WE LEVEL THE PLA

2016 ANNUAL REPORT

10,000 youth a year turning dreams into reality

At Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club, young people ages 6 to 18 discover that no matter their circumstances, they can achieve a life filled with opportunity and success.

Dear Friends of Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club, Every day, for thousands of young people, we level the playing field. What you hold in your hands is the story of change. It is a look at the remarkable strength and spirit of children and teens, how eagerly they embrace life and learning when given the chance, and how caring, talented professionals help make it all happen. Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club, a nurturing, safe environment with an extraordinary array of exciting programs and services, gives youngsters guidance and tools for a life they would otherwise not have. As a Kips Bay kid from early childhood through adolescence, I know how transformative the organization is. Kips Bay opened up the world for me, and after 20 years as executive director, I am still excited and gratified every day to pay it forward for Bronx youngsters. Our Club members come from diverse socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds, but here, everyone is equal. Kips Bay staff demonstrate great respect to all members, who appreciate it and pass it on to each other. It is amazing how much kids learn and accomplish when they feel safe and special, and when observing good role models.

At our 10 locations, Kips Bay’s time-tested mission and core values remain in place while we continuously explore new initiatives. We recently trained and employed over 1,400 Club members in summer jobs, successfully lobbied the Bronx City Council to change our street name to Kips Bay Boulevard, and reached the $10,000,000 goal of our Great Futures: The Next 100 Years campaign. The funds will help Kips Bay expand programs, improve and upgrade infrastructure, and build our endowment. We extend heartfelt thanks to all the contributors who helped us reach our goal. Kips Bay Club members pay only one dollar a year to enjoy everything we provide. With your help, Bronx youth will continue to flourish in ways they never imagined. Sincerely,

Daniel Quintero Executive Director

Dear Friends, It is a great pleasure to greet you as president of the board of Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club, an iconic institution that has been enriching young lives in New York City for over 100 years. I came to know Kips Bay in my career associated with the design industry, and my affiliation with the organization has become as much personal as it has professional. For nearly 20 years, I have watched as Kips Bay staff challenge members to be their best selves and become educated young adults with real futures. My involvement with Kips Bay is calculated to ensure that our resources meet the growing need for support for Bronx youth. Working in partnership with Executive Director Dan Quintero and other members of the Board and executive staff, we continually seek new revenue streams and grow existing ones to provide Club members with modern facilities and exemplary programming. While my family and I attend most Kips Bay fundraising events, two special events receive my full participation every year. The annual Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club Decorator Show House and Kips Bay President’s Dinner galvanize the interior design industry and our donor community in support of Kips Bay. This year, for the first time in the 45-year history of the Show House, a second one will debut in Palm Beach, Florida.

Proceeds from the November event will benefit both Palm Beach and Kips Bay members. Thanks to Kips Bay staff and select volunteer designers, the Show Houses are always a great success. Because they provide just part of the funding required to maintain Kips Bay programs and develop new ones, we rely on many income sources, including you. Your support enables Kips Bay to fulfill its mission of empowering the lives of young people in New York City. Nothing is more gratifying to me than visiting the Clubhouses and seeing Kips Bay children and teens engaged in so many wonderful activities. In these pages, you, too, can see the smiling faces of our kids in action. Sincerely,

James P. Druckman President and CEO New York Design Center President Board of Trustees, Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club

Can You Take Goldfish Snacks into Space?

I learned how to create real b at the Digital Arts Center and

beats d I come

Elias has a bit of a problem: he enjoys doing a whole bunch of things. Should he become an astronaut, filmmaker, actor, singer, journalist, or artist? Or, some combination of these careers? And since his favorite snack is Goldfish Extra Cheddar, will Elias be allowed to take it into space?

66% of Club alumni became seriously committed to their education because of their Club membership

