Chilli and bell peppers can both be grown in a greenhouse border, in a sunny spot in the garden or on a sheltered spot on the patio, although a greenhouse or conservatory will give you a heavier and earlier crop. HEALTH
Don’t Suffer In Silence Being able to hear is fundamental to our ability to communicate. If we can’t hear, we can’t respond to others nor speak clearly or judge our pitch – try talking to someone wearing headphones and they’ll shout back at you. But like most of our senses we take our hearing for granted and only notice it if it starts failing. Most age-related hearing loss is not noticeable until later life, but deterioration begins much earlier. You start to lose some of your range as early as in your twenties. Constant exposure to the noisy modern world gradually wears away at the ‘nerves” in our ears. ‘ What can you do to protect yourself? Even if you already have some loss, looking after what’s left is imperative. Be aware of situations and environments that can damage your hearing such as: • Playing loud music through headphones and earphones • Attending loud live music concerts – even some classical concerts • Using simple DIY equipment such as hammers and power tools • Day to day activities such as riding a motorcycle (wind noise – not the engine noise as you might think) or even driving in a car with the window down (some truck and taxi drivers have more pronounced hearing loss in their right ear, nearest the open window) • Recreational activities such as shooting So be aware when there may be damaging levels of noise present, and protect your ears if there is. Inexpensive foam earplugs can be purchased from DIY stores and some chemists. Most concert venues have free earplugs available, and although they rarely offer them to you on arrival, there’s usually a good supply behind the bar. What can be done? It’s really not necessary to – literally – suffer in silence. A simple trip to a specialist hearing centre or audiologist will mean your hearing is tested and assessed, usually free of charge. Discrete and almost invisible, the latest aids can make such a difference and vastly improve your hearing. You’ll never regain what has gone, but you can make the best of what you have left. BOOK REVIEW
ST LEONARD’S FOREST, WEST SUSSEX: A LANDSCAPE HISTORY
Dr Maggie Weir-Wilson with her book.
H
ave you ever wondered about St. Leonard’s Forest as you pass it by in your car, bicycle, or in the bus; maybe you have walked its footpaths, with or without a dog? Was it a royal forest? Who owned it? And what about the dragon? Wasn’t there something about a saint and the white and pink spring flowers, lily of the valley? Wonder no more. This is the first in depth study of St. Leonard’s Forest and it is clear from reading this thoroughly researched and engaging book that its author, Dr Maggie Weir-Wilson, has a deep interest in and love of the Sussex landscape, particularly its forests. St Leonard’s Forest, West Sussex: A Landscape History, covers the period from approximately the mid-18th century to the beginning of the 20th century. To make sense of the Forest’s development, this volume is set in its earlier historical and geographical context; Maggie researched how social and economic history effected this forest landscape. St. Leonard’s Forest, West Sussex: A Landscape History focusses on both the physical and social changes to the landscape of St. Leonard’s Forest and how these changes have impacted its population and growth. Follow the Forest’s journey from the early days of hunting, iron and charcoal production, stone quarries, rabbit warrens and poor heathland, through to the transformation to high value

properties with attractive gardens and parks. Five estates in the centre of the forest are considered, and inevitably St. Leonard’s dragon has his story told, along with other forest legends and myths. When she came to live in Horsham in the year 2000, Maggie was keen to know more about this lovely forest on her doorstep, so she began taking evening classes at the University of Sussex for a BA in Landscape Studies. When she retired from her work as a Probation Officer and Practice Teacher, she continued studying for her doctorate under the supervision of Professor Brian Short, and produced her thesis on the historic landscape changes of St. Leonard’s Forest. Maggie was awarded her doctorate in 2014 and has always been keen to make her research more widely available to West Sussex residents, historians and those who love forests, hence she wrote St Leonard’s Forest, West Sussex: A Landscape History. During the last two years Maggie has worked extensively to write her book. Jeremy Knight, Museum and Heritage Officer with Horsham Museum, kindly read Maggie’s draft and offering detailed feedback. In addition, Maggie has had the support and blessing of Emeritus Professor Brian Short of University of Sussex who has encouraged her efforts in writing this book. Bryan's support extended from being Maggie's supervisor, guiding her towards her DPhil thesis in 2014, through to writing the foreword for this book. Maggie’s first publication was Secret Horsham (2019) published by Amberley Publications. St Leonard’s Forest is her second book, and is published by new local publishers and complete author support team, Author’s Pen. Not keen to sit around since completing her doctorate, Maggie has focussed on writing, both fiction, non-fiction and also poetry. Maggie’s other

