COMMENT
CHARITY BEGINS AT HOME
W
hen people say 'Charity begins at home' they very often mean 'You should look after your own kids, family and own circle first and then be kind to people' which is not the original meaning of the proverb. The original meaning is that charity begins in the home - that is to say kids learn charity in the home. Many studies have found that happiness and a sense of fulfillment comes more from helping others and putting others ahead of yourself, along with a sense of gratitude, than from wealth or possessions. In other words, being charitable is one of the secrets to a “good” life, and the idea of charity beginning at home has less to do with taking care of your own needs, and more to do with teaching your children
about how to give to others. In this issue there are numerous charities who will be grateful of your support. From signing up to be part of the Horsham Lions Club Swimarathon on page 32, joining the second Firewalk organised by St Catherine’s Hospice on page 29 to buying the Christmas single produced by Parkinson’s Choir on page 26. Horsham sets a very standard for supporting charities as epitomised by the culmination of the HeART to Heart campaign on page 30 when an amazing £50,000 was raised for the 26 heart sculptures. This is the season of giving and the tremendous example set by the community will stand the children of the area in very good stead. Richard Milbourn, Editor E: editor@carnahpublications.com

NEW ENTERPRISE PARK PLANNED
P
roposals for a new Horsham Enterprise Park, bringing commercial space, housing and community facilities to Horsham town centre, have taken a big step forward after gaining outline planning approval on 16th October. Horsham District Council agreed with the officer’s recommendation for approval. It means West Sussex County Council can progress to the next stage of the redevelopment of the former Novartis site in Wimblehurst Road, Horsham. County Council Leader Louise Goldsmith said: “To get to this stage has taken more than two years of hard work to develop a plan for the former Novartis site which brings maximum benefit to Horsham while also ensuring our proposals are financially viable. “Our aim is for Horsham Enterprise Park to support

economic growth by providing new commercial space for businesses and so bringing more than 1,500 local jobs into the area. The residential element, which is needed to make our plans viable, will bring a good mix of affordable housing for Horsham and community facilities for all to enjoy. Approximately two-thirds of the site is planned for commercial development. The remaining onethird will be for new homes. The 1930s Art Deco building will be retained.

NEW DISCOVERY TRAIL OPENED
W
arnham Local Nature Reserve’s latest attraction was officially declared open on Friday 1 November with the help of woodland celebrity The Gruffalo. The Reserve’s new Discovery Trail, designed for visitors of all ages, follows the paths and boardwalks that surround the Reserve’s millpond. It is packed with information about the wildlife, flora and fauna that call the Reserve home. There are stories from the site’s history as well as a host of fun facts designed to appeal to all ages. Our younger visitors have the chance to become ‘Junior Trail Detectives’ by completing the trail, finding six hidden rubbing plates and completing the quizzes and puzzles all aimed at providing a fun introduction to the life on the Reserve and inspiring the next generation to learn about how to protect it. Additionally, as part of the Trail there are two special new sculptures: the Bat Bothy and the TriHelix which were both created as part of the Horsham District Year of Culture 2019 ‘Field Notes from Warnham’ project, leaving a lasting legacy of the year of celebrations. The Discovery Trail forms an initial part of a larger project – the Discovery Hub Project which is being partly funded by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development who support investment in public recreational infrastructure. The Discovery Hub and the creation of a Shelley themed garden at the entrance to the Reserve will be opened in 2020. Please mention HORSHAM PAGES South when responding to adverts
With a long history of being biodiversity rich, Warnham Local Nature Reserve is one of the most significant sites in the county for wildlife and flora. The Sussex Biodiversity Record Centre positions the Reserve in third place in terms of being species rich due to the wide range of habitats that are nurtured there.

HALLOWEEN CAPERS

here was a whole lot of spooky fun and antics going on for Halloween in Horsham Town Centre on 31 October as the town hosted its annual Halloween party for younger children organised by Horsham District Council and partners. Family Centres and Horsham Churches Together (HCT) busy all day alongside performances from ‘Rebecca’ the story telling witch and outrageous bubble fun from ‘Bubble Joe’. Thanks to the Horsham District Year of Culture 2019 team, there were appearances in the morning by The Gruffalo, creating a deal of excitement as children spotted the famous character. A pumpkin trail organised by HCT ran across a Halloween themed market featuring many Carfax traders who really got into the spirit of the day, supported by organisers Horsham Markets. These colourful stalls were accompanied by children’s rides from ML Pleasure Fairs, a face painter and the ongoing Rotary Trick or Treat Trail across the town, all adding to the fun on offer. In the afternoon, a Halloween costume parade, starting from the Bishopric Stream, attracted around fifty youngsters and their carers led by the ‘Story Witch’ through West Street to the Carfax Bandstand. Horsham District Council Cabinet Member for the Local Economy Cllr Paul Clarke commented: “This was another great event staged by the Council and its various partners. “It encouraged many people to come into the town to enjoy the fun, creating lots of extra business for local traders. It was particularly good to see all the usual Thursday market traders entering into the spirit of the day in their amazing costumes with their Halloween themed wares.” Please mention HORSHAM PAGES South when responding to adverts

