ow in its second year this is a major event in the club’s cricket calendar and indeed of Banstead Village as well. The chance to take on some of England’s finest cricketers was an opportunity too good to be missed. Put that together with a family fun day run in conjunction with The Children’s Trust and you have a day out that the whole family can enjoy. With the sun beating down things got underway at 10.30 when the club’s juniors had an hour’s coaching with the England players before starting a four team tournament against other local clubs. 300 club members and guests then sat down to a three course lunch whilst be regaled with

The England team was made up of former international players and included Mark Ramprakash (Strictly Come Dancing Winner), Alistair Brown, Simon Jones, Andrew Caddick, Philip De Freitas, Alex Tudor, Uzman Afzaal, Mal Loye, Owais Shah, Devon Malcolm and Dean Headley. All of whom gave great service to England during their time as professional cricketers. Throughout the day visitors enjoyed the sideshows and food outlets, took a chance on the climbing wall and enjoyed the warm and sunny afternoon. At 4pm the main game C O N T I N U E D O N PA G E 7

started with England batting first in the now familiar T20 format. Some attacking batting saw England make 197 off their 20 overs. A tough target for a young Banstead side led by captain Daniel Newton. It was Banstead’s Chairman of Cricket and former Surrey and Glamorgan star Tom Lancefield that took the game to England and his 97 not out saw him fall just short of a glorious ton and Banstead to miss out on the win by just nine runs. Following the game the England players signed autographs and posed for pictures with young and old alike. The day ended with club members, guest and visitors being entertained by a steel band. Stuart Sweetman, chairman of the Banstead History Research Group, explains how there is a clear link between our past and the smartphone app of the year. he spread of the Pokémon Go app has reached Banstead and has created a real link with our local history. Pokémon Go has become one of the world’s most downloaded app’s and is a game that has at its heart the search for Pokémon characters in your local area as recorded on Google Maps. You will see people walking around holding out their smartphones, occasionally stopping and frantically punching their screen. They will have found a character and captured it thus improving their score within the game. But they need to replenish their ‘pokéballs’ the ammunition used to capture the Pokémon. This is where the link to Banstead

History comes in. Pokéballs are to be found at ‘Pokéstops’. Got it? These are found at local points of interest and in the case of Banstead are found at the Well in Park Road, The War Memorial, the Woolpack Public House, Christ Church and All Saints Church in the High Street. These all are important places in our history. The Well in Park Road is almost 300 feet deep and was last used around 1895. It was an important part of village life until the arrival of piped water. The 18th century wellhead cover which still houses the elaborate winding gear is a listed building. Over time the structure started to develop a

severe lean and after some temporary repairs, a full restoration was commissioned in 2003. The War Memorial is at the eastern end of the High Street and has been moved a short distance from its original position for traffic reasons, when the mini roundabout was installed. The creation of the Memorial was led by the Banstead Parish Council, on whose behalf, Mr. Ralph Neville of Banstead Place, wrote to the Epsom Rural District Council in March 1919. He stated that it was desired to erect a Celtic Cross as a memorial to the villagers who had fallen in the 1914/18 War. It took some considerable time to make the necessary arrangements, including the raising of a fund by public subscription, but the memorial was completed and unveiled by General C.C Munro in 1921. Mr. Neville died in 1923 and left the sum of ÂŁ250 to the vicar and churchwardens upon trusts which included a condition that they keep the memorial in repair "with the names clearly legible". After the 1939/45 War, the names of the Villagers who fell in that War were also inscribed on the memorial. The original Woolpack Inn was built in the 17th century. In 1741 John Simmons, a soldier, was murdered by one William Thomas at the Woolpack. The landlord at this time was John Ingram, who also acted as barber

and supplied the gentry with wigs, notably John Lambert of Well Farm. When John Lambert died in March 1762 John Ingram's bill after the funeral was 13s 4d for dinner to the bearers "Beer and bacco, pudden, bread, butter, etc., for Dreassen". In the mid 1800s village life would have The War Memorial. centred largely around the Woolpack Inn, which was the place where parish business was transacted for the "Town end" of the parish. John Ingrimes, the landlord in 1820 also acted as Receiver of the Mail. During the 1920s and 30's The Woolpack came to the rescue of local buses which required topping up with water following the stiff climb from Sutton. An old watering can was stationed by the pub enabling drivers to top up the overheated radiators. On the 8th August 1944, Banstead suffered its biggest single blow of the war when the eastern end of the High Street was hit by a Flying Bomb. One man was killed and another 32 were injured. The bomb caused widespread damage and the Woolpack Inn was one of the buildings damaged beyond repair, as was the forge on the opposite side of the street. This disastrous event did have one positive effect as the Surrey County Council was asked to consider the widening of the High Street in anticipation of the traffic problems to come. The Woolpack had greatly restricted the CONTINUED ON PAGE 10

