, a French film producer who was found dead at her holiday home in West Cork, Ireland in 1996. The podcast, hosted by investigative journalist Sam Bungey and documentarian Jennifer Forde, takes listeners on a journey through the investigation, exploring the characters involved, the provocative prime suspect, and the community's enduring trauma. What makes West Cork so compelling

is its ability to balance the gruesome details of the crime with the human stories of those affected by it. Bungey and Forde have a knack for bringing the characters to life, weaving together the various threads of the investigation, evaluating the evidence, theories, and the contradictions. They also challenge the official police narrative, raising questions about the investigation's missteps and the possibility that the wrong person was arrested. The podcast deals with some graphic and disturbing material, including descriptions of the crime scene and the victim's injuries. However, if you're a fan of true crime podcasts and you're looking for something that will stay with you long after you've finished listening, then West Cork is definitely worth checking out.

Gladiators is back on BBC

The iconic '90s sports/ entertainment show Gladiators, has made a comeback to British screens, gracing the BBC with a brand new generation of superhuman gladiators and a fresh set of exhilarating challenges. The reboot, which premiered on January 13, 2024, has been met with praise from viewers, eager to relive the nostalgic thrill of the original series. The new series introduces a diverse and talented cast of gladiators, each representing a unique blend of strength, agility, and personality. The reboot retains the essence of the original Gladiators, incorporating iconic challenges like The Eliminator, Hang Tough, and Duel. However, these

classic events have been revitalized with a modern twist, incorporating new obstacles and modifications to keep the competition even more exciting. With Bradley (The Chase Presenter) and Barney Walsh taking the helm as hosts, the pair provide a lively and entertaining commentary.

Michael Healy Rae opposing electric dog collars ban Deputy Michael Healy Rae TD has been outspoken this week and is totally opposed to the possibility of a ban on the use of electronic shock collars for dogs following the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine opening a public consultation on the matter inviting interested parties to make submissions.

Minister Norma Foley congratulates aspiring Kerry scientists Minister for Education and Kerry T.D, Norma Foley, has praised the performance of Kerry schools in the BT Young Scientist competition. There were 27 projects from eight different Kerry post-primary schools which qualified for the exhibition in the RDS, Dublin last week. A number of projects won category awards and one project by sisters Ciara and Saoirse Murphy from Presentation Secondary School, Tralee won a national award. Sarah Abbott, a teacher from Pobalscoil Inbhear Scéine, Kenmare, won the Stripe Chemical, Physical and Mathematical Science Educator of Excellence Award. Minister Foley said: “The BT Young Scientist exhibition is one of my favourite events of the year. There were outstanding entries from all around the country, but I was particularly proud to see the excellent standard of projects from schools in my home county.” Minister Foley personally spoke to many of the students from the eight Kerry schools which featured at the BT Young Scientist exhibition in the RDS. There were students from C.B.S. Secondary School, Tralee, Killorglin Community College, Mercy Secondary School Mounthawk, Tralee, Pobalscoil Inbhear Scéine, Kenmare, Presentation Secondary School Listowel, Presentation Secondary School, Tralee, Tarbert Comprehensive School and Scoil Phobail Sliabh Luachra in Rathmore. Their projects included investigations into the use of artificial intelligence in the classroom, the misuse of over-thecounter medicine, the best probiotic for gut health, and the level of microplastics

in fish in Kenmare Bay. There were also projects from Kerry schools examining myths and misconceptions in the GAA, and the development of a pedal chest compression device for cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and also the creation of an accessible technological aid to assist in medical emergencies. Minister Foley said: “There was a rich array of projects from the students in all the Kerry schools at the exhibition. I think the most outstanding feature of the projects is the absolute dedication and enthusiasm of the students. I must also acknowledge the enormous support and guidance provided by teachers and school communities for the students and not forgetting their families who also walked the journey with them. Minister Foley also congratulated Seán O’Sullivan from Coláiste Chiaráin in Limerick, who won the top prize for developing a new system to assess whether articles were written by humans or by artificial intelligence tools like ChatGPT. The recently published 2022 results of the OECD Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) show that 15-year-olds in Ireland significantly outperform many of their counterparts across the OECD in science. Minister Foley said: “It is interesting to note that Science literacy among Irish students has improved by 8 per cent in the recent Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) results. Ireland has moved up from twenty-second to twelfth-ranked place among the 37 countries in the OECD in recent years. It shows the fantastic work that is being done in the area of science by our students and staff.”

The proposal which has the backing of Fine Gael Senator Regina Doherty would see the outright ban on electric dog collars for domestic owners and could lead further to other livestock solutions being affected. “This is totally wrong and a backward step. This modern technology which means an area can be fenced to control a dog is most welcome. "I would compare it to the electric fencers that have been used for many years

on our farms which is an essential tool for our livestock control. If these collars are banned for dogs, then what is the difference between electric methods being used to control a dog or being used to control livestock?" “If you were to take a large bull on a farm trying to control that bull without the benefit of an electric fence it would be impossible and dangerous beyond belief,” Deputy Michael Healy Rae said before making his own submission. The Kerry TD has called on people to actively voice their own opinions and engage in the submission process, so that they can oppose this change. “There is a lot more pressing issues that the Department could be engaging with for the farming and rural community at the moment especially with the financial squeeze being put of farm families” Michael Healy Rae concluded.

Pa Daly TD blames emigration on government’s housing policy Speaking after news reported in the Sunday Times that 21,000 visas were issued by Australia to Irish citizens, Pa Daly, Sinn Fein TD for Kerry, has commented on the impact of emigration on the county. “For generations, Kerry people have understood emigration as a way of life. Families have sent off their young people with their best wishes, in the understanding that better opportunities lie abroad and the hope that they will stay in touch, and harbouring a hope they

may some day return. But what is different now compared to the past is Kerry is part of a country that is amongst the richest in the world". “Why are so many people leaving at a time when we should be able to provide comfort, safety and opportunity for all? The key lies in the government’s housing policy, which has prioritised commodification and private investment, and failed Co. Kerry badly. A lack of investment in infrastructure has also meant few jobs locally for educated young people."

Mid-Kerry Biddies gearing up for a festival weekend In the heart of the mid-Kerry region, the annual Biddy's Day Festival (February 1 - 3) promises to be a vibrant celebration of tradition, community, and the age-old craft-making skills that have defined Irish heritage. This year's festivities take place in Killorglin. At the core of the Biddy's Day celebration is the timeless tradition of Biddy groups, a unique custom that sees these spirited people don straw hats and carry Brídeóg dolls on visits to both rural and public houses. Their mission? To weave a protective spell against evil spirits, ensuring the well-being of both humans and animals in the year ahead. A visit from the Biddy, steeped in history and meaning, is said to bring good fortune, fertility, and prosperity. Held during the February Bank Holiday weekend, the 2024 program includes traditional craft-making workshops (including Biddy’s hat-making), the art of crafting traditional crosses, sugan weaving, and more.

