It’s been one year since I nervously uploaded the very first issue of Jot to the newly built Jot website. I was not expecting such an overwhelmingly positive response to Jot. But it seems I’d struck a chord out there in paper crafting land -- which was both terrifying and exhilarating. Jot has gained momentum very quickly and sometimes I step back and take a breath and pinch myself (not literally as that would really hurt) at how fast things have grown. In some ways it’s like Jot has been around for a life time as it feels like Jot and I are long lost friends. We “get” each other. Back at the end of 2012 I applied for a job. A “real” job - a dress in heels and wear office clothes and actually work with other people and sit in the lunchroom eating my packed lunch working for someone else kinda job. It was as a marketing assistant for a publishing company. I was feeling frustrated and stuck with Etzcetera magazine and didn’t know how to move forward. I felt out of the scrapbook industry loop and my online home for 8 years was changing. I barely scrapbooked anymore. Or blogged. And the majority of my online friends didn’t even make layouts anymore.

I was never so sad when Julie Love, friend, avid obsessed scrapbooker and someone I first met when we were both Scrapbooking Memories Masters packed up all her supplies and gave them to her mother. I missed her work. Julie Love could turn ANY object into a beyond the page masterpiece! I was sad not to see Erica Robinson (then Glover) and her beautiful kids and stories on her layouts anymore. And I was disappointed that Mishell Lancett and Roz James and Kate Mason and so many more from “my crowd” no longer made their beautiful layouts. So, feeling a little lost, I applied for the marketing job - despite not having worked for anyone but myself for many years. Two interviews later and I got the job. I was speechless, terrified and quietly excited that perhaps this was my answer to feeling stuck. Besides .. how wonderful would it be to actually be paid a proper, regular wage and to not have to worry about business stuff. During my second interview, the CEO asked about Etzcetera. He commented about trying to succeed in the general crafts industry and that in his vast experience, general craft publications didn’t sell or perform as well as niche/single crafts titles.

That idea stuck with me.

Unlike me with the job. I only stayed a day. The staff were lovely but here I was doing all the tasks for them that I should have been doing for my own business and it was unfair to stay on with an employer who genuinely needed someone to help them when my heart was elsewhere. I sometimes think what things would be like now if I’d stayed there with that job.. And the real truth is...

Jot would never have happened. Jot was an idea swirling in the back of my head for a few months, quietly telling me this was a good idea. I kept pushing the idea away but Jot didn’t give up! Several months after the shortest marketing assistant career in history, in January 2013, I caught the Project Life bug. Bad. And suddenly I knew what niche publication I HAD to do. While my scrapping world had changed, the fact that so many people love to document their lives had not changed.. and now they wanted to do it in an instant..Whether that was by adding a photo to Instagram, uploading a Facebook comment or taking photos with their phone.. people were still documenting life and doing so very passionately. You can read more about how I chose the name Jot here, but eventually, after asking for guidance during a quiet reflection one weekend at the beach on our annual Church Camp, the name Jot popped into my head and refused to jump out again.

And so Jot it was. I’ve had a really beautiful first year with Jot. I’ve been fortunate to have welcomed in a talented and supportive Jot Girls team as well as my right hand girl Lisa Pate. Jot is still so new and it’s been awesome to have been recognised by some of the big players in

the paper crafts industry. So far we have had the chance to partner with Heidi Swapp, Becky Higgins, American Crafts and Craft House. And we have plans for many more joint ventures. At the time of writing this, our last issue had eclipsed all our other issues with 522,000+ readers.

