EDITOR’S LETTER | Jot

JUST DO IT. WHAT DO YOU WANT TO DO WHEN YOU GROW UP? Jot writer Shari Brewer’s seven year old daughter Grace wants to be a vet, a hairdresser, a teacher, a doctor and a grocery store operator. All at the one time! She also wants to set aside some vocal training time as she intends to try out for TV show The Voice - however if Boy George or Seal turn their chairs, sadly, she’s announced she won’t progress to round 2 as she only wants to be on Delta’s team. (Page 187) The simple joy of being seven years old - with that whole wide world ahead of you. No boundaries or self set limitations. What a feeling that is! Where dreams are abundant. That feeling of freedom to be whatever you want to be .. to do whatever you want to do. No one to tell you that you can’t!

For me, I realised, I’M the one telling me that I can’t! I’m the one holding myself back. I’m the one telling myself I can’t do this and I can’t do that! And I’ve made a conscious effort to quit giving myself boundaries and to just get on with it! Recently, I came across a book gifted to me by Tamar Bostock, a lovely friend who used to work for me here at Jot (and on my first magazine Etzcetera).. it was a book called She by Kobi Yamada and contains a series of affirmations and this one in particular jumped out at me.. “She woke up one day and threw away all her excuses.” I have long had an idea brewing in my head for an ebook project - something I’m incredibly passionate about and I realised I was spending way too much time telling myself all the reasons NOT to do it, instead of jumping in with both feet and making a start. So, prompted by that quote, I jumped.

is falling together beautifully and I am having a ball putting it all together with a few of my Jot Girls. The ebook is not quite ready for public sharing just yet but it will be very soon and you can stay in the loop by joining our Jot Mag Newsletter list here so you’re first in the know when everything is ready to be released!

So, here’s to living like seven year old Grace. Living fully. Setting goals. Not limiting ourselves by our own thoughts. Go out and be awesome. Do you have a goal in mind you have been talking yourself out of doing? Maybe learning a new craft? Joining a sporting team? Writing a book? Submitting your work to a magazine maybe submitting to Jot? Starting a blog? Throw away those excuses. Make a start - that starting bit is often the hardest part… and just do it.

Oh but first.. grab a cuppa and enjoy Issue 18 of Jot - because it’s fabulous and it’s been designed especially for you!

And I then wondered why I had waited so long as the project

QUICK & EASY By Kim Jeffress

In January this year my family returned to Disneyland after four years. It was like a dream come true! I wanted to emphasis the fairytale aspect of our trip so I used a castle cut file and backed it with patterned paper for a fun effect.

Layer your cut file with pop dots to create dimension and shadows. I’ve used a large castle cut file to form my background.

Use a stapler to attach clear embellishments.

Don’t be afraid to cut up patterned paper and rearrange parts of the pattern to fit behind your cut file.

SUPPLIES |American Crafts cardstock, Crate Paper patterned paper, Heidi Swapp Glitter word, clear word, colorshine, Minc foil applicator, Minc foil flags, stickers.

Jot Magazine 10

Add splashes of ink/colour mist to add some colour to your background and to complete your layout.

Add a large title across the centre of your layout for a big impact.

Layer embellishments and titles over a distraction in your photos. Example: the bow and title hide a photo bomber in my photo!

YOUR CHALLENGE:

Kim’s challenge is to play on the theme of your layout and create a mega sized cut file featured like she has done here with her Disneyland inspired cut file castle. Share your work here on our Facebook Page> Jot Magazine 11

Jot Magazine 18

We love:

..how Felicity has made this cute interactive card for her daughter’s birthday.. complete with a sequin filled shaker page!

HELLO

Felicity Wilson - The Jot Team When I was thinking about the word ‘hello’, I started taking notice of when I say it. I knew I didn’t just use the word as a form of greeting. And I found myself saying the word quite often when the kids called out to me.. I would find myself saying, when the kids are playing dress ups. “Hello Pirate”. I was surprised at often I use that word away from the general greeting for hello. This then inspired me to create a very cute interactive card for my daughter’s second birthday. I wanted the card to reflect her age and the things she does. Dollys and sparkles!