The Biddy's Day Parade with take place on February 3, where onlookers can watch as Biddy groups from various townlands proudly march up the main street followed by dancing and music on the Plaza in Library Place. This year's festival carries a poignant undertone as the committee pays homage to its founder and chairman, Conor Browne (41), who passed away in July after a courageous battle with illness. Conor's vision and spirit have guided the festival's organisation, and a new plaque will be unveiled in the Poet Pucks Garden on Saturday, Feb 3rd. The festival will conclude with a lively Biddy Ball, featuring live music across various venues, and a special Biddy’s Day Cocktail served at Falvey's Bar.

CAN'T HURT ME

THE MOUNTAIN IS YOU

• BY DAVID GOGGINS

• BY BRIANNA WIEST

THE MAMBA MENTALITY HOW I PLAY

In his captivating memoir, "Can't Hurt Me," David Goggins shares his extraordinary journey from an overweight, unmotivated young man to one of the world's most accomplished endurance athletes and Navy Seals. Born into poverty and subjected to physical and emotional abuse, Goggins grew up feeling worthless and hopeless. He was overweight, struggled with low self-esteem, and lacked the motivation to change his life. But at age 20, something clicked. A profound self-awareness and an unwavering determination ignited a burning desire within him to break free from his circumstances and achieve greatness.

In her insightful book "The Mountain is You," Brianna Wiest challenges the notion that our external challenges are the primary obstacles to our growth and fulfilment. She asserts that the true mountain we must climb lies within ourselves, in the form of our self-sabotaging behaviours, limiting beliefs, and unresolved emotional baggage. Wiest delves into the deep-rooted causes of self-sabotage, explaining how our conflicting needs and fears often lead us to sabotage our own progress. She explores the power of our subconscious minds and how our early experiences can shape our emotional responses, often leading to self-limiting patterns.

• KOBE BRYANT In "The Mamba Mentality: How I Play," legendary basketball player Kobe Bryant shares his hard-won insights on the principles that drove his extraordinary success. Drawing on his decades of experience in the NBA, Bryant unveils the "Mamba Mentality," a relentless pursuit of excellence that demands unwavering dedication, resilience, and self-belief. Through personal anecdotes and in-depth reflections, Bryant delves into the mental and physical rigors required to achieve greatness. He emphasises the importance of continuous learning, mastering one's craft through obsessive practice, and embracing challenges as opportunities for growth.

A fitness tribe offers numerous benefits that can help you stay motivated, accountable, and challenged throughout your fitness journey.

FIND YOUR FITNESS TRIBE IN KILLARNEY

Revving up your metabolism Strategies to Boost Your Body's Natural Fat-Burning Engine Metabolism, the process by which your body converts food into energy, plays a crucial role in weight management. A faster metabolism means your body burns more calories at rest, making it easier to lose weight and maintain a healthy physique. Fortunately, there are several lifestyle changes you can make to give your metabolism a boost.

INCREASE PROTEIN INTAKE

Protein is an essential nutrient that requires more energy to digest than carbohydrates or fats. This means that eating protein-rich meals can temporarily increase your metabolism. Aim to include protein sources such as lean meats, fish, poultry, beans, lentils, and nuts at every meal.

STRENGTH TRAINING

Muscle mass is a key determinant of metabolism. Building and maintaining muscle increases your body's capacity to burn calories, even at rest. Strength training exercises, such as lifting weights or bodyweight exercises, are particularly effective in increasing metabolism.

STAY HYDRATED

Water plays a vital role in various bodily functions, including metabolism. When you're dehydrated, your body's metabolic processes slow down. Aim to drink plenty of water throughout the day, especially before and after exercise.

PRIORITISE SLEEP

Sleep deprivation can negatively impact metabolism by disrupting hormones that regulate appetite and energy expenditure. Aim for 7-8 hours of quality sleep each night to optimise your metabolism and overall health.

LIMIT ADDED SUGARS

Added sugars provide empty calories and can hinder metabolism. Reducing your intake of sugary drinks, processed foods, and desserts can help boost your metabolism and promote overall health.

MANAGE STRESS

Chronic stress can lead to the release of cortisol, a hormone that can slow down metabolism. Implementing stress-management techniques, such as yoga,

meditation, or deep breathing exercises, can help promote a healthy metabolism. Remember, boosting your metabolism is a gradual process. Consistent lifestyle changes over time will yield noticeable results in your weight management and overall well-being.

Saudi Arabia opens first alcohol shop in 70 years In a bid to curb the illicit trade of alcohol in Saudi Arabia, authorities have announced the establishment of an exclusive alcohol store catering exclusively to diplomatic staff. This initiative comes in response to a long-standing prohibition on alcohol in the country, which has been in effect since 1952, stemming from a tragic in-

cident involving one of King Abdulaziz's sons who fatally shot a British diplomat while under the influence. The unique establishment will be located in Riyadh's prestigious Diplomatic Quarter, situated to the west of the city centre. Diplomatic staff will have access to a wide range of alcoholic beverages through this official channel, a stark contrast to the past practice of importing booze in sealed official packages known

as diplomatic pouches. Saudi officials hope that the introduction of this dedicated store will effectively combat the illicit trade of alcohol within the kingdom. According to sources familiar with the plans, the store is set to open its doors within the coming weeks, providing a controlled and legitimate source for diplomatic personnel to obtain alcoholic beverages. There are limitations!

Thirsty envoys would need to register beforehand No one under 21 will be allowed in the store and "proper attire" is required Monthly limitations would be enforced, the statement said.

The fortunate winner, a man, did not delay in claiming his life-changing prize, marking him as the inaugural National Lottery millionaire this year. While specific details about the winner are yet to be disclosed, this event has certainly brought excitement to the county.

Trump CORNER

Trump's verbal gaffes delight his opponents President Biden and his allies are aiming to reverse the narrative by spotlighting former President Trump's mental fitness for office after a prominent verbal gaffe during a campaign rally. Democrats, including Biden himself, widely circulated a clip of Trump repeatedly confusing former Speaker Nancy Pelosi with Nikki Haley while discussing the January 6 Capitol attack. Biden, 81, has faced ongoing criti-

cism regarding his age, verbal missteps, and overall mental fitness. Democrats saw an opportunity to put Trump, 77, under similar scrutiny due to the Pelosi-Haley mix-up. "A deeply confused Trump confuses Nancy Pelosi and Nikki Haley multiple times," the Biden campaign's rapid response team posted on X, formerly known as Twitter. Former Biden White House press secretary Jen Psaki emphasized

that it was "significant" that Haley herself questioned Trump's mental fitness after the incident. However, these attacks on Trump carry substantial risks for Democrats. Biden's age remains a concern for some voters, and by highlighting Trump's gaffes, they open the door for Republicans to do the same the next time Biden stumbles. The president and his team have countered by arguing that Biden's age brings more wisdom to the job, and Biden himself has used humour to deflect attacks on his age. It appears to this publication both candidates should invest in some good quality home help!

