H

orsham District Council is a lead member of the district’s Safe and Well Partnership and in order to plan and implement key priorities, the council needs to engage with residents across the district to gather your views on crime and disorder. To this end, a short survey has been created, which should take approximately 10 minutes to complete. Topics in the survey include: • how safe you feel • whether you have been a victim of a crime • what you feel are the main causes of crime • what you feel the Safe and Well Partnership should be focusing on

Please mention HORSHAM PAGES North when responding to adverts

Your answers will enable the Partnership to respond to your concerns by prioritising the key areas identified by you, as residents. The online survey will be live from Monday 6th January and can be found at www.horsham.gov.uk/crime-survey. If you would prefer a paper version, please email communitysafety@horsham.gov.uk or call 01403 215173. The deadline is Sunday 16th February and all completed surveys will be entered into a prize draw for a £100 gift card that can be spent in local shops. The survey is anonymous but if you would like to be entered into the prize draw, you will need to leave either a phone number or email address so you can be contacted.

REFLECTIONS ON INCINERATOR INQUIRY

T

he Incinerator Inquiry which follows a legal framework is not the easiest of environments in which to ask residents to come and express their concerns. The Planning Inspector, Ian Jenkins, was as accommodating as possible in making people feel comfortable, but if residents did give evidence they had to consider if they would accept cross examination from Britaniacrest's barrister in order to add more weight to their views. The process is not meant to be adversarial but inquisitorial. However, despite this many members of our community did come forward and made their feelings known to the Inspector about the impact that building this incinerator would have on their daily lives. We were pleased that the Inspector set aside a day for site visits with all interested parties to personally view the local area. He was also making other visits on his own both during day and night to inform his decision. This was reassuring and much appreciated. Another vital part of the Inquiry process was the opportunity for Ni4H and residents to take part in discussing what planning conditions should apply, if the incinerator were to be approved. Ni4H were assisted in round table discussions by our planning expert, Maureen Darrie and were able to bring forward proposals from research into conditions from other incinerators and to present a reasoned best practice case. Over the past two years there have been two consultations regarding this incinerator application and the response from the residents of Horsham on both occasions has been an overwhelming objection to the development. It is by far the largest reaction to any planning application I have seen in my 14 years as County Councillor. During the first consultation 5,500 residents rejected this application either by direct objection to the planners or by signing a petition. Since the Appeal application was made another 2,237 people have added their names to a second petition which was presented to the Planning

Inspector at the Inquiry. This is an overwhelming NO vote. It is local democracy at work and we asked the Inspector to give this the weight it deserved. Ni4H and the local community has been at a huge disadvantage to Britaniacrest in bringing our representations to this Inquiry. Given the issues involved here are very technical and complex, they have been able to use their considerable resources to buy themselves experienced experts and representatives to make their pitch. On the other hand, Ni4H are not experts and it is not a professional organisation - it is a Community Group attempting to understand and reflect the concerns of the community. Ni4H has had to work hard not only in developing its case, but also through fundraising events, public donations and pledges of financial support, to collect significant funds so that we can afford a barrister and experts, to represent local residents. Without this massive community effort over the last 12 months, it would have been impossible to give full weight at the Inquiry in presenting the excellent case we have and the powerful reasons we have for rejection of this appeal. We are confident from many submissions made by residents, that the Inspector will have understood the concerns that local people have about their future wellbeing if the incinerator comes to this area, the wholesale change of character that would be brought to our market town, how it would be out of keeping with its surroundings and the massive structure would overwhelm existing buildings in the surrounding area and would have a significant adverse impact on our beautiful views. We hope these heartfelt views and the more formal input from Ni4H and WSCC barristers will sway the Inspector to reject this Appeal. We remain optimistic for a positive result. Any suggestion that the Ni4H campaign was misleading is not so. In fact, Ni4H learned from other Community Groups labelled in this way how to avoid

Ni4H

doing just that. Ni4H has taken great care over the content of press releases, social media publicity, newsletters, printed material and discussions with the public to remain measured in our approach to our campaign, opposing the development of this incinerator. Finally, we want to say a big thank you to everyone who has backed this campaign in their many different ways and to Ni4H Barrister Nick Grant from Landmark Chambers, Ni4H Experts Maureen Darrie from GP Planning Ltd, Only Solutions LLP and UKWIN. Through the hard work of Ni4H and the amazing local support we have given ourselves at least an even chance, where without it we would have had no chance, in putting our case forward so strongly for rejection of the Appeal. We now await the Inspector’s decision probably in the first quarter of 2020. Peter Catchpole, Chairman Ni4H County Councillor Holbrook

BIN COLLECTIONS OVER CHRISTMAS

T

here will be no collections on Christmas Day, Boxing Day or New Year’s Day, therefore collections of recycling and waste will be delayed by two days. Collections crews will be working additional Saturdays to catch up on 28 December, 4 January and 11 January. Garden waste collections will be suspended over the festive period and will resume on Tuesday 7 January. Any extra resources will be deployed to help with the additional recycling materials generated over the festive period. Dog bins and litter bins throughout the District will be emptied on 24, 27, 31 December. Thanks to our residents recycling efforts, the Horsham District has achieved a recycling rate of over 50%, but we can do more. Please mention HORSHAM PAGES North when responding to adverts

