Farewell Class of 2010 The time of celebration, excitement and sadness has arrived. Last Wednesday night we celebrated the achievements of our high school students. Stefan Tanjung was named Dux of Year 12, while Aya Shimizu and Matthew Johns, our college captains, received the Year 12 Principal’s Award. Year 12 are excited about finishing twelve years of formal schooling and moving on to new pathways. However this is touched with sadness as they leave behind all that has been so secure and familiar over their schooling years. This group was named the Year of Commission as we believe they are ready to be commissioned to go into the world as people who will make a positive difference in the lives of others. Staff will be sad to see this Year 12 cohort leave. They have been such a friendly and cooperative group in the school this year. We wish them God’s richest blessings for the future. Thank you Year 12. ~ Rhonda Bevan, Head of Secondary

Early Learning Programs Prep Celebration There was a little bit of waiting but lots of action to follow when the Preps celebrated the end of their first year at school last Friday. They showed us their growing maturity with delightful performances. A big thankyou to Mr Gebbett for stepping in with such flair.
Primary Parenting with Power Scripture of the week: “Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction and do not forsake your mother’s teaching.” Proverbs 1:8
Are You Giving Instructions Clearly?
Last week, we talked about giving children clear warnings to establish what exactly our expectations as parents are. This time, we will look at the way we should give our children clear instructions about our expectations. We have all found ourselves in situations where adults are supervising children. Some adults have the ability to command attention (remember some of those teachers you had when you were younger) and get children to listen better than others. All they use is what we call a firm instruction, a very important part of the discipline process. It is quite useful whether you’re working with your own children or someone else’s. Good discipline doesn’t just mean finding appropriate consequences. In fact, developing the skill of giving instructions can prevent many of the discipline problems we experience. Here is what makes a firm instruction work best. To give a firm instruction you must first get your child’s attention. This may involve things like moving close to the child, obtaining eye contact or requesting the child remove the earphones. Next give a brief, firm, verbal instruction. You don’t have to be harsh or irritated, just calm and matter-of-fact, communicating one-on-one with the child. After giving the instruction, teach your children how to acknowledge your request. This will help you know that the message was received. A good response is to say, “Okay mum” or “Yes dad.” This type of response tells you three things. It tells you that the child has heard the instruction, avoiding the common excuse later, “I didn’t hear you say that.” Secondly, the child’s acknowledgment tells you that the child intends to follow through, and lastly, the way the child responds to you indicates the child’s attitude at the time. Is this an angry or disrespectful “Okayyyy Dadddd!” response? If so, now you know you’re dealing with an attitude problem, not just working on following directions. It is a difficult thing for a parent to not get emotionally upset, especially if children try to manipulate emotions in a tense situation. Try to remain as calm as you can, but if you can’t, don’t explode and react in anger and frustration. Respond with something like: ”I am so upset and disappointed right now, we will continue this conversation later. Please stay in your room until then.” Strategy for the week: The firm instruction is one step in a complete discipline process, yet it’s often overlooked. Take time to evaluate your instructions and you’ll be surprised at how small changes can make a big difference. ~ In His service, Klaus Knobloch and Rosemary Whincop

Secondary God’s Ability It is reassuring to read in the Bible stories of people who God used despite their shortcomings. It says a lot about the nature of our God and His ability to work through us despite our flaws.
God Can Use You!
There are many reasons why God shouldn’t have called you. But don’t worry. You’re in good company . . . . ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■
Moses stuttered. David’s armour didn’t fit. John Mark was rejected by Paul. Timothy had ulcers. Hosea’s wife was a prostitute. Amos’ only training was in the school of fig-tree pruning. Jacob was a liar. David had an affair. Solomon was too rich. Jesus was too poor. Abraham was too old. David was too young. Peter was afraid of death. Lazarus was dead. John was self-righteous. Naomi was a widow. Paul was a murderer. So was Moses. Jonah ran from God. Miriam was a gossip. Gideon and Thomas both doubted. Jeremiah was depressed and suicidal. Elijah was burnt out. John the Baptist was a loudmouth. Martha was a worry-wart. Mary was lazy. Samson had long hair. Noah got drunk.
Did I mention that Moses had a short fuse? So did Peter, Paul -- well, lots of folks did. But God doesn’t require a job interview. He doesn’t hire and fire like most bosses, because He’s more our dad than our boss. He doesn’t look at financial gain or loss. He’s not prejudiced or partial, not judging, grudging, sassy, or brassy, not deaf to our cry, not blind to our need. As much as we try, God’s gifts are free. We could do wonderful things for wonderful people and still not be . . . wonderful. Satan says, “You’re not worthy.” Jesus says, “So what? . . . I AM.” Satan looks back and sees our mistakes. God looks back and sees the cross. He doesn’t calculate what you did in ‘98. It’s not even on the record. Sure. There are lots of reasons why God shouldn’t have called us. But if we are magically in love with Him, if we hunger for Him more than our next breath, He’ll use us in spite of who we are, where we’ve been, or what we look like. Pray that as Christians, we will step out of our limitations into the illimitable nature of who God is. Then our passion for God and our passion to communicate with Him will make mincemeat of our limitations. Happy parenting. ASAP. Remember the recall. Response decisions. Lifelong learning. Remember the cat will become a dog again. Check out Professional Development for Mothers. Encourage common sense. Healed and whole. Media literacy. Forgive quickly. The gift. Follow the directions. Take the time. Check the habits. Laugh, often and loud. Be still and know that I am God. Cast your burden on the Lord. Psalm 23. The Reason for the Season. ~ Rhonda Bevan, Head of Secondary