I am very thankful for our beautiful Jot audience. Jot has blossomed to include our membership site the Jot Spot and our new classroom space.. Jot Workshops. We are just about to run our very first Jot Pockets 6 week class to help you beat Project Life overwhelm PLUS we have our monthly Mood Board challenges and regular blog posts. And I feel we’ve only just scratched the surface of Jot’s potential. I remember a scene in my beloved Gilmore Girls TV series where Lorelei, Suki and Michel were at the trial run of their about to open Dragonfly Inn (for non Gilmore Girls fans, hang in there as I do have a point to make).. After mishaps and ups and downs and a roller coaster ride of emotions, Lorelei turned to the others that first night in business and said simply, “this is gonna work”. And that’s the feeling I had when Jot first hit the digital news stands. That deep instinct of a feeling. This is gonna work. And while I have had my own share of ups and downs and oh my God this is too much work for one person and I can’t afford to hire anyone, and what on earth am I doing.. I know deep down, despite the stress I sometimes feel, that I am on the right track and I can figure things out as I go along.

Happy first birthday to my friend Jot and thank you to you guys.. Our readers.. for without our audience there would be no Jot.

The photos on my layout were taken on a day that was actually a sad day for me but it brought about many positive, thoughts and sentiments and reminded me that life is short - make the most of it. I want to be able to live life to the fullest and document not just the photographic snapshots but the thoughts and feelings of that moment in time. Scrapbooking really is great therapy. I always feel so uplifted and empowered when I get creative. Enjoy today - because you are alive!

Use frames to define your photos so they don’t get lost on a busy background.

Using offcuts and leftovers of patterned papers in my stash, I have created a photo mat for my layout.

I tend to hoard my paper scraps and a nice pile accumulates pretty quickly. My challenge is to firstly, use up your scraps on your layout, and secondly, record a poignant moment in your life that has had a lasting effect on you. Something you have learnt, something that means a great deal to you, or something you always want to remember.

Did you catch Heidi Swapp or Becky Higgins, or maybe BOTH if you were lucky ducks during their recent Australian tour in conjunction with Spotlight stores? Or maybe you caught up with Becky and the team from Craft House at the Project Life Party day in Sydney? Here at Jot, we were ecstatic when Heidi contacted us about the possibility of the Jot Girls coming on board to help them promote their upcoming tour. Within days, the girls all had packages bursting with Heidi and Becky products and they dived in immediately to start creating. While we shared a lot of the projects on our Jot blog, I wanted to share some of the other layouts and projects the Jot Girls have continued to make - it was a GENEROUS kit.

Stephanie Bryan - The Jot Team I fell in love with the Heidi Swapp Hello Today acrylic stars as soon as I opened my box of goodies. I love the contrast of colors - the pop of blue with the softer mint green. I’ve made a page similar to this before and love using something like stars as the background for my page. I started by just randomly laying them on my page, trying to mix some of the open stars with solid stars. Then I layered on my larger photo, patterned paper and stickers for a simple finish.

My layout uses half a memory file for the background and then another half memory file under my photo. The stars and banner were perfect for my boy themed layout of Riley with one of his first school awards! The Heidi Swapp block stamp created beautifully crisp images too!

The kit is amazing and packed with beautiful product! I decided to cut one of the cute memory files in half for my layout background, used some Heidi Swapp ColorShine from my stash with the masks to create my heart feature and the rest of the layout fell into place with all the coordinating embellishments and stickers!

I just love all of Heidi Swapp’s stamp sets. The script font is so simple, but so stunning on a page. I wanted to add several different stamps to my background and decided to create my own script “patterned paper” using a repetition of stamps. I stamped them with pink ink on white card stock and ended up layering a piece of vellum over the paper to soften the pink a little. I finished my page with a 4x6 photo on a few paper layers and several lovely embellishments from Heidi’s kit.

I‘m a bit of a fan girl when it comes to patterns, collage and stitching. Rather than use the Project Life insert cards in the traditional manner, I decided to cut them up and collage a fun background. • • • • •

Cut your base cardstock to the size you want your finished collage - mine is 6 x 6 inches Cut the Project Life card into strips and using double sided tape adhere them to your base as shown. Use your sewing machine to stitch into place. Add extra embellishments. I stamped over the collaged base, sprayed and dripped ColorShine plus added other lumpy embellishments from the Heidi Swapp range. Finish by adding your photo.