Remember to reduce your waste and recycle this festive season! Did you know one in five bags of food shopping are just thrown in the bin? Why not set yourself a challenge to reduce food waste? For hints and tips go to www.lovefoodhatewaste.com No foil or glittery wrapping paper in your bluetop bins for recycling – do the scrunch test. If you can scrunch it and it doesn’t spring back it doesn’t contain plastic and can be recycled. Christmas cards, corrugated cardboard boxes, cardboard tubes and plastic trays can all be recycled in your blue-top bin. Consider buying rechargeable batteries instead of disposable ones for children’s toys. And remember to always dispose of used batteries at an appropriate recycling point such as at your local supermarket – please do not put used batteries in your rubbish bin. JAN/FEB 2020

Revive & Thrive Director, Russell Downing, said “We are excited to begin working with the business community in Horsham. We are already impressed at the quality of the business offer in the town and are keen to explore ways of making it even better for all those who use it.” To date, the BID has been driven by a steering group drawn from businesses around the town. Steering Group chair, Willie Hamilton, said “we are aware of improvements that BIDs have brought to other towns around us and we are keen to keep Horsham one step ahead of the rest. The best way to do that is for businesses to work together for the benefit of us all.” Businesses should sign up to come along to this free event via an Eventbrite registration page, http://bit.ly/horshambidmeeting and can find out more about BIDs and the Horsham BID at Revive & Thrive’s website: www.reviveandthrive.co.uk/current-projects

HORSHAM MUSEUM & ART GALLERY

HELP SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL MUSEUM

T

he Friends of Horsham Museum & Art Gallery have recently launched a new fundraising scheme, Adopt an Artefact, asking you to support Horsham Museum in their endeavour to maintain a crucial cultural and historical centre for the present and future generations of Horsham and its District. Please help Horsham Museum & Art Gallery to care for its unique collection by adopting one of our chosen artefacts for a year - for yourself, or as an unusual gift. There are 30 museum exhibits to adopt at the standard rate of £25 for adults or £10 for children. Full details of the artefacts available and the adoption process can be found on the museum website www.horshammuseum.org/getinvolved/friends/Adopt-an-artefact. Artefacts include a suit of armour, Attwater’s Cricket stumps, bat and ball, Willoth the dragon (top right), Pentacycle or even John Haigh’s comb (above). You will receive an Adoption Certificate and your name in the gallery where the object is located unless you wish to remain anonymous! The money raised through this scheme helps finance vital projects within the museum, such as the conservation of the museum’s collections, supporting the very popular and free children’s Art Zone as well as enabling new projects to be undertaken for the benefit of our community and for the purchase of important objects. HORSHAM COMMUNITY FRIDGE

HELP CREATE A COMMUNITY FRIDGE Fare Divide’s vision is to save perishable foodstuffs from landfill and to inspire healthier communities by forging give-and-take partnerships making available surplus food to all without judgement and stigma. Anita Rosser is working with Sarah Renfrey, founder of Fare Divide, to set up a community fridge in Horsham. Anita explains the concept below and how they need to raise £2,040.

Sarah Refrey promoting Littlehampton’s fridge.

S

arah and I are incredibly passionate about reducing food waste and preventing perfectly edible food from going to landfill. I personally think it's scandalous that tonnes of food is thrown away every day in the UK, particularly by retailers and supermarkets, or it's reduced before the Best Before Date even though the food will remain perfectly edible for a week if not longer. I often buy packets of tomatoes that have been reduced and they are perfectly edible a week later. How does a Community Fridge differ from a Food Bank? People usually refer to food banks as an emergency stop gap solution, and are vital for an increasing number of people. Generally non-perishable food items are given out, and food bank users are not always at liberty to choose what they eat, although each food parcel is tailored to each household’s needs. Community Fridges exist to reduce food waste and foster a spirit of sharing and mutual support within a community. They are often open more regularly and offer a source of fresh

good quality food surplus for everyone. In many cases the most frequent items moving through the fridge are fruit and veg. They operate on a trust basis and are not means tested. The aim of the Horsham Community Fridge project is to set-up and launch a Community Fridge in Horsham. Community Fridges are social sites of food education and sharing. They are housed in publicly accessible places making fresh food that would otherwise be wasted freely available to the community. Surplus perishable food is donated by local businesses, supermarkets or allotments and taken by anyone who will use it. Our aim is to raise £2,040 to be spent on a

CAGNE

GATWICK AIRPORT SEEKING GROWTH

G

atwick Airport is seeking growth even though the Airports Commission was unanimous in selecting Heathrow for a new runway. They are seeking to increase aircraft movements of the main runway by 60%, going from 285,000 to 340,000 by 2032. This will not have the full parliamentary scrutiny or even your scrutiny as it is in keeping with government policy, ‘to make best use of current facilities’ and so Gatwick looks to grow without any restrictions or consultation. The Secretary of State is the official that has the power to stop Gatwick’s unsustainable growth. CAGNE has pointed out to local authorities that this growth alone should be called in by the Secretary of State due to the huge burden on our roads, railway, affordable housing, healthcare, schools, lack of amenities or consideration of climate emergency. Post election we ask you to write to the Secretary of State to call in the growth plan from Gatwick’s main runway. Growth from the main runway will not be part of the Development Consent Order (DCO) unlike the emergency runway (a second runway); We believe 60% increase in aircraft movements will be predominantly from the main runway with 40% using the emergency runway totaling some 390,000 aircraft movements a year by 2032. Lack of any funding to meet the huge increase in migrating workers into areas currently with low unemployment; lack of affordable housing; lack of healthcare and school prevision and lack of surface access. And a substantial increase in aircraft noise day and night with one runway The growth does not stop there, Gatwick are also perusing using the emergency runway to n

