AsPresidentoftheClubatpresent,itseemsappropriatethatIshould writeashortintroductiontothisfirstOldVigornianClubNewsLetter.
IncommonwithmanyotherOldBoys'Associations,owingtothe financialstringencyofthetimes,itwasagreedatthelastsummerGeneral MeetingafterconsideringtheadviceoftheCommittee,toinnovatethisNews LettertosendtoallMembersinsteadoftheVigornianItwillcontainagreat partofthenewswhichisrecordedintheVigornianwhichwouldinterest OldVigorniansespecially
Thispolicywasthoughtpreferabletoraisingthefeesofjoiningthe Club,whichincidentallyarestillthesameasin1924
YourCommitteeinthepasthashadsomeconsiderableanxietyinkeeping thefinancesoftheClubonasoundbasisowingtothegradualriseinall expensesduringthelastthirtyyears,andatthesametimenotwishingtoraise theclubfees.
IthasalwaysbeenthepolicyofmembersattheGeneralMeetingstovote occasionalsumsofmoneytoanythingurgentlyrequiredbytheSchool,and thishasbeendonerecentlybothforCricketandtheRowing.Thisshould obviouslybeoneoftheobjectsoftheClub;butitisofcourseboundtoreduce fundsconsiderably,anyhowforthetimebeing.
Ishouldliketomentioninconnectionwithallthis,thatinordertokeep thefeesofjoiningtheClubstillattheirpresentlevel,theHon.Secretaryof theClubhasverykindlyofferedtodowithoutapaidSecretarysincethemuch regrettedretirementofMr.H.E.Nicholls,whichwillmeanagooddealof extrawork:hehasalsotakenonthepublicationofthisannualNewsLetter togetherwiththeassistanceofasmallsub-committee.Allthisshouldhelpto relieveconsiderablythefinancialposition.
AnyOldVigornianwhowouldliketoreceiveanyparticularcopyofthe Vigornianatanytime,canalwaysapplytotheHon.Secretaryenclosing postalorderfor2/6.

Mr.andMrs.KittermasterhavebeenattheSchoolnowforthelast eighteenyears;andduringthattime,theSchool,asmanyknow,hastaken tremendousstridesforwardinnumbersanddevelopmentsofallkinds,and itishopedthatallOldVigorniansandespeciallythosewhohavebeen associatedwiththem,willmakeeveryefforttobepresentattheAnnual SummerGatheringandDinneronSaturday,nthJuly,toshowtheir appreciationofalltheyhavedonefortheSchoolinthepast.
Itisobviousthatweshallhopetopresentthemwithsometokenof appreciationandwouldallwhowishtosubscribetothis,kindlysendtheir contributionsatoncetotheHonSecretary,O.VClub,ChoirHouse,King's School,Worcester,sothatwecanknowingoodtimewhatsortofformthis giftcantake

Ioncenoticedinaprospectusofawell-knownnorthcountrycathedral schoolalistofnoteworthyoldboys.ItwasimpressiveandIbegantowonder whatWorcestercoulddointhisrespect.Further,intheJuly,1942issueof The Vigornian (andIhavebeenmeaningtowritetoyouaboutthiseversince thatdate)Ifoundthissentence,'TheKing'sSchoolmaywellbeproudto addtothemanyfamousnamesofOldVigorniansthatofEdwardWinslow' Well,whoarethesefamousO.V.s?Winslowhasbeenunearthedlately; MacdonaldmentionsfourinachapterinhishistoryoftheSchool,butthere areapparentlymore.Couldsomeonewithatasteforhistoricalresearchcompile alistoffamousO.V.s,oreventwolists—oneofclassicO.V.swhoareimmortal andanotheroffirstclassO.V.swhoarecontemporaryandmaylatersinkinto oblivion?ThekindofO.V.Ihaveinmindforthesecondlistis,say,Jack Longland PeterJacksonmighthavebeenincludedsomeyearsagoforhis rowing,and,previoustothat,didwenotboastofagovernorofCyprus?

InconclusiontheHonSecretaryexpressedtheClub'sgratitudeto Mr.F.R.KITTERMASTERforhisverypracticalinterestintheClub;tothe Ladies'CateringCommitteeforsomeexcellentteas,andtoMrWFLANE forpreparingthewickets,whichweregardassuperiortoanyotherinthe district.

