DEVELOPMENT AT ROOKWOOD
H
ousing development in Horsham and the surrounding district is becoming an increasingly thorny subject. On page 12 you can read about the ‘Keep Rookwood Green Aliance’ (KRGA) that has been recently formed in response to the proposal to build 1,100 dwellings at Rookwood Golf Course, one of the ‘strategic sites’ in the Local Plan consultation. The KRGA believe that the Rookwood site should be retained as a green space to provide leisure and recreational opportunities for both the local community in Horsham town and those from further afield. The KRGA argue this proposal threatens Warnham Local Nature Reserve, which is adjacent to Rookwood, through noise and light pollution, increased predation by cats and by severing the
Reserve’s wildlife corridors to the west. It would be isolated within urban development and argue it will axe a popular amenity, destroy a valued green space and damage one of the most biodiverse sites in Sussex. KRGA are urging residents to sign their petition and write to your local councillor by visiting www.keeprookwoodgreen.org Clearly any proposed development will divide opinions with the need for housing being weighed against the need to protect the countryside and prevent the ever increasing strain on services. Please write to me with your opinions regardless of which side of the arguement you stand? Richard Milbourn, Editor E: editor@carnahpublications.com

LOCKDOWN
LOCKDOWN IN SOUTHWATER Connor Barclay who recently graduated from the University of Portsmouth and has lived in Southwater all his life looks at the impact of Lockdown in Southwater.
O
n the 23rd of March, our lives were changed when Boris Johnson announced on television the lockdown measurements taking place in order to save lives and protect the NHS. A chilling time for us all. We began to see the effects of the lockdown all around us as shops closed, the streets became quieter, and police started enforcing lockdown rules with heavy fines to anyone who broke them. The uncertainty struck fear into everyone’s hearts, causing them to panic shop for every bottle of hand soap and loaf of bread they could get, avoid anyone they saw in the street, and wear a mask every time they went outside. I’m sure there are some that avoided going outside entirely. It was a scary, tough transition period. Southwater was no exception to this. I remember the lines that used to stretch outside the local shops, and how the shelves seemed devoid of goods. We weren’t able to meet up with anyone outside of our own homes, and going outside was permitted only to buying essentials and getting exercise. It took a lot of getting used to. But in many ways, we had advantages over other people affected by the virus. For starts, we had something that most weren’t fortunate to have during lockdown: freedom. We weren’t trapped in a city where a public park was our only retreat. We are a rural community with so many fields and woodlands to travel through during our time in lockdown. The Down’s Link became a popular place for cyclists and dog walkers to stretch their legs. If we want

fresh air without getting in anyone’s way, we need only walk a few steps outside our front door. I remember seeing friends all the time during my walks. Thanks to the wide-open spaces, there was never a risk of anyone getting too close to spread the virus. We were socially distant, but we were never truly isolated. If anything, this only strengthened our bonds. Seeing everyone getting on with things reminded us that we were all in this together. This was further emphasised when we all clapped in the streets for the NHS every Thursday, and how we celebrated Victory Day with our neighbours at a safe distance. Our shops were quick to adapt too. The brave staff were quick to refill the shelves and emphasise the rules regarding purchases and social distancing in order to keep us all safe. Now, because of us all working together, we see very few lines outside our shops. Most of the time, you can just walk right on in. And now as we make it through our third month of lockdown, normality seems to be slowly returning. Shops are beginning to reopen lockdown regulations have been eased, and the days seem to be passing by quicker. But most importantly, we’re able to see friends and loved ones again, albeit at a safe distance. I see this as an important time to take advantage of the luxuries we have. Now’s a good a time as ever to reunite and remember what is most important. Stay healthy and stay connected. We are all in this together. Connor Barclay

KEEP ROOKWOOD GREEN ALLIANCE
I
n the recent Local Plan consultation Horsham District Council (HDC) proposed several ‘strategic sites’ for future housing developments. One of these is
Rookwood Golf Course where they propose to build 1100 high-density dwellings, up to five storeys high. The Covid-19 emergency has emphasised how access to local green space is vital for physical and mental wellbeing. Given the impact the proposals would have on the areas adjacent to Rookwood Golf Course, the “Keep Rookwood Green Alliance” (KRGA) has been formed from local groups. We (KRGA) believe that the Rookwood site should be retained as a green space to provide leisure and recreational opportunities for both the local community in Horsham town and those from further afield. This proposal threatens Warnham Local Nature Reserve, which is adjacent to Rookwood, through noise and light pollution, increased predation by cats and by severing the Reserve’s wildlife corridors to the west. It would be isolated within urban development. HDC does need to produce a Local Development

TELEPHONE BUDDY SCHEME A LIFELINE Earl, a patient under the care of St Catherine’s Hospice, has been speaking to volunteer, Graham, once a week as part of St Catherine’s new Telephone Buddy scheme. The scheme was recently set up to make sure patients, who’ve temporarily had to stop attending the hospice’s Living Well Centre, remain connected to St Catherine’s by having a regular, social call with a volunteer. Here Earl and Graham share their experiences of the scheme.

