Chair's Message

WELCOME TO THE 2018 KIPS BAY SHOW HOUSE

PHOTO: TRIA GIOVAN

Dear Friends, For over 46 years the Kips Bay Decorator Show House has been dedicated to celebrating the most established voices in design alongside new talent on the rise, and this year is no exception. I’ve had the distinct pleasure of serving as the Chair of the Show House for several years and have loved watching designers stretch their creativity, collaborate with workrooms, artisans, and design resources to turn out stunning rooms where talent shines brightly. At the center of it all is not the recognition – which is so greatly deserved – but the reward of knowing that we as a group are raising essential funds for the Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club and the enrichment programs offered to more than 10,000 talented young people throughout the Bronx. Every year our community seems to pull off the impossible. What feels insurmountable on day one becomes completely serendipitous on opening night. Join me in celebrating our contribution and the children we so beautifully serve.

Sincerely,

Bunny Williams Chair, Show House Committee

President’s Message

SUPPORTING OUR YOUTH Dear Show House Patrons, Friends and Participants: As always, I am honored and delighted to greet you as President of the Board of this iconic institution. Welcome to the 46th edition of the Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club Decorator Show House; the epitome of inspirational interior design. Each year, Kips Bay staff, select designers and generous volunteers come together to create a Show House which is unveiled during the Opening Night Cocktail Reception and open throughout the month for the public to enjoy. Instrumental to that creative team is Bunny Williams, the Show House Committee Chair. Bunny has led the committee since 2012 and has long been on the forefront of the design industry. Our relationship with Bunny began in 1998 when she first participated as a designer in the Show House. Since then, Bunny has been an avid supporter of Kips Bay and integral to the success of the Show House. We take this opportunity to thank Bunny for all she has done throughout these years. Her contributions to the Show House and to the Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club mission are invaluable. Kips Bay’s mission to “enrich and enhance the quality of life for all young people by providing educational and developmental programs, with special emphasis on youngsters between ages 6 to 18 who come from disadvantaged or disenfranchised circumstances” is carried out at nine locations throughout The Bronx, serving over 10,000 members annually. Our success as an organization is directly related to the generosity of supporters like you and the ever essential proceeds of this signature event. Many thanks from our board, staff and the over 10,000 children we serve. Enjoy the Show House! Sincerely,

James P. Druckman President P.S. Want to become more involved with Kips Bay? Contact me at 212-679-9500 x15 or jdruckman@nydc.com.

The Source for Wonderful Finds Thank you to all of the design firms, retailers and individuals who have donated beautiful pieces to our shop and helped us raise critical funds for the Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club.

VISIT OUR SHOW HOUSE SHOP 118 East 76th Street (Between Park & Lexington Avenues) Each year our Show House visitors look forward to the great finds in our Shop. The funds we raise directly support the award winning afterschool and enrichment programs that Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club offers to 10,000 children throughout the Bronx. For example, your in-kind donation of a table that sells for $500 provides one computer for our computer lab. A sofa that raises $700 sponsors a child at Kips Bay for an entire year. All donations are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.

If you have any treasures you would like to contribute, please contact Christina Bello at (718) 893-8600 x11236 or Christina.Bello@kipsbay.org 58

Highlights Brent’s Club

We launched Brent’s Club in partnership with the Robert Shapiro Foundation and the New York City Giants. 69 members engaged in weekly workshops that focused on drug and alcohol prevention. Club members learned the importance of setting goals for themselves and using critical thinking skills to avoid situations that put their lives and futures in jeopardy. The summer culminated with a trip to Buffalo Wild Wings and a New York Giants game. Kips Bay partnered with Astor Children’s Services to secure a licensed clinician as a facilitator.

Digital Arts Studio

Major League Baseball (MLB) and the Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA) gifted Kips Bay with a brand new Digital Arts Center. There is now a Digital Arts Program which conducted an orientation with actor Malik Yoba. Yoba had the guidance of staffmembers Max, Eddie, and Julio. They are teaching Kips Bay Kids the skills of video, songwriting, and all aspects of a digital arts activities. Over 40 members ages 6 to 18 take part in the 6-week course at the Coudert Clubhouse.

House History

110 East 76th Street 83

110 East 76th Street

T

he Upper East Side is known for its grandiose townhomes and stately buildings. Lenox Hill, the neighborhood that stretches from East 60th Street to 77th Street, is no exception to this rule and serves as a true testament to the stunning architecture of New York’s Upper East Side. Given the current scenery of the Upper East Side, however, one may find it difficult to believe that the neighborhood was not always home to the exquisite buildings that exist today. Until the second half of the 19th century, the Upper East Side was owned by the City of New York and was entirely forest or farmland, essentially untouched due to the lack of streets above what is now midtown. Due to the expansion of streetcars and carriages, uptown became far more accessible and alluring. This combined with a real estate bubble that had land prices increasing as much as 200% allowed for a construction boom in the Upper East Side, with investors commissioning rows of townhouses to be occupied by businessmen and merchants. It was at this time that the stately mansions and brownstones that we associate the neighborhood with today took their place at the forefront of Upper East Side architecture. The site of this year’s Kips Bay Decorator Show House at 110 East 76th Street pays homage to this tradition, with the new construction following the vision of the esteemed architect and New York legend Robert Couturier’s designs. The site of this year’s Kips Bay Decorator Show House, which began renovations in 2010, was heavily influenced by Robert Couterier in its architectural style. After studying at Ecole Camondo in his native Paris. Couturier made design history in 1987 when the billionaire financier Sir James Goldsmith followed his instinct to hire the then 32-year-old to handle the re-conception, execution, and continuous embellishment,

84

down to each gilded detail, of Goldsmith’s 20,000-acre kingdom on the Pacific Coast of Mexico. Couturier would later be hired to decorate Goldsmith’s Boeing 757, his double-width Manhattan townhouse, and his historic French chateau. Couturier emphasizes that interiors are not stage sets, but instead ‘spaces for living people to move through and function in.’ This mindset is exhibited in the recent renovation of this year’s Kips Bay Decorator Show House, which took much influence from the style and past works of the world-famous and critically-acclaimed architect. The row of six traditional, neo-Grec style rowhouses, originally designed by Augustus Hatfield in the late 19th century and built in 1883-85, that stretch from 110-120 East 76th Street are truly without compare. There are many remarkable features of the mansion at 110 East 76th Street, perhaps the most extraordinary being its 36-foot width, making it about 10 to 15 feet wider than the majority of townhouses in Manhattan. As a result of the recent renovations, a mix of modern convenience and luxury accompanies artistry and quality of craftsmanship rarely seen today. Just past the formal marble entry foyer is the grand central staircase - a work of art on its own - which allows natural light to flow throughout the home. Located on the ground floor with a wall of glass overlooking the limestone-clad and landscaped back courtyard, are the kitchen and family room - possibly the largest on the market today. Eight bedrooms, 10 baths and four half-baths provide the luxury of space. The master suite alone is over 1,500 square feet with a separate sitting room, fireplace and double baths. Spanning 15,000 square feet over seven levels- all accessible by elevator- the home manages to be both impressive in its formality and relaxed in its comfort, securing its place as a one-of-a-kind home in New York’s iconic Upper East Side neighborhood.
