Kingsland News June 2014 Dear Parishioners, What a wonderful month May has been, let's hope there is more good weather to come. There have been celebrations in church; weddings, baptisms and Cliff Davies' great achievement of having sung in Kingsland Church Choir for 70 years!! That is a life time of service and his lovely voice is still as good as ever! Well done Cliff and we look forward to many years more. We have also had to say goodbye to Ruth Fisher who is moving to Warwickshire to be nearer her family. She has been a bedrock to the church for many years....a Mary and a Martha and we are going to miss her. We wish her well in her new home and church and we are planning a visit in August to see her in her new home. If you would like to come with us, please let me know. It will be the last week in August. Saturday June 7th will see a Garden Party for the church at Westmead,the home of Bryan and Jackie Markham. All the Ps..... Plants, Produce, Pimms, …..... from

12 – 2.30pm............... Do come and enjoy time with friends and a chance to equip the garden and the larder. P is also for Pentecost and the following day (Sunday) we will be celebrating in church. The feast of Pentecost marks the birthday of the church and is one of the 3 great festivals on which everyone was expected to come to Communion – Christmas, Easter and Pentecost ...... did you know that? It is one of the few occasions we get out the red altar frontals....... for the fire that was kindled on that day and pushed the disciples out from their quiet upper room into the open, spreading the story of Jesus and marking the birth of the Christian Church! As this goes to print we will be enjoying the hospitality of Harvey and Rachael Pudge at Street Farm for Rogation Sunday..... so thank you to them for their generosity and kindness and I hope the weather is kind and we can enjoy the view across the valley. We have been awarded a grant to help us appoint an administrator for

the next two years, to work for 4 hours a week. There will be an advert for the post appearing very shortly , so if you know someone who may be interested please point them in my direction. It is also a time to reflect on the past season before planning for the future. It is very essential for players to relax, have a break from each other, and enjoy other activities. However, expenses continue to be created and the treasurer will be watching these. Cricket is under way with three sides playing, and the pavilion in full action. The other sections growing, with support from new members welcome. The name of ‘Luctonians’ well-known in many circles, aided by a wide circulation of ‘Lucsline’. Issue number 212 recently published – received worldwide. The committee is aware that the good name should be carefully preserved. R.W.H.

Branch Meetings. The change of date for our May meeting caused a few problems but nevertheless raised more than £60 for our funds. The next meeting is on 2nd June.

Ross Branch Events. Ross Branch is planning numerous events throughout the summer and autumn. Details are on our notice board.

Future Events. On Saturday 5th July in collaboration with the WI, we will be holding an open day at the Village Hall starting at 2.30pm. There will be 6 a-side football, rounders, skittles and amusements for the children. Anyone wishing to help should contact Val Davis. Our annual lunch at Gable Croft is on Sunday 13th July. We will be sending a “round-robin” to all members shortly with requests for tickets at £12 per head. Our newly introduced August draw and quiz night falls on the 4th August – 100 years since Great Britain declared war. To mark this event, we are expanding our normal evening, using the upper dining room at the Corners. Members are requested to bring along some guests to swell the numbers - more details next month. National Conference. The final agenda for the RBL National Conference is on our notice board. In particular, please look at the motion by Stamford Branch (page 14) which seeks details of the cost of “Pathway for Growth”, and voices concern at the impact the changes are having on Branches. I hope to have a report on this conference at the quarterly County meeting on Friday 30th May and will let members know the outcome. Armed Forces Day. A parade and church service will be held in Hereford on Saturday 28th June. Details are on the notice board and are summarised below: 2.20 Parade Assembly in Commercial Street High Town 2.40 March off to Cathedral 3.30 Service of Commemoration in Cathedral. (Those not marching to be seated by 3.10) After the Service, the parade marches past to High Town followed by refreshments at Sulva

Nature Notes (12/5/14) First Mayfly seen emerging from the Mill Pool on May 11th! What an amazing life cycle they have! I suggest you check it out. I learn from a keen fisherman that there is an abundance of them on the river Test in Hampshire, where stocked Brown and Rainbow Trout grow to 10lbs. I did not hear the cost of a day’s fishing there! A bitter cold wind of the past few days has not deterred birds singing, including a Thrush – a wonderful sound. Swallows are inspecting prospective nest sites – any open door or window, preferably with a dark interior. I haven’t heard ‘the’ Cuckoo yet but there is a report of one in the Shobdon area. No Spotted Flycatcher seen either. I was delighted eventually to find the Dipper’s nest near the Mill Wheel. It was very well concealed and the parents are very reluctant to be seen approaching the nest with feed for the young. Rooks are very noisy as the young grow. I learned that May 10th was the accepted date to shoot the young as they hopped on near boughs by their nest, before taking to the wing. I have often heard of ‘Rook Pie’ being a delicacy – somehow don’t fancy it. Five two-thirds grown Grey Squirrels of one family trapped near the garden. A Jay seen up to no good with a distressed Blackbird trying to divert its attention. Bluebells in the local woods a wonderful sight – more than ever apparently. Shobdon Hill and Bircher Common just an amazing show, and all free! Apple Blossom in full bloom – no serious frosts. Lets await the outcome of it all. No apologies for quoting the third verse of the late Geoffrey Bright’s

poem ‘Hereford is Heaven’ written in 1947. When Bluebells cover Dinmore And Lambs on Bradnor play The Cuckoo comes to Orleton Fair To tell us it is May And if there be a Paradise It surely must be here, When songs of birds and flowers, mark The Springtime of the year. R.W.H.

