Chair's Message

WELCOME TO THE 2017 KIPS BAY SHOW HOUSE

Dear Friends,

Welcome to the 45th Annual Kips Bay Decorator Show House. We are thrilled to host the show house this year in the former China Institute, a townhouse designed by Charles A. Platt. Some of America's finest designers and architects have created magic that will inspire and enthrall each visitor. With their efforts and your support, the show house raises essential funds that enable the Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club to provide vital after school programs to more than 10,000 talented young people throughout the Bronx.

So, as you wander through this year’s show house, taking photographs on your phone, gathering fresh ideas and many new sources, please know how grateful all of us at Kips Bay are for your support, especially the many children that benefit from the programs. It is because of friends like you that Kips Bay can build futures for the children we serve.

Sincerely,

At the Center of Design

THE NEXT 100 YEARS

Dear Show House Patrons, Friends and Participants:

I am honored and delighted to again greet you as President of the Board of this iconic institution celebrating its 102nd year in 2017. Welcome to the 45th edition of the Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club Decorator Show House, the foremost manifestation of interior design in the United States.

Kips Bay’s mission, to “enrich and enhance the quality of life for all young people by providing educational and developmental programs, with special emphasis on youngsters between ages 6 to 18 who come from disadvantaged or disenfranchise circumstances” is supported by funds raised through the Show House.

Kips Bay performs its mission for more than 10,000 youngsters annually at 2 clubhouses, 2 housing projects, 3 public schools, a rustic camp, 2 homeless shelters, and a senior citizen center. We are grateful to all of our supporters, but especially those related to the Interior Design industry whose tireless efforts make the Show House and its over $1,000,000 of proceeds a reality. Kips Bay is very focused on Outcome Measurement. In 2016, 92% of Kips Bay members, who were high school seniors, graduated on time versus 49% of their peers in the same school district.

By participating in the Show House, you help Kips Bay fulfill its mission and achieve its goals. Thank you from our board, our staff, and above all, our 10,000 children.

Enjoy the Show House and think of the children!

The Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club is pleased to announce that portfolio submissions for the inaugural Kips Bay Palm Beach Show House are now open to all designers wishing to submit.

Palm Beach Committee

The inaugural show house is a classic 1920s Mediterranean revival villa in the wonderful El Cid historic district of West Palm Beach. It has over 6000 sq. ft of designable space, and it is hoped to be able to showcase the work of approximately 20 designers. Uniquely, Kips Bay will have possession of the house for an extended period of time, allowing for work to be done throughout the summer and early fall, a rarity in the show house world. Designers will be responsible for all work done in their designated spaces and, if requested, the neutralization of that space following the run-of-show. Kips Bay will work diligently with designers to assist in their efforts, however all expenses are the responsibility of each designer. Rooms must be completed NO LATER THAN NOVEMBER 15th for an anticipated opening Gala Preview on Friday evening, November 24th. The run-of-show will be for approximately 3 weeks.

In keeping with the longstanding traditions of the Kips Bay Decorator Show House, designers will be selected by a jury made up of design professionals and members of the Kips Bay Board of Trustees. Too modernize this process, designers are being asked to submit in digital form with 2 simple documents.

TO APPLY, DESIGNERS ARE REQUESTED TO PROVIDE:

1. A single PDF of 6-12 images representative of their work. 2. A single page bio with complete contact inforomation. Please include any and all previous show house participations.

KINDLY EMAIL THESE 2 REQUESTED DOCUMENTS TO: Nazira.handal@kipsbay.org

Kips Bay requests that all documentation be received for review no later than May 15, 2017. Invited designers will then be notified ASAP and will then be informed of the room lottery process and other relevant details for their consideration.

FOR FURTHER INFORMATION, PLEASE CONTACT: Nazira Handal, Director of Special Events & Corporate Partnerships Nazira.handal@kipsbay.org 212.755.5733

THE COMPOSED FAUCET COLLECTION. EMBRACE THE IRRESISTIBLE BEAUTY OF MODERN, MINIMAL DESIGN.

OVER 100 YEARS OF SERVICE TO CHILDREN

Dear Show House Patrons, Friends, and Participants:

It gives me tremendous pleasure to acknowledge Daniel Quintero’s 20th anniversary serving as the Executive Director ofKips Bay Boys & Girls Club. Dan is an active visionary who implements strategic development throughout Kips Bay. We are excited to celebrate another year of Dan’s utmost devotionto this cherished organization.Hisdedication and loyalty have undeniably been the foundation for Kips Bay’s growth as he is the keystone to its success.

A fewof Dan’s accomplishments include:

• Establishing programs at two homeless facilities.

• Building the Bronx’ only ice rink and an air-supported sports dome.

• Opening an on-site dental clinic to serveclub members and the community.

• Establishing programs atCastle Hill and Throggs Neck Community Centers.

• Opening the Frederic R. & Margaret Coudert Clubhouse in the West Bronx, bringing the first, and only, Boys & GirlsClub to the West Bronx neighborhood. This multimillion dollar, 28,000 square foot facility now serves 1,500 youngsters, annually.

• Implementinginterfaith events that includeguests from the nearby Islamic Leadership School and Masjid Al-Iman Mosque, the Solomon Schechter School in Manhattan, and the Museum of Jewish Heritage.

• Launching a centennial campaign entitled “Great Futures: The Next 100 Years”, with a successful fundraising goal of $7,500,000.

• Doubling the annualenrollment at Kips Bay since 1996 when Dan became Executive Director.

He is also a caring husband to his wife Maribel and a loving father to their three children, Danielle, Francesca and Evan. Their support inspires him in making Kips Bay a positive place for all children. I speak, not only for myself, but all who are a part of the Kips Bay family when I say, we are truly thankful for the remarkable service Daniel Quintero has provided and the commitment he has demonstrated throughout his 20years leading this great organization.

