Primary Parenting with Power Scripture of the week: ”For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11
The Unmotivated Child Previously, we wrote about strong-willed children who often develop into strong leaders later in life. This week we are looking a little closer at the opposite, the unmotivated child; how to recognise and parent these.
Aquathlon State Championships On Saturday 23rd October, Dimi and Jaz Coventry competed in a aquathlon (run, swim, run) event which was held in Wynnum, Brisbane. Dimi and Jaz both did very well. Dimi got 1st in her age group and was crowned 2010 Aquathlon State Champion! Jaz also had tough competition and got 3rd in her age group. Congratulations girls!
Unmotivated children are generally passive, cooperative, flexible, easy going and accommodating. These children may be easier to get along with because they lack the drive of strong-willed children, but parents also struggle with these children, at times. They may not have the fortitude to stand up for themselves, withstand temptation or push hard to complete a task. They are sometimes people-pleasers and may be easily directed in positive or negative ways, depending on whom they are with. Even unmotivated children wrestle with issues and questions in their hearts, although you may not see it as clearly as in the strong-willed child. Some children process things more internally and aren’t as transparent. These children appear compliant, allowing others to make decisions or take the lead, but their anger may be growing inside. Sometimes parents overlook the unmotivated child because he or she isn’t causing any trouble, generally gets along with people, and appears easygoing. It may be more difficult to know what is going on in this child’s heart. Understanding this child requires some extra work and effort. The Bible tell us of people who needed a little extra motivation to get moving in the right direction. God often came alongside people such as Moses, Elijah, and Jacob to motivate them to take initiative when they might not have done so otherwise. Children who tend to give up easily need help to see the path before them more clearly so they can take the steps necessary for success.
Strategy for the week: Take some time this week to discuss with your child where they can see themselves when they have grown up. Help them to create a vision and a pathway for their dreams and aspirations. Remember you are part of your child’s future success. ~ In His service, Klaus Knobloch and Rosemary Whincop

Early Learning Programs Prep Chapel Highlights PK Chapel presentation this week involved all children taking part, from announcing the order of items to sharing favourite bible stories. Well done to the presenters, announcers and story tellers. Our preps are growing up aren’t they!
Secondary Parenting I thought you may like this article I found. Before we have children or work with them, we have all the answers to how children should be parented. It’s a bit “olde-worlde” but I hope you enjoy it anyway.
Beatitudes For Parents One man says he had a great speech for parents. It was called, “How to Raise Your Children.” He went on speaking tours in the Midwestern United States and was paid a high honorarium for the talk. “This guy will wow you,” people said. Then they had their first child. His majestic speech lost its punch at 2:00 AM with the baby in full cry. But he kept trying. He renamed his new, modified speech “Some Suggestions for Parents” and charged bravely on. They had two more children. The speech changed again. And again. Now it’s called, “Feeble Hints for Fellow Strugglers” and he begins with the question: “Does anyone here have a few words of wisdom?” Parents through the ages can identify. “Could someone, please, just give me the final answers to parenting?” we ask. “ALL of them? Could someone please tell me how to respond and what to do and what to say and when to say it and do it and tell me now?”
•
Blessed is the gift of consistency, for it is heart’s-ease in childhood.
•
Blessed are they who accept the awkwardness of growth, for they are aware of the choice between marred furnishings and damaged personalities.
•
Blessed are the teachable, for knowledge brings understanding, and understanding brings love.
•
Blessed are the men and women who in the midst of the unpromising mundane, give love, for they bestow the greatest of all gifts to each other, to their children, and -- in an ever-widening circle -- to their fellow men.
Blessed are those who read these words... but more blessed will be they who follow them! Happy parenting. ASAP. Remember the recall. Response decisions. Lifelong learning. Remember the cat will become a dog again. Check out Professional Development for Mothers. Encourage common sense. Healed and whole. Media literacy. Forgive quickly. The gift. Follow the directions. Take the time. Check the habits. Laugh, often and loud. Be still and know that I am God. Cast your burden on the Lord. ~ Rhonda Bevan, Head of Secondary
But, of course, we ask the impossible. Maybe this will help. I have saved it for years, and I’m convinced it was written by one who has been there.... It is not the final answer to parenting, but cherish it as a dose of wisdom worth re-reading as often as possible.
Beatitudes For Parents by Marion E. Kinneman (1895-1985) (used by permission) •
Blessed are those parents who make their peace with spilled milk and with mud, for of such is the kingdom of childhood.
•
Blessed is the parent who engages not in the comparison of his child with others, for precious unto each is the rhythm of his own growth.
•
Blessed are the fathers and mothers who have learned laughter, for it is the music of the child’s world.
•
Blessed and wise are those parents who understand the goodness of time, for they make it not a sword that kills growth but a shield to protect.
•
Blessed and mature are they who without anger can say “no,” for comforting to the child is the security of firm decisions.

