That’s because each appliance has been designed for optimal performance and aesthetic detail: racks move with the touch of a finger, cooking surfaces are unobtrusive and clean easily, touch panels disappear, and refrigerators and dishwashers work quietly. Available in a bold Professional Series and a graceful Designer Series, Electrolux ICON® appliances can help you create kitchens people will never want to leave. Chairman's Message

Design for a Cause As you enter the 39th Annual Kips Bay Boys and Girls Club Decorator Show House, you will be welcomed by a sense of something quite extraordinary. It is with great pleasure that I invite you into our 2011 house, which beckons to one of New York City’s most magnificent and optimistic eras. Located on a historic block, this splendid house has had an illustrious life. The original gem was created by architect Frederick Sterner in 1919 for clothier Maurice Brill. Sterner was known for beautifying entire city blocks and reclaiming dingy old row brownstones by using tinted stucco, tile roofs and iron balconies. The house was later owned and remodeled by John Hay “Jock” Whitney and so many of his dazzling and accomplished friends passed through its doors. I would like to extend a special thanks to the Deane family for allowing us to use this very special house. This year’s astounding team of designers is no less rich in history, accreditations and contributions to the community. Together they have transformed this historic house and brought it to a new level of glamour with the generosity of their time, dedication and talent. Our Show House is not only a bellwether of creativity but also a source of critical funds for the Kips Bay Boys and Girls Club, which serves over 12,000 talented young people. It is not only a safe haven for our members, but it is also a place for mentoring opportunities, learning life skills and building lasting friendships. Your continued support resonates through so many lives. Kips Bay Boys and Girls Club is truly “designing” our future through our youth. Every year this event strives to deliver something new and fresh by challenging our designers to stretch beyond their already glorious capabilities to raise the bar and the hopes of many. Thank you for visiting our Show House and being a part of our vision and the vision of so many in our shared community.

Kindly,

Mrs. W. Ward Carey

WORTH?

How is worth measured? Is it simply total assets minus total liabilities? At U.S. Trust, we believe affluence should be measured not only by net worth, but by the things in life that take on a worth all their own. And we apply our intellectual resources and financial acumen toward helping clients realize that worth. Because we believe you deserve more than wealth management — you deserve worth management. President's Message

MILESTONES Welcome to the yearly East Side rite of spring that is the Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club Decorator Show House! Our signature event, our single largest fund raising activity, is an enormous undertaking. Each year, astonishingly, it all comes together. It does so through the love and labor of hundreds of patrons, volunteers, designers, and staff members. Add thousands of visitors, and the annual miracle is complete. I thank each and every one of you. My association with “The Bay” - as generations of youngsters have fondly called their Club - began 31 years ago. With that span of time logged, I find myself thinking about some of the many milestones, expressed numerically, that speak to our longevity, our accomplishments, and our challenges as well. Let me share with you just a few of the milestones that I reflect on as we gear up for the 2011 Show House: 96 — years in the mission of improving lives of youngsters, ages 6 to 18. 41 — years in the Bronx, having relocated from the Manhattan clubhouse on East 52nd Street in order to serve a much larger pool of youngsters. 39 — years of the Decorator Show House, recognized as the finest in the nation. 10 — years that we labored to build our new Frederic R. & Margaret Coudert Clubhouse, adding to expenses, despite reductions in charitable giving and government funding. 12,500 — annual club members enrolled at 10 locations throughout the Bronx. I know that you, who have taken a few minutes to read this message, care deeply for the positive development of children and young people in our city. You can join me, and 24 active and 12 honorary trustees, by getting involved. No one in the charity world ever recalls rejecting a check, but your participation will generate so much more satisfaction. Contact me at 212-867-8873 or paulross@westoverasset.com to discuss what you and I can do together – even at the trustee level. May that call be a milestone in your life, and for thousands of current and future club members.