Kingsland Flower Show This is a reminder that the show will be held in the Coronation Hall on Saturday 9th August 2014. The Schedules are enclosed with this edition of the Kingsland News. However, if for some reason you are not in receipt of a Schedule, copies are available at the Village Post Office or can be obtained from the Secretary, Caroline Southgate. Additional copies of the entry forms can be obtained similarly Many of the regular items are retained in the vegetable, floral and produce classes so we hope you will be busying yourselves in the garden and kitchen in readiness! There is also an interesting range of items for the Junior age groups including prizes for A handmade Christmas Card, the best of which we hope to have printed and available for sale at a later date. The subject for the Open Junior Section this year is A Decorated Hat, so put your thinking caps on for a good design. A reminder for those successful winners of cups at last year's Show, we would ask you to return them to either Carol Davies (9 Orchard Close) or Jean Barbour (Village Post Office) by early July please. The Steering Group is busy organising the ‘The Big Consultation Event’ at the Coronation Hall on June 7th and 8th 10am - 4pm (see the newsletter poster!).

What is written in the Neighbourhood Plan will have to be taken into account by Herefordshire Council, along with other factors, when deciding on Planning Applications. So, it is very important that you give your views on proposals for future development, so that we end up with the Neighbourhood Plan we want. There will be time to have a final say before submission. So please come along to help decide how we want the village and parish to look like and develop over the next 15 years. We’ll also be inviting parish businesses and other organisations to the

Kingsland Churchyard In response to the comments we have received about the chuchyard and in order to help those who work to maintain this wonderful space on our behalf, the PCC and Churchyard Committee would like to draw your attention to the following . extracts from the Diocese of Hereford Churchyard Regulations 2008: i. ii. iii.

All graves should be levelled after one year The planting of perennials, shrubs and bushes is not encouraged. Artificial flowers are inappropriate and should be discouraged. Exceptionally Remembrance Day poppies and Christmas wreaths may be placed on graves. After one month, the PCC nay remove dead and artificial flowers to keep the graveyard tidy. A flower vase may be incorporated in the base of headstones, but separate vases must not be placed elsewhere on the gravespace; unless no headstone is to be erected.

Holding a St Michael’s Hospice Big Tea party is as easy as one, two tea! Pick a day this July, buy or bake some cakes and pop the kettle on. Then ask friends, family, neighbours, colleagues or customers to join you for a Hospice fundraising party. Every penny raised from a Big Tea party will go straight to caring for the thousands of people in Herefordshire and the surrounding counties who benefit from St Michael’s Hospice services. Last year, Big Tea parties raised over £8,000, which was enough to fund meals in our In-Patient Unit for three months. This year we’re hoping to raise even more. You can help your Hospice by holding a Big Tea party anywhere: at home, work or school, in the garden, village hall or park. Pixies

The First Kingsland Brownie Pack is a member of Girlguiding UK and this year is celebrating 100 years of Brownies in the UK. All Brownies have the opportunity to earn “The Big Brownie Birthday Challenge Badge” with one of the challenges to inform the local community about “How wonderful it is to be a Brownie”. Here are ideas from the four “Sixes”

Every Tuesday, the 1st Kingsland Brownie Pack of girls aged 7-11 have a meeting at Kingsland School. In the meetings the Brownies have fun playing games and doing activities. Some of the favourite games are Winking Murder, Shopping Basket and Chinese Whispers. We also enjoy singing, especially funky songs. We explore different topics to complete badges which help us to learn more. DON’T DELAY, ENROL TODAY!

Elves We enjoy enrolments because we get cakes and sandwiches which are made by those Brownies doing their hostess badge. We meet every Tuesday in the school hall from 6 – 7.30 pm. We do lots of exciting activities. When we do work we earn badges. Gnomes We all join together on a Tuesday night to take part in great activities. We cook delicious cakes, play epic games, have fun activities, take part in super sleepovers and have great Brownie Adventures. This year we are going to a PGL centre for the week-end. Leps Every Tuesday night a girl group called Brownies meet up at 6 – 7.30 pm. We like to play games, especially Winking Murder, Shopping Basket and the Chocolate game. We also do activities outside like Easter Egg Hunts, Parachute Games, Cat and Mouse, Fruit Salad and many other games. We go on Sleepovers and Brownie Adventures. This is what Brownies is about. COME AND JOIN THE FUN!!!!!

