Chair's Message
WELCOME TO THE 2019 KIPS BAY SHOW HOUSE Dear Friends, Welcome to the 47th Annual Kips Bay Decorator Show House. As this year’s co-chairs, we are thrilled to be ushering in another year of beautiful designs, created by an incredible roster of talents, all in support of a organization that has become very dear to our New Yorker’s hearts: The Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club. Between us, our two firms have participated in the Show House more than a dozen times; literally, spanning the millennia. The Show House has played an important role in our careers when we have participated. It has strengthened the bonds of our professional community, as we have worked side by side as colleagues to attain the goal of completing the house on time. However, it has also provided inspiration for us in years when we have only been visitors. It is a veritable melting pot of ideas, vision and execution, done at perilous pace, for the joy of design. Most importantly, we love the Kips Bay Show House for its support of the real kids who depend upon it, and on you, to sustain their community. The Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club has been enriching the lives of more than 10,000 kids in several locations in the Bronx, and through programs diverse in nature, for the past 103 years. Kips Bay is a destination for them, in which to find support, educational and artistic instruction, life skills, friendship, and a safe haven, — after school and in the summertime, alike. With such offerings, both mundane and profound, Kips Bay is helping young New Yorkers make the transition to becoming the kind of adult citizens of the world who know care and grace. It is our privilege to be working in whatever small way we can to further the goals of such an accomplished and worthy organization. We thank you for joining us in our support of the Show House and we look forward to hearing what you think of this year’s offering of design feats. Sincerely,
Jamie Drake Co-Chair, Show House Committee
Alexa Hampton Co-Chair, Show House Committee

President’s Message
TRADITION OF EXCELLENCE Dear Show House Patrons, Friends and Participants: As always, I am honored and delighted to greet you as President of the Board of this iconic institution. Welcome to the 47th edition of the Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club Decorator Show House; the epitome of inspirational interior design. Each year, Kips Bay staff, and generous volunteers come together with interior designers whose work and commitment to Kips Bay and the Industry warrant their inclusion in the most prestigious exhibition of interior design offerings in the US. In a miraculously short time, these honored designers create a Show House open throughout the month of May for the press, the public and interior design professionals to enjoy. Instrumental to the success of that creative team of designers are Alexa Hampton and Jamie Drake, themselves extraordinary decorators who have succeeded Bunny Williams as Show House Committee Chairs. Bunny continues to partner with us as Chair of the President’s Dinner Committee also giving advice and encouragement to the Show House Chairs and, of course, as a lifelong friend and supporter of Kips Bay. We have every confidence that the new team will continue the tradition of excellence established 47 years ago. Kips Bay’s mission to “enrich and enhance the quality of life for all young people by providing educational and developmental programs, with special emphasis on youngsters between ages 6 to 18 who come from disadvantaged or disenfranchised circumstances” is carried out at nine locations throughout The Bronx, serving over 10,000 members annually. Our success as an organization is directly related to the generosity of supporters like you and the everessential proceeds of this signature event. Many thanks from our board, staff and the over 10,000 children we serve. Enjoy the Show House! Sincerely,
James P. Druckman President P.S. Want to become more involved with Kips Bay? Contact me at 212-679-9500 x15 or jdruckman@nydc.com.

Thank you to all of the design firms, retailers and individuals who have donated beautiful pieces to our shop and helped us raise critical funds for the Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club.
VISIT OUR SHOW HOUSE SHOP
36-38 East 74th Street (Between Park &Madison Avenues)
Each year our Show House visitors look forward to the great finds in our Shop. The funds we raise directly support the award winning afterschool and enrichment programs that Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club offers to 10,000 children throughout the Bronx. For example, your in-kind donation of a table that sells for $500 provides one computer for our computer lab. A sofa that raises $700 sponsors a child at Kips Bay for an entire year. All donations are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law. If you have any treasures you would like to contribute, please contact Christina Bello at Christina.Bello@kipsbay.org

Kips Bay’s 50th Anniversary Celebration This year, Kips Bay celebrates its 50th anniversary in the Bronx. Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club was originally founded in 1915 in the Kips Bay neighborhood in Manhattan. Upon coming to the Bronx in 1969, the Club was based out of one site in a new neighborhood with a new community of young people. Over the years, Kips Bay has become a familiar and respected name in the Bronx, known for providing local youth with vital programs and services that help them succeed. We are proud of our accomplishments during these last fifty years. Most of all, we are proud of creating a second home for so many young people where they have felt valued, accepted, and encouraged as they prepare for the future. We look forward to carrying on the Kips Bay mission through many more years of new partnerships and new initiatives in the Bronx. Celebrate with us!

