" War is very simple, but the simple is very difficult," said Clausewitz, the great military theorist, and he might well have said the same of Rugby football, if he had turned his mind to that other manifestation of human savagery The elementary principles of Rugger are indeed simplicity itself —run full speed, tackle low, shove hard, mark your man,
pass before tackled, watch the ball, etc ; all these things are practically self-evident Yet it is the non-observance of these elementary principles that proved the undoing of our XV this year Anyone who has played or watched goodclass Rugger will agree that the side which is efficient in the elementary principles will win most of its matches even against sides of brilliant tacticians Our XV had admirable

was kept in the Sebright half, and just before half-time Rathbone scored, following brilliant co-operation between forwards and backs, and Hackwood converted The score at half-time was 9 points to 3
Thus far Sebright had succeeded in keeing the score down, but in the second half they felt the strain of constant defence The School forwards were superior in line-out and loose, but well matched in the tight scrums The threequarters produced some brilliant passing, and the whole side attacked continually with the wind in their teeth. Early in the second half Orchard scored and Hackwood converted Shortly afterwards Bryer scored and Hackwood again converted, himself scoring an unconverted try later in the game. Just before the final whistle Sebright made a determined but unsuccessful attempt to score ; the School retaliated and, following a forward rush up-field, J D Poths scored an unconverted try The game was fast, and the School, warming to their task, produced some fine and interesting play Result : Sebright 3, School 25

SCHOOL v WARWICK
Played at Warwick on a fine day
It was obvious from the first that the Warwick threequarters were superior They were much faster and were able to exploit their openings to the full The Warwick forwards had most of the ball in the loose, although they were well matched in the tight scrums In spite of their speed the Warwick three-quarters were well tackled, and thus the score was kept down The School forwards got back well to support their backs in defence, and often relieved the situation After the first few minutes Warwick began to attack, and the play became typical of the rest of the game The Warwick three-quarters frequently pierced the School defence, and the score at half-time was 17—nil in Warwick's favour
In the second half the School began to feel the strain of unabated defence, and Warwick were able to score more frequently The score does not do full justice to the game, in which some good play was produced by both sides Result: Warwick 40, School nil.

SCHOOL v BLOXHAM
Played at Worcester under poor conditions. The sides were well matched, and there was no score for some fifteen minutes The Bloxham forwards were more lively in the loose, and good passing by their three-quarters
resulted in a goal Immediately afterwards they took advantage of a dropped pass to score an unconverted try The School pressed hard before half-time, when the score was 8 points to nil They continued to press afterwards, and following a good rush Lavender went over from a lineout The try was not converted The School continued their efforts, but Bloxham managed to obtain one more try. The game was very fast and enjoyable in spite of the weather Result: Bloxham 11, School 3

SCHOOL v O.V CLUB
Played at Worcester on a snow-covered ground
Owing to the extremely inclement conditions it was agreed to play only twenty-five minutes in each half The cold wind and the wet ball were not conducive to good passing movements, but the O.V frequently gained ground in this way, the brothers Royle being especially dangerous The School forwards held their own fairly well, but the side as a whole were unable to cope with the fast O.V. three-quarters, and also showed a marked disinclination to fall on the ball This enabled the O.V to score fairly frequently, the only reply from the School being a try by Bryer after a good forward rush. Result: O.V. 24, School 3.

JUNIOR RUGGER
The 3rd game, from which the nucleus of next term's " Colts " XV will be taken, have again had the benefit of the expert coaching of Mr Bentley and Mr Strong, and show signs of producing quite a promising side It is hoped that matches with Warwick and Bloxham will be arranged for them, and with the aid of one or two of the younger members of the 1st game they should have a good chance of winning both
The 2nd game has shown signs of deteriorating into the refuge for " Old Crocks " which it was a few years ago, but the 4th game, ably instructed by Mr Ward, have thoroughly grasped the rudiments of the game
A notable innovation this term has been the introduction of a Kicking Competition, for a Cup kindly presented by the Headmaster This was won by Chappel's House, R Anstey carrying off the individual honours The incitement to.practice resulting from this has brought about a marked
improvementinthestandardofkickingintheSchool A juniorcompetitionwillbeheldnextterm * * *