Toy Show Musical hits the wrong notes in report A damning report into RTE’s Toy Show The Musical shows that there is no written record of the RTE Board ever granting its approval for the musical. The shows budget of €2.2 million (yes €2.2 million!) was not approved until the contract with the venue was signed off. Procedures for approving projects over €2 million were not followed. Local TD Brendan Griffin, who is not running in the next election, has called for RTE Director General Kevin Bakhurst and chair of the board Siún Ní Raghallaigh to be brought before the Oireachtas Media

Committee. The Toy Show fiasco is certain to keep rolling over the next few weeks as TDs revisit the costings and analyse the new report. The show sold a total of 11,000 tickets at €46.50 per ticket in the Convention Centre. The high production costs and overspend on marketing by €183,000 meant the show had to have 70% ticket sales for every show just to break even. In addition, of the 20,000 people who saw the show, only 11,044 were paying ticket holders. Expect this story to run and run.

Minister for Finance protects ATM access The new Access to Cash Bill will ensure that ATM levels are maintained at 2022 levels.

ECB holds rates, inflation remains high The European Central Bank met on Thursday to review interest rates. In a move that will hurt variable rate mortgage holders, the ECB has chosen not to reduce interest rates due to inflation. Mortgage holders on variable and tracker rates have been most affected by the ECB rate hikes and those held by so called ‘vulture funds.’ The situation in the Middle East and the important Red Sea transport route, which is responsible for 15% of global trade, is holding back rate cuts, according to ECB President Christine Lagarde. In Ireland, annual inflation surged to 4.6% in December compared to 2.9% across the eurozone. The current ECB interest rate is 4%. A spate of business closures nationally is causing concern, and local businesses in Killarney are concerned for the coming tourist season with several businesses closing. It appears a perfect storm has hit the

business sector and those specifically tourist related. The increase in VAT from 9% to 13.5% is a major bone of contention along with the increase in the minimum wage hourly rate to €12.70. Coupled with raw material inflation it is forcing many businesses to close. The increase in reporting required by Revenue and the persistent high costs of insurance are making it difficult for business to sustain themselves. It isn’t just a local or national problem, eurozone business activity also contracted in January.

The Minister acknowledged that cash was in decline with €13.5 billion withdrawn in 2022 versus €20 million in 2019. The Minister highlighted that ATMs are managed by a combination of financial institutions and independent operators. Michael McGrath asserted that the bill would provide an assurance that there will be no reduction in the overall accessibility. Speaking on RTE Radio One this week he said that the Central Bank will have the capability to assess ATM availability in specific regions.

Mr. McGrath expressed his belief that a lack of intervention could result in more ATMs being withdrawn and a decline in the ability to use cash. He informed Morning Ireland of his conviction that there are particular situations where the acceptance of cash is essential for the benefit of society. However, he clarified that this does not imply that every business or retailer will be mandated to accept cash. Minister McGrath also acknowledged the expenses associated with handling cash for businesses. Nevertheless, he contended that if efforts are being made to ensure people have access to cash, they must also have the ability to use it. The Minister also conveyed his personal preference for carrying cash.

Sera Husky and Animal Rescue visit St. Brendan's Our Transition year students had a visit today from Sera Husky and Animal Rescue, in connection with their Animal Welfare and Care Module. We are very lucky to have built up a strong relationship with this animal rescue over the past three years and are very grateful for the visits in to our school as well as the visits out to the rescue centre in Lisselton each year. We appreciate how busy rescue life is and we appreciate Maurice taking time out of his day to help educate our boys in what is a hugely important issue in Ireland today. With the state of animal care

and welfare being at crisis point in Ireland and with the animal shelters full to capacity and beyond with unwanted and abused animals. We are very privileged in St Brendan’s to be able to educate our boys in animal care. This Module not only builds on their education but also further develops their skills of compassion and empathy. Huge thanks to Maurice, Skipper and Winnie for taking the time to visit us today. “Rescue does not mean damaged. It means they have been let down by humans.” Let’s hope that education can help combat what is a heartbreaking issue.

Students of French in TY and 5th year undertook a marathon 13 hour journey this weekend to renew our link with Lycée Blaise Cendrars. Upon arrival, we were bussed to

the school canteen where our hosts provided wonderful hospitality by means of a pizza party! The exchange is now 10 years old, but this is our 1st exchange since Covid. Situated high in the Jura mountains in the Northwestern corner of Swit-

zerland, La Chaux is a beautiful town which is reputed for watchmaking. Each of our 14 students have been matched with a Swiss partner, with whom they will stay and travel to school daily. There are many activities planned for

the week, including ice skating, sledding and attending a Premier league ice hockey match. It won't all be fun and games however as the school days stretch from 8am to 5pm! The Swiss will return to Killarney in late February.

Screening of 'Gaza' Documentary this Friday On Friday January 26, The Kerry Branch of The Irish Palestinian Solidarity Campaign will hold a screening of the the film 'Gaza' in St Mary's Church of Ireland in Killarney, with director Garry Keane and producer Alison Twomey. | Pa Daly calls for Kerry TD’s to stop vulture funds

Sinn Féin TD for Kerry, Pa Daly, has said that Kerry TDs must stand up for the people of Kerry and vote in favour of Sinn Féin’s motion to stop vulture funds from bulk-purchasing homes from under the feet of struggling home buyers. Deputy Daly was speaking ahead of the vote on the motion, which will take place on Wednesday evening. Teachta Daly said, “On Wednesday evening, the Dáil will vote on our motion to tackle the unacceptable practice of investment funds snapping up family homes. I am calling on all other Kerry TDs to stand up for workers, families and aspiring home-owners in Kerry by voting to support Sinn Féin’s motion to end this scandalous practice. Figures released to Sinn Féin Finance spokesperson Pearse Doherty by the Department of Finance show that since the government’s half-baked measures were introduced, over 1,200 homes have been snapped up by these funds.”