Dan has been instrumental in developing Kips Bay into a Flagship Club for the Boys & Girls Club of America. As Jim Clark, President and CEO of BGCA, noted in his congratulatory letter to Dan, “Our Movement is fortunate to have been impacted by Daniel Quintero and today’s youth will benefit from all the support he has provided.”

Thank you,Dan. We wish you many more years of making great futures possible for the youth we serve!

Sincerely,

Thank you for visiting the 45th Annual Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club Decorator Show House.

Each year, I am inspired by the thousands of youngsters who walk through the doors at our 10 locations. These children are inquisitive, passionate, and energetic young people seeking to take advantage of the guidance our highly trained staff provides. Our members come from diverse socioeconomic, racial, and educational backgrounds.

We are committed to exploring new initiatives and program offerings while continuing to preserve the core values and mission-oriented approach that we have maintained since 1915. Over the past year, we’ve had many successes. Kips Bay trained and employed over 1,300 club teen members last summer and another 150 in the fall and winter. We successfully lobbied City Council to change the street name where our Flagship Club is located to “Kips Bay Boulevard.” We were awarded over $2.8 million in capital funds to expand services to our 6 to 12 year-old population, and to build a state of the art learning kitchen to introduce nutrition and culinary arts to our club members. Our aquatics program has produced one Junior Olympian and 12 Silver Champions. Most importantly, we continue to provide a safe, nurturing and empowering place where youngsters are given the necessary support to achieve their goals as they develop into adulthood.

In the midst of volatile times that continue to shape the nonprofit sector, there is an unprecedented demand from savvy donors to make intelligent giving decisions. The Upper East Side is known for its grandiose townhomes and stately buildings. Lenox Hill, the neighborhood that stretches from East 60th Street to 77th Street, is no exception to this rule and serves as a true testament to the stunning architecture of New York’s Upper East Side. Given the current scenery of the Upper East Side, however, one may find it difficult to believe that the neighborhood was not always home to the exquisite buildings that exist today.

Until the second half of the 19th century, the Upper East Side was owned by the City of New York and was entirely forest or farmland, essentially untouched due to the lack of streets above what is now midtown. Due to the expansion of streetcars and carriages, uptown became far more accessible and alluring. This combined with a real estate bubble that had land prices increasing as much as 200% allowed for a construction boom in the Upper East Side, with investors commissioning rows of townhouses to be occupied by businessmen and merchants.

The popular style at the time was the brownstone, featuring three to four stories with a raised parlor and a tall front stoop, which still line the streets of the Upper East Side today.

During this period of growth in the latter half of the 19th century and stretching into the early 20th century, architect Charles A. Platt’s firm emerged at the forefront of the American architecture scene. His Georgian style mansions and country houses are widely regarded as the finest American examples of their genre. To this day, historians and architects alike consider Platt’s work to be some of the most influential of 20th century design. Prior to entering into the architecture sphere, Platt was a successful landscape designer. Using this experience, Platt heavily emphasized the amalgamation of interior and exterior spaces, which is highly evident in his projects. He is most recognized for designing the Freer Gallery in Washington, D.C., Maxwell Court in Rockville, Connecticut, the Park Avenue Armory in New York, and Villa Turicum in Lake Forest, Illinois. Throughout his career, Platt remained a fixture in popular design magazines, which often highlighted his unique aesthetic and keen ability to bring nature into urban settings.

Between 1930 – 1935, East 65th Street underwent complete redevelopment to become largely what it looks like today. In 1905, Platt was commissioned to build 125 East 65th Street,

which, flash-forward over 110 years, would become the site of the 2017 Kips Bay Decorator Show House. Interestingly, the townhouse has housed only two occupants since it was built over 100 years ago.

The neo-Georgian townhouse was originally built for the American physiologist, Frederic S. Lee (1859-1939), who fulfilled his research career at Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surgeons. It is most notably recognized, however, for being the headquarters of the China Institute, which moved into the space on December 1, 1944 as a result of magazine magnate Henry R. Luce’s substantial contribution. Henry R. Luce generously gifted “China House” in memory of his father, who had been a missionary and educator in China until his death in 1941. George Nelson, editor of Architectural Forum magazine, was charged with designing the floor plan, implementing a 424-square-foot art gallery in the ground-floor front room.

The China Institute remained headquartered at 125 East 65th Street until 2015, when it relocated. Up until 1966, the house hosted Chinese art exhibitions for special occasions. In 1966, the ‘China House Gallery,’ which would be renamed the ‘China Institute Gallery’ in 1994, came to exist due to a grant from investment banker and Chinese art collector, Myron S. Falk Jr., who acted as the first chairman of The China Institute. He, along with co-chairs Mrs. Edwin F. Stanton and Mrs. Edward M. Pfluenger, made the exhibitions a permanent feature, beginning with ‘Selections of Chinese Art: From Private Collections in the Metropolitan Area,’ which opened on November 15, 1966. It is they who made China House what it would come to be known as up until The China Institute’s relocation almost two years ago.

There are many remarkable features of the townhouse, perhaps that most extraordinary being its 35-foot width, making it 10 to 15 feet wider than the majority of townhouses. The ceilings are also exceptionally high, reaching 12 feet in the living room. These elements, combined with the double-width staircase, make the space truly unique and grandeur. The house still holds onto some of its past as ‘China House,’ with the outdoor courtyard still intact. 125 East 65th Street’s rich history truly shines and will give residents a chance to live in one of New York’s most prestigious neighborhoods in a home built by one of America’s most notable architects.