IDENTIFYING CHALLENGES AND PROVIDING SOLUTIONS Dear Show House Friends, Thank you for visiting the 47th Annual Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club Decorator Show House. As we embark on this year’s Kips Bay Decorator Show House, I can‘t imagine what our organization would look like if not for the support of the Show House, the thousands of guests that attend each year, and the amazing designers and design industry individuals that have paved the way for tens of thousands of youngsters to take advantage of our varied and diversified programs. The Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club is a safe place with caring and talented professionals that provide stability, guidance and tools to empower our members for a life they would otherwise never experience. The Show House has become the major event that enables the Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club to achieve its mission. As a Kips Bay kid from early childhood through my college years, I experienced firsthand how transformative the organization could be. Kips Bay opened up the world for me, and now, 22 plus years as Executive Director, I am still excited and gratified to provide Bronx youngsters with the same opportunities afforded to me at Kips Bay. Our Club members come from diverse socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds, however, everyone is treated equally. Kips Bay staff show great respect to all members, who appreciate it and, in turn, demonstrate respect for one another. It is amazing how much kids learn and accomplish when they feel safe and special, and when observing good role models. Kips Bay’s time-tested mission and core values remain in place at our 10 locations (9 in the Bronx and a camp in Harriman, New York). Our services still include programs that address education, empowerment, physical education and recreation, but as important, are the more recent programs that meet the needs of young people where they are. As a result, we have secured a collaboration with Astor Mental Health Services to address some of the more sensitive and difficult challenges our Club members face daily. With this major component added to the already comprehensive services and programs we provide, we move forward confidently understanding the ever-present challenges and continually identifying solutions to empower our children so they can succeed under, unfortunately, some of the more difficult circumstances, and in some of the toughest communities in this city. Kips Bay Club members pay just $10 a year to enjoy everything we provide. With your help, Bronx youth will continue to flourish in ways they never imagined. Your support of the Show House allows us to provide engaging and enriching programs to more than 10,000 youth annually. Thank you for attending the 47th Annual Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club Show House and investing in our youth. Enjoy the Show House! Sincerely,
Daniel Quintero Executive Director

Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club’s Day for Kids event goes back more than 25 years, when it was billed as our annual street fair. It is the official launch to our fall program. Featured events in prior years included an international food tasting; “flash mob” Zumba Class, on-stage dance and music performances, arts and crafts workshops and a slam-dunk competition. There were also information tents for community based vendors and sponsors. This program provides a range of services to guide Club members as they work toward high school graduation and prepare for post-secondary education and career success. It includes fun high-yield activities, offers tips on achieving academic success and planning for post-secondary education.