the north of the main runway as a second runway. It cannot be used currently in conjunction with the main runway, as it would be unsafe so the emergency runway will have to be re-built. We feel this is therefore constructing a new runway and not in keeping with Government policy as above. Gatwick expansion with two runways – a criminal increase of flight movements, 390,000, which equals a significant increase in passengers, 74m, and nearly one million tonnes of extra carbon a year. Gatwick Airport is seeking the approval of this via a planning process - Development Consent Order (DCO) - and we expect Gatwick to formally apply for this early 2020. This will leave a short period of time to register an interest and prepare a barrister and experts to defend the communities all around Gatwick from this significant growth. To challenge this DCO we require funding and so if you are able please donate via our website www.cagne.org We are being advised by Leigh Day, London Solicitors who are well versed in opposing DCO applications, environmental issues, and have already appointed a barrister. We need to be ready for Gatwick’s campaign launch in the New Year with another roadshow of events to raise awareness and lobbying of local authorities and Members of Parliament. To continue to oppose Gatwick’s expansion we need your support, in writing, to your local authority that may be looking to approve Gatwick’s growth, your newly appointed MP, the Secretary of State and donations to fund experts and a legal team. Be ready to campaign to oppose Gatwick Airport growth plans spring 2020. Keep updated by joining the CAGNE mailing list at www.cagne.org

HORSHAM DISTRICT HOMES

FIRST AFFORDABLE HOMES DELIVERED

A

t a Horsham District Council Cabinet meeting on 28 November, councillors approved business cases for the development of new permanent affordable homes in Billingshurst and Slinfold. These homes will be the first to be delivered by the Council’s new affordable housing company: Horsham District Homes. Horsham District Homes was created in August 2019 with the objectives of: • giving a boost to the existing delivery of affordable housing in the District • making the best use of section 106 sums, and; • providing a financial return to the Council for further reinvestment in housing and in District facilities. Horsham District Council has helped deliver more affordable homes to local people in the past three years than any other council in Sussex with over 750 built through existing council policies. The creation of Horsham District Homes is set to further build upon this achievement. Horsham District Council Cabinet Member for Communities and Wellbeing Councillor Tricia Youtan, said: “I am delighted that we are now starting to develop new affordable permanent rented homes owned directly by the Council, as a result of the creation of Horsham District Homes. “In the Horsham District our existing policies have a good track record in the delivery of affordable homes. We shall continue with this approach but going forward with Horsham District Homes we will add to affordable housing numbers and help even more local people who are on our housing register into suitable affordable accommodation.” Following a model seen in other councils, Horsham District Homes as a company, is separate from the Council but wholly owned by it. It is led by Council appointed directors but other staff resources – such as legal, financial and administrative support, come from within the Council.

THE PROBUS CLUB

TRIPS, OUTINGS AND THEATRE VISITS

P

robus Clubs aim to provide opportunities for companionship amongst those who have retired from a busy working life and are looking to meet with people from similar backgrounds. Probus Clubs began to be established in the mid 1960’s, after Caterham Rotary Club in Surrey saw the need for an organistion for retired businesspeople. An initial meeting took place at a local hotel when some 42 people came along. The idea proved popular and interest grew quickly such that are now over 200 clubs in the United Kingdom and Ireland with numerous others in Europe and beyond. The Probus Club of Horsham and District, the first to be set up in the Horsham Area, meets on the first Thursday of each month between 10.00 am and 12.30 pm at Roffey Sports and Social Club. At each meeting, after a lively business session to discuss forthcoming events, previous activities and news from members, a speaker will give a talk or presentation. Earlier in the year a fascinating presentation was made by a former criminal who is committed to helping young people to steer away from a life of crime and more recently the club has been able to learn more about the History of Imperial Airways and to understand more of “A Policeman’s Lot”. After each club meeting an optional lunch is arranged for members, currently held at The Barn at Rookwood Golf Course. Club members with, most importantly, their

wives or partners enjoy trips, outings and theatre visits and these are a recipe for its ongoing success. Events over the recent past have included a visit to the Bank of England a trip to Reading Museum to see a reproduction of the Bayeux Tapestry followed by a boat trip on the Thames, a guided tour of Petworth House and a local visit to the Wings Aviation Museum at Balcombe ending with afternoon year at High Beeches. Forthcoming outings include a guided tour of Watts Gallery at Compton near Guildford, a Club Coffee Morning coffee morning a concert by the Black Dyke Brass Band at The Hawth and a ten pin bowling competition. In addition to the regular meetings, trips and visits, a Club walk organised and led by a club member, takes place most months, invariably concluding with lunch at a local hostelry. The Club’s current President is Professor Alcuin Blamires and Club Secretary is Ernie James who can be contacted on 01403 261848 by those seeking further information. Horsham and District Probus is a vibrant and active organisation of up to 50 men. There are a limited number of vacancies currently available and if anyone wishes to enquire about Membership of this or indeed any of the four other Probus Clubs in Horsham, they should contact the Club Secretary. THE HEAT IS ON FOR FIREWALK

