ArtThe Art course in Year 9 is predominately technique-based, the main aim to give pupils the opportunity to explore as many different materials and processes as possible in preparation for GCSE but also to make the year dynamic and fun. The topics are designed like an art foundation course and aims to encourage experimentation as having investigating materials and process.
Typically, a Year 9 artist will get the experience of working in plaster casting and carving, clay modelling, lino relief printing, dry point, painting and drawing in the broadest sense.
Projects usually last half a term and considerable emphasis is placed on pupils gaining awareness of the work of different artists and cultures. We look at a wide range of influences from Fine art to fashion illustration and everything in between. We have also taken students on trips such as a visit to the Harry Potter film studios to see the artwork that is behind the scenes. We also exhibit students finished pieces so they see their work in a professional setting.
The department is well equipped in a new building with spacious creative open studios. The department has excellent printmaking facilities, large kiln, ceramic wheels, small darkroom and specialist Apple iMac suite running Adobe Creative Cloud and giclée printer. We have one the best art libraries of any school with titles covering Fine Art to Sculpture, Graphic design and Art History. The studios are regularly open after school and lunchtimes for students to work in lovely creative environment. We have a dedicated gallery.
