Dear Friends:
Daniel Quintero Executive Director, Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club
Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club will be celebrating its 50th anniversary in the Bronx. It has been in existence since 1915 with a half century invested in Bronx neighborhoods. Upon its inception, Kips Bay met the pressing needs of youngsters in the Kips Bay section of Manhattan. Over time, those needs lessened, and other high-needs communities were identified, so Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club relocated to the Bronx. The Lucile Palmaro Clubhouse, our flagship site, opened in 1969. The Club provided children with opportunities to learn life skills like academics, the arts, athletics, socializing and becoming leaders in their community. We later added a swimming pool and two new classrooms. Over time, additions included an outdoor recreation area, an auditorium, and a sports complex including an ice rink, basketball court, baseball field and air-supported dome for indoor sports. We continued to expand our reach and strengthen our services, and we now operate nine sites in the Bronx and a rustic camp in Harriman, New York. We offer a full range of enrichment and recreational programming. And the expansion continues. We are in the midst of a project at the Lucile Palmaro Clubhouse to accommodate our ever-growing cadet population. We are also building a Learning Kitchen at the Frederic R. & Margaret Coudert Clubhouse. As important, is our critical partnership with Astor Mental Health Services to address the mental health issues that are affecting our youth today.
Our success is evidenced by the story of staff member Louise Hamilton, site supervisor at Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club H.E.L.P. Morris Unit (located in a homeless shelter). Louise has been nominated for the PASEsetters Award, which honors after-school educators who have made an indelible impact on youngsters. It is also evidenced by the 2018 Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club Youth of the Year representative, Jasmine M., from identifying and dealing with her mental health issues to acting on her passion for social justice and mental health awareness. As Kips Bay continues to stay present to the needs of the community, we continue to witness the positive results of our commitment to all who walk through Kips Bay doors. As I revisit the history of Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club and each milestone, I reminisce on the great and important work accomplished and what remains to be done. I am thankful for everyone who has partnered with us to grow this organization to what it is today. My sincere appreciation for all your support. It has allowed Kips Bay to provide essential programs and services to more than 10,000 youngsters, ages 6 to 18, throughout the Bronx. Kips Bay is truly “A Place to Become.” Sincerely,
Daniel Quintero Executive Director, Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club
Dear Friends:
James P. Druckman President and CEO, New York Design Center President, Board of Trustees Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club
A heartfelt thank-you to you, our generous donors. Your support allows Kips Bay to provide vital services to more than 10,000 youngsters throughout the Bronx. We sincerely appreciate all you do. Herein we illustrate the results of your investment. This year we feature individual stories of a member and a staff person who share how Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club became and remains the safe space that allowed them to confront and overcome their obstacles, and journey on the road to success. Staff member Louise Hamilton, site supervisor at Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club H.E.L.P. Morris Unit (located in a homeless shelter), is our PASEsetters nominee. Each year, PASE honors five outstanding after-school educators at the annual PASEsetters Awards Benefit. Award winners are individuals whose commitment, energy and creativity have had an indelible impact on the children and youth of New York City. As you read the summary of Ms. Hamilton’s accomplishments, it is clear Kips Bay staff and programs were life-changing. I am honored to stand shoulder to shoulder with Ms. Hamilton. She naturally promotes our mission because she has experienced the benefits of the Club firsthand and learned to thrive. We couldn’t ask for a better role model. The 2018 Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club Youth of the Year representative, Jasmine M., struggled as a young girl. She felt confused and misunderstood until her path led her to the Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club Frederic R. & Margaret Coudert Clubhouse in the West Bronx.