S

t Catherine's Hospice is getting ready to heat up Horsham with its second ever Firewalk! Now, the local charity is looking for brave soles to come forward and face the flames to raise funds for terminally ill people in their community. St Catherine's is looking for 100 or more fearless fundraisers to put their bravery to the test and walk

barefoot across 15 feet of red hot embers. Taking place on Friday 13 March 2020 at 7pm, in the Carfax, the thrilling Firewalk isn’t for the faint hearted! People will be in safe hands as the event is held in partnership with UK Firewalk. And their expert staff will share the secrets of successful firewalking with everyone who takes part before they face the flames. Alongside the Firewalk, there's also a Lego brick walk for under 18's who are keen to prove they’re not bricking it and tackle their own challenge to raise money for their local hospice. Anyone who has stepped on a stray Lego brick before might argue that this challenge takes more guts than the Firewalk itself! Arron Trott, Events Fundraiser at St Catherine's said "We're really excited to bring such a great challenge to Horsham. We hope lots of you will brave our first Horsham Firewalk or Lego walk and help us make the night a sizzling success! It's a brilliant thing to be able to say you've hot footed across fire for your local hospice, and we can't wait to celebrate with all our amazing firewalkers. Your efforts have never been more important because at the moment we can only care for one in three local people who need hospice care. But in the future, we want to be there for everyone facing death and bereavement. This is only going to be possible with your support." Think you can take the heat? Then don't delay, get your space today! Places are limited so book early. Fire up and register before Friday 17 January 2020 to quality for an early bird registration of £20. After 17 January it's £25 to register. To take part you'll also need to raise at least £150 sponsorship. Registration for the under 18's Lego walk is £10 and brave brick walkers are asked to try and raise £50 each. dam Streeter, General Manager, says:“Autumn is very special at Leonardslee, with magnificent displays in the woodland gardens as the leaves turn, and the colours reflected on the seven lakes in the valley. We have rebuilt the paths, so there are many great walks, in any weather, and dogs on leads are welcome too. We are planting thousands of bulbs and introducing snowbells and other plants to bring the main flowering season forward, to enjoy earlier in the year. “Also we have an extensive new programme of events in the autumn and winter months and planned throughout 2020. ‘Shopfest’ on November 17th is a showcase for an inspiring collection of art, crafts and handmade goods by independent business pop-ups exhibiting lifestyle, fashion and homeware. “A further highlight in the gardens is ‘Leonardslee Illuminated’ - with woodland trails lit up for a festival of light, sound and festive cheer. This runs from December 12th to 15th, and 19th to 22nd.” Popular woodland areas to visit in the gardens to see the autumn colours include the American Hickory trees, with fluorescent yellow leaves;

28

Kasura or Candy Floss trees, whose unusual ovalshaped leaves change to a light orange colour and produce a strong fragrance of burnt sugar; Black Gum trees, a brilliant red and yellow; the North American oaks that tower over the garden; and the Swamp Cypresses with their dazzling orange colours, found along the edges of the lakes. Leonardslee Lakes and Gardens opened to the public on April 6th 2019 after a decade’s closure. The opening followed two years’ major restoration work on the Grade 1 Listed gardens and on-site facilities by Penny Streeter OBE who acquired the estate in 2017. The extensive garden collection of plants from around the world dates from 1888, when Sir Edmund bought Leonardslee from his in-laws. From this period, parties were invited to visit the estate, which continued in the ownership of the Loder family until 2010. Leonardslee Gardens and Estate is open every day except Christmas Day, 9am to 4pm autumn and winter opening hours. The rock garden and three paths will be closed until mid-December due to essential renovation work: www.leonardsleegardens.co.uk

APPROVAL FOR NEW SCHOOL

H

orsham District Council is pleased to announce that planning permission has been granted for a new school at the north of Horsham development site. The permission is the Reserved Matters application (ref DC/19/1730) to assess the details of the school, including its design and layout (above). This follows outline permission for the development of the north of Horsham site in 2018. The new school has been brought forward by the Department for Education in consultation with Legal & General, who are the master developer for the whole of the site. It will be a new Bohunt school and will provide a nursery for 50 pupils, a primary school for 420 pupils; including a reception, and a secondary school for 1200 pupils. The school will also include a separate sports building, multi-use games areas and sports pitches. Works are expected to start on site this spring 2020.

Horsham District Council Cabinet Member for Planning and Development Cllr Claire Vickers said: “I am delighted that we have achieved this key milestone in the development of a new school for Horsham. “Horsham District is in urgent need of school places and the new school will go a long way to addressing this need. “Currently, Bohunt Horsham are in temporary accommodation at Hurst Road, Horsham. It is anticipated that they will move into their brand new accommodation at the North Horsham site in September 2021.” Sebastian Balcombe, Senior Land and Planning Manager at Legal & General, added: “We welcome approval of the planning application for Bohunt Horsham School, which is one of the many benefits of the sustainable new community at land north of Horsham. GARDEN VIEW