What perfect theme to create a ‘hello’ style layout than a layout of my little man when he was a new born. Lots of collections now contain cut apart sheets where you can use a lot of the elements to create titles or embellishments. Here I have created a mixed title by using a cut apart 3x4” card and a sticker to form the title ‘hello perfect day’.

Kim Jeffress - The Jot Team My boys experienced snow for the first time in January when we were visiting Arizona! It was the perfect choice for my HELLO layout! Days of our lives

How do you document your day and tell your stories? Do you take daily photos, upload photos to Instagram or post to facebook? What’s a typical day look like for you? In our now regular series for Jot Mag, we showcase a typical day in the lives of our Jot Girls through photos + stories. In this issue we meet Kim Jeffress, Felicity Wilson, Raquel Bowman, Mardi Winen and Anna Allan as they share their day with us..

Jot Magazine 55

Felicity Wilson

Our days in the school holidays can be very different. They vary from days at home helping out on the farm to trips to town for shopping. A lot of the school holidays is unplanned, out of routine and go with the flow. Capturing one of our days in the holidays was a lovely way to memory keep and freeze those moments. FRIDAY 10 FEBRUARY 2017

6.30 am 8.17 am There are no sleep - ins for us. However it does mean that we can ‘slow’ down and enjoy breakfast together because we don’t have to rush for the school bus.

A walk around the garden to collect our fresh produce for the day. Plenty of pumpkin soup and pumpkin scones to be had with this monster pumpkin.

8.36 am

10.30 am Morning watering of the flower garden with new annuals and perennials planted after some good rain from cyclone Debbie. A few flowers made it inside for the kitchen table. . Jot Magazine 56

Morning tea. This mother always looks forward to a hot coffee.

What did you eat, see, do today? 2.13 pm

1.46 pm Lego creating whilst the littlest one sleeps.

A little documenting in my Memory Planner.

3.36 pm 7.30 pm

Ice block and refuelling break whilst doing some jobs around the farm.

Winding down with some reading before nodding off to la-la land. Jot Magazine 57

Raquel Bowman

Mondays are a signal for a new week and back to routine in the Bowman household. After the weekend, it is always a welcome relief. I have never documented our day in such a way and I must say I think I am converted. What an amazing snapshot of a regular day which I am now keen to do again.

8.12 am 11.37 am

Mondays are a no kinder day which means we can have a little sleep in and this mumma can sit and enjoy a cup of coffee while the kiddies eat there breakfast and watch TV.

On the road, a quick drop off for the little Mr to nanny’s while mummy and Charlotte head on an exciting outing.

11.56 am 1.18 pm Next year is a big year for this little Miss; the start of primary school. Clinging to my leg about the unknown whilst waiting for her first school tour. Jot Magazine 58

Some mummy and daughter time over lunch and a bite to eat.

What’s a typical day look like for you? 2.03 pm

4.59 pm A good cafe is one that has a play park right!?!

11.29 pm

It was a wet and scary drive to the airport to pick up hubby.

Nothing like a bit of creative play snuck into a day. This doesn’t happen often in the day time but when it does it is bliss.

1.05 am

Late night here, or should I say morning? Home and time to retire after picking hubby up from the airport. Jot Magazine 59

Anna Allan

I’m documenting a day in my life during school holidays. So, obviously the kids are home and the rhythm of our days is quite different to the usual when school is in session. And to top it off, I’m documenting a ‘town day’ with kids in tow. Wish me luck! *lol* I SET MY TIMER ON THE CAMERA+ APP I USE TO TAKE PRETTY MUCH ALL MY PHOTOS ON MY PHONE. I PROPPED THE PHONE UP AGAINST A WINE GLASS I HAD SITTING ON THE BENCH - COUNTDOWN AND SNAP!