Upper Primary Presentation Night
Upper Primary Presentation Night was a celebration of the achievements of our wonderful students. They have excelled in all areas - from outstanding NAPLAN results to their creativity, sporting achievements and service they have given others throughout the year. During the night, we were entertained by the wind ensemble, strings orchestra, concert band, choir, Year 4 strings, dance groups and an amazing item by the Year 7 chapel band lead by
Mr Peter Malcolm and Miss Trishelle Grady. What an array of talent. (Have a look at the King’s blog for photos.) The night was a celebration of all our upper primary students, who are growing in character as they mature and take on new responsibilities and challenges. Thank you to our wonderful students and of course their parents for making 2010 so successful and we look forward to 2011 as they move on to their new year and new challenges.
Our graduating Year 7 students the students and compared to all of the other participants in this Australasian event. Isaac james-hook received a badge for the top 10% in the competition and nine other students received special badges in addition to their Colour for the top 25% results overall. These students were Kitae Kang, Chad Bowes, Jo-Lene Lee, Daniel Nowshadi, Kye Donnelly, Maddyson Colley, Kevin Pieterse, Mai Phillips and Grace Payne. Well done, students, on an outstanding achievement. ~ Lindsay Genge, Primary Sport Coordinator
Colours Presentation
The fifth Primary Colours presentation was held in the auditorium at Wednesday’s assembly this week. The students proudly received their Colours awards for sporting achievements in gymnastics and athletics, cultural achievements in choir and dance and academic achievements in Maths Olympiad and public speaking. Many parents and friends of the award recipients were on hand to celebrate. Primary Colours – Teal, presented to students in Maths Olympiad and public speaking. Primary Colours – Red, awarded to Isaac James-Hook (Maths Olympiad), Wade Papenfus (athletics), Madison Price, Michelle Bristow and Himeka Onoda (gymnastics). Primary Colours – Gold, presented to Preston Degarnham (athletics), Nicole Allen and Thomas Bristow (gymnastics). Congratulations students on your achievements. Further Information on Maths Olympiad Colours: During 2010, King’s Christian College had 3 teams compete, from years 6 and 7, in the Australasian Maths Olympiad contest. This competition involved completing 5 problem solving tests set monthly throughout terms 2 and 3. To qualify for a ‘Colour’, the students must participate in at least 3 of these competitions. Practise for these examinations occurred as part of the students’ streamed Mathematics lessons when the students focus on strategies to solve complex word problems. At the Colours ceremony, Isaac James-Hook, Maddyson Colley and Meakah Brazel were awarded trophies as the highest scorer for each of the three teams represented by King’s. Additionally, individual points were accumulated by
Teacher’s Profile -
Charm Gleeson Mrs Charm Gleeson has been a wonderful support to our primary school this year. Teaching each of our 30 classes plus PE, music and computers at some stage has been interesting for Mrs Gleeson. She is married to Mr Chris Gleeson who will oversee the Certificate III in Christian Ministry in the high school 2011. They have four adult children and five grandchildren. Together they have given significant time and expertise into the kingdom of God teaching how to have a Godly marriage as well as pastoring in King’s Christian Centre. This last term, our librarian, Mr Andrew Smith, has been on long service leave and Mrs Gleeson has very capably organised classes and overseen the function of the library from Year 5 through to Year 12. Mrs Gleeson has only just recently completed her Masters in Education and as an educator enjoys challenging our students to reach their full potential. Thank you Mrs Gleeson for your amazing contribution at King’s Christian College. Thursday, November 18, 2010 - Page 5

General Obedience or Agreement? Quote from “Walk in Faith” by Ray McCauley If you are willing and obedient, you shall eat the good of the land; but if you refuse and rebel, you shall be devoured by the sword. For the mouth of the Lord has spoken. Isaiah 1:19-20 You cannot force people to be obedient. The story is told of the little boy who was standing up in the classroom. The teacher said, “Johnny sit down,” but he remained standing. She then raged, “Johnny, sit down or you will go to the headmaster!” Johnny sat down and thought to himself, “On the outside I’m sitting down but on the inside I’m standing up!” Many Christians are like that! However, God requires obedience not sacrifice. If we are willing and obedient then we will eat the good of the land.
Page 8 - Thursday, November 18, 2010
Obedience is easy when we are enthusiastic about what we are doing. Let me take as an example my son Joshua. Most days it is quite a task to get him out of bed and ready for school early in the morning. But do you know that the morning that the family was leaving for a holiday to Disneyland, Josh was the first out of bed? His enthusiasm spoke for itself! In the same manner, when we are passionate about the call of God upon our lives, then obedience will follow. Allow the zeal of God to ignite you! Then be obedient to the Spirit of God’s prompting. Submission is tested when you don’t agree - up until that point it is merely agreement. Obey God even if you don’t feel like it! General King’s launches iPhone App In what we believe is a first for Australian schools, King's has launched an iPhone app. The app is designed to inform / remind parents about the information they need to know. It contains a 'calendar' section and a separate 'notices' section for high school, primary, and Noah's Ark. These are updated daily, so the app will always contain the very latest information. You can download the app from the iTunes store for free. (From the app store, search for 'kcc' or 'Kings Christian College.') If you have an iPhone, please download the app and give us some feedback - there is a section inside the app where you can do this. Also, rating the app on the iTunes store will help promote the app. There are more instructions on the College website with links from the home page. This web page explains how to subscribe to the calendar if you don't have an iPhone and also talks about the College blog, Facebook and Twitter pages. Each of these are designed to help keep parents informed of events in the school. The blog especially, is designed to tell the story of College events and contains photos and videos in password protected galleries. The password for these is 'Kings123'. This is a very exciting innovation, and we trust it is a great help to parents.