WITCH HAZEL

J

anuary is a great time to plant deciduous trees and at this time of year a tree with added winter interest is always a welcome sight. Enter the witch hazel. These lovely trees with their citrusscented spidery flowers are widely sold in garden centres as container-grown plants Look for plants with a number of evenly distributed well-placed branches and avoid those showing signs of stress, damage or disease. Ideally choose an open, sunny position in the garden. They also work well if planted next to pathways and doors where you can enjoy their gorgeous scent on wintery days. Avoid very shady sites though or the plant may become straggly Witch hazels need free-draining soil that doesn’t dry out in summer. A light soil mixed with plenty of organic matter, such as well-rotted manure or compost, is best. They will also grow on heavier clay soils but make sure that as well as digging in plenty of organic matter you ensure good drainage by planting on a slight mound, about 25-30cm (10in-1ft) high and 1m (3½ft) in diameter. The only soil witch

30

JAN/FEB 2020

hazels won’t tolerate is a shallow chalky soil. And make sure you don’t plant them out if the ground is waterlogged. Witch hazels grow slowly but eventually make large spreading shrubs. They aren’t fond of pruning so make sure you leave enough space around your plant for it can develop naturally. Make sure they are wellwatered throughout the first couple of springs and summers as they take a long time to fully establish and lack of moisture can cause flowers to drop. They don’t need regular feeding but applying a top dressing of a general in late winter or early spring will help young plants to grow. Happy New Year and Happy Gardening!

exceptional examples of their species because of their enormous size, great age, rarity or historical significance. The Grade I Listed gardens are set within a steep valley in the 240 acre Leonardslee estate, and feature a series of seven interlinked lakes, originally created to power iron smelting in the 16th and 17th centuries. Victorian plant collector Sir Edmund Loder purchased the

estate from his parents-in-law in 1889 and planted extensive collections of Rhododendrons and Azaleas and many species of trees, and also introduced gazelle, beavers, kangaroos and wallabies. The gardens were sold by the Loder family and closed to the public in 2010. No further maintenance work was carried out until entrepreneur Penny Streeter OBE purchased the site in 2017. There followed nearly two years’ extensive restoration work, with a team of some 30 gardeners, until the opening in April 2019. It has been described as the biggest garden restoration since the Heligan project in the 1990s. Leonardslee attracts visitors internationally to see its outstanding displays of rhododendrons, azaleas, camellias, magnolias and bluebells, with many rare specimens collected from all over the world by the Loder family.

WEST SUSSEX PHILHARMONIC CHOIR

ANOTHER SPLENDID CONCERT

W

hen Stephen Hope introduced to the audience the recent concert at St Mary’s Parish Church on 16th November by the West Sussex Philharmonic Choir, he explained that the first two items were contemporary choral works by American-based composers. “In this progressive style of music not all the harmonies are what we are used to; any sounds you hear which appear discordant are intended by the composer in order to create atmosphere and effect - or most of them at any rate”. Another feature of these works is their linguistic spread - Latin, French, Spanish and English. The compilers of the concert programme had the presence of mind to provide translations to satisfy the curious listener. The two works in question were Serenity by Ola Gjeilo, his setting of the Latin text O Magnum Mysterium; and Nocturnes by Morten Lauridsen, who took his text from four poems (in French, Spanish and English) with ‘Night’ as the common link. The choir coped confidently with each work, handling ‘a capella’ passages with aplomb; they made a very pleasing sound and to the listener all discords were obviously intentional. There followed vocal solos by the baritone and soprano soloists who were to appear later in the second half. Lawrence Broomfield performed two songs by Faure and Felicity Hope regaled us with songs by Quilter and Schumann; both were accompanied on piano by Stephen Hope who then played Gnossienne No 1 by Satie. This delightful interlude paved the way for the choir to close the first half with the Ave Maria from Rachmaninov’s All Night Vespers, which was sung in Russian, under its Russian title , Bogoroditse Devo. After the interval we were entertained to a bravura performance of Faure’s Requiem, opened by a deafening chord on the organ, played by David Moore. This work is full of great melodies

and is therefore often treated almost as light music; chorally speaking, this performance had a gravitas which underlined the solemnity of what a requiem mass is all about – it was powerful and stirring. The two solo vocalists played their part in performing their melodic contributions with a thoughtfulness that matched that of the choir’s. Yet again the West Sussex Philharmonic Choir demonstrated its versatility in skilfully handling choral works of differing styles; its members clearly enjoy their singing and the audience shared that enjoyment. Richard Rowley

NOTHING TO WEAR?

I

s your wardrobe full but you have nothing to wear? Have you noticed how some people always look effortlessly stylish? Looking good is all about understanding what suits YOU. Iris Apfel said ‘‘What’s my style is not your style, and I don’t see how you can define it. It’s something that expresses who you are in your own way”. You don’t have to be rich or famous to use the services of an image consultant, just a desire to make the best of yourself. Are you creative like Lady Gaga, more natural like Kate Winslet, or perhaps classic styles are more your thing? Style Consultations consist of completing a Style Personality Questionnaire to discover the styles that you feel happier wearing and indicate what you would like to achieve. I also establish your proportions and body shape so that you understand which clothes shapes and fabrics fit. Colour analysis determines which colours of clothing and makeup harmonise with a person’s skin complexion, eye and hair colour. Colour is a clever way to instantly transform your look positively. We’ll develop a coordinated wardrobe within your budget, so you get maximum usage from it. You’ll dress with confidence whatever the occasion and reduce frustration looking for the perfect outfit. My gift vouchers make a great Christmas present - a gift with a difference, a gift of confidence! I sell vouchers for the full value of the consultation or any value from £25.00. NEW YEAR