2
She is now a stellar young woman who represents the leadership qualities and commitment to civic engagement that Kips Bay instills in Club members. Her direct quote reflects the sense of nurturing provided at Kips Bay: “Being at Kips Bay was my safe haven.” We applaud her efforts and her wellearned distinction as our Youth of the Year representative. Day after day we strive to create an empowering atmosphere at our nine locations, where Club members are afforded “A Place to Become.” We uphold our mission: “To enrich and enhance the quality of life for young people by providing educational and developmental programs, with special emphasis on youngsters ages 6-18 who come from disadvantaged or disenfranchised circumstances.” We are truly grateful for your partnership. Sincerely,
James P. Druckman President and CEO, New York Design Center President, Board of Trustees Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club

Aspiring filmmakers and musicians are now able to hone their craft in the new Digital Arts Center at the Coudert Clubhouse. In addition to physical recreation and the arts, Club members can take advantage of academic assistance and education enrichment programs, held daily. H.E.L.P. USA’s site at H.E.L.P. Morris serves over 200 homeless families who are living in transitional housing while they search for a permanent place to call home. Each afternoon, Kips Bay welcomes children from these families with a snack, help with homework, and fun, interactive activities. These children face unique challenges and hardships. It’s difficult for them to think about their future with so much uncertainty in their daily lives. But these children have a remarkable friend on their side at H.E.L.P. Morris — Kips Bay’s Louise Hamilton. We are lucky to have Louise as our site supervisor, making Kips Bay at H.E.L.P. Morris a warm, welcoming, fun and supportive environment for children.
H.E.L.P. MORRIS SITE SUPERVISOR: LOUISE HAMILTON Louise’s mantra is, “Treat all we encounter with respect and a smile!” Louise makes sure that all staff at H.E.L.P. Morris are positive and respectful in their interactions with families. Her upbeat spirit brings sunshine to every room she enters. Louise has a special empathy for the young people she works with every day. When she was a kid, she and her family used to live at H.E.L.P. Morris as well. When Louise lived at the H.E.L.P. Morris shelter, she joined Kips Bay as a member. At one point, at a young age, she stopped going to school. Kips Bay staff struck a deal with her — she had to attend school in order to come to Kips Bay. Louise loved coming to Kips Bay, so the deal worked. As a teen, Louise began working for Kips Bay through the Summer Youth Employment Program and was hired as an education assistant in 2001. In her many years at the Kips Bay program at H.E.L.P. Morris, Louise has fed families, taught dance, run a girls program, taken children to the public library for a program called “Read to Me,” and led field trips. She makes sure that all holidays are celebrated with fanfare, and that families are able to feel at home with Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners. Her accomplishments at Kips Bay ultimately led to her being promoted to site supervisor.
Today, Louise uses her past experiences to connect with our youth. She gives children a sense of self-worth and instills in them that no matter what their circumstances are, they should never give up. She teaches them that everyone has low moments and challenges, but it’s how you overcome and push yourself forward that shows your strength. Louise helps our young people with their homework and encourages them to commit to their education. Today, Louise is earning her master’s degree, proving that determination and hard work can pay off. Above all, Louise ensures that her after-school program is a safe haven where kids can come to be free from worry, doubt, shame and despair — and just be a kid. Louise is an inspiration and friend to everyone she meets, and we are proud to claim her as both a staff member and as an accomplished Kips Bay alumna!
It’s about giving them the tools to succeed. Mr. Al returned to his home Club to work with young members to reinforce the importance of the life skills that can be learned through sports. Life is about performing as a good sportsman, both as an individual and as part of a team. As he mentors Club members, Al works alongside his childhood mentor from whom he learns on a daily basis. That’s high-five-worthy! Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club is a place to become.
TREAT ALL WE ENCOUNTER WITH RESPECT AND A SMILE! Louise Hamilton

Throughout his career, Phelps has been committed to helping promote the sport of swimming at all levels. Led by Kips Bay Aquatics Director Eddie Oyola, aquatics staff, utilizing the ‘IMPROGRAM’, taught members how to swim and techniques on water safety, including treading water and breathing techniques. The goal of this program is for participants to be comfortable in and around water, advance their swimming skills, and achieve good overall health.
