PINCHING YOURSELF.
EDITOR’S LETTER | Jot
WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU HAD A HEART SWELLING, PINCH YOURSELF MOMENT? A simple moment in time where you stopped still, breathed in your surroundings and had to pinch yourself to make sure it was really, REALLY real? Where your heart gets a little caught in the base of your neck and tears prick at your eyes? And you feel that awesome overwhelming feeling of happiness. For me recently, I had a few of those surreal moments during a three week overseas trip to America with my sister and our girls. It was a huge deal to go away, so far away from Australia without the boys in our family.. and it had been months and months of careful and sometimes frustrating and stressful deliberation and decisions and planning.
And suddenly I found myself living out our carefully planned itinerary! I had one surreal moment hanging off the side of a cable car in San Francisco. I had another moment at the Top of The Rock in New York City but my real pinch myself, catch my breath, teary eyed moment came unexpectedly during, of all things, the Disneyland 3pm parade in Anaheim. I hadn’t expected to have a big pinch myself moment in Disneyland at the sight of Mickey and Minnie. But that’s what is funny about those surreal moments -- those catch your breath moments - they sneak up on you. And my Disneyland parade moment had been a culmination of many amazing moments in a country far, far away from our home.. and just that familiar childhood Mickey Mouse song really triggered a wonderful wash of happy feelings. That’s also the wonderful thing about documenting our lives whether that’s through blogging, scrapbooking or pocket pages.. it’s an incredible opportunity to record the big things, the little things and those heart swelling, magic life moments captured in our photos and stories.
And well, we have plenty of inspiration and ideas for you guys in Issue 19 to help you with capturing and recording your life moments too. So grab a cuppa and enjoy our beautiful digital pages. Oh and there is no
need to go looking for those surreal heart swelling, pinch yourself moments as they tend to creep up on you when you least expect it.. and they’re the most magical kind of memories of all.

What good is a selfie if the photo is not printed and the story told? For this single photo layout, the focus was on my girls and a #selfiesunday. This photo of just us has a whole story behind it. And this was my chance to tell it.
Use a black and white photo so as not to compete with the patterned paper .
Mat an 8 1/2 x 11 inch white background on 12x12 patterned paper to create a bit of a dramatic effect
Use adhesive in the very centre back of an embellishment to create a floating effect when it’s adhered to the page.

Chipboard frames are one of my favourite things to use on layouts and it’s always fun to layer them and add little clusters of embellishments too. On this layout I created some messy stitching on the background with my sewing machine before adding the frames to the page to add texture and interest.

I decided to try an idea that was swirling around in my head when I saw the theme for this gallery and that was to create my own frames for my page. I cut kiss-like crosses into my cardstock and folded each triangular segment back and stapled them down to make different size frames. The photos and paper pieces were then added and attached from behind.

Days of our lives
How do you document your day and tell your stories? Do you take daily photos, upload photos to Instagram or post to facebook? What’s a typical day look like for you? In our now regular series for Jot Mag, we showcase a typical day in the lives of our Jot Girls through photos + stories. In this issue we meet Jamie Pate, Yvette Adams, Lauren Hender, and Loredana Bucaria as they share their day with us..

It’s summer in the Northern Hemisphere. And daily life is not routine. Well, not all of it anyway. Lots of room for spontaneity, down time, together time, and even some work time. Being in the moment is the goal of the season.
6.00 am 8.00 am Quiet time. I intentionally wake early to have the house to myself. The morning is routine for me. I study. I read. I write. And I plan.
The house is beginning to wake. These two, the 18 year old and the 6 year old, are up to shenanigans together. That’s all they know.
9.30 am 11.00 am
We may or may not still be in pyjamas. Hanging around together. Talking. Planning the day. I will miss these moments when school is back in session. Jot Magazine 52
Laundry. Always with the laundry. Everyone is responsible for their own. But there always seems to be laundry constantly in the midst.
What did you read, see and do today? 1.00 pm
Afternoon reading time. During the summer I really attempt to grab this little guy and read several times throughout the day. Some days are more successful than others.
2.30 pm
A lovely afternoon at a local cafe with books and music and crafts.
4.00 pm 7.00pm
Ortho appointment. The fourth child in braces. It’s one of those long term exercises of delayed happiness when straight teeth and a beautiful smile always pays off.
Dinner done. Kitchen cleaned. Kids hanging out with friends. Time to continue my balancing act of work and family. This time of year it’s a constant balancing act. Thankful I have so much goodness in my life to balance. Jot Magazine 53