CROWDFUNDING FOR CHILDREN’S PARADE After the huge success of Horsham Children's Parade 2019, the organisers are determined to make the magic happen again in 2020!
I
n July this year, the parade saw more than 700 children from 17 district schools showcase their ‘Art & Artist’ inspired creations through the streets of Horsham to the delight of hundreds of spectators. A truly fun community experience, it was a joyous spectacle of colourful costumes, giant models, upbeat music and imaginative dance enjoyed by all. It’s hardly surprising then that more than 20 district schools and other youth groups have already registered to take part in 2020. More than just a parade, the event also aims to provide the wider community, who are not participating in the main event, with the opportunity to get creative – be that painting at an easel, making a mask or modelling some clay. One way they want to do this is by delivering a range of creative activities in their special large-scale marquee at the parade end in Horsham Park. Aleida Strowger, Director of Happy Accidents CIC, the not-for-profit arts organisation behind the parade, says: “We're seeking funding for the parade itself through sponsorship and grants, but we’d love

some support from the people of Horsham District to deliver the community marquee so that we can put on a mini exhibition and some fun creative activities for the whole community in Horsham Park after the parade. In 2019 the marquee was part of the ever-popular Funday Sunday, run by Rotary Club of Horsham and we’re very much hoping that we’ll be able to team up again in 2020. As part of our West Sussex Crowd crowdfunding campaign, we have applied for the West Sussex County Council’s Community Initiative Fund, which is in place to support projects like this. Before they allocate any funding however, they need to know that the projects they support have community support too. The campaign is already doing really well, but we still need more support – the more pledges we get from the public, the more likely it is that the project will receive funding.” If you’d like to support this worthwhile project, head over to West Sussex Crowd (www.spacehive.com/horsham-children-s-parade2020) to pledge a donation before November 30th. Donations start from as little as £2.

THE PROBUS CLUB
TRIPS, OUTINGS AND THEATRE VISITS
P
robus Clubs aim to provide opportunities for companionship amongst those who have retired from a busy working life and are looking to meet with people from similar backgrounds. Probus Clubs began to be established in the mid 1960’s, after Caterham Rotary Club in Surrey saw the need for an organistion for retired businesspeople. An initial meeting took place at a local hotel when some 42 people came along. The idea proved popular and interest grew quickly such that are now over 200 clubs in the United Kingdom and Ireland with numerous others in Europe and beyond. The Probus Club of Horsham and District, the first to be set up in the Horsham Area, meets on the first Thursday of each month between 10.00 am and 12.30 pm at Roffey Sports and Social Club. At each meeting, after a lively business session to discuss forthcoming events, previous activities and news from members, a speaker will give a talk or presentation. Earlier in the year a fascinating presentation was made by a former criminal who is committed to helping young people to steer away from a life of crime and more recently the club has been able to learn more about the History of Imperial Airways and to understand more of “A Policeman’s Lot”. After each club meeting an optional lunch is arranged for members, currently held at The Barn at Rookwood Golf Course. Club members with, most importantly, their