GARDEN VIEW
LOCKDOWN MUSINGS
B
ack in May garden centres became some of the first businesses allowed to reopen to the public. For gardeners stuck at home (even though we understood and supported the lockdown), it's been a frustrating time. We've been unable to plant during one of the best springs I can ever remember. And for many of the UK's growers it has been devastating. Millions of lost plants nurtured to be at their best by Easter were lost. The scale of the issue was mind-boggling. Garden centres and nurseries usually make the bulk of their income during the early growing season as people prepare their plots for the summer but instead they've been forced to compost or recycle millions of plants, leaving one in three growers in serious financial difficulties, with little possibility of recouping their losses later in the year. I was glad to see nurseries and garden centres reopening and in spite of my own apprehension about venturing out, I decided to go to my local garden centre reasoning that the open outdoor spaces meant transmission of coronavirus was less likely and it would be easier to maintain social distancing. There were staff in the car park and the queue markings were 2m apart. The trolleys were cleaned before being handed to the customers and social distancing was observed throughout the one-way system. There were fewer plants on display which puzzled me for a second until I realised that

growers couldn't take the risk of planting a few weeks before when they had no idea whether they would have to destroy those plants too. Such a heart-breaking decision for them to have to make. My own garden has been a source of solace throughout lockdown, but what has been particularly nice is the number of people who have discovered gardening during this period. There is a lot of psychological research which concludes that nurturing plants and flowers diverts our attention away from stresses and anxieties in our lives and goodness knows there's been way too much stress and anxiety recently. So, as we hit July is there anything easy which you can still plant, and which will still grow? The good news is yes. Nasturtiums can be sown throughout this month. They are known for their brightly coloured flowers and attractive foliage. There are trailing, climbing, and dwarf varieties. The showy flowers can be single or double and come in fiery shades of reds, oranges, and yellows. Leaves are pale green and umbrella-shaped with long stems. They are the perfect flowers for beginner gardeners so if the kids have been dying to have a go at gardening these are your go-to plant. Sow the seeds and within 7-10 days, you should see sprouting. They are drought tolerant and ideal for hanging baskets and containers. Even better, you can add the flowers, buds and young leaves to salads, and they have the most wonderful peppery taste. Love-in-the-mist are easy to grow and have distinctive seed heads. These can be sown until early July and also again in September so they will get a head start for next year. And of course, you can still plant sunflowers. Who doesn't love a sunflower? Plant one for each member of the family and see whose grows the most. You could give prizes for the tallest, the prettiest or the largest flower. Happy gardening,

ELECTRIFICATION OF THE RAILWAY Jeremy Knight from Horsham Museum & Art Gallery has written this article on how the trains were electrified and the impact it had on Horsham
T
oday we take electric trains for granted. In fact it is a bit of a shock to find, when travelling north, that the trains are still diesel as the line to Horsham has been electric for over 80 years. It is equally remarkable that such a large investment was made in electrifying the railway in the years following the Great Depression. However, electrification went hand in hand with the growing housing market, and the expansion of the entire electric grid, as electricity began to power industry and not be used simply for lighting. In effect the electrification of the railways provided the core infrastructure for commuters in a distinct contrast to today’s ever expanding road network. As accounts of the day show, electrification wasn’t straightforward, and did take some time to reach fruition. The whole question of electrification was not as simple as an outsider would imagine. For a start, what method do you use; the third line, or overhead cables? Overhead cables were safer for maintenance workers who might stumble on the

track, and reduced the risk of conductor rail icing up and breaking the contact. However, the third rail was a lot cheaper and a lot of the South Eastern rail network had been built cheaply and as such many tunnels and road bridges didn’t have the headroom to take the overhead wiring. “The third-rail system therefore had the advantage that it could be applied throughout the Southern Railway and, since it was cheaper and simpler to fit” therefore, it was adopted. One of the first lines to be electrified was Waterloo to Guilford and Dorking, which was completed in 1925. There was then a 12 year hiatus before the line was electrified to Horsham and beyond. But why change to electrically powered railways? After all this was not an era of green thinking. Electrification “allowed for much faster acceleration and breaking, which meant that capacity on the railway could be greatly increased and trains could call at more stops within the same timetable”. In addition every line that was