SO MANY OPTIONS, PLENTY OF TIME Ten years old and a Kips Bay member at the Coudert Clubhouse since he was 6, Elias has been engaging in so many wonderful programs and projects that it’s almost like experiencing the G-force of space travel. At Kips Bay summer camp, members participate in many activities every day. DIGITAL ARTS, OLD MUSIC, AND BRINGING BACK OP ART Right now, Elias is in the Club’s cutting-edge Digital Arts Center, where he learns composing, producing, and editing with Digital Arts Director Eddie Marrero. “My favorite instrument is the piano,” says Elias, “and I like to make beats with it.” For those of us who aren’t currently composing hip hop, Elias explains that beats are layers of instruments on an audio track, over which you can play other music. He demonstrates his art by deftly playing the digital piano over a prerecorded percussion mix. When Eddie asks his young protégé to demonstrate video editing, Elias pulls up a video and, like a seasoned pro, begins to adjust the sounds and images. Elias also likes to sing with the Kips Bay Chorus. A recent concert featured “old music”—Stevie Wonder and Michael Jackson. “I also like to draw,” says Elias. “I draw lines and then make drawings out of them.” Elias, too young to have heard of Op Art, nonetheless creates a design that would fit right in with an exhibition of the style.

GETTING A JUMP ON THE FOURTH ESTATE

Elias also enjoys being a reporter and has practiced his skills at the glamorous Kips Ba President’s Dinner. Dressed smartly, Elias a Martha Stewart and other guests why they support Kips Bay Boys & Girls Clubs. Listeni carefully, he follows up on all responses. INTO THE GALAXY

Space Camp is another fun activity for Elias The program, developed by Educational Dire Jacqueline Bourdett, includes a daily Q&A a space. Academics are combined with the ar as Elias and other Club members collaborat on a show about space, including props. The paper mache helmet Elias is making is sleek and colorful. GIVING BACK ASAP

Elias is already planning to volunteer at Kips when he’s 12, in addition to continuing as a member. His altruism owes to his love for th place. “I feel safe here,” Elias says, “and I h made at least 10 friends, and I get to do a l things. Even if I lose at bumper pool, it’s OK.

Elias has only one complaint: lunch. He doe usually like the main choice, but “it’s OK, be cause there’s always another choice. And I a like tangerines.”

Elias shares some of Kips Bay’s many stren safety, choices, friendship. The tangerines m life at the Club even sweeter.

I love Ms. Lesean because she is very kind, and she loves kids, and she teaches us about respect. And, oh! She boug me a big art set for Christmas! I use it all the time. ::Nayliah, 10 years old

At the tender age of 3, Nayliah fell in love with art and hasn’t stopped drawing since. Now 10 and a Kips Bay member for two-and-a-half years, Nayliah also love read and plans to go to art college and become a comic book illustrator and wri Program Leader Lesean Brown is amazed by Nayliah’s creativity. “I give Nayliah feedback on her work,” says Lesean, “and she really listens and gets better and better!” A SAFE PLACE TO BECOME A RENAISSANCE WOMAN Nayliah is comfortable being her creative self at Kips Bay. “I love it because it is safe and I have a lot of friends,” she says of the Club. Not one to limit herself, Nayliah also loves to dance and is quick to demonstrate her fabulous “Running Man.” She also loves to act and, just like Lesean, loves animals and swimming. Lesean taught Nayliah to swim. “I love it when she dunks me,” Nayliah says, adding, “and we both have pets. I have a cat and two turtles.” Lesean shares that she has several dogs. On the subject of animals, Nayliah pauses for a moment and then declares, “I might become a veterinarian, too, and draw and write on the side.” She’ll be busy! A SPIRITED ATTITUDE, WITH HELP FROM A FRIEND

90%

of alumni said the Club was one of the best things available in their community

From Nayliah’s relaxed and positive attitude, you would think she is a burden-free child living in charmed circumstances. Actually, she lives in a HELP USA homeless shelter with her mom and step-mom. Her bright outlook owes much to Lesean, whom Nayliah sees every day after school and during summer camp. Warm, friendly, and passionate about kids, Lesean is followed by a gaggle of members everywhere she goes. Her close, nurturing relationship with Nayliah is very special. With her pal just inches away, Nayliah says, “I love Ms. Lesean, because she is very

kind, and she loves kids, and she teaches u about respect. And, oh! She bought me a big set for Christmas! I use it all the time.” EXPERIENCING A WORLD OF ENRICHMENT

When Nayliah is not getting homework help, playing or putting on a show—she often crea a bus out of chairs and takes kids to South Carolina, while serving tea—she is participat in exposure activities organized by Kips Bay. loved seeing Wicked on Broadway and enjoy museum trips. She particularly liked Thurma Scott’s The Actors Theater Workshop, where was among a group of Kips Bay kids who cre an art project and presented it on stage to a large audience. “It was a great experience,” explains Lesean, “because Mr. Scott made t kids feel important.