wives or partners enjoy trips, outings and theatre visits and these are a recipe for its ongoing success. Events over the recent past have included a visit to the Bank of England a trip to Reading Museum to see a reproduction of the Bayeux Tapestry followed by a boat trip on the Thames, a guided tour of Petworth House and a local visit to the Wings Aviation Museum at Balcombe ending with afternoon year at High Beeches. Forthcoming outings include a guided tour of Watts Gallery at Compton near Guildford, a Club Coffee Morning coffee morning a concert by the Black Dyke Brass Band at The Hawth and a ten pin bowling competition. In addition to the regular meetings, trips and visits, a Club walk organised and led by a club member, takes place most months, invariably concluding with lunch at a local hostelry. The Club’s current President is Professor Alcuin Blamires and Club Secretary is Ernie James who can be contacted on 01403 261848 by those seeking further information. Horsham and District Probus is a vibrant and active organisation of up to 50 men. There are a limited number of vacancies currently available and if anyone wishes to enquire about Membership of this or indeed any of the four other Probus Clubs in Horsham, they should contact the Club Secretary. dam Streeter, General Manager, says:“Autumn is very special at Leonardslee, with magnificent displays in the woodland gardens as the leaves turn, and the colours reflected on the seven lakes in the valley. We have rebuilt the paths, so there are many great walks, in any weather, and dogs on leads are welcome too. We are planting thousands of bulbs and introducing snowbells and other plants to bring the main flowering season forward, to enjoy earlier in the year. “Also we have an extensive new programme of events in the autumn and winter months and planned throughout 2020. ‘Shopfest’ on November 17th is a showcase for an inspiring collection of art, crafts and handmade goods by independent business pop-ups exhibiting lifestyle, fashion and homeware. “A further highlight in the gardens is ‘Leonardslee Illuminated’ - with woodland trails lit up for a festival of light, sound and festive cheer. This runs from December 12th to 15th, and 19th to 22nd.” Popular woodland areas to visit in the gardens to see the autumn colours include the American Hickory trees, with fluorescent yellow leaves;

Kasura or Candy Floss trees, whose unusual ovalshaped leaves change to a light orange colour and produce a strong fragrance of burnt sugar; Black Gum trees, a brilliant red and yellow; the North American oaks that tower over the garden; and the Swamp Cypresses with their dazzling orange colours, found along the edges of the lakes. Leonardslee Lakes and Gardens opened to the public on April 6th 2019 after a decade’s closure. The opening followed two years’ major restoration work on the Grade 1 Listed gardens and on-site facilities by Penny Streeter OBE who acquired the estate in 2017. The extensive garden collection of plants from around the world dates from 1888, when Sir Edmund bought Leonardslee from his in-laws. From this period, parties were invited to visit the estate, which continued in the ownership of the Loder family until 2010. Leonardslee Gardens and Estate is open every day except Christmas Day, 9am to 4pm autumn and winter opening hours. The rock garden and three paths will be closed until mid-December due to essential renovation work: www.leonardsleegardens.co.uk

THE PARKINSON’S CHOIR’S XMAS SINGLE A small branch of Parkinson’s UK based in Horsham is attempting to achieve big things with their 2019 Christmas single. Parkinson’s disease is a condition that many know little about. With celebrities bringing it into the public eye in more recent years, there seems no better time to launch a campaign to raise awareness and much needed funds for continued research into the disease – after all, there is no cure.
T
he Horsham branch of Parkinson’s UK are a group of individuals affected by Parkinson’s, be it as sufferers themselves or family and friends of those affected. They come together for both emotional and practical support and activities to assist in speech and mobility to make the quality of life of those affected as best as possible whilst living with this debilitating, cruel illness. Our Choir -Director/Composer Madeline Castrey (above right) first became involved with Parkinson’s UK through becoming a friend of one of the members, Jacqui Pullen, who attends the branch and who is also living with the condition. At first, Madeline was asked to attend the branch’s annual garden party and sing to the members for a couple of hours – but became so inspired by the activities of those at Parkinson’s UK and the extent at which people at the branch supported each other to improve one another’s quality of life. She knew she wanted to do something to help. Madeline (22) has fundraised extensively for various charities nationwide since the age of 14

after becoming seriously ill herself. Once recovered, she knew she wanted to do something to help those less fortunate and began an avid fundraising campaign to improve the lives of as many people as possible. She founded a vocal group which has now raised over £60,000 for various charities and individual causes and received a Princess Diana Award for her fundraising. Madeline has continued to put her skills to good use, giving her time freely to establish community choirs with her energetic, vibrant and unique style of choir direction and is keen to show through her work that the joy of music can be accessed by all. Madeline was the first 16 year old admitted into The London College of Music on a Bachelors degree course, and has now returned to lecture there (at just 22) whilst completing her PhD. Madeline is the sole creator of this project for Parkinson’s UK and is donating all of the proceeds to the charity. Our Song ‘This Christmas Time’ is a very special creation especially for this inspirational group of people,