Paul H. Ross President of the Board of Trustees

Executive director’s message

buildinG our children Since I wrote to our Kips Bay Show House supporters in the fall of 2010 Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club has continued to impact young people in a comprehensive manner. There are more than 12,000 children we will serve this year at the club that will be exposed to programs ranging from job readiness training, educational enhancement services, youth empowerment training along with drug prevention services, and a large dose of healthy lifestyles and healthy living. Our mission continues to be to improve and enhance the quality of life for all young people 6-18 so they can realize and achieve their potential for growth, development and attain the skills necessary to succeed. Recently I had the good fortune of taking part in Kips Bay’s Youth of the Year Program. Here we judge youngsters in various empowerment categories and the winner represents the organization at a National Youth of the Year competition. One young lady was asked what Kips Bay meant to her and she stated: “Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club is more than just a club to me. It’s more like a home away from home my second family! Becoming a member at this club was like entering a huge family of acceptance, understanding, and reliability. I know that as long as I’m a member I will always have a safe place to go to after school. “This club is amazing, it’s a safe haven for everyone to attend, it offers programs and opportunities to help keep us motivated, on the right track, off the streets, and focused on our futures. I have never been part of such an amazing organization that has cared so much for me, and has offered me once in a lifetime memories, and opportunities. There are not enough words to express how grateful I am to my parents for signing me up at the club. I absolutely love this Boys & Girls Club; it has created the best memories in my childhood. I’ll always remember it!” What a testimonial! It reminds me of what the Pulitzer Prize winning educator Robert Coles said: “We must form the character and sharpen the awareness of youth during those critical early years when moral and character development can be influenced most. In educating our children in basic character development we can teach them to be as compassionate as they will be successful. If we don’t do this, all the prosperity in the world isn’t going to produce a worthwhile human being.” Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club plays a prominent role in sending such valuable lessons. Over the past 96 years we’ve been able to produce positive contributors to society and have paved the way for thousands of children in New York City and the Bronx. As a former member and present Executive Director, I’ve experienced firsthand how Kips Bay impacts the life of a child. As an alumnus and youngster growing up at the Club, I had no idea how the Kips Bay Show House impacted my life personally. Years later, I’m fortunate enough to recognize that through the financial support generated by the Kips Bay Show House, many thousands of children will enjoy the same opportunities I had growing up in the Bronx at Kips Bay. Today, I gratefully salute the Board of Directors, committees, designers and you, our donor public, who, with your generosity and labor, continue to support an organization that’s been serving youth since 1915. I thank you on behalf of our more than 12,000 members for helping to keep Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club alive and in place now and for years to come.

Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club announces the

frederic R. & Margaret Coudert clubhouse OPENED JUNE 2010

We thank the Trustees of the Frederic R. Coudert Foundation:

Margaret Coudert Cynthia Coudert Sandra Coudert May the lives of the children who enter this building, now and for generations to come, be enhanced. May they learn, within these walls, that the highest measure of service, is to pass along, freely and joyfully, all the good that they found here, in their families, and in their community.

74

KB11 Editorial_FINAL_PREPRESS.indd 15

4/4/11 1:50 PM

WITHIN THESE WALLS The magic is in the wonder and aspirations of children, in the hopes of their families, in the commitment of professional staff who mold lives, in the passion for Boys & Girls Clubs of donors, and in the living symphony of all that together make Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club. Here, in images and captions, is a glimpse of our new Clubhouse in operation:

Staff member Michelle Vasquez (left) inspects Book Club selection with Bryan Infante and Osiris Guzman. Book Club, a requirement of the education department, is our unabashedly retro paean to the horizon-expanding pure joy of reading.

(l.to r.) Ashley Monahan, Saysha Mesa, Krisalys Paulino and Keishla Monahan enjoy doing their homework together in the education’s floor’s spacious and attractive multipurpose room. 75

KIDS MAKE THE NEWS

(l. to r.) Kimberly Tejada, Breanna Garcia, Owaoma Okwu-Uwa and Onyeka Uwa are on the team that creates the Coudert Clubhouse newspaper, "KIDS PRESS.” Youngsters select, research and write stories, take photos, create the layout on computer, copy and collate, and distribute.

Performing arts instructor, Marisa Vural, leads her improvisation class in warm-up stretching exercises in the Coudert Clubhouse’s lively performance space. Multi-lingual Marisa has performed at Avery Fisher Hall and taught children at Harlem Children’s Zone before coming to Kips Bay 76

Please consider a Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club named gift

(l. to r.) Paul H. Ross, Manny Villafana, Elizabeth Villafana, Daniel Quintero.

Above Honorary Trustees Manny & Elizabeth Villafana appear at the May 2010 dedication of the “Manny & Elizabeth Villafana Game Room” in the Coudert Clubhouse.