Rally of the Lakes to be included in new Stellantis Motorsport Rally Cup The Assess Ireland Rally of the Lakes will be included in the allnew Stellantis Motorsport Rally Cup. Launched this week, the one-make championship for drivers of Peugeot 208 and Opel Corsa Rally 4 cars will take in some of the biggest rallies in Ireland and Britian. The Cup will follow the Irish Tarmac Rally Championship and Probite British Rally Championship, tackling four rounds of each series on both gravel and asphalt surfaces. The calendar has been constructed to offer the most challenging events on both sides of the Irish Sea, ensuring the greatest competition for all contenders and preparation for the future for career-minded youngsters. Open to all ages, the Cup will offer €6,000 of prize money in each round, with €3,000 going to the highest-placed competitor in every event. Second place receives €1,750, third €750, fourth €500 and fifth receives one Michelin Motorsport tyre from distributors Protyre Motorsport Ireland. For those competitors under 26 years old on 1st January 2024, a Junior prize is also available for the highest-placed Junior contender at the end of the season. The winner will receive registration to the 2025 FIA Junior European Rally Championship, entry fees to six rounds of the Junior ERC and 12 tyres per round contested in the series, worth almost €40,000. It also includes registration to the Irish Tarmac Rally Championship and Probite British Rally Championship for the 2024 season, ensuring competitors can also chase the respective titles should they so choose. The Cup will kick off in Ireland, with the highly anticipated West Cork Rally in

March, before heading onto the gravel for the Rallynuts Severn Valley Stages in April. Killarney Rally of the Lakes marks backto-back asphalt events, with the Donegal International Rally following on in June. The Voyonic Grampian Forest Rally takes crews into Scotland in August, before the Cup joins the European Rally Championship and British Rally Championship crews at the JDS Machinery Rali Ceredigion in September. Cork 20 International marks the final asphalt round before the Visit Conwy Cambrian Rally brings the curtain down on the season in October as crews face the famous Wales Rally GB stages to potentially decide the title. Seven rounds from eight will count towards the final score. “I'm very excited to finally release the championship regulations and declare registrations open for the Stellantis Motorsport Rally Cup IRE & UK,” said Stellantis Motorsport Rally Cup registrar. Raymond Moore. “Both Ireland and the UK have really been missing this kind of series which welcomes all drivers but also offers the progressive youngster an opportunity to further their careers. The Junior ERC is highly competitive and the perfect proving ground, so it made total sense to construct a calendar which offers the best events on both sides of the water, ensuring they are as ready as possible to take their careers to the next level. “Interest has already been high, and we have talked to an encouraging number of crews who want to join us. Of course, we welcome anyone interested in taking part and we can always assist in locating Peugeot 208 or Corsa Rally4’s for the series. “I look forward to seeing everyone in Cork in March, it will be a very exciting moment to see the series finally get off the ground.”

A 50 year fight for 26.01.2024

The murder of Patsy Kelly and the Kerry connection | By Chris Davies Hailing from Trillick, a small village in County Tyrone, Patsy Kelly was a publican by trade but he was also a prominent independent nationalist councillor serving in Omagh in the 1970’s. His public career began as a grassroots civil rights activistbut he quickly climbed the ranks and went on to serve as a councillor. Described as “a lovely gentle man”, Patsy was running the Corner bar in Tullick with his brother-in-law. He was passionate about politics but the bar was means to make more money to support his wife, Teresa, and his young family. The couple had four children and Teresa was expecting their fifth child in that fatal Summer of 1974. That 5th child of Teresa and Patsy is now an adult, and is also called Patrick after his

late father. He now resides in Killorglin with his wife, Helen. I got to learn about this case through my dealings with Helen, who is the Marketing Manager with PST Lawns. I caught up with ‘Paddy’ (as he affectionately known in Killorglin) this week to learn more about his father’s death and the subsequent long and infuriating fight for justice. It was early on the morning of July 24th, 1974 when Patsy went missing. The chain of events that led to his disappearance that night are unclear but after locking up the Corner Bar around mid-night, he never made it home. It was at the gates of their home earlier that evening when Teresa said she last saw her husband. She can recall Patsy dropping her back to the family home after her day shift in the pub. He gave the children hugs and kisses before setting off for work which was less than two miles away.

Patsy’s wife Teresa Kelly worked day shifts at the bar to help support their children, who were all under the age of six at the time. She knew his schedule and movements so it didn’t take her long to figure out something wasn’t right. Thousands joined daily searches of the surrounding countryside, all co-ordinated from the grounds of the local GAA club's Donnelly Park in Trillick but it was almost three weeks after he was reported missing that Patsy Kelly's was found dead. The 35-year-old’s body was found by fishermen in Lough Eyes, Co Fermanagh, about 20 miles from where he worked. The Tyrone man’s body was found with six bullet wounds. A green nylon rope had been fastened around his waist, tethering a weight, intended to submerge him in a nearby lake. Today, a crucifix and a memorial plaque stand as tribute at the location where traces of Patsy and his clothing were discovered. The UDR (Ulster Defence Regiment) had a checkpoint set up just outside the village of Trillick that night. Rumours began to circulate in the tightknit village shortly after the murder that the British army unit set up in 1970, had been involved. An Inquest

Tyrone publican Patsy Kelly was murdered in July 1974.

into the death of Patsy Kelly delivered an ‘open verdict’ on the case. No one has ever been arrested, charged or convicted for his murder and ever since, the family have been fighting for answers and justice. Paddy has spent most of his adult life fighting for the truth, and in April of last year the family got some news that they thought would help their cause. Speaking to me this week, Paddy recalls the moment last April, when a major report by the Police Ombudsman in Northern Ireland found that his family was failed by the investigation into the killing which was “wholly inadequate” and that there was evidence of “collusive behaviours” between some security force members and loyalist paramilitaries. The first inquest held after Patsy murder was branded a “whitewash” by the family and Paddy spoke about how the report brought fresh hope to the family that they would finally get a new inquest. "The publication of the Police Ombudsman's report was the culmination of years of beating down the door to get access to truth. For years we had pushed and pushed for its publication because we knew what the report would contain - namely that all elements of the British state security services were involved in abducting and murdering my father. We were completely and utterly vindicated as a family that day, everything we had alleged was proven to be correct and to see it in public record was extremely emotional & poignant. In the days that followed, my mother told me how she felt as if a weight had lifted off her, she felt a sense of peace and calm that she hadn't felt since before my father had been abducted."

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS

National Minimum Wage National Minimum Wage Generally, the amount of pay you get for working is agreed between you and your employer. Pay negotiations normally happen when you get a job offer. However, most employees are entitled to a minimum wage under the National Minimum Wage Act 2000 The national minimum wage does not stop an employer from offering you a higher wage. You cannot agree to be paid less than the minimum wage or to do unpaid work, unless you are employed by a close family relative or are on a recognised apprenticeship. What is the minimum wage in 2024? From 1 January 2024, the national minimum wage for people aged 20 and over will increase by €1.40 to €12.70 per hour.

