Five Fab Reads Out In April Whether you’re longing for a Parisian getaway or simply want to indulge in a comforting slice of wartime London life, April’s book releases are sure to sate your literary appetite. • Other People’s Children by R.J. Hoffmann Touching on one of the most delicate subjects of human nature, this moving debut follows a young couple whose fertility problems lead to further heartache when a child they plan to adopt is reclaimed by its teenage mother.

• Instinct by Jason M. Hough New York Times bestselling author Jason M. Hough brings us this intriguing and heart-stopping thriller which takes place in the kind of American backwater town where anything can happen, and does.

Exploring the complexities of a close family, they must make agonising decisions in the name of love. Published by Simon & Shuster on April 6

It follows officer Mary Whittaker as she does her best to unravel several highly unusual incidents. It soon becomes clear that the townsfolk are losing their survival instincts and that Mary must fight to uncover the truth before she loses her own. Published by Skybound Books on April 6

• Paradise, Nevada by Dario Diofebi Steeped in the feverish neon wonder that is Las Vegas, this heart-stopping tale has all the thrills you would expect from a high-stakes poker setting, with the surprising addition of depth and compassion for the four characters who are willing to risk everything for the ultimate slice of the American dream. Eloquent, comedic and bristling with energy from Diofebi, himself once a professional poker player. Published by Bloomsbury Publishing on April 6 • Kisses and Croissants by Anne-Sophie Jouhanneau Detailing everything one would expect from a love story set in the City of Lights, including divine Parisian pastries, languid afternoons strolling through art galleries and of course, stolen kisses in the shadow of the Tour Eiffel, this is the ideal read for anyone who is longing for a continental getaway. Published by Delacorte Press on April 6

• The Last Bookshop in London: A Novel of World War II by Madeline Martin Set in August 1939 as London prepares for war when Hitler’s forces sweep across Europe, Grace Bennett’s realised dream of living in the city doesn’t quite meet up to her expectations as she finds her day-to-day life blighted by bombings, blackouts and bunkers. However, she quickly realises that her role as a humble bookseller may be just what the local community needs to find solace and light during a period where London was perpetually doused in darkness and death. Published by Hanover Square Press on March 2

HELP RAISE FUNDS FOR HOSPICE husband Ken passed away under St Catherine’s care. In only two days, Wendy smashed her fundraising target, and donations continue to roll in. RECIPE

Ingredients (makes 12)

Chocolate Peanut Buttercups

• 1 cup (175g) of chopped chocolate • 2tbsp coconut oil • ½ cup (120g) peanut butter • 3tbsp sifted icing sugar

Introduction If you’ve ever tried the shop-bought version of these, you’ll know what a dreamy combination chocolate and peanut butter is, but unlike the big brand ones, these little beauties contain only a few ingredients (with a vegan option) making them less of a guilty pleasure and more of a nutritious treat.

Top Tips

Method 1. Begin by placing 12 paper or ƙĿŕĿČūŠĚ ČîŒĚ ČîƙĚƙ ĿŠ î ŞƭIJǛ Š tray, then melt the chocolate and coconut oil either in a bowl set in a pan of boiling water or by heating and stirring intermittently in the microwave. Pour approximately half of your chocolate mixture into your paper cases so it covers the bottom of each one. Place tray in the fridge for 15 minutes. 2. Mix the peanut butter and

icing sugar in a separate bowl until they’re thoroughly combined. Spoon your mixture evenly between your cases being sure to leave a little space around the edge for the chocolate to drip down.

• To make these cups vegan use a high-quality dark chocolate with a cacao content over 85%.

3. Drizzle your remaining chocolate over the top of your cups. Add any decorations to the top before placing in the fridge for an hour or so to set.

• Use crunchy peanut butter for added texture.

ȟ GūƑ î ŕĚƙƙ ƙDžĚĚƥ ǜ îDŽūƭƑ ŕĚîDŽĚ out the icing sugar.

• Feel free to add a blob of jam in the centre, or decorate the top with cacao nibs or a white chocolate swirl.