It is completely unique and the recording of vocals, playing of instruments, production and design has been undertaken by Madeline for Parkinson’s UK. All vocals are that of the members of the branch, and we hope that many people will come together to listen to this special piece of music, just as we have come together to create it. As Parkinson’s disease has such a profound impact on those affected, and their families, Madeline wanted to created a unique original composition which both embodied the struggle of living with the condition with a unifying message of hope that by coming together, especially at this time of year, we can be stronger as we look to the future for a cure. Whilst this song is a special creation made from statements and conversations with those who are affected by the condition, it also extends further, reminding everyone that “you don’t have to face
anything alone We hope that our song ‘This Christmas Time’ helps to support and inspire whoever listens. Whilst Christmas is such a joyous time, it can also be a time of great difficulty, and by coming together, we are never truly alone. We will be releasing the song digitally (on iTunes & Spotify) as well as producing physical copies, which we will start selling locally – though we hope to be able to send these further afield! We have also produced an accompanying video, which will be available to watch on YouTube via our channel ‘The Parkinson’s Choir’ All proceeds raised from this song will be donated to Parkinson’s UK, to help fund support for those affected and research into the disease. Thank you in advance for listening. We are so grateful for your support and hope that you can help us reach as many people as possible! Release date: 22nd November.

THE HEAT IS ON FOR FIREWALK
S
t Catherine's Hospice is getting ready to heat up Horsham with its second ever Firewalk! Now, the local charity is looking for brave soles to come forward and face the flames to raise funds for terminally ill people in their community. St Catherine's is looking for 100 or more fearless fundraisers to put their bravery to the test and walk barefoot across 15 feet of red hot embers. Taking place on Friday 13 March 2020 at 7pm, in the Carfax, the thrilling Firewalk isn’t for the faint hearted! People will be in safe hands as the event is held in partnership with UK Firewalk. And their expert staff will share the secrets of successful firewalking with everyone who takes part before they face the flames. Alongside the Firewalk, there's also a Lego brick walk for under 18's who are keen to prove they’re not bricking it and tackle their own challenge to raise money for their local hospice. Anyone who has stepped on a stray Lego brick before might argue that this challenge takes more guts than the Firewalk itself! Arron Trott, Events Fundraiser at St Catherine's said "We're really excited to bring such a great challenge to Horsham. We hope lots of you will brave our first Horsham Firewalk or Lego walk and help us make the night a sizzling success! It's a brilliant thing to be able to say you've hot footed across fire for your local hospice, and we can't wait to celebrate with all our amazing firewalkers. Your efforts have never been important because at the

moment we can only care for one in three local people who need hospice care. But in the future, we want to be there for everyone facing death and bereavement. This is only going to be possible with your support." Think you can take the heat? Then don't delay, get your space today! Places are limited so book early. Fire up and register before Friday 17 January 2020 to quality for an early bird registration of £20. After 17 January it's £25 to register. To take part you'll also need to raise at least £150 sponsorship. Registration for the under 18's Lego walk is £10 and brave brick walkers are asked to try and raise £50 each. This heart is in special memory of one of our colleagues, who recently lost his fight with cancer, and the years he spent designing products to help improve the lives of others. The heart will take pride of place in our office for everyone to enjoy.” As part of the evening, bidders heard from Wendy Buckingham, whose husband Ken was cared for by St Catherine’s. She shared the impact of the hospice’s care on her family and asked people to bid as generously as possible. And bidders were in safe hands with experienced auctioneer, Hugh Edmeades. HORSHAM LIONS CLUB
SWIMARATHON SUPPORTS CHARITY
H
orsham Lions Club biggest annual event, the Swimarathon, will be the ninth next year to be run at The Pavilions in the Park Leisure Centre. Over the last eight years the Swimarathon has raised over £56,000 which has been donated to a number of local schools, organisations and charities. The 2020 Swimarathon takes place on Sunday 15th March 2020 starting at 12 noon and the closing date for entries is 3rd February 2020. In 2017 and 2018 the event supported Chestnut Tree House Children’s Hospice which provides a wide range of services for children with life-shortening conditions and their families. Over the last two years the event has raised an amazing £18,192.29 for the hospice. In 2019, the Swimarathon supported Jigsaw Trust which provides specialist education and support for children and adults with autism, based on Dunsfold Park in Surrey. The aims of Jigsaw Trust are to improve the lives of those affected by an autism spectrum disorder and to promote a greater knowledge and understanding of autism. The event raise £5,500 was used to refurbish the childrens play area. In 2020 the Swimarathon is supporting Horsham Matters which is a small charity making a big impact on the local community in Horsham. Formed in 2006, Horsham Matters works to relieve hardship through the provision of essential services (food, fuel, shelter) in order to make a positive, long-lasting impact on people’s lives.

