Kingsland News March 2014 Dear Parishioners Easter is late this year, let's hope that Spring isn't!! The beginning of March marks the beginning of Lent and there are soup and pancakes on Tuesday 4th March at Lunchtime at Lucs in aid of the hospice. Ash Wednesday follows hot on its tail and time for a spiritual health check. You may have heard of the 5:2 diet for the body......well there is the 221 check up for the soul. Come along on Ash Wednesday and find out..... or on any of the Sundays in Lent. Ethics is the topic for the Lent groups to be held in the Rectory. There are 4 sessions: three Wednesdays starting on 19th March and the last one is a Monday. How to make the right decisions on how to live..... 7.30 – 9pm. If you are interested in joining a group to talk about such things but can't do Wednesday nights please let me know and then we can look at different times and places in the future. Many of you came to the funeral service for Jill Probyn and I promised to pass on thanks from her sons to all who provided food for the “wake” after the service in the church. There are a number of plates and dishes that are still in the kitchen at the back of church so

please come and retrieve yours if you have left it. We will all miss Jill's presence in our community and give thanks to God for all her service on our behalf.....the village green, the history of the church, language lessons, music encouragement and visiting. All done quietly and with a sense of life..... an example to us all. There are a number of occasions during Lent in the lead up to Easter where events and services will be put on that are Benefice occasions.... Ash Wednesday being the first of these and that is here in Kingsland..... others of them will be in Aymestrey, Leinthall Earles and Eardisland and I hope you will make the effort and have the courage to travel to some of these. If you require a lift please do not hesitate to contact me and I will sort that for you. The 50p shop will be a service that the churches are to offer the children at school in the run up to Mothering Sunday. Bring 50p and there will a gift to take home for mothers all neatly wrapped and labelled.... However we need help with providing a selection of gifts …. do you have any smellies,

sweets or little gifts that would be suitable? There will be a box at the back of church if you can help with this. We have great links with the school here and on March 16th will be celebrating Education Sunday in church here in Kingsland at 11am. Do come and join us to give thanks for all that is good and to pray for all teachers and those involved in education. Finally we are looking to appoint a benefice administrator, someone who can be available for a few hours a week and work from the Rectory. Someone with IT, organisational and communication skills and has some understanding of the church. Perhaps that is you? The funeral of much loved villager Jill Probyn was a sad but uplifting occasion. It was the wish of Jill's sons that the generous donations of the congregation should be split equally between the Millennium Green Trust and SMAAAK. Each charity received £504. Many thanks to Jill's family and to all contributors. SMAAAK' s fund raising programme for 2014 continues with a mixture of high quality live music and art, courtesy of Arts Alive, and other fun events including the re-instatement of the legendary Kingsland Potato Growing competition and an out-of-the-ordinary Pub Quiz night. We will be shortly be taking bookings for… "Field Notes", Friday 28th March, 7.30pm at The Coronation Hall - using old maps of the region as their inspiration, Field Notes is a brilliant collaboration of specially commissioned music and art by renowned composer Howard Skempton and textile artist Matthew Harris, with music performed by four of the world-class Birmingham Contemporary Music Group. Kingsland W I Only about half of our usual attendance for our February meeting due to the weather! Our speaker Carole Dowding gave a talk on the brief history of makeup. She trained in Paris at Christian Dior and then worked for Charles of the Ritz. The ancient Egyptians used makeup using crushed beetles for colour. In 840 B.C. Jezebel had painted eyelids. The Romans used beeswax, olive oil and rosewater. In the 17th and 18th centuries both men and women used make-up from crushed beetles and powdered arsenic. In the 19th century ladies often made their own make-up but in the 20th century a market developed for ready made products. Francois Coty trained as a perfumier and his fragrance 'La Rose' sold out after a bottle smashed in a chemists shop. His perfume was marketed in beautiful Lalique glass bottles. Carole took us through the famous names of companies started in the early 20th century who are still with us today. Max Factor, who started up doing stage make-up for Clara Bow, Valentino and Jean Harlow, entered the domestic market in 1927. Elizabeth Arden made cosmetics acceptable in elegant society. Helena Rubinstein moved from Poland to London in 1908 and on to America in 1914. Estée Lauder started in business in 1935. In 1953 she launched Youth Dew and by 1984 was selling 150 million bottles. Some famous products still going strong are Nivea Cream (1900), Pond's cold cream, oil of Ulay and Max Factor Crème Puff. We were then given a little insight into the professional tricks of the trade. Altogether a very interesting talk!