YOUR 2020 VISION FOR 2020

H

indsight is a wonderful thing. We often reflect on the past year and mourn chances we didn’t take or connections we didn’t make. Instead of looking longingly backwards, perhaps 2020 is a good year to develop your vision for the future so that it’s…well…20/20! Review your goals — short and long-term Are your everyday activities helping you to accomplish your short-term goals? Are you working on meaningful projects? Make sure at least some of your daily activities help you to accomplish your short-term goals, and that those short-term goals can build to let you accomplish larger goals and objectives. But don't be a slave to your goals. It's okay to change directions and shift deadlines. January is a great time revaluate. Are your long-term goals from six months ago still relevant to you today? It can be helpful to write down your goals using pen and paper, and then hang them in a place where you can see them. This acts as a visual prompt to remind you and inspire you during the day-to-day grind. Nurture relationships Sometimes friendships and family relationships get placed on the backburner when we're busy. Are there If there friends and relatives in your contacts list who you haven’t spoken with lately? Use this season to catch-up, reconnect, and nurture the relationships that matter. Request a planning meeting It could be with your boss, or your partner! When

40

JAN/FEB 2020

you think about the next year — do you see yourself staying at the same job? If so, do you want to be considered for promotion or a transfer? Would you like to plan a big trip with your partner, or start a family? With your boss you might mention projects you’d like to lead, qualifications you'd like to study for. With your partner you might want to talk about joining a gym together, planning a safari, or taking up ballroom dancing. These discussions are useful in both your work and your private life. They can help you understand points of dissatisfaction in your work or relationship and give you the clarity you need to explore a change. Invest in yourself There’s a difference between being comfortable and being complacent. Try stepping out of your comfort zone and take an online course, sign up with the Open University or night classes at college. Try out a yoga class or a massage, or simply go away with a friend or a partner to a spa for a few days. Reflect on lessons learned January is not all about new beginnings. It's nice to think about all you accomplished during 2019. What did you learn? What did you achieve? A lot probably happened in the past 12 months, but life moves so fast that too often we don’t take time to reflect on all we’ve learned. Take note of your discoveries and think about ways you can apply those lessons with intention as you move into the new year. Please mention HORSHAM PAGES North when responding to adverts

BOOK REVIEW

BOOK FOR AVIATION ENTHUSIASTS

E

xperienced pilot Steve Ford (above) from Billingshurst has launched his debut book - 20 West: a journey through six decades of turbulent change within aviation. Sharing the adventure, joy, and - on occasion tragedy, that makes aviation one of the most fascinating industries to be a part of, 20 West reflects the diversity of the aerospace industry. It’s not only an absorbing read for anyone with a passion for aviation, but also for the next generation looking to embark upon a journey that has no final destination. 20 West follows Steve’s journey through aviation, from an ‘unmin’ child travelling the world on standby, training from an apprenticeship to a jet engine specialist, to his distinguished career as a long-haul commercial pilot. It also presents an insider’s history of the last 60 years of the industry, giving readers a fascinating insight into the ways commercial flight and the corporate giants that dominate it have evolved over the years. Packed with captivating stories from both above the clouds and down on the tarmac, it’s a must-read for anyone who’s ever wondered what really happens on the other side of the cockpit door. On making the decision to write and publish his enthralling career story, Steve said: “The reason for wanting to write this book was to provide ‘a record’; to attempt, as accurately as possible, to present a view from within the aviation industry during a period of monumental change. It spans six decades, stretching from propeller-driven

transport aircraft to composite, fly-by-wire and wide-body double-decker aircraft, plucked from the pages of science fiction. “Over the years, I have probably worked with and flown with hundreds if not thousands of pilots, and one of the biggest drivers for me wanting to write this book was not because it is about me, but because it is about them. It will also allow those who have absolutely no idea what it is like to spend a lifetime in aviation to get a sense of what it looks, feels and smells like to be embraced by such a career. It is a way of life that wraps itself around you and enters every pore as you fall within its envelope.” 20 West is available in paperback (£8.99) and ebook format (£2.99) on www.amazon.co.uk For more information or to contact the author visit www.20WestBook.com

SUSSEX GREEN LIVING

HORSHAM CLIMATE CAFE LAUNCHED

O

n Saturday 7th December 2019 in partnership with the Horsham Quakers Sussex Green Living (SGL) launched the Horsham Climate Café. It will take place on the first Saturday of every month 2pm until 4pm in the Quaker Meeting House, Worthing Road, Horsham, HR12 1SL (opposite Sainsburys car park) after the morning’s Horsham Repair Café (10-1pm). At the Climate Cafe people can meet informally and talk about climate change, eat delicious homemade cake, have a hot drink and join in the conversations about problems and solutions. You can come once or every month. Due to demand from many young people living in Horsham District SGL want to provide a relaxed space where they can come together and share their climate concerns and actions. Initially this space will be for children and young people (age 11 and upwards). SGL hope it will be led by the pupils and supported with adult facilitation and mentoring. SGL know it can be difficult to talk about climate change with friends and family, so Climate Cafés are designed to provide a space to do just that. SGL’s longer term vision is to explore larger premises for the Horsham Repair Cafe and the Horsham Climate Café to run alongside each other, working with other Horsham partners. With larger premises SGL might include: • Environmental petitioning – telling people about the most important petitions, their aims and impacts. SGL will encourage people to sign the petition(s) during their visit to the climate café. • Energy – sharing ways to save energy and reduce fuel poverty. Using SGL’s cost comparison and clean energy site they can help people switch their electricity suppliers for their homes and businesses often saving them money. Or people can use SGL’s Please mention HORSHAM PAGES North when responding to adverts

