introduction of divisional board

Lieutenant Governor’s Greeting Hey Division 11! As you may know, my name is Kiln Chen and I will be serving as your Lieutenant Governor for the 2019-2020 service year. A little bit about me: I am currently a junior at the High School for Math, Science and Engineering at CCNY. I enjoy playing basketball and I love reading, but not when I'm forced to. One of my goals this service year is to connect all the clubs in our division and promote the core values of Key Club. Another goal of mine this year is to promote and establish strong relationships with other branches of the K-family! I am so excited to work with you all this service year. Together we will have a fun, successful and memorable service year! If you ever have any questions or concerns or maybe you’re bored and you want to talk to someone, feel free to email me at division11@nydkc.org or text/call at (917)-361-3396. Here’s to a great service year! Yours in service, Kiln Chen

Wesley Mui Executive Assistant The Bronx High School for Science Hey Division 11! My name is Wesley Mui, and I am from Bronx Science Key Club. I'm beyond excited to see what this service year can bring, and with m events committee, we will bring lots and lots of divisional events for all of you to attend! In my free time, I like to find new places to eat, and I also like to watch basketball.

Freya Zhu Executive Assistant Stuyvesant High School Hello Key Clubbers! It’s been a little more than a month since the service year started and I can already see all accomplishments that all of you guys have made so far! As one of you Executive Assistants, I will work closely with the divisional board to further connect Division 11 and help everyone accomplish new achievements. Wesley and I will be working closely with the event committee to supply the division with divisional events and fundraisers. These are meant to emphasize the inclusive and connected aspect of Key Club rather than profit. In addition to the divisional events and fundraisers, I will be implementing a new format to the divisional minutes and will be releasing it to the public so that the clubs that were unable to attend the divisionals will be able to stay updated. Our divisional website has been great however, I strive to make it more useful to us as Key Clubbers and increase the website activity. At the root of all these goals is my main, encompassing goal. I hope to revolutionize the divisional board and become someone that every Key Clubber will be able to contact for help with anything. From attending all the club’s events and fundraisers to helping them plan, I hope that every club will be able to grow and prosper.

Yi Lan Zhang Social Media Head The Bronx High School for Science Hello D11, I am so ecstatic to be your SMH (social media head) this service year! At every volunteer event, I would see the hard work, leadership, and passion all the Key Club members have in serving their community. Through the camera lenses, I wish to capture the smile you give as you hand out a brochure, as you rake the leaves, as you donate to charity, as you take the hands of a child, and as you make the world a better place. SNAPS to a BRIGHT service year!

introduction of district board

Camille Brock District Governor Division 20 My name is Camille Brock and I am beyond excited to serve as your 2019-2020 District Governor. I’m currently in my junior year at Candor High School of Division 20. I served as their Lieutenant Governor for the 2018-2019 service year, and that’s what really inspired me to continue my journey into Key Club. Outside of Key Club and school work, you can find me in a few places. I’ll either be in the 6:1:1 classroom lending a helping hand, playing my saxophone or singing in the music rooms, getting coffee with my mom or friends, or watching Netflix and eating hot cheetos. In my term this year, I would like to focus on communication throughout the district and with other branches of the Kiwanis Family. I would like to increase our social media presence, utilize videos for our updates, and reach out to other branches of the Kiwanis Family more than we might’ve in the past. I’m so excited for the rest of this year with all of you and I’m really looking forward to everything we’re going to accomplish. Let’s make this year NYDKC’s year!

Jaron Belmore District Executive Assistant Division 24 Hey Key Clubbers! My name is Jaron Belmore. I am currently a junior from Division 24. I previously served as the Lieutenant Governor of Division 24 and this service year, I will be serving as District Executive Assistant. As District Executive Assistant, I assist the Lieutenant Governors in planning large scale divisional and inter-divisional events such as Fall Rally. I will also be planning the 2020 Leadership Training Conference. I cannot wait to serve you all! Here’s to a great service year!