width of the High Street. The building of the new Woolpack Public House was approved in late 1955 and the old building was replaced by a new one set well back from the High Street. A Free Baptist Church was started in Banstead about the beginning of the 20th century. The first church was in a rented house called "Kylemore" in Court Road. For some years the church continued with a fairly small congregation. Later the church moved to a wood-and-corrugated iron building towards the eastern end of the High Street. During the Second World War this was damaged and services had to be held in a room at the back. With renovations, the church was officially reopened in 1948. By 1950 the membership had dwindled; but by 1959 it had risen to over 50. In 1963 and 1965 new premises were added; and in 1966 there was a renovation of the whole building. By 1970 the "tin tabernacle" had become too small for the congregation, and in 1971 a new building was erected on the site. An upper storey was added in 1976. Further premises have since been added to create the Christ Church of today. The land on which All Saints Church was built was donated by the Lord of the Manor, 10 OCTOBER 2016
HISTORY
Nigel de Mowbray, nearly a 1000 years ago. It was probably built in the 1190s. A South Chapel was added in 1837 but the original Saxon nave was significantly extended between 1861 and 1898 under the auspices of the Lambert family and Lord Egmont, then Patron of the Living. These 'restorations' under the direction of G E Street, the noted architect responsible for London's Law Courts, included the North and South Aisles, West Tower, and vestry, resulting in the building we see today. Although many of the memorials are those of the Lambert family being 'particularly attentive to their relations' which included a Lord Mayor of London, there are many more of equal distinction such as the unique and touching 17th century wall-tablet to an infant in his 'swaddling cloaths' complete with ruff! The Buckle family who provided the church's vicars for over 80 years are memorialized in several windows and the NADFAS Church Recording Project, begun in 2006, has revealed the fine quality of the stained glass windows. Not only is there one by Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co's earliest commissions (1863) employing the talents of Rossetti, Philip Webb and Morris himself, but also an unusual design by Hardman & Co famed for providing the stained glass in the Houses of Parliament. The twenty stained glass windows represent the work of the most famous designers and makers of stained glass in an era when the art was at its zenith: a very rare distinction in a small parish church. So there is a clear link between our past and the smartphone app of the year. GARDENING NEW YEAR
onty Don said recently, September is the beginning of the gardening year. It is at harvest time that we can see the success and failures of the year and plan ahead for next while the weather and daylight length is still on our side. Growth slows, but gardens are still workable and visitable and it is a fantastic time to be outside and enjoy the fresh air (a very fashionable pastime and good for the health of all ages.) At our Society the 1st October starts our membership year and it is an exciting time when we reflect on the good things we can do next year to keep members interested and learning about the growing

WI FI WOES HOT SPOT O R NOT? t’s annoying isn’t it, just when you need to send an urgent email, search for something on the web, or that last minute birthday present, the WiFi just doesn’t work in that part of the house “internet is not available” glares at you from your phone or tablet, we have all been there yes? The promises by your broadband provider on their TV ad’s of their new strength wireless router seem hollow in your house, where the signal seems to disappear down the hole, faster than proverbial rabbit in Alice in Wonderland as you move away from the WiFi router location. The reality is we live in houses of varied construction, with materials that can dampen or even block the WiFi signal entirely, not the test labs where they simulate performance. In fact every house is pretty unique in this respect of it’s WiFi footprint, so hardly surprising that we need to consider the location of the WiFi router in relationship to the rooms we live in and use most, a central point in the house would be more ideal. However most BT master sockets will have been installed on one side of the house, or if you’re really lucky right next to your brand new 4k ready TV. Now for the good news, there are many ways to improve your WiFi woes from the inexpensive to the more expensive, your choice much depends on the budget and the importance of an improved WiFi footprint, perhaps a peaceful life versus the drama when your teenage kids can’t post on Facebook. At the budget hardware end we have products called extenders, they connect to

the existing WiFi signal and retransmit signal providing an overlap, extenders are placed midway from the router and room(s) with poor signal, although low cost these can be difficult to set-up correctly, and due to the way they work the performance will typically less than connecting directly to the router, they are best avoided. Next are the HomePlug standard products providing a secondary Hot Spot in another room, they use the 230v Ring circuit as a connection back to the router, a remarkably simple and effective solution. For larger properties I’d consider a unified WiFi product, essentially multiple access points that appear as one Hot Spot, these are more expensive to deploy, but the advantages in seamless high performance WiFi provide benefits second to none, unified solutions will require a site survey so ask your professional installer for details. CHURCH ROUND-UP
AT THE HEART OF BANSTEAD
ll Saints Church is over eight hundred years old, by far the oldest building in the village, and it belongs to the people of Banstead. Over time, and for many reasons, thousands and thousands of people have come through its doors to join in the life of the church and the village. There are still so many reasons to do so today. Some visit the church today as a place of living history. See, for example, the tops of medieval pillars still unfinished today, and the stained glass window designed by Morris and Co. Come along to our annual Heritage Day, showcasing the stories of the village from days gone by. Some come through the doors of the church to join in community events. Enjoy the music of the Arts Festival, or sing songs to lift the spirits and stir the memories, at our monthly Wednesday sing-a-long ‘Sing for Joy’. Some come to All Saints burdened with a sadness or concern, or thankful for a delight in their lives. You can add a prayer to the prayer tree sparkling with light in church, or light a candle symbolizing your prayer to God. Experience the peace of a holy place, where so many have shared their joys and sadness over the years. Some arrive to share their friends and