9.00 am 10.00 am School holidays give the opportunity for sleep-ins..which is a major perk for me as I’m not really good with mornings. Ugh!

I alternate between a few of my favourite brekkie dishes from morning to morning but today, I’m having banana and strawberry toasted wraps with maple syrup, Greek yoghurt, macadamias, and a sprinkling of choc-coated goji berries! YUMMO!

1.30 pm 3.00 pm Being school holidays, things are a little more on the GO SLOW. We finally head to town. It’s 105 km to town so the kids watch a movie in the back and I pop on some tunes in the front for the trip. Jot Magazine 60

I decided I want to repaint the interior of my house in vivid white. Called into Bunnings for colour samples. Who knew that there was so many white paint options! I just love looking at all the variations of colours lined up all pretty and eye catching!

Where did you go today? “MUMMY, TRY AND RUN OVER ME...BETCHA CAN’T GET ME!!”

5.00 pm

After a few other jobs around town, it’s time to do the grocery shopping. It took a little longer than usual as I also had the added role of referee for two young ladies running amok through every aisle we went down.

After dealing with all the ‘can-we-gets’ and issuing apologies to shoppers who experienced the forces of two revved up human hurricanes, the checkout process could begin and we could get outta there!!

6.15 pm

8.40 pm I enjoy a chicken caesar burger and the two bat girls enjoy their usual nuggets and chips Happy Meal.

We arrive home after a pizza pickup for hubby, a re-fuel and the hour long drive home, to get stuck into bed time routine. And then I have the honour of unloading the car and packing away groceries. Jot Magazine 61

Mardi Winen

It was so tricky working out which day to share... A day Off? A day Shift? Or a night shift? In the end... I chose a day in between night shifts during the school holidays.

7.30 am 8.30 am I arrive home from Work...Its been a 14 hour night shift.

I am on the last lap of my morning walk and looking forward to coffee and breakfast. No kangaroos this morning although I see them more often than not.

9.30 am 10.00 am Checking my garden and wondering if I picked these pumpkins too soon?...It said when they sounded hollow...its tricky to tell. Jot Magazine 62

Off to the movies with the kids - we watched ‘Boss Baby’ and I didn’t even fall asleep.

How did you spend your day?

WAYS TO ADD

J O U R N A L I N G Telling our stories - it’s what we love most here at Jot Mag. But what are your favourite techniques to get your stories onto your pages? We asked the Jot Girls to share some of their favourite journaling ways take a look!

Jot Magazine 68

OH HEY! WHAT’S UP

Leanne Allinson - The Jot Team For this layout I have created a pocket and journaling tab system to include several layers of journaling notes. This page records my youngest son’s current favourite things and as his world expands, so too, does his list of what he loves best.

1

Hide it!

HIDDEN JOURNALING IS A GREAT WAY TO INCLUDE EXTRA TEXT - FOR WHEN YOU HAVE A BIG STORY TO TELL!

Jot Magazine 69

Quick steps LEANNE SHOWS US HOW TO MAKE A QUICK POCKET FOR EXTRA JOURNALING CARDS FOR YOUR LAYOUT.

STEP BY STEP

Leanne Allinson - The Jot Team A pocket on your layout is a great way to help you add more journaling to your page. Let’s see how Leanne has put this together.

Jot Magazine 70

SUPPLIES: Cardstock: Bazzill; Patterned Paper: Bella BLVD; Alphabets: Bella BLVD; Embellishments: Bella BLVD stickers, Tabbies, die cuts, enamel hearts. Other: type writer, machine stitching.

Create a pocket big enough to hold your tags and machine stitch the bottom edge to keep it all secure.

STEP ONE | Use Project Life or 3”x 4” sized cards for journaling and add tabs to the top of each. Layer your journaling cards on top of each other to help with placement of the pull tabs. STEP TWO | Once you are happy with your journaling card placement, create a cardstock pocket for them to slip into. My group of journaling cards measures 4” wide. Fold the cardstock and machine stitch the lower edge of the pocket together. STEP THREE | Adhere your cardstock pocket into place on your page. Add your journaling cards to the pocket and use foam tape to help balance the photo cluster for depth. STEP FOUR | Finally use the pocket depth to insert more layers and embellishments between the photo cluster and pocket.