Inhisreviewoftheaccountsfortheyearending30thSeptember1958 theHonTreasurerstatedthattheClubhadgainedaprofitofabout£1010s andnowpossessedareasonablebalanceattheBankHewasalsooftheopinion thataReserveFundcouldbeinitiatedinthenearfuture.

Thisdampnesswasinviolentcontrasttowhathadgonebefore. The capacitycrowdwhichpackedCollegeHallhadheardseveralspeechesofhigh quality Asusual,theHallwasfilledtooverflowing Iftheschoolgets muchbiggerweshallsurelyhavetotransferSpeechDaytotheOdeon TheChiefspeakerthisyearwastheRtRevLM CHARLES-EDWARDS, BishopofWorcester.WealsowelcomedtohisfirstSpeechDayaschairman oftheBoardofGovernors,theDeanofWorcester,TheVeryReverendR.P.L. MILBURN.Asusual,itwastheDeanwho,aschairmanopenedtheproceedings. Afterwelcomingthevisitors,heremarkedupontheconnectionsofhisold College—WorcesterCollege—withtheCathedralofwhichhehadrecently becomeDean,andheproducedseveralamusingillustrations Inintroducing theHeadmaster'sreport,hepaidtributetoalltheworkthatMrKITTERMASTER haddoneduringthe18yearsofhisHeadmastership Heannouncedthatin recognitionofthis,theBoardofGovernorshaddecidedtooffertotheHeadmasteranextramonth'sholidayattheopeningofthenewschoolyearto givehimachancetogetawayfromallthedistractionsofschoollifeforawhile. HesaidthattheHeadmasterhadgratefullyacceptedthisoffer
TheHeadmaster,inhisreport,saidthatthestandardofworkofthe sixhundredboyshadbeenmaintainedthroughouttheyearandthatthenumber ofboysgoingtoaUniversitywasmuchlargerthanithadeverbeenbefore.
Hethenmentionedthefactthatseveralchangesweretobemadeinthestaff. 'Sam'Strongwasretiringaftermanyyears'servicetotheschool;MrDodd wasgoingtoPortsmouthGrammarSchool;MrJohnwasleavingtoimprove thestandardsofheavy-weightboxingintheU.S.A.;MrMarkswasaboutto becomeamasterpotterinsteadofapottermaster,andMrCrawfordwasgoing toendhisself-imposedexileamongtheSassenachsandreturntotheright sideofHadrian'sWall.Inaddition,Mr.PedderwasgoingtogiveupThe Hostel,althoughremainingonthestaff,andMr.KnightwasmovingtoThe Hosteltotakehisplace. Mr.Ballancewouldbethenewhousemasterof Chappel TheHeadmasterwentontosaythatonemoreretirementwasto beaddedtothelist—hisownHesaidthatthenextschoolyearwouldbehis last,ashewasretiringinJuly1959
Referringtotheoutwardandvisiblesignsofchangeintheschoolthe HeadmasterspokeofthegrowthtofullstatureofthenewWinslowScience LaboratoriesHesaid:"Lastyearwehadjustdecidedtogoaheadwiththe building.Iamgladtosaythatwiththeco-operationofthebankandwitha generousgrantwehavejustmanagedtocomeoutontherightside." He emphasisedthattherewasstillabankdrafttopayandthatcontributionsto thebuildingfundwouldstillbewelcome Parentswereinvitedtoinspect thenewlaboratorieswhichwerealmostcompleted Hecontinued:"We aregoingtobemagnificentlyequippedforscienceteaching,andthefiveyears spentraisingthemoneyhavebeenwellspentindeed Forthefirsttime,we nowhavemoreboysdoingadvancedsciencethanadvancedarts."Hesaid thatfrequentspeecheshadbeenmadebypoliticiansandothersurgingtheneed formorescientists.King'sSchoolseemedtobeansweringthatcall.However, hesaidthatthebalancehadtobekeptbetweenscienceandthearts. A disturbingfeatureoflastyear'scertificateresultshadbeenthelargenumber ofscientistswhohadfailedthegeneralpaper Scienceteachershadagreat responsibilityinseeingthatabalancewiththeartswasmaintained
Reviewingtheyear'ssporttheHeadmastersaidthat,asseveralnew masterswouldbejoiningthestaff,carehadbeentakentoensurethatthey werequalifiedtohelpinthecoachingofgames
ThankingtheHeadmasterforhisreport,theDeansaidthathewasin aquandaryaboutintroducingthemainspeaker,ashewasnotonlytheDean's ecclesiasticalsuperior,butalsofarbetterknownbythosepresentthanwas theDeanhimself.Lookingup"Bishop"inDictionariesandcatalogueshad directedhisattentiontochesspieces,toatypeofmulledwineandtoaheavy croppingpotato—noneofwhichdescriptionsseemedtofitthepresent circumstances Hehadthereforedecidedthatthebestthingtodowouldbe tolettheBishopspeakforhimself
Afterpresentingtheprizes,theBishopgavehisaddressHesaidthatthe wholepurposeofaboy'seducationwastomakeitpossibleforhimtograsp andappreciatea'sublime'experienceifthegoodGodallowedhimit He addedthatinourrathersophisticatedagewecongratulatedourselvesthatwe nolongerworshippedgravenimages But,infact,weworshippedGodsofa moredangerouskind—thoseofHollywood,orofadeitystuffedwithpromises ofadividendandaguaranteedwagepacket.Referringtoreligiongenerally, theBishopadvisedtheschooltoforgetwhatparentsandteacherstoldthem, andtoseekGodnotforexaminationpurposesbutforwhatheisTheBishop commendedtheeducationprovidedatKing'sSchool—"sogoodthatnationally wecannotdowithoutitorthemenitproduces."Hesaid:"Itdoesn'tmatter somuchwhetheryougetSchoolCertificateornotWhatdoesmatteriswhat youdowithitafterwards Somanypeoplegettheirideasatsecond-hand, fromtelevision,radio,ornewspapers.Youboys,however,havegottobeable toweighupsituationsandtodecidebetweenrightandwrongyourselves. Ideplorethemoderntendencyofspecialisation—menandwomenworkingand thinkinginseparatechannelsItisathingtobewaryof,andGodhelpusif webecomeanationofspecialists Howevermuchmanstudieshecannot hopetomeasureinfinityorcomprehendeternity."