Qianting Chen Executive Assistant Division 9 I’m your new District Executive Assistant for the internal functions for the service year of 2019 to 2020. I’m from Brooklyn Tech Key Club in Division 9. Last year, I was the divisional secretary of my division. I’ve been in Key Club since freshman year and started taking leadership position as club secretary in my sophomore year. This past few weeks serving as your executive assistant has been exciting and rewarding. As I’m still getting familiar with my job, I can already envision how much we can accomplish together in this service year! This week from May 6th to May 10th was the Eliminate Week, which we have different themes each day to help raise donations toward our Eliminate Project. For example, this past Wednesday was the e-lemon-ate Wednesday. I was challenged by our District Treasurer Anthony Lim to eat a lemon and donate $5 toward the Eliminate Project. This was a very fun experience despite me fearing of the sourness of a lemon in the beginning. It turns out it wasn’t bad tasting at all. I know it may sounds like I’m crazy, but the lemon has a little of sweetness in it. I hope that this experience will hold true to whatever you do in life and Key Club! It may be difficult in the beginning to even think about it, but you will find sweetness at the end. This year as the District Executive Assistant, I hope to bring the district and divisional board closer. This means more transparency and more collaboration. In return, the result will benefit the clubs and the members. I am really excited to start a new service year with amazing people that are on the board this year!! Lastly, I’m looking forward meeting you guys in the events in the future!!

Linna Cheung District Secretary Division 11 Hey guys! My name is Linna Cheung and I am serving as your 2019-20 District Secretary! I am currently a junior in The High School of Math, Science and Engineering @ CCNY. I've been involved in Key Club since freshman year partly because of your great lieutenant Governor. When I'm not doing Key Club stuff, you'll find me either watching Netflix or taking pictures of life. I love to play volleyball even though I'm not athletic. My favorite colors are blue and red. I like school but I'm struggling in calculus so if anyone is great at math, please tutor me. My main goals for this service year is to strengthen the bond within the New York District. In order to do this, I have a challenge for you. Go on social media or email and introduce yourself to a Lieutenant Governor or member you don't know. I love to challenge myself and that has gotten me to be where I am today so I encourage you to do the same. You might even surprise yourself. I'm a pretty quiet person but I really do I want to meet all you guys personally. Feel free to message me if you just wanna chat. People say I'm their personal psychologist.

Anthony Lim District Treasurer Division 11 Hello Division 11! My name is Anthony Lim and I'm your current District Treasurer. Some of you might better know me as the fundraising cohead of Bronx Science Key Club, and yes, you should still attend our fundraisers. I hope to get to know everyone better this service year, whether it's because I'm coming after you for a FRF submission, or because we met at a fundraiser. I love going to events and getting to meet new people, with one of my favorite events being Passport to Taiwan. Outside of Key Club, I play the Bass Clarinet and I'm part of Boy Scouts. I also like buying "hypebeast" clothing, whether it's supreme or Anti Social Social Club. Well, that's all it for now, hope to see you at an event soon!

Angelo Lontok District Bulletin Editor Division 11 Hey Division 11! My name’s Angelo Lontok, and I go to HSMSE. You’ve probably seen me around at divisionals and volunteering events—feel free to say hi! A little bit about me: I’m Filipino, I live in Brooklyn, and I like to paint and play the piano whenever I can. For the 2019-2020 service year, I’ve been appointed as your District Bulletin Editor. This means I’m in charge of grading LTG newsletters (including this one!) and making the district newsletter, The Empire Key.