Helen and Paddy Kelly who are now residing in Killorglin.

tified by the Attorney General, Brenda King that there will not be a fresh inquest”. “We immediately called on the Attorney General to grant a fresh inquest based on the findings of that report. Unbelievably, this request was refused so we once again had to take legal action against the Attorney General in June of last year. A hearing took place in the High Court in Belfast & a few days later the Attorney General performed a u-turn when she informed our solicitors that a new inquest was in fact being granted”. Late last year the UK government moved ahead with the Northern Ireland Troubles (Legacy and Reconciliation) Bill, seriously hampering the Kelly family and many other families the hopes of getting justice. The procedure that previously existed for addressing these cases, involved the use of the legal system through criminal and civil investigations as well as inquests, under the new bill, this will now be discontinued. Instead, they will be supplanted by a new investigative entity known as the “Independent Commission for Reconciliation and Information Recovery” (ICRIR). This commission possesses the authority to potentially grant conditional amnesties to individuals

involved in crimes during the troubles. The move the UK Government to move unilaterally on the bill has forced the Irish Government to challenge the UK in the European Court of Human Rights. A case Paddy and the rest of his family will be watching closely. “Now, due to the UK's Legacy Act we've been told that due to a lack of resources that our inquest will not be heard before the cut-off date of 1st May 2024. We and so many other families are being denied our human rights by not being provided with access to a proper inquest. This is why we strongly welcome the Irish government's decision to bring an inter-state case against the UK in order to stand up for those who have bereaved by the conflict in the North." The 50th anniversary of Councillor Patsy Kelly's abduction & murder will take place on 24th July of this year and Paddy promises he will continue to fight for justice in relation to his father’s murder. ”A full 50 years of lies, obstruction and cover-up by the British state. And now the Legacy Act implemented by the morally corrupt Tory party seeks to close the door on truth to our family and so many others. All families who seek it should have access to truth, all families.”

How is my hourly rate calculated? Your hourly rate is calculated by dividing your gross pay by the total number of hours you have worked. This is set out in the National Minimum Wage Act 2000 Section 20. Your working hours include overtime, and travel time where this is part of the job. Time spent on training that your employer approved and during normal working hours, is also included. Your employer must include details of the pay reference period in your statement of employment conditions, as set out in the Terms of Employment (Information) Act 1994-2014 (as amended). You can ask your employer for a written statement of your average rate of pay for any pay reference period within the last 12 months. The employer has 4 weeks to give you the statement. Are all workers entitled to receive the minimum wage? No. You are not entitled to get the national minimum wage if you are employed by a close relative (for example, a spouse, civil partner or parent. Neither are you entitled to it, if you are In a statutory apprenticeship or you are aged under 20 What is the minimum wage for workers aged under 20? Workers aged under 18 are entitled to €8.89 per hour which is 70% of the minimum wage. Workers aged 18 are entitled to€10.16 per hour (80%) and workers aged 19 are entitled to€11.43 per hour, which is 90% of the full minimum wage. Those aged 20 and over receive €12.70 per hour What happens if my employer cannot pay me the minimum wage? If your employer cannot afford to pay the minimum wage due to financial difficulty, the Labour Court can give them permission, or exempt them, from paying the minimum wage rate for between 3 months and one year. Only one ex-

emption is allowed. The employer must apply to the Labour Court for the exemption, and they must have the agreement of a majority of employees. The employer and the employees must all agree to follow the decision of the Labour Court. The employer must show that they are unable to pay the minimum wage and that if they had to pay it, they would need to lay off or dismiss employees. Employers can only be exempt from paying the full rate of the minimum wage. They cannot be exempt from paying the reduced rate (for example, to employees under 18). Can I be victimised by my employer for seeking the minimum wage? If you ask your employer to pay the minimum wage, you are protected by law from victimisation or dismissal. If you are dismissed for asking for the minimum wage, you can bring a claim for unfair dismissal. You can do this no matter how long you have worked for your employer or how many hours you work each week. If you are due an increase under the National Minimum Wage Act, your employer may try to cut your working hours to avoid an increase in the overall cost of your pay. However, they cannot do this without also reducing your duties or the amount of work. How can I make a complaint if I am not receiving the minimum wage? If you are not getting the minimum wage, you should speak with your employer first. If you cannot resolve the problem with your employer, you can complete the online complaint form on workplacerelations.ie. You can get advice and assistance from your local Citizens Information Centre to do this. What is the living wage? A national living wage will replace the national minimum wage from 2026. The living wage will be set at 60% of the median wage in any given year. The national minimum wage will remain in place until the 60% living wage is fully phased in. The national minimum wage will increase over the years as usual. If you need further information about any of the issues raised here or you have other questions, you can drop-in to your local Citizens Information Service in Tralee, Killarney or Caherciveen – opening hours are listed on our website www.citizensinformation.ie You can also contact us by telephone or email: Killarney, Tel: 0818 07 7820 Email: killarney@citinfo.ie

I want to start at the beginning and talk a little about what you need to have in place before applying for any new role or thinking about a career change. These key things are: 1. An up-to-date CV 2. A LinkedIn profile 3. A professional network of contacts So starting at the beginning – your CV. What is a CV and what should it contain? Your CV is a document which should reflect your key skills and achievements and it should contain the following: • a short personal statement – this should include details of who you are, where you are in your career, your career goals for the future. It should be a short paragraph - 3/4 sentences. • y our educational history and achievements – include the date, the educational facility, the results. Don’t forget to include any educational projects, any prizes or scholarships, any posts held at University. • y our work experience (employers, dates), any specific projects you have worked on. Your work experience must demonstrate your skills, your achievements and your key responsibilities within each role. I cannot stress that enough.

Join the Sliabh Luachra Music Trail The unique music style of Sliabh Luachra is an integral part of our cultural heritage. Musicians and festival organisers are central to ensuring this musical tradition flourishes today. Kerry County Council Arts Service, in collaboration with Cork County Council and Limerick County Council Arts Services work to support and foster this distinctive aspect of our living culture. People interested in Sliabh Luachra Music are

invited to attend a networking session on the Sliabh Luachra Music Trail, Monday 29th January in the River Island Hotel, Castleisland at 7pm sharp. A number of Kerry festivals and events are integral to the Sliabh Luachra Music Trail, these include; The Con Curtin Music Festival, Brosna (June 28th-June 30th), The Handed Down Series, Scartaglin (September to April), World Fiddle Day (Scartaglin May 18th), the and the Patrick O’Keeffe Festival, Castleisland (October 24th-28th). These events are

supported by the local communities, the Local Authority and many other sponsors and supporters. Anyone interested in contributing to the Sliabh Luachra Music Trail Network meeting, is welcome at 7pm at the River island Hotel on Monday 29th January to discuss the overall work and needs of the Trail, and potential to grow awareness of this unique musical heritage, please RSVP your attendance to arts@ kerrycoco.ie. Teas and coffees will be served on arrival.