GARDENING

Common Scents How to design an aromatherapy garden

For many, the true delight of our gardens comes in the scents and aromas present; and these are celebrated to such an ĚNJƥĚŠƥ ŠūDž ƥĺîƥ ijƑĚĚŠȹǛ ŠijĚƑĚē enthusiasts have begun styling aromatherapy gardens, with an absolute focus on fragrance. Here are our top seven tips for getting started: ~s/ ȹ ƑĚîƥĚ ēĚǛ ŠĚē îƑĚîƙ The trick is to match likeminded aromas. So in one area perhaps start with essences that are invigorating and energising – think peppermint, lemon balm, rosemary, jasmine and thyme. Perhaps you could even plant a lemon tree next to a table, enabling then breeze to awaken zestiness from what is a beautiful looking plant. In another, perhaps quieter area of the garden, explore the calming varieties available to you. Here you’ll want lavender, chamomile, bergamot, scented geraniums and even roses. ¹Ø~ ȹ ¡ŕîŠƥ DžĿƥĺ ēĿƙƥîŠČĚ Your aromatherapy garden DžĿŕŕ ǜ ūƭƑĿƙĺ îƙ ƥĺĚ ƙĚîƙūŠƙ progress, so leave space IJūƑ ƎŕîŠƥƙ ƥū Ǜ Šē ƥĺĚĿƑ ūDžŠ personalities, aiding their movement with walls, beds and trelliswork.

¹O¤// ȹ ċƑĚîŒ ĿŠ ƎŕîNj Add in breaks using rocks, stepping stones or wood so that you can move between areas that retain their own personality. G~À¤ ȹ 'ĿIJIJĚƑĚŠƥ ƥĿŞĚƙȡ ēĿIJIJĚƑĚŠƥ ǜ îDŽūƭƑƙ Try to experience your garden at different times of the day to sample its full glory. The morning dew will lift some smells and essences in a completely different way to the midday sun. Similarly, as the seasons progress, you’ll notice plants coming into their own, while others move into the background. GT×/ ȹ ¬ƥîNjĿŠij ĿŠ ƥūƭČĺ When walking through an aromatherapy garden, let your hands brush against plants and ǜ ūDžĚƑƙȡ ƑĚŕĚîƙĿŠij ĚƙƙĚŠČĚ îŠē creating a wealth of scented sensations in your hands.

So if transporting your senses to a calm place is the intention, place things around you to make that possible – that means a relaxing chair, a table on which to place a drink, and perhaps even the calming trickling ambient sound of a pond waterfall or water feature. Your aromatherapy garden will be all the better for the additions you add that truly make it a place of peace and comfort. ¬/×/s ȹ ¡ĿČŒ îŠē ŞĿNJ Šē Ǜ ŠîŕŕNjȡ ēūŠɄƥ ċĚ îIJƑîĿē ƥū pick and transport your herbs and aromas indoors. The very basis of a garden is its ability to replenish and regrow, and if you can move smells and scents to the house itself, your outdoor space is providing for you inspiration, peace and splendour for the whole home.

¬TÝ ȹ ēē ƥū ƥĺĚ ĚNJƎĚƑĿĚŠČĚ Having an aromatherapy garden is to create a space that feels free, relaxed and, more than anything else, comfortable.

DOPAMINE DANGER New evidence suggests we may need to be that bit firmer when it comes to limiting our kids’ access to phones, tablets or video games, with researchers exploring the link between screen time and addictive behaviours. Every generation of parents face their own set of unique challenges when it comes to raising well-rounded and intelligent children, but for today’s mothers and fathers the advent of the internet and the ever-growing ubiquity of electronic personal devices poses unprecedented problems. Anyone born in the Eighties will remember all too well the family squabbles over the television These days, there are more screens than people in the average UK household (AND outside of it), transmitting a never-ending array of (often dismal) content. We are in a whole new frontier when it comes to today’s technology, and although it’s tempting to let your child while away a rainy afternoon playing Candy Crush on your phone, if you notice them becoming irritable or frustrated, there’s a good chance that the pacifier is becoming the problem, and this is where dopamine comes in.

motivated behaviour, providing a special kind of buzz that a healthy brain learns to seek in moderation. And yet it also the same high you associate with drugs, or from when placing a coin into an arcade machine. Dopamine feedback loops are now widely recognised as a side effect of screen time, as the non-stop stimulation triggers the reward centre part of the brain leading to a constant longing for more. For children this can lead to a perpetual state of hyper stimulation where agitation and mentally exhaustion cause real problems with learning, social interaction and emotional regulation. On a small scale this leads to restless bedtimes, but on a bigger scale it can cause havoc with a child’s development.

