orsham District Council is preparing a draft Local Plan for the District. Stay informed and have your say. Why we need a Local Plan The Government requires all local planning authorities to meet demand for new homes as part of their long term Local Plans. This presents the Council with enormous challenges. We are therefore looking harder than ever for locations where we can best deliver new homes and new jobs. The new Horsham District Local Plan will guide development in the District to 2036. One of the aims of the new Plan is to set out how the housing number requirement is to be met in the most sustainable way,

including aiming for an increase in biodiversity, a high percentage of affordable homes and good public amenities. We also need consider how we provide local, well-paid jobs to minimise commuting. REFLECTIONS ON INCINERATOR INQUIRY

T

he Incinerator Inquiry which follows a legal framework is not the easiest of environments in which to ask residents to come and express their concerns. The Planning Inspector, Ian Jenkins, was as accommodating as possible in making people feel comfortable, but if residents did give evidence they had to consider if they would accept cross examination from Britaniacrest's barrister in order to add more weight to their views. The process is not meant to be adversarial but inquisitorial. However, despite this many members of our community did come forward and made their feelings known to the Inspector about the impact that building this incinerator would have on their daily lives. We were pleased that the Inspector set aside a day for site visits with all interested parties to personally view the local area. He was also making other visits on his own both during day and night to inform his decision. This was reassuring and much appreciated. Another vital part of the Inquiry process was the opportunity for Ni4H and residents to take part in discussing what planning conditions should apply, if the incinerator were to be approved. Ni4H were assisted in round table discussions by our planning expert, Maureen Darrie and were able to bring forward proposals from research into conditions from other incinerators and to present a reasoned best practice case. Over the past two years there have been two consultations regarding this incinerator application and the response from the residents of Horsham on both occasions has been an overwhelming objection to the development. It is by far the largest reaction to any planning application I have seen in my 14 years as County Councillor. During the first consultation 5,500 residents rejected this application either by direct objection to the planners or by signing a petition. Since the Appeal application was made another 2,237 people have added their names to a second petition which was presented to the Planning

Inspector at the Inquiry. This is an overwhelming NO vote. It is local democracy at work and we asked the Inspector to give this the weight it deserved. Ni4H and the local community has been at a huge disadvantage to Britaniacrest in bringing our representations to this Inquiry. Given the issues involved here are very technical and complex, they have been able to use their considerable resources to buy themselves experienced experts and representatives to make their pitch. On the other hand, Ni4H are not experts and it is not a professional organisation - it is a Community Group attempting to understand and reflect the concerns of the community. Ni4H has had to work hard not only in developing its case, but also through fundraising events, public donations and pledges of financial support, to collect significant funds so that we can afford a barrister and experts, to represent local residents. Without this massive community effort over the last 12 months, it would have been impossible to give full weight at the Inquiry in presenting the excellent case we have and the powerful reasons we have for rejection of this appeal. We are confident from many submissions made by residents, that the Inspector will have understood the concerns that local people have about their future wellbeing if the incinerator comes to this area, the wholesale change of character that would be brought to our market town, how it would be out of keeping with its surroundings and the massive structure would overwhelm existing buildings in the surrounding area and would have a significant adverse impact on our beautiful views. We hope these heartfelt views and the more formal input from Ni4H and WSCC barristers will sway the Inspector to reject this Appeal. We remain optimistic for a positive result. Any suggestion that the Ni4H campaign was misleading is not so. In fact, Ni4H learned from other Community Groups labelled in this way how to avoid

Ni4H doing just that. Ni4H has taken great care over the content of press releases, social media publicity, newsletters, printed material and discussions with the public to remain measured in our approach to our campaign, opposing the development of this incinerator. Finally, we want to say a big thank you to everyone who has backed this campaign in their many different ways and to Ni4H Barrister Nick Grant from Landmark Chambers, Ni4H Experts Maureen Darrie from GP Planning Ltd, Only Solutions LLP and UKWIN. Through the hard work of Ni4H and the amazing local support we have given ourselves at least an even chance, where without it we would have had no chance, in putting our case forward so strongly for rejection of the Appeal. SUSSEX GREEN LIVING