electrified saw passenger numbers increase. Electrification generated jobs, so much so that, in 1931, the Government thought of introducing it nationally. Unfortunately the cost of £261m was considered too expensive even though it was thought to generate a 7% return. It is not surprising then that the Horsham looked forward to the announcement of electrification, and when it came it was covered in full in the local press. However, whilst the electrification of the track was essential, what grabbed local imaginations was the rebuilding of the railway station. In December 1937 the County Times ran an article under the heading “£100,000 Railway Station for Horsham”, which went in to some interesting detail: “The building of Horsham’s new railway station which will be one of the most important events in the history of the town during the New Year is to cost about £100,000. It is hoped to have it erected by next December, four months after the completion of the electrification of the lines from London to Portsmouth, via Horsham. Involving 76 route miles, the electrification scheme is costing the company nearly £3,000,000” The newspaper went on to describe, in glowing terms, that: “Everything will be on the most modern lines, pleasing to everyone…the front of the station will face the center of the town instead of the junction
of North-Street and Hurst road as it does at present…there will be a commodious hall and larger booking office, with the approach to the platforms behind, and these platforms will be like a one sided then two long, broad islands. The platforms between the lines will be approached by a bridge with stairways, instead of the present subway, and there will also be an entrance, as formerly from Station Road. On each platform, waiting rooms, restaurants and convenience will be provided.” When, in May 1938, the first electric train arrived in Horsham the local paper covered it in great detail, and with much excitement. The train arrived at Horsham at 10.17am, it then: “was run on to all the sidings on the east side of the station, and then the up line to Three Bridges was tested. A second run was made to Horsham and this time the train ran on to the other down line platform….After a short halt at Amberley the train returned to Horsham and then went on to Warnham up line. At Warnham it returned to Horsham, then to Amberley again, returning to Warnham, back to Horsham and then to Three Bridges. The train was watched by many people in houses cottages and fields, as it passed, sometimes at 50mpoh or 60mph…During the week residents along the newly electrified line have seen several electric trains running between Three Bridges and

e have been affected by a pandemic, Covid19 which has rocked the world, yours and ours! It has for the time being curtailed the rest of our 2020 calendar. Despite our sadly losing three long standing members, Joyce, Stan 'the man' and Dennis 'the menace' and new member, Reg, all of whom had been unwell for some time - the rest of us appear to remain as well as can be. It is our 60th birthday year and in lieu of our planned celebration, some background of how the Club was formed. Paddy Pedoe resident in Southwater for 13 years became interested in forming a club for people aged 60+ years. The Southwater Welcome Club commenced on 17 March 1960 and Paddy became the Leader with Betty Piper as Secretary/Treasurer. Many joined the fortnightly meetings taking part in activities such as jumble sales, bring & buy, Christmas sales and handy crafts which the men did too - these were entered in competitions and cooking was 'in house'! Oh and Frank Setford made the gavel for 'Attention please!' After Paddy moved away, Betty took over with Winnie Selmes as Secretary/Treasurer. Betty was at the helm for 34 years and on her retirement Pat Botting took charge and Winnie remained Secretary/Treasurer. Subsequently Kris Massie took over as Secretary and Don Pavis as Treasurer. Pat retired after 9 years and Don did too. Deborah Bailey became Leader, Kris still scribbles and Teresa Longdon as Treasurer. In time women could work past the age of 60. Fortunately membership remains good and is still open to men and women. We also subsequently lowered the joining age to 55 to hopefully attract more members. While we currently cannot meet we keep in touch with members and are itching get back Please mention SOUTHWATER Life when responding to adverts

tchy cats and dogs is a problem presented to us almost every day. Some of these cases will have been chronically itchy and this more often than not is due to a condition called atopy, which means the animal has an allergy to either fleas, food or environmental allergens such as pollen. It can be an incredibly frustrating disease for owners, vets and pets, but with a little patience can have a very successful outcome. It is not unusual for an animal to have allergies to more than one thing. These allergens may ‘add up’ and cause worsening of signs. Treatment of atopy is divided in to 6 main areas. 1. Flea control—allergic animals only need 1 bite to set them off itching. 2. Control of house dust/storage mites—this includes frequent vacuuming using a hoover with a special micro filter to trap the mites and stop them dispersing around, avoid contact with dirty washing/washing baskets and wiping their faces after eating to remove the dusty material associated with dry food. 3. Control of pollens—very difficult but you may find some areas are less pollenated and washing your dog after a walk may help. 4. Drug therapy—including steroids, oclacitinib, cyclosporine, antihistamines, essential fatty acids, antibiotics and medicated shampoos. 5. Immunotherapy—an injectable therapy involving formulation with the allergens involved. 6. Elimination diets. The most important thing to remember is that it is often a combination of the above that is required for best control. Atopy is a complicated disease so if you are worried then please to speak to one of the vets for more details. saucepan and heat until it almost reaches boiling point. Pour this coconut milk mixture in a slow stream over the egg yolks and sugar, whisking constantly. Rinse out the saucepan (important to stop any burning and tainting of the ice cream) and return to a low heat. Pour in the custard mixture and stir in the desiccated coconut. Continue to stir constantly for 5-10 mins until the custard thickens slightly and you can trace a line through it with a wooden spoon. Pour into a bowl and cover the surface of the custard with cling film...to prevent a skin forming), allow to cool, then chill for 30 mins. At this point you can use your ice cream maker according to the manufacturer's instructions. If you don't have an ice cream maker transfer the chilled custard to a small freezer-safe container with a lid and freeze for 1 hr, then use a fork or electric whisk to really churn through the ice cream to break up the ice crystals so that the mixture is the same consistency all the way through. Pop it back into the freezer for another 2-3 hrs, whisking it about every half hour, then cover the surface with a sheet of cling film and freeze with the lid on until as firm as ice cream. Take out of the freezer 10 mins before serving so it’s easy to scoop.