I found these few of my son’s first birthday and I knew they would be perfect together on a layout. I cropped and printed my photos at roughly 3x3 inches which allowed me to cluster them together in the middle of the page and sprinkle a few embellishments here and there around my photos.

let’s get hitched - an engagement guest book This guest book is made for a rustic, simple and quirky wedding or engagement. Each guest can pick a tag or Polaroid photo (or even take their own Polaroid), leave a little message and pop it in the book. Twenty one today. Twenty one today. This is the guest book I have made to be used at my daughter Briony’s upcoming 21st birthday party. I used a chipboard album with quite a number of pages so I am hoping to not only leave it out for the guests to write in, but also hoping to include a few photos from the night afterwards so that she has a lovely reminder of the evening. I kept the supplies to a minimum and repeated the theme throughout the pages. Each page has a tag feature and some misting which keeps it consistent all the way through. Plus by repeating the elements, it came together quickly and easily.

One Scrappy Doctor blogger and designer Natalie Elphinstone lives in the coastal suburbs of Melbourne, Australia with her husband and two young daughters Bethany and Moriah. Natalie is, yep you guessed it by her blog title, a doctor - an Obstetrician to be precise and describes her blog as scrapbook orientated, painfully honest and overwhelmingly passionate. Blogging for five years Natalie says her first post went up in April 2009 and she mainly blogs about her scrapbooking adventures, the method behind her creative process and the stories that have inspired her layouts. “But I hold nothing back,” Natalie says, “And I’m not afraid to be “real” - so yes there are stories about my toilet training battles, my crafting failures and my wonderfully rewarding but occasionally gory profession.”

I live in Melbourne, Australia. I love nothing more than the squeal of joy and patter of two girls running towards me for hugs when I walk in the door at night. I make mainly 12x12” layouts but quite a few cards too.

I eat quick carbs during work hours and then whatever glorious meals my amazing husband makes.

I drink more coffee than water some days.

I watch comedy sitcoms such as 30 Rock, Arrested Development, Parks and Recreation... the list goes on! I do count myself ridiculously blessed for all that I have in life

I am not.. a health-food junkie nor a fitness-freak. Not even close.

I document the big events, my working adventures, our day-to-day lives. Anything

that I consider important in the moment. I am passionate about.. this hobby as a way of passing down a snapshot of our lives for future generations to know us better.

What is the best thing about blogging? “That it’s essentially my diary. It just so happens to be online and available for anyone to read. Being able to interact with people who understand exactly where you’re coming from and who never cease to be encouraging and supportive is so wonderful.” Natalie grew up on a farm and still thinks of herself as a country girl. “I met my husband at the age of 19 and we were married two years later,” she says. “Still going strong 11 years and 2 daughters later - we’re hoping to enlarge our family sometime soon.”

What are your paper crafting highs so far? Being invited onto the Studio Calico Creative Team, being named as an Australian Scrapbooking Memories Master and just recently teaching alongside scrapbooking superstars like Becky Higgins, Ali Edwards, Heidi Swapp (and more!) for the Big Picture Classes National Scrapbooking Day events. These honours were not even imaginable 5 years ago when I started blogging, and I still barely consider them real today... sometimes I think I might still be dreaming.

I decided to mix it up a little and layered my stripes vertically, rather than horizontal to create a more dramatic background against my horizontal photo. I’ve created a watercolour effect in my striped background by spritzing the page with water and swiping colour mist solutions onto the page using a paintbrush. Winter in Hobart is cold - very cold. But it is a really beautiful place to live. Our family loves to head up Mount Wellington at least once a year - as soon as there is a dusting of snow the kids are asking if we can go.

On this layout I couldn’t resist using a lot of black and white photos as the colours were fairly muted anyway given the snow and cold weather. And blue seemed to be the ideal colour choice - it really highlights the cold.