• y our interests outside of work and anything you have achieved. • y our referees – I recommend putting the words ‘Available on Request’ Please do not make the mistake of making your CV a list of tasks you have done in a job. You must break the task down into to the skill used, the responsibility and the outcome of that task. I always recommend briefly explaining any gaps in your CV e.g. time taken for travel or any care responsibilities you may have had. A CV should really be no more than 2 A4 pages. It should be authentic and reflect you. A CV should never contain the following – lies(!), irrelevant professional experience, personal information, salary details, spelling mistakes and an unprofessional email address. This really is only a whistle-stop tour of what a CV should be and I could write much more – I hope it does give the basics of what your CV should look like. Next column – your LinkedIn profile and building a professional network. If you have any questions or topics you would like me to cover, please contact me: teresa@meetyourcareercoach.com or 085 169 3541

Anniversary mass on Saturday 27th January at 6:15pm in St. Mary’s Cathedral, Killarney.

• 76% of supporters think Kerry will reach another All-Ireland final • 62% predict All-Ireland title No. 39 is on the way The annual Killarney Advertiser startof-season survey has revealed Kerry supporters’ expectations for the 2024 campaign, which gets up and running on Saturday with a home league match against Derry. Kerry’s 2023 season was a mixed bag. Inconsistent league form saw them finish fifth in Division 1 but they reached the All-Ireland final after a string of improved performances in the All-Ireland group stage and knockout rounds. They

ultimately fell at the final hurdle, however, as Dublin triumphed in a tense decider at Croke Park. After understandably struggling to replicate their 2022 heroics last year, many pundits expect Kerry to bounce back and the results of our poll indicate that fans have high hopes for 2024. 76% of survey respondents think that Kerry will reach the All-Ireland final again this year with the vast majority of this cohort (62%) predicting that

Sam Maguire will be returning to the Kingdom in July. This is a significantly higher percentage than last year when only 42% of supporters felt Kerry would claim the ultimate prize. That means that 14% reckon Kerry will get to the final and lose, while roughly a quarter (24%) predict that they will fall at the semi-final stage. Last year, when asked what would constitute a “good” year for Kerry, 54% of those polled said only an All-Ireland title

would do. 32% said they would be content with reaching the final. These figures are significantly different for 2024. Now, 79% of fans say they will only be happy if Kerry win the All-Ireland, while 14% would accept another All-Ireland final appearance. Neighbours Cork defeated Kerry in last weekend’s McGrath Cup final but, much like last year, it appears as though the green and gold faithful are placing little stock in that particular result. Once again, 96% of supporters expect Kerry to win the Munster Championship. As for the National League, Kerry will be without some key first team players for the opening rounds, but supporters’ expectations are still markedly higher than last year. Roughly 41% think that Kerry will win Division 1 (up from 21% in 2023) and 17% think they will get to the final and lose. A good number of fans have been more conservative with their predictions, though: 42% are projecting a third or fourth place finish. Jack O’Connor’s side host Derry in Austin Stack Park on Saturday in their first competitive outing of the season. Throw-in is at 5.30pm. The match will be televised on RTÉ.

New dawn for Kerry as Derry come south

Kingdom welcome Ulster champs to Tralee for league opener NATIONAL LEAGUE: DIV 1

_________________________________________________________________________

Almost six months on from that agonising defeat to Dublin, the Kerry footballers are finally back in competitive action tomorrow as they get their National League campaign started at home to Derry. Of course, the last meeting between these teams, that thrilling All-Ireland semi-final last July, is still very fresh in the memory. The Ulster champions gave Kerry a real fright and they led by two points with just ten minutes to go thanks in no small part to the excellent kicking of Shane McGuigan. The Kingdom finished strongly, though, and a powerful run of five straight scores gave them the upper hand as time ran out. There was only a goal in it when the last play came around; unfortunately for Derry, McGuigan inadvertently pointed a free when he wanted to drop it into the square, and Kerry advanced to the final. There’s no doubt that Derry would love to exact some sort of revenge in tomorrow’s league opener (although real revenge won’t be on the cards until the summertime). Derry’s new manager Mickey Harte indicated that he would like his Glen contingent to be back on board for their trip south, despite their involvement in last Sunday’s All-Ireland Senior Club final. He did, however, clarify that he wouldn’t be putting Conor Glass and co. under any pressure to play after a long club season, and possibly a heavy week of celebrations. Even if they are without the likes of Glass, Ethan Doherty and Ciarán McFaul, Derry have a strong panel to choose from. Eleven players who started last year’s All-Ireland semi-final also started the recent McKenna Cup final against Donegal (which they won). As for Kerry, Saturday’s game comes too soon for David Clifford and new captain Paudie Clifford, both of whom have just recently returned to training. The Fossa pair are not likely to be seen until the home match against Mayo in Round 3. Paul Geaney, whose wife Siún recently gave birth, and Tadhg Morley, who got married during the off-season, are also slightly behind in their preparations. Tony Brosnan is recovering from a back injury.

DUBLIN

Elsewhere in Division 1, Dublin welcome Monaghan to Croke Park on Saturday in another All-Ireland semi-final rematch from last year (7.30pm, TG4). Monaghan will be without talismanic goalkeeper Rory Beggan who is currently in the United States trying out to be a kicker in the NFL. Beggan is not expected to return to Gaelic football action until the end of March (and that’s only if he is unsuccessful in his bid to join the ranks of America’s most popular sport). Beggan will be a major loss for Vinny Corey’s team, who have earned a reputation for defying the odds and avoiding relegation. After Kerry, they are the longest-standing county in Division 1. They will be hoping that the loss of their goalkeeper and long range free taker will not prove fatal. Dublin will probably rest a number of their All-Ireland winning team in the opening stages of the league, with a view to reinstating them later as they ramp up for the championship. There are two more Division 1 games on Sunday, the first being a derby match between fierce Connacht rivals Galway and Mayo (1.45pm, TG4). Both sides will be very disappointed with how their respective seasons ended in 2023. Galway, who reached the final in 2022, lost to Mayo in the preliminary quarter-final and then Mayo were well beaten by Dublin in the quarter-final proper. This fixture is a rematch of last year’s Division 1 final, which Mayo won by 0-14 to 0-11. The final top-flight match of the weekend sees Tyrone host Roscommon in Healy Park (3.45pm, TG4). Roscommon won many admirers last season as they finished third in the league and later drew with Dublin in the All-Ireland group stage. They are not likely to have their St Brigid’s players after their appearance in last Sunday’s All-Ireland Club final so Tyrone will be fancied to make home advantage count. Brian Dooher and Feargal Logan’s side made a slow start to last year’s league, losing three of their first four matches. They avoided relegation in the end, but they will be keen to get points on the board early this time around.