CARLOS GOES ON NATIONAL TOUR Meet Carlos, affectionately known as CJ. At 3 years old, CJ would tell his mom he wanted to dance onstage. He began his journey to Broadway at age 6 when he joined the Kips Bay Performing Arts program. In his second year as a member, he auditioned for the Jr. K-Company and has flourished since. With the support of dedicated Club staff, CJ chased his Broadway dream and was invited to join the cast of the Broadway musical On Your Feet! The story of Emilio and Gloria Estefan, playing the role of young Emilio during the six-month national tour.

Several years ago, a struggling young girl from the West Bronx was looking for answers. She felt confused and misunderstood and had trouble remembering events from her childhood. But things were about to turn around for Jasmine, as her journey at Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club began.
2018 YOUTH OF THE YEAR:
JASMINE M.
Jasmine comes from a unique multicultural background. She has Pakistani and Dominican ancestry and two older half-siblings of Colombian descent. Growing up in an impoverished neighborhood, she was exposed to harsh realities and observed how violence, drugs and homelessness impacted her neighbors. Jasmine had suffered from mental health issues for most of her life. At the age of 14, she was diagnosed with major depression, generalized anxiety and depersonalization-derealization disorder. She took strong medication to treat these issues but still suffered from anxiety and found herself numb to happiness. In school, she was regularly bullied, which led her to feel like an outcast, overwhelmed and isolated. Her life felt empty, lonely and purposeless. But when she walked into Kips Bay’s Frederic R. and Margaret Coudert Clubhouse, Jasmine’s life began to change for the better. She started attending the Coudert Clubhouse in 2012. She was 10 years old and coping with many difficulties. As Jasmine recalls, “Being at Kips Bay was my safe haven.”
It’s about steps toward greatness. Ms. Breanna understands the power of the dance program at her home Club, and now returns during summer break to train and inspire young Club members through dance. She sees herself in dancers who are hungry and passionate about their art. She’s also experiencing the positive impact the discipline required for her dance training is having on her collegiate biology studies. Leaping from the stage to the lab. That’s how we do it!
At Kips Bay, she attended SMART Girls, a character and leadership-focused program that had a great impact on her life. As a SMART Girls member, Jasmine finally began to feel like she belonged. Having a group of friends and a platform
to speak her mind and express herself boosted Jasmine’s confidence and happiness. As Jasmine describes it, “The culture at Kips Bay is about empathy. Teaching people how to treat each other with kindness and how to interact with others helps so much.” Today, Jasmine is an ambitious and stellar young woman who represents the leadership qualities and commitment to civic engagement that Kips Bay instills in Club members. She is an honors student at Cathedral High School, a founding member of the STEM club, a lacrosse player, a member of the choir and a self-published author. Jasmine is especially passionate about social justice and mental health. As a minority female from an underprivileged neighborhood, she is driven to fight for equality and inclusion for all people. At Kips Bay, she participates in the community service-focused Keystone Club for teens. She is a dedicated advocate for equality for ethnic minorities, people with disabilities and the LGBTQ community. Jasmine is also committed to raising awareness about mental health, including the importance of staying away from illegal drugs.
Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club is a place to become.
MY LIFE WITHOUT KIPS BAY ... IT’S LIKE WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT YOUR BEST FRIEND, AND YOU DON’T KNOW WHERE YOUR LIFE WOULD HAVE GONE WITHOUT THEM BECAUSE YOU TWO ARE SO INTERTWINED. Jasmine M.

ANNUAL DAY FOR KIDS FESTIVAL AND STEVE BONANO MEMORIAL RUN Kips Bay’s Day for Kids is an annual community celebration and Kips Bay’s largest outreach event, reaching 7,000 community members a year. In partnership with the 43rd NYPD precinct, we closed Randall Avenue between White Plains Road and Pugsley Avenue, opened the Clubhouse to the community to welcome new members and lined the street with family-friendly recreational activities, a stage for speakers and performances, and booths for community merchants and corporate supporters. The day’s highlights included the annual Memorial Run in honor of NYPD Deputy Chief Steven Bonano, a 9/11 first responder and Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club alumnus and supporter who died of a 9/11-related cancer in 2015. Kids and adults alike participated in a walk/run through the neighborhood, raising money for Kips Bay. We featured performances from our talented K-Company dancers and our newly re-formed Drum Corps, the Kips Bay Knights. Next year’s Day for Kids, to be held in September, promises to be just as exciting as we celebrate 50 years of making a difference for local youth in the Bronx.

