IMPERFECT ARE YOU A PERFECTIONIST? WE CAN ALL AT SOME TIME OR OTHER TEND TO WAIT FOR THE PERFECT SITUATION, PERFECT SET OF CIRCUMSTANCES, PERFECT TIMING BEFORE TAKING ACTION. I’M GUILTY OF OVER THINKING THINGS AND TRYING TO MAKE SURE EVERYTHING IS ABSOLUTELY PERFECT BEFORE RELEASING A NEW PRODUCT OR PUBLISHING AN EDITION OF JOT OR STARTING A NEW PROJECT. However, it’s far better to take SOME action even if things aren’t perfectly perfect than to not take any action at all. IMPERFECT ACTION IS BETTER THAN NO ACTION AT ALL. And when it comes to creating, sometimes we wait for the perfect time to create or the perfect photo, perfect papers/supplies or we feel our work isn’t on trend enough or good enough so we don’t create anything. But our lives aren’t perfect. Our family’s aren’t perfect. We aren’t perfect. It’s time to put all our insecurities and perfection expectations aside and just get on with it.

DOES SHE DO IT?

START BY TRIMMING A SMALL STRIP OF PATTERNED PAPER THE SAME WIDTH AS YOUR 3X4 POCKET PAGE CARD.
Trim a similar width of crepe paper from the roll, to match the width of the patterned paper. Add a small piece of adhesive to one edge of the patterned paper to secure the crepe paper before it is fed through the sewing machine. Using a simple straight line stitch, feed the gathered crepe paper into folds as the patterned paper glides under the sewing machine foot. STAMP “DAYS OF THE WEEK” PHRASES DOWN THE LENGTH OF THE POCKET PAGE FILLER CARD/CARDSTOCK.
Layer the crepe paper ruffle with twine and a pennant sticker flag mounted on foam tape. Complete the filler card with more coordinating patterned paper trimmed into a banner shape. Layer it with a die cut star and staple them both to the top of the card.

Tissue paper. When I think of tissue paper, I think of all things decorative and pretty. It’s delicate yet so very versatile and comes in a wide array of colours and patterns.
I especially like to use tissue paper to back my photos for layouts (it adds a softer, gentle layer) and also in making my own embellishments (butterfly wings, flowers etc) and textural mixed media backgrounds.

FIRST STOP PINTEREST But don’t overdo it. Scrolling endlessly and mindlessly zaps your creative energy. Looking at too many images just causes overwhelm. Instead, visit one of your own boards and look through the last few projects you pinned. What grabs your attention? Maybe it’s just one little thing that jumps out at you. Is there a theme happening? A colour scheme you’re drawn to or a particular technique you’re keen to try? Use those ideas as a springboard and start creating.

PULL TOGETHER YOUR OWN KIT Sort through your supplies and choose a few favourite papers, embellishments and bits and pieces to make your own kit. By creating your own kit to work with, you are limiting your choices which helps to eliminate some of the overwhelm. Don’t spend too long making a decision on your kit contents choose pieces that coordinate and limit it to only a few choices. TIP | Consider making up a few kits in advance ready to go when you do have a block of time for creative play.

SCRAP LIFT YOURSELF
We all have our favourite layouts and papery projects we have created! Go through your albums, pick a few layouts that you absolutely love. Use them as a guide for a few new layouts. You don’t need to invent the wheel every time you make a layout. Use what has worked in the past for you and base your layout on that - changing colours, embellishments and photos but using the basic design can mean you have a fresh, new looking layout in a short space of time as all the thinking has already been done. By you!

REACH FOR THAT SUBSCRIPTION KIT Dive into that scrapbook kit you have been hoarding and use it! No matter what kit it is, chances are it’s been put together beautifully with coordinated papers, cardstock and embellishments.

TRY OUT A SKETCH Sketches are awesome for taking the thinking out of creating a layout. Google scrapbook sketches or make your own. A sketch helps you with photo, title and journaling placement and means you don’t have to think too much just make a few decisions and you are on your way.

YOUTUBE VIDEOS Head to your favourite creative Youtube channels and watch a few process videos to get your creativity flowing. Watching how others pull a layout together is inspiring and motivating!

KIM JEFFRESS “My go to technique when ever I am stumped for a design is to trim two pieces of patterned paper, usually one large pattern and one with a smaller pattern and to adhere them side by side to create my background. I then usually adhere my photo next to the dividing line and I can add my embellishments and journaling around the photo.�

NATALIE ELPHINSTONE “When I’m stuck for ideas on how to design a layout my default position is to simply print out a photo as large as I can, often including the journaling directly into an area of white space before I print. I leave just enough room on my page to add a title and some embellishment clusters. I create a strip across the layout with three blocks of paper. 3x4 inch journal cards are perfect for one of these blocks and your photo sits as another. I then add a largish title and some journaling. A few little embellishments and its done.”