In recent years, Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club’s investments have been greatly reduced by capital projects, operating expenditures necessary to hold service cuts at the minimum possible level, and the steep decline in markets from the 2007 peak. Your named gift builds our endowment and not only helps keep a growing Kips Bay financially healthy but insures that our doors are open and our staff responsive to over 12,000 children each year. Won’t you consider the opportunity to have your name or a loved one’s name memorialized at Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club??

MANY NAMED-GIFT OPPORTUNITIES REMAIN

THANK YOU 77

KIPS BAY BOYS & GIRLS CLUB SALUTES THE

NEW YORK YANKEES We thank the Yankees for their very generous gifts, for welcoming our special events to the new Yankee Stadium, and for sending Yankee players to coach and mentor Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club members. The Yankees are good neighbors who support numerous Bronx youth and service organizations, and donate thousands of tickets to youngsters served by these organizations. The Yankees stayed ! … in New York’s poorest borough, with the nation’s poorest Congressional District. For years – prior to the magnificent new Yankee Stadium – there was talk of leaving to new venues, outside of the Bronx, even in another state. In 1957 a baseball team left Brooklyn. People still talk about it … how it ripped the soul of New York’s largest borough … how the void left by “the Boys of Summer” has never truly healed.

THE BRONX BOMBERS STAYED.

THANK YOU

kips bay boys and girls club be great - At the club Dear Friends and Patrons of the Show House, You've seen Boys & Girls Clubs of America's slogan, "Be Great," adorning bill board along with an image of a youthful Denzel Washington, our national spokesman, who attended the Boys & Girls Club of Mount Vernon as a youngster. It is a perfect message because it captures, in just two words, the opportunity that awaits every child who comes to us. I trust that the images and comments that follow in this section of the Journal will convey to you that Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club truly is the safe and positive place where 12,000 plus youngsters this year can strive to be great. I invite you to help. At the end of this section you will find my phone and e-mail. I am always happy to speak with you and to welcome you as a partner. Thank you for coming to "our house." REMEMBERING A GIANT

No American of the 20th Century exemplified greatness more than Jackie Robinson, who broke baseball’s color line in 1947. His story is one that every youngster should know. That is why we were delighted to welcome his daughter, Sharon Robinson (left), and Gina Hemphill of MLB network (and daughter of track legend, Jessie Owens), who brought a baseball clinic to Kips Bay on Jackie Robinson Day 2010.

CITI GAME AT “THE BAY”

We call it “Basketball Academy” and it is our program to teach fundamentals to youngsters, ages 6 to 10. Participants receive a uniform, warm-up shirt, carrying bag, and a certificate and medal at the completion ceremony. Above Jaylene Brown, age 10, runs a drill designed to teach youngsters to keep their hands high on defense. 109

MaKoS Surging

When Aquatics Director dwayne lindo joined Kips Bay four years ago he found that our travelling swim team, the Kips Bay Makos, had been defunct for three years. That changed in a hurry. In year one 13 youngsters participated. Currently we have 61 enthusiastic Mako members. As this is written they have just returned from a competition in Washington, D.C., where our boys placed first. Dwayne’s love of aquatics is deeply personal. When his mom died in her sleep in his 14th year, Dwayne found comfort in his local pool, even though he didn’t swim. But he quickly learned and was a life guard at 16, and soon after a Red Cross certified life guard instructor. Competitive swimming, he says, teaches discipline, self-confidence and the work ethic – all of which extend into other life arenas. Our pool is busy. In addition to the Makos team members, 375 youngsters take swimming instruction in an average year. More than 800 come for recreational swimming, including club members from our homeless shelter, Housing Authority and school sites, and summer day campers.