Understrength Kerry ladies earn two points in capital

Eamonn Fitzgerald was in Parnell Park for a rematch of last year’s All-Ireland final Kerry v Dublin is always an attractive game, especially when it comes to football. It’s a new year and after the galling, disappointing defeat to the Dubs in 2023, I took the first opportunity to savour that same battle for supremacy when the opportunity arose on Saturday last. No, not the men’s team, but the ladies’ team, in Parnell Park. In 2023 Kerry LGFA won the National league Division 1 but lost out in the championship just like their male counterparts.

I have been a strong supporter of the LGFA games, not just at senior ladies’ level but also at the underage levels. Why? Quite simply because the excitement and entertainment provided in ladies’ football compensates for the lacuna in men’s football. The recent survey of the state of ladies' football indicates what so many supporters are missing. The key findings show that 59% of people have never attended a live female sporting event. 74% of peo-

ple think it’s a shame that women’s sport doesn’t get more attendees Half of the population think there is a lack of female sporting heroes. 65% of people think women’s sport does not get enough media coverage in Ireland. This column provides every deserved opportunity to highlight the worth of the LGFA. This is no mere tokenism based on gender, but simply because for the most part I find the ladies’ games more interesting, entertaining, exciting and home

to honest-to-goodness football where the skill levels and the patterns of play and game strategies are more appealing than the men's games.

NON-ATTENDANCE

Parnell Park under lights beckoned on Saturday evening last and by the 5.15pm throw-in time the stand was full. I joined the spectators. The prelude was dominated by the Dublin ladies who sent out a very strong message holding a big banner with the stark message ‘Sos Cogaidh

LAOCH NA HIMEARTHA: Emma Dineen of Kerry breaks away from Dublin's Leah Caffrey. Photo: Stephen Marken/Sportsfile.

65

26.01.2024 sa Phalaistín’ (‘Break from war in Palestine’). It was a very definite call by team members who share our nightly woes as thousands of people continue to suffer in the uncertainty of war in the Middle East. The suffering and death of innocent children is the most poignant of all. Before the game, they spelled out their call for a ceasefire in the war-torn areas where 85% of the population have been displaced. Storm Isha was only beginning to take off as Kerry played into the Donnycarney end. It certainly brought back fond memories of over half a century ago and my battles with St Vincent’s, then lords of Dublin club football. The spire of Donnycarney Church may have been the reason why the added third post deceived the Kerry forwards as so many of their efforts were pulled to the left, just like the Watties in the men’s All-Ireland at Croker less than 24 hours later. Kerry did get off to the ideal start when newcomer Jadyn Lucey pointed within 30 seconds. Darragh Long and Declan Quill didn’t look too uneasy as they walked up and down the sideline. However, I felt that Kerry might well rue those misses when they faced the strong breeze in the second half. I felt they needed at least a five-point advantage. Mind you, Dublin were also profligate, making the umpires largely redundant. They did have the only goal chance in the opening half when full forward Niamh Hetherton shot across the goal and wide. Kerry were very impressive but they were only four points ahead at the break, 0-5 to 0-1. Dublin had eight of their All-Ireland team starting and Kerry had only five – the odds favoured the hosts, but it was Kerry who kicked on. Kerry players from local clubs were very much to the fore, repelling the expected Dublin onslaught. Kayleigh Cronin (Dr

Crokes), who won her All-Star at full back in 2022, wore the number 6 geansaí and was superb in sealing off the centre and sweeping forward to turn defence into attack. Up front, Kerry grew in confidence especially when Glenflesk’s Emma Dineen timed her jump perfectly in the 40th minute to flick the ball to the Dublin net for the only goal of the game. Kerry assumed complete control, but in fairness to Mick Bohan’s Dublin side they plugged away and reduced the big Kerry lead. But there was never a doubt about the outcome as Kerry won 1-8 to 0-6. Yes, my half-time hunch was on the button in this five-point win. Kerry will be happy with an opening win over the Dubs, and they did it without Louise Ní Mhuirchteartaigh, the 2023 LGFA Footballer of the Year, as well as Síofra O’Shea. Tosach maith in defence of their 2023 league title. The main focus in 2024 is to lift the Brendan Martin Cup in the Hogan Stand, in memory of that Tullamore man who did so much to promote ladies’ football. Dublin won that 2023 final 0-18 to 1-10. Compare that with last Saturday's game which Kerry won 1-8 to 0-6; yes, the same five-point margin but remember the 2023 final when Hannah Tyrrell scored eight points. She also played in international rugby for Ireland and won a 6 Nations title in 2015. Fittingly, Glenflesk’s Emma Dineen (1-3) won the Player of the Match award. It was also satisfying to see Keri Ann Hanrahan (Legion) and Katie Brosnan (Firies) starting. Other local club representatives among the subs included Siobhán Burns (Dr Crokes), Erica McGlynn (Fossa), Fay O’Donoghue and Hannah O’Donoghue (both Beaufort). I was delighted to see so many subs getting game time when the Kerry managers ran the bench. Next up for Kerry is a home game against

Waterford on Sunday next in the Fitzgerald Stadium. If you wish to see all-out classy football, go along.

JACK VERSUS MICKEY

This Kerry v Derry opening league fixture under lights at Austin Stack Park, Tralee tomorrow (Saturday) night is the ideal crowd puller for many reasons. The chief one is that Kerry spectators are still smarting over the loss of the Sam Maguire to Dublin last July and they will be seeking answers and solutions, as will the players and management. At low water, Kerry need at least one scoring forward to actually score and not depend on the Clifford brothers and Seán O’Shea. Midfield is not good enough to create the necessary possession. Diarmuid O’Connor is one and now that Jack Barry has taken a year off to travel, who will partner O’Connor? Joe O’Connor is the most likely starter, returning after a long injury. He showed up well in the McGrath Cup. Seán O’Brien will be the option to come on, while Cillian Burke, who did so well for Milltown/Castlemaine last year, will probably start at wing forward with the added duties to act as a third midfielder. It will be the Jack O’Connor v Mickey Harte roadshow tomorrow, two managers who have known the swings and roundabouts of intercounty management for several decades. Certain established players will be unavailable to both managers, but I expect they will still field strong teams. Jack is fortunate to have the fixture list in his favour, with four home games and just three away. In the league, all managers strive to win the home games to avoid any danger of relegation. Jack will be laying down a marker; so too will Harte. The Derry manager was very keen to win the Dr McKenna Cup, which he did at Healy Park on Saturday last by defeating Donegal 0-12 to 0-6. Midfielder Brendan Rogers was sent off in this game but he

will be available to play at the weekend as his suspension carries over to next year’s McKenna Cup. Kerry, meanwhile, lost 4-3 on penalties to Cork in Páirc Uí Rinn. The Kingdom used 11 subs, while Cork only used five. The McGrath Cup is welcome silverware for John Cleary’s Cork. Dublin were also beaten in the O’Byrne Cup in Leinster, by Longford.

