“What makes the gardens at Powerscourt so remarkable is their grandeur of scale combined, as so rarely happens, with great delicacy and refinement of detail. Their setting is superb, but their design and execution are worthy of it. Meticulously kept, every part of the gardens rewards the closest study. Powerscourt is a magnificent example of an aristocratic garden laid out with taste, knowledge and imagination.” Peter Coats – “Great Gardens of the Western World”

A Warm Welcome to Powerscourt!
“Welcome to one of the most beautiful and inspiring places in the world! This is not just an empty boast. The prestigious Lonely Plant organisation selected it as one of the top ten houses and mansions to visit worldwide and the daily responses from our visitors continually confirm the life enhancing nature of visiting Powerscourt. One visit is rarely enough. There is so much to see and enjoy in Powerscourt Estate including the gardens, the scrumptious homemade food of the Terrace CafĂŠ, the championship golf, and the highest waterfall in Ireland. In particular our gardens offer many hidden treasures - from a walk through the formal Italian garden, to exploring the pathways and secret grotto in the Japanese garden, to marveling at the range and record-breaking size of our trees. My family have now been custodians of Powerscourt Estate for over 50 years and we are so pleased that you are visiting Powerscourt and thus also becoming part of its rich and extraordinary history. Best wishes

Lord Londonderry was the step father of the 7th Viscount. The Japanese garden was laid out over 100 years ago in 1908 by the 8th Viscount and Viscountess Powerscourt on reclaimed bog land to the south of Triton Lake. The upper circle provides stunning views of the Japanese garden and the Sugar Loaf Mountain in the distance. There is a beautiful concept behind each of these circles: working inwards, we discover our inner selves; working outwards and upwards we gain greater knowledge of the world around us.

The Dolphin Pond The Dolphin Pond was once known as ‘The Green Pond’ and is one of the oldest parts of Powerscourt gardens, even appearing on a 1740 map of the estate as a fish pond. In the summertime, the pond is decorated with lilies and irises which give it a green sheen, hence its old name. The new name is derived from its central fountain which features four dolphins and was brought from Paris by the 7th Viscount in the late 19th century. The Dolphin pond is surrounded by magnificent trees, including a line of Japanese Red Cedars (Cryptomeria japonica) which were planted about 1864 and the tallest Eucalyptus in Ireland. There are many conifers for which the estate is famous, and a row of Giant Wellingtonias (Sequoiadendrongiganteum) from California.

The Pets’ Cemetery The Largest Pets’ Cemetery in Ireland One of the most interesting parts of Powerscourt gardens is the Pets’ Cemetery which is the resting place of the much loved pets of the Wingfield and Slazenger families. It is situated along the Rhododendron Walk and features striking Azaleas, Rhododendrons and Roses in the summer months. The cemetery is believed to be the largest pets’ cemetery in any private Irish garden.
The Much-Loved Pets of Powerscourt The families had a wide variety of pets including children’s ponies ‘Tommy’ and his wife ‘Magic’ as well as ‘Swift’ and ‘Bully.’ Another favourite pet included ‘Eugenie’ the Jersey cow who had 17 calves and produced over 100,000 gallons of milk! The names of the pets such as ‘Mrs Mare’, ‘Little Bots’ and ‘Doodles Chow’ are a joy to read.