BANSTEAD COMMUNITY CHURCH anstead Community Church has been meeting on Sundays in the Junior School in the Horseshoe for some 12 years. We believe the Good News of Jesus is just as relevant as it has ever been. However, we understand that coming to church on a Sunday morning can be daunting. Some have had bad experiences of church in the past. Others feel they have never had the opportunity to question what they hear. For these reasons we’ve been running a series of meetings called ‘Time to Think’. We meet in the comfy surroundings of Lily’s

young woman who, at the age of 12, miraculously survived a potentially fatal brain virus and woke from a coma, after doctors turned off her life-support machine, made another amazing milestone in 2015 by completing her further education to gain 16 vocational qualifications and a GCSE. When Becky Groves, from Crawley, woke from her coma she had lost the ability to walk, talk or do anything for herself. After leaving hospital, Becky was transferred to The Children’s Trust, the UK’s leading charity for children with brain injury. At the specialist centre in Tadworth, she received a tailor-made rehabilitation programme to help her make the best recovery possible. The individual programme, which incorporated physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech and language therapy, helped Becky to regain her lost life skills. Becky’s incredible recovery inspired a hugely successful annual fundraiser for The Children’s Trust, which has raised over £500,000 during the last ten years. In 2007, family friend Richard

Becky quickly became the inspiration behind the annual event, which has become one of the charity’s biggest fundraisers. The Supercar Event celebrated its 10th anniversary in July this year at the famous Top Gear track at Dunsfold Park, Cranleigh, with over 150 cars taking part to provide passenger rides to visitors. To celebrate the special anniversary, Becky took part in the opening parade lap in a fabulous red Ferrari. Becky’s mother, Jo, said: “Becky has progressed so well over the years, despite having to deal with epilepsy. To anybody who doesn’t know what Becky has gone through she just looks like any other young woman because you cannot see her disability. Becky, now 22, is keen to become more independent, so will be volunteering at one of The Children’s Trust’s charity shop in Crawley to get some work experience. When I think back to 2005, it seems like an entirely different world. WHAT’S ON BANSTEAD ARTS FESTIVAL SOCIETY
BANSTEAD & NORK OPERATIC SOCIETY
Saturday 8th October at 7.30 pm DORIC STRING QUARTET The Doric String Quartet has firmly established itself as the leading British string quartet of its generation, receiving acclaim from audiences and critics across the globe in such venues as Vienna's Musikverein, Amsterdam's Concertgebouw and Berlin’s Konzerthaus. It programmes three wonderful works: one of Haydn's later quartets, innovative and urbane, precedes Mendelssohn at his most fiery and impassioned, and the second of Beethoven's mighty Rasumovsky quartets. Saturday 19th November at 7.30 pm ALEXANDRA LOMEIKO, violin GAMAL KHAMIS, piano Alexandra Lomeiko is a rising star currently completing postgraduate studies at the Royal College of Music. A multiple prize winner at competitions in the UK and abroad, and founder of the Silk Street Sinfonia string orchestra, she is both soloist and versatile chamber musician. Her appealing programme ranges from early Beethoven to the lyrical intensity of Elgar, by way of Brahms' sunniest sonata. Tickets cost £12 (school pupils free) and may be bought at: Banstead Library, the door or www.bansteadarts.co.uk To reserve them in advance, telephone: 01737 350288 or email: marionh.bafs@hotmail.co.uk
BROADWAY BLACKOUT The concept for this way, way 'Off Broadway' review show was born from a tiny memory of the summer of 2003 when a real-life blackout stranded around 50 million people in North America and Southern Canada for up to 2 days (for some even longer!). For most of us going to see a show is a truly special event, a treat, a surprise and a gift. However, back in 2003, all the Broadway shows were sadly cancelled on 'The Great White Way'. 'Broadway Blackout' explores the idea of what could happen if history repeated itself, but this time the show 'does go on'. With a selection of music from current Broadway shows including brand-new musicals and timeless favourites, this show promises to entertain you in true Broadway Style...