SUPERVALU

The big story last week was the move to change the name of Páirc Uí Chaoimh. SuperValu would pump in €1.5 over five years, helping to reduce Cork’s crippling €30 million debt. Just like that. Not so, as the plain people of Rebel Cork cried foul. The deal was put on ice at the departure lounge and the flight did not take off… Not yet, anyway. Elsewhere, Watty Graham’s An Gleann (The Glen) are the newly crowned All-Ireland Senior Club champions. That is their official club name. The media note them as ‘The Glen’ but in Maghera (south Derry) they are very proud of their full name. Watty Graham was an elder in the local Presbyterian church and had been central to organising the 1798 rebellion’s activity in Maghera. He lost his head – literally - in the pursuit of justice when he was beheaded for his nationalistic principles. No danger in Maghera of dropping the name of their patriot for sponsorship. At Kerry level, could you imagine, Austin Stacks, Kerin’s O’Rahillys, or Dr Crokes, dropping their official names? They are often known by their nicknames such as The Rock, Strand Road or the Crokes, just as the new All-Ireland champions are well known as the Watties. Best of luck to the Kerry teams in action this weekend. The Kerry hurlers continue their training for their opening league game in Tralee the following week. They will need that advantage as Carlow have a fine team.

Cougars and Lakers set for local derby BIG WIN: The Killarney team who defeated Clonakilty in muddy conditions.

Killarney through to Munster League final The Killarney U18.5 girls advanced to the Munster League final after a superb 3-7 win away to Clonakilty last Saturday. Played in horrendous weather conditions, this was never going to be a high scoring game. Killarney won the toss and started with the wind, and they dominated both territory and possession for the entire half. However, they couldn’t convert several scoring opportunities; for example, after some good play by both Killarney backs and forwards, the out half Fia Whelan was held up over the line. The Clonakilty defence was excellent throughout the game and the score at half-time was 0-0. Right from the kick-off in the second half, Killarney showed they meant business. They continued to have long periods of possession but any mistakes were severely punished with the strong wind and the kicking tactics of the home side. The first points of the game went to Clonakilty who converted a penalty from just outside the 22 to make it 3-0.

Killarney attacked from the restart but again Clonakilty withheld the constant pressure. Then, with 15 minutes to go, Killarney gained valuable hard yards through a series of magnificent carries from Ava O’Malley, Lily Morris, Ella Guerin, Annie O’Reilly, Molly Gabbett and Cara Reilly. They went through nine phases, no mean feat as the conditions deteriorated, before Whelan saw the opportunity to unlock the home defence. She landed a perfect chip ahead over the on-rushing players and was just about to gather to go under the posts when she was tackled without the ball. The referee had no hesitation in awarding the penalty try, which made it 3-7 to the visitors. In the last fifteen minutes, both sides played incredibly impressive rugby and after some heroic tackling by the Kerry girls, notably Clodagh Foley, Melissa McCarthy, Ali O’Donoghue, and Joanne O’Keeffe, they held on for a well-deserved win. Next up for the Killarney girls is the Munster League final against Ennis on Saturday, February 3.

Local rivals the Killarney Cougars and Scotts Lakers will clash at the Pres Gym on Saturday night with crucial Men’s National League points – not to mention local bragging rights - on the line. Tip-off is at 7pm. The Lakers’ record against their neighbours is flawless since the Cougars entered the league in 2020 but fixtures between the teams have often been tense and hard-fought. Brian Clarke’s side are experiencing injury troubles of late and their recent run of three straight defeats only adds to the importance of this weekend’s derby. They are currently third in the Southern Conference and they will need to secure

Killarney hoping to field first senior camogie team in club’s history Following on from several years of great work at underage level, Killarney Camogie Club are hoping to field a team at senior level for the first time. If their dream is achieved it will be a massive step for the club, who are based in Spa but draw players from all over East Kerry. If successful, they will join Cillard and Causeway in the junior grade of Kerry camogie. Tralee Parnells are also in line to participate. “It would be a fairly big deal for a team from East Kerry to be competing at senior level,” Killarney Camogie Club chairman Seán Casey told the Killarney Advertiser.

WINNERS: The Killarney Camogie Club minor team who won the County League in 2023.

“Our coaches have done a lot of work over the past 10 years or so and we now have around 160 underage players on our books. It’s pretty vibrant at the mo-

points soon if they are to close the gap to SETU Carlow and the Limerick Celtics. The Cougars, meanwhile, are bottom of the conference with a record of 0-12, so picking up a victory against their crosstown rivals would be the sweetest possible way to get off the mark. Elsewhere, the Utility Trust St Paul’s women’s team will be aiming to keep their promotion charge on track when they host SETU Carlow at the Killarney Sports & Leisure Centre on Sunday. Tipoff is at 3pm. James Fleming’s team won the reverse fixture on opening day in comfortable fashion and a repeat of that performance should be enough to consolidate their place at the top of the Southern Conference.

ment. We have coaches and committee members from all over the country – Limerick, Cork, Tipperary, Clare, Dublin – which is great to see.”

The club currently have eight players in and around the Kerry minor panel and six Killarney players were in with the minors in 2023. This intercounty contingent are likely to form the backbone of the proposed senior team, but the club are actively seeking more players to join their ranks. “We would need a panel of 20-plus so we’re hoping that there are some adult players in the Killarney or East Kerry area who might like to get involved,” Casey said. Any prospective players who are interested in joining the club as they aim to make history are encouraged to contact Eimear on 087 6481736 or Caroline on 086 8452197. Killarney Camogie Club are also always on the lookout for extra volunteers and coaches. All garda vetting and safeguarding courses are provided by the club. SPORT NOTES

Killarney Athletic U16 PREMIER: Killarney Athletic 3-4 Tralee Dynamos. Finan Blackwell, Brian Macarthy, Evan Doona. Not our day in horrendous conditions in Woodlawn we fell behind to an early goal but equalised through a great finish from final, we conceded from the kick off and conceded another before the break. After the break we threw everything at dynamos and scored well worked goal started and finished by beano. We conceded another from a shot that hit a divot, the boys kept fighting and brought it to 4/3 through Evan but dynamos held out. Our first loss of the season but still in a great position in the league. U14: Killarney Athletic B 3-2 MEK A. Our boys came out the right side of a 5-goal thriller in tough conditions at home against a good sporting MEK side this morning. Two cracking free kicks from our Captain Mark Corkery either side of a Robert Murphy goal were enough to see us over the line. A great squad performance where grit, determination and some lovely football was enough to seal the win. U15 GIRLS PREMIER: Killarney Athletic 2 Camp 2. Fantastic team performance today by our Girls with Kelsey Cummins getting the brace. U12 CUP: Killarney Celtic 5-0 Killarney Athletic. The reigning league champions are at home this Sunday in Round 2, where they will meet Waterford in Fitzgerald Stadium with a 2pm throw in.