Stephanie Bryan - The Jot Team I love using enlarged photos on layouts. I love how the picture itself can tell such a story, and how the main focus becomes the subject of the photo. I couldn’t wait to print out this photo of my son and use it for this project. I printed my photo at 8.5x11 and trimmed a few patterned papers to create a little border around the left hand side of my photo, as well as the top right hand side. These papers helped balance out the composition of my photo without being too overwhelming or distracting. I typed my journaling directly onto my photo after I printed it out and added a few embellishments around my page for interest.

This was one of those spur of the moment shots taken on my phone and I just loved how pale and dreamy it was. I printed it at home on plain white cardstock, knowing it would suit the dreamy photo, and embellished it with neutrals.

the grandest of canyons Kim Archer - The Jot Team

This layout is of Capri and me at the Grand Canyon on our push bikes - a major event for me as I haven’t been on a bike in like forever! The canyon was one of those moments during our US holiday that took my breath away. I wasn’t expecting to be so affected by the magnitude of it and the feelings of emotion when I stood there and caught sight of the canyon for the first time.

To keep the focus on my sons’ faces, I used embellishment clusters in the white space at the top left hand corner and in the bottom right hand corner.

STORY + PHOTOS | Kim Archer Sometimes, when I haven’t got a block of time to put together an entire Project Life spread, I love to make up a few 3x4” decorated journaling cards. The mini cards satisfy my creative urge and I have journaling cards good to go when I do have a block of creative time free to put an entire spread together. 3x4” cards are such a fun size to play with. It’s like creating teeny, tiny scrapbook layouts! Here I show you a set of three cards I recently made for my Project Life album featuring my daughter’s 15th birthday celebrations. THIS CARD FEATURES THE BIRTHDAY GIRL AND SOME PRETTY LAYERS. HERE’S HOW I MADE THIS ONE. • Choose a 3x4” card and add a stencilled misted pattern using Heidi’s Color Shine in rose. I have used a Prima daisy stencil. • Add some layers of patterned paper, a paper doily chopped in half and some fabric scraps to the base of your card. I’ve used a black and white photo and stapled it in place. • Type up a sentiment onto white card stock and cut into a strip, adding it to the right hand side of your photo edge. Head to the sewing machine and sew it all in place. Finish with a few enamel dots.

Your 3x4” Project Life cards don’t need to be fancy or overly decorated. Sometimes just a few extra elements are needed to turn your cards into something fun and fresh. • Add a torn strip of washi tape to the top edge of your chosen 3x4” card. • Add in some alphabet letters for your title. I have used Basic Grey white chipboard letters and used some Heidi Swapp ColorShine to colour the fabric chipboard number“15” from American Crafts. • Finish this card by adding in a few rows of machine stitching and punching a small circle in the top right hand side of your card.

hip hip hooray. Again, your Project Life cards can be as simple or as complex as you want them to be. This one is a simple one, designed to coordinate with my other two birthday cards. • Add a few splatters of ink to your card base. I’ve used Heidi Swapp’s ColorShine in rose and splattered the ink randomly over the card. • Type on your sentiment using a typewriter or run it through your home printer. • Cut a patterned paper triangle to form the hat. Attach in place on your card. Add a button or star shape for the hat “pom pom” and stitch on a small strip of scrunched crepe paper along the bottom edge of the party hat. Leave threads dangling for a fun finish.

I ended up creating an intro page and a double spread for my album about our vacation on Cyprus. I love how simple and easy everything came together and how I was able to preserve those memories in just about a few minutes.

I love printing my photos with a small white border around them. My printer always scales them down a bit and I end up having slightly smaller photos. To make sure those pictures remain centred in the plastic pockets, I placed a small amount of double sided tape behind them and was able to achieve a bit of a transparent look.