Crucial to this support in the community is providing emergency food for individuals and families through the Horsham District Foodbank and running the Horsham Night Shelter which provides homeless people with a bed and food for the winter months. Along with these services, the charity provides starter furniture for single people and couples being housed into accommodation with no possessions. Horsham Matters would like to develop a Community Hub, in which we will work together with other organisations and partner agencies to provide a ‘one stop shop’ for vulnerable residents. Part of this vision includes The Hub Café, where those that can pay do so and those that are facing financial difficulties are subsidised or eat free. The money which is raised through the Horsham Lions Club Swimarathon 2020 will go towards setting up this café and will contribute to creating a strong, safe and healthy community. Horsham Lions Club will be donating the majority of its share of monies raised from the 2020 Swimarathon and the remaining balance will be used for helping local good causes supported by Horsham Lions Club. The amount donated will include, tax recovered under Gift Aid. Swimarathon teams can consist of people aged eight to 70 upwards: • The team can include up to six swimmers plus an adult non-swimming team captain. • The first team member swims on length of the pool and then rests while the other members take turns to swim a length of 25 metres. s your wardrobe full but you have nothing to wear? Have you noticed how some people always look effortlessly stylish? Looking good is all about understanding what suits YOU. Iris Apfel said ‘‘What’s my style is not your style, and I don’t see how you can define it. It’s something that expresses who you are in your own way”. You don’t have to be rich or famous to use the services of an image consultant, just a desire to make the best of yourself. Are you creative like Lady Gaga, more natural like Kate Winslet, or perhaps classic styles are more your thing? Style Consultations consist of completing a Style Personality Questionnaire to discover the styles that you feel happier wearing and indicate what you would like to achieve. I also establish your proportions and body shape so that you understand which clothes shapes and fabrics fit. Colour analysis determines which colours of clothing and makeup harmonise with a person’s skin complexion, eye and hair colour. Colour is a clever way to instantly transform your look positively. We’ll develop a coordinated wardrobe within your budget, so you get maximum usage from it. You’ll dress with confidence whatever the occasion and reduce frustration looking for the perfect outfit. COLOURFUL PLACES

017 saw Steyning based artist Sarah Duffield have a near sell out show of her bright, uplifting and unique take on the landscape that inspires her. Now two years later she returns to Horsham Museum & Art Gallery with stunning new work that reveals how Sarah continues to develop her pallet and craft. At the heart of the exhibition, Colourful Places are four views of Horsham district, drawn from conversations had with local people about their favourite scene. Commissioned by Horsham District Council as part of the Year of Culture, the paintings are the culmination of months of work, and importantly, a first, the exhibition will focus on the steps Sarah took in creating the modern masterpieces. So as well admiring the views of; Knepp Estate and Ruin, Chesworth Farm, view from Beeding Hill and the River Arun and Chalk Pit at Amberley, the visitor can get a feel of the creative processes, the pallet selection and what to include, or leave out. It adds a real depth and interest to an exhibition that will make you see Horsham district in another light. The four original views are the District are part of a larger exhibition where Sarah showcases her recent work including Into the Arboretum, Adur Sunset, Autumn Sentinels, paintings inspired by her travels across the heart of Sussex. In 2017 one of the surprises of the exhibition were the beautifully crafted charcoal drawings, the preparatory
sketches that stood in their own terms as works of art. Horsham Museum & Art Gallery are delighted that Sarah has agreed to display some of her drawings again, monochrome images as powerful and rewarding as her colourful masterpieces. The exhibition Colourful Places – The MultiColoured District is an opportunity to admire works by a highly talented artist who has created her own vision of the world around her. Knowing only too well how popular the four views of the District will be, a limited signed print of each of the view has been produced. These will be on sale along with original works of art, in an exhibition that is one of the highlights of Horsham District Year of Culture. Colourful Places - The Multi-Coloured District by Sarah Duffield, opens on Saturday 28 September and runs till 14 December 2019. Sarah is holding a meet the artist on 5th October at 12pm – 5pm at Horsham District Council’s Horsham Museum & Art Gallery. Horsham Museum & Art Gallery is open Monday- Saturday 10am – 5pm, free admission. www.horshammuseum.org.