hobbies include: research, poetry, botanic watercolour painting, local history and gardens. St Leonard’s Forest, West Sussex: A Landscape History, has allowed Maggie to combine a number of these hobbies and really challenge them and herself. Her watercolours and poetry make a beautiful addition throughout her St Leonard’s Forest book. Maggie hopes her book will encourage everyone who reads it to consider the value of the landscape, and particularly its forests, not purely in terms of the financial value of their land, mineral and plant content, but also in terms of their undoubted value for the mental health and wellbeing of our society. Maggie’s book touches on the fascinating subject of terrapsychology, which rejects the concept that the earth is of use only as a source of resources for humanity, but rather looks at it as a living ecosystem which impinges on the human psyche in a positive or
negative way. The ways it does this can be recognised as feelings, dreams and archetypes, such as the dragon and devil that appear so frequently in the myths of St. Leonard’s Forest. Ultimately, though there is encouragement to get to know St Leonard’s Forest by the footpaths that were so nearly closed at the beginning of the 20th century, and to give thanks to those locals who fought to keep those footpaths open and who won the day. To walk through St Leonard’s Forest and appreciate its history, its legends, and get that restorative feeling that can only come from the sight and smell of pine, beech, oak and birch. Readers can find out more about Maggie, her book about St. Leonard’s Forest on her website: www.maggieweirwilson.uk. SEASONAL
Time For A Spring Clean
During the long, dark winter, when the sun is low in the sky and the perpetual cloud blanket obliterates its light anyway, dust and dirt are able to hide themselves very effectively in the corners, on the surfaces and even on the windows of our homes. By early spring all is looking brighter – in every respect. But those unforgiving shafts of light slide DFURVV WKH URRP VKRZLQJ XS WKH JUXEE\ ¾QJHU marks on the door, the ring marks on tables and the thick layer of dust on the mantelpiece. It must be time for a spring clean. An article in the Manufacturer and Builder magazine of 1872 (a ‘practical journal of industrial progress’) describes spring cleaning as “The season of general cleaning, when all the corners and closets are overturned and hidden things are brought to light”. Whilst period dramas such as Downton Abbey have inspired a new generation to revive traditional kitchen skills, it’s questionable ZKHWKHU WZHQW\ ¾UVW FHQWXU\ KRXVHKROGHUV ZLOO be tempted to adopt the cleaning methods recommended by the magazine, which include black-leading grates, whitewashing walls and scalding bedsteads. The Victorians may have excelled at spring cleaning but they certainly didn’t invent it. Some historians believe that the origins of this tradition date back to the ancient Persian New Year, the Iranian Norouz ZKLFK IDOOV RQ WKH ¾UVW GD\ RI spring. Iranians still practice ‘khooneh tekouni’ – which literally translates as ‘shaking the house’ – at this time. The Jewish feast of Passover is a religious festival that also hints at a possible origin

for spring cleaning. During the holiday the faithful are instructed to refrain from eating any leavened foodstuffs (‘chametz’). The Bible commands that even tiny crumbs must be removed from the house and this results in a ritual hunt for crumbs by candlelight during the evening before the holiday begins. Christianity has its own spring cleaning traditions. In Greece, householders clean everything WKRURXJKO\ HLWKHU EHIRUH RU GXULQJ WKH ¾UVW ZHHN of Lent, as a physical manifestation of Lent’s message of spiritual cleansing and renewal. For the ancient Chinese, the concept of New Year cleaning is associated with good fortune. Householders then locked up the broom for a few days to prevent sweeping away any good luck that might have entered at the turn of the year. When ancient cultures share such similar traditions it’s hard to say exactly when and where the idea of ‘spring cleaning’ originated. However, it’s obvious that the urge to clear away the cobwebs of winter and prepare for the summer months is hardwired into human DNA. Although someone we once met, who declared that she fed her hens leftover bacon and eggs, did, I feel, overstep the mark a little. The early bird really does get the worm. Although the slightly delayed bird may succeed in taking it off you, if you don’t pay attention. Opportunity not only knocks, it grabs too. Care for your environment. Once again, chickens lead by example. Whether it’s pulling up the weeds, providing some essential pest control or aerating the soil, chickens are constantly on the lookout for ways to contribute. Play to your strengths. &KLFNHQV GRQµW ¿\ RU glide and their singing isn’t up to much. But... they don’t waste food, or an opportunity, and they make eggcellent companions.