7.00 am 7.30 am It’s time to wake up to start the day and I love to take my camera and shoot a pic of the light that is in my bedroom at that time of the day. Love the silence before the day starts.
While Andrea is drinking his “lattuccio” I have 15 minutes just for me! I am a make up addict and I love to be very ready to start the day with a red lipstick.
5.00 pm
11.00am If I don’t work and I am at home and Andrea is at the kindergarten I am in my scrap room writing blog posts, editing pictures, working working, working - the work I really love! Jot Magazine 54
We come back from work and school and we are at home. Andrea is playing in his room while I try to clean the house and prepare the dinner
What’s a typical day look like for you? 6.00 pm
7.00 pm It’s time to have a bath with all our paw patrols and all the kind of toys that can be in the water! Andrea loves to play in and with the water!
A new recipe to try to have the dinner ready.
9.30pm
8.00/8.30 pm Daddy is back and we love spending time together playing with lego.
I’m trying to work in my scrap room. Usually I have a very long list of to dos but Andrea doesn’t leave me alone. Some stressful moments! Jot Magazine 55

Capturing the little moments throughout the day made me be more mindful of the little things. Looking to capture moments makes you think about them and let’s you ponder on their meaning. I loved this feature and encourage you to have a go!
7.30 am 8.30 am Ballet bun and a coffee to start my day. Two mornings a week the ballet bun has to last the school day and through to dance classes.
The puppy walks the children to the bus stop.
8.45 am 11.30 am The puppy helps me put my makeup on for the day.

Lunch by the water - Chicken salad roll and a chocolate milkshake. Yummy.
Tickle time with my beautiful girl.

Friday is a pretty predictable day for me. My public service job, teaching group fitness at lunchtime, always the same dinner. But it’s a day I look forward to and a good way to kick off the weekend.
7.00 am 7.30 am I start work at 7am and I never tire of this view of the Brindebellas from my workplace. This morning it’s minus 3 degrees Celsius with a frost. This landscape is ever-changing.
I love Bircher muesli for breakfast and I swear it tastes even better out of a pretty jar.
9.00 am 10.00 am A peek at today’s outfit - I love dressing up for work. I’m so glad we don’t have a uniform! Jot Magazine 58

10.30 pm Our regular Friday night consists of chips and nuggets for dinner, ice creams for dessert and family TV shows. It’s a great way to end the week.

I started years ago making blankets and then in 2012 I started making cute little hats for a collectable doll called Blythe after being introduced to them by a lovely friend. Lauren Hender I love scrapbooking my memories incorporating photos and journaling my memories but my other love is art journaling. This is a way for me to get messy and creative with all different mediums. I love it. It allows me to express my mood and take my stress away. I started art journaling about three years again when I was introduced to it at a scrapbooking retreat. Very nervous at first, I quickly fell in love with this creative process and have made many pages since.

Mardi Winen Late in 2016 I began knotting a little macramé project as a test run for a ‘macramé wedding backdrop’... not only did I go on and complete the backdrop in time for my daughter’s wedding....but also fell madly in love with macramé. There has hardly been a day since that I am not tying or thinking about knots, working on new patterns, or mastering new knots. Its like meditation... just repeating an action over and over....while something beautiful slowly evolves.

Felicity Wilson My garden is my other hobby that I truly enjoy. I love nothing more than spending early mornings and late summer evenings pottering with my flowers. Plants are another weakness of mine, so look out bank account when I head to the nursery! I love nothing more bringing in flowers from the garden and allowing the aroma to fill our home - especially roses and snap dragons. Oh I’m spoiled to have such a massive yard, so I can build more and more gardens.

Jenny Fuller These are my Bubble Quilts. They are created by sewing squares of fabric together to form pockets and then filling the pockets with fibrefill. I just love making these - especially for babies. They are the perfect play mat for little ones. The bubbles add an extra sensory experience. You can of course make them in any size.

Anett Gelencsér One fun idea that I’ve wanted to try for years is embroidery hoop wall art. It is such a fun way to create an affordable focal point in a room. I made these to decorate the walls of my daughter’s room. I crocheted and made the embroidery. I also made some paper flowers and used the hoop as a scrapbook layout.

STEP TWO | Apply several strokes of different water colours across your card. STEP THREE |Allow to dry slightly then carefully remove the washi tape to reveal a sharp paint edge. STEP FOUR | Add a stamped sentiment to the top of the rainbow stack.

MY VIEW STEP ONE | Trim watercolour paper to size (3x4) and adhere washi tape approximately half an inch from the top. STEP TWO | Apply watercolour paint in solid strokes from the washi tape upwards. Leave a slight space between the colours while they are wet. STEP THREE | Before the watercolour paint fully dries, blend the colours softly together using clean water. STEP FOUR | Add a stamped scalloped border along the lower edge of the rainbow. Alternatively, add the scalloped border with a black pen. Complete the card by adding any additional stamped images.