In the latter capacity Nigel has teamed with PBS’ “Angelina Ballerina” to give dance scholarships. venuS in tHe HouSe Tennis superstar venus Williams was a recent visitor on behalf of the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness & Nutrition and Boys & Girls Clubs of America. Ms. Williams charmed and inspired youngsters and staff alike with warmth, graciousness and a message of hard work, healthy living and education as the keys to success. After Venus led young club members in exercises and took their questions, she patiently posed for pictures with any youngster who wished -- and that was every child in attendance. At right she engages with a delighted youngster who had drawn Venus’ picture in anticipation of the visit. The Williams’ visit is a continuation of ongoing Kips Bay programming to combat the rising tide of youth obesity, which is much accentuated in our borough of the Bronx. We feature family fitness nights with healthy cooking demonstrations, speaker/mentors, farmers’ market visits, and our swimming-based exercise and nutrition education program called “ Get Fit/Get Light” . As our nation fights youth obesity Boys & Girls Clubs are on the front line. Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club is proudly among them.

he lavish homes that line the streets of the Upper East Side make it difficult to imagine that the property they stand on was once considered insignificant by Manhattan’s aristocracy. Most who lived in New York City were unable to traverse the undeveloped country side above midtown except on foot or horseback. The land above 60th Street was either vacant or occupied by farmlands, not at all what we picture today when we think of the neighborhood east of Central Park.

In 1919, the house was purchased by notable Manhattan resident, Maurice Brill, a clothier and owner of the famous Brill Building. Brill had a different vision for the brownstone and hired renowned architect Fredrick Sterner, designer of such buildings as the Greenbrier Hotel and the Barbara Rutherford Hatch House. Sterner transformed several streets in New York during this period into what was dubbed “beautiful blocks," taking rundown row houses and drab brownstones and renovating them into colorful stucco Spanish Renaissance inspired masterpieces. The home was extended into the adjoining lot of 165. The facade was covered with ruff tinted stucco and an inlayed red brick design. This scheme was intensified on the rear of the building, which Sterner thought to be even more of a focus than the front of a home. However, the Brill House that Sterner created was not a permanent design for the home. In 1955,

Not much had changed about the area until the 1860’s when streets were extended as far as 86th Street. Carriages and streetcars had expanded their reach further uptown making the property accessible and profitable. A speculative real estate bubble during the time had land prices rising as high as 200% above their original value. These attractive plots of land had the wealthy of Manhattan flocking to the area east of Central Park to create opulent family homes. The townhouse located at 163 East 63rd Street was originally part of a plan of six buildings designed and developed by New York Architect Nathaniel J. Burchell. Upon completion in 1870, the four story, single fam-

proposals, Mrs. Parish at last found success by placing rustic honey colored painted shutters over the windows and, with a more traditional design, transforming the large room into a luxurious, cozy, comfortable great room where paintings by Picasso, Toulouse-Lautrec and Gauguin hung from the walls and varying shades of pastel blues showed up on needlework pillows and throws. Currently, the home, owned by the Deane family, purchased in 1985 by the family’s late patriarch, Disque D. Deane. Mr. Deane, a financier, real estate investor and philanthropist, at one time controlled the General Motors Building, shopping centers in New York, Massachusetts and Georgia, and the nation’s largest federally subsidized housing complex, Starrett City in Brooklyn. The Deane family has generously opened their home to host the 2011 Kips Bay Decorator Show House. This remarkable home is currently listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

John Hay (Jock) Whitney, titan of the financial world, United States Ambassador to the United Kingdom and one time owner of the New York Herald Tribune, purchased the home and hired architect Ellery Husted to redesign the front. Husted smoothed out the stucco and covered the façade with a subdued Neo-Federal brick design. As Mr. Whitney abandoned Sterner’s vision for the residence, he added his own touches that were of architectural importance. The house’s library, constructed of Norfolk pine, was transported from the English countryside home that Whitney occupied while Ambassador. It is rumored that Whitney, a trustee to the Museum of Modern Art, contracted fellow trustee and museum advisor Phillip Johnson, creator of the Glass House in Connecticut, to rework the fourth floor. The end result was a modern glass room that was starkly decorated with Barcelona chairs and white walls. Though an adventurous project, this room was not at all the style that Mr. Whitney and his wife Betsy desired. The seminal interior decorator, Sister Parish, came to the rescue. Working through three failed

Wu Wei: Wu Wei refers to the cultivation of a state of being in which our actions are quite effortlessly in alignment with the ebb and flow of the elemental cycles of the world. It is a kind of “going with the flow” that is characterized by great ease in which - without even trying we’re able to respond perfectly to whatever situations arise. This garden ties together qualities from the adjoining rooms and neighboring garden. Inspired by the hand painted Chinese wallpaper in the dining room, this garden is an effortless blend of its surrounding elements, culminating in a clean modern aesthetic that is abstracted from Chinese garden design and philosophy.