H
orsham District Council’s highly successful LEAP Small Business Grants programme is now open for applications until end December 2019. The current programme is targeted at the District’s small businesses and start-ups. The Council is granting funds of up to £2,000 per organisation in six tranches from June 2019 to March 2021. Once all funding is allocated, the programme will be suspended, so we are dealing with applications on a first come, first served basis. Commenting on the funds available, Horsham District Council Cabinet Member for the Local Economy Cllr Paul Clarke said: “The Council’s 2017 and 2018 LEAP funding
schemes were highly successful, supporting more than 60 local businesses who benefitted from cash injections to enable them to grow. The first round of the 2019 programme supported 38 local businesses with a grant. “I encourage local businesses and entrepreneurs wanting to start their own business to apply for funds now whilst they are still available.” Businesses applying must be based in Horsham District and be registered with HMRC and/or Companies House. BOOK REVIEW
HORSHAM DISTRICT IN 100 OBJECTS
A
land of castles, lakes and a dragon demands an amazing book to tell its story. And that is what has been crafted. Using over 230 photographs and 100,000 words, The Heritage of Horsham District in 100 objects, explores and celebrates the land that lies between Gatwick and Brighton. Using 100 objects as signposts, the book by Horsham Museum Curator Jeremy Knight and edited by Michael Burt, Chairman of the Horsham District Heritage Forum, draws on objects put forward by the Forum to tell a 100 million year old story through 13 themes and so creates a real eye opener. Very few towns in the world have a dinosaur named after it, but Horsham does, the Horshamosaurus, so that became object 1 in the list of 100. But then the story explored the telling of the other dinosaur finds in the District including the Great Horsham Iguanodon, (no 2) the inspiration for the Crystal Palace/Sydenham Park Victorian creation. However, the biggest surprise was the discovery made by the Horsham Archaeological Group of a Mural Crown Pot, (no 8) not well known in the world of Roman archaeology, but an amazing pot that combines both Roman architectural prowess and religious beliefs. This complements the Wiggonholt water cistern or water tank (no 9) bearing the Christian symbol, now on display at Parham House, which itself is one of the 100 objects. One decision made early on was that the objects did not have to be small, portable affairs, but could be man-made structures. Therefore, the Wey and Arun canal that pops in and out of the District features as no 17 in the 100 objects. The creation of a waterway from London to Portsmouth to avoid the French fleet during the Napoleonic Wars made a fascinating story and the fact that today the heritage item has been “re-purposed” as a leisure resource, provides an added
46
DEC/JAN 2020
dimension. The canal did not feature in the Transport chapter, but in Warfare along with the cannons (no 16) that were the gateposts to the Napoleonic military depot in Horsham. Obviously in a land of castles, lakes and a dragon, the castles of Knepp (14) and Bramber (13) are included, Bramber being the most prominent, Knepp, because of its military history, the stone of part of which was used to build the A24 which is another interesting story. Some stories are poignant, covering themes which resonate with the world today; such as the posters for the abolition of slavery (33), over 200 years old and yet still a contemporary issue; back then as an emotive a subject as Brexit is today. Last year the nation marked Women’s Suffrage, which was celebrated in Henfield with two mosaics; they feature in the book at number 36 along with the barely known stories of Henfield ladies’ involvement in the movement, a story that involved an American actress who settled in Henfield and entertained noted guests, as shown in the Backsettown Visitor book (37). The book, published by Horsham Museum as part of the Horsham District Council’s Year of Culture, also covers themes such as Work, from the Wealden iron firebacks (no 63) which act as a signpost to tell the heritage of the iron industry, to a poster for Walter Wood’s mower (67), a paper record of an important local industry, whilst the Patriot Engineers, a Horsham based company, established only for the duration of WWII is recorded through a commemorative brochure (68).

BOOK REVIEW As opposed to work, the chapter on Play includes cricket, the sport of the District, with over a 300 year old legacy from the earliest known local match recorded in 1719 at Henfield; the story of cricket is highlighted by an unusual shop sign (pictured right) , a set of cricket stumps (82). Its ancestor, stoolball is illustrated with a rare postcard (83) of an early 20th century match at Cowfold, and football a photograph of an amateur side, Carfax United (pictured left) from 1902-3 (84). The sport that died out, bull baiting, which in Horsham went out of fashion in 1813 is recounted using the bull ring (87). Agriculture has always been a feature of the District’s life. Therefore, from Bramber the book includes a charming portrait of George Bailey (61), whose life story stands for the life of the shepherd and farmworker. From Cowfold Capons Farm ( 55) is used to illustrate the yeoman farmer, while the Tithe Barn from Sullington Manor (57) illustrates another aspect of agricultural and farming life.

The Heritage of Horsham District in 100 Objects is a culmination of over 30 years working with the District’s heritage. It is a fascinating account and will hopefully encourage people to discover more about the area they live or work in. The book is available from 8 October from local bookshops and from Horsham Museum & Art Gallery priced £19.99. Horsham Museum is open Monday-Saturday 10am – 5pm. Admission is free.