1969-2019 in the Bronx
KIPS BAY CELEBRATES 50 YEARS IN THE BRONX This year, Kips Bay celebrates its 50th anniversary in the Bronx. When we came to the Bronx in 1969, we were based out of one site. We were introduced to a new neighborhood and a new community of young people. Over the years, we have become a familiar and respected name in the Bronx, known for providing local youth with opportunities and helping them succeed. We are proud of our accomplishments in these last 50 years. Most of all, we are proud of having provided so many young people with a second home where they felt valued, accepted and prepared for the future. We look forward to many more years of new partnerships and new initiatives in the Bronx. To commemorate this milestone, we will hold two major events this year, our 50th Anniversary Gala and the 16th Annual Day for Kids Festival & Steven Bonano Memorial 5K Run. Kips Bay was founded in 1915 in the Kips Bay neighborhood in Manhattan. Local citizens were concerned about unsupervised children and teenagers roaming through the neighborhood. The Kips Bay Neighborhood Association began offering sports and other activities to keep the local youngsters busy and off the streets. By the 1960s, the Kips Bay neighborhood was no longer a high-needs area – other parts of the city needed the help much more. In 1969, the Club relocated to the Southeast Bronx to meet the borough’s need for services to young people. We opened the Lucile Palmaro Clubhouse, our flagship site, at 1930 Randall Avenue in the East Bronx. The Palmaro Clubhouse was built in the middle of the Castle Hill community, a high-crime, high-poverty neighborhood where many local youngsters were deprived of enrichment. Few programs existed to keep young residents safe, supervised and active during afterschool hours and summer.
The Club provided these children with a new opportunity to learn life skills like swimming; pursue their talents in the arts, athletics; and academics; make friends in a safe setting; and become young leaders in their community. Kips Bay attracted the community’s children and teenagers and continued to grow to accommodate new members and more program offerings. In 1988, our name was formally changed to the Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club to reflect that we were serving girls as well as boys.
In 1976, we added our swimming pool and two new classrooms, and in 1984 we added an outdoor recreation area and a 9,000-squarefoot auditorium that became the home of our performing arts program. In 2000, we opened the Coudert Sports Complex, which includes an ice rink, basketball court, baseball field and air dome for indoor soccer and games. Now, once again, we are on the cusp of another major expansion project so that more children can attend Kips Bay. Our work and our partnerships with elected officials, city agencies and generous supporters have helped us expand our reach and strengthen our programming. We now have nine sites in the Bronx and Camp Sebago, located in Harriman State Park. We serve over 10,000 young people each year. We now have two Clubhouses, with the Frederic R. and Margaret Coudert Clubhouse having opened in 2010 to serve a new geographic area in the West Bronx. We offer a full range of enrichment and recreational programming, four school-based programs, two community centers located in public housing, and two H.E.L.P. sites in transitional housing for homeless families.
Some of our unique contributions over the years include: • Becoming one of the largest service providers of the city’s Summer Youth Employment Program, which trains local teenagers for the world of work • The development of a robust and prestigious performing arts program that has yielded well-known alumni like Kerry Washington and Jennifer Lopez • Providing services to children from homeless families through our H.E.L.P. sites • Our close relationship with the New York Design Center and the interior design industry, producing the one-of-a-kind Kips Bay Decorator Show Houses in New York and Palm Beach, Florida • Our new partnership with Astor Services for Children and Families, which will make mental health services part of our programming available to Club members