For this spread, I trimmed all of my photos and cards to 3x3 inches and then placed them in a blank page protector. I sewed each column first, added my row of photos and then sewed horizontally above each row. I added a single wood veneer in one of the middle pockets to create a fun “peek-a-boo� effect in my book.

The daily, weekly or even monthly approach to pocket scrapbooking never held a great deal of appeal to me. For a long time, I resisted the concept simply because I felt our life wasn’t interesting enough to warrant buying all those kits, collections and different pocket page protectors. It wasn’t until I looked beyond the ‘traditional’ concept of pocketed scrapbooking, that I realised it would be the perfect solution for an everincreasing pile of subject-specific photos.

If your children are anything like mine they are mad about sports. They both play soccer and tennis but swimming definitely tops the list of favourites. In any given season, they could compete in up to twenty carnivals. This means lots of photos.

With so many images waiting to be scrapped, pocketed scrapbooking gives me the perfect opportunity to capture a range of different memories from each of the carnivals they attend.

dear diary. After narrowly surviving Round One of fussy eating with eldest son Liam as a youngster... and then having a marginally easier time with second son Scott.... I’d convinced myself the mealtime circus would be far easier to manage this time round with child number three.

but the four year old might just be winning. As a well-educated woman and experienced parent, I’m very aware of exactly how little nutrition there is in a chicken nugget. But what’s a mum to do?

Who was I kidding?

With Mike working at the farm until late most nights I’m alone, up against some incredibly stubborn opposition from the little Miss.

No. Such. Luck.

So, looks like chicken nuggets it is.

Gina and I are at loggerheads come dinner time every night - and I hate admitting it,

I haven’t given up entirely though. Just last night, I daringly snuck two slices of cucumber on her plate. My downfall was ducking to the

toilet and leaving her unsupervised for all of 58 seconds. I returned to assurances she’d eaten both pieces and it was “delicious mummy.”

Liam’s now got his very own means of spending even more time away from home.

Of course I called her bluff.

I’m not a helicopter mum by any means, but there’s certainly been comfort in knowing his whereabouts as playing chauffeur gave me a little bit of control.

Then I started hunting, as there’s no way she’d eaten one piece, let alone both. She told me smugly they weren’t in the bin. And indeed she was right. After much coaxing she retrieved them...from underneath the couch!

His P-plates haven’t arrived yet, but it’s now just a matter of time. He’s done all his hours, there have been no more encounters with street signs of any description and the car keys are almost burning a hole in his pocket.

Give me strength. Please.

Like other parents before me, pride and panic are jostling for prime position. I know there will be many sleepless nights ahead waiting for my babyfaced young man to pull his little white Hyundai into the driveway.

And tonight’s dinner performance was almost as bad! Given the oldie-but-goodie choice of ‘eat it or straight to bed’... she chose bed. At just 10 past 6, starving and stubborn. Looks like we’ll be in for a cracker of a day tomorrow! It’s really just a matter of soldiering on, isn’t it? Sigh..... ‘til soon Shari x

The last time I wrote, it was to grizzle about the littlest family member potentially morphing into a chicken nugget. Today I need to tell you about my oldest, Liam.

What’s he done? He’s gone out and bought himself a car. And I don’t think I was at all prepared for the inevitability of this momentous occasion. I think what I’m struggling with most, is knowing

Normal, right? Occasions like this have me wondering how I even came to be the mother of a 17 year old, let alone one so eager to embrace the independence of youth, all without needing me so much these days. Maybe I’m redundant? Almost but of course not quite yet as there’s still the four year old who needs to learn table manners and the value of vegetables. I’ll admit to being a little reflective and nostalgic. Sigh. But to cut the soppy sentimentality short. I’m eagerly anticipating the first occasion I have to call on him for a taxi service home. And, yep, you can bet it will be in the middle of the night..... from a party... even if staying up past 9.30pm will exhaust me for days.

It’s called payback, isn’t it? ‘til soon Shari x