LOREDANA BUCARIA “When I feel without any good idea to start a page, when I feel empty, when I feel like I am not creative at all I usually take a look at Pinterest inspirations, online galleries and then I clean my scrap room and my house. During cleaning I have a lot of ideas -- don’t ask me how but it’s true! Then I start to create. I begin from my photo and then I add to the page with papers, colors, stamps and embellishments.”

OTHER IDEAS FROM THE JOT GIRLS
I can be a bit of a complex creative - always inspired and full of ideas but can get myself into a right messy muddle trying to transfer the ideas and inspirations from my mind to a physical creation. Here’s a few of my go tos when it comes to feeling a bit scrap blocked.
√ YouTube vids -- I am always hankering to create after watching people like Suse Fish, Missy Whidden, and our very own Raquel Bowman. √ Also Pinterest and Instagram are great places for inspiration. √ Additionally, I find quotes, song lyrics, and even flipping through a magazine or brochure can spark the inspiration you need to create something. √ Challenges like mood boards and sketches are great starting points too. One of the big things I’ve found when it comes to ‘scrap block’ is that it can usually be tracked back to ourselves. It’s a mind set thing. Everyday stresses and pressures flood our minds, we over think things, we try to rush or push the

creative flow, we downgrade and doubt ourselves -- it’s a common downfall of the creative mind..always so many tabs open with thoughts, ideas and notions, lists, and memories filling our heads. And it’s all these things that are major mojo muddlers and tend to block the flow. Some of my best layouts (in my eyes) have been when I’ve freed my mind and just LET GO and let it happen. Whether I’ve gathered inspiration from any of the aforementioned pathways or just grabbed bits and pieces from my stash and just let it rip! Such a liberating and thrilling experience when you conquer that scrap block!! It’s just a matter of keeping on and not giving into it. ~Anna
Watching a few process videos from your favourite scrappers on You Tube can help with inspiration. Two of my favourites are Paige Evans and Suse Fish. ~Sheree
Make a card or write in a planner or journal and an idea for a layout might be sparked. ~ Kim J
I scrap lift myself - and make sure I limit myself to the supplies I choose. Adele from Inkie Quill does a ‘Grab 5’ and uses that as inspo. ~Mardi
Pinterest is my go-to! I've created a board for the pages that inspire me so I can scroll through for inspiration when I need it. ~Yvette.
Grab a 6x6 paper pad and make a few quick and easy cards - a sure way to gently ease the mojo back. ~Lauren

I stuck very closely to Jamie’s original design, using it much like a sketch, but I shrunk it down to a 9x12� size. I compensated for the black and white photo by adding lots of bright colours in my papers and embellishments. But the heartfelt journaling is still my favourite part.

I’ve pretty much copied the design Mardi created for her layout. The perfect placement of paper, embellishments and ink splatters just got me! Aside from a couple of added embellishments from my stash, I’ve created this layout using a kit by Felicity Jane. Kinda refreshing to create without any guesswork - from a tried and true design to a specially curated kit of products, this layout was a breeze to pull together! But credit where credit is due, it’s all thanks to Mardi for the original inspiration! Jot Magazine 49

Feeling stuck - grab a back copy of any issue of Jot and flip and find! Start with this layout... by me. Oh and try a new size - this layout measures 9x9 inch and sometimes creating on a smaller space can mean there is less overwhelm with trying to fill a larger space.

Cut your cardstock to size - my layout is 9x9inch and swipe on some paint .. swipe randomly using acrylic paint and a dry, flat foam brush.

Use letter stickers to add in your title. I’ve layered felt alphabet letters and small orange letter stickers as my title over my photo.
Add a 4 cm strip of cardstock to the bottom half of your layout. Attach a few random patterned paper offcuts, layered over the top. Add a scrap of fabric.

Head to the sewing machine and add a few random rows of machine stitching, keeping all layers of fabric and patterned paper in place.
Add a row of machine stitching through the centre of your patterned paper strip and extend it off the edge. Using embroidery thread in a contrasting colour, add a few hand stitches as shown.

Print out your story onto white copy paper, cut into strips and attach to your layout as shown. Also add in more punched holes along the right hand top edge of your cardstock.

Adding in the finishing touches: add in another journaling strip, a button and I’ve hand stitched a metal hinged ring to my layout as shown.
Add a strip of patterned paper measuring 2cm wide and 11cm long, tear the edge and attach just above your photo edge, flush with the right hand side.
I’ve chosen a really odd sized photo - 9x16cm and mounted it on white cardstock. Attach your photo about 6cm from the top edge. Swipe some more blue paint across the left hand side and top left corner of your photo.

Pocket page filler cards are super easy to coordinate and create if you have a theme in mind! Hearts and flowers can be used for more masculine filler cards too if you are selective with your colour scheme. The orange, navy and grey colour combination seems to be my go-to choice, especially if I want to use hearts and flowers as part of my design.

I started this card by cutting out the background panel using a Neat and Tangled die called “Wholehearted”. It allows you to fold over some of the hearts which is so fun! After that, a little cluster of embellishments is all it needed to be finished.