“Because I print my photos at home this is the quickest and easiest way for me to get the journaling done, short of handwriting which I don’t love.”

POCKET PAGES

Petra Corcoran - The Jot Team

I do quite a lot of journaling on my Project life layouts and whether it is on my cards or directly on the photos I use my computer to do almost all of it. This page is a typical layout and has four lots of journaling included in the one 12x12 page. I am also a creature of habit and tend to stick to a font called Remington Noiseless. It’s a typewriter like font and I really love it. I type the stories and notes up as a layer in Photoshop elements and then print out with the photo if I’m journaling directly onto the photo or I pop a Project Life card (either 3x4 or 6x4) straight into my Epson Picturemate printer. I have worked out over many years of doing this that it is really easy to get the alignment right on the Project Life cards by following these steps. 1. Create a 3x4 or 6x4 canvas in Photoshop depending on what size cards you are using. 2. Drag ruler marks across from the side to top to mark out any areas of design on the cards you don’t want your journaling to print on (hint they are usually 1/2 or 1 inch away from the edge of the card.

2

Print it!

3. Add a type layer inside your marked out sections. 4. Select font size depending on how much you want to say (I usually use between 9 and 12 point font) 5. Type up your story and print onto your card.

YOU 2..

Sharmaine Kruijver - The Jot Team I love using my typewriter for journaling and usually add strips to my layouts. For this page I decided to use a whole piece of paper, torn from a spiral bound journal.

Speech bubbles: Speech bubbles plus hand journaling create an eye catching title for this page.

“...I JUST WROTE AND WROTE AND WROTE EVERYTHING I WANTED TO SAY..”

Jot Magazine 76

WORD Natalie Elphinstone - The Jot Team

To add the journaling to my page I first traced around some large letters to spell ‘word’ in pencil. Then I just wrote and wrote and wrote everything I wanted to say - filling in all the gaps around the letters, even when it meant stopping a word half way through! When I finished, I erased the pencil so I was left with this outline of a title running through all my handwriting.

When it comes to journaling on my layouts, my go-to is usually handwriting BUT every now and then I like to pull out the stamps to change things up a little. This time I’ve used stamps from various sets and created my journaling with an assortment of fonts and varied sizes. I also used a combination of coloured inks to stamp my words which resulted in an interesting display and a focal point in itself for this layout.

Hand write it!

WHEN YOU HAVE EXCEPTIONALLY BEAUTIFUL HANDWRITING LIKE JAMIE’S WHY WOULDN’T YOU ADD IT TO YOUR WORK! IT JUST LOOKS FABULOUS!

SUMMER LOVIN’ Jamie Pate - The Jot Team

Journaling! My favorite. I find it easiest to jot down the story using my own hand. Sometimes I will utilize an electronic source. Using my own handwriting, for me, adds a bit of an organic feel to the page. A throw back to traditional scrapbooks, when our grandmother’s beautiful handwriting would be found on the back of all the photos. No matter which way a person chooses to write their story on their pages, write it down no matter. That’s what matters most.

SUPPLIES| Bella Blvd Jot Magazine 85

AWESOME KID

Sheree Forcier - The Jot Team My favourite way to add journaling to a page is by printing it from my computer and cutting it into strips. I love that it adds another design element to the page and there are so many fonts to choose from. I tend to use the ‘Traveling_Typewriter’ font the most.

9

No Journaling!

NOT ALL LAYOUTS HAVE TO HAVE JOURNALING - SOMETIMES YOUR PHOTO AND A FEW LITTLE WORD STRIPS IS ENOUGH.

