50TH ANNIVERSARY IN BRONX CELEBRATION The Kips Bay community came together on November 15, 2019 to celebrate its 50th anniversary in the Bronx, with more than 300 members, alumni, current and former staff and board in attendance at Yankee Stadium. A highlight of the evening—a special salute to Daniel Quintero and James Schwab, two executive directors to have led the Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club in the Bronx the past 50 years.

BRENT ’S CLUB KIDS STAY D RUG F R EE This year alone, more than 600 Club members learned about the danger of drug and alcohol abuse in Brent’s Club, a program created by Robert and Linell Shapiro that educates and empowers young people not to succumb to peer pressure as it relates to alcohol and drug abuse. As part of the program, 10% of the members 10-18 are randomly tested and all tested negative.

COLLEGE HERE WE COME

NEVER TOO MANY COOKS IN THIS KITCHEN

The Kips Bay College Signing Day in May becomes increasingly popular each year as Kips Bay honors and celebrates members who graduate high school and commit to attend a two to four year college or university, vocational school, or who will join the military. A visit to the College Day signing ceremony this year by actor Malik Yoba made the event extra special. Yoba inspired the students, sharing his own life story and the importance of goal setting. 72 students were honored in 2019.

A state-of-the-art teaching kitchen in the Frederic R. & Margaret Coudert Clubhouse will open in October 2020. Designed to educate young people and their families about healthy eating, including how to shop for and cook healthy food, the budding culinary arts program will also provide valuable career-readiness services for teens interested in becoming chefs or caterers. More than $1million was raised to build the kitchen and establish this very important program.

Dear Friends of Kips Bay, Fifty years. We’ve called the Bronx our home for half a century. And that is less than half of our 104-year history in New York City, providing Club members a safe, secure home away from home.

At Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club, our members discover that no matter their circumstances, they can achieve a life filled with opportunity and success. All for $10 a year.

No small feat.

That’s where you come in. With your help, Kips Bay will be able to continue to empower young people in the Bronx for decades to come. We depend on your support to provide our Club members with the kinds of programs they need to supplement their school work and prepare for the future. Working together, our members will continue to grow in ways they never thought possible.

What started in 1969 as an outpost in a vacant lot in the Southeast Bronx, surrounded by a lot of nothing, has become a thriving Boys & Girls Club in nine locations where tens of thousands of kids have attended over the years to do their homework, play sports, dance, make friends, learn respect, receive a helping hand and always a kind word.

THE ONE CONSTANT AT KIPS BAY FROM ITS EARLIEST DAYS TO NOW IS THAT ONCE YOU WALK THROUGH THE DOORS, YOUR WORLD IS SAFE. --CHARLES IGLESIAS, FOUNDING MEMBER

Charles Iglesias, a former member from one of the four founding families, says “The one constant at Kips Bay from its earliest days to now is that once you walk through the doors, your world is safe. You are welcomed, encouraged to be your best self and given every opportunity to explore your interests and broaden your mind.” A lot has changed over the years, but our mission and core values have remained the same.

Here’s to our first 50 years in the Bronx and to our partnerships with our Kips Bay donor family. With your continued generosity, we look forward to many more years of success. Sincerely, Daniel Quintero Executive Director