HORSHAM CLIMATE CAFE LAUNCHED

O

n Saturday 7th December 2019 in partnership with the Horsham Quakers Sussex Green Living (SGL) launched the Horsham Climate Café. It will take place on the first Saturday of every month 2pm until 4pm in the Quaker Meeting House, Worthing Road, Horsham, HR12 1SL (opposite Sainsburys car park) after the morning’s Horsham Repair Café (10-1pm). At the Climate Cafe people can meet informally and talk about climate change, eat delicious homemade cake, have a hot drink and join in the conversations about problems and solutions. You can come once or every month. Due to demand from many young people living in Horsham District SGL want to provide a relaxed space where they can come together and share their climate concerns and actions. Initially this space will be for children and young people (age 11 and upwards). SGL hope it will be led by the pupils and supported with adult facilitation and mentoring. SGL know it can be difficult to talk about climate change with friends and family, so Climate Cafés are designed to provide a space to do just that. SGL’s longer term vision is to explore larger premises for the Horsham Repair Cafe and the Horsham Climate Café to run alongside each other, working with other Horsham partners. With larger premises SGL might include: • Environmental petitioning – telling people about the most important petitions, their aims and impacts. SGL will encourage people to sign the petition(s) during their visit to the climate café. • Energy – sharing ways to save energy and reduce fuel poverty. Using SGL’s cost comparison and clean energy site they can help people switch their electricity suppliers for their homes and businesses often saving them money. Or people can use SGL’s

site from the comfort of their home. As of December 2019 at the Horsham Repair Cafe SGL will be offering fuel poverty and energy saving advice thanks to a ‘CES Warming Communities’ grant. It’s similar to Weight Watchers where SGL help people take their first green steps, encouraging at least one green action a month. SGL hope they will come back month after month to be supported and monitored as they transition to a more sustainable life. • Climate Forum – young people working together to share ideas, helping give them a voice and support activity and in collaboration with Fridays for Future, Parents for Future and Parent Pledge. • Science behind climate change – if visitors want to learn more about climate change science, experts will be on hand to talk to them, suggesting reading and films to develop their knowledge. There are seven Climate Reality Leaders in West Sussex, all trained by the former US Vice President Al Gore along with leading climate change scientists who are part of the Climate Reality Leadership Corps. Carrie Cort, the founder of Sussex Green Living trained with the Climate Reality Leadership Corps in Manila, Philippines in March 2016. • Local campaigning groups – Representatives from groups like No Incinerator for Horsham, CAGNE (Communities Against Gatwick Noise Emissions) and Extinction Rebellion Horsham will be welcome, but unlikely to attend every month. GREAT EVENTS FOR 2020 Council announces new event experiences for Horsham in 2020

O

nce again, Horsham residents and visitors can look forward to a vibrant town centre programme of over 150 free events, markets, concerts and activities throughout 2020 co-ordinated by Horsham District Council and its many and varied commercial and community partners. The legacy of 2019’s Horsham District Year of Culture tees up an even more diverse set of events that seek to attract visitors from every sector of the community, engaging with increasing numbers of groups and local businesses. The primary purpose of the Council’s support is the economic bonus gained from increased footfall and publicity for the town, whilst enabling many business partners to use the town to achieve their own objectives, generating mutual benefits along the way. A central feature of this year’s events programme will see an increasing focus on sustainability in terms of both content and awareness of the core issues, with the Council working closely with local partners in the field including Kinder Living, Sussex Green Living and others. Individual event highlights this year include