“..Choose a photo, title and ephemera that help tell your story. All you may then need to add is a date stamp.” Jot Magazine 90

JOY

Felicity Wilson - The Jot Team

When you think of documenting memories, we think journaling. However, there are times when we have a photo, the ephemera and title and feel stuck where to write journaling or simply even what to write. Ever thought why that is? Perhaps it is because the photo and the layout you have created says everything you need to say. There is nothing more to add, maybe if you add the journaling you feel like you are repeating yourself. SUPPLIES: Crate Paper. Citrus Twist, Pink Fresh Studio, Shimmerz paints, Hip Kit Club

YOU’VE GOT MAIL

THE LOW DOWN ON POCKET LETTERS A fun way to not only use up your paper crafting supplies but to also get creative, Pocket Letters allow you to share with other crafty friends by exchanging pockets filled with all sorts of bits and pieces. Think of pocket letters as a modern twist on traditional pen pal letter writing. Paper crafter Belinda Spencer has been exchanging pocket letters with Jot Girl Felicity Wilson recently and she shares her pocket letter story with us. Plus we showcase some gorgeous Pocket Letters from both our Jot Girls and our talented readers in our gallery.

Jot Magazine 93

Jot Magazine 94

“Pocket letters are a super fun and creative take on the pen pal tradition.”

POCKET LETTERS

BELINDA SPENCER

WHAT’S YOUR TAKE ON POCKET LETTERS? Pocket letters are a super fun and creative take on the pen pal tradition. They provide the opportunity to create something cute, use up your leftover bits and pieces as well as put a smile on the face of the recipient when they receive a lovely surprise in their mail box. HOW LONG HAVE YOU AND FELICITY BEEN EXCHANGING POCKET LETTERS? Felicity and I only started swapping pocket letters by chance in March 2017. I have been a long time fan of Felicity’s beautiful work so I leapt at the chance to swap

with her. I had already created pocket letters for swaps in the past but had never received anything in return so I was super excited to swap with Felicity. HOW OFTEN DO YOU SWAP POCKET LETTERS? I haven’t swapped pocket letters on a regular basis…as yet! I do create them once a quarter for a pocket letter workshop that I teach at my local scrapbook store. I do hope to swap more often though if time permits.

Jot Magazine 95

POCKET LETTER BY FELICITY WILSON

“I have received two pocket letters from Felicity and they are both equally beautiful. Felicity creates amazingly layered work with lots of texture that I love so much. If I have to choose a favourite though, it’s this one that came with a coffee bag attached!” ~ Belinda Jot Magazine 96

BELINDA SPENCER

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITE THINGS TO FILL YOUR POCKETS WITH?

DO YOU JUST USE A DIVIDED PAGE PROTECTOR AS YOUR BASE?

Filling the pockets with goodies is my absolute favourite part of creating pocket letters. I love to create a treasure hunt for the recipient with hidden treats to find.

I use a trading card pocket page to create my pocket letters. These are readily available from newsagents and scrapbook stores. They are perfect as they are divided into nine sections measuring 2 ½ “ x 3 ½ “.

Items that work best are ones that are not too bulky - cute paper clips, die cuts, stickers, tea or coffee bags, washi tape (wrapped around tags), little wood veneer pieces, sequins and buttons. It’s pretty much whatever you can fit in there!

IS THIS THE FIRST TIME YOU HAVE BEEN INVOLVED IN EXCHANGING POCKET LETTERS? I have created pocket letters for two previous exchanges so I am still finding my feet. It is fun coming up with different ways to include treats and making the pockets interactive. Jot Magazine 97

Check out Facebook/Google/internet for swap groups or swap with your own group of lovely creative friends. Jot Magazine 98

BELINDA SPENCER

WHAT’S THE BEST THING ABOUT POCKET LETTER EXCHANGES? The best thing about pocket letter exchanges is knowing that you have created something that is potentially going to brighten the day of the person who receives it. Then, of course, there is the excitement of waiting for your own pocket letter to arrive in the mail.

I think it would be fun to create some to send out just as a random act of kindness without the expectation of receiving anything in return.