KINGDOM OF SNOW & ICE
H
orsham Museum & Art Gallery is delighted to host Kingdom of Snow and Ice by Wendy and Michael Ball. This wonderful exhibition is filled with beautiful photographs taken by Sussex-based husband and wife, Wendy and Michael Ball. The photographs in the exhibition were taken during a visit to Svalbard located off the coast of Norway, near to the North Pole. Wendy and Michael were part of a group of just 12 photographers to get a place on the Artic trip and felt privileged to have the opportunity to capture their encounters with the amazing animals whose existence is threatened by the actions of humanity. Printed onto aluminium dibond, the photographs are crisp and clear, allowing you to imagine that you are there at the moment the image was captured. Wendy was inspired to take up photography by her father who was, himself, a keen photographer. After retiring she had the time to build her skills and begin to take photographs for pleasure. Each image is a record of that moment and has the power to transport her back to the time it was taken. Her keen eye has earned her

several Highly Commended awards in the British and Scottish Wildlife Photographer of the Year Awards. Wendy has also been shortlisted three times for the International Wildlife Photographer of the Year Awards Michael’s interest in photography stemmed from his love of wildlife and travel, and his photographs serve as poignant reminders of his visits to other countries. He credits his membership of Steyning Camera Club with honing his technical skills, and encouraging him to continue to develop his craft. Visitors can purchase their own prints of Wendy and Michael’s photographs in the museum shop. We have a range of items for sale, including images produced on aluminium and traditional mounted prints, as well as lovely range of greetings cards starting at just £2.50. The exhibition runs until Saturday 14th December 2019 in Horsham Museum & Art Gallery’s Photography Gallery. WINTER WARMTH _ó=gÉ~åÉííÉ=jÉêÅÉê
A
s days get darker and colder it’s tempting to huddle up, turn up the heating and hibernate until the winter is over. But that really is a waste, so here are some of our favourite ways to beat the winter blues. Make sure your home is efficiently heated. Being cold is miserable but sitting in t-shirts in December with the heating blazing is ridiculous. Check out the Energy Saving Trust website for tips on saving energy, money and reducing your carbon footprint. Their section on Thermostats and Controls is especially useful www.energysavingtrust.org.uk Modern heating controls, especially the digital kind you can operate from an app on your mobile, give you the ability to ‘tweak’ the heating in your home, allowing you to reduce the heat if it’s unseasonably warm, or you’re going away for a long weekend for example. Sleep soundly On a cold, grey winter’s morning getting out of bed is effort enough, but it’s even worse if you’ve had a bad night’s sleep. Overheated rooms affect quality of sleep, so a bedroom that is too warm is both wasting energy and affecting your ability to rest properly. According to The Sleep Council the ideal temperature is about 1618 degrees C. See their website for lots more tips on creating the best environment for sleep www.sleepcouncil.org.uk Snuggle up Winter months in the UK are not one consistent temperature, so flexibility is the key to getting the heat levels just right. Have an extra layer available for the bed for the coldest nights and try to buy good quality, sustainable products. You can now even get duvets filled with recycled plastic bottles, and having slept under one