Ramisa Azad District Webmaster Division 11 My name is Ramisa Azad and I will be serving as your District Webmaster this year. I’m a Junior and have been in Key Club for 2 years as a member of LaGuardia Key Club. As your webmaster, I will be serving to keep our Key Club District connected, up to date, and to spread the word of Key Club through a new NYDKC website. I will make sure to make the website a valuable resource for members, and as a tool to inform the public of the great work New York District Key Club is doing. I will work my best to keep it updated, resourceful, and easy to navigate. This role requires adept technological and designing skills in areas such as website development, digital graphics, and visual media. As your webmaster I am excited to contribute my creativity, vision, and coding and management skills for a service organization that is so influential to all of us. Feel free to reach out to me with questions/concerns and I will be more than happy to hear your ideas regarding potential improvements for the website!

March of Dimes By Ayan Rahman, Brooklyn Technical High School, Division 9

March of Dimes 2019, like every year, proved to be an empowering event to kick off the new service year with a bang. Key Clubs from all across the city came together, despite poor weather conditions, to unite under one cause: supporting healthy mothers and babies. Throughout the long walk, the voices of key clubbers could be heard cheering fervently about how we felt, Stuyvesant’s group of marketing masterminds sold donuts to add a touch of sweetness to our fired up moods, and the photographers documented us in all our glory. We were all brought together as one large city and community of amazing people, and I've never felt so proud to be a part of this organization. Attending this event, obviously, did a lot more for us than allow us to support a cause. It instilled a sense of community and excitement for what's to come. Every year of Key Club is successful, but this one especially makes me feel like we will reach the stars. I loved March of Dimes so incredibly much and I'm so excited for what's to come!

April Divisional Thank you to everyone who attended the April Divisional. At this divisional, we said farewell to the past divisional board and welcomed the new divisional board. Our Events Committee Head, Wesley Mui, announced that his committee members have been chosen and they have been working on finding service events for the division. Our Social Media Head, Yi Lan Zhang, also announced her committee members and has revealed that the committee has several projects lined up for us! Several clubs did some fundraising; Hunter College High School had their annual chocolate sales and Stuyvesant High School had a Chipotle fundraiser! This was the first divisional of this new service year and the first divisional I’ve ever held. I was so nervous but after standing in front of everyone, my nerves calmed down. Thank you to everyone who came! Keep coming out to events, fundraisers and divisionals! I admire all of your dedication, support, passion and love for Key Club!

Baruch College Campus High School’s Ongoing Metal Straw Sale To help save the turtles and to help cut down our plastic usage, we teamed up with Baruch's Lorax Club and Nest+M's Key Club to sell metal straws sets. Approximately 500 million straws are used each day in the US, and we wanted to reduce the amount of plastic waste we produce, as well as to save the turtles that are harmed by the millions of plastic straws polluting our oceans. In the straw set, we included a cute travel bag to make carrying easier, a handy-dandy brush-cleaner, and either a thin metal straw or a boba metal straw, for our iced-coffee drinkers and our bubble tea lovers out there! Our goal in this project was to encourage those around us to think twice before grabbing another using disposable, plastic straw and to consider its effects on the environment. We sold over 100 straws to our teachers, friends and families, and though our actions are small, it's a step towards reducing plastic waste and sustaining the earth. - Tiffany Rong, Baruch College Campus High School Bulletin Editor/Webmaster

71st Annual Leadership Training Conference By Freya Zhu, Divisional Executive Assistant After a long year of volunteering and serving as treasurer, I was finally on the bus with the rest of Stuyvesant Key Club and Nest+M Key Club. It had been a hectic morning with last minute packing, touching up our scrapbook, practicing for the talent show, and running from YAYA’s with bubble teas, onigiris, and gyozas. As we sang karaoke on the bus, my mind started to wander off to LTC. I was a little apprehensive as I was worried it wouldn’t match up to the LTC of the previous year. I was also apprehensive about the awards and most of all, I was dreading to hear the bell of my retirement. These worries got pushed to the back of my head when the familiar hotel building rolled into view. Listening to Mara, April, and Aaron’s welcome, we all became very excited to see what the next three days have in store for us. Walking into the building, I was greeted by high fives and the smiles of Key Clubbers, both familiar and unfamiliar. I was overcome by the feeling of nostalgia when I stepped into my room despite only being there once before. I felt that I was home again. Grabbing the rest of our matching flower crowns, we met up with the rest of our club for dinner where we had our first miracle minutes. Following dinner was the playfair. It was hot but I was able to meet Key Clubbers from all over the state.