Quality without compromise

Sponsored ‘Ride and Stride’, September 13th 2014. Herefordshire Historic Churches Trust has been raising funds through the annual Ride and Stride for over 20 years. It has supported Kingsland Church with our restorations. This is a great opportunity to raise money for our historic churches and have a lovely day cycling, walking or welcoming visitors. Last year Vida Thorpe from Aymestry rode her pony! You can visit as few or as many churches as you like. As a previous cyclist with my husband and three daughters, I found it fascinating to see such diverse and lovely churches. It is amazing what you see from a bicycle, and it certainly gives you a new insight to our lovely county. For further information please contact me. Petanque in Kingsland The Angel's pétanque team have made a reasonable start to the summer season. Of the four matches played , we won two, drew one by a very narrow margin and lost one. One match was very nearly called off – we arrived at the Bullring at Kingstone in a downpour, so spent a pleasant half-hour in the bar getting to know our opponents! Eventually, after much sweeping of the pistes, play started and we were treated to a rainbow during play. And we won, so the rainbow must have brought us luck. The drawn match was at a new venue, the Temple Bar at Ewyas Harold. This is only “The Barristers” second season and it was a good match – the score in the 3 games we lost was 13-12. You can't get h closer than that. Modesty prevents me details of the games we won!! Pétanque is a sociable and fun game. If you are interested in playing (no experience is necessary), please give our Captain Paul Blake a ring on 07870 391953.

Yarkhill Field to Fork Festival â&#x20AC;&#x201C; 7th June

Saturday 7th June is the date for a new local festival celebrating the county's agriculture and the amazing array of food and drink produced here. The inaugural Yarkhill Field to Fork Festival will showcase some of the best produce available in Herefordshire, including cider, liqueurs, wine, bread, ice cream, cheese and confectionery and will feature educational and fun activities for all the family. Aiming to engage and educate consumers on the provenance of food, the importance of buying local and growing and production methods, there will be various activities taking place throughout the day, such as cooking demonstrations, meet the producers, competitions, children's activities and tasting opportunities. Producers already signed up include Peter Cook's Bread, The Strawberry Stop, Ledbury Real Ales, Pixley Berrys, Haygrove, Just Rachel, Once Upon A Tree and Wilce's Cider, Chilli Zoo, AJ & CI Snell, Olivers Cider, Monkland Cheese

Dairy, Monkhide Wines, Cake Aspirations, Wye Valley Granola, Gwatkins Cider, Broadfield Court Wines, amongst others. Local chefs Callum McDonald from Verzon House, Matt Slocombe of The Crown in Woolhope, Rayeesa of Rayeesa's Indian Kitchen and Billy Pallett of A2Zest event catering will demonstrate recipes using the best of the counties produce. Kingsland W I Mr Andrew Offer of Whyle House Lamb was our speaker on the 14th May. He and his wife run a small scale farm producing lamb which they sell directly to the public via Farmers' Markets and at food festivals. The also sell directly from the farm and on line. The next food festival will be at Shobdon in June. The lambs are Welsh cross Texels. Their costs are much higher than the big producers because they are small scale and also because the animals mature more slowly and the meat is hung for at least ten days. Mr Offer demonstrated the butchery of a lamb carcass into the various joints and also boned and rolled some cuts. They also produce mutton which is gaining in popularity.

Our next meeting will be on the 11th June and the speaker Mrs Anne Goodwin on the History of the Radnor Valley. All are welcome to attend. Pat Hughes Aymestrey Film Club Aymestrey Film Club will be showing “Nebraska” on Sunday 1 June at 7.00pm. This contemporary black and white film tells the story of an elderly man who, thinking he has won a lottery, sets off on a journey across four US states with his son to claim the prize. Doors open at 6.45pm. Entry is £5 per person. Home-made ice-cream and popcorn will be on sale before the screening.

Herefordshire Nature Launches a Social Enterprise

After nearly two years of success as a project based with Herefordshire Nature Trust, Orchard Origins is now moving into an exciting new phase and is

establishing a Community Interest Company (C.I.C). Our commitment remains to improve well-being while working in traditional orchards. Volunteering with Orchard Origins is an invaluable way of supporting the C.I.C and experience first-hand the benefits of being in some of Herefordshireâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s beautiful traditional orchards. Over the coming months we will be out and about pruning, providing volunteers with the chance to hone existing skills or learn new ones. Other opportunities include practical experience of juice and cider making, harvesting, and mistletoe management. Pruning and Traditional Orchard Management is a new service we offer to private orchard owners. After an initial site visit, we draw up a unique management plan for the orchard. This may involve restorative pruning, formative pruning, new planting and mistletoe management, but really does depend on what is needed to ensure the orchardâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s survival. If you are interested in this service please do get in touch as our rates are reasonable and we are fully insured. We are very proud to share with you that in the last 18 months we have delivered 2,500 volunteer hours, improved the biodiversity of thirty traditional orchards around the county and created some delicious premium quality products â&#x20AC;&#x201C; apple juice, cider, perry, chutney and preserves.