recently and matching pillows, I can thoroughly recommend them! If you hunker down on an evening or weekend with a box set or the latest series on catch up, remember that you’ll tend to feel colder if you’re sitting still for a long time. Try to move around a bit (well someone has to get up and fetch the hot chocolate…) and treat your sofa to a cosy throw to avoid the temptation to turn up the heat. Get some fresh air Make the most of sunny winter days with a walk in the woods, local park or the beach. If you have a garden there are always things to do - just remember if you’re clearing up to leave plants and berries and seeds that wildlife might use for food. Get crafty Making and repairing things is a great way to beat the winter blues. Collect natural materials (and inspiration) on walks, Pinterest is full of ideas for simple artwork - you don’t need to be a great artist. Have a go at up-cycling an old piece of furniture or frame some of those holiday photos to cheer you up when it’s gloomy outside. Gradually mix in two beaten eggs and the vanilla. Knead until the dough is smooth and springy. Leave in a bowl, covered with a damp cloth and allow to rise until doubled in size. Add the sugar, butter and the yolk from the remaining egg. Mix again, either with the machine, or by hand, until the dough is smooth again. Add the fruit and zest and knead quickly until it’s all incorporated into the dough. Leave in a bowl, covered with a damp cloth, in a cool place for at least two hours until doubled in size again. You can leave it in the fridge overnight if you prefer. Line a large, six-holed muffin tray with paper cases. Divide the dough into six portions and roll into balls. Place one ball into each muffin case, cover with a damp cloth and leave for 20 minutes. Heat the oven to 180C / 160 fan or Gas mark 4. Brush the tops of the panettones with the remaining egg whites and dust with caster sugar. besity is a growing epidemic amongst our pets and can contribute to many health problems including heart disease, arthritis, diabetes, breathing difficulties, heat stroke and skin problems. Unfortunately, all of these conditions can reduce the life expectancy of our pets. Overweight pets usually develop as a result of too much food and too little exercise although age, breed and neutering can also be factors. However in some cases there are health problems that can result in a pet becoming overweight, for example dogs with an underactive thyroid. If you are concerned your pet is overweight, your veterinary practice can help you to tackle the problem. Special diets can be prescribed that aid with weight reduction in dogs and cats. Dog versions have reduced calorie and fat content but high fibre to ensure they feel full. Cats respond well to a high protein, low carbohydrate diet. There are even diets available now for both species that alter metabolic rate resulting in weight loss. Exercise is also very important in achieving a slimmer pet. For dogs regular walks, playing with toys, food search games at meal times, swimming and agility are fun ways to increase exercise. For cats encouraging them to spend time outside, playing with toys or white light pens and food dispensing balls can all be helpful. So when you are thinking about your New Year diet include your pet and work together; increasing exercise will benefit you both. Tel: 01403 791011. www.maltmancosham.co.uk

THE MEDIAEVAL BAEBES
MUSIC, DANCE AND THEATRE
M
ost recognised for their title track to the renowned ITV series Victoria, the internationally acclaimed Mediaeval Baebes are once again returning to St Mary’s Church in Horsham, where they will escort their audience through a musical journey inspired by a time when poetry and music was created to invoke sensory pleasure. But who are the Mediaeval Baebes and what has made this septet’s haunting vocal harmonies become renowned across the globe? The Mediaeval Baebes began over 20 years ago when a group of friends broke into a cemetery and sang together, clad in flowing white gowns and crowns of ivy. After 3 chart-topping classical albums, an Ivor Novello Award, numerous sell-out tours of the UK, USA, Europe and Asia, and most recently, 2 Emmy- Award nominations for their soundtrack to ITV’s hit period drama Victoria; the Mediaeval Baebes are established as one the most successful, female-led early music and folk ensembles in Europe. Performing in many stunning and historically significant venues across the world, ranging from castles and caves through to nightclubs and renaissance fayres, some of their favourites have included Hampton Court Palace, Berkley Castle, The Royal Albert Hall, Chateau de Fontainebleau in France and Carnglaze Caverns in Cornwall. In addition, the Mediaeval Baebes have also toured with Jules Holland, supported Michael Flatley in Hyde Park, performed at the The Game Of Thrones Festival in Canada and appeared as joint guests on a show with Meatloaf! This is a show that I cannot wait to see, and Katheryn Blake their musical director, composer and produce explained “Our new winter show is set to be a vibrant performance that will be moving, amusing, rousing and spell-binding. Our music comes alive when we sing in churches and cathedrals because it was designed to be sung there, so it really is mediaeval music coming home! We will be

celebrating this magical time of year by performing Christmas carol classics from our top ten album Of Kings & Angels, in addition to songs from our new album A Pocketful of Posies, the uplifting title theme for ITV’s Victoria and some other contemporary and traditional songs.” Their recently released A Pocketful of Posies album re-creates nursery rhymes as exquisitely arranged pieces for all ages to enjoy and may at first glance, appear to be a strange project to embark on. However, this album which is accompanied by a hardback book pull-out, with beautiful illustrations and an in-depth literary background on the featured nursery rhymes, celebrates the ancient teaching tools that run throughout our culture and folklore. Many of these you will be familiar with, but others have been lost in the mists of time and this edgy and mystic album has impressively created an important musical document of English folklore and history. The Mediaeval Baebes are really set to enchant and uplift their audiences in St Mary’s Church on Saturday 7th December, so don’t miss this magical experience that will immerse your senses in a timeless treat of unique musical beauty. Tickets are now available from www.mediaevalbaebes.com at a cost of £25 each. DEC/JAN 2020

His genius was capturing in a few strokes, on the back of napkins, envelopes and the more formal painting, the humour of life. He follows in the tradition of Rowlandson, but without the cutting edge.