71st Annual Leadership Training Conference The next day was filled with anticipation for the full day we had ahead of us. I woke up early and quickly got changed into black clothes and met up with the rest of the “Stuyvesant Light Brigade” as the adults called us. Performing in front of all the adults was scary. Despite a few mistakes, we were really proud of ourselves for going beyond our comfort zone. The rest of the day was fill with interesting workshops and meals where I would be surrounded by my favorite people in the world. Later that day, we had found out that we were the finale of the talent show. We were ecstatic and nervous, but mostly ecstatic. The awards ceremony was filled with many tears of joy as we watched all of our fellow Key Clubbers walk up and get recognized for their service. Division 11 in particular, made me so proud and happy that I was part of it. Shortly after the conclusion, we got changed and attended the governors ball. From dancing to the photo-booth, it was a very enjoyable time. I left early to meet up with my club, we took pictures in onesies, ate snacks, and played games with each other. After some fire noodles, we all turned in for the night. The last day was a blur as it was filled with tears and unwillingness to leave. From meeting the new executive district board and the rest of the old board to the retirement of the old board, it was hard to remain dried eyes. Then came the moment that had dreaded for a full year. Over the past three days however, I realized that even though I will miss serving as treasurer and a fellow Cabbage of Stuyvesant Key Club, I still had a long two years ahead of me filled with plenty of opportunities. I will also be able to provide all the new treasurers with help and guidance that will help them become outstanding! I smiled as the bell rang, signaling my retirement and my installment as Executive Assistant of Division 11’s divisional board.

Leadership Training Conference By Angelo Lontok, District Bulletin Editor

Leadership Training Conference is an annual gathering of Key Clubbers from all over New York District. From attending informative workshops, to being able to meet people running for positions within the Executive Board, to just being able to meet other people, it’s definitely the highlight of the service year. My experience at LTC this year has been different from other Key Clubbers. As campaign manager for District Secretary (Candidate) Linna Cheung, I had the extra responsibilities of taping up posters with her, going up on stage in front of hundreds of other high schoolers to nominate her, and attend caucus speeches with her. Outside of workshops and campaigning, there were a lot of assemblies to sit through. I still had a good time at each one, though! At one assembly, we listened to the founder of Comfort Cases (the 2018-2019 Governor's Project) talk about his life and what had led him to create an organization that helps foster children. At another one, the Keynote Speaker discussed "dance floor theory" and encouraged all of us to be more active within our lives. He described people as neutrals and participants, and participants ranked from one to five (five being the most outgoing). At each assembly, awards were presented to clubs and individual members--it was great to cheer on for my own division!

Leadership Training Conference Each night was a great opportunity to connect with other members. Friday night was Playfair, which was an event full of icebreakers, so we could get to know other people throughout the district. Saturday night was the Governor's Ball. It was a big dance, with an area set up as a photo booth. I still have the pictures with my friends, from both LTCs that I've attended! But even with all the fun I had on Friday and Saturday night, the most memorable part of LTC for me was Sunday morning. The last assembly was aptly called Closing Session, and it was an emotional one for me. From seeing the 2018-2019 District Board officially retire, to seeing the 2019-2020 board take their place, I realized that a great year with Key Club was finally coming to an end. The bus ride back was bittersweet. On one hand, we were all laughing and singing together, but on the other hand, a lot of us just started crying--we didn't want to leave! As we drove back to NYC, I thought of the things I learned at LTC. I thought about what it meant to be a participant, a "five" in life, and how I could do more with my own life. I thought about the theme of LTC, which was "Aloha to Service". As "aloha" can be both used as a hello and a goodbye, I thought of saying goodbye to one great year of service, and hello to an even better one.