A Minister and a Witness Quote from “Walk in Faith” by Ray McCauley So I said, “Who are You, Lord?” And He said, “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. But rise and stand on your feet; for I have appeared to you for this purpose, to make you a minister and a witness both of the things which you have seen and of the things which I will yet reveal to you.” God gives you a purpose and then, while you are busy with the purpose, He anoints you for that task. He does not anoint you whilst you are doing nothing! Unfortunately, many Christians are constantly striving to be anointed, going to meeting upon meeting, but the truth is that when you go into all the world, then the Lord anoints you to preach the Gospel to every creature. Too often we are like motor cars that have been fully serviced, our tanks are full of petrol, but we have not even switched on the engine! When you start to move, God will direct you. He can tell you when to turn left or right (or even turn completely around!). He will tell you when to slow down and when to go faster, but you have to start the engine. He is not going to make you move; you have to do that yourself. It is important for all of us to be doers of the Word, being obedient in the small things first. Most people are waiting on God and He is waiting upon them! Get busy about your Father’s business! Please be aware whooping cough - pertussis is evident in the community at the present time. If you are concerned about your child, please see your GP or the college nurse.
Attention: Parents and Guardians of Primary School students Please note that school finishes at 3:05pm for lower primary and at 3:10pm for the upper primary. We have noted, especially lately, that a large number of students are being collected early from school. Teaching times for all of our students occur until the end of the school day. Students leaving early interferes with the child receiving instructions and disrupts the rest of the class when the teacher is disturbed by a phone call and then must ensure the child is packed up early to leave the class. Sometimes it is unavoidable to schedule an appointment during school times and we understand that at times this may occur. If these appointments could please be kept to a minimum, all students and teachers would benefit. Regular early finishes for a child, due to an extra curricular activity or specific individual need, must be written in a letter and addressed to Mrs Lorraine Oswald for approval.
We meet 8.30am every Thursday morning. Beginning with a wonderful morning tea and a chat with friends, then a fantastic time of worship and the Word, followed by a varied range of interest groups. King’s had nine students qualify for the Queensland Athletic Championships. Demii Maher-Smith, Jade Brandt, Laura Manson, Bernard Lierse, Phoebe-Rose Turton, Samantha Owen, Milan Egic, Nathaniel Wilson and Peter Eddowes. All these students represented King’s last weekend at the State Athletic Championships. Of these nine, Peter Eddowes, Laura Manson, Phoebe-Rose Turton and Demii Maher–Smith all qualified for the National Athletic Championships next March. Well done to all these athletes. The students have been training with commitment and dedication. We wish them all the very, very best for the National Championships.

National Golf championships - Dee-Dee Russell
Last weekend Dee-Dee Russell competed in the Aaron Baddeley Junior Championships in Melbourne. This tournament is regarded as the National finals in golf and Dee-Dee finished 3rd overall and just missed a place in the Australian team to tour to China. Her handicap is down to 3 and she has also been included in the Gold Coast Academy of Sport. This is such a fantastic level of achievement and places Dee-Dee among the elite golfers in Australia. Super work, Dee-Dee. Dee-Dee Russell
Talented All-Rounder - Jalen Manumaleuga
This talented all rounder in Year 9 who recently qualified for the Regional Athletics Championships has also now had success in AFL, Rugby League and Basketball. Jalen has recently been selected in the Regional U16 AFL team to contest the state championships in 2011. He has also been added to the Titans U16 team to contest the state titles in Rugby League. In Basketball he was also recently selected in the U18 team at Runaway Bay while still only fourteen. He will be very busy in combining the demands of these different sports and we wish him all the very best as he prepares for the state titles. Well done, Jalen!

Queensland Open water Championships Joshua Winnington
Joshua Winnington competed at the Queensland Open Water Championships held at Lake Kawana last weekend. Over the 5km distance Joshua finished a commendable 3rd in the U13 and 14 age groups. Josh has now been selected to represent Queensland at the National Championships in March next year at Penrith. We congratulate Josh on a huge performance in difficult conditions. We wish him all the very best as he prepares for the National Championships. Well done, Joshua! ~ Peter Gillett, High School Sport Co-ordinator