Horsham’s starring role in the national programme of Good Friday Passion Plays entitled ‘One Good Friday 2020’ led by Horsham Churches Together and a re-energised town wide music festival on Easter Monday called ‘Horsham Sounds’ led by a consortium of community partners. For the first May bank holiday of the year, there will be a full weekend of entertainment. As part of a national celebration of the 75th anniversary of the end of the Second World War in Europe Horsham will be hosting ‘Horsham’s VE75 Weekend’, including The Broadwood Day of Dance and Horsham’s Bus Rally. Friday’s VE Bank Holiday on 8 May gives a one off opportunity for the whole community to come together to remember the bittersweet joy of peace felt on 8 May 1945. Already working with QM Studios and Age UK, Horsham District Council are inviting more community groups to step forward to play a part in a special day which will include ‘Winston Churchill’, an ‘East’ Street Party and a 16 piece ‘Glen Miller’ style band finale. Following their successful introduction in 2019 as part of the Year of Culture, the Spanish festival ‘Feria de Horsham’ returns as does an

extension of the Caribbean Day to include Latin America called ‘Carnivale Horsham’ in 2020. The ever popular French Fest will also return. Later in the year, September’s food and drink weekend returns with Saturday’s ‘The New Big Nibble’, with an increased emphasis on it being a local food show as well as a market place. Sunday’s Little Nibble is being rebranded as ‘The Future Food Show’ with all sorts of healthy and alternative food options on display. Horsham AmeriCARna is set to take over the town centre and Hop Oast Park & Ride with more ‘cruise throughs’ by a greater variety of vehicles. Plans for Christmas 2020 are to be confirmed and will be subject to evaluations of 2019’s activities and 2020’s available resources. These highlights are in addition to an amazing variety of other events, markets, bandstand concerts, town trails, exhibitions and street entertainment that all go on throughout the year. Commenting on the events programme for 2020, Horsham District Council Cabinet Member for the Local Economy Cllr Paul Clarke said: “I am delighted that we are set to welcome such a broad scope of events and activities to Horsham for 2020. This event first ran in 2006 over two days with 12 Ferraris each day. Over time the event grew to a peak at Piazza Italia X in 2016 with displays of some 101 Ferraris, bandstand and balcony Romeo & Juliet performances, Gladiators, Granny Tourismo antics, Italian Job Mini cavalcades and many top quality operatic arias along the way. Unfortunately, many of the voluntary and commercial partners that made up so much of the content of this event are not now available. This has led to the event organisers taking the decision to terminate the event while it retains such a great reputation, allowing available resources to focus on a wider town programme with the many new events. Gill Constable has joined the Health and Wellbeing team with a wealth of experience in delivering group exercise programmes and a specialist LaterLife qualification in postural stability instruction. The Strong & Steady programme includes a free eight week course at The Bridge Leisure Centre in Broadbridge Heath along with a workshop, new for 2020, that can be taken to rural locations throughout Horsham District. The aim of programme is to improve strength, balance, coordination and flexibility and maintain people’s independence. HELP CREATE A COMMUNITY FRIDGE Fare Divide’s vision is to save perishable foodstuffs from landfill and to inspire healthier communities by forging give-and-take partnerships making available surplus food to all without judgement and stigma. Anita Rosser is working with Sarah Renfrey, founder of Fare Divide, to set up a community fridge in Horsham. Anita explains the concept below and how they need to raise £2,040.

arah and I are incredibly passionate about reducing food waste and preventing perfectly edible food from going to landfill. I personally think it's scandalous that tonnes of food is thrown away every day in the UK, particularly by retailers and supermarkets, or it's reduced before the Best Before Date even though the food will remain perfectly edible for a week if not longer. I often buy packets of tomatoes that have been reduced and they are perfectly edible a week later. How does a Community Fridge differ from a Food Bank? People usually refer to food banks as an emergency stop gap solution, and are vital for an increasing number of people. Generally non-perishable food items are given out, and food bank users are not always at liberty to choose what they eat, although each food parcel is tailored to each household’s needs. Community Fridges exist to reduce food waste and foster a spirit of sharing and mutual support within a community. They are often open more regularly and offer a source of fresh

good quality food surplus for everyone. In many cases the most frequent items moving through the fridge are fruit and veg. They operate on a trust basis and are not means tested. The aim of the Horsham Community Fridge project is to set-up and launch a Community Fridge in Horsham. Community Fridges are social sites of food education and sharing. They are housed in publicly accessible places making fresh food that would otherwise be wasted freely available to the community. HELPING YOUR BODY TO DETOXIFY