New Kissing Gate Needed. There is a very old stile that is getting quite dangerous at the back of the church field, on the way to the river. Anyone that walks this route is in danger of getting injured as the stile is really not fit for purpose now. Therefore I am endeavouring to raise the ÂŁ300 that we need to put a new kissing gate in its place. I will be running a raffle until the beginning of March and it would be fantastic if you would support me by buying a ticket or two - prizes include a music centre, wine and a free MOT. County cross-country champions: Croft Ambrey Ladies! The Croft Ambrey ladies team has won the county trophy, after a gap of 20 years. Nicky Turvey, from Yarpole, was part of both winning teams 20 years apart. Sue Davies, Jo Marriott, Sam Harper and Irina Dale completed the ‘A’ team. Ruth Stafford, Kim Wood, Rachel Nelson and Elaine Rouse completed the squad. The men’s team took bronze against stiff opposition. There are five races between October and March, held in different places across the county and this is the 30th anniversary of the Herefordshire league. Croft is a small club, especially when compared to the two Hereford running clubs, so every runner helps towards the final result. On a couple of races this season we even fielded a

ladies ‘B’ team. For all club members, participation is a real achievement given all the other commitments of family, work and general living! If mud and hills are not your style, club members will be running the 5K (3 mile) road race in Hereford on 9th April at 7.15pm from Hereford’s Leisure Centre. Or why not join us for the club’s own 5 mile time-trial on April 22nd at 7pm, around the lanes of Leinthall Starkes? Contact Mike Blenkinsop for further details. There will be an Extraordinary General Meeting of the Kingsland Flower Show at the Post Office commencing 7.00pm on Monday 10 March 2014. The meeting is to consider and, if thought appropriate, amend the Constitution to allow all persons from the Benefice and nearby villages to enter The Show. At present only residents of Kingsland Parish and children attending the School, Pre-School and Nursery can enter The Show. As a result of dwindling entries in recent years, it is hoped this proposal will attract entries from residents of villages surrounding Kingsland, thereby boosting numbers. If you have any opinion on this proposal, please attend the meeting and air your thoughts.

The vice-presidentsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; luncheon was held as planned on Saturday, 8th February. The event was well-attended, with some faces from yesteryear appearing from various parts of the country such as Kent, Somerset and the London Area. Our President outlined some of the spectacular events during the past year, and thanked so many of the members that contributed to this. The scheduled 1st XV match v Sheffield Tigers had to be cancelled, the decision having to be made at 8 am for obvious reasons. This proved the correct one due to ground conditions. Numerous functions in the clubhouse coming up, but so much influenced by the weather. Gold Cup Day a sell-out!

Weobley Cricket Club Indoor Nets Weobley Cricket Club will field one and half teams again this year! Weobley 1st X1 will be in Division 2 of the Marches League. Because we have insufficient players for two full teams, we shall be providing players for Burghill & Tillington 3rd X1, which will play in Division 4 of the Marches League. Weobley players who turn out for this team will also be eligible to play for Weobley 1st X1 should their performances merit it. You will understand therefore that whether you are a good cricketer or a not-so-good cricketer, Weobley Cricket Club will be able to offer you a game of cricket in 2014 – and an inexpensive game too. Subscriptions in 2014 will be £10; match fees £6 for adults, £3 for under18s.

If you like the sound of what we have to offer, I would like to suggest you come to the club’s indoor nets. They are held in the sports hall of Weobley High School, on Sunday evenings from 6.30pm to 8pm, starting on 2nd March. The first net for any newcomer is free. Weobley Theatre Goers Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake was all that it was expected to be - and more! Our first surprise was to see Matthew Bourne, himself, on stage as he introduced us to the ‘Curtain Riser’. This was a group of schoolboys from Stratford and Birmingham, who had rehearsed together for the previous 4 Saturdays, with professional choreographers and producers, to put on their own interpretation of Swan Lake. Some had never danced or done ballet before. You wouldn’t have known it: they performed a wonderful few minutes of dance. This set the scene for a really spectacular ballet - with lots of humour and excellent characterisation and, of course, the male swans. In the middle of floods and horrific weather all round, this uplifted us all. Our last theatre trip before the summer will be to Malvern to see Eternal Love in Malvern on March 26th.

Nature Notes (12/2/14) I write these few lines looking out yet again on a rising river, pouring rain and near gale force winds. There are no Rooks in sight and I ponder where they go in wind conditions like this. Their selected nesting trees, Alders, are swaying violently! These trees have been left to grow for years due to a change in policy by the then Lugg Drainage Board – now ‘Environment Agency – main rivers’. They are gradually dying and starting to blow down, so restricting river flow. Is this progress? Even the Snowdrops are being battered in the wind, but bulbs are shooting everywhere, and the Crocus bed is a cheerful sight. Flood water entered the house through the tiled floor at 5 am on Sunday 9th February. It has happened before and will almost certainly happen again – only a few inches, not feet – carpets up –relax! Phone calls from Brisbane and Sydney cousins enquiring about the situation here, and saying they desperately want rain – it’s a strange world! However, a Song Thrush was singing the other day. Weobley Music Concert - Saturday 5th April 2014 Our menu for 2014 is big on quality: A small but appetising starter (20 mins) of Herefordshire’s own, well-seasoned, very local, free-range bluegrass band Pickin’ In The Kitchen. A hearty dish (50 mins) of Chris Moreton (a great entertainer and multiinstrumentalist rated as the UK’s best bluegrass guitarist and as playing truly world-class lead guitar) with a side dish of wife Wendy on bass. Finally, a very generous dessert (1 hour) of The Remi Harris Trio with, for your delight, a subtle jus of Welsh-born singer and recording artiste, Worcestershire-based Deborah Rose.
