IMMIGRATION OUTREACH THROUGH SOCCER ATTRACTS YOUNGSTERS FROM

MEXICO, EQUADOR & HONDURAS

Javier Valeriano (back row center), founder of HonduBronx Soccer League for children, poses with some of the teams participating in a February 2016 clinic at our Castle Hill Houses center.

Our outreach to immigrants continues as an ongoing Kips Bay initiative. We have developed a wonderful partnership with the Islamic Leadership School, led by Guyanaborn Shireena Drammeh. Her husband Sheikh Moussa Drammeh, from West Africa, is the leader of the Al-Iman Mosque in Parkchester. We have found four Latino Bronx leaders who -- unheralded and using their own resources -- are conducting soccer programs for children. Happily, Kips Bay has been able to provide the space that they lack. The four are: the Mexican-American father and son team of Martin and Jesus Sorza, Leo Loor from Ecuador, and Javier Valeriano from Honduras. We thank The Pinkerton Foundation for their generous support of immigrant outreach. MISSION Our mission is to enrich the quality of life for young people by providing educational and developmental programs, with special emphasis on youngsters, ages 6 to 18, who come from disadvantaged or disenfranchised circumstances. President's Message

ON TO CENTURY TWO Dear Friends, Patrons and Volunteers: I am honored and delighted to greet you as President of the Board of Trustees of this phenomenal institution. As we continue to celebrate our centennial, our mission remains as it was just 100 years ago, to “enrich and enhance the quality of life for all young people by providing educational and developmental programs, with special emphasis on youngsters between the ages of 6 and 18 who come from disadvantaged or disenfranchised circumstances. We realize this mission annually for more than 10,000 youngsters at 2 clubhouses, 2 housing projects, 3 public schools, a rustic camp and 2 homeless shelters. And we do it well. We are considered a flagship for the Boys & Girls Club Movement. We are very focused on Outcome Measurement. Our latest results continue to show that Kips Bay youngsters outperform their district school and grade-level peers on state tests. Our high school graduation rate continues to exceed that for Bronx high schools our teens attend, and 90% of our seniors graduate from high school. We are focused, not on our past, but on future generations of children. We are continuing the public phase of our centennial campaign to ensure that Kips Bay remains vital. Our plans include additional space for younger members; a new education center; building a digital fine arts center; creating new initiatives to improve high school graduation rates in the Bronx and much more. To date, we have raised over $6 million and hope to surpass our goal of $10 million. By supporting Kips Bay you help the Club fulfill its mission and achieve its goals. Through friendship, generosity and voluntary leadership, you help Kips Bay reach out and help youngsters who need us most. I thank you on behalf of our staff and Board of Trustees and, above all, the thousands of children that we serve.

James P. Druckman President

IMAGES FROM "THE BAY" Hello Friends, Trustees and Patrons of Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club, I’m happy and honored to address you in this forum for the first time in our second century, which is also my 20th year of having the privilege of serving as Chief Professional Officer of this institution. Each year in this space we try to give our friends, patrons and alumni a glimpse into our programming for 10,000 plus youngsters in the Bronx. They attend Kips Bay for programming in education and career development, health and life skills, sports and fitness, character and leadership development and the arts. Most of the children call their club, “The Bay.” It is their home away from home. In the ensuing pages you will observe images that exemplify how we impact children’s lives. Our hope is that you will gain an appreciation for the importance of our work and the need that exists among the communities we serve. These are the faces of the young lives that we touch every day. May seeing them make you pleased with your support of “The Bay.” Enjoy. Daniel Quintero Lucile Palmaro Clubhouse June 2016

CIVIC and LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT “A Day for Equality”

We recognize our responsibility to prepare youngsters for an America of increasing diversity. Indeed, the U. S. Census Bureau calls the Bronx the most diversified county in the nation. Our recent “Day for Equality” event was a civic and leadership development activity that was attended by students from the nearby Islamic Leadership School, students from the Solomon Schechter School in Manhattan, and Kips Bay youngsters. Islamic Leadership School youngsters come to the Palmaro Clubhouse each Friday for a physical education field day, transported by Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club vans. Our partnership is ongoing.

EDUCATION PROGRAM Reading Club

Public education in the Bronx is in a sorry state. In District 9, where our Coudert Clubhouse is located, an egregious 86.7% of 4th graders failed to achieve proficiency on the 2015 NYS English Language Arts (ELA) test. This is a tremendous problem because the education statistics, which we follow carefully, demonstrate that a lack of reading proficiency by the 4th grade bodes ill for a young person’s educational success in middle school and continuing through high school. We stress education throughout our programming. We also check report cards and refer youngsters who are falling behind to tutoring and homework help in the education department. Our 2015 Outcome Measurement Report found that our youngsters do consistently well in comparison to their district, school and grade-level peers on the NYS ELA and math standardized tests.

KIPS BAY BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB 1930 RANDALL AVE

Executive Director’s Message

The next century As Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club concludes its 100th anniversary, we celebrate a century of impacting children, changing lives and saving lives. Today we serve over 10,000 young people at nine Bronx locations and a rustic camp. The challenges faced by young people today may be a bit more complex than when we opened our door over 100 years ago in the Kips Bay section of Manhattan, but their basic needs remain the same: A safe place to go, a sense of self-worth and belonging, finding a passion and pursuing it. The genius of Boys & Girls Clubs begins each day when a youngster walks through our door and is greeted by the same staff member asking how they are feeling, if they have had anything to eat, and if they have any homework to do. These are simple questions and, over time, life-changing questions for a population where almost 60% come from single-parent homes, 50% won’t graduate high school, and too many will end up incarcerated, as unwed parents or on drugs. Our commitment in this next century is to stay on the cutting edge of technology while increasing educational and employment programs. Our guiding principle will remain preparing our children for the challenges of tomorrow. It’s encouraging to learn from our outcome surveys that we continue to graduate 90% of all seniors surveyed, and 60% of them end up going to college -- both figures well above the average of Bronx high schools. This is the real return on investment that will empower our children, fuel our economy and keep our neighborhoods and communities vibrant and productive in the next century. Over the last 19 years my goal has been to provide as many children as possible with the Kips Bay experience that shaped me as a child. It is you – our donor family, friends and voluntary leadership -- who will propel us to new heights. I thank you for providing me the privilege of leading this great organization into the next century