any new year resolutions involve some form of dieting. But equally as important is detoxifying the body of its impurities and getting rid of all those nasty toxins that can prevent it working the way it should. Detoxification refers to the body’s natural ability to convert potentially toxic substances into harmless particles that it then removes without us knowing. Our bodies do such an amazing job of this (through the liver in particular) that you might not realise that we’re constantly surrounded by potentially toxic substances. However, sometimes our bodies can get a little overwhelmed if we don’t take care of ourselves. Common signs and symptoms of the detoxification process not working properly may include: • Constipation/diarrhoea • Food allergies and sensitivities • Skin issues • Asthma • Inability to lose weight • Infertility • Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) • Depression • Headaches • Poor memory and concentration Toxins can come from a number of sources including: pesticides in food, alcohol, poor air quality, parabens found in creams and make-up to name just a few. Before embarking on a detox programme – especially those quick fix ones – it’s always a good idea to contact your healthcare practitioner. Eat more fresh or frozen berries such blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, strawberries which are rich in antioxidants. 3. Drink more water as it’s needed to flush out toxins – aim for 6-8 glasses a day. 4. Increase fibre intake to 30grams a day to optimise toxin elimination. 5. Include a variety of spices in cooking such as rosemary, coriander and turmeric. 6. Reduce the amount of processed foods, ready meals and foods high in sugar eaten. These have been linked to chronic diseases, such as heart disease, cancer, and diabetes which harm the organs that play an important role in the detoxification processes. 7. Cut down on alcohol and cigarettes as they are especially damaging to the liver and lungs, our detoxification organs. The above should all help the body with its dayto-day detoxification processes, and let’s not forget that regular exercise and good quality sleep will also help the body to detoxify. orsham Table Tennis Club in conjunction with Horsham District Council is geared up to offer more opportunities to cater for players of all types and levels in 2020. The New Year will see the introduction of a new one-to-one coaching service to help fasttrack improvement. The details for this and other coaching session opportunities can be viewed in the ‘Programme’ section of www.horshamtabletennisclub.co.uk Additionally, a new starter course TTKidz, is also set to begin in early February and will be run out of the club’s satellite venue at Collyer’s on Friday nights. So parents, if you have a boy or girl eager to get an appropriately pitched and fun grounding in a fantastic and often underestimated sport get him/her signed up at www.ttkidz.co.uk TTKidz is an entry route for youngsters into a more widely growing junior coaching and competition offer. Other sessions for older and more established youngsters are running on Mondays and Wednesdays. The Greenway Academy based table tennis group has grown its coach and volunteer ranks significantly over the last 12 months having received great support from Table Tennis England and Horsham District Council, and its expanded team is looking to make further progress in engaging more players to one of the most accessible sports available. Over October and November the club was one of the first to run the new governing body promoted TTKidz eight-week programme, aimed at engaging 6-11 year olds. Some 28 youngsters took up the initiative, making for the biggest initial programme in the whole country. No bigger expression of progress can be seen than the club fielding nine National Cadet League under 15 teams and four teams entering the under 18 National Junior League, running at

Sussex University, Brighton. The club’s matchplay nights on Friday evenings at Collyer’s College continue to offer an excellent opportunity for players of all ages and abilities to compete informally in a large facility that allows lots of players to play lots of matches. On the adult front, the club continues to be proactive with the ladies (14 years plus) coaching programme attracting a strong following. Sessions will re-start at Collyer’s College on 10 January. An inter-business competition is being planned to run in February to raise funds for local charity Set4Success, which supports talented young sportspeople to achieve their dreams. WRITE TO THE GOVERNMENT