site from the comfort of their home. As of December 2019 at the Horsham Repair Cafe SGL will be offering fuel poverty and energy saving advice thanks to a ‘CES Warming Communities’ grant. Learn more here www.horshamrepaircafe.org.uk/ energy-advice/. • First green steps – or ‘Green watchers’. It’s similar to Weight Watchers where SGL help people take their first green steps, encouraging at least one green action a month. SGL hope they will come back month after month to be supported and monitored as they transition to a more sustainable life. • Climate Forum – young people working together to share ideas, helping give them a voice and support activity and in collaboration with Fridays for Future, Parents for Future and Parent Pledge. • Science behind climate change – if visitors want to learn more about climate change science, experts will be on hand to talk to them, suggesting reading and films to develop their knowledge. There are seven Climate Reality Leaders in West Sussex, all trained by the former US Vice President Al Gore along with leading climate change scientists who are part of the Climate Reality Leadership Corps. Carrie Cort, the founder of Sussex Green Living trained with the Climate Reality Leadership Corps in Manila, Philippines in March 2016. • Local campaigning groups – Representatives from groups like No Incinerator for Horsham, CAGNE (Communities Against Gatwick Noise Emissions) and Extinction Rebellion Horsham will be welcome, but unlikely to attend every month. ill Southern and partner John Cobbett won Horsham Bridge Club’s annual Binney Trophy on 18th November. Thirty pairs contested the annual “play with an expert” event. The victory for Gill, a second-year student, was also a resounding success for Horsham’s teaching programme. Second and third-year year courses resumed in September. The next beginners’ course starts with a free taster session on Thursday 9th January, so you can see if Bridge is for you. Horsham Bridge Club hosts sessions in its East Street premises every weeknight plus two afternoons. New members and visitors are always welcome. More information: www.horshambridge.co.uk

HOW I BEAT TYPE 2 DIABETES When his diabetes doctor suggested he should share how he put his diabetes into remission, John Spring went one better, he wrote a humorous book about it.

I

’ve now been in remission from type 2 diabetes (T2D) for eight years, so I guess I must be doing something right. Being in remission means that T2D isn’t damaging me anymore. The newly diagnosed will have been made well aware of the longer-term havoc it can do to their bodies. Unless, when they were told, they put their fingers in their ears and started humming, “La, la, la, I’m not listening”. Which is exactly what I did for several years. 5% of the UK’s adult population have been diagnosed with T2D, and another 1.3% don’t know they have it yet. By the year 2035, 10% of us will be type 2 diabetic. That might make the recently diagnosed feel a little better, as there is some safety in numbers, but the NHS isn’t too keen on the prospect. New patients may not be feeling any immediate effects of T2D, so it becomes easy to be complacent. You can liken it to a mild acid flowing around your body, slowly eating away at your nerves, your organs and your eyes. It is the end of this slow production line of diabetic damage that the NHS is now contending with. I’d read about rapid weight loss having a high success rate in putting T2D into remission and the NHS is now trialling liquid-based diets of 800 calories per day. There’s also bariatric surgery, but it isn’t infallible as a patient’s bad eating habits can find ways around it. Likewise, you probably don’t want to survive on liquids for the rest of your life, especially if they don’t contain alcohol. I devised my own practical regime for losing weight fast. The most positive benefit of this workable approach was that I learned how to avoid temptation by becoming the master of my own food. I also learned how to fit exercise into my busy life. These are the lessons that have kept me in remission. Please mention HORSHAM PAGES North when responding to adverts

John Spring before and today (right).

I started by identifying the heavy hitters in my diet. I then developed workarounds to drastically reduce my consumption of those. I also preprepared my own breakfast and lunch, thus avoiding the calorific temptations lurking in coffee shops and lunchtime sandwich bars. My home cooked dinners featured healthier ingredients and I soon realised that there really is no such thing as a low-calorie takeaway. They are all evil. I discovered convenient exercise by walking set routes every day and I built up to being the world’s most unlikely runner. After four months I had lost four stone and my blood sugar came down from 60 mmol to 42mmol (48 mmol is the diabetic threshold). Most importantly I’d also equipped myself with the knowledge of how to maintain that weight loss. The low-calorie liquids or the surgeon’s knife may well kick T2D into remission, but they’re arduous procedures to undertake. Staying in remission is also hard work, but that has been made easier for me by using a new lifestyle to beat this lifestyle related disease. LIGHT AND LAUGHTER