A FAVOR NATALIE ELPHINSTONE
These delightfully simple boxes make wonderful favors filled with treats for your next party or celebration. Natalie made 25 of these little babies for her daughter’s recent birthday. “I put these together for my daughter’s classmates using Project Life cards from a Becky Higgins core kit... making each box unique, and making another dent in my stash!” With so many to make, Natalie went with the quick and easy method of staples and washi tape. However you could easily step it up a notch and add extra embellishments and more detail if you prefer.

Grab two 3x4 inch pocket cards and halfway along the top of each card, fold/pinch as shown about one inch down the centre of each card. Use tape to adhere the cards together along each side, leaving the top and bottom edges open. Staple along the top as shown, to close the top opening. Fill with treats or gifts. Staple the bottoms together to seal everything up. Stick washi tape over the staples to prevent any sharp edges from catching.

Gather up your pretty papery supplies and a handful of dotty paper bags and make these fun, layered party bags. Swap out the pretty embellishments for some more boyish pieces and these party bags are great for both boys and girls!
ONE // Cut out tags and bows using manual die cutting machine. TWO // Assemble and adhere bow and tag pieces. THREE // Fill lolly bag with treats. FOUR // Embellish your die-cut tag and add the bow and tag to the top of each bag, layered over a paper doily.

We all love a quick and easy project and these guys are super easy to whip together using cellophane bags, paper off cuts and a few embellishments. Add a few machine stitches if you are feeling extra fancy or just stick it down, add a few staples and you’re good to go! ONE // For each bag topper, cut a patterned paper strip measuring the width of your cellophane bag and about four inches wide. Fold in half. TWO// Flatten out again and embellish the lower half of each patterned paper strip.

I have machine stitched a sentiment strip and a circle embellishment, but double sided tape works well to adhere everything in place. THREE // Fill your cellophane bag with treats and lollies. Fold your patterned paper topper in half and staple to the top of each lolly bag.

SHILOH Natalie Elphinstone - The Jot Team Shiloh at 3 Months Things change so quickly as a newborn, so I’m making the effort to record as many of the details as I can. I set up a monthly photo shoot for Shiloh alone, as well as all the kids together. I’m using the same toy each month to gain some kind of size perspective, and I’m making sure to write down her stats, her stages and achievements as well as her daily routine. Each of these monthly pages are grouped together in my baby album so you can flip through and see her grow before your eyes!

MY STORY Lauren Hender - The Jot Team I love the idea of documenting a little of who you, your children and loved ones are at a certain age. I find with my children their lives almost seem to be on fast forward especially with their growth and development. 2018 ALREADY – HARD TO BELIEVE ISN’T IT. WE’RE ALL GETTING OLDER... EVEN YOU DIARY! DON’T DARE THINK YOU ARE EXEMPT! A big event looms this year – Liam turns 21 and to be truthful I’m struggling to deal with it. My first born, once so perfectly tiny and relying solely on ME is now all adult like. So much is going on Liam’s life and I’m so thrilled with the way things are working out for him. From full time uni student, to full time worker he’s deferred his studies to earn some coin and is loving life as a working man. He’s scored a brilliant job, is earning fantastic money and has really fallen on his feet. In Semester 2 he plans to resume part time study and chug through his Engineering degree as he’s committed to finishing it which pleases this mama no end. His other big news since I last shared life with you, Diary, is the 15” rocket tattoo on the back of his left calf..... he’s thrilled with it, it’s growing on me and I bet the next time I write there may even be another one.
Scott, on the other hand, is still a clean skin and like Liam is livin’ the dream! Since finishing school, he’s worked his bum off saving some dollars to move to the big smoke. Two days after Christmas he was all packed and gone, a piece of my heart in the boot of his car even though his new digs are an hour and a bit away by train. Secretly
I’m extremely jealous of his new digs, sharing with my lifelong friend (you remember Mark, right Diary?) smack bang in the middle of the city! Sirens, lights, traffic and nightclubs galore – not a bad place to be for a young bloke! He’s all settled in and so excited about starting at the Conservatorium of Music later in the month.
Lucky child number three, Gina, is also doing well but sometimes forgets she’s only eight. Must come with having older brothers but let me just say this – tweenager!! Not much is safe anymore – just the other weekend I ducked away for a little nana nap, only to wake to Miss G prancing around with a full face of makeup. I shudder at what’s yet to come now she’s moving out of childhood. It’s funny though, she really doesn’t understand how different my younger years were to hers and keeps asking who my favourite You-Tuber was when I was her age! Ummmmmm, should I make her sit and watch The Brady Bunch or F-Troop? Because that’s what I was watching at her age... and on a big, bulky tv that I needed to get up off my bum to change the volume! She’s still dancing and enjoying ballet but has now added learning piano to our roster of afternoon activities. Thankfully the digital piano has an earphone port.... and everyone is happy!
Everything else in life is ticking over nicely...the farmer is still happily tending the flowers and each day I’m thankful for all of our blessings. I’m grateful to you also, Diary, for still being here after all these years, willing to accept my ramblings and keeping them safely. Till soon..