ommunity and environmental aviation group, CAGNE, is sending a strong message to the newly elected Members of Parliament, along with local residents: Write to the Secretary of State for Transport and demand that the growth proposed by Gatwick Airport from the main runway is a Nationally Significant Infrastructure Project (NSIP) under the Planning Act 2008 examinationas it will add approximately 55,000 extra flights a year - 340,000 aircraft movements by 2033 with 61m passengers added to the meagre infrastructure. A suggested letter can be found at www.cagne.org “The Gatwick Airport management plans for significant expansion from the main runway is simply unsustainable growth for the planet and us all,” said the CAGNE committee. “It is fundamentally wrong that a commercial organisation can propose to place such a burden on us all without full parliamentary or even public inspection”. At the start of 2020 residents are asked to write to the Secretary of State for Transport (Rt Hon Grant Shapps MP, Secretary of State for Transport, Greater Minster House, 33 Horseferry Road, London SW1P 4DR/ grant.shapps@dft.gsi.gov.uk), copy in their local Member of Parliament (see below), to demand transparency by the growth plans being part of NSIP enquiry. The Secretary of State for Transport is the official that has the power to ensure this main runway growth is fully examined on the grounds of climate emergency, lack of road and rail access, decline in air quality, lack of affordable housing, healthcare, schools, amenities and significant increase in aircraft noise. Unless residents act this growth will not have the full parliamentary scrutiny or even your scrutiny as it is in keeping with government

policy, ‘to make best use of current facilities’, so Gatwick looks to grow without any restrictions or consultation. CAGNE has raised with local authorities that this proposed growth should be called in due to the huge burden on surrounding areas and lack of consideration to the impact on the planet; many local authorities having declared a climate emergency but feel powerless against such a commercial organisation as Gatwick. The prime issues surrounding Gatwick’s growth plans: • Growth from the main runway will not be part of the Development Consent Order (DCO) unlike the emergency runway • We believe an increase in aircraft movements will be predominantly from the main runway and with emergency runway, once reconstructed as a new runway, bringing 390,000 ATMs a year with 74m passengers, nearly 40% increase; • Lack of any funding to meet the huge increases in migrating workers into areas currently with low unemployment; lack of affordable housing; lack of healthcare, school provision and amenities; • And a significant increase in noise for all as any reduction with new technology will be lost due to the substantial increase in aircraft movements as with CO2 reduction - Gatwick takes its carbon growth in isolation and only up to 3,000ft. This is only part of the Gatwick growth plan as the management are also perusing to use the emergency runway to north of the main runway as a second runway and are misleading residents that it can be used in conjunction with the main runway currently, this is not true as it would be unsafe so the emergency runway will have to be re-built. CAGNE feel this is therefore constructing a new runway and not in keeping with Government policy as detailed above and so is a falsehood.

A GAME OF TWO HALVES

or me February is where the gardening year begins...twice!

First - Reaping last year’s rewards: If you were industrious in the autumn, you could now be benefiting from a lovely display of snowdrops (Gallanthus) and Irises. My favourite snowdrops are G ‘Atkinsii’, which are tall with long, graceful flowers and G. nivalis ‘Viridapicis’ with sweet, green tipped flowers. It’s said they’re best planted ‘in the green’ in Spring but I’ve had lots of success with packaged bulbs planted in the autumn so they’re definitely worth trying. As for irises, the deep blue Iris ‘Joyce’ is hard to beat especially on my poor, free draining soil. I planted a witch hazel as soon as we moved into our present house; Hamamelis x intermedia ‘Pallida’. I can’t live without fragrance in my garden and at this bare, drab time of year the wonderfully scented pale-yellow flowers lift my spirits. I discovered we’d inherited an evergreen Clematis (C. armandii). I’d never grown it before but it’s worth seeking out. It needs a warm wall or fence and well-drained soil then rewards you by being frost-hardy and producing lovely creamy, scented flowers at this time of year.

Potting up summer bulbs is generally left until late spring, but I always pot up one or two pots in February. It allows them to get established and provides a nice early display for my patio. Happy gardening. By Rachael Leverton