DON’T BE AFRAID TO ADD LAYERS TO YOUR POCKET CARDS | While you can’t go overboard with bulky layers, it is surprising how much you can fit in each pocket. You can always attach things to the back of your pockets if they don’t fit in the pocket.

TRY TO CREATE A BEAUTIFULLY CO-ORDINATED LOOK TO YOUR POCKET LETTER BY USING THE ONE COLLECTION OF PAPER AND EMBELLISHMENTS|This saves time in trying to match random products. Patterned paper pads are perfect for this.

MAKE SURE YOU TUCK IN A LOVELY HAND WRITTEN NOTE FOR A PERSONAL TOUCH. Jot Magazine 99

NATALIE’S CUTE AND COLOURFUL SEQUIN SHAKER POCKET.

POCKET LETTERS

“FOR ME, THE FUN WAS IN THE CREATION AND THE CHANCE TO PLAY WITH SOME NEW AND OLDER PRODUCT IN EXCITING WAYS.”

NATALIE ELPHINSTONE The Jot Team To be honest I’m not entirely sure what the formal concept of the pocket letter is, but in my mind the idea is that I would fill each of the pockets with a card or embellishment that can be pulled out and used separately in different projects. And of course, it’s all about sharing.

So I fully intend on giving this away to someone else so they can benefit from some ready-made coordinated cards.

LAUREN HENDER The Jot Team

Pocket letters are used for all sorts of things. Some send them as little creative gifts, others just store their left over little scrappy pieces, but I love to make cute little clusters to use in my travellers notebooks.

I knew that all those left over gorgeous bits and pieces I have from my layouts would just get lost if didn’t do something with them.

This way when I’m heading out and want to take my travellers notebook with me or just want to do something quickly at home I can simply use my pocket letters to quickly whip up a layout.

FAVOURITE TIME OF DAY Anna Allan - The Jot Team

At first, I struggled with what exactly IS my favourite time of day. I enjoy many parts of my days - breakfast time (especially on school days when I get to eat it with NO interruptions or noise!) mail time (cos there could be something exciting there!), bedtime (that feeling of sinking your head into that pillow and sighing as your body relaxes into sleep)...but I decided to document a very simple snippet of time in every day that you can miss so easily as it comes and goes so quickly. But when you do become part of that moment in time, it’s just such a beautiful thing.. with the sun shining in on you and that feeling of calm as the day transitions into night. Absolutely magnificent.

FELICITY WILSON

Felicity Wilson Creating filler cards with the words ‘hello’ was lots of fun. There are endless possibilities which makes these cards easily adaptable for any themed pocket page spread.

Jot Magazine 153

To make my set of cards, I first created some water colour misted backgrounds on my 3x4” cards. HELLO MY DARLING - CARD 1 STEP ONE | Once your mixed media background is dry, start layering on various embellishments. I’ve used die-cuts and stickers. STEP TWO | Add in your “Hello” sentiment stickers. STEP THREE | Add a little washi tape to the top and if needed back your card on some cardstock for added durability. Jot Magazine 154

HELLO. HELLO. HELLO THERE - CARD 2 STEP ONE |Once your background is dry, gather your hello sentiments and any embellishments you want to include. STEP TWO | Adhere your sentiments with your chosen adhesive or use staples to secure them in place if you prefer. STEP THREE | Once you are happy with your cluster of embellishments, wrap some twine or thread around your card several times for added texture. HELLO, MY LOVE - CARD 3 Once your background is dry, start layering and placing your elements. Staple elements if preferred. Finish by adding in some gold foil heart embellishments.

Leanne Allinson The Jot Team - Australia

Project Life is fast becoming a place to collect my favourite photos and jot down our significant memories before I forget what occurred during that particular week. I wish I could say I am completely up to date with this project but I am far from that goal as the weeks stretch out before me.

Jot Magazine 166

For this spread I have added bullet points to help with the journaling. They have been typed onto a grid style patterned paper and then added directly to my filler cards. In my photos I’ve tried to capture both our everyday as well as current trends. School holidays plus Easter dominated our Week 15.