H

orsham Museum & Art Gallery is delighted to be hosting a new exhibition, “Light and Laughter” by local artist Cherry Parsons. Cherry was born and bred in Horsham. In her youth she dreamt of studying dress design at college, but for various reasons wasn’t able to go. Cherry went on to channel her creative passion into her own boutique before becoming a fulltime mother. Cherry’s dream of higher education became a reality when she accompanied her eldest daughter to her interview at Northbrook College, Horsham. After a meeting with the Head Tutor Cherry was offered a place to study alongside her delighted daughter. Cherry has exhibited work through The Farlington Art Group run by Rosalind Sprey. She also accepts commissions and has produced artworks which are displayed at Sedgwick House and Springfield Park. Having joined Horsham Artists Open Studios, Cherry has also held successful Open House exhibitions. Working mainly in acrylics or oils, Cherry enjoys creating portraiture, seascapes and landscapes. Her work incorporates light, reflections, water or humour. The amusing new range of artworks that capture characterful seagulls provide Cherry with a mental rest from the concentration of her other

artwork and make her smile whenever she sees them. Having spent much of her time caring for children, parents and beautiful grandchildren, Cherry is now revelling in having the time and space to indulge her passion. Light and Laughter will run from 8 November 2019 to 3 January 2020 in the Watercolour Gallery. Cherry’s original artworks, mounted prints, and a range of greetings card will be available to purchase for the duration of the exhibition. BOOM AND BUST: HORSHAM AFTER THE GREAT WAR

T

he first decade after the First World War was one of great change throughout Britain, and Horsham was no exception. A new exhibition at Horsham Museum and Art Gallery, Boom and Bust: Horsham after the Great War, will look at the developments and events that took place during the 1920s, and how they affected the town and the people that lived here. After 4 long years of war, on 11th November 1918 the notification that an Armistice had been signed arrived in Horsham, via telephone. Word quickly spread around the town that the war was

over, and the streets buzzed with excitement and rejoicing. After the initial celebrations Britain entered a period of adjustment. In Horsham around 420 men aged 16-50 had been killed, a significant number for this small community. After the war there was a widespread desire to get back to normal. By 1918 people had been desperate for peace, yet the reality of the post-war world was one of continued international conflict, economic stagnation, disrupted trade, and social unrest. The early 1920s saw increased leisure time, increased wages, cheaper goods and major changes in fashion and social permissiveness. The later years of the decade, in contrast, saw the General Strike of 1926 and the economic crash of 1929. It was certainly a time of great change and many contrasts. The wealth of items on display in Boom and Bust: Horsham after the Great War from the Museum’s collections that date from the 1920s

help to demonstrate some of these developments, and highlight what life was like for the people of Horsham at the time. Boom and Bust: Horsham after the Great War will run from 9 November 2019 to 11 January 2020. For more information see www.horshammuseum.org Horsham Museum is open Monday-Saturday 10am – 5pm, free admission.

utaneous and renal glomerular vasculopathy (CRGV) is also known as Alabama Rot after a similar disease in Greyhounds in Alabama in the 1980’s. It is characterised by ulceration of the skin, usually the lower part of a dog’s legs, but can also affect the body, face, tongue or mouth. CRGV is caused by damage to blood vessels in the skin and kidney resulting in tiny blood clots forming in the vessels and blocking them, leading to tissue damage. Skin lesions typically appear three days before kidney failure develops, but can occur up to ten days earlier. Not all dogs develop kidney failure, but those that do require intensive management and many do not survive. CRGV is rare and similar skin lesions can develop for many other reasons. If your dog develops a skin lesion book an appointment to see your vet, if they are suspicious of CRGV they may run blood tests as certain changes are suggestive of the disease. Unfortunately the only way to definitively diagnose the condition is microscopic examination of kidney tissue post mortem. There were 122 confirmed cases of CRGV with skin lesions and kidney failure between November 2012 and January 2018, from many different counties across the UK. A seasonal distribution has been identified with over 90% of cases between November and May. The cause is currently unknown although research is continuing. An environmental cause has been suggested and owners are advised to bathe dogs after a wet or muddy walk. Tel: 01403 791011. www.maltmancosham.co.uk

in many cultures. Chicken soup or bone broth-based soups are a good choice as they can reduce the symptoms in the throat and nasal passage. Even during the winter months, it’s still important to stay hydrated with warm and cold fluids. Vitamin C and zinc – these nutrients are especially helpful as they may prevent and shorten the duration of cold symptoms. Both zinc and vitamin C support the immune system, so it makes sense to increase the intake of both over the winter period. Vitamin C is not only found in lemons, limes and oranges but also in leafy greens, broccoli, peppers, kiwis and blackcurrants. And for zinc, you can turn to egg yolks, beef, ginger, sunflower and pumpkin seeds, yeast and seafood. If you do catch a cold, apart from increasing your intake of some of the above, you can try some additional natural remedies which may help you recover quicker. Cut out refined and simple sugars – sugar suppresses the function of the immune system, so make a conscious effort to limit or even eliminate any sugary foods such as biscuits, chocolate and sweets when you are having a cold. Post War Europhia 9th Nov 2019 to 11th Jan 2020 This unusual exhibition will help answer the question by revealing what went on when the bullets stopped and peace had a chance. Alongside the exhibition a new book will be launched by local author Gary Cooper: Collyers Horsham Grammar School casualties in two World Wars. A Flock of Sparrows – celebrating the life of Dr Geoffrey Sparrow; a comic genius 21st Dec 2019 to 22nd Feb 2020 Dr Geoffrey Sparrow arrived in Horsham 100 years ago, setting up in practice. Along with his medical skill he brought great artistic talent and flair for capturing life as lived in the District in the 1930-60s. His genius was capturing in a few strokes, on the back of napkins, envelopes and the more formal painting, the humour of life. He follows in the tradition of Rowlandson, but without the cutting edge.