Thisseasonwasaffectedbybadweather,permittingtheSchoolFieldto beusedonlyonce.ThenewgroundatBattenhalldidnotyieldthebenefit expected,asitwasmuchaffectedbytheweather.Theteamwasabletoget inmorepracticethanlastyearbutitwasstillnotenoughtogivethepolishto theteamtoholdsuchgoodsidesasSolihull.Thepotentialofthesidewas obviousthroughouttheseasonbuttheneedformorepracticeandmatch experiencewasveryevident Fewchangesintheteamwerenecessary;early intheseasonthedefenceprovedsatisfactoryandtheattack,althoughdeveloping later,washardworkingandthrustful Bythetimethelastgamewasplayed againstP.H.G.SEveshamthesidewasstartingtowelditselfintoanefficient unitandonefeelsthatafewmorematchesafterwardswouldhaveshown successfulresults
MATCHES
ItwasunfortunatethatthefixtureagainstP.H.G.S.Eveshamwascancelled owingtobadweatherasthisgamehadbeenmosteagerlyawaitedbytheside.
ForthenextmatchtheSchoolvisitedHanleyCastlePlayingonasloping pitch,DAVENPORTscoredalmostimmediatelyfromthebullyoffThiswasmost encouragingandtheSchooldominatedtheplayduringthefirsthalf The initiativewaslostinthesecondhalfwhenHanleyCastleputinsomedangerous attacks TheSchooldefence,playingwelltogether,managedtopreventthe scoringofanygoals.TowardstheendofthegametheSchoolagaintookup theinitiativeandthesecondgoalwasscoredbyHAZELDINE.
ThesecondawaygamewasagainstHartleburyonapitchmuchaffected byweatherTheSchoolshouldhavewonthisgamebutfailedtodosothrough lackoffinishing-offmovements Theapproachworkwasimpressivebutthe wingsdidnotmakeenoughoftheopportunitiesgiventothem.Theleadwas takenbytheSchoolwhenDAVENPORTscoredaftertheHartleburygoal-keeper hadmis-kicked.