But don’t panic; the beauty of gardening is that the seasons keep rolling round so make sure you use February to ensure your summer display is top notch. February is definitely the month to start sowing seeds. Fill pots or seed trays with seed compost then firm and level the surface. Sprinkle seeds on to the surface of the compost then cover with a layer of fine grit. Water well with a fine spray. Cover with clear plastic (a polythene bag will do nicely) and remove it once the seeds germinate. Learn from my mistake one year and don’t forget to label the pots! CROWDFUNDING FOR PROJECTS The window is now open for community groups to put forward new initiatives and projects they would like to receive funding for from West Sussex Crowd

crowdfunding programme launched in May 2018 has seen more than 100 community-led projects in West Sussex hit their target and the window is now open until Thursday 13 February for community groups to put forward new initiatives and projects they would like to receive funding for. The West Sussex Crowd, run in partnership by West Sussex County Council and civic crowdfunding website www.spacehive.com/movement/westsussexcrow d, invites communities to come together and propose ideas to regenerate their local areas. Since its launch, more than 2,800 local people, businesses, district/borough and town/parish councils have backed projects across the county, collectively raising over £750,000 and showing the strength of community buy-in for their ideas. Duncan Crow, Cabinet Member for Fire & Rescue and Communities, said: “This grant funding is all about supporting community projects, strengthening communities and our councillors working with their communities to help generate support for key projects. “We are thrilled that 107 successful projects have hit their target with many more on the way. These diverse and extraordinary projects will strengthen local places and make West Sussex an even greater place to live, work and enjoy.” Alongside money raised by outside donations through the West Sussex Crowd, the county council can also pledge to crowdfunding campaigns for projects which will have real impact in their local area. STICKY CHINESE CHICKEN WINGS This scrumptious supper dish is inspired by last month’s Chinese New Year festival Preparation time: 15 minutes Cooking time: 30 minutes + 50 minutes Serves: 4-6 fkdobafbkqp=

1.5 kg chicken wings 2 level tbsp baking POWDER ¾ tsp table salt ½ tsp pepper 3 spring onions, chopped Sticky Chinese Sauce 1 tsp vegetable oil pinch of salt and pepper 1 thumb-sized piece of ginger peeled and finely chopped 1 tbsp sweet chilli sauce 2 tbsp honey

4 tbsp dark brown sugar 5 tbsp dark soy sauce 1 tsp lemon grass paste (you can buy this in tubes) 2 cloves garlic peeled and minced 1 tbsp sesame seeds (lightly toasted) jbqela Preheat the oven to 120C / 100C Fan Gas ½. Place a rack on a large baking tray. Cut each wing at the joint so you have a mini wing and a drumette. Dry these with kitchen roll (they mustn't be too damp, then place in a large bowl and add the baking powder, salt and pepper. Mix to combine. Remove the chicken and place in a single layer on the rack, skin side up. Discard the remaining coating mixture. Place the chicken on the lower shelf of the oven for 30 minutes to dry. After 30 minutes, turn the oven up to 220C / 200 Fan / Gas 6, rotate the tray and place on the middle shelf in the oven for 45-50 minutes until the wings are golden and crispy. Remove from the oven to cool slightly. Place all of the sauce ingredients into a saucepan, stir and bring to the boil. Allow to simmer for 5-10 minutes until the sauce reduces and thickens slightly. Turn off the heat. Place the cooked wing pieces in a large bowl and carefully pour over the warm sticky sauce. Mix to combine, then serve topped with chopped spring onions and some toasted sesame seeds.

Rub a cloth on your cat’s face and then around the basket or use the synthetic feline facial pheromone, Feliway. orsham District Council is a lead member of the district’s Safe and Well Partnership and in order to plan and implement key priorities, the council needs to engage with residents across the district to gather your views on crime and disorder. To this end, a short survey has been created, which should take approximately 10 minutes to complete. Topics in the survey include: • how safe you feel • whether you have been a victim of a crime • what you feel are the main causes of crime • what you feel the Safe and Well Partnership should be focusing on

The conductor, composer and educator Steve Dummer, known to many as conductor of the Horsham Symphony Orchestra, appears in his other role as clarinettist to present an evening of music for the instrument with pianist Yoko Ono on Saturday 15th February at Causeway Barn 7.30pm. Steve’s introductions are always an education so he will guide us through a programme, including works by Rodney Bennett, Finzi, Poulenc and Horovitz, with his usual enthusiastic presentation.