House History
36-38 East 74th Street 73
36-38 East 74th Street
K
nown as one of the most iconic and rare townhouses on the Upper East Side, 36-38 East 74th Street is celebrated as a 40 foot wide mansion with a two car garage, 40 foot wide garden, approximately 14,000 sq. ft. interior, 19 rooms, 8 to 11 bedrooms, 10 fireplaces, soaring ceilings up to 17 feet, exquisite Gold Coast location one block from Central Park and impressive provenance. This 6-level single family townhouse pushes all the right buttons for a dazzling lifestyle and the ultimate in luxurious New York townhouse living.
A triumph of simplicity and classically refined ornament, the understated neo-Federal brick façade featuring four great bays with Greek fret bands and balustrades, and a delicate fanlight over the entrance, was designed for Mrs. George Whitney in 1920 by the renowned architectural firm Cross & Cross, who often worked with Rosario Candela. Originally two townhouses, in a row of 11 Italianate-style imposing brownstone residences with columnar entrance porticos, built by famed architects, D. & J. Jardine in 1870-1871, Cross & Cross combined the interiors of the two townhouses. In 1948, Dorothy Hearst Paley, a glamorous figure in New York society at the time, purchased the townhouse and engaged Swiss architect, William Lescaze, a pioneer of modernism in American architecture, to provide interior alterations and remodel the front steps. Known for her beauty and style, Ms. Paley was frequently photographed and written about during her glittering marriages to John Randolph Hearst and William S. Paley. She was immortalized by Henri Matisse in a 1936 charcoal portrait, and remembered for her social, human rights and political activism. Several of the houses on the street were designed by the era’s most prominent architects, including the large neo-Georgian house at No. 33, designed in 1901 by architect Grosvenor Atterbury, and is one of his most elegant early 20th century designs. Set in the heart of the Upper East Side, with Central Park one block away, The Met Breuer, housing some of The Metropolitan Museum’s collection of modern and contemporary art, is around the corner, with the Frick Museum close by, as are nearby Upper East Side preschools and private schools, all offering a superb lifestyle. The 40-foot-wide interior offers sublime horizontal living rather than the vertical living found in townhouses, allowing the luxury of intimate or large scale entertaining to take place all on one exquisite Parlor Floor, with its 38 x 24 foot south-facing drawing room with fireplace, 12 foot ceiling, and grand bay window overlooking the garden. The Parlor Floor also features a perfect square 21 x 21-foot dining room with fireplace and a bay window overlooking the street, which is connected to the downstairs kitchen via a butler’s pantry and back stairs, as well as the intimate bay-windowed library, which also overlooks the street. The Garden Floor of the townhouse provides for the exceptional: a two-car garage, chauffeur’s room or reception room, grand entrance gallery with glorious circular staircase, a lovely southfacing breakfast room with fireplace and door leading to the garden porch and the 40-footwide x 38 foot, approximately 1,520 sq. ft. south-facing garden. The kitchen, with stairs leading to the butler’s pantry off the upstairs dining room, is adjacent to the breakfast room and overlooks the garden. A small bar and a powder room complete the floor. The Third Floor, currently configured as four bedrooms with two baths, including the large south-facing master bedroom, each with fireplace and two with bay windows overlooking the street, and comprising approximately 2,200 sq. ft., has the luxury of offering the entire floor 74
as a master bedroom suite with many flexible floor plan options, including a master bedroom, or his and her bedrooms, with a sitting room, large dressing room and large baths. The Fourth Floor, which offers four to five bedrooms, two with fireplaces, and three bathrooms, is the perfect children’s floor with enough rooms to accommodate a family through several stages of children’s needs, including a nanny’s room, and later a playroom, or study room. The Fifth Floor is an excellent choice for the family floor, comprising three rooms and two baths, including an artist’s studio with 17-foot ceiling, north-facing skylight, and adjoining bath, or this room can be a billiards room or media room. There is a bedroom with en suite bath, which can be a gym, and the third room can be used as a family TV/game room. This floor can also be used as staff quarters, or extended family quarters. The Lower Level has a gym, laundry room, 5 storage rooms, and a mechanical room. The elevator services all 6 levels, including the lower level, with doors that open on both sides, and provides direct access to the garage. 75

"Salon de RĂŠflexion"
Inspired by the tranquil and subtly refined salons of Paris in the early 20th Century, Robert Passal and Daniel Kahan designed Salon de RĂŠflexion to combine a restrained and refined material palette with textural flourishes and subtle accents of washed pastels and natural hues. Daniel Kahan aimed to celebrate the beauty of the materials; plaster, marble, wood, and bronze allowing the room to take its cues from the mastery of Andres Arbus, Jacques Adnet, Gio Ponti and many other celebrated masters. In distilling classical details into a refined palette and tectonic assemblage, the purity and beauty of the materials are expressed. Together, Robert and Daniel selected sculptural but streamlined vintage pieces and mixed them with bespoke modern works, celebrating the breadth of this timeless style.