The trick is in finding the balance. That means strict limits on how long your children can spend online, as well as leading by example by making sure you, as a parent, aren’t making your mobile phone the centre of your universe. Counteract the sedentary screen time with outdoor fun, exercise, real-life social interaction and good quality downtime that doesn’t involve that distracting blue light, and never use screen time as a reward. Finally, remember the ultimate antidote to screen time: boredom. Without boredom there is no creativity, and depriving our children of imagination would be the biggest crime of all.

But dopamine is good, right? It’s the feel-good chemical that floods our brain when we fall in love, or eat ice cream or stroke a puppy. It promotes reward-

HEALTH

Sleep Easy Why getting your head down may be the best thing you can do for your health and wellbeing. Sleep: the science We all know how valuable a good night’s sleep is… or rather, how bad we feel when we don’t get one! The value of rest is recognisable in the fact we spend a third of our lives in bed. And sure enough, most of us can reel off a good number of the benefits of sleep – sharpness, mood enhancement, the fending off of low moods, a lowering of blood pressure, better immunisation, improved memory, stress reduction and even maintaining of body weight.

The environment First, consider what’s around you. Studies have shown that smartphones and device usage is on the increase and it’s the ‘blue light’ emissions from these that can delay the release of sleep-inducing melatonin, as well as resetting the body’s internal clock (circadian rhythm). Moving away from screens earlier – scientists recommend at least an hour before you plan on going to sleep – will limit the bouts of LCD exposure which excite brain stimulators, therefore helping you maximise sleep efficiency. Remember as well the need to moderate room temperature, as well dimming lighting and removing excess noise around you.

To advertise call 01403 588618 CRAWLEY PAGES South

And while the act of sleeping is more important than anything you may consume in the lead-up to it, it goes without saying there are certain food and drink items that will hamper effective rest. While alcohol may enable you to drop off quicker, it’s disruptive to your sleep in the second half of the night, not least if you are in a state of dehydration. Consider as well the impact sugar, carbonated drinks and caffeine might have on the body at a time when it is trying to wind down. An old favourites such as Horlicks, with a soothing malt content, has been scientifically proven to aid rest.

The routine… and a plan Scientific studies have shown that regularity and repetition is the important where sleep is concerned. Your body feeds off continuity and structure in its waking hours, so why should things be any different when it comes to sleep? Sleep doctors have begun recommending a trial week of ‘regular as clockwork’ bedtimes, with long rests and the adoption of healthy habits. They then invite people to see if they feel improved in all those physical and psychological aspects. In many cases, the results have gone to show why getting your head down may be the best thing you can do not just for your health and wellbeing, but your sanity too. APRIL/MAY 2021

Is the government’s Green Homes Grant as generous as it first appears? The UK government have just announced an extension to their Green Homes Grant, the scheme introduced in October 2020 to offer homeowners in England (including landlords) up to £5,000 in vouchers in order to cover the cost of energy improvements, with the only stipulation being that individuals would have to cover the cost of 20 per cent of the work done. The end date of the scheme is now March 31, 2022. As ever with these types of projects, there is a small amount of red tape to negotiate. Firstly, note a stipulation for qualifying grants to be paid on secondary improvements, only after primary improvements have been made. The scheme is designed to predominantly

push insulation upgrades (solid wall, cavity wall, underfloor, loft or roof etc), and low-carbon measures (such as hybrid heat pumps, solar thermal systems and more). Secondary improvements include draughtproofing, triple glazing, energy efficient doors, appliance and hot water tank thermostats, and smart-heating controls. The good news for homeowners is that almost all qualify, even if they are landlords and even where newbuilds are concerned. There is even an extended grant of up to £10,000, with no 20 per cent contribution required, for vulnerable groups. While the Green Homes Grant is only for homeowners with property in England, there are similar schemes for those in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. For more information, search Green Homes Grant on gov.uk.