Felicity Wilson I love all things bright and colourful! Brings sunshine inside on a cloudy day! When it comes to choosing colours for your filler cards, choose colours that blend well and look nice together mixed. Example, pinks, yellows and oranges.

YOU CAN DO THIS STEP ONE | Cut your watercolour paper to 3x4 inch size. Choose a few water colours that blend well together and add some colour to your card base. STEP TWO | Using an old plastic credit card, scrape your paint onto the card in a random way to build up your background. STEP THREE | Finish by adding a sentiment and machine stitch around the edge of your card to frame your design.

SHINE ON STEP ONE |Cut your cardstock to 3x4 inch in size. Choose some coordinating patterned paper scraps and cut six strips of paper. Using scissors, hand cut a scalloped edge along each paper strip. STEP TWO | Layer them onto your card as shown and adhere in place. STEP THREE | Add in your title and some embellishments. I have swirled on some cotton thread and a few enamel triangle embellishments. Finish by again machine stitching a border to frame your card.

SPEECH BUBBLES We all have so many of these adorable little labels in our stash... and to stack them all up as a feature gives them a chance to shine centre stage.
I made all these cards with the same steps. Grab a selection of labels and using the rainbow colour guide stack them along the edge overlapping each other and the edge for interest. Add some machine stitching to a few of them. Card three has a stamp added as well.

HOME. WHERE I’M PLANTED. I don’t have a rainbow die, so I cut a series of oval shapes instead. Adhering them to the edge of my card makes them appear to be the perfect rainbow shape. And the best thing is - the other half I cut off I can use to make a second card!

CREATURE OF HABIT What else goes with rainbows but rain clouds? I stamped and cut out my clouds before using a variety of sequins in matching colours to my rainbow to represent the raindrops.

I’m not usually one to include a lot of red in my projects, and at first I was quite wary about using this kit (Studio Calico ‘Confident’ Documenter Kit), but it matched my photos perfectly, and in the end I was really happy with how it turned out. Sometimes it pays to go outside your comfort zone and try something new!

DIARY. I’VE DONE IT AGAIN!!! CAN YOU BELIEVE IT?? I’VE LET ANOTHER CHILD OF MINE GET TO THE END OF THEIR HIGH SCHOOLING WITHOUT HAVING THE SLIGHTEST CLUE OF WHERE THE TIME HAS GONE. NOW, IT’S SCOTT AND I’M FEELING THESE GREY HAIRS. In the blink of an eye I’ve gone from telling him to tie his laces, to asking him to tie back his hair as my groovy, long-haired, muso man-son has less than a month of high school left. It is a pretty exciting time for him though. He’s won some awards for his musicianship, auditioned for a uni music program and been accepted for 2018 all while keeping up with his other school work and an increasingly hectic social life. Now he’s 18 and responsible for driving himself around, keeping track of him is no longer so simple. But I think I’ve found my secret weapon! As the financier of his iPhone and subsequent 24 month contract he is clever enough to realise the moral obligation of answering my calls and messages. Genius don’t you think! Liam, now nearing the end of his 3rd year of university and the 2nd in his current course of study has decided to slow the pace a little. I think the student ID and discount card is very much to his liking and so the newest plan is to stretch the process out – he’ll work a day job, study part time and embark on epic computer game battles through the night. He and
three others have recently moved into a share house and luckily for him I’ve not disclosed my own tales of living away from home while at university. I doubt it’d be in his best interests to know the shenanigans that I got up to back then, but Diary – you do know and so I am relying on you to keep my secrets safe!
At almost eight, Gina is growing into her own character more and more each day. Totally unable to stand still or walk sensibly, she’s taken to cart wheeling her way through the house and touch wood, we’ve not had any damage done so far. When her legs aren’t up and over or spinning in the air, it’s all about the dance moves. Very much the dance moves and some tween American YouTube sensations who prank one another with slime.
Apparently, I’m meant to be equally enthralled by these YouTube shows and if I dare look away for a minute there’s hell to pay. Literally hell. She’s got world class eye rolling skills, a set of crossed arms that leave nothing unspoken and a death stare that has me looking for cover. I’ve already figured my toolbox of parenting techniques is going to need topping up for when this one hits puberty. Luckily she’s equally gorgeous, smiley, kind and sweet so we’ve decided to keep her. For now.
Won’t be long Diary until 2018 is upon us and so I’d best be starting to think of some plans and goals for then. Unless you can slow the world down for me…. I really do like the idea of that, so if you would... Till soon..