Horsham’s Parish Church choirs join with the talented young percussionist Toril AzzaliniMachecler, percussion finalist in the BBC Young Musician of the Year Competition 2018, and soprano Helen Whittington (pictured right), to present an evening of musical delights on Saturday 7th March in St Mary’s Parish Church 7.30pm. Helen has performed throughout the UK in opera, Cabaret, Oratorio and Church music, and is the resident soprano with the opera gala trio ‘Aspects of Opera’. Please help Horsham Museum & Art Gallery to care for its unique collection by adopting one of our chosen artefacts for a year - for yourself, or as an unusual gift. There are 30 museum exhibits to adopt at the standard rate of £25 for adults or £10 for children. hy core exercises are important. We know that getting fit is important for a healthy life. Often, we equate fitness with running, cycling, walking or some other form of exercise. But there's one aspect of fitness that is almost always overlooked; our core muscles. Whenever I talk about building muscle everyone pictures someone at a weight bench pumping iron until their biceps bulge out of their shirts. But strengthening and toning your muscles can be much more subtle. And even a small amount of work on your core strength can dramatically improve your overall fitness and wellbeing. What Are Your Core Muscles? Your core muscles form a ring around the middle of your body. Most people think of the six pack muscles in the abdomen, but the core includes a range of muscles in your sides and back as well. Their job is to keep the top and bottom halves of your body connected together whilst allowing them to move independently. They form a strong foundation that the majority of your other muscles depend upon when you move your body. When Do I Use My Core Muscles? Practically every movement you make and every position you put your body into involves your core muscles. They are really important. Bending over to pick something up, twisting to look behind you and sitting up in bed are more obvious moments your core is activated. But running, walking, sitting in a chair and even standing still all rely on core strength. Without it the top half of your body would simply flop over. What Are the Benefits of Core Strength? Building a strong core provides a firm and flexible support for every activity your body performs. The stability provided gives you better balance and better posture which in turn helps prevent falls and injuries in your day-to-day life. The support from your core muscles takes the

strain away from your skeleton and helps hold it in place alleviating some forms of back pain, stiffness and soreness when you move your body. Any time you move whether it's for exercise or doing the housework or gardening, a strong core will help you perform better and reduce muscle fatigue in the other parts of your body by giving them a firm base to attach to. How Can I Build My Core Strength? One of the best things about core strength is that you don't need a gym or expensive equipment to improve it. There are lots of exercises you can do at home. Make sure you seek medical advice before attempting any new exercise regime. Most people think of sit ups as the prime core exercise. I advise people not to do sit ups as they are not particularly effective and the continual flexing of the base of your spine can lead to lower back injuries. My top tips are planks, leg raises and mountain climbers. If you're not sure what these are have a chat with your local personal trainer or gym instructor, or search on YouTube for easy-tofollow tutorials. HORSHAM MUSEUM & ART GALLERY Boom and Bust: Horsham after the Great War 9th Nov 2019 to 21st Feb 2020 The first decade after the First World War was one of great change throughout Britain, and Horsham was no exception. A new exhibition at Horsham Museum and Art Gallery, Boom and Bust: Horsham after the Great War, will look at the developments and events that took place during the 1920s, and how they affected the town and the people that lived here. A Flock of Sparrows – celebrating the life of Dr Geoffrey Sparrow; a comic genius 21st Dec 2019 to 22nd Feb 2020 Dr Geoffrey Sparrow arrived in Horsham 100 years ago, setting up in practice. Along with his medical skill he brought great artistic talent and flair for capturing life as lived in the District in the 1930-60s. His genius was capturing in a few strokes, on the back of napkins, envelopes and the more formal painting, the humour of life. He follows in the tradition of Rowlandson, but without the cutting edge. John R Abbey - Horsham's Greatest Book Collector 10th Jan 2020 to 28th Mar 2020 For over 30 years one time Storrington resident Major J R Abbey built up one of the greatest collections of books based on those attributes. This small exhibition celebrates his passion with books and photographs. Major Abbey died on Christmas eve 1969. Causeway House, Horsham: 600 Years and Counting 17th Jan 2020 to 21st Mar 2020 Now home to Horsham Museum and Art Gallery this house began its life 600 years ago as an office, workshop for a medieval merchant, later in middle age becoming a tailors home, before in its more mature years helping out in the