I’m sooo far behind on my Project Life, and in fact have only just started on my 2017 album! But I’m determined to catch up, and I find that using my Studio Calico kits really helps me pull together the spreads quickly.

I always like to add lots of journaling because for me that’s what it’s really about - capturing the stories - so I always make sure to leave plenty of space for writing.

Petra Corcoran The Jot Team - Brisbane, Australia

This is my Week 12 Project Life layout. I am still using the Becky Higgins Project 52 Fresh Edition. Sometimes I love to just grab a sheet of alphas and use them as much as possible on a weekly layout.

I stick to the same colour alphabets off the sheet and try to find words or accents I can add to compliment the Project Life cards from the kit. This time I decided on these small light blue alphas but you can use whatever colour, size and type that takes your fancy.

Jot Magazine 174

Don’t forget to use the punctuation and characters on the alpha set. In this layout I used the asterisks and hash tags just as an example of using these.

For my pocket page I wanted to add a lot of colour however I toned the page down with some white pocket cards which allowed for a more balanced and less overwhelming feel.

Machine stitching is a subtle way to add texture that doesn’t add too much dimension to the pockets.

BY SHARI BREWER

TIMES A FLYIN’ AND SHARI’S KIDS ARE GROWING UP. FAST!

DIARY. OH. EM. GEE. I CANNOT BELIEVE HOW QUICKLY TIME IS PASSING – INDEED, LIKE EVERYBODY ELSE I’M SURE. BUT since when did I become the mother of a 20 year old? That’s right, big boy Liam has now turned 20 and I think that means I’m considered middle-aged. Bloody hell! You know, Diary, I assumed Liam turning 18 would be a shock. Before this happened, just the thought I’d ever have a child of legal drinking age was beyond my comprehension. It. Is. Not. Possible. But here we are further down the track of time and now he is no longer even a teen. So proud of the lovely young man he is, but at the same time horrified by the time warp that has become my life! I have to stop and pinch myself to prove its reality! Jot Magazine 186

I know the time-whizzing phenomenon is speeding up and we are all getting older (and my desire to keep denying the approaching nudge that is 50 is failing) because not only do I own a child in his 20’s, son number 2, Scott, shall be 18 in a matter of months!

Why then Diary, do I feel like a 14 year old some days? Is it because that’s when I started sharing life with you? And here we are, after all this time and so many thoughts, words and dreams? At least Scott is asking not to have an 18th party and for that I am so relieved! I’m much happier slipping him the couple of hundred bucks he’d rather put towards an overseas adventure at the end of the school year. I should really be thankful for him and the young man he’s become too as he’s determined to follow his heart towards a career in music. He’s a good lad with solid plans and all the hints and feedback indicate he’ll be studying at The Conservatorium of Music next year. Proud mum moments ahead!

Seven year old Gina, on the other hand, being so much younger, changes her mind daily about what she’d like to pursue in the future. But at this stage she’s decided adamantly that she intends being a vet, a hairdresser, a teacher, a doctor and a grocery store checkout operator. All simultaneously and slotted into the most complex shift roster you’ve ever seen. Seven days per week of course, because who needs sleep? (Trick question: ME, that’s who?)

Additionally, because Gina could never stand for things being simple, time needs to be scheduled for fidgetspinner spinning tricks and vocal training in preparation for her intended audition on The Voice.

And yes, it’s already been decided – by her – that if only Seal or Boy George were to turn their chair she wouldn’t progress into the next round as only being on Team Delta will do. I often remind her that a priority is to keep participating in the school choir with a special focus on not crying during songs that she feels are sad. Like “Bound for Botany Bay” because those poor convicts won’t return to Old England and that’s enough to make anyone sob. Give us all strength… and earplugs.

Because that thing called time doesn’t look like slowing down, it’s probably fitting I say bye for now and get on with my forever growing list of things to do. Once again, Diary, thanks for being here and listening.
